General Manager’s Report
POA Maintenance Staff I would like to take an opportunity to express my appreciation for the POA maintenance staff who work long days in the hot sun or pouring down rain. These guys are hard workers and very dedicated and seldom do you hear them complain. Currently, in our Maintenance Department we have Tony Booker our Maintenance Supervisor who has worked for Rose Hill for 7 years and Daniel Back and Beau Higginbotham who are both young Maintenance Technicians learning new skills everyday. There is a lot of work to be done in a plantation this size and with only 3 people they are continually busy.

Just recently they spent 3 long, hot days removing the glue from the bocce ball courts so new turf can be installed. I would like to mention a few things they do which doesn’t include the emergencies that pop up every day and the last minute schedule changes: they put together and installed the pickle ball nets as soon as they arrived so residents could begin playing immediately, they install numerous new mailboxes and posts on both sides of the plantation, they trim tree limbs and pick up brush and trash along the roadsides, they pick up dead animals from common area and sometimes from resident’s personal property, they respond to calls from residents regarding wildlife on their property, they repair fountains and broken plumbing and
lighting fixtures, they clean ditches and weirs, they straighten up the pool decks each morning and power-wash decks, buildings and sidewalks. They try to assist residents if someone in the household is ill or is in need of help. With the amount of aging infrastructure in the Plantation there is always something that needs to be done. Perhaps the next time you see one of our maintenance people you could give them a big thumbs up and let them know they are appreciated. Wishing you a wonderful fall and cooler temperatures!!

Community Caring Neighbors By Jane Phipps Caring Neighbors continues to be very busy fulfilling our mission of helping others. We provide transportation for those who are unable to drive to doctor appointments or to go shopping, we visit those who are homebound, and we do whatever we can to assist those in need. Our recent statistics for the month of July once again show that we need more volunteers. We had 76 requests for assistance but were able to fill only 62 – that’s 81%. We would love to be able to change this percentage to 100% per month but we can’t do that with the current number of volunteers on our roster. If you’re interested in becoming a part of this charitable organization, please contact Sheryl Inglefield at 843-368-2096.

By Jane Phipps The Ladies Golf Association (18-holers) and the Rosebuds (9-holers) are looking forward to some cooler golfing weather as we enter the Autumn season. Several of the LGA members are looking forward to participating in the Coastal Carolina Ladies League which offers the opportunity to experience competitive play at various local golf courses. This season they will be attending outings at Pinecrest, Dolphin Head, The Golf Club at Indigo Run, The Crescent, Country Club of Hilton Head, Port Royal, and Rose Hill. (How exciting that we will be hosting this event in April at our beautiful new club house and improved course!) The Rosebuds play on Monday and Friday mornings while they enjoy meeting new golfers, developing friendships, and sharpening their golf skills. Recently, they were invited to participate in a golf exchange at Berkeley Hall which allowed them to play 9 holes and enjoy a nice meal afterwards. More outings are scheduled for the next few months with Invitations forthcoming. If you are interested in learning more about either of these 2 groups, call the Rose Hill Golf Club at 843-757-9030.

Meals on Wheels Meals on Wheels: Drivers that care. Good nutrition is not only important for the body but it also feeds the soul. Unfortunately, as our population continues to age there are more people that find themselves in a situation of not being able to get the nutrition they need. Food and human contact are in demand, and there’s an easy way you can help! Taking the time to help others enriches relationships, brings feelings of joy, and satisfies our sense of belonging. Several of your friends and neighbors in Rose Hill volunteer for MOW a charity that concentrates on neighborly love and good food. Meals on Wheels endeavors to help fight isolation, hunger, and loss of independence. Meals-on-Wheels, Bluffton-Hilton Head, Inc. is 501(c)(3) charitable organization that is wholly dependent on contributions from local charities and agencies, other service organizations, churches and individuals and payments from clients. We pay no national or regional dues, so all contributions go to benefit clients in this area. For many of our clients Meals on Wheels is literally the difference between remaining in their own homes and needing to relocate to a nursing facility. The nutritious meal, friendly visit and safety check help them cope with three of the biggest threats of aging: hunger, isolation and loss of independence! Research proves that when seniors get good nutrition on a regular basis they gain a greater quality of life, need fewer hospital stays, and live longer. Founded in 1980, our local chapter is an organization dedicated to providing nutritious meals for people in need on a temporary or long-term basis. We deliver noontime meals each day, Monday through Friday, including holidays, and always with a smile. Our goal is to provide adequate nutrition for the elderly, ill, injured, and disabled individuals, thus making it possible for them to live independently in their own homes. Age and income are never a factor in qualifications for a person to become a client. How does it work? Simple. Volunteers conduct a private, friendly interview to determine a prospective client’s needs and ability to pay. Clients who cannot pay the full cost of the meals pay what they can afford, if anything. With our growing population, and increased life expectancy, the need for volunteers and donations has never been higher. Rose Hill is home to several volunteer drivers and executive board members for Meals-on-Wheels, Bluffton-Hilton Head, Inc. Some of your fellow neighbors that devote their time and service to this cause as volunteer drivers are: David & Kathy Alven, Hamilton Nip Boykin, Bill & Marianne Dorson, Julie & Nick Gee, Tom Fox, Mike Hagen, Jeff Henry, Barbara Kasten, Marilyn & Ernie Miesner, Charlotte Timcoe and retired drivers Kay Bennett, Shirley Dehond and Jim Quigley. Joe Huff and Ed Varcho are not only volunteer drivers but are also on the executive board of MOW. Joe is vice – chairman and Ed is secretary. Their compassion is making a real difference in the lives of others within our entire community by delivering meals with a smiling face which ultimately warms hearts and uplifts those around them. What is it like to be a driver? Volunteer drivers typically have about a dozen homes in their route and set aside just one or two mornings a month. They use their own vehicles and bring coolers to carry the meals and keep the food warm, and the drinks cool. Drivers meet at 75 Capital Drive on Hilton Head Island around 9:30am get a roster of names for the route they will drive, then gather the meals, drinks, and desserts that are ready for them and off they go! Meals-onWheels Bluffton – Hilton Head serves anywhere from 70 -100 meals a day, Monday through Friday, to clients that cannot cook for themselves. There are 7 routes, and MOW needs 7 volunteer drivers every day. Clients can be delivered meals all 5 days, or whichever days they choose. Individuals can be on the program for a short time to meet a specific and finite need or stay on indefinitely enjoying not just meals but the companionship of adopted loved ones. While a driver can simply drive and drop off the meal, veterans agree that the greatest gift is being there for their newly minted friends with brotherly and sisterly kindness. MOW provides a needed support network to those it serves and drivers are the vanguard of this incredibly essential part of the organization’s mission. How can I help? Wondering how you can be involved? If you or someone you know needs assistance with meals on Hilton Head Island, the Bluffton area, or in Sun City, call Meals on Wheels at 843-689-8334 or fill out the easy online form on our website at www.lowmow.org . You can also become a volunteer driver or contribute to our “Adopt a Client Campaign.” You can sign up to drive by filling out the volunteer form directly on our website and you can also donate on line to help pay for meals. Anything you can do to help Meals-on-Wheels Bluffton – Hilton Head, Inc. take care of neighbors in our community that are in need will be greatly appreciated. Page 7
