PLEASE VOTE!! If you haven’t done so already, please don’t forget to vote and attend the Annual Meeting and Election on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, 6:30pm at the Rose Hill Clubhouse. Please return your ballots so we can achieve quorum!! The pools are scheduled to open on Saturday, April 6, 2019 so let’s hope the weather cooperates and starts warming up. Over the next several weeks Sweetwater Pools and the POA maintenance crew will be getting the pools ready for opening day. The spring flowers for the front entrances have been ordered by Brightview and will be installed in early April. The clubhouse has been very successful so far and we appreciate everyone’s support of the facility. It appears the menus and events have been well received by residents and visitors. We continue to add artwork as we find things that complement the furnishings and we are in the process of getting quotes for acoustical panels to help with the noise. We should be receiving a quote in the next week or so to add screening to the outside covered deck and also additional outdoor furniture.

I would like to say “Thank You” to all the board members, committee members and volunteers who work so hard to make Rose Hill a wonderful place to call home. All of the volunteers give so much of their time and we forget to acknowledge all that they do.

The LGA (18-hole golfers) and the Rosebuds (9-hole golfers) are preparing for a very busy April. On the 8th of the month, the LGA will be hosting the Coastal Carolina Ladies League. At that time, 72 women will be gathering at Rose Hill for the last event of their 2018-19 season. All of the participating clubs will anxiously be awaiting the final results to see who will display the coveted trophy in their clubhouse for the upcoming year. On April 18, the Rosebuds have organized an Exchange with golfers from Hilton Head Island and the Bluffton area. This promises to be a wonderful event with a Plaid Theme (in conjunction with the Heritage) where prizes will be given. A 50-50 raffle will be held, and all of the golfers will go home with a lovely memento of their gathering at Rose Hill. If you are interested in learning more about any of these groups, call the Pro Shop for more information at 843757-9030. Jane Phipps

Caring Neighbors held its annual Valentine dinner dance and raffle on Friday, February 8th at Oak Terrace. Some helpful security notes from your Chief of Security to help traffic and guests through the gates easier: 1. Call or email your guest pass in and have the proper spelling of the last name of your guest. 2. If you hand deliver your guests list to the gate please write them on a piece of paper or email them with your name, address, gate code and name of your guest. If you have more than ten guests, we will have passes already made with your last name on them. 3. Guest passes are for your guests and not for contractors or anyone doing work on your property. 4. If you are calling in a pass for a guest to use an amenity you MUST accompany them to that activity such as the pool, tennis or fishing. 5. If you bring your RV or boat on the property and intend to keep it on your property overnight you need a 24-hour pass from the Security Gate. You cannot keep the RV, boat or trailer on your property for more than 24-hours without a 24-hour pass. You will be ticketed for no pass. 6. Please remember that the barcode lane (right lane) has the right-of-way over the left lane at the South Gate. 7. Occasionally, the Security Officers are taking a pass over the phone or electronically and trying to waive traffic through. Please be patient if you are not waived through immediately. 8. If you are expecting a delivery, please make sure the company is aware of our gate fee policy. If you know your delivery driver will not pay the gate fee and does not have an annual commercial decal, you can pay the fee in advance at the Security Gate or at the POA Office. Please help us help you so we can have a safe community. Chief Aaron Back

There is a lot going on at TLC. Exciting times as the weather improves, with more tennis programs for all to enjoy. The Stroke of the Week on a Monday features a different stroke each week to focus on. Often the class is small which allows the student to get that special attention at a clinic price! On Tuesdays we have a Theme of the Week which features a certain doubles tactic to focus on; and our ball machine clinic on Thursday evening gives players the opportunity to groove their strokes without worrying about playing points. A variety of skills from baseline ground strokes to transitioning to the net game are all worked on during the 1 hr class. We love our 10 and under tennis program here at Tennisclub of the Low Country. Our program caters to ages 4-10 and is continuing to see tremendous growth. Our Mini Shots program is designed to introduce 4 and 5-year olds to the game of tennis in a fun and exciting setting. We also have a Red Ball program that focuses on further developing the tennis skills of those ages 6 to 10. Our programs run Monday-Thursday afternoons children can start at any time. If you are interested in getting your kids involved in a fun sport that they can play the rest of their lives, now is the time! Come see us at TLC and we will take good care of you. We have started a wonderful Family Fun afternoon where our junior players of all levels, play with their parent or an adult and enjoy some match play fun. Our first afternoon was in February where we had 33 teams participating and it was great fun, ending up with pizza and cake! The next one is scheduled for March 30th so call the club to reserve your spot. The club has a very active adult program and many teams are competing in the USTA leagues. It is a busy spring, and we are enjoying being on the courts dodging the raindrops!! We are starting to register players for our Independent League which starts in April – let us know if you would like to join the fun. Keeping the best news until last!!! March Madness Membership Special from March 17th – April 17th TLC is offering a special of $1 initiation fee if dues are paid in full for the year AND one month free. Just a little craziness for a month!!! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!! Watch the website and the weekly emails for more information. Weekly adult clinics, social play and special events for all levels are available for TLC members and non-members to join in the fun. Private lessons with one of our seasoned certified tennis professionals may be scheduled at your convenience. Information is available on our website www.tlcrosehill.com or by contacting the Club at 843-271-6401 to sign-up.

Introducing The Wing Nuts, Rose Hill’s Newest Interest Group!! This past Autumn we put out an all-call asking for willing neighbors to help with the annual National Audubonsponsored Christmas Bird Count. Quite a few folks offered to count from the comfort of their homes (always an option). We were only a handful actually braving the chilly morning temperature that midDecember day, but what we lacked in foot power we more than made up for in enthusiasm. Not only did we sight a large variety of species, but we made a couple of uncommon sightings, too - such as the Red Headed Woodpecker in a wooded area near the Rose Hill Mansion.... and, later in the day, a flock of Roseate Spoonbills at Hidden Lake. But the BEST thing we found that day was a group of new friends! We got together to welcome the New Year with a Birders Brunch at Bob and Sue’s -- a wonderful opportunity to get to know one another even better (and out of the cold!). From that sprung emailed conversations about bird sightings and sometimes shared photos. And from THAT has evolved the idea of our birders group being an actual presence in Rose Hill, for all who wish to participate in and enjoy.. We initiated a contest to find a name for our newly formed group of birding enthusiasts. The hands-down winner was The Wing Nuts - suggested by Ginny Rice. Most days we can find several shared emails in our Inboxes - perhaps telling us where we can find an Osprey on his nest (thanks, Jennifer!) or sharing awesome photos (such as Kevin’s Osprey eating his just-caught fish dinner!) or Carol’s beautiful Painted Buntings bathing in her birdbath… or Sue & Bob’s brilliant Baltimore Oriole visitors.

Uniq’uleles…...Unique-uleles…..Uni kuleles……… However you spell it, it’s a great group to be a part of, if you’re looking for FUN… and mental stimulation, too!! Did you know that the little uke is so “hot” these days that music stores across the country are having trouble keeping them on their shelves?? It’s true! Did you know that in many schools, here and around the world, the uke has replaced the recorder as the instrument to which young children are first introduced in their early grade music classes? Did you ever imagine the fun you might have, sitting with neighbors, young and old(er!), strumming chords and singing along? With just a few chords we can sing and play all sorts of music, from simple kiddie tunes and Americana to Spirituals to tunes from our parents’ day, to Peter, Paul & Mary, John Denver and Johnny Cash to Rock & Roll to Patriotic anthems to……. See? There’s no stopping us! After learning just three chords you can play hundreds of songs. Really!! Add a few more and the sky’s the limit!! We have one or two “ringers” amongst us [Bud has been playing since his Navy days; myself, since getting hooked on it during a Hawaiian cruise 6 years ago]; the rest are newbies, but they will tell you how they started playing music from the very first day!

We are working on setting up a website so that all residents will have easy access to our comments and our photos. One needn’t be a birding expert to participate. “Lurkers” are most welcome, too! Once it’s established, the contact information will be made available to all.

We meet most Tuesday afternoons from 3:00 until 4:30 or so, at our home... but that’s subject to change at any time, so please call first to be sure of the when and where. Everyone is welcome!!! We’re happy to get you started on something that may well prove to be a new lifelong hobby!

The Lowcountry is a magnificent place, as we all know… and Rose Hill, in particular. How fortunate for each of us that we chose to make this our home, where not only the neighbors are friendly and caring but the wildlife all around us is so beautiful and accessible!! All we need do is open our eyes and behold!!

Besides, it’s good for your health. You know it’s said that laughter is the best medicine. Well, we guarantee an abundance of laughter if you join us in The Uniq’uleles!!

The Double Rainbow Submitted by Elizabeth A. Breeze of 7 River Birch Shortly after the World Trade Center tragedy of September 11, 2001, the much-loved American poetess, Maya Angelou, spoke to a large crowd in New York City's Lincoln Center. One thing she said was this: "If it looks like the sun isn't going to shine, look for the rainbow. If it looks like the sun is really not going to shine, be the rainbow". Just a few simple words, but what a powerful message they send to all of us. I don't know about you, but my spirits lift each time I see a rainbow appear in the sky, following a storm. When the rain abates and blue sky peeps through the clouds, my heart beats faster as I anticipate this miraculous gift of color. I feel like a child at Christmas, almost holding my breath until that special moment when I can open my eyes and receive a longed-for gift. I am never disappointed; each rainbow in my life has been special in its own way and I will never see one without feeling a surge of joy. Many years ago, biking and driving through the Suffolk countryside, I remarked on the different ways of baling and stacking grain at harvest time. It had been a glorious Summer, as I remember, so farmers were able to sell more grain for human consumption, rather than animal feed. Great rectangular and square bales of corn and wheat were stacked in fields, waiting to be hauled away to market or stored in barns for use around the farm. My favorites were the huge rolled bales shining golden in the sun, neatly placed in rows, one behind the other, looking as if they might suddenly roll away and crash into each other like giant toys in the nursery. It was over a field such as this that I saw my first double rainbow. I could hardly believe my eyes! One rainbow arching above another! How was this possible? I longed to park the car and simply stare at this wonderful sight, but alas! the country road on which I was traveling was far too narrow for that. So I drove on slowly, grateful for this unexpected gift from Mother Nature. Over the years, I have seen two more double rainbows after heavy storms, both filling me with the same sense of wonder. Although I am certain there must be a scientific explanation for this phenomenon, I choose not to find out about it as I don't want to spoil the pleasure these rainbows have given me. You might ask what my ramblings about double rainbows have to do with Angelou's words to a New York City audience. I believe she wants us to bring light and joy into the world around us and to share it with others, enriching peoples' lives in a meaningful, positive way. I've been blessed in my life to have met people who have lifted my spirits simply by walking into a room. There's an air of optimism about them, perhaps a glowing smile, a warm handshake and a complete lack of negative conversation. Often, they are strangers, taking time to listen, rather than talk about themselves. My contact with them may last only minutes, like a butterfly alighting briefly on a flower, yet the memory stays with me forever. On occasion, such meetings serve to highlight my own inadequacies and I fall short of what an old American telephone ad used to say, "Reach out and touch someone." Easier said than done, for many of us. Recently, I spent an afternoon making chutney with a dear friend whose granddaughter was visiting. The child was¡ about eight years old, I believe, chatty and friendly, asking about my life as if we were old friends. She had painted several pictures and as I was leaving, Ellie handed me a goodbye gift, a painting of a rainbow. The paint was so thick, it took several days to dry but as I drove home on that lovely afternoon, it occurred to me that the true rainbow was a child's gift of reaching out in friendship, asking nothing in return. I woke up this morning, listening to heavy rain pounding the pavement outside my window and as I went downstairs, I thought my heart would stop beating when I pulled open the curtains. The brightest rainbow I had ever seen shone in the sky, though most of it was hidden behind thick gray clouds. The colors were vivid; how apt that it appeared this weekend, given the subject matter of this article. I felt a glow of happiness welling up inside, then could it be? The faintest hint of another rainbow, barely visible, could just be seen above the bright one. Within five minutes, the sky was clear and the rainbows had disappeared. This incident seemed to be a sign of some sort; a reminder to seize the moment and try harder to bring a little happiness into the lives of others. So I shall take the advice of stickers that graced the bumpers of American cars in the 80's, "never resist the temptation to paint a rainbow and DON’T POSTPONE JOY!" If you would like to submit an article or creative writing piece to be considered for the PV please email crystal@rosehillpoa.com
