The February Board Meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, February 5, 2019, 6:30pm at Colleton Point.
Reservations continue to come in for the Caring Neighbor’s Valentine Gala to be held at Oak Terrace on February 8 with music provided by DJ Billy Ball. This is our only fundraiser of the year making it an important event that we heavily rely on to meet our annual expenses. The success of this evening is one of the ways that we can continue to provide free assistance to our neighbors in need. Just a reminder that seating is limited to 80 people so if you haven’t reserved your seat, please do so by Monday, February 4th. In addition to a great meal and dancing, we will also be selling tickets for 5 great Raffle items (cash & checks accepted). If you are not able to attend this event but wish to support a very worthy cause, donations may be made to CNI in care of Sheryl Inglefield at 39 Fairway Drive, Bluffton, SC, 29910. Also, if you don’t have access to a printer, you can pick up a hard copy of our flyer at the POA office, then simply follow the directions at the bottom of the page to make your reservations.

For the last dozen or so years a group of us has gone out through and along the waterways and wilds of Rose Hill from Colleton Point to Bill Baker Park, on foot and even in kayaks. We have diligently collected data for the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count, the largest citizen science project known. The morning of our most recent count we spotted the elusive and pretty rare Red Headed wood pecker … and have pictures to prove it!! Last week folks spotted the beautiful Roseate Spoonbill, actually 4 of them, “vacationing” here in Rose Hill. We are forming a bird group - not necessarily experts, by any means - just ‘ordinary folks’ who enjoy going about the outdoors with a bird book in one hand and binoculars and/or camera in the other. Our goal is to provide a central resource to report sightings of unusual birds for others to enjoy, to meet and share photos and stories , and to enjoy an occasional bird outing together … and perhaps some non-birding get-togethers, as well! If you’d like to be on our mailing list for this birding group, please contact Bob Wiener at bobwiener10@gmail.com or at 843-684-2461.
We celebrated the inaugural gathering of the Rose Hill Ukulele Players Beginners Class on January 29th, 2019. Our original little band of ukulele-totin’ strummers, The Uniq’uleles, who began playing together in 2012, will reunite once folks straggle home from their various vacations. We’ll incorporate the Beginners into the group right away, as we know they won’t stay beginners very long! This first day we were a quintet comprised, alphabetically, of Bill, Bob, Ginny, Sosie and our leader Sue. We hope to see even more of our neighbors in the weeks to come. It’s an easy instrument to learn [Hey! Notice the middle syllable: in-STRUM-ent!!] and we can all help one another. We practiced 7 songs, all in the key of C and basically using only three chords, namely C, G7 and F. You do NOT have to read musical notation; you merely learn the fingering and you’re set to go! And with these three chords under your belt, there are literally HUNDREDS of songs waiting to be played!!! For those of you who missed today’s get-together the songs we practiced are: I Walk the Line, Blowin’ in the Wind, Jambalaya, The MTA Song, Kumbaya, Dixie, and my personal favorite, the foot-tappin’ fun-lovin’ Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy. We look forward to our group of ‘Ukers’ growing. This is definitely an example of “the more, the merrier”! When you’re holding a ukulele you can’t help but forget your troubles and grin! Once we’re a bit more skilled and confident (not too long down the road), we hope to volunteer to provide fun singing and uking at our local nursing homes and senior facilities. If you know anyone who may be interested in learning to play, please have them contact Sue (suebobw@gmail.com). Our next practice will be Tuesday, February 5th, 3 - 4:30 pm, at our home: 70 White Oaks Circle. Please call to confirm that you’ll be coming. We may be moving the day from Tuesdays to Mondays to accommodate different schedules, so stay tuned! As we said above, “The more, the merrier!” - Bob Wiener (bobwiener10@gmail.com)
