The Office of Student Affairs

Page 1

Introduction

Rose-Hulman’s reputation as one of the top science, engineering, and mathematics institutions in the country is often mentioned as the primary reason students choose to attend. The pleasant surprise they receive upon arrival is finding that same quality of experience beyond the classroom. Both Dr. Rick Stamper (Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs) and Erik Hayes (Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students) served as resident assistants for the Office of Student Affairs when they attended Rose-Hulman as undergraduates. As leaders of the Academic Affairs and Student Affairs departments, their partnership and collaboration help ensure that students are successful in all aspects of Rose-Hulman.

Student Affairs encompasses several different offices that contribute to this experience. These offices support our students by providing avenues for them to engage with their peers, take a break from their studies, focus on their health and wellness, or a multitude of other activities and opportunities. These start the first day our students arrive on campus and experience a jam-packed Orientation week and continue through the partnership with the Office of Career Services as they secure employment before walking across the Commencement stage just a few short years later. Student Affairs takes great pride in providing the right amount of support to every student, to help ensure they find success on our campus. Whether it is playing a few games of intramural volleyball, enjoying one of our many student-led drama productions, or spending some time with our staff during one of our Student Counseling Center programs, students quickly learn that Student Affairs is committed to their all-around success as a member of our community.

“ The strength of Rose-Hulman flows from the clarity of our mission. We are here to serve our students. The relationship and cooperation between the Student Affairs and the Academic Affairs organizations is a nice example of that.”

Rick Stamper (’85)

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

“ It is no secret that Rose-Hulman provides our students with an outstanding technical education. Our Student Affairs team works tirelessly to create that same exceptional experience outside of the classroom by embracing the ‘individual attention and support’ promised in the Institute’s mission statement.”

Erik Hayes (’97, ‘01)

Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students

Student Accessibility Services

ACCOMMODATIONS

Student Accessibility Services facilitates reasonable accommodations for students. The office is in the Student Affairs office in the Mussallem Union.

The most common accommodation we offer is 50% extended time on timed testing. Other more specific reasonable accommodations may be based on functional limitations and specialist recommendations that are reasonable in the context and setting.

ACCESSIBLE PRE-ORIENTATION

Each year, we welcome new students who have processed accommodations, and their families, to a luncheon and presentation one day prior to move-in and orientation.

GREEK LIFE

Greek Life at Rose-Hulman offers an opportunity for students to build relationships with their peers, experience leadership development, serve the local and campus communities, and meet alumni to form professional connections. Greek organizations are run by student leaders with guidance from faculty advisors and the Office of Student Affairs.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS OUR GREEK ORGANIZATIONS DO:

• Rush and Recruitment

– During the fall quarter, the fraternities spend six weeks going through Rush. This includes “Dorm Storming”, the Greek Fair, chapter specific events, and formal meetings. Rush ends with Bid Tuesday, where prospective members stop by the Union early in the morning to sign bids with their fraternity of choice. In 2023, 141 students joined a fraternity on Bid Tuesday, and there are a total of 427 fraternity members.

– Through the end of fall and beginning of winter quarter, sorority recruitment is in full swing. During the 2023 winter recruitment season, 46 new members joined a sorority (34 received their top choice). There are 156 total sorority members— one-third of the student body is currently involved with Greek Life.

• Fall Day of Service

– The sororities and fraternities take on service projects across campus as part of our Fall Day of Service. The Greek organizations always take on projects of their own, but they also end the day by helping unload wood pallets so the Bonfire Committee can start laying the foundation for the Homecoming Bonfire.

• Bikes for Tykes

– Members of our Greek organizations come together once a year to assemble, inspect, and sort bicycles to donate to Terre Haute Chances and Services for Youth. They spend the morning assembling bikes for children in the Terre Haute area, and in 2023 every single chapter sent students to help!

• Greek Games

– The Greek Games offer a chance for our sororities and fraternities to compete against each other in friendly competitions. The most recent year included a relay race, eating competition, minute to win it, human pyramid contest, and much more. ATO took home the trophy in 2024, and we hope to use the momentum of the event to continue Greek Games for years to come.

Health Services

Health Services is located inside the lower level of the Mussallem Union. We offer a variety of health and wellness services.

Your visit to the clinic can last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour based on the number of patients being seen and the acuity of your illness. If you require medications, an injection or procedure, your visit will take additional time.

Students require a student ID and insurance card for registration.

RESIDENCE LIFE

The Residence Life staff works through the year to provide the best on-campus experience possible for our students. Cory Pardieck is the Director of Residence Life, LeAnne Myers is the Associate Director, and Kyle Washburn is the Assistant Director. Check out some of the work we do!

• Resident Assistants, Sophomore Advisors, and Graduate Assistants

– Our student staff members (Resident Assistants, Sophomore Advisors, and Graduate Assistants) are the cornerstone of our campus culture. They form personal relationships with every person on their floor, build community in their halls, and provide support and guidance for their residents. Cory works with the SAs, LeAnne works with the GAs, and Kyle works with the RAs.

– The RA staff takes a staff trip each year during winter quarter break. This year, the RA staff went to Nashville!

• Housing — A new residence hall for first-year students is under construction and set to open in fall 2025. We currently have 6 freshman halls, 1 sophomore hall, and 3 upperclass halls. Scharpenberg Hall offers gender-inclusive housing for freshmen, and all upperclass halls are gender inclusive.

• Greatest Floor — an annual 24-hour event that consists of 24 events. Greatest Floor attracted over 740 students this year (over 60%!). Challenges range from video games, rap battles, craft building, cooking competitions, memory challenges, Rube Goldberg machines, stage performances, and much more. Our alumni team took its first-ever victory!

• Hallympics — a week-long competition between residence halls on campus. The winning floor receives the coveted Yard-of-Beef. Hallympics takes place during Week 1 of Fall quarter. Halls are awarded points on score, participation, and spirit.

• Bonfire — working alongside the Bonfire Committee, students work together to build the homecoming bonfire. Each residence hall takes a turn building and “guarding” the bonfire from upperclassmen, and large groups of students stay at the bonfire field from 8 p.m. – 8 a.m. around a campfire, and the RAs and SAs are tasked with making it as fun as possible!
