ACMF: The rise and rise of chicken meat Chicken further cemented its position as Australian consumers’ favourite meat during the past year, with per capita consumption climbing more than 46kg pa for the first time and growth in production outstripping predictions for the second year in a row. This was no doubt in part due to chicken’s attractive pricing compared to its competitors, with the heavy marketing of the $8 bbq chicken at major supermarkets contributing to this. In this respect, it is interesting to note that growth in the number of chickens processed over 2015/16 (at 5.4%) exceeded growth in tonnage of chicken meat produced (3%). Can chicken continue to move ahead of its competitor proteins? Chicken’s competitive pricing position compared to the other meat categories is likely to be maintained over the coming year. The difference between chicken and beef prices is now significant, and while global beef prices are coming down somewhat, it is unlikely Australian beef prices will fully mirror that trend. Beef prices locally are expected to remain stable or at most drop marginally over the year. Lamb prices will probably remain fairly firm, as supply is likely to be down this coming year. However, the pricing strategies adopted by the major supermarket chains with respect to red meats, will inevitably impact these trends and therefore potentially chicken’s share of consumer spend in the meat category; their mid-2016 foray into lamb leg roast discounting demonstrating that meat generally could potentially become the new fresh food battle ground. Countering this, however, grain prices are forecast to be favourable this coming year, which primarily benefits the intensive chicken and pork industries over the red meat sectors. In summary, chicken meat should continue to hold its current dominance in the meat category and growth in production in the order of 3 – 4% to meet forecast growth in domestic demand for the year ahead. Some things change, some remain the same – the challenges ahead Over the past 24 months, we have watched (thankfully ourselves unscathed) while much of the rest of the

poultry meat producing world has been rocked by massive and unprecedented outbreaks of avian influenza (AI). From late 2014 to mid-2015 the USA egg and turkey industries suffered major outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza strains H5N8 and H5N2, with farms in 15 states affected, resulting in the death or culling of almost 50 million poultry at an estimated cost of $3.3 billion. Elsewhere, AI strain H5N6 has wreaked havoc in South Korea, where over 22.5 million birds, mostly laying hens, have been culled since 18 November 2016. World animal health and human health authorities are also monitoring the spread of H5N8 over an extended area of Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The evolving H5N8 highly pathogenic AI situation worldwide is considered to present a significant threat for poultry and wild birds globally. To illustrate the reach of this particular virus, at the time of writing, the following countries had reported detections in poultry and/or wild bird populations during 2016 to current: Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Kuwait, India, Iran, Israel, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Nigeria, People’s Republic of China, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, Macedonia, the UK, Uganda and Ukraine. While, thankfully, so far no human cases of this particular strain of virus have been reported, back over in China, AI strain H7N9, a virus carried by but not associated with disease in poultry, has (of January 16, 2017) been responsible for the deaths of at least 359 people, from a total of 918 laboratory-confirmed cases of human infection reported to the World Health Organisation. Another zoonotic strain, H9N2, is now considered endemic in Chinese poultry, and is being closely monitored by global health authorities. Can the Australian chicken industry remain untouched by the impacts of AI? The broader poultry industry in Australia has had its share of AI outbreaks in the past, so Australia is clearly not immune. Luckily in all these past outbreaks the viruses involved were ‘local’ strains of AI virus, genetically distinct from the

Vivien Kite, Executive Director, Australian Chicken Meat Federation Inc

AI viruses seen elsewhere in the world and not known to be zoonotic. However, developments elsewhere in the world, especially those related to the spread of H7N9, are resulting in the world’s health authorities becoming rather more cautious in the assertions they are prepared to make regarding the potential risks to humans of outbreak viruses. Therefore, any AI outbreak here in Australia would present greater communications challenges for the industry than perhaps ever previously, quite apart from the challenges of eradicating any outbreak. Biosecurity and preparedness across the entire poultry industry will be vital to protect our industry from the potential consequences and impacts, both in terms of poultry production and productivity and the ongoing support of our local consumers, of an outbreak of AI. Pressure from outside the industry for changes in farming practices based on unrealistic expectations and ungrounded perceptions of welfare benefit is not new to the chicken industry. However, the coming year will present particular challenges for the industry in maintaining sensible, viable and meaningful animal welfare standards and husbandry practices as the proposed new national regulatory poultry welfare standards and guidelines are debated. The ACMF has been very active over the past year in the processes of standards development and consultation, but the real work is yet to come, as the standards are put out for public consultation – certain to attract the attention of those in the community CONTINUED ON PAGE 6 w

Poultry CRC winds up: Australian Poultry Hub steps in The Poultry Cooperative Research (CRC) was set up at The University of New England (UNE) in 2003: a joint venture established and supported under the Australian Federal Government’s Research Centres Program. The excellent work undertaken by the first Poultry CRC resulted in the government granting a second seven year term. In July 2008 the Poultry CRC won the World’s Poultry Science Association (WPSA) Industry Award which was presented at the World’s Poultry Congress held in Brisbane in that year. The CRC won the same award in 2012 which was presented at the World’s Poultry Congress held in Salvador, Brazil. Speaking at The Australian Egg Corporation Forum (AECL) held at Torquay Vic in November 2016, Professor Minghan Choct, CEO of the Poultry CRC, in his address ‘Achievements and transition’, outlined a truly amazing list of not just purely scientific outcomes, but the fact that the Poultry CRC contributed to education, global poultry health and helped numbers of young scientists gain significant career opportunities both in Australia and overseas. “The Poultry CRC generated a critical mass attracting industry investments with 42 key participants representing 95% of Australia’s poultry industry and key R,D&E capabilities relevant to our programs,” he said. “We attracted significant international participation that augments our overall research and commercial capability: our total budget was $187 million over the 14 year life of the two CRCs. “There were 176 research projects delivering outputs ranging from direct application on farm – euthanasia, composting, vaccines, egg quality, to ‘blue sky’ work, sex determination in layer chicks, welfare methodology, albumin quality and more. “The work of the CRC built capacity and expertise in education as well as research and through our facilities benefited the industry as a whole.” As an example of the successful commercial facets of the CRC Professor Choct referred to a novel fowl cholera vaccine now available internationally and vaccines for ILT and necrotic enteritis currently in development.

“We have established 57 patents and many of these have been licensed to established manufacturers,” he said. “As a country representing less than 1% of the global poultry industry, such a large number of patents signifies the outstanding research breakthroughs where Australia leads the world.” On the subject of impacts for the future, Professor Choct stated that, “the essential areas of capacity building instigated by the CRC are instrumental for the industry’s sustainability. One example is the Asia-Pacific Centre for Animal Health established at the University of Melbourne. This centre delivers 30 rapid diagnostic tests from the one location, reducing diagnosis time for both farmers and industry from days to hours. “This testing procedure can be maintained and run using the skills and facilities present at the University of Melbourne, a university with long term commitments to the poultry industry,” he said. “We have established a knowledge base for the industry which includes VET training for Certificate III and IV competence levels, delivered teachers’ resource kits to 900 schools and generated nine videos for raising poultry in schools. “There have been more than 2.5 million views on YouTube of our Chicken Embryo Development animation and the Poultryhub.org website attracts a global response with more than 80,000 hits a month. The Poultry CRC has developed the next generation of industry leaders; 77 post graduates with 22 already placed in the industry, 18 in academia and a further 30 completing their research. “The Poultry CRC has created in its 14 year timespan, a unique collaborative network. “No single institute in Australia has the full complement of expertise and facilities to deal with the increasing complexity of problems hindering future productivity gain. “This network is crucial for addressing the unique challenges faced by Australia’s poultry industries. “Communication must be regarded as an integral part of farming in the future, and events like ‘Ideas Exchange’ are important for two-way communication between researchers and industry,” Professor Choct said.

Mingan Choct, CEO of Poultry CRC

“Will this collaborative work go on by itself?” was the obvious question posed. The answer of course, is that it will, as the CRC transitions to Poultry Hub Australia (PHA). Professor Choct explained that, “PHA will be set up under the umbrella of UNE as a semi-autonomous entity with its own branding, financial, personnel and contracting powers. “A Director and Industry Committee will decide on priorities for funding,” he said. Poultry CRC Research Manager Dr Pat Blackall was quoted by Professor Choct when he commented that, “we have a formula in which the relationship will work so that the best bits of the CRC are retained for the overall benefit of the industry”. “The proposed structure of PHA does not need a board as it will work under UNE governance framework. There is no need to sign up research providers and it will fund any area of research prioritised by the Industry Committee. “UNE’s role will be to offer an effective low-cost overarching structure for the long term operation of the centre. “It will pay for salaries and on-costs for the Director and an administrative assistant as well as covering expenses of offices, insurances, financial management, IT structures and other operating costs of PHA. UNE can use the extensive collaborative network for poultry science and education created by the Poultry CRC to continue attracting research projects and post graduate students. “The Industry Committee’s role will be to identify urgent industry issues CONTINUED ON PAGE 6 w

5

v CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 and to evaluate research proposals for funding. “An executive committee will consist of a UNE representative, the Industry Committee chair and an independent industry representative. They will oversee the operation of PHA and provide high-level advice to the Director, Professor Choct explained. “Members will contribute cash and may be part of the Industry Committee and entitled to host interns, attend the Ideas Exchange and participate in onsite trials. “As to areas of research, these could be any issues identified by the Industry Committee as a priority. For projects to succeed, they will need at least two partners that offer complimentary expertise and facilities. “In reference to an educational function for PHA, it will award the Jeff Fairbrother Annual Honours Scholarship, run an annual Poultry Grad workshop and nurture promising students and cultivate internship opportunities for industry. “PHA will work closely with industry partners to rapidly prioritise and approve funding for highly collaborative projects that tackle key industry issues and identify research outcomes that require widespread industry extension to ensure effective adoption. “It will assist promising students to find appropriate industry mentors. “In the future the PHA can make the best parts of the CRC available on a long term sustainable basis to the poultry industry for frontier science and state of the art innovations, assist future leaders and the industry workforce. PHA will be an industry critical national network with a global leverage,” Prof Choct concluded. Poultry Digest was optimistic about the establishment on the Poultry CRC back in 2003 and that enthusiasm was well founded as under the guidance of Professor Mingan Choct and the first Chairman, the late Dr Jeff Fairbrother

and the current Chairman, the Hon. Dr John Kerin (one of Australia’s best agriculture ministers in Australia’s history). The CRC MkI certainly delivered which is probably why Poultry CRC MkII was granted by the federal government. We, at Poultry Digest, were still in the early stages of coming to grips with the complexities of the Australasian poultry sector in 2003 and the Ideas Exchange events and numerous visits to UNE helped us to get a better grasp of an industry that would, in the two CRC terms, become the leading protein source for Australians. We not only learnt a lot but made friends along the way. We regard the Ideas Exchange as an institute on its own right because it is a forum that focuses on giving industry the layman’s version of complex science, while researchers obtain a good understanding of what industry actually needs. This combination is a winning formula. The dedication of all levels within the CRC has produced phenomenal results, not only in terms of usable research but, for example, world leading vaccines for the poultry industry. To have lost the critical mass that the two CRCs generated would have

been tragic. PHA will be an asset, not only to the poultry industry, but the Australian agriculture sector in general and probably beyond Oceania. We look forward to many more stories generated by the intellectual capacity and infrastructure that will come from the UNE based Poultry Hub Australia. On February 1, 2017 on the Poultry Hub website, it was announced that there was a new Director of PHA appointed. “Dr Tamsyn Crowley, Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology and Therapeutics at Deakin University, is the new Director of Poultry Hub Australia. Tamsyn, who has an extensive background in poultry research, has been involved in a number of Poultry CRC projects in her previous role at CSIRO and in her current position, most recently miRNAs, a novel target for improving broiler chicken health and production. “Tamsyn will take up her appointment as an Associate Professor at UNE, charged with getting Poultry Hub Australia (PHA) up and running. As Dr Kylie Hewson, External Program Manager – Chicken Meat at RIRDC, and Assistant Executive Director at APIA and ACMF, said “Tamsyn is a great choice for inaugural Director, she’s a solid poultry researcher and a great communicator. “She can oversee the research and educational projects of Poultry Hub Australia, while also having the relationship management skills to make it a successful poultry centre for our industry.” “Yes, I’m incredibly pleased,” said Professor Choct, “it is pretty tough getting a transition body up for any CRC, let alone one in the agricultural sector. Tamsyn is a leader. “Her natural way with people, and her native intelligence, will ensure a great start for PHA. I’m very confident to pass the Poultry CRC’s legacy into Tamsyn’s safe hands,” the statement concluded.

v CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 opposed to the principle or practices used in producing chicken meat for human consumption. The industry has some work to do over the coming year to explain its position and enunciate its policies with respect to the use of antibiotics, with pressure likely to mount for products that can be marketed as ‘antibiotic free’ or ‘reared without antibiotics’. The Australia chicken industry actually has a great story to tell in this respect, having never had access to many of the antibiotics classified by the World Health Organisation as ‘critically important in human medicine’,

a situation that sets it apart from the majority of the poultry producing world, and almost ten years ago having committed to a policy to not using antibiotics for growth promotion purposes. However responsible use of antibiotics does not mean no use. While recognising that antimicrobials such as antibiotics continue to be an important tool for ensuring the health and welfare of Australia’s meat chicken flocks, the coming year will see the chicken industry’s commitment to responsible antibiotic use ramped up even further, as all major players roll out sophisticated antimicrobial stewardship

programs across their operations. With the structure of ownership of the industry changing, the drive for returns from processors may see further changes emerge in the focus of companies and the way that they operate. I am confident that any changes will not impact on the industry’s capacity to prepare for and respond to key threats and challenges. This is a resilient industry, well equipped to respond to the many challenges that will be thrown its way and to capitalise on the opportunities that the prevailing market conditions are likely to provide during 2017.

AECL: New CEO outlines priorities for 2017 Poultry Digest interviewed the new CEO of The Australian Egg Corporation Ltd (AECL) Rowan McMonnies to get a sense of the new direction for the egg industry services body. Mr McMonnies took the opportunity to formally introduce himself to the industry at the AECL Forum in late November where he outlined some key themes for AECL of engagement and focus. “I see it as a common sense approach. Work with stakeholders to identify priorities, do what you say and be transparent in what you do and don’t undermine real outcomes by trying to do too much” Mr McMonnies said. “It sounds easy but getting the process to work begins and ends with stakeholder engagement. “If egg farmers can see their perspectives reflected in the work program of their RDC then they will continue to engage and make sure we stay on track. “We are going to put a lot more energy into this next year to lay the foundations for maximising benefits to the industry” Mr McMonnies said. Poultry Digest asked Mr McMonnies about specific plans for 2017 and he stated that the first priority was to release a new strategic plan for the organisation. “We’ve taken a different approach with the strategic plan and tried to make it the most simple and clear expression

of our priorities as possible. “It’s a bold ambition but I’m hoping egg farmers might actually read it and use it as a springboard to engage on the development of specific programs. Internally, I’d like it to go on the wall as a guide to our decisions rather than be buried in a drawer for five years. “The strategic plan is the output from an extensive consultation with stakeholders as to their priorities. “Top of list was the importance of the marketing program in growing egg consumption. We’re in a good position as we have campaigns that have produced results in the past and are ready to go again. “The issue is deciding when to press the button for maximum effect and we will be watching market statistics carefully to get this right,” he said. “The strategic plan also covers the way AECL operates. This is not a traditional area of interest for egg farmers but I see it as critical and worthy of attention. We are playing with other people’s money which is a big responsibility. “If we’re not on our game, small mistakes can have a big impact on the value created so I want make sure we have the resources to ensure things are going to plan.” Poultry Digest also asked Mr McMonnies whether the egg industry would be able to overcome the challenges of increasing regulatory and

Rowan McMonnies, CEO of AECL. market change. “I really think so. There’s a lot of noise in the market including serious issues that the industry needs to engage with but it’s not the main game. “Egg farmers have always been focused on their customers and will continue to respond to changing customer preferences. In the end, it’s the quality of the product that will secure the future of the industry. “Delicious, nutritious, versatile, affordable protein will always find its way to Australian dining tables. “It’s a great industry to be a part of and I look forward to contributing to its success over the next few years,” Mr McMonnies concluded.
