Chicken meat to stay on top....and in the spotlight

he Australian Chicken Meat Federation Inc. (ACMF) is the peak coordinating body for participants in the chicken meat industry in Australia. It represents all elements of the industry, including meat chicken farmers and processors, nationally, and is recognised as the industry representative body by the Australian Government. Chicken meat beats all predictions Australians love their chicken! According to recently released statistics (ABARES “Agricultural commodity statistics 2017”, December 2017), the popularity of chicken meat with Australian consumers exceeded all expectations in 2015-16, with apparent per capita consumption reaching 48.5 kg that year, some four years earlier than had been predicted just nine months previously (ABARES “Agricultural commodities, March Quarter 2017”). Consumption of chicken now far exceeds that of the red meats combined, due in part to its highly competitive pricing vis-à-vis beef and lamb in particular, and in 2015-16 exceeded its next nearest competitor (pork) by more than 20 kg. While publicly available statistics on consumption are always at least 18 months behind, chicken meat production statistics suggest there was further growth in production and consumption over 2016-17 and subsequently, although there has been some evidence to suggest a slowing in the rate of growth of the industry more recently. In summary, continued growth in chicken meat production is expected over the coming year – although perhaps more modestly than over recent past years – and chicken meat will retain, if not increase, its current dominance in the meat category. Animal welfare in the spotlight in 2018 The animal welfare practices of the industry will be put under the microscope in 2018. In particular, public consultation on the proposed new poultry welfare standards and guidelines will attract increased community and media

attention to the issue of poultry welfare and scrutiny of practices in the industry. At this time of heightened public awareness, opponents of the industry or its practices will no doubt be seeking to find and exploit any opportunity to keep the focus there as new laws on poultry welfare are developed and implemented across Australia over the year. The industry can therefore expect any animal welfare incidents or breaches of acceptable welfare practice to be picked up by the media and generalised to the entire industry. The ACMF will have significant work to do over the coming year, both in terms of communicating the industry’s position and commitment on key welfare issues and the implications of changes in animal welfare legislation for both the industry and consumers of chicken meat, but also in defending the industry more broadly against unjustified accusations of failures to protect the welfare of the Australia meat chickens. Industry initiatives in responsible use of antimicrobials to bear fruit The significant achievements of the Australian chicken meat industry in responsibly managing its use of antibiotics have started to be recognised more broadly, particularly as awareness has grown of the industry’s initiatives in the areas of implementation of antimicrobial stewardship programs, removal of growth promotion uses in chickens of antibiotics also used in human medicine, and antimicrobial resistance monitoring. Nevertheless, challenges still exist in effectively getting these positive messages through to the general public, so don’t expect that the pressure from the industry’s customers for products that can be marketed as “antibiotic free” or “reared without antibiotics” will necessarily abate in the short term. The ACMF’s position will continue to be that antimicrobials such as antibiotics are an important tool for ensuring the health and welfare of Australia’s meat chicken flocks. However, effective antibiotics are a precious resource that the industry has a role to play in protecting for future generations. They must therefore be used judiciously, and only in a way that both

delivers significant health and welfare benefits for chickens while minimising the risk of antimicrobial resistance development, thereby preserving their effectiveness for humans and animals alike. Gaining community trust Consumers clearly love chicken, but that love and trust doesn’t necessarily extend to the industry that produces it. It is often suggested that a lack of trust and community support is in part derived from a lack of transparency of the industry and its practices, compounded by a belief that the industry doesn’t contribute beyond its own business interests. With this in mind, in 2018 the ACMF will continue to explore and progress opportunities to provide assurances to its consumers as to the practices used and standards met, possibly through the adoption of a broader assurance program covering a range of attributes of concern to consumers (food safety, animal welfare, environmental management, antibiotic usage etc). The ACMF will also initiate a project to utilise new data on the economic contribution of the chicken industry to more effectively communicate to consumers and other stakeholders the contribution of the chicken meat industry and its value to Australia. To conclude, 2018 is expected to see Australian consumers’ love of chicken to reach new heights, and, if carefully managed, the industry begin to win back the trust of the consumer and community through turning the ‘challenges’ of old into new opportunities.

Australian Eggs: A quiet revolution in research and development corporations

n 2017 there was somewhat of a quiet revolution in poultry research and development corporations with both RIRDC and AECL undertaking rebranding processes and setting new strategic directions. AECL became Australia Eggs and RIRDC became AgriFutures. From the egg industry’s perspective, it was a year of rebuilding to try and position Australian Eggs and the industry to meet modern challenges. This process involved important steps such as the rejuvenation of the Board and management teams, a new ‘back to basics’ Strategic Plan that reflects stakeholder feedback, resetting the operation of our industry consultative committees to provide for greater farmer input and rebranding the company to provide for more effective public engagement on both eggs and the egg industry. While all of this change has been overwhelming at times, thankfully, it has been welcomed by the Australian Eggs team and there is a positive atmosphere that we are moving in the right direction. To a large extent, this positivity regarding the achievements of the industry, the role of Australian Eggs and the work of Egg Farmers of Australia (EFA) has been shared by our egg farmer stakeholders which is remarkable given the challenging market conditions that prevailed towards the end of 2017. While the improvements of 2017 were necessary, they were not the end-game in terms of services to the industry. These improvements formed part of a broader strategy to position Australian Eggs to take on some big challenges –

including turning the dial on long standing industry problems such as quality assurance and public engagement. In terms of quality assurance, there is an ongoing challenge of ensuring consistent quality outcomes across the industry and protecting all egg farmers from incidents that may have industry wide implications. To progress this, Australian Eggs released a revised quality assurance scheme in April 2017, Egg Standards of Australia (ESA). ESA includes a much higher degree of specificity than its predecessor, Egg Corp Assured, and acts to ‘lift the bar’ for the industry in terms of third party certification of farming practices. ESA also introduces three levels of certification – basic, core and comprehensive – to encourage a broader range of egg farmers to participate in the quality assurance process and ensure egg farmers operating to the highest standard in the industry can have that recognised. Despite the inherent difficulties of change, the implementation of ESA is progressing well with some successful ESA audits already having been completed in the last quarter of 2017. While egg farmers can be forgiven for focusing on the impact of these changes on their own farm, at an industry level, ESA has the capacity to drive more consistent quality assurance outcomes across the industry and address risks to the sustainability of the industry on the key issues of animal welfare, food safety and biosecurity. In terms of public engagement, there is both a challenge and an

Rowan McMonnies, CEO of Australian Eggs. opportunity in refining our engagement activities to address conjecture surrounding the egg industry and ongoing regulatory uncertainty. Influencing public policy is EFA’s job but there is an important role for Australian Eggs in enhancing industry sustainability by addressing the underlying cause of uncertainty through consumer engagement. While consumer engagement has always been an important aspect of Australian Eggs activities, it is timely to give this area greater structure and focus to demonstrate that the egg industry is engaging with consumer issues and concerns responsibly. The role for Australian Eggs is in conducting research and analysis to identify in a definitive way the issues of interest to the public and engage on how those issues can be progressed in the context of egg farming. This is likely to be a two-sided process in which consumers obtain a deeper understanding of the practicalities of egg farming and the industry is guided to continue to improve and have a mechanism to demonstrate that improvement. Australian Eggs is in the process of engaging with stakeholders on how this process could be most productively conducted with a view to developing a program under the 2019 Annual Operating Plan. With these initiatives in train alongside Australian Eggs core marketing and R&D services, the new year promises to be a busy one and we remain hopeful that the story of 2018 will be one of progress and improvement.

Australian Poultry Hub: Building on the success of the Poultry CRC

oultryHub Australia (PHA) is the successor body to the outgoing very successful Poultry CRC. PHA is located on the grounds of the University of New England in Armidale, NSW and began operating mid 2017. Since then, PHA has efficaciously run a number of events through the second half of 2017 including the opening of PoultryHub Australia, PoultryGrad and Ideas Exchange 2017. All events were well received and provided a great opportunity to network, catch up with colleagues and establish new connections. PHA’s Director Associate Professor Tamsyn Crowley commented that “Ideas Exchange 2017 was a fantastic forum enabling industry and researchers to get together, and I look forward to supporting many of the great ideas that have been discussed during the conference”. PHA aims to share knowledge, build capacity and create connections in the poultry industry. PHA will do this through, supporting research, developing education programs for schools and providing a range of poultry training options. Associate Professor Crowley explained that “PHA is in the unique position of

building on the success of the Poultry CRC, in other words, PHA will build on the best bits of the poultry CRC”. She attributes the early successes of Poultry Hub Australia to the solid foundation that has been built during the 14 years of the Poultry CRC, and looks forward to building on these in the years to come. PHA has secured industry funding and is looking forward to the first call for research early in 2018. This new round of research will add to the already existing PHA research projects, of which are preforming very well. Currently PHA is supporting research in the areas of animal welfare, nutrition and health. Associate Professor Crowley remarked “We look forward to seeing applications that are innovative, industry relevant and will deliver impact”. PHA’s focus for 2018 will include a host of activities designed to bridge the gap between researcher and industry. Including a data visualisation workshop for researchers in early 2018 and workshops for industry with the specific aim of identifying priority topics relevant to all sectors of the poultry industry. These workshops will also provide an opportunity to engage industry and enable R&D knowledge sharing

paving the way for greater impact and understanding in the future. As highlighted throughout the 14 years of the Poultry CRC, education is an essential part of building the industry’s future capacity. Building on the success of the Poultry CRC’s teacher resource kit, PHA will be further developing existing education tools, to provide interactive online resources on PHA’s website poultryhub.org. These resources will be complemented by engagement activities aimed at both primary and secondary schools. PHA is eager to continue the momentum generated by the Poultry CRC and Associate Professor Crowley is “excited to be part of such an important industry” and is “keen to hit the ground running in 2018”.
