Picture Books Help Children Learn to Build SEL Skills “Literacy” has multiple meanings, including competence in a specific area. Reading is a proven, time-honored way to build critically important competencies in children, especially social and emotional literacy. Reading is an inherently emotional act. Readers relate to and empathize with characters who face conflicts in a story. High-quality picture books can help children become more aware of their own emotions while practicing sensitivity and empathy toward others. The library is recognized as a safe space for children in part because librarians build collections to meet the needs of their readers, including social-emotional development. Just as letters make up phonemes that make up words that make up sentences that make up new ideas, reading can promote a similar progression for social and emotional learning. Picture books can become a framework for acquiring necessary SEL basics: awareness of self and others, language acquisition to label emotions, and reflection and self-expression. Equipping students with a love of reading and thoughtfully aware ways to respond to the challenging and changing world around them is key to their future success.

Literacy + Social-Emotional Development = Successful Child

ANNA BEST

ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR

became addicted to stories at an early age, possibly by living next door to a library. She discovered the darkly funny poems of Hilaire Belloc, Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear, Marriott Edgar, and Roald Dahl, which gave her a love of creepy tales told in rhyme. By taking English literature at Lancaster University, she sneakily combined study with enjoyment. She then taught college-level English. She has one grown-up daughter, one granddaughter, and two step grandchildren, and lives in West Yorkshire, England, with her husband and stripy whippet.

NATALLIA PAVALIAYEVA

is an illustrator and graphic artist in addition to being an Associate Professor of English Literature at Belarusian State University in Minsk, Belarus.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR

LLOYD SHERRATT of Staffordshire, England, always had a creative

flair for writing, particularly lyrics for his teenage band. He started telling children’s stories a decade ago when his sons were small. The dedication in Lloyd’s first book Big Dog and Squiz bears the words:“For Rachel Pickett. Will you marry me?” Lloyd said:“After 22 happy years and four boys, and after all Rach’s encouragement and help in editing the book, it seemed the obvious way to propose.”

LYNNE HUDSON is an author and illustrator. Originally trained in pottery, she switched to illustration when she realized that what she enjoyed most was decorating the pots she had made. She discovered a love of writing after writing a cover letter for a job she was applying to. She decided to start writing stories. Her advice to aspiring writers and illustrators is to just try it! ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR

JAMES LAYTON seriously forgot to grow up, so he’s pretty much still a kid in an adult’s body. James giggled his way through the writing of Would You Rather? with many scenarios so wrong they had to be edited out. The ones that survived the cut are because James is the publisher and there was nobody to tell him no!

KAT FOX is a true-blue Brit, born and raised in London. She landed in Australia

20 years ago and now resides in Torquay, Victoria, with her three crazy kids and surfer hubby, making the most of their coastal life. Kat has adored drawing since she was a little monster toddler. Specializing in illustrating children’s books came from reading to her kids every night. She was inspired by so many wondrous illustrations and how they added to the story lines so perfectly. Kat loves to bring a smile and a giggle through color and line.

A Bird Like Himself

Beetle in the Bathroom

What happens when a bird is raised by cows, sheep, and elephants? Baby the bird is raised by animals of all species, who lovingly provide play, food, and care as he grows up. However, there’s one thing they can’t do—teach the little bird to fly. When Baby meets a bird like himself, he realizes that the ability to fly was always inside him. This heartwarming book combines whimsical illustrations with a heartwarming story about nontraditional families, accepting differences, and realizing one’s abilities.

What’s in the bathroom when you close the door? This hilarious picture book in rhyme follows a narrator as he opens the bathroom door to find bugs everywhere! However, they aren’t just crawling around. A beetle sings in the shower, a butterfly puts on makeup, and a caterpillar clips its many nails. Brilliant illustrations are paired with clever rhyme to delight young readers in this funny, engaging book about bugs.

Picture Books A Case of the Can-Dos!

A Dragon Named Egg

By Jill Keppeler. Illustrated by Rachel A. DiNunzio

By Heidi Howarth. Illustrated by Daniel Howarth

Sophia has used a wheelchair most of her life. As such, many people say she can’t do certain things like swim, ride a bike, or do a cartwheel. Then, one day, Sophia wakes up with a case of the can-dos! She believes in herself 100 percent; she just needs to prove it to other people. She decides she wants to learn ballet, but she’s told she can’t join classes. So, Sophia sets out to prove that in her wheelchair, she can be a dancer!

It’s hard to be different. For Egg, it was almost impossible. As the first dragon ever born from an egg, he was remarkable, and he was unlike anyone else in his family. Small for his age, unable to fly or breathe fire, and given a silly name, Egg struggles to figure out how he fits in. However, sometimes the smallest being can make the biggest change.

Fatima was tired of people treating her like a child. Determined to prove her worth, she sets off to complete the tasks on Grandma’s to-do list. She resists all distractions. However, when she reaches her first destination, she realizes she has lost the list. Fatima is certain she remembers everything on the list and doles out instructions to her family accordingly. But as the family sits down to dinner, they slowly realize that, perhaps, Fatima didn’t remember quite as well as she had thought. No, I Won’t

By Rina Foti. Illustrated by Dave Atze

By Manica K. Musil. Illustrated by Manica K. Musil

What happens when an arrogant, impatient cat comes head-tohead with a humble, patient mouse? The possibility for change. Tiny Mouse is a game-changer who asks big questions. With each of her thought-provoking questions, Mouse is taking small but powerful steps to make the world a better place. Fun and entertaining illustrations by Dave Atze provide additional depth and cheeky humor to this simple story with a big message about diversity and tolerance.

Karl the Crocodile is tired of everyone telling him what to do. One day, he rebels. When anyone asks him to do something, he says, “No, I won’t!” Finally, everyone leaves Karl alone. A very lonely Karl realizes that sometimes it’s better to say,“Yes, I will.”

Paint with Magic

Pink!

By Sandi Wooton. Illustrated by Pat Kan

By Lynne Rickards. Illustrated by Margaret Chamberlain

This funny rhyming tale tells the story of an aspiring artist, an outrageous octopus, and a multitude of magical sea creatures. When a child paints an octopus with magic paints, the octopus comes to life, eager to offer plenty of advice on how the painting should be done. As the story and painting unfold, all the marine animals join in the fun, until the paint dries. Will it be the best painting ever?

Pink! is a heartwarming story about learning to be different. Patrick wakes up one morning to find he’s turned pink overnight. But boys can’t be pink! Rejected by his friends, poor Patrick runs away in search of new pink playmates. He crosses oceans where he finds some pink flamingos, but will he ever fit in with them? Patrick soon learns that friendship is never black and white, but that real friends will accept you just as you are.

Will has a lot to say, but he knows from experience that it’s not always safe to say what’s on his mind. At home and at school, with his father and his friends, Will has been gulping down his words for a long time. He doesn’t know how many more words he’ll be able to swallow. Then he meets a writer who won’t take back his words, and Will understands what being brave can mean. As Will’s words begin to flow, he tastes for the first time what self-expression without fear can be.
