Introduction

T

he Bible is filled with examples of people who overcame insurmountable odds through the power of God. These examples of God’s involvement in the lives of His people can encourage the children you teach to believe that God can help them overcome anything they face in their lives as well. When you teach these biblical accounts, your children will grow in their faith in God to provide, protect, and prevail in any situation. Five-Minute Sunday School Activities is designed to give teachers a quick activity that teaches an important Bible truth. Teachers are often faced with a few extra minutes after the lesson is finished. There are also times when a teacher needs a few moments to get attendance and other important matters out of the way before the main lesson. Instead of wasting these minutes with non-learning play, provide a Five-Minute Sunday School Activity! The activities in this book can also be used as entire lessons. Bible story references, teaching suggestions, and memory verses are included with each activity.

Extra Time

suggestions are given for each activity. If you have more than five minutes, extend the lesson time with the Extra Time option.

Jesus Healed a Little Girl Matthew 9:18-26

3 MEMORY VERSE He … took the girl by the hand, and she got up. ~ Matthew 9:25

WHAT YOU NEED page ?, duplicated ● crayons ● safety scissors ● tape ●

Before class Duplicate a pattern page for each child. For younger children, cut out the badge. Make a sample craft to show the children.

WHAT TO DO 1. Introduce the lesson by telling the story from Matthew 9:18-26. Say, The little girl’s father had faith that Jesus could make the girl alive again. Jesus loves when we have faith in Him. 2. Show the children the sample craft. 3. Distribute a pattern page to each child. 4. Say the memory verse. 5. Have the children cut out the badge and fold it on the dashed line. Tape the edge in at least one spot. 6. Have the children color the badge. 7. Fasten the badge to the children’s clothing with a loop of tape. Say, Jesus loves each of us. He wants to help us.

EXTRA TIME Cut the badge along the dashed line to make two badges. Have the children color the illustrated badge, and decorate the blank one as they wish.

Abraham Offers His Son as a Sacrifice Genesis 22:1-14

3 MEMORY VERSE By faith, Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. ~ Hebrews 11:17

WHAT YOU NEED page 12, duplicated ● scissors ● glue ● crayons ●

Before class Duplicate a pattern page for each child. Make a sample craft to show the children.

WHAT TO DO 1. Introduce the lesson by telling the story from Genesis 22:1-14. Say, God gave Abraham and Sarah a son when they were very old. Now God wanted Abraham to give up his son. Ask, Was Abraham willing to give up his son? 2. Show the children the sample craft. 3. Distribute a pattern page to each child. 4. Say the memory verse. 5. Say, Abraham was willing to do what God asked because he believed God would keep His promise that Abraham would have a son. Have the children cut out the words of the memory verse and place them in the right order on the alter. Ask them to draw a picture on the alter of something God wants them to do that might take faith for them to do; for example, being kind to someone who isn’t kind, or telling someone about Jesus.

EXTRA TIME Before your group draws pictures on their alters, discuss right things that are hard to do by asking kids to complete these sentences: 1) It’s hard to tell the truth when... 2) It’s hard to be kind when... and 3) It’s hard not to worry when...

Joseph Forgives His Brothers Genesis 37:17-36, 45:1-15, 50:15-21

3 MEMORY VERSE Forgive as the Lord forgave you. ~ Colossians 3:13

WHAT YOU NEED page 14, duplicated ● pencils ● crayons ●

Before class Duplicate a pattern piece for each child.

WHAT TO DO 1. Ask kids to show how they might look if they were mad at someone. Say, Let’s hear a story about some brothers who treated their brother very badly and how the brother reacted. Tell the story from Genesis 37:12-36, 45:1-15, and 50:15:21. 2. Distribute a pattern page to each child. 3. Say the memory verse. 4. Ask, How would you look if you forgave someone? Say, Let’s see how Joseph might have looked when his brothers asked him to forgive them. Have the children complete the picture by connecting the dots. Have them color the picture as time allows. Ask, Did Joseph forgive his brothers? 5. Repeat the memory verse. Say, God forgives us when we do wrong and tell Him we’re sorry. God wants us to forgive others too.

EXTRA TIME Seat the children in a circle. Ask them to take turns saying “I’m sorry that I...” and say an imaginary crime to the person on their right. The person will respond with “I forgive you,” then turn to the next person, apologizing for another wrong doing. Continue until everyone has had a chance to say, “I’m sorry” and “I forgive you.” 14

WHAT YOU NEED page 16, duplicated ● pencils ●

Before class Duplicate a pattern page for each child.

WHAT TO DO 1. Introduce the lesson by telling the story from Exodus 3:1-4:12. Say, God had a very important job for Moses that Moses didn’t think he could do. God told Moses He would be with Moses and help him do this important job. 2. Distribute a pattern page to each child. 3. Say the memory verse. 4. Say, Newspapers list jobs in a section called “want ads.” Let’s read a want ad God might have put in a paper for finding someone to lead the people out of Egypt. Ask an older reader to read the top section. 5. Tell kids to write a want ad for a job they could do for God.

EXTRA TIME Create a job bulletin board of jobs kids can do to help others or help the church. Title a poster board, “Jobs For Jesus.” Brainstorm job ideas with your group. Distribute index cards and pencils, asking kids to write a job on an index card then tape it to a poster board.

WHAT TO DO 1. Introduce the lesson by telling the story from Exodus 14:5-31. Ask, What impossible thing did the Israelites need to do? How did God help the Israelites? 2. Show the sample craft. Say, God helped the Israelites get across the Red Sea. After they got across, they sang a praise song to God. Let’s praise God for what He does for us. 3. Distribute a pattern page to each child and say the memory verse. 4. Have the children color the verse, draw pictures of something God has done for them, and cut out the memory verse circle. Direct them to glue the circle on a paper plate. Help them punch 3 or 4 holes on the edge of the paper plate and attach jingle bells with yarn to the sides to make a tambourine.
