IntrOluclion Do you look forward to going on trips with your family? Vacations are a lot of fun but sometimes you have to do a lot of work

...........

to make it that way. Maybe you've helped your parents as they pack suitcases or make arrangements for pets to be cared for and mail to be held. But once you are on your way you can relax and enjoy the change of scenery. Devotions with God are like taking a vacation. First you must

o

plan where you will go. Then you should gather together everything you need. Finally, you need to calm your mind so you can hear what He has to say to you through Scripture and prayer. The neat thing

[J

about spending time with God is that it's a vacation that never ends - you can journey with Him your whole life This book is filled with fun stories and activities to help you grow closer to Him . You will read about people who may remind you of those in your own life -

maybe even you! You'll see that

with God's help you can face any situation. You can read the devotionals in this book whenever you want , and in whatever order you like. Each one has a topic and a Scripture. Try to memorize it! Then there is a story and some ques...........

tions to answer. After your prayer, take a look at the activity. The projects and puzzles will help you act on what you've just learned.

, At the back of the book you will find answers to the puzzles (not that you'll need them!).

So let's get ready to go on a vacation with God. By the way,

D

don't forget the "Son" screen -

His light on your life will be very

bright! 9

God and Me!

WltoAmI? I am God's child.

I have summoned you by name; you are mine. -Isaiah 43:1

The Name Game Maggie Everts sat hunched over the kitchen table, staring at a blank piece of paper. She was frowning and chewing on her pencil. Wadded-up paper littered the floor. Her dad took in the scene as he walked through the door. "Hi, Mags," he said. "What's up? " "Oh, no! Not another one!" Maggie sighed as she scribbled on the paper. Her dad looked surprised. "Another what?" "Another name," said Maggie. Then she explained that Miss Jason, her teacher, had given the class a special assignment. They were to write a short essay about what their names mean to them. "That sounds interesting and kind of fun ," said Mr. Everts. "Well, 1 don't think so ," replied Maggie. "1 have too many names! You call me Mags and Mom calls me Maggie, except when she's mad, then it's Margaret Ruth. My 'wonderful' brother calls me Magatron or Maggot and the baby calls me Maa. Grandma calls me Meg and Uncle Ben calls me Peg. Yuck! 1 can't stand it!" "Hmm," her dad said. "1 see your problem. But you know what? You forgot the very best name. That's the name God calls you . He calls you His child - a Christian. "Now Margaret Ruth , Maggie, Mags, Magatron , Maggot, Maa, Meg, Peg Everts, why don't you just write about all your names? That should fill a couple of pages." Maggie giggled as she started writing. "What a paper this will be! "

Your Turn 1. What is special about your name? 2. What is special about being called God's child? \\That does it mean?

Prayer God, thank You for making me Your child. Help me always to be proud to be a Christian. Amen.

God and Me!

WL.o Am I was created in God's image. God created man in his own image. -Genesis 1:27

You Remind Me

Ot ...

The Ramirez family had just arrived at the family reunion picnic. Suddenly, a woman came running up and hugged Mrs. Ramirez. "Sally, I'm so glad to see you," said the woman. "Your daughter sure reminds me of you - same freckles, same color of hair. Catch ya later." She hurried off. "Cousin Rachel," Mrs . Ramirez explained to her husband, who watched the scene with a perplexed look on his face . Just then a man shook his hand. "Welcome, Jon," the man said. "Good to see you. " Then he looked at Clarise Ramirez and said, "Wow! You sure remind me of your Dad - same eyes, same nose." "That's Uncle Pete," Mr. Ramirez told Clarise. At noon, Clarise took her loaded plate and sat next to her grandma. "I'm sure getting tired of people saying I remind them of Mom or Dad," she sighed. "I'm me! " "Sure you are," her grandma replied. "But you're a little bit of your mom and dad, too. You even have some of me in you. All of the relatives here are alike in some way or another because we're all from the same family. "Actually," she continued, "all of the people in the world are alike in one way. They were all made in the image of God. That means we share God's nature and can love, be wise, be truthful, and enjoy all of the wacky relatives He gives us ." Clarise laughed and dug into her food. "Now you remind me of Grandpa," her grandma smiled. "You both love to eat! "

Your Turn 1. Who do people say you remind them of?

2. Why is it important that we're made in the "image of God"?

Prayer God, help me to remind others of You when they see how I act and hear what I say. Amen .

God and Me!

Who Am 11 My actions show others that I am a child of God. I am the good shepherd; I knaw my sheep and my sheep knaw me. -John 10:14

Remember Who You Are Amy was filling her backpack when Kelly called from the classroom door. "Let's go," she said impatiently. "Everyone's waiting." When Amy and Kelly joined the other girls, Marian gave Amy a salute. "Are you ready for your initiation into The Club?" she asked. Amy mumbled, "Guess so. " "It's so-o-o cool," said Heather. "Like taking candy from a baby." The girls broke up laughing over that remark. Amy wondered why she didn't feel excited about being invited to join The Club. After all, only the most popular sixth grade girls were in it. She was nervous so she tried to convince herself that the initiation wouldn't be very difficult. "This is your initiation," Kelly explained. "We're going to the candy store. Amy, you need to sneak a candy bar out of the store without paying for it and without getting caught." Remember who you are. Remember who you are. The words seemed to be cranked at top volume in Amy's brain. She told the girls, "I can't do that! That's stealing. Count me out." Then she headed horne. Amy told her mother what had happened. "Good for you!" said her mother brightly. "It took courage to do that. " "I remembered what Dad said," Amy replied. '''When you face a problem, remember who you are.' 1 remembered that I am part of the Chen family and we don't steal." "More importantly, you're part of God's family," her mother reminded Amy. "God's children do not steal or disobey."

Your Turn 1. Why would Amy want to join The Club? 2. How do you think she felt after she said "no"?

Prayer Dear God, help me to always remember who I am: Your child. Amen.

God and Me!

God has given everyone gifts and talents. It is the one and only Holy Spirit who distributes these gifts. He

alone decides which gift each person should have. -1 Corinthians 12:11

NLT

The Gifts of God Nevada James looked discouraged as she entered the house. Her backpack dropped to the floor. "You don't look happy," Mrs. James commented. "Mom, why did you name me Nevada?" she asked. "Is that why you're miserable?" "Not really. Mrs. Morgan picked Amy Johnson to play her violin at the assembly next Tuesday." Nevada had wanted to be chosen. "I practice just as much as she! How come I'm not as good as she is?" "Honey, Amy is gifted musically. It comes naturally to her. " Nevada sighed. "I'm not good at anything!" At that moment, Walter, the family dog, limped into the kitchen. "What's wrong, boy?" Nevada asked. She examined his paw and found a small piece of glass in the pad. After taking out the glass, she stroked his fur and said soothing words to him. Walter wagged his tail. "Nevada!" her younger brother Archie yelled from upstairs. "Can you help me with my math homework?" "Okay. Be right up!" Nevada gave Walter a final pat. Mrs. James smiled. "Still think you're not good at anything? God gave each of us gifts and abilities. I'd say He gave you the gift of a kind heart. Instead of wanting the gift someone else has, why not be thankful for what God gave you?" Walter barked as if he agreed.

Your Turn 1. What abilities has God given you? 2. What do you think God wants you to do with your abilities?

Prayer God, help me appreciate the gifts and talents You have given me. Amen.
