Introduction Young children are very inquisitive and love to learn new things - the most important of which are Bible truths. Because developmental growth in your small students involves eyehand coordination and perceptual skills, puzzles and pencil activities are excellent tools for teaching spiritual concepts to little ones. The activities in Big Puzzles jor Little Hands help children strengthen their language, counting, comparison and thinking skills . Even the youngest child, still uncoordinated with pencil or crayon, can use his or her fingers to point to pictures or follow mazes. With the variety of topics - over 75 different lessons! - you are sure to find puzzles related to your class curriculum. Or, consider using the puzzle sheets as complete lessons (suggested Bible story discussion points are included with each puzzle). Either way, be sure to send the puzzle sheet home with your students. They will be proud to show their parents their completed puzzles and the Scripture and story on the sheets will cue parents to the day's lesson points. Before you begin, here are a few hints to make the most of Big Puzzlesjor Little Hands: • Consult the Scripture index on page 7 to quickly match a puzzle with your curriculum. • Consider duplicating two related sheets back-to-back for class use and home extension. • Read the instructions for the activity to the children. You will also need to read aloud any wording within the worksheet. • Review the memory verse with the children as they work on the puzzles. Even though preschoolers cannot read, they are able to learn Scripture through repetition. • The puzzles vary in difficulty to meet the needs of your class. Teacher Talk Say, King Josiah commanded that the temple of the Lord be repaired. While the men were working, they found something really special - the Word of the Lord. They found the commandments that God had given His people. When King Josiah read the scrolls, he realized that God's Word told the people how to live good and right. He was sad because the people had been disobeying God's Word. The Bible helps us know how to obey God today.

Teacher Talk Tell Ezra's story in your own words to your students. Then say, The people gathered much like we come together today at church or Sunday school. They were excited to hear Ezra read the Word of the Lord to them. There was only one copy of God's Word. Not everyone had their own copies like we do today. Ezra stood where everyone could hear him as he read. When the people heard God's Word they bowed down and worshipped Him. God likes it when we listen to His Word .

Teacher Talk Say, When Jesus was 12 years old, His parents went to Jerusalem for a special celebration. They stayed there for many days, worshipping and praising God. When it came time to leave, Mary and Joseph thought that Jesus was traveling with relatives or friends. But when they went to look for Him, they could not find Jesus anywhere. Do you know where He was? Jesus had stayed back in Jerusalem asking questions about God's Word to the teachers in the temple. Jesus knew that God's Word was the best book in the world and would help Him to live a good life for God .

Teacher Talk Say, The Bible is very special and we should take good care of it. Long ago, God's people built a special place in which to put God's Word. There was only one copy. They wanted to keep it safe. So they built a beautiful box, called the ark of the covenant, out of gold. On top of the box they placed angles made of gold. Once the box was finished they placed the Book of the Covenant, or God's Word, inside. Special men were assigned to carefully carry the ark. When the people met to worship, the priest would take God's Law out of the ark and read it to the people. The people lmew that God's Word was very special and took very good care of it.

Teacher Talk Say, Long ago, God gave His Laws to a man named Moses. God wrote these Laws on tablets of stone so that the people would obey them. As time went on, these Laws were written on scrolls made of cloth. Stories about people who loved and obeyed God were also written on scrolls. These Laws and stories were passed down from generation to generation. Today they are written in our Bibles. The Old Testament part of our Bibles tells us these wonderful stories and laws of God. Teacher Talk Say, Old Testament people knew that Jesus, God's Son, would someday come into the world. They wrote about His coming and told people to watch for Him. Years later, after Jesus did come and was grown up, He went into the synagogue, or church, in His home town. Jesus stood up and read the Old Testament from a scroll. This writing told of the coming of a Savior. Jesus was reading about Himself. The New Testament tells about Jesus and how to obey Him. Jesus is the fulfillment of God's promises in the Old Testament.

Teacher Talk If possible, turn off the lights for a few minutes. (Have your students hold hands if they seem frightened.) Discuss how the darkness looks and feels . Turn the lights back on and discuss how light makes a difference. Say, God created light first because He knew how important light is. We get light from several different sources such as candles, lamps or flashlights. Do you know the source of all light? God is the source of all light.
