Long-time Fulshear residents, Tim and Karen O’Neill have been lovers of art for many years. Tim O’Neill first developed his love of art in Second Grade. A wise teacher gave her students a postcard each week featuring a different famous painting with the instructions to study and learn all about the piece. Tim has been fascinated with the art world ever since. The collection was started in 2006 with the purchase of two unsigned portraits from the 1800’s acquired at an auction house in Fairfield, Maine. Over the next four years over 150 pieces have been acquired, many of them by famous American artists. Late in 2010, Karen realized it was time to share their collection with the world. In her words, “We have always purchased paintings that we love and we hope other people will too.” Don’t miss the opportunity to own a beautiful piece of history through art. Cork & Culinary Fair

Hundreds enjoy a taste of France

s is typical in the country, the stresses, and hustle and bustle of big city life were invisible on May 7 as pristine white tents popped up across the plush green Fulbook pastures in preparation for the community’s First Annual Cork & Culinary Fair. Amidst the natural landscape, strolling musicians and art displays, an estimated 600 guests meandered through the tents, tasting delectable specialty foods paired with specialty wines from France. “What a fabulous upscale event in the country. There were cheeses and chocolates and cookies and a well-chosen French wine with each – and that was only the beginning,” says Fulbrook fan and broker Kristi Halphen. Special details and surprises peppered the event from start to finish. Upon arrival, guests were given a blue cork. Early in the day, as they passed through the tents, they voted by dropping their cork in the bucket of their favorite food and wine combination.

The winner, kept under wraps at the event, will soon be announced with special fanfare. “We are designing a framed event poster and proclamation letter signed by me,” adds Fulbrook developer and event creator Doug Konopka, “which will be presented to the winner, along with an event cork on a ribbon to hang in their restaurant.” Throughout the day, guests packed the seats under the Events Tent to watch cooking demonstrations featuring local chef Soren Pedersen from Ray’s Gourmet Country Grill, Florence-born celebrity chef Fabio Viviani and Top Chef series’ favorite Ilan Hall. Notes Doug, “It was standing room only as they shared secrets, threw food out to the audience, and signed cookbooks. The crowd absolutely loved it.” The presentation schedule also included insight from the viticulturalist consulting for Fulbrook’s vineyard, Fritz Westover, who gave an insider’s view of growing a vineyard in Texas, as well as wine connoisseur Tim Smith, the owner of French Country Wines near Rice Village. “My wife Phyllis and I travel to France several times a year seeking family-owned vineyards with wine made from organic grapes for import to our shop,” says Tim, “so we were thrilled to provide a taste of France for this unique Fulbrook event.” “The camaraderie between lot and homeowners and prospective buyers at these events is incredible,” adds Fulbrook sales manager Gayle Bowen. “I brought one of my customers who is from Norway and he was blown away to the point he may decide that Fulbrook will be his new home.”

Cross Creek Ranch Cross Creek Ranch is a Trendmaker Development, a ”premiere” master-planned community in Fulshear, Texas. Waggin’ Tails Pet Ranch is a one of a kind pet facility located in Fulshear, Texas. The “Ranch” is a beautiful 7600 square foot building set on 15 acres that offers boarding, grooming, daycamp, training and pet accessories. Waggin’ Tails is a totally different approach to the average boarding facility. The staff at Waggin’ Tails believes that when your family goes on vacation, so should your pets. The boarders have 4 acres of play yards complete with swimming. Waggin’ Tails Pet Ranch opened in October 2005 and is owned by Denise and Derek Einkauf. Denise has Animal Science and Biomedical Science degrees from Texas A&M University and has over twenty years of animal experience. Denise and Derek moved to Katy in 1998 and Denise taught science at Katy High School for five years before leaving to pursue her dream of opening a pet resort. They chose Fulshear as an ideal location because of its proximity to Katy and its small town atmosphere. The Einkaufs live on-site and Denise oversees every aspect of the business. Their two boys, Daylan and Donovan, attend Lamar Consolidated ISD schools, and the family is very involved with the community. Denise has been a member of the Friends of Huggins Elementary School board for six years. She was president of the board for the past 2 years. She also volunteers her time to many local fundraising efforts. Derek served on the Fulshear City Council for 2 years and is currently the Chairperson of the City of Fulshear Planning Commission.

Denise has a passion for animals and people and it shows in the operation of the business.

“We opened Waggin’ Tails to change the way that pets are boarded because we always hated to leave our pets in a ‘kennel’. We wanted to offer a ‘family’ approach to boarding. We get to know the dogs and owners personally. Our goal is to let the dogs have so much fun that they leave tired and happy and want to return. My favorite part of my job is watching dogs bolt from the car to get in the door here because they love us,” says Denise. Waggin Tails Pet Ranch has grown to 29 employeesincluding 17 “RanchHands”, or kennel techs, that make the pets their number one priority. The Ranch accommodates an average of 175-195 boarders per weekend in their 110 boarding spots. They also handle an average of 30-40 daycampers and 15 grooming dogs per day as well. Despite their size, Waggin’ Tails still manages to keep the “family” atmosphere and add the special touches that matter to pet owners. One example is Santa Paws where clients can purchase a retail item from the Ranch. The staff will wrap the present and open it with the pets on Christmas Eve. The owner then receives a picture of their pet opening his Christmas gift. Another example is personalized postcards are sent to every new client that boards with pictures of their pets enjoying their stay at the Ranch. The Staff also celebrates most holidays with the boarders with special “themed” treats and goodies.

One of many details that set Waggin’ Tails Pet Ranch apart from its competition is that it is ALL-INCLUSIVE. The Ranch offers Yappy Hour, Pats and Hugs, WoofN-Wade swimming, all for no extra cost. Waggin’ Tails guests also have the option of swimming in the boneshaped pool, participating in ice-cream socials during the hot summer months, and celebrating their birthday with their canine friends with special “dogs only” cakes. Waggin’ Tails has a small retail boutique at the facility that sells a variety of high quality pet items, including toys, treats, collars and leashes, and food. They carry Natures Variety food which comes in several flavors and is specially formulated for puppies and adults. The staff at the Ranch are firm believers in good nutrition and are well trained to help clients choose what food is best for their pets. Waggin’ Tails offers two types of boarding options for dogs. The luxury suites are private rooms complete with luxury beds and flat screen TVs. The other option is the bunkhouse, which houses 8’x 4’ foot runs that include cots and bedding. Both options are air conditioned and come with the owners’ choice of extras. Cats and other animals, including birds, guinea pigs, and rabbits, are also welcome to vacation at the Ranch. In addition to boarding, Waggin’ Tails Pet Ranch also offers Daycamp, grooming, and training services. Daycamp is a great way to for busy owners to allow their dog exercise and socialization while they are away at work. Day Campers enjoy a full day of outside fun with breaks for treats and hugs. Waggin’ Tails also provides full service grooming and pampering services in the Salon. They have two groomers, one of which has over 30 years of grooming experience. There is a professional trainer on staff that does training classes for obedience as well as private lessons and problem solving. The trainer, Debby Hoffman, has over 25 years of professional dog training experience and specializes in dog behavior and behavior modification.

Besides the day-to-day operation of Waggin’ Tails, Denise does a lot of community outreach events. The Ranch has the annual Hoedown each October benefitting Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP), and is open and free to the public. This event features live music, food, games, face painting, inflatable moonwalks, and trick-or-treating for the human guests. Dogs are encouraged to attend and can swim in the Wag and Wade pool, trick-or-“treat”, and be pampered in the Salon. They invite other city businesses and organizations to participate and bring give-aways or fun things for the kids to do. For 2012, the Hoedown will be on Saturday, October 13. Make plans to attend! Other community outreach events that Waggin’ Tails participates in are Fulshear Friday Nights and Freedom Fest, the Cross Creek Ranch Breast Cancer Walk, the Katy Arts for All Festival, and the Katy Rice Harvest Festival. In the fall, Waggin’ Tails hosts the FUMC Pumpkin Patch, which raises money for the Girl Scouts, The Wild West 4-H Club and FUMC Youth Group. Waggin’ Tails Pet Ranch is a member of the Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, Fort Bend Chamber Alliance, the Better Business Bureau, and the World Pet Association. Waggin’ Tails was also voted the Ultimate Doggie Daycare by the Houston Chronicle as well as Best Boarding Facility, Best Grooming Facility and Best Doggie Daycare by the Katy Sun. Waggin’ Tails is the 2011 Business of the Year for Fulshear, TX and one of the 2010 recipients of the BBB Award of Excellence. Descendant of John & Randolph Foster Receives Texas Family Land Heritage Award from State of Texas Department of Agriculture Richmond residents Jess Stuart, Julius Stuart Jr., and Clark Stuart received the Family Land Heritage Award from the State of Texas Department of Agriculture on behalf of the Stuart Ranch. The Family Heritage Program recognizes farms and ranches that have been in continuous agricultural operation by the same family for 100 years or more and the Stuart Ranch is being honored for being in operation for more than 150 years. To be exact the Stuart Ranch has been operating by the same family for 187 years. Very few ranches remain under the same family ownership for this many years, due to inheritance taxes and the financial drain to maintain the land properly. Family ranches and farms are the embodiment of the Texas legend. For many, working the land is a family tradition and these ranches and farms are living Texas treasures. To qualify for the Family Land Heritage Program, the owner must be a Texas resident who can trace the ranch’s line of ownership from the first landowner to the present. The program began in 1974 honoring families with 100

years of farming heritage. The Stuart Ranch received the 100 year award in 1976. So, in the year 2000 the State of Texas began honoring families with the 150 and 200 years or more of farming/ ranching heritage. Award winners receive a Texas Century Farm or Ranch sign for display on the property and documentation of the family’s history in the Family Land Heritage Registry. The history of the Stuart Ranch began on July 9, 1824 when John and Randolph Foster arrived in Texas with Stephen F. Austin as Members of the Old 300. The Old 300 were the first 300 Families to settle Texas back before it was a Republic. Jess Stuart’s Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather was John Foster and his Great, Great, Great, Great Uncle was Randolph Foster. Randolph Foster was here as early as 1817 and was a scout in Austin’s Colony. He was instrumental in the Runaway Scrape and the Texas Revolution as he supplied wild game to Sam Houston’s Army as they retreated to the Battle of San Jacinto. A portrait of Randolph Foster hangs in the State Capitol just behind the Speakers Stand in the State Representative Chamber. These are the two gentleman that today’s Foster High School is named after in LCISD. The School is located near the small community of Foster, Texas ¬(FM 359 and FM 723) which is where the Stuart Ranch is

located today. The Original Land Grant had 12,600 acres in 1824 and today the Stuart Family has 128 acres left that they are still ranching on. The Family lineage went from John Fosters Daughter Hettie Foster who married Francis Mayes. Then their daughter Martha Mayes married Benjamin Stuart and that is how the land has been able to stay in the same family all these 187 years. Stuarts Great, Great Grandfather Burienne F. Stuart was Fort Bend a County Commissioner in the 1890’s and Fort Bend County’s first Tax Collector in 1900. Today, Stuart says we are proud of our Families history on the land and being able to help start a great foundation to build the Lone Star State of Texas. The Stuarts look forward to 2024 as they will be making a third trip to Austin to receive the 200 years of continous ownership by the same family award. Jess Stuart says “he looks forward to forcing the State to hand out the 225 or 250 year award” as he says “we are carrying on Tradition and Legacy for the long haul”. The Stuarts will continue with the family history of operating the ranch as a cowcalf operation for many years to come. Stuart ends by saying “To the Dedication and Perseverance of the Founders and Heirs of these lands, we owe the basic wealth of Texas”.

Mayor Kuykendall Mayor Tommy Kuykendall was elected to office in May 2010. Mr. Kuykendall, a lifelong resident of Fort Bend County, has resided in the City of Fulshear since 2000. Mr. Kuykendall was re-elected as the president of the Fulshear Development Corporation in July 2010 and previously served the City of Fulshear on the Fulshear Planning Commission from 2002 to 2010. He has modeled his service to Fulshear and guides his daily decisions as Mayor on the slogan “Fulshear deserves the best.” With an eye to the future, carefully guided growth and a cohesive mobility plan, Mayor Kuykendall sees a Fulshear full of possibilities; a community that encourages economic growth and maintains a quality environment for its residents. Mr. Kuykendall graduated from B.F. Terry High School in Rosenberg, Texas. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He has volunteered in various roles with the American Society of Engineers Houston Branch serving as president of this 3,000 member organization in 2007. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Central Fort Bend Chamber Alliance and is a member of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Kuykendall is a licensed Professional Engineer working as Vice President and Manager of CivilCorp, LLC’s Houston Branch providing civil engineering and surveying services to governmental, municipal and private clients. Mr. Kuykendall has been married to his wife, Rhonda, for 25

years. They have a 14-year old daughter, Alyssa, and a 12-year old son, Ty. Their children attend Logos Preparatory Academy in Sugar Land. Rhonda has been active in volunteering with her children’s school, strengthening child abuse laws in the Texas legislature, and pursuing a photography career. The Kuykendalls are active members of the Avenue N Church of Christ in Rosenberg, Texas. How Mosaic Was Born By Jennifer Heath

For Lisa Theut, it just seemed natural. She had been taught all her life the value of giving back. She loved her family, friends and community. She wanted to do something nice for the residents of Fulshear in return. “Being the mother of a 9 year old who is heavily involved in the community here with sports, I wanted to offer a service to my friends and residence of Fulshear,” Theut said. “I am a firm believer that you give back what you have received from. Fulshear has afforded my family a wonderful style of living and a peaceful existence.” So after a year and a half of preparation, Theut opened the doors to the Mosaic Boutique in April 2007. The store, located at 8504 FM 359 in Fulshear, carries styles of clothing and accessories to fit anyone. They cater to those who are hip and funky, classic and timeless. Mosaic Boutique also carries pajamas, perfume, lotions, frames and accessories. “People should shop at Mosaic for not only our great customer service, but for convenience as well,” Theut said. “Mosaic is a specialty store with an experienced staff able to assist individual clients to select items which accentuate their positive attributes. Also, I realize people have busy schedules and don’t like to run into malls. Therefore, I only order a limited quantity of each item so that there is something different for everyone.” A Texas girl, Theut grew up in Victoria and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing Management from Texas A&M University. Growing up, she imagined she would follow her mother’s footsteps and work as a nurse. “I can’t stand the sight of blood or the smell of hospitals, though,” Theut said. But she did take a few characteristic traits from her mother. She learned about trust, honesty and never giving up. “My mother has been the most forging and impressive person in my life,” Theut said. “Not only did she give me life, but her

constant wisdom, attitude toward others and her example of unconditional love coupled with an unmatched work ethic as a single parent has given me the tenacity to embrace life.” That perseverance came into play when it took more than year for Theut’s dream of opening a high-end boutique in Fulshear to come to fruition. “My friend and I worked on the store name for a month,” Theut said. “I knew it had to be a name that would pop. One day, we just took out the dictionary and started searching. As soon as she said the word ‘mosaic’ I said, ‘That’s it! Mosaic Boutique!’” Theut dreams of one day opening more Mosaic Boutiques in neighboring towns so more people can enjoy the unique shopping experience. Key Service Providers Fort Bend County Municipal Utility District 81 Fort Bend County Municipal Utility District 81 is a State of Texas established water and sanitation district that provides water, solid waste and sanitation waste services to the about 75% of the residents of Weston Lakes. The District is supervised by an elected board of Directors from the community. They establish tax rates, maintain the water and sanitation system in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Texas Commission on Environment Quality (TCEQ), and ensure a quality of service unsurpassed by water service providers. The current representatives, President Bill Dubois, Directors Vic Zdunkewicz, Bob Machen, Ray LeBlanc, and Bob Pfaffenberger work diligently to ensure the availability and quality of the water within the District and the efficiency and effectiveness of the sanitation systems servicing the residents of the District. The operator of the District is Severn-Trent Services and they can be contacted for repairs at 281 398-8211 or for billing at 281 579-4500. Garbage and Recycle Pickup is provided by WCA Waste Corporation at 281 368-8397. MUD public meetings are on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 9:00 AM in the Precinct 3 Annex next to the Library at 8100 FM 359, Fulshear, Texas 77441. The District has an active Emergency Preparedness program and has participated in the City of Weston Lakes and Fort Bend County Emergency Preparedness programs. Women’s Association Weston Lakes Women’s Association The Weston Lakes Women’s Association was started in 1987 to provide an avenue for women in the development to socialize and forge new friendships. The group membership has grown steadily with the increase in population. Membership is open to all within the Fulshear, Simonton and Weston Lakes area. Some of the earlier activities have become traditions; for instance, the Christmas Home Tour, which will be held this year on December 10,2011. Tickets are available for purchase from Patricia Benson (713-824-2677). Proceeds go to the Community Foundation. Although the initial purpose of the Women’s Association was to socialize and build friendships, they also decided to include philanthropic activities. In 1991, a Silent Auction was held to raise funds for community charities. As these charitable activities grew, the Weston Lakes Women’s Association Community Foundation, Inc. (non-profit 501C(3) was formed and has become a very important focus for the group. Fund raising events are held every year to add to the Foundation so that grants and need-based scholarships can be disbursed to deserving high school students in this area. Grants are also provided to a wide range of community organizations and programs in the northwestern portion of Fort Bend County. In 2010, the Foundation raised over $29,000. Scholarships and grants were awarded to 6 local area high school students; and some of the community organizations receiving grants include: Friends of the Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Library; Fulshear/Simonton Lions Club; Foster High School Library; and Fulshear Fire Department. The amount of monies distributed is totally dependent upon the generosity of the businesses and residents in the Fulshear, Simonton, and Weston lakes area. Last year, the first 5K Walk-A-Thon was held in September and it raised ~$8,000. Because it was such a huge success, the Women’s Association has scheduled the 2nd Annual 5K Walk-A-Thon for Saturday, October 8. Your interest and participation is critical to surpassing last year’s results. Golf Associations The country club sponsors golf associations for men, ladies and senior men, and also hosts a couples’ golf group on Friday and Sunday nights. Each golf association hosts regular weekly play-days, and also offers members the opportunity to engage in friendly competition during monthly or semimonthly golf tournaments. The most notable of these tournaments include the Member-Guest and Club Championship golf tournaments. Women’s Associations The Weston Lakes Women’s Association is a social organization that promotes fellowship and community spirit among its members. The association also sponsors the annual “Community Challenge” through its non-profit foundation in order to provide scholarships for area students and to support other community organizations. Weston Lakes Country Club also hosts regular meetings for the Garden Club and several bridge and bunko groups. Swim Team The Weston “Lakers” swim team is open to children and teens (ages 5-18). The swim team practices throughout the week at the country club pool, and competes in swim meets against teams from other communities. Junior Camps Golf and tennis camps are available throughout the summer for members and their guests. Instruction is focused on developing individual skills by teaching the fundamentals of the game. Participants also learn the rules of the game, as well as etiquette and on-course strategy.

ob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library opened in May 1998, the third branch voted for in the 1989 bond election. The land for the library site had been the Precinct 4 headquarters, and was offered for the library site by the precinct commissioner, Bob Lutts, who had taken on the task of seeing the library project through. The Fulshear City Council requested that the county name the library for Commissioner Lutts. (This library is now in Precint 3.). The Friends of Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library was organized to support the branch with extra funds for things not provided for in the county budget. The group has an ongoing booksale in the branch, as well as sometime special sales. Over the years, the organization has purchased the marquee to announce and advertise programs and resources available in the library and the display cases in the building. They also provide funding for the Summer Reading Club programs and supplies, as well as funding for children’s and adult programming throughout the year. The Central Fort Bend Chamber Alliance has a new President. The Chamber’s Board Chairperson, Kamal Ariss, announced today that Shanta Kuhl will step into the President/ CEO role on Tuesday, August 23. Kuhl is currently President of the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce, a 700-member organization in Seguin, Texas. She joined the Seguin Area Chamber in September 2007 where she led the Chamber in purchasing, renovating and undergoing a capital campaign for a new office building. As a result, the Seguin Area Chamber received a Texas Downtown Association Award for Best Renovation for a new Chamber building. Previous to Seguin, Kuhl served as President of the Taylor Chamber of Commerce for 10 years. There she worked to create an atmosphere of open communication between business, government and other key community stakeholders, which led to the creation of a wireless community network system, marketing cooperative and becoming an All America City finalist.

A native of Round Rock, Kuhl is a graduate of Texas State University, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations & Journalism. She has also graduated from the Institute for Organization Management, a four-year certification program for Chamber professionals. Prior to her Chamber career, Kuhl worked at the Johns Community Hospital in Taylor as the Director of Marketing and Community Education. She has been married for 27 years to Duane Kuhl. They have two daughters, Merrideth and Katy. Kuhl takes over for Angie Sanders, who was appointed Interim President after the resignation and retirement of Gail Parker in early May. Parker served as President/CEO of the Chamber for just over seven years. Sanders will return to her Development Director position upon Kuhl’s start date. Leadership Fort Bend Class of 2011 Graduates

Sollie Davis, First Victoria Bank, Selected by His Peers as Leader of the Year The county’s oldest leadership program, Leadership Fort Bend, graduated its 26th class Thursday, May 5 at Columbia Lakes Resort in West Columbia. Since 1986, The Central Fort Bend Chamber Alliance’s Leadership Fort Bend has trained and educated some of the most successful, innovative and civic-minded professionals and volunteers in the region. On May 5, 27 individuals joined the select group of Leadership Fort Bend alumni after a two-day retreat at Columbia Lakes Resort in West Columbia. For the third consecutive year, each member of the graduating class was asked to vote, via secret ballot, for the “Leader of the Year” award, an honor bestowed upon the graduate deemed by their peers as best exemplifying the qualities of hard work, loyalty, dedication to the community and leadership. Sollie Davis, of First Victoria National Bank, was the 2011 recipient. He was presented with the award by 2010 winner Scott Burgess, CPA, who is now a member of the Chamber Board of Directors. Insurance agent Jeff Tallas was the 2009 winner. Davis, who is the Assistant Vice President/Rosenberg Banking Center Manager, is a former Marine who has taken an extremely active role in the Chamber, frequenting ribbon cuttings and chamber events. In his spare time, Davis likes to spend time with his wife Laila and play golf, basketball and soccer. “It was an honor being voted by peers, and hopefully I’ll be able to take a piece of each of them with me as I go on with my career,” Davis said.

First-Class Leadership at First Victoria, Texas’ Oldest Independent Bank

he moment a visitor enters Ken Olan’s secondfloor corner office at the Katy branch of First Victoria National Bank, the framed albums catch the eye. Arlo Guthrie, the Rolling Stones, Jackson Browne, among others, all with the 33 LPs tucked inside. Sunlight glints through the partially opened blinds and across the neat desk. Kenneth W. The Bank’s Founders On May 17, 1836—the very same day Victoria County was created—the City of Victoria became the county

seat. Seven months later, on December 20, 1836 and hundreds of miles away in the state of Illinois, John Milton Brownson was born. While the former event served as a significant moment in Texas history, the latter would later form what would become the oldest, continuously owned family bank in Texas. John Brownson moved to Texas with his parents in 1852, settling in Clinton in Dewitt County, just northwest of Victoria. John’s father, Theron, operated a general store. When the Civil War began, John enlisted and served in the 8th Texas Cavalry, Company E, the regiment also known as Terry’s Texas Ranger’s. Due to partial paralysis from an injury he received in the war and because of his record of service, he was made assistant quartermaster, helping to acquire goods for the troops. Mr. Brownson returned to Texas after the war ended, settling in Victoria in 1866, where he and A. Goldman opened a grocery store. According to the book, First Victoria: A History of Service, “since Brownson dealt with his customers’ accounts and credit lines typical to grocers of the era, he soon moved into the banking industry.” A year later, in 1867, he opened the town’s first bank under his own name, Brownson’s Bank, rent free, in a room in the Goldman building.

Brownson and Sibley fulfilled the need of the rugged ranch and farming community in Victoria by providing a reliable banking system. The bank became a lifeline to area cattlemen, providing much needed capital. It quickly became commonly known as the “Cattleman’s Bank”— strong, independent, and progressive. In fact it was the most prosperous and widely known bank in Southern Texas.

Born Leaders Ken Olan started at First Victoria in June of 2007. Born and raised in northwest Indiana, he graduated from Munster High School and then attended Indiana University in Bloomington, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in business. “I then lived in Chicago for 14 years prior to moving to Sugar Land in 1994 when I took on a leadership role at what was then Bank United.”

Eugene Sibley was born in Mobile, Alabama on September 16,1851. After the Civil War, he joined his brothers, Origin and Frank, in Port Lavaca. In 1869, Eugene followed his brothers to Victoria and joined them in the planing mill business.

Since joining First Victoria four, short years ago, his accomplishments have been long and varied. “I led a team to revitalize the Retail Banking Division,” he says, easily transitioning from my curiosity about the albums on the wall to the business at hand. “I also introduced a highly successful Free Checking and Free Small Business Checking program, in 2008, which has been tremendously attractive to residents and small businesses in the markets we serve. In fact, when combined with our intense focus on being a bank that is customer-centric and easy to do business with, the free checking offering contributed to record new household growth.”

played an important catalyst to the expansion. “We’ve designed a different kind of banking experience here at First Victoria and for even greater convenience have opened our first in-store banking centers at the Richmond and Rosenberg Kroger Marketplace stores.” The First Victoria Banking Center within the Rosenberg Kroger Marketplace opened in December 2009 with Sollie M. Davis as the banking center manager. Born and raised on Houston’s North East side (5th Ward Community), Davis moved to San Diego, CA for 11 years after joining the United States Marine Corps. Since joining first Victoria, “I’ve worked hard to grow the bank’s community relationship throughout Rosenberg/Richmond and the surrounding communities.” Prior to joining First Victoria, Sollie already had 13 years of experience in the banking industry in a wide array of roles including Retail Banking, Commercial Banking and SBA Lending, so he knows the importance of having a relationship with the community in which you work in and has worked hard to achieve that goal. Davis, an active member of Central Fort Bend Chamber Alliance was selected by his peers as The 2011 Leader of the Year for the CFBCA’s Leadership program. He is also active in the Houston Citizens Chamber of Commerce, CASA, Teach the Children to Save, Family Fun Day at the Park sponsor, and is a Lakewood Church Volunteer. Mr. Olan heads a team—that includes Mr. Davis—with energy, enthusiasm and wit. They are like a family with a synergistic ebb and flow that makes a day crack with excitement. “I’m proudest of being a thought-leader and cultural change agent who is able to create a forward-thinking vision for the business and then create buy-in across the enterprise to move the ball forward,” Olan added. “My business philosophy is to hire the best people, to be the best you can possibly be within your industry, to understand and deliver on the stated and unstated needs of your customers and to WOW them each and every day by doing even more than they expect.” When asked about his leadership philosophy, Olan didn’t hesitate in adding, “My leadership philosophy is one of integrity, involving, informing and inspiring our team so they feel enriched in their role, fulfilled in what they do and can communicate, with confidence, that First Victoria is the only bank you’ll ever need.”

A born leader, he created and introduced the First Victoria V-Source Center™, featuring a wide range of nontraditional services our customers can take advantage of: Internet cafe, coin counter, photocopier, fax, laminating, coffee bar, children’s computer, a library of self-help books, and more. “The objective of the concept is to help make the lives of our customers easier by creating a menu of commonly needed services all in one place, many of which are free. To make our brand of banking even more attractive we’ve also introduced something we call First Victoria Table Stakes, which include a wide variety of customer-friendly things we do every day to show our care for, and appreciation of, our customers.” Is it any wonder, Mr. Olan was one of three finalists in the Bank Administration Institute’s 2010 Maverick Banker of the Year Award? Reflecting his ability to understand and focus on his audience, it’s no surprise that his first great accomplishment was appearing as the “center ring act” on the Bozo’s Circus television show on super station WGN TV, Chicago in 1977. Olan had originally thought he would be a doctor or lawyer but really wanted to run or own his own business. It’s obvious that Olan’s mind doesn’t stop thinking. When asked about his energy level, Olan added with a hint of a smile, “Doing nothing can really bore me. That said, ironically, in today’s day and age of non-stop activity, just being still can sometimes be as exciting as is can be boring. Needless to say, I hate waiting in lines whether at the grocery store or a stoplight.” An obvious insight into his customer service philosophy. He credits his parents and family as having the most positive influence on him. “My parents taught me to learn, to be a caring person and to look out for others, and my wife and kids have taught me to not take my self too seriously and to keep things fun and real.” At one time, Olan enjoyed cartooning, playing soccer (which he lettered in) and playing tennis. Today, his hobbies include golf, tennis, cycling, public speaking and writing. In fact, Mr. Olan published a book in 2006 called FlashPoint: Ignite Your Potential. The book was written to help young adults, and adults of all ages, accelerate their success and personal happiness. It took him eight years from the time he started outlining it to publishing it and acknowledges that the important lessons he learned from his parents helped him to stick to it. “They taught me to be who you are. Do what makes you happy, and success will follow. Family is first.” Married to Susan—an educator and avid tennis player— for almost 25 years, they have a daughter Rachael, who is finishing her senior year in college, and a son, Michael, who is starting his freshman year in college this fall. “My son, Michael has an unbelievable wit and my daughter,

Rachael, is a budding entrepreneur,” he confides. When asked what is the best way anyone can compliment you about your work, Olan easily responds “To tell me they can see that I care about the work . . . doing the right things in the right way.” And it’s obvious that not only does he care about his work, he also cares about the people he leads. Although he really doesn’t have a typical day or one thing that takes up most of his time, he most enjoys spending his time planning, creating, leading and motivating. If trading places were possible, Mr. Olan said he’d trade jobs with Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks. “Mark and I went to school together at Indiana University. We lived in the same apartment complex and occasionally would watch sports together on his big-screen TV. He was creative and entrepreneurial, as am I, and I think I could have a lot of fun and make an even bigger contribution to society with a platform like his.”

Expansion Undoubtedly, Brownson and Sibley would approve of these men being part of the First Victoria Family. The founders achieved incredible success in a very short time. Six years after moving into the Brownson Building, Brownson and Sibley acquired 22 additional shareholders and became the First National Bank of Victoria. Showing a capital stock of $150,000.00—a huge sum in that day and age—the bank began issuing its own currency. National money and other monies (such as bank deposits and notes) were still issued under the gold standard in 1889, but First National Bank of Victoria’s strength enable it to issue the notes against the institution’s own assets.

great accomplishment was, “Becoming a United States Marine. I was always told that this would be the hardest thing that I would ever do in my life and that becoming a Marine is not for everyone. I was told by many that I would not make it because I was a nice guy.” Those people obviously didn’t understand the determination and focus of Sollie Davis. For downtime, Sollie writes poetry, reads, plays basketball and enjoys golfing. When asked what he disliked doing when he was younger, he didn’t hesitate in saying “Growing up, I hated cleaning the house. My mom made us clean all the time and it had to be spotless. That’s both ironic and a testament to my Mom, because as I got older I got a job as a janitor of a hospital and I only held that job for a few months because my department was the cleanest every week. I was then promoted to head of the department. It also came in handy during my tour as a Marine. We would have to clean our barracks every Thursday for inspection and my room was always ready.” It’s clear how his mother influenced the disciplined man he is now. Although Mr. Davis doesn’t find his job the least bit stressful, if he could, he would trade jobs with Joel Osteen. “He is the smiling preacher and everyone

Family & Faith “My mother had the most positive influence on me,” Sollie Davis relates as he begins the tale of his own journey to First Victoria National Bank. “She was a single mother with five kids in a two-bedroom house that worked many different jobs. Most times she would work sixteen-hour days doing two different jobs. Some days she would be so tired she couldn’t make it out of the car when she got home. She would fall asleep in the car. The most amazing thing was that no matter what the job was (housekeeping, bartending, sales, etc) she was the best at what she did.” Known for his easy-going nature, Mr. Davis says his first

likes you if you can just smile,” he says with a laugh. As a child, he wanted to be a Motivational Speaker. Not surprisingly one of his proudest accomplishments at First Victoria is sending out the quote of the day. “I would send out a quote every day to my team to help motivate at the beginning of their morning. The bank got word of it and now the bank has created the “Quote of the Day” on our bank’s intranet page to help motivate all employees. These are not just my quotes that are published. Anyone can send in a quote.” Usually at the office by 8 AM, the first thing Mr. Davis does each morning is send out his “Thought of the Day” to his team. “I check a few reports. I have a lot of interaction with customers in person and by phone. I usually have some event to attend in the community. I always finish my day returning emails or phone calls.” On a typical day, checking and following up on either takes up most of his time. A rising star among many stars at First Victoria National Bank, Mr. Davis says the best way anyone can compliment him about his work is to smile and say ‘thank you’. His mother taught him to put GOD first and to learn from his mistakes, adding, “Life is a wonderful journey and she always said that I should enjoy every moment.” His family would say that Mr. Davis is the funniest person in their family and that his wife, Laila, is the most serious. With another laugh, he says the longest project he’s ever worked on was convincing his wife to marry him. “It took me 12 years! But it was well worth the wait.” Currently, they reside in Houston with their two dogs, Rocket and Sadie.

Ushering in a New Era First National Bank of Victoria continued its exponential growth, even after the deaths of its two founders. In 1914 the bank reorganized and became Victoria National Bank, moving into the five-story Welder Building at the corner of Main and Constitution. As a complement to the bank’s success, the interior of the Welder Building offered ornate ironworks, marble columns and marble counters. A second-floor gallery gave visitors a view of banking activities. It was a landmark of beauty and elegance and became a cornerstone for the bank’s downtown complex. In 1937, nine years after Victoria National Bank, acquired the Welder property, the building was completely remodeled and paid homage to its image as the Cattleman’s Bank by featuring a bas-relief mural in the main

entrance. The mural depicted pure-bred Herefords, oil wells, and the railroad. On the morning of June 24, 1953, a new era began at Victoria National Bank. Its customers were introduced to the convenience of banking by car. ‘Curb Teller’ was located on Constitution Street, but the actual teller was in a special room under the sidewalk. In 1959, an ambitious million-dollar expansion began, adding additional space for a new boardroom, a meeting room for community use, and a totally new look. In 1963, with the renovations completed and a modern exterior covering the old façade, First Victoria National Bank was born.

Fortitude Everything in the office is planned and organized down to the letter. Therefore, it is hard to believe that Mr. Olan disliked organizing things when he was growing up when his organizational skills are so spot-on today. In addition to his hectic work schedule and his busy family life, he’s been involved in a variety of organizations since moving to the Houston Area including the boards of the HISD Foundation, TREK and The Jewish Community Center of Houston. “I’ve also done volunteer work with students at charter schools Kipp Academy and YES College Prep.” “The banking industry has become more challenging in recent years,” Mr. Olan acknowledges as everything is once again a whirlwind of activity with everyone preparing to move on to the next phase of their day. As he and Miss Estelle, his mom, head toward the door, he pauses a final moment. “At the same time, each challenge leads to an opportunity to create something better, new and different.” The story of First Victoria National Bank has been an incredible one-hundred-forty-four year journey and is far from over. Descendants of the original owners and investors still sit on the board today, including the board’s Chairman Michael Anderson, and the family’s commitment to helping build a stronger Texas hasn’t changed. A visit to Clevell Harris’s online gallery (www. clevellharris.com) immediately evokes a visceral reaction. The two 30”x24” “Blue’ paintings include Miles Blue and Coltrane Blue catch the attention. As the name suggests, the paintings of the Jazz greats are almost entirely blue. The hints of white and black complements, intrigues, and captures the imagination. Pink Awareness is a haunting, dramatic canvass that was created for the Pink for a Purpose’ Breast Cancer Awareness Mixer hosted by Media Alliance of Houston and held in Mosaic on Hermann Park.

“I was asked to create something for the event two days before it was scheduled,” he says, glancing at the portrait where it is now showcased at Chef Rey’s Restaurant in Missouri City. “I worked on the canvas around the clock.” Looking at the painting online is a treat, but seeing it in person brings a new level to the experience. Anyone who has suffered or is suffering through breast cancer— anyone who knows someone—can well imagine what the woman is thinking: despair, shock, hope, and determination. Born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Mr. Harris credits his dad, Cleveland, with passing on his artistic abilities. “My father is an artist. That’s where I got my artistic talent from. He isn’t a professional artist, but he was always painting or drawing something when I was a kid.” Currently residing in Missouri City, Mr. Harris moved closer to some siblings and other members of his extended family after visiting the 4th largest city in the nation. He also saw more chances to do things here from the art sense. “There’s the theatre and museum district here, constant development, and I’m an avid sports fan, so I go to a lot of the Rockets’ games.”

He went to school for graphic design and currently operates Harris Design, producing print and web design. But he’s always been an artist. “Drawing has always been my thing. Drawing and illustration.” For several years, he worked with the Education Center Inc, a publisher of teachers’ magazines and supplemental education materials, as well as other advertising agencies and technical corporations . He decided to venture out, so he could focus on creating his art. “I did a few murals. Those murals led me to do more fine art on canvas. Mostly, music or jazz related paintings that convey motion or emotion. That sort of thing.” For the past ten years, he’s also been a successful licensed real estate broker in North Carolina and Texas. Mr. Harris donated his painting, ‘Adventure Through Reading’ to Kashmere Elementary School’s library. It’s an explosion of color that promotes reading. The background images bring to mind childhood favorites and the rocket soaring to the moon seems to shout to students that they can fly as long as they try. Three of his abstracts, Turbulent Mirth, Upliftment, and Radiant Motion is part of a series and brings you through a journey that begins a hovering darkness and ends with the brilliance of overcoming. Most of Mr. Harris’s paintings are One of One and he mainly works with acrylics and pastels. He’s placed his art through people that he’s met and has some artwork showcased at Green Loop Living and Chef’s Rey’s Restaurant. If someone needs a painting at a particular time, as in the case of Pink Awareness,

he’ll get it done. “Most of the time, I have a painting that I’m working on in my inhome studio.” He has been commissioned to do artwork for the Tracy McGrady Foundation and the Juwan Howard Foundation. “The Tracy McGrady Foundation has opened libraries for a couple of underprivileged schools. I did the artwork for Kashmere Gardens Elementary School and was there for the ribbon cutting with school and city officials and representatives from the Tracy McGrady Foundation. I try to spread myself out in the community with my real estate and my artwork.” He’s also working with his niece who is showing some artistic ability. “She has the whole left-handed thing going on, like me. She definitely has talent and I’m trying to help her bring that out.” In the near future, he is planning to open a business that will offer art classes and camps in a fun atmosphere where he’ll also have a small gallery to showcase some of his own work. “Basically, people will get to paint with me or other artists, but we’ll have fun with it. A lot of people have an interest in art, but they don’t explore it. At a young age, explore creativity. Don’t get too boxed in with stuff that you see others doing. Don’t be afraid to spread your wings.”
