HELLO We are delighted to share with you the new drama season at the Rose – bringing new writing, world premieres and critically acclaimed directors. Following on the success of the American season this Autumn, featuring Good Canary directed by John Malkovich and Arthur Miller's All My Sons, we are thrilled to take you to the shores of Naples for what promises to be the most anticipated theatrical event of the year – the first stage adaptation and world premiere of Elena Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend, a twopart production of Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan quartet. Hailed as one of the most exciting and compelling contemporary literary voices today, Ferrante's sensational, highly addictive novels paint a portrait of a consuming female friendship against the backdrop of social and political turmoil in Italy from the 1950s to the present day. Adapted by April De Angelis and directed by Melly Still. Our other world premiere comes in the form of Sandi Toksvig’s hilarious new comedy Silver Lining, directed by Rebecca Gatward (Beryl), a Rose co-production with English Touring Theatre and a survival tale of five extraordinary women fighting for their lives… in a retirement home! April welcomes Junkyard, a brand new musical by BAFTA Award-winning writer Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child). With an exceptional creative team behind the production, including Academy Award-winning
composer Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love) and award-winning director Jeremy Herrin (Wolf Hall, People, Places and Things), this coming-of-age story about friendship is another exciting Rose co-production with Headlong, Bristol Old Vic and Theatr Clywd. We don’t just do drama, we also have a jam-packed calendar of events for the young, and young at heart, including The Twits (a Rose Theatre co-production with Curve Leicester) and many many more. If you are interested in any of our family shows, see the highlights on page 12-13, pick up a family brochure or visit our website. We couldn’t do the work we do without your help and support. Visit our website for more information on how you can ensure the work we do in the local community continues. Don’t forget to make the most of the Rose Café, which provides homemade cakes and a wide variety of drinks (which you can pre-order before the show), in a relaxing setting, with free wi-fi and regular events throughout the year. With so much on offer, we look forward to welcoming you to the Rose soon.

Written by Sandi Toksvig Directed by Rebecca Gatward On one dark and stormy night in the upper day room of the Silver Retirement Home, five elderly ladies are trading stories of their remarkable lives. With the storm floods rising and no rescue team in sight, the ladies are faced with the sudden realisation that in order to survive they are going to have to do what they have done for their entire lives – do it themselves! Silver Lining is the hilarious new comedy by writer, actor, presenter and political activist Sandi Toksvig, directed by Rebecca Gatward (Beryl). Starring Sheila Reid (Benidorm), Joanna Monro (Charity Begins) and Amanda Walker (The Tudors), with further casting to be announced, it tells the tale of 5 extraordinary yet forgotten women, who come together one treacherous night to recreate The Great Escape – senior citizen style! This World Premiere production of Silver Lining is brought to the stage by English Touring Theatre and Rose Theatre Kington. ETT’s recent work with the Rose includes The Herbal Bed (HHHH ‘Gripping’ The Independent, HHHH ‘Beautiful’ The Telegraph). 03

A two-part adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan quartet by April De Angelis Directed by Melly Still This modern family saga chronicles the lives of friends, Elena and Lila, following them from their childhoods in a poor, tough neighbourhood of Naples, through passionate love affairs, burgeoning careers and family struggles. But even as life repeatedly tries to pull the two in separate directions, Elena and Lila remain inextricably bound to one another. A powerful story of love, violence, sex, ambition, genius and self-destruction, the two-part play is an exploration not just of female friendship and rivalry, but of Italy after the war and the decades of political turmoil and cultural change that followed. Regarded as ‘one of the most exciting and compelling contemporary literary voices today’, Elena Ferrante was chosen this year as one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people on the planet. Very little, however is known about the hotly debated identity of the author, who for the past 20 years has written under a pseudonym. The final book in the quartet, The Story of the Lost Child, was shortlisted for the 2016 Man Booker Prize. Ferrante’s books celebrate female creativity and this production features some of the most exciting talents around – adaptor April De Angelis (Jumpy, Royal Court) and director Melly Still (Coram Boy, National Theatre), both known for their powerful and engaging theatre work. This stage adaptation condenses Ferrante’s four novels (My Brilliant Friend, The Story of a New Name, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, The Story of the Lost Child) into one play presented in two parts. Audiences will be able to see both parts in one day, or on separate days.

Book and lyrics by Jack Thorne Music by Stephen Warbeck Directed by Jeremy Herrin It’s 1979, rubbish is on the streets, and it’s tricky being Fiz. She’s 13, she’s got no money, her sister’s pregnant and her mum thinks she’s a waste of space... Rick remembers what it’s like to be a teenager. So when he decides to build a junk playground in Bristol, he’s pretty sure he has the charisma to get a bunch of reluctant kids involved. He’s wrong. But with some old-fashioned emotional bribery, Rick persuades Fiz, Higgy and Ginger to help him. And the project turns from something that means nothing to something that means a lot. And kids that care about nothing, start to care a lot. But darkness has a way of coming back and biting you when you least expect it. A brilliantly honest and witty new musical from BAFTA Award-winning writer Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, This is England ‘90), and Academy Award-winning composer Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love, Wolf Hall, Jerusalem). Directed by Evening Standard Award-winner Jeremy Herrin (Wolf Hall, People, Places and Things, This House), Junkyard is a coming-of-age story about friendship and standing up for what matters. Rose Theatre Kingston and Headlong previously co-produced 2015’s The Absence of War (HHHH The Guardian, HHHH The Stage).

“Mr Twit was a twit. He was born a twit. And, now at the age of sixty, he was a bigger twit than ever.” Mr Twit has a very hairy face. His beard is spiky and smelly. It also contains cornflakes, sardines and even some stilton. Mrs Twit is equally as foul and she hates Mr Twit just as much as Mr Twit hates her. The Twits really are the most spiteful and revolting couple you could ever hope to meet. They spend their days playing wicked tricks on each other and mistreating Muggle-Wump monkeys. They also have a particularly sticky trick to catch Roly-Poly birds for their bird pies. But not for much longer because the monkeys have a cunning plan to teach those terrible twits a lesson. Recommended for ages 6+.

KINGSTON SHAKESPEARE SEMINAR (KISS) The Kingston Shakespeare Seminar (KiSS) brings leading international Shakespeare scholars to the Rose, which Sir Peter Hall developed to be a ‘teaching theatre’. Here Sir Peter directed Dame Judi Dench in a celebrated production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. More recently, Trevor Nunn directed the John Barton and Hall adaptation The Wars of The Roses at the Rose. But KiSS also commemorates Kingston’s historic connection with Shakespeare, which goes back to the great actor David Garrick – who lived here, and built the Shakespeare Temple beside the Thames – and to the first performances of some of Shakespeare’s best loved plays at nearby Hampton Court. Seminars are held every Thursday in term-time at 6.30pm-8pm in the Gallery of the Rose. They are free and open to the general public. Regular KiSS conferences also take place at the theatre and Garrick's Temple. rosetheatrekingston.org
DORICH HOUSE MUSEUM
STANLEY PICKER GALLERY
One of London’s hidden gems, Dorich House Museum at Kingston University is located a ‘Deer’s Leap’ from Richmond Park, along Kingston Vale in South West London.
Stanley Picker Gallery at Kingston University is a public venue supported by Arts Council England, dedicated to the commissioning, production and presentation of innovative practice across art, design and architecture.
The former studio home of the Russian sculptor Dora Gordine and her husband the Hon. Richard Hare, a scholar of Russian art and literature, this listed building was completed in 1936 to Gordine’s own design, and is an exceptional example of a modern studio house created by and for a female artist. Following Gordine’s death in 1991 the house was acquired and renovated by Kingston University and is now open to the public as a fully accredited museum. In the spirit of Gordine’s exemplary life and career, the Museum operates as an international centre to promote and support women creative practitioners. Artist Hilary Lloyd was appointed the inaugural Dorich House Fellow in autumn 2015.
From its island location along the Hogsmill River, the Gallery generates an on-site, offsite and on-line programme of fellowships, exhibitions, participatory projects and events. In 2017 the Gallery celebrates its 20th anniversary with an exciting programme including new commissions by current Stanley Picker Fellows Yemi Awosile and Simon Martin, and an ambitious new live work by artistmusician Anat Ben David with design-studio Boudicca (pictured).
