This season sees us welcome some of the best names in theatre and film with our Rose Productions. Following his hit epic The Wars of the Roses, the legendary Trevor Nunn returns with his take on King John – a political thriller resonating with our modern time of scheming politics and media madness. The production also joins our celebration of Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary and marks Trevor’s penultimate play in his mission to direct all of Shakespeare's work. Oscar Award nominee John Malkovich makes his London directing debut with the English speaking premiere of Zach Helm's hard-hitting and edgy Good Canary; and acclaimed American director Michael Rudman presents All My Sons – the first Arthur Miller to be staged at the Rose.

Based upon real events from Stratford-upon-Avon in the summer of 1613, The Herbal Bed is a powerful thriller about human desire. When William Shakespeare’s daughter is publicly accused of adultery, her family’s lives fall under the glare of intense public scrutiny. Culminating in a dramatic trial at Worcester Cathedral, the scandal threatens to destroy her family’s reputation within their tight-knit community. Originally produced to great acclaim by the Royal Shakespeare Company, The Herbal Bed was a huge hit in the West End and on Broadway, with an Olivier Award nomination and writer Peter Whelan winning Playwright of the Year. The production features a beautiful original score by acclaimed Icelandic composer Valgeir Sigurðsson (previous collaborations with Bjork and Damon Albarn). It is directed by Royal & Derngate Artistic Director James Dacre whose recent credits include King John in a co-production with Shakespeare’s Globe and the UK tour of Brave New World. The remarkable cast includes Emma Lowndes (Downton Abbey, Jane Eyre), Philip Correia (Doctors, The History Boys), Jonathan Guy Lewis (Coronation Street, Soldier Soldier), Patrick Driver (EastEnders, Holby City, The Bill), Michael Mears (The Bill), Charlotte Wakefield (Mamma Mia, Holby City) and Matt Whitchurch (A Midsummer Night’s Dream). 07

Following the sell-out success of The Wars of the Roses last year, we are delighted to welcome back legendary director Trevor Nunn to direct Shakespeare’s epic battle of ascension, King John. Richard the Lionheart is dead. His youngest brother John has become King of England despite claims from the French that the throne should go to his nephew, Prince Arthur. As war is declared between England and France an inheritance dispute is brought before the King by Richard’s illegitimate son, ‘the Bastard’. With its political allegiances and ruthless scheming, this is a rare opportunity to see some of Shakespeare’s most fascinating characters live on stage, including the wildly outspoken and corrosive Philip the Bastard and King John, England’s weakest and vilest King, ‘a walking disaster of a ruler’ as described by contemporary chroniclers. The production marks Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary and will be the penultimate play in Nunn’s undertaking to direct all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays. 09

Award-winning actor and director John Malkovich makes his London theatre directing debut in this English speaking premiere of Zach Helm’s gripping play Good Canary. Malkovich’s previous productions of the play enjoyed sell-out performances in Mexico City and Paris, where it was nominated for six French Moliere Awards, winning for Best Director and Best Design. Following rave reviews for his first novel, Jack is on the verge of signing a multi-million-dollar deal with a leading publisher. With his wife Annie struggling with addiction and mental illness, will she cope with the public scrutiny that comes with success? Set in New York, this hard-hitting and provocative play explores the spiral of self-destruction and the cost of creativity. Californian writer Zach Helm has spent years honing his craft in Hollywood and establishing himself as one of the most interesting and promising writers and directors of his generation. His work includes Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, Stranger Than Fiction starring Will Ferrell and Dustin Hoffman, and the forthcoming Jumanji. Oscar Award nominee John Malkovich’s extensive film career includes Places in the Heart, Dangerous Liaisons, In the Line of Fire, Being John Malkovich and Burn After Reading. His Broadway directing credits include Arms and the Man in which he also performed and The Caretaker. 11

ALL OR NOTHING: THE MOD MUSICAL

Featuring the music of The Small Faces In 1964, a new phenomenon exploded onto dingy British streets. It was the essence of all that was cool: it was Mod. The Small Faces encapsulated all that is Mod and they also shared another passion: their dedication to Rhythm n Blues. Celebrating the unique sound of this iconic band, this new musical includes brilliant hits including Whatcha Gonna Do About It, All Or Nothing and Lazy Sunday. This exciting tale is the stuff of Rock’n’Roll legend: the story of four charismatic young kids whose humour, passion and, above all, talent, rockets them into the big time - only to discover the path to success is heaving with corruption and betrayal. WHEN WE ARE MARRIED Northern Broadsides present JB Priestley’s classic comedy Directed by Barrie Rutter The Helliwells, the Parkers and the Soppitts are highly respected pillars of their community… but not for much longer. Married on the same day in the same chapel, they gather to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. The celebrations are short lived when they discover the vicar wasn’t licensed and they are actually not married, but have been living in sin for 25 years. Watch as the pandemonium switches from horrified social embarrassment to the realisation that they are free from the shackles of long tedious marriages. J B Priestley’s heartily entertaining comedy plays right into the hands of the remarkable Northern Broadsides – a company celebrated by audiences for its charisma and vitality.
