HELLO And welcome to Summer 2013 at the Rose. The Rose is a cultural centre for people from across South West London and beyond. We’re celebrating our sixth year with our most ambitious season yet. There really is something for everyone, including three fresh Rose Theatre Productions, brilliant visiting companies and a range of work for young children and teenagers. We also have music and comedy of all kinds and for all tastes, as well as festivals, celebrations, talks and special events. We put our audiences at the centre of everything we do: you’re not just our customers, you’re our friends. Come and join us.

The relationship between the decadent, drug-addicted Nicky Lancaster and his flamboyant mother, Florence, still packs an extraordinary punch. Bri is a school teacher. His wife, Sheila, loves amateur dramatics. But their daughter Josephine is more than they bargained for and life is getting difficult… This fast-paced black comedy blazes with the love and pain, anger and strain of a young couple raising a seriously disabled child. Highly theatrical, frequently heart wrenching and often very funny, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg (1967) is one of the finest plays of the modern British theatre. 2013 is a bumper year for Peter Nichols, with West End revivals of Privates on Parade (1977) and Passion Play (1981).

OCKHAM’S RAZOR

NOT UNTIL WE ARE LOST This breathtaking 60 minute performance brings the audience into the heart of the action, as images unfold above and around, creating physically and emotionally affecting environments that question how solid, how fixed is the world around us? Returning to the Rose, award-winning aerial theatre company Ockham’s Razor mix circus, physical theatre and narrative story-telling in a series of short stories exploring what it is to be lost. The performance features an original score, performed by a 20-strong choir put together specially from the local community. 13

GREAT EXPECTATIONS Book by Gerry Flanagan Music & Lyrics by Annemarie Lewis Thomas An imaginative, dramatic and entertaining musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic coming-of-age story. The colourful cast of characters includes the young hero Pip, Miss Havisham, the blacksmith Joe Gargery, the icy Estella, Herbert Pocket, Mr Jaggers and the convict Magwitch.

Kingston Connections will take you on a journey that draws on the creative relationships that connect our cultures, countries and continents. LET ME IN Mon 1–Wed 3 Jul Once again, the Rose presents Let Me In, a mini festival of work for – and sometimes by – people with a range of learning disabilities.

IYAF Thu 11 –Sun 28 Jul The International Youth Arts Festival, organised by Creative Youth, is rapidly becoming one of the largest and most diverse youth events in the country. In 2012, 7000 young people came together from over 20 countries to celebrate over three weeks. Join us in 2013 as the streets and venues of Kingston come alive with young people showcasing the very best in youth arts.

Sun 26 May 7.30pm The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra makes a triumphant return to the Rose this spring with a delectable programme of classical masterpieces. Mendelssohn’s superbly crafted and atmospheric Hebrides Overture introduces Mozart’s delicate and melodious Flute and Harp Concerto. This beautiful work will be performed by two of the rpo’s celebrated principal players – flautist Emer McDonough and harpist Suzy Willison-Kawalec. Beethoven’s glorious Symphony No.7 completes the programme, a perfect demonstration of this great composer’s mastery of the symphony.

Two women astronomers, Jessica Bell from the 21st century and Caroline Herschel from the 18th, look up at the same night sky and find themselves colliding in their search for understanding. Jonathan Miller started as a doctor but, following the unexpected success of Beyond the Fringe, was lured away from medicine. His career has spanned directing for television, theatre and opera while maintaining a lifelong interest in medical science and neuro-psychology.

Richard Bean, the writer of Smack Family Robinson, is one of Britainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most successful playwrights. His many plays include Toast, Harvest (Royal Court) and the sensational award-winning National Theatre, West End and Broadway hit, One Man, Two Guvnors.

Opening Hours

Mon–Sat 10am–8pm (6pm nonperformance days), Sun, one hour prior to a performance only. We regret bookings for future shows will stop 30 mins before a performance begins. Pre-order your ice creams, programmes and merchandise with your tickets.
