HELLO And welcome to our new style season brochure. I hope you like it. I’m delighted to announce four new Rose Theatre Productions. The Second Mrs Tanqueray is the tragedy of a fallen woman marrying into society: sexy, witty and extraordinarily moving, Pinero’s masterpiece changed British theatre forever. Our family show at Christmas, Cinderella The Midnight Princess, tells the classic story with jokes, magic and the sublime music of Mozart. Noël Coward’s The Vortex is one of the most electrifying plays of all time and is given the fresh Rose treatment. And we’re thrilled to present Richard Bean’s black comedy Smack Family Robinson, directed by the much-loved Richard Wilson. But there’s so much more. The inimitable Propeller are back with The Taming of the Shrew and Twelfth Night, and Northern Broadsides return with the groundbreaking Rutherford and Son, directed by Jonathan Miller. And there’s children’s theatre, as well as concerts, talks and one night shows. I want the Rose to offer something for everyone, from the youngest child to seasoned pensioners, regular theatre buffs to people wanting a good night out. The Rose is a special place. Come and enjoy it.

Stephen Unwin Artistic Director

The Rose is nestled on the banks of the River Thames amidst a bustling array of restaurants and bars.

When Aubrey Tanqueray marries for the second time, he knows that his new wife, Paula, is ‘a woman with a past’. But he has no idea how that past will catch up with him. Olivier Award winner Laura Michelle Kelly (Paula) played Mary Poppins in the West End, Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings and starred alongside Kevin Spacey in Speed-the-Plow at The Old Vic. James Wilby (Aubrey) won the Best Actor award at the Venice Film Festival (with Hugh Grant) for his title role in Maurice. His numerous screen appearances include Howard’s End and Gosford Park.

TESS OF THE D’URBERVILLES By Thomas Hardy Adapted & Directed by Ciaran McConville Following the success of The Crucible last spring, Rose Youth Theatre, Rose Plus Players and Versophiles join forces for this year’s community production. Tess is a lowborn country girl. When her family discovers that they might have ties to nobility, she is sent to rescue them from destitution. Hardy’s masterpiece is a heart-rending love story, in which tradition clashes head-on with modernity.

What do you do if your mother’s lovers are the same age as you? Noël Coward’s follow up to Hay Fever was described as ‘un peu shocking’ and was his first great success. The relationship between the decadent young Nicky Lancaster and his highly-sexed mother scandalised its original audiences and still packs a punch.

NORTHERN BROADSIDES

RUTHERFORD & SON By Githa Sowerby Edited by Blake Morrison Directed by Sir Jonathan Miller Your father is a control freak The family business is a millstone round your neck Home feels like a prison And yet you have dreams … This powerful drama is an unflinching portrayal of an Edwardian family on the brink of collapse. John Rutherford is a tyrannical patriarch, blind to the hopes and feelings of his family. The success of the family firm takes precedence over everything… even happiness. There are few dramas as uncompromising or rewarding as this. Northern Broadsides brings its trademark gritty, no-nonsense approach to this astonishing play that sees Artistic Director, Barrie Rutter, taking the role of the imperious John Rutherford.

PROPELLER

TWELFTH NIGHT THE TAMING OF THE SHREW By William Shakespeare Directed by Edward Hall Edward Hall’s internationally-renowned Propeller brings two of Shakespeare’s finest comedies to the Rose. One thing is certain: nobody does Shakespeare like Propeller. One of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies of love and confusion, Twelfth Night tells a twisted tale of mistaken identity, transformation and deception. With a man playing a girl disguised as a boy, illusion and reality are almost indistinguishable on Propeller’s island of Illyria. In The Taming Of The Shrew, two disguised, competing suitors clamour for the hand of beautiful Bianca whilst gold digging Petruchio agrees to wed her viciously ill-tempered sister Kate sight-unseen.

Drama has always been a huge part of Italian life. The street is a stage in Italy; it presents the opportunity to create a spectacle at any given moment.

At Carluccio’s, this spirited approach makes us who we are. We’re noisy about food. We taste it, we try it, we argue about it until it’s exactly right. It’s the Italian way – and it’s how we’ve worked since 1991.

For a taste of good food and drama pop into one of our Caffès for a warm Italian welcome!
