The team were a credit to the school and performed exceptionally well. inferno suffered from a mysterious mechanical problem and therefore did not perform to its usual standard. They are powered by a 24 volt DC motor and two 12 volt batteries and compete in two 90 minute races with pit stops for driver changes. Track speeds are in excess of 30mph and Blaze completed 36.8 in race one and 38.2 miles in race two. The pit crew also won the Silverline Tools Pit

Bedford Free School – TOP OF THE TOWN

Bedford Free School’s progress measures show it to have been top of the town once again. Its Progress 8 score is +0.17. “Progress 8” (P8) is the main accountability measure by which schools are judged. Half of schools in the country are positive and half are negative. BFS has a provisional P8 score of +0.17 in the tables published and publicly available on the DFE website. Bedford Free School (BFS) staff and pupils are celebrating this achievement but are ambitious for much more. Executive Principal Stuart Lock said: “We want to be a world-class school with unrivalled levels of achievement and progress. We are ambitious to ensure the delivery of our academic curriculum and our extremely high standards of behaviour mean that we are one of the best schools in the country. It is exactly what I would want for my own child and what the children and families of Bedford and Kempston deserve.”

Every child to climb a mountain – literally and metaphorically

At Bedford Free School, pupils are regularly challenged to ‘climb the mountain to success’. The metaphor is used to describe the resilience, dedication and hard work that we instil in every pupil so that they are successful in aspiring to go to a top university. The aim is that 100% of our pupils will attend university, and as many as possible to attend highly selective universities. This year, as part of the BFS menu of trips and activities, which include international trips to Italy, Austria, France and Spain, all Year 7 pupils are this year going to be invited to climb Mount Snowdon with the school. We believe that this experience is the kind of thing young people should be entitled to, and the kind of thing good schools should encourage and demand their Open Evening and Open pupils do. Moving from a 2 bed Bedford Property to a 4 bed will cost you £730 pm by Nigel Bywater Director of Sales/Finance Belvoir Bedford T: 01234 290685

Moving to a bigger home is something Bedford people with growing young families aspire to. Many people in two bedroom homes move to a threebedroom home and some even make the jump to a four-bed home. Bigger homes, especially three bed Bedford homes are much in demand and it can be a costly move. If you live in Bedford in a two-bedroom property and wish to move to a fourbedroom house in Bedford, you would need to spend an additional £184,805 (or £729.98 pm in mortgage payments (based on the UK Bank average standard variable rate). However, going straight to a four bed from a two-bed home is quite rare as most people jump from a two to three-bedroom home, then later in life, from a three to fourbedroom home. So, after being asked my thoughts on moving home in Bedford by a friend recently, please find my analysis of the local property market and then some thoughts. To start with, let us see what the average property price is for a Bedford property by the number of bedrooms it has. Average Property Price in Bedford by Bedroom 1 bed 2 bed 3 bed 4 bed 5 bed £149,558 £214,245 £271,055 £399,050 £636,571

I then decided to calculate what it would cost to make the jump upmarket

from one bedroom to two bedrooms, two to three bedrooms etc, etc, both in actual money and in mortgage payments (using the current standard variable rate of UK Banks of 4.74% - so the mortgage cost could be higher or lower depending on the mortgage taken).

1 bed to 2 bed 2 bed to 3 bed 2 bed to 4 bed 3 bed to 4 bed 4 bed to 5 bed

they face stiff competition from these 20/30 Housing Stock in Bedford by Bedrooms 2 bed 3 bed 4 bed 5 bed 1 bed 37.97% 17.88% 6.84% 10.15% 27.15%

Bedford Price Difference Cost per month to to make the move up market (Mortgage) move £64,686 £255.51 £56,810 £224.40 £184,805 £729.98 £127,995 £505.58 £237,521 £938.21

There are some interesting jumps in costs when moving upmarket as a Bedford buyer. The cost of moving from one to two beds, and two to three beds is relatively reasonable, whilst the jump from three to four beds in Bedford is quite high (and hence why some four bed properties are taking slightly longer to sell nowadays). On an aside, a lesson here for all my landlord property blog readers, you can quite clearly see why the larger 4 and 5 bed properties don’t offer the best returns for buy to let because the monthly finance costs and rents achieved don’t match up so well (i.e. A mortgage for a 4 bed home in Bedford would cost you 47.22% compared to a 3 bed mortgage, but the jump in rent would be a lot less than that - although depending on your circumstances, 4 bed homes can offer other advantages to buy to let – pick up the phone if you want to know what they are in more detail). So, coming back and looking at the stock of properties in Bedford, this also makes interesting reading … The most active purchasers are 20 something and 30 something homeowning parents with growing families. Many look to more modern developments for the perfect balance of access to decent primary schools, commutability and lifestyle. For landlords looking to buy within Bedford,

something families, making the three bedroom Bedford home massively in demand, often attracting spirited offers and selling within weeks of listing. This mix of homebuyers and landlords is a pressure point in the Bedford property market. Again, if you are a landlord, call me and I will show you areas with decent returns where you aren’t in so much competition with young Bedford family homebuyers. Yet, the cost of an additional bedroom can be too much for some Bedford buyers. It is quite challenging moving home the first time, but to then find you are priced out on the next move up the ladder can be quite disconcerting, with families often having to move to a different part of town to get the bigger home they need. Nevertheless, that’s the place many homeowners find themselves in with the cost of the additional bedroom being too much to bear. To those buying their home for the first time, all I suggest is they not only consider the mortgage payments and other costs of their first home, but also do their homework into their next rung up the Bedford property ladder. Thinking about it now will keep you ahead of the game in the future; as your number of bedrooms, family property needs and lifestyle wants change. ..and Bedford landlords – well these changes in the way people live also mean there are opportunities to be had in the Bedford rental market. Many Bedford landlords are starting to pick my brain on this, so if you don’t want to miss out – drop me a line via our Blog: www.bedfordpropertyblog.com

A visit down memory lane at Westfield

iT WAS back to school with a difference for former pupils of Westfield School. The four visitors were amongst the first intake at the school from Harpur Central back in 1965 and this was their first visit back. They were met by the Deputy Head, Peter Thornes and a group of pupils who gave them a guided tour of the building as it is today with all of its new facilities.

Caroline Ramsey is the only one of the four ladies who still lives in Bedford. Margaret Bradley now lives in Sheffield, Jill Williams lives in Suffolk and Diane Pickering in Essex. “What an enjoyable and nostalgic visit we all had reliving so many memories,” they said. “We received a very warm welcome and were given a tour of the whole school. “We were particularly impressed with the

obvious happy and respectful relationship between staff and pupils. “Well done Westfield school, you should all be very proud of yourselves and in turn we are proud to be associated with you.” Pupils and Peter Thornes pictured with visitors – left to right – Caroline Ramsey, Diane Pickering, Margaret Bradley and Jill Williams.

Drum & Bass Roadshow is a hit in Great Denham

gREAT Denham Community Hall was host to a national drum and bass roadshow on Saturday the 7th october, attracting over 50 participants to the 90 minute class, burning approximately 700 calories each to the beats of drum and bass music. The event run by Fight Klub® and arranged by local instructor Chantell McKnight was a raving success, and something that the community of great Denham have never seen before. it was a morning of high intensity boxing, kick boxing and dance set to drum and bass tunes, all done around free standing punch bags. the perfect way to burn calories, tone and condition. Speaking to some of those taking part Jessica says ‘it’s a fun experience and you think you haven’t got the energy to carry on but you have and you find it because you enjoy the fitness as you have a laugh and do it to the music.’ Lisa was buzzing afterwards ‘Bringing everyone together in one big group was exhilarating and the buzz you got lasted hours! Everyone is so friendly... who says you can’t have fun when pushing the limits of exercise!’ Whereas Chrystal simply stated ‘The most fun i’ve ever had working out!’ This was a one off special event for great Denham, however there is a weekly Drum and Bass class hosted in the community hall at on a Thursday evening. The regular class is run by Chantell and is an equipment free combat inspired HiiT class to drum & bass music, it’s all based around punching, kicking and conditioning drills, with a bit of butt and core conditioning thrown in for a total body work out. Different from a lot of choreographed classes out there, drum and bass work out is completely free style, so every week is different, live and completely exhilarating. Talking about the weekly class Donna ‘i enjoy this sort of exercise, and i have never liked traditional pre-set classes, but this is so not the norm - i love it!’. For more information about the weekly class contact Chantell on 07743 004519, cmcfitness28@ gmail.com or on Facebook @cmcfitness28. TO WHOM THE LIGHT SHINES THROUGH

All Saints’ Day (1st november) is a very special day for me. This festival of the church when we celebrate all god’s saints, living and departed, was the dedication of two churches that have played an important part in my life. i grew up worshipping at All Saints’, Ealing Common which was built as a memorial to Spencer Perceval the Prime Minister who was assassinated in 1812. Later i was Vicar of All Saints’, Rotherham, a wonderful sixteenth century minster church in the centre of the town. At both places the marking of All Saints’ Day was special, especially the joyful singing of ‘For all the Saints’. For all the saints who from their labours rest, Who Thee by faith before the world confess, Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest, Alleluia! Alleluia!

HELP STAMP OUT HATE CRIME

“i’ve been delighted to lend my support to national Hate Crime Awareness Week (14 – 21 october) led by the charity, Stop Hate uK. “i have been only too pleased to quite literally sign up to Bedfordshire Police’s campaign, in which the public put their names to campaign posters, signing to state clearly that there is no place for prejudice in this county as it can be devastating to be picked on because of your faith, race, gender, sexuality or as a result of a disability. “Sadly, Hate Crime is one of easiest crimes to commit because it can be as simple as shouting foul abuse. However, it can cause a deep wound that not only terrifies the victim, but divides and builds walls of suspicion between communities. “As PCC, i’m delighted to confirm that i encounter examples, almost daily, of our communities living in a tolerant and harmonious way together. unfortunately, there is a small minority

RAIL USERS TAKEN FOR GRANTED

i want to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part in the recent consultation on government proposals to scrap intercity train services at Bedford station. The plans would mean slower journeys to and from London, and a loss of the direct link to the East Midlands and beyond. Such damaging proposals would obviously have a big impact on many thousands of people in Bedford Borough. The government boasted of working with East Midlands Councils on the plans, yet did not even make so much as a phone call to us. They also excluded Bedford from their long list of public consultation meetings. i said at the start of the process that the

But who are these saints? The definition i like best comes as a story. A school class are being shown round the local parish church. The Vicar is pointing out the various parts of the church and its furnishings. He talks about the altar, the pulpit, and much else besides. Finally he comes to the great east window which is filled with impressions of the apostles and other holy people. it is a bright sunny day and the light is streaming through the window. BEDFORD BULLETIN NOVEMBER 2017 — 19 tells her mother about the visit to the church and says to her: ‘i know who the saints are’. ‘oh, yes’ replies her mother, ‘who are they?’ The girl responds, ‘They are those whom the light shines through’. it is easy to think that the saints are the great and the good holy people down the ages; that the saints are the twelve apostles and others canonised by the church. They are important, not least as compelling examples of faithfulness to god. However, they are not the whole story for god’s saints are all those, living and departed, through whom the light of Christ shines. They are those who are loved by god and know god’s love in their lives. St Paul writing to the church in Rome writes, To all in Rome, who are loved by god and called to be saints. This All Saints’ Day let us celebrate the light in other people, and ask that god’s light may shine through us. across Bedfordshire, as well as the rest of the uK, to teach pupils the story of Anne Frank and her murder in a nazi death camp and demonstrate through Anne’s tragedy how devastating hate directed towards a single group can become. “i decided to fund the charity’s work because hate crime is a problem not just in our county, but nationally. Young people are our future and we pass the baton on to them to change the world – which is why it is so important they learn of Anne Frank and the message to challenge prejudice. “During Hate Crime Awareness Week, members of my office and representatives of Bedfordshire Police were privileged to hear from Eva Clarke, who was born in a concentration camp during World War Two. The camps claimed most of her family and she was never able to meet her father as he was murdered before she was born. Hate crime doesn’t just cause offence, it robs people of the chance of a life away from fear. it is a battle we must win, but we need everyone in Bedfordshire to challenge prejudice all day, every day until we do.

hold a public meeting here, and there was standing room only. Speaker after speaker made excellent contributions on the impact the proposals would have. As for the consultation overall, i know that a very large proportion of the responses were from Bedford, while my petition and that of the Save our Trains group added thousands of voices to the cause. The consultation phase is now over, but i will keep up the pressure on the government as this process continues. Many local people have made big decisions in their lives based on our rail services, such as moving home or changing job. The least they deserve is a fight to save those services. So far, we’ve shown the government that that’s exactly what it’s going to get.

Millennium Country Park is in the Top 10 Parks in the UK

RECoRD-BREAKing 73,349 votes decide the nation’s favourite parks and show how much people #LoveParks. Environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy have announced the People’s Choice ten favourite uK parks, including the Millennium Country Park in Marston Moretaine. This year, they awarded a record-breaking 1,799 green Flag Awards to the best-managed parks and green spaces. To find the best of the best, they asked the public to vote for their favourite parks, which they did in record numbers. The ten winners are spread across England, Scotland and Wales, including large and small sites, traditional parks and wild

unusual spaces. Some of the winners are run by councils, others are managed by community groups and one is a university campus. Head Ranger for the Park, Anna Charles said: “it’s an honour to be in the Top 10 Parks once, let alone six times in a row. A big thank you should go to our team of volunteers who help us maintain the Park with a staff team of only 2.5 rangers! And thank you to everyone who voted for us – we really appreciate it!” international green Flag Award Manager Paul Todd said: “Following the success of this summer’s #LoveParks Week, the record number of votes for the People’s Choice Awards – more than double the number received last year.”

Silver Jubilee Reunion “one big famiy outing”

THE organisers of the Silver Jubilee School reunion were delighted by the popularity of this year’s event, which took place on Saturday 16 September. Committee members Julie Richards-Rankin and Eleanora Valente, aided by Marilyn Foster with Steve Foyle as Treasurer, said it was like one big family meeting up! This was the fourth year running that such an event had been held, and this year it took place at The Meltis Club in Bedford. As well as meeting up with friends and classmates, attendees enjoyed looking through old school photos, sharing food including a celebration cake, and dancing to a disco put on by Meltis. A few ex-pupils travelled from other parts of England and the furthest person came all the way from South Carolina! The success of the event was mainly due to the SJS Facebook group, managed by Julie. Eleanora said: “We hope that next year’s event will be even bigger, as we now have over 1000 expupils in our Facebook group.”

A group of Year 1 and 2 pupils, who are members of the gardening club, harvested their produce and set about preparing and cooking a range

Ruth Wilkes, Principal at Castle newnham can vouch first hand for the great job that they all did: “The soup that the children made was delicious and we all enjoyed it very much. it was a great way to show how we can use some of the vegetables that we have grown in the garden through gardening Club.”

An exciting new chapter is now underway at Castle newnham school. For the first time the school has welcomed Year 9 pupils on its journey to providing all-through schooling from 4 to 16 years old. The school has undergone an extensive improvement programme and building works are almost complete with new classrooms, which include a science lab and a newly refurbished primary block for years 5 and 6. A new drama teaching area, music hub and sports hall will be ready for use over the next few weeks and months. A 3g pitch is planned for the coming year too. A fantastic café area has been made entirely out of up-cycled materials. The school council developed the idea of having a cafe area that they could use to enjoy their lunch in a relaxed and informal setting. By holding regular fund-raising events the pupils were able to fund the development of the area over the summer holidays, using nothing but fully recycled items. NOVEMBER IN THE GARDEN – by Milton Ernest Garden Centre

Berried treasure

N OUR gardens we can surely find some berried treasures. Plants that produce berries in the autumn are so valuable for us and wildlife and autumn is a really good time to plant these in your garden. Some can be grown in tubs but many are better grown in the border or veg patch to achieve maximum crops. The birds will also eat the berries that we find so tasty. If you are growing any soft berry fruits it is vital that you provide some protection. A fruit cage is the ideal solution which allows easy maintenance of the crops and easy picking at harvest. Support this with a ground irrigation system like Drip or Seeper Hose and you will get amazing crops of vitamin rich berries to eat fresh or freeze to use in winter. This initial outlay will pay for itself time and again. For example you should expect at least 0.5 to 1kg of fruit per raspberry cane per year. I have seen raspberries in the supermarkets priced £1.99 for 20 berries! So raspberries are really worth growing. For early and midseason varieties I like Glen Proven and Tulleman and for autumn fruiting Joan J or Autumn Bliss. But wait there’s a new kid on the block, Ruby Beauty is the world’s first compact variety. It is summer fruiting, the canes are short and stout so no need for support wires. It will even grow in a large pot. late summer and autumn. Blueberries are another very productive berry. Trees like Cotoneaster Hybridus Pendula It is recommended that you plant three plants have pillar box red berries and Cotoneaster together to get good pollination and large Exburiensis has bunches of creamy yellow yields. Grow in lime free compost and feed berries. Malus have small orange, red and with ericaceous feed as they like acidic soil. Blueberries grow very well in containers. Chandler and Sunshine Blue are both recommended varieties. Blackcurrants, Ben Sarek and Ben Lomond thornless blackberries, Loch Tay and Karaka Blue are easy to grow and have very heavy yields.

I

Another new introduction is Justaberry. It is a cross between blackcurrant and gooseberry with black shiny sweet fruits the size of gooseberries. Lots of decorative plants produce berries in the autumn and are a great source of winter food for our feathered friends. The flowers that produce the berries are also a great source of pollen and nectar for pollinating insects in

yellow apple like fruits. In the hedge rows we find Hawthorn, Crataegus, and Elderberry, Sambucus but there are more decorative varieties to plant in our gardens. Crataegus Crimson Cloud has bright pink flowers with a white centre and red berries while Sambucus Black Beauty has deep purple foliage, pink flowers and shiny black berries and looks great planted with yellow the foliage of Choisya Sundance. Sorbus Aucuparia, Mountain Ash, has glistening red berries like redcurrants while other varieties like Sorbus Pink Pergola and Sorbus Discolor have pink and cream berries accordingly. Euonymus Red Cascade has very interesting clusters of pinky red fruits which open exposing the

creamy yellow seeds. Morus Niger, the Mulberry Tree has sweet black berries that are enjoyed by us and the birds. It also grows into an interesting gnarled shaped small tree. Pyracantha is a shrub covered in either red orange or yellow berries from September. It makes a very good security hedge or wall shrub. Rosa Moyesii Geranium produces deep red and orange heps which contain the seeds, Hypericum Magical White is a low growing shrub with glistening white berries while Hypericum Rheingold’s are orange pink and red. Callicarpa is another small shrub with amazing light purple berries. Viburnum and Mahonia have blue black berries. Two plants that hold their berries very late into winter are Holly and Ivy. Ilex J. C. Van Tol is a variety of holly that will berry if planted alone. Ivy is a great source of late pollen and nectar and has black berries. So take a look around your garden, find those berried treasures and bury a few more for extra colour in the latter part of the gardening year.

Bad Manners +Max Splodge Bedford Esquires 7.30pm Thurs Nov 30

Bad Manners are returning to Bedford for a night of full on Ska antics, in the VERY intimate setting of Bedford Esquires for a pre Xmas treat! Last year the show sold out on a cold Tuesday night, the time before we had them at Bedford Corn Exchange there were over 800 people skanking in the room. The band quickly became the novelty favourites of the Ska movement through their bald, enormous-bodied frontman’s onstage antics, earning early exposure through their Top of The Pops TV. Bad Manners were at their peak most popular during the late 1970s and early 1980s, during a period when other ska revival bands, such as Madness and The Specials, The Beat and The Selecter, filled the charts. Bad Manners spent 111 weeks in the uK Singles Chart between 1980 and 1983 and have continued as a worldwide popular touring live act to this day. Some of Bad Manners’ more notable hits include “My girl Lollipop”, “Lip up Fatty”, “ne ne na na na na nu nu”, “Lorraine”, “Just A Feeling”, “Walking in The Sunshine”, “Can Can” and “Special Brew”. one of the main reasons for their notoriety was their outlandish hugetongued and shaven-headed frontman, Buster Bloodvessel. His manic exploits got them banned from Top of the Pops.

The Lock In ‘Christmas Carol’ Bedford Corn Exchange 10th December

Featuring The Demon Barbers Half gig, half dance show and half panto! Join the BBC Award Winning team of musicians and dancers for 150% of the very best festive live music, song and dance! it’s Christmas Eve and the regulars of The olde Fighting Cocks are excited about the night ahead, it’s going to be the Folk & Hip Hop dance party of the year! To their dismay the landlady, Jasmineezer Scrooge, has more profitable

ambitions and is preparing to launch her new business, the ‘oompah Techno Bar’! Cheap alco-pops, luminous lighting and mindnumbing bass beats are all in danger of alienating the local community and ruining Christmas! Fortunately, some insightful souls are at hand to lead her back to her senses. Featuring ‘folk powerhouse’ The Demon Barbers; artists from Breaking Tradition Dance Company; a new seasonal repertoire and a ‘slightly unhinged’ approach to their family friendly stage shows, they are ‘guaranteed to raise weary spirits and send an audience home smiling’! Danesborough Chorus

Danesborough Chorus starts its 43rd season with a collection of classics in a joint concert with the Milton Keynes Chorale at Milton Keynes Theatre, on Sunday 19th november at 7.30 pm, when the choirs will perform Brahms’ german Requiem Ein deutsches Requiem. The programme will also include Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden gesellen and grieg’s Peer gynt Suite no 1. “Containing some of the most expressive music in the whole choral repertoire, the Brahms Requiem is an inspiring mix of rich harmonies and flowing tunes” says conductor ian Smith. “it is also unusual in taking its texts from the german Luther Bible as scriptural passages instead of the traditional Latin Mass. The choirs will need their customary vocal stamina, and also an ability to express the gentleness of some of the thought-provoking movements.” Brahms started composing his

german Requiem in 1865, although the final seven-movement work did not have its first performance until 1869 in Leipzig. in contrast to the Roman Catholic Mass which begins with prayers for the dead (“grant them eternal rest, o Lord”), Brahms’ german Requiem focuses on the living, beginning with the text “Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted” from the Beatitudes in St Matthew’s gospel. The concert will be conducted by ian Smith and accompanied by the Milton Keynes City orchestra. The soloists are internationallyacclaimed soprano Carolyn Sampson and leading opera baritone Marcus Farnsworth who will sing Mahler’s beautiful song-cycle Lieder eines fahrenden gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer). The ever-popular Peer gynt Suite no 1 has been used in many TV adverts, from the opening movement, ‘Morning’, to ‘in the Hall of the Mountain King’, which is remembered by many as the Alton Towers theme tune.
