Giant leap forward for Luton as Newlands gets Minister’s thumbs up

A GOVERNMENT minister who approved the decision to grant planning permission for Newlands Park “will never have to buy a drink in Luton again.” by GEOFF COX

That was the offer from campaign group #saveourtown to James Brokenshire, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, after he announced the mixed-use development at m1 Junction 10 would not be called in.

The decision not to submit the scheme for a public inquiry means the major regeneration of the town has taken a significant step closer after Luton Council gave it the green light last month. A letter to the authority confirming the decision from the ministry of Housing Communities and

Local Government on behalf of the Secretary of State said: “The Government is committed to give more power to council and communities to make their own decisions on planning issues and believe planning decisions should be made at the local level wherever possible.” nigel Green, chairman of #saveourtown, said: “We applaud the decision of the Secretary of State as it’s a common sense acknowledgment that Lutonians know what’s best for Luton. “We’ve known for years that newlands Park and Power Court will help revitalise our town while acting also as a catalyst for further improvements. “On two momentous occasions this year our council has recognised the potential of both. Their dedication has been outstanding and has contributed to a sense that our town has come together over this. “For the Secretary of State to give his seal of approval to the hopes and dreams of Luton is another massive vote of confidence for our town. He is welcome in Luton any time and we dare say if he visits he will never have to buy a drink here again.” The option of a judicial review from objectors remains the only potential obstacle in the way of the development moving forward and once con-

structed along with Power Court generating £250million a year for the local economy and 10,000 new jobs. First 2020 Developments Ltd – the property arm of Luton Town Football Club – will need to sign a Section 106 agreement on clauses such as the non-poaching retail arrangements which the Hatters willingly submitted to demonstrate how newlands Park was always designed to be complementary to existing town centre retail. This could take a few weeks, but once that is done a six-week period will begin where any party can lodge a judicial review. This can be applied for at an objector’s expense but only on the grounds that the legal planning process has not been followed correctly. However, it would also cost Luton taxpayers money because as council deputy leader Cllr Sian Timoney posted on Twitter: “LBC would have significant costs defending it and preparing that defence with officers and legal representatives regardless of who launched it.” mr Green added: “Like our football team, Luton is not accustomed to losing. We are on the up in every respect so Lutonians will not take kindly to anyone who continues to selfishly ignore our wishes and the democratic process. “Worse still would be to pursue a crusade of

Voyeur jailed and ordered to sell his home

A mAn who filmed women and girls undressing through the windows of houses has been ordered to sell his property, and will be jailed for two years. John Holloman, 72, of Sandy, was also convicted of possessing indecent images of children and was sentenced on Friday, April 5, 2019, at Luton Crown Court. While living in Slough, Holloman had secretly filmed unsuspecting residents without their consent, and used tape to cover up the recording light on his video camera in order to avoid being spotted.

Holloman, a registered sex offender, was being visited by the police offender management team as part of a spot check when officers discovered the footage on his devices, along with indecent images of children and extreme pornography. DC Paula Harrison, who led the case, said: “The Offender management Unit at Bedfordshire Police is very proactive and we carry out unannounced home visits. “On this occasion we identified that Holloman, a sex offender under management within the

community, had been reoffending, with numerous images on his electronic devices, including those he had admitted filming of women and teenage girls living nearby. Holloman had been remanded into custody since his arrest in January. He was sentenced to a total of 24 months imprisonment and was added to the sex offenders’ register for a further 10 years. In addition, the court made an order that he sell his home and move away within a six-month period of his release.

failure through the courts taking money out of our pockets which would be better spent on vital public services that have been severely hit by funding cuts.” Luton Town FC said of the decision not to call in newlands Park: “After those historic nights at the Town Hall in January and march when the plans for Power Court and newlands Park were passed by the council, we are now another step closer to being able to deliver our new stadium and developments that will help regenerate the town.” And the Hatters’ chief executive, Gary Sweet, added: “This is wonderful news – a giant leap forward for Luton. This is not only a testament to the detail and manner with which Luton Council has painstakingly assessed this application, but proof that both newlands Park and Power Court are absolutely the right plans for Luton at the right time. “While we’re not quite over the line yet, we’re thrilled that the Secretary of State has backed us and the council with this decision. “There is still a lot of work to be done and we know it’s something we’ve asked for in abundance already, but patience is still needed. We thank everyone for the fantastic support we have received so far.”

Meryl Dolling – High Sheriff of Bedfordshire 2019-2020 TO HAve been nominated as High Sheriff for 20192020 is a tremendous honour and I hope that I will have the opportunity to give something back to the county that I love so much. I feel particularly privileged to be the first woman from Luton to serve the county in this role and proud to be only the ninth woman High Sheriff of Bedfordshire in over a thousand years. As a child, I lived and studied in Dunstable until I went to the University of Lancaster. I graduated with a BA (Hons) before moving on to study at King’s College, London for a Post Graduate Certificate in education. I then began my long career in teaching, working first of all in a range of secondary schools and later having completed an m ed. at nottingham University, I went on to teach in Adult and Further education. I moved to Luton to work at Luton Community Relations Council as the Officer responsible for education, employment and training. This deepened my knowledge of and commitment to the “super diverse” linguistic and cultural communities in Luton. During this period, I worked closely with an educational organisation called Special Adult Learning Programmes, which I later joined and became Head of the northern service based in Bedford offering classes for the “disadvantaged” particularly english for Speakers of Other Languages and Basic Skills. I then accepted a similar role as County Co-ordinator for adult basic education for the county of essex for three years before returning to Special Adult Learning Programmes as County Coordinator for Bedfordshire running classes in community venues throughout the county. I specialised in networking and partnerships and was privileged to welcome the Queen to my base at the Westbourne Centre in Bedford to open the new nursery funded through a joint bid with the Queen’s Park Partnership. As the funding from the County Council was reduced, I was responsible for transferring all staff and provision to Barnfield College of Further education. I became Director of the Rotheram Avenue Campus and then the Technology Campus of Barnfield College in Luton while continuing to run the Basic Skills Service across Bedfordshire. In 2003 my husband, michael, became mayor of Luton and as mayoress I spent a hectic but wonderfully rewarding year attending functions and events showcasing the amazing work of hundreds of voluntary and statutory organisations in Luton and beyond. Since my retirement in 2012 I have continued to involve myself in the community as a governor of two schools, a Trustee of Bedford and Luton Community Foundation as well as a member of The Inner Wheel of Luton north. I was also elected as a Councillor for Stopsley Ward at the last local elections and served on Luton Borough Council until I stood down in January this year. Given my background, it is not surprising that in my Shrieval year I will support the judiciary, police and emergency services to help bring communities together as well as emphasising the role that education can play in beating crime. I am really looking forward to the year and want to meet as many charities and organisations as possible to highlight their contribution and impact on the community.

Improvement Fund alone has allocated nearly £2 billion for over 6,000 projects at more than 3,000 schools all over the country. This announcement means the Government has spent £7.4 billion on school buildings since 2015. Alistair said: “I welcome this announcement of Government funding of more than £2 million for school buildings in my constituency. It is targeted at those schools with some of the most urgent need in north east Bedfordshire, helping to ensure that they are in the best condition for children to learn the knowledge and skills they need for the rest of their lives”.

Assault leaves man with bleed on the brain SIx weeks after a man was left with head injuries on a street in Luton, officers are asking the public for help to establish what happened – including any mobile phone footage of the incident. At around 2.15pm on Wednesday February 27, a 43year-old man was found unconscious in Grove Road with head injuries. He was taken to hospital where a scan revealed he had a bleed on the brain. He remains in intensive care in a serious condition. Detective Constable mandy Godfree, investigating, said: “It is six weeks now since the victim was found in the street. He remains in hospital, and he is not well enough to speak to me about the incident. Therefore, I am appealing for help from members of the public.

“I want to find out what happened to our victim. Although our enquiries are ongoing, I am concerned that he was assaulted, and then left in the street with serious injuries by someone who knew what they had inflicted on him, but had no regard for his condition. “We have information to suggest that mobile phone footage of the incident may have been put on social media very briefly before being removed. Therefore, I would like to appeal to anyone who knows they have mobile phone footage of an incident in Grove Road to come forward. Similarly I’d like to ask the public to cast their minds back to six weeks ago – if you were in or around Grove Road that afternoon, do you remember seeing anything suspicious?

Jon Boutcher to stand down as Bedfordshire Chief Constable BeDFORDSHIRe Chief Constable Jon Boutcher has announced he is stepping down after more than five years with the force. He has 35 years’ police service, spending 28 years as a detective with the metropolitan Police. He worked on the Regional and national Crime Squad, targeting serious and organised crime groups with links to international criminal networks. He was also part of the met’s Flying Squad before becoming a leading counter terrorism senior investigating officer dealing with numerous national and international operations. He joined Bedfordshire in 2014 and took over as chief constable the following year. He said: “I have been incredibly fortunate to have had such a wonderful policing career, but being Chief Constable of Bedfordshire has been the highlight – without question. “The force is fantastic and it has been a privilege to be chief constable during this period which has seen us improve across the board. Bedfordshire as a force had previously faced criticism over many years, that is no longer the position. We have gone from being under special scrutiny and supposedly the one of the ‘worst’ performing forces in the country according to Her majesty Inspectorate of Constabulary, to no longer being subject to that additional HmICFRS scrutiny. In fact we now have positive HmICFRS reports, with forces now coming here from all over the country, and indeed overseas, to see the brilliant work we are doing. “One of my proudest achievements is that we are one of the top performing forces when it comes to recruiting from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds. The work we are doing to attract candidates to ensure we are reflective of the communities we serve has been held up as best practice and is something I’m utterly passionate about. Policing is the most incredible profession and it should be ‘open’ to people from all communities, we must represent the people we serve. That is just one example of the super work the force is doing, pushing boundaries, using innovation and striving to provide the very best service possible. “Policing remains hugely underfunded and Bedfordshire Police provides the most profound example of this as a force with the most challenging and complex demands normally only faced by metropolitan forces such as the met, West midlands and the like, and yet the funding gap has still not been addressed. I recognise recent efforts by the current Home Secretary and Policing minister to reverse a long standing lack of police investment however I would remind everyone that it is the first responsibil-

ity of government to protect its citizens, policing must be properly funded. The consequences of previous budgetary decisions are now being felt by all of our communities, this must be addressed. “I have made great friends across all of our communities and I’m hugely grateful for the support from partners and the public and everyone in the force. Bedfordshire has a wonderful mix of cultures, it is county rich in difference and we enjoy the best of relationships between the force and those we are here to serve. I have made lifelong friends, and over the last five years the force has built the strongest of relationships with those we are here to protect. “The officers and staff of Bedfordshire Police do a wonderful job on a daily basis and I’d like to thank each and every one of them for their support during my time here. “I shall certainly be leaving with a heavy heart, but comforted by the knowledge that I’m leaving behind a super talented team who will continue to drive Bedfordshire Police forward.” mr Boutcher will continue leading Operation Kenova, an historic investigation into a number of alleged murders, kidnaps and tortures in northern Ireland. His last working day with the force will be on 5 July, and Police & Crime Commissioner Kathryn Holloway will be responsible for appointing his successor. Commissioner Holloway said: “It’s been a pleasure and a privilege to work shoulder-to-shoulder with the outstanding Jon Boutcher over the last three years. His values are part of the DnA of the force and he leaves a strong legacy. “I believe he will be recognised as an exceptional chief in the history of Bedfordshire Police including his genuine focus on boosting diversity in recruitment. “We enjoy what I believe is the strongest professional relationship of any Chief and PCC - we’ve stood together on funding and challenged criticism of the force. I know that whatever he’s doing, wherever he is in the world, he’ll continue to stand up publicly for Bedfordshire Police. “He has provided exceptional leadership of the force, plus the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Joint Protective Services, and the regional response to organised crime and counter terrorism. “He has established a culture within the force and a personal leadership style where the buck stops with him that I will be looking to when recruiting his replacement - a true leader linked to our communities and committed to community policing.”

Members of organised crime group which targeted cash machines jailed FIVE men involved in an organised crime group which targeted cash machines in Bedfordshire and across the country have been jailed.

It’s believed the group made more than £1,000,000 and caused more than £200,000 worth of damage after they attacked ATms between June 2017 and September 2018.

The group used specialist cutting equipment, stolen from fire stations, to force entry into stores and attack the cash machines. One incident was committed in Bedfordshire in August last year when the gang targeted an ATm at a supermarket in Clapham. The jail sentences were the result of an investigation led by West mercia Police’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit. Detective Chief Inspector Gavin Kinrade, the senior investigating officer, said: “The offenders were part of an organised crime group responsible for a string of ATm attacks across the UK which netted them a considerable amount of cash. The gang were motivated by greed and gave no consideration to the damage and destruction they left behind. “These crimes had a huge impact on the local community with many of the cash machines the group targeted the only source of withdrawing cash for people in the area, some of which haven’t been replaced. not only that the group were prepared to use violence to commit the offences and stole vital specialist life-saving equipment from fire stations with total disregard to the public. “This was a complex and challenging investiga-

tion and I would like to congratulate my team for bringing the matter to a successful conclusion. I would also like to thank colleagues at the other police forces who supported our investigation and assisted in collating evidence.” The group committed their offences in ten police force areas including Bedfordshire, West mercia, Staffordshire, Avon and Somerset, Wiltshire, Hampshire, northamptonshire, Thames valley, Gloucestershire and Derbyshire. The men were sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court after previously pleading guilty to conspiracy to burgle and converting criminal property. Khan also pleaded guilty to possession of criminal property. michael Solomon Stubbs, 32, of Asheridge Close, Wednesfield, has been sentenced to six years eight months. noel Anthony Reilly, 39 of Wychall Lane, Birmingham, has been sentenced to seven and a half years. martin Steadman, 24 of Luce Road, Low Hill, Wolverhampton has been sentenced to seven and a half. mohammed maneer Khan, 31 of Great Hampton Street, Whitmore Reans, Wolverhampton has been sentenced to four years and ten months. marcus Burton, 33 of may Farm Close, Hollywood, Birmingham, has been sentenced to five years and ten months. Serious Crime Prevention orders were also granted against Steadman, Stubbs, Reilly and Burton. These will place a number of restrictions on the defendants when they are released from prison and are designed to protect the public.

Between 21 november 2018 and 24 January 2019, Ahmed broke into seven different properties throughout Luton and stole a number of items, including jewellery, cash, bank cards, ID cards, passports, laptops, and electronic gadgets. Tilsworth man’s bonfires burn a hole in his pocket A mAn from Tilsworth has been ordered to pay fines of over £2,300 this month, after he repeatedly lit bonfires despite being served with a legal notice to stop. Following complaints from neighbouring residents, we investigated and served an abatement notice on mr John Price of Dunstable Road in Tilsworth. An abatement notice is a legal document that requires someone to stop what they are doing if the council consider it a nuisance. This was issued in July 2018.

However, mr Price ignored this and continued to regularly light bonfires: even in the lead up to his court case, he was still seen lighting bonfires on 20 separate occasions. mr Price who failed to attend Luton magistrates’ Court on march 26, was found guilty in his absence and was ordered to pay costs of £2,337. WHen the sun shines in Bedford it really enhances the natural beauty, the river and history that the town has to offer. It puts us all in a better mood and heightens the desire to spend time out and about.

With the schools on easter holiday this month, what better reason than to come into town for a spot of shopping in the newly refurbished Harpur Centre or one of the arcades, grab a bite to eat at one of the great cafes and restaurants, or perhaps even watch a show! Lets start a fantastic weekend with a Take That tribute band on the 5th April or perhaps you would prefer the sounds of the Bedford Town Band celebrating 125 years on the 6th April, both at the Corn Exchange. Also on the eve of the 6th there is a Pop-Up Bistro: American BBQ at Roosters Sandwich Bar on St Cuthberts. Pre booking is essential. Make an evening of it and visit the new Blue Glass wine bar on St Peters Street or a cocktail or two from Bears & Tales. Sunday 7th, made in Bedford is holding its Spring Artisan Fair in the Harpur Suite/Corn exchange.

enjoy a great selection of local sellers with handmade arts and crafts. Perhaps you are or know a motorbike fan as also on this day is Boyds of Bedford’s first bike meet outside La Piazza from 1pm-4pm. All welcome! Treat the children on Monday 8th and bring the kids to the Easter pantomime show of Beauty and the Beast, matinee and evening performances available to book at the Corn Exchange. Also being held here from 10am-6pm on Tuesday 9th is a free day of fun filled music making for young musicians so bring the kids along. For the arty, crafty ones amongst us the Higgins are hosting activity workshops inspired by their new ‘Round and Round the Garden’ exhibition. From the 9th-11th and 16th-18th there are three sessions a day and are aimed at 5-13 year olds. The Record Store Day at Slide Records this year is on 13th April in The Arcade so music lovers be sure to head along for some tunes on vinyl. And for the sweet tooth fans amongst us and more particularly vegan fans, Treat Street is hosting its bi weekly Vegan Day on 16thApril so

make sure you find the time to grab a sumptuous Vegan Dessert!

Back at the Corn exchange on Thursday 18th is another treat for the little ones. You are invited to marty macdonalds farm for Pongo’s Birthday Party. Tickets are available online or in the box office. Then of course it is the big bank holiday weekend of CHOCOLATE EATING! Easter eggs are aplenty in town but if you head to Arcadia sweet shop for the more unique offering of chocolate truffles, fudge and bespoke chocolate/sweetie trees.

During the holidays from Saturday 6th to monday 22nd April Love Bedford along with mini mapmakers are running an easter Trail. There are a number of collection points for the form and then clues to be found. Once completed forms can be handed in to Arcadia Sweet shop where a treat awaits! The Love Bedford team wish you a very Happy Easter and remember to visit www.lovebedford.co.uk for all the news and events in town. Thousands of school children get dramatic reminder of dangers posed by gang exploitation county lines drug dealing and other forms of criminal exploitation. Performances started last month and have so far reached between 1,500 and 2,000 school children every week. Around 15,000 children are expected to see the play by the time the run finishes in may. each 40 minute show is followed by a workshop helping the students understand what a healthy relationship looks like, how the grooming process works and who to speak to for support.

Don’t be distracted — just drive THAT’S the message from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit (RPU) in support of a national Police Chief’s Council (nPCC) campaign targeting those who use a mobile phone whilst driving. Sergeant Ian manley from the BCH RPU said: “There are serious and sometimes fatal consequences of using your phone whilst behind the wheel. I would ask all drivers: is it really worth it? The answer is of course no so please turn your phone off, on do not disturb or put it where you won’t be distracted by it or be tempted to pick it up.” more than 1,500 people were caught using their mobile phone across Beds, Cambs and Herts in 2018: l 371 in Bedfordshire l 483 in Cambridgeshire l 717 in Hertfordshire 81 per cent of those dealt with were men. In Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire, they were mainly aged between 22 and 36 years old, whilst in Hertfordshire the age band was 27 – 41 years old.

Sergeant manley continued: “You are putting yourselves and other road users in serious danger if you use a mobile whilst driving. It takes just moments for a collision to occur if you are distracted so don’t be, just drive.”

If you’re caught using a handheld device whilst driving or riding you will get an automatic Fixed Penalty notice which means six points on your licence and a fine of £200. Your case could also go to court and you could be disqualified from driving or riding and get a maximum fine of £1,000 (£2,500 if you’re driving a lorry or bus). If you passed your driving test in the last two years, you’ll lose your licence. In some circumstances, for example if use of a phone has caused or contributed to an accident, the police may prosecute for driving without due care or dangerous driving in order to secure a more severe punishment.

Penalties

Commissioner Holloway said: “We made sure that the theatre company worked with young people from Bedfordshire who’ve been caught up in knife carrying and gang membership themselves to make sure that it sounds as authentic as possible. “There’s no point whatever in softening the reality or the message will be lost and I’m perfectly prepared for complaints if those watching the production never forget it. This isn’t some sort of poor Theatre in education production. It’s the closest we can get to the dangers presented by those running county lines and recruiting children to do their dirty work for them. “Drugs are the driving force behind so much crime. From rival drugs gangs violently clashing over territory, burglars stealing to fund their addictions, or organised crime groups funding their criminal enterprises and exploitation – drugs underpin this criminality, which will not be

3

tolerated in Bedfordshire. “The fact that county lines drugs gangs are targeting children who aren’t even in their teens makes it all the more hideous. Hopefully by speaking directly to these children, Alter ego can educate them about the reality of gang life and help them recognise how they might be subject to exploitation.” Last week more than 100 people attended an information evening organised by Bedfordshire Police, The Seeds of Change and CYP First around the issue of county lines and the criminal exploitation of children. Richard Denton, children and young people development officer at Bedfordshire Police, said: “We are very pleased to be working with Alter ego, as theatre is such a powerful way to raise awareness around child criminal exploitation (CCe). “We want to get the message across and warn young people of the dangers of how they can be targeted by organised groups and

gangs to groom, trick, trap and manipulate them into trafficking drugs and sometimes weapons. We will have an officer at each production to answer any questions, as well as deal with any concerns pupils, parents or teachers may have. “We know that county lines drug dealing is intertwined with other criminal activity such as serious violence, child sexual exploitation and modern slavery. That’s why it is so important we continue to raise awareness and educate people about these dangers.” As well as performances for young students, Alter ego also offers plays suitable for parents and professionals who work with children. Lynne Goodwin, from Alter ego Creative Solutions, added: “We have worked with other forces and are delighted to come to Bedfordshire to show our educational play, which is based around how these gang members

are master manipulators. “They start by offering young people money, drugs and making them feel important and part of something in a world where they’re feeling disenfranchised. They will make it appear their life is exciting and do whatever it takes to get young people to work for them, before they turn their lives upside down saying they owe them money and threaten violence and blackmail to make them deal drugs and move packages. “They’ll do whatever it takes to keep them working for them. The youngsters are terrified, but trapped in a world they feel unable to get out of. For adult audiences, the play raises awareness of the warning signs of CCe and the coercive process young people may have been through that has resulted in them being criminally exploited – a process that can all too easily make it seem as though they have ‘made their own choices.’”

STRAWBERRIES

THOUSAnDS of school children across Bedfordshire are getting a dramatic reminder about the dangers of exploitation by criminal gangs thanks to a new theatre production in schools. Alter ego Creative Solutions is performing the play at schools across the county thanks to funding from Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner Kathryn Holloway. Titled ‘County Lines’, the production charts the risks children and young people face from criminal gangs, such as

The Brand New Heavies with support from DJs ‘Brother’ Louie Martin and Mark Russell Bedford Corn Exchange Friday 31st May 2019

Pioneers of the London Acid Jazz scene, The Brand new Heavies, are a British music institution whose unique mix of jazz, funk and soul has lit up the UK music scene for well over two decades. Over the years The Brand new Heavies have been responsible for some of the UK’s biggest R & B/ soul tracks, scoring 16 top 40 singles including ‘Dream On Dreamer’ and ‘You’ve Got A Friend’, as well as over two million album sales. It was old school friends Jan, Andrew and Simon pursuing their nearobsessive love of soul music and ‘70s funk that inspired them to form The Brand new Heavies.

early hits ‘never Stop and ‘Dream Come True’ were original chunks of organic funk that earned the band a reputation as a formidable live act and their reinterpretations of popular standards, such as ‘midnight At The Oasis’, Carole King’s ‘You’ve Got A Friend ‘and the Stevie Wonder classic ‘I Don’t Know Why (I Love You)’, brought major global chart success. Having made their mark originally with the immensely talented vocalist n’Dea Davenport, the core trio of Jan Kincaid, Simon Bartholomew and Andrew Levy were later fronted by Siedah Garrett and Carleen Anderson.

The Brand new Heavies have been ploughing their own furrow the British music scene for over a quarter of a century and are respected the world over.

“It’s fantastic to be bringing such great talent to play in Bedford, which has a thriving music scene. Brand new Heavies are incredible live, they have infectious energy and get everyone up for a guaranteed non stop party. This is a band that deliver every time and I am so excited to have booked them for Bedford.” Said mark Harrison, Promoter, LPH Concerts See them live at Bedford Corn exchange in may! The Christians Bedford Esquires, Friday 19th April

Did you know Bedfordshire’s medieval vineyard is now an exci ng community project? This beau ful eld near Old Warden was rst planted by monks at Warden Abbey. Centuries later, the “Ly el Vineyard” was re-planted and now produces award-winning wines. Today, it’s an army of volunteers who tend the vines all year round as well as run tours, school visits, social & therapeu c hor culture, wildlife and heritage projects.

Local . Ethical . Award-winning

Renowned for an endless string of soulful yet socially aware hits ... Forgotten Town, Ideal World, Born Again, Harvest for the World, What’s in a Word, Hooverville, Words, Father, The Bottle and many more The Christians enjoyed huge acclaim in the late 80s and early 90s both in the UK and europe and often confused people with their band name (in fact just the brothers surname with absolutely no religious connotation!) Still headed by enigmatic lead singer Garry Christian (who very much deserves the Daily mirror’s description of him as having ‘one of the finest voices in pop) who has only gained in vocal stature (and wit) over the years! the band are enjoying a revival currently touring successfully in the UK and europe. Camden Town artist Charles Ginner painted his own suburban garden, whilst Lucian

Freud and Graham Sutherland travelled further afield to paint continental gardens and exotic plants. There will also be a sensory installation in the gallery created by the Theatre of Widdershins with The Wynding Wixam Tree, a sculptural piece by local puppet maker and storyteller, Andy Lawrence. Alongside the exhibition there will be garden-themed events including garden tours, plant sales, a British Sign Language tour and workshop with Access Bedford, lunchtime lectures, easter and may Half-Term holiday activities and more. sport FOOTBALL – HATTERS

Table topping town show their mettle LUTON TOWN ........................(1) 2 BLACKPOOL ..........................(1) 2 by Mark Wood

Waders suffer injury time disaster – again

A BATTLE Royale saw ten-man Town battle back to claim an invaluable 2-2 home draw against Blackpool at Kenilworth Road on Saturday.

This gutsy draw spoke volumes about table-topping Luton as substitute Jason Cummings’ late leveller saw the Hatters set a record unbeaten ‘league’ run of 28 matches and with it a new League One record.

Leading scorer James Collins had given Luton the lead before two moments of madness in the second half saw him dismissed as Town stared a first league defeat since October in the face after nya Kirby and matty virtue had scored to turn the tables for visiting Blackpool. Tenacious Town showed their mettle though, and dominated with 10 men, before deservedly levelling with four minutes to go and almost grabbed victory in the sixth minute of stoppage time only for sub George moncur to be denied by keeper Christoffer mafoumbi. Town dominated long periods of the first half and took the lead after just six minutes with the first effort of the match. Kazenga LuaLua turned brilliantly on the left as he skinned his man and crossed for Collins to stroke home left-footed from close range.

Dominant Luton continued to press as matty Pearson saw his header blocked from James Justin’s fine in-swinging corner before Town went close twice in quick succession midway through the half. A half-cleared Justin corner fell to Luke Berry whose effort was blocked before Andrew Shinnie skipped into the box and his powerful low effort was deflected away. The Hatters paid a heavy price for not netting a second as the Tangerines levelled on the half hour. James Shea was drawn from his line as virtue broke on to a ball forward and crossed intelligently to the edge of the area for Kirby to superbly volley home with the keeper unable to recover. Blackpool proceeded to come into the game more as calls for a foul on elliot Lee in the box went unanswered. A dangerous marc Bola break was forced behind before Town almost snatched the lead in injury time when Pearson arrowed in a cross-shot from the flank which mafoumbi was only just able to turn over the bar. The Tangerines were a different team at the start of the second half and should have taken the lead four minutes in as Liam Feeney’s great cross

picked out the dangerous Armand Gnanduillet and his flick header was superbly saved by Shea. Strangely haphazard defending from the Hatters often put them in trouble as another Gnanduillet header had to be hacked away by Sonny Bradley. Lively full-back Bola again burst into the box but appeared to dive with three men in close attention as appeals for a penalty were waved away. A breathless half saw Justin’s dangerous free-kick fall to Shinnie whose effort was deflected over after Bradley appeared to be pulled down and Collins then swept well over the bar from a corner. The game then lurched Blackpool’s way as Collins was stupidly booked for kicking the ball away before lunging in on virtue as he was dismissed on the hour.

Two minutes later and Blackpool were ahead as Shea came for a corner and didn’t get it and, as the ball broke loose, virtue lashed into the top corner. With their backs to the wall, Town showed real character as they proceeded to boss the rest of the game. Lee miskicked wastefully after good work by moncur and Pearson then showed great movement as he flicked a header wide from a Justin corner. Wave-after-wave of Luton attacks followed, but Blackpool should have put the game to bed on 71 minutes when Pearson was taken out off the ball and, attacking with numbers, the ball fell to Gnanduillet whose effort was deflected behind. A nervy finish saw moncur skirt the edge of the area and smash a swerving effort just wide,

TOP CORNER

Jason Cummings

Shinnie fire over from range and moncur break on to a loose pass only to pick the wrong pass at the vital moment before Town deservedly levelled with four minutes to go. The impressive Pelly-Ruddock mpanzu thrust forward and found Cummings on the edge of the box, who took a neat touch, before cleverly curling it into the bottom corner with his left foot. At the death, sub Harry Cornick raced clear and found the onrushing moncur, only for mafoumbi to save well at his feet and deny the Hatters’ braves a famous victory as their spent players were left strewn and exhausted all over the pitch at the final whistle.

THE Waders worked really hard to atone for early errors. Getting their noses in front on 85. looking seriously to take the points, when disaster struck on 91, yet again.

As a contest the first 25 didn’t exist, Biggleswade well able to contain Redditch without creating too much danger of troubling the keeper. matt Ball was at his best intercepting and running forward but without a final ball into the danger zone. On 26 a harmless, speculative cross/shot from Leam Howards caught the outstretched leg of Jordan Gent, diverted into his own net. The only real attack Redditch had had at that stage. The Waders intent on going in at least on level terms scored on 42, a shot from the effervescent Liam Brooks through a crowd of players. At the break all square and expectation from the visiting support. Kicking up the slope suited the Waders and chances were beginning to come the green way. Yet another disaster on 52 as an innocuous free kick from Josh Hawker slipped through the hands of Sam Donkin to put the Waders in deficit for a second time. Sleeves up time and a belief that the three points were for the taking. Sam Donkin lifted a free kick into the area where Gent a header glanced the ball to Brooks who made no mistake as he ran the ball in on 74. now boys and it came through the tricky Sean Lucien as he wended his way through to unleash a shot from an impossible angle to give the Waders a lead on 85. With five to go plus, memories of last week fresh in the mind, surely this time? But alas as Redditch piled forward, a series of corners were cleared before a deeper ball into the box found Harry Franlin with a power header to break the Wader’s hearts. In the time allowed Biggleswade perhaps trying too hard could not get the important decider. Next up away at Bedworth, Saturday 13th kick off 1500 hours.
