NEWLANDS WILL BE A POSITIVE STEP TOWARDS REGENERATION BEDFORDSHIRE ONLINE EDITION

by GEOFF COX

Luton town FC and 2020 Developments were cautiously delighted by thursday’s news that Luton Council’s planning officer’s report has given a positive recommendation for consent for plans to build a mixed-use development at newlands Park. the club said in a statement: “this is great news, of course, but it must be stressed that it is only encouraging at this stage as we prepare  for  the  second  leg  of  the  council  planning  committee meeting double header on Monday, March 11.

“at that point, the planning committee will hear comments from both sides before reaching a local resolution on the application for the development that will serve as a gateway to the town, improving the perception and standing of Luton across the country and internationally. “newlands Park is crucial commercially for our new stadium in the town centre – for which we were historically granted approval in January – to be built at Power Court. “the two sets of plans were submitted in august 2016, but our enthusiasm and commitment for both schemes has never wavered and we are clear in the opinion that newlands Park can make a tremendous positive

contribution to the town’s vitality and local economy, both in real terms with thousands of new jobs created and also in the way it generates many millions of pounds each year for the borough. “We are, of course, delighted to have got this far and thank everyone for their support and patience. this will continue to be needed as there is a lot of work still to do even if the committee approve plans, as we will still have to wait some time before we discover whether the secretary of state will call the newlands Park project in or if it has to go to a judicial review. “But for now, as we look forward to some exciting fixtures both on and off the pitch, let’s reflect on how much positive hope about our future we can have as hatters.” * the council planning officer’s recommendation to approve newlands Park is “another big step along the way” to the regeneration of Luton, said #saveourtown.   newlands Park has been fiercely opposed by Capital & Regional, the owners of the Mall shopping centre in Luton, which has extended the planning process for two-and-a-half years. But  the  news  of  the  planning  officer’s  report  is  a  big  boost  for thousands of Lutonians who do support the project.  nigel green (pictured above whilst being interviewed on BBC Look East),  chairman  of  #saveourtown,  said:  “this  is  absolutely  excellent news, but to put it into context it’s just another step along the path.  “We’re  not  there  yet  because  the  planning  development  control

committee haven’t met yet, but it is another big step along the way and it’s good news. there are no guarantees, but it would be highly unusual if it was turned down. “this is not just about football. this is about the redevelopment of our town which is sadly in need of regeneration. this opportunity has been presented to the council. it’s a golden opportunity, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and it will turn the town around.  “Property prices are rising here, developers are building flats as fast as they can, the airport is growing and there’s a new daRt link being built from Parkway station up to the airport. Luton is on the way up and this is going to be a great place to live.  “the town is going to look fantastic and it will be a fantastic place to live, work and play. it is the missing link. it will come in and this will be a great place. i can’t wait for all of this to get up and running.”   the meeting on March 11 will take place at Luton town hall from 4pm, but the council has urged people to watch online via its live stream, which proved so successful during the Power Court hearing. the council said: “We appreciate there is significant public interest in the  application.  For  this  reason  we  have  partnered  with  BBC  three Counties to provide a live stream so people can watch the meeting online as it is happening.” the council has also published a webpage with useful information about  the  newlands  Park  meeting,  including  how  to  watch  it  and frequently asked questions.

ENTHUSING CHILDREN WITH THE NEW DEVELOPMENTS by GEOFF COX

thE excitement shown by children over regeneration plans for Luton proves that the town is moving in the right direction, says campaign group #saveourtown.

sessions have taken place at Warden hill Juniors and dallow Primary following the recent launch event at st Margaret’s of scotland Primary. and #saveourtown will be holding assemblies with other schools even beyond Monday’s crucial decision date at the Luton town hall when councillors on the development control committee will decide whether to give the go-ahead to newlands Park, the second of two applications by 2020 developments, the property arm of Luton town Football Club. a planning officer’s report has already recommended the application for approval and should councillors follow that it will mean the green light pending any potential challenges for a mixed-use development containing offices, leisure and high-end retail. it is the crucial piece in the town centre regeneration jigsaw after planning permission was granted for Power Court in January as much of the funding for that site will be generated by newlands Park, which among other things aims to keep more Luton spend in the town. it means that despite planning permission for a 17,500-seat stadium for Luton town FC, an 1,800capacity music venue and more, delivering them hinges on Monday’s decision. #saveourtown, who have been raising awareness of the two schemes that will also provide £250million a year for the local economy and 10,000 new jobs, are continuing their #doitFortheKids campaign ensuring as many young people as possible know how Luton will change and grow as they do. Chairman nigel green said: “We regard this programme of our campaign work as one of the most crucial. We all want a bright new future for Luton, but young people are the ones who stand to benefit or suffer the most from Monday’s monumental decision at the town hall. “over the last week it has been fantastic engaging with both the children and staff at Warden hill Junior school as well as at dallow Primary school. “the pupils at both schools were hugely excited by the plans for both Power Court and newlands Park, with several children commenting on how they wouldn’t need to travel to other towns any more to find fun things to do. “the children were also enthralled by the artwork that has begun appearing at Power Court as part of our Power in Paint initiative with aimi Rix of Little Red Creative studios, which is Europe’s single largest urban street art project. it shows the town is moving in the right direction. “While Monday’s decision is so important for the future of our town our work will not stop once a verdict is delivered and we are visiting several other schools over the next few weeks, hopefully to tell them about the most positive news for Luton in generations. “if you would like us to come and visit your school please get in touch at  saveourtownluton@hotmail.com.” the #doitFortheKids campaign has already seen pupils from hillborough Junior school create powerful videos and enjoy an audience with Luton Council leader Cllr hazel simmons.  on Friday, children from hillborough Juniors linked up with the UK Centre for Carnival arts to celebrate Luton Carnival, the Power in Paint project and last week’s report recommending newlands Park for approval.

#saveourtown blocked on Twitter by Mall’s owners by GEOFF COX

CaPitaL & REgionaL, owners of the Mall shopping centre in Luton, have been accused by Lutonians of being “backwards thinking” and “acting like toddlers”. the attack came after C&R blocked a stream of individuals and local organisations, including #saveourtown, from interacting with them on twitter. the volunteer-run campaign group, which has been raising awareness of the once-in-lifetime opportunities presented by the Power Court and newlands Park regeneration schemes, discovered on Friday evening that the major opposers to the latter had censored them. #saveourtown says this means that C&R, who have long claimed to be acting in the interests of the community they serve while opposing the newlands Park planning application, have opted to ignore the views of thousands of customers. #saveourtown posted on twitter: ‘Would you look at that! they’ve blocked us. Just goes to show that whatever they’ve said they don’t care about the views of Lutonians.” it came 24 hours after a Luton Borough Council planning officer’s report recommended that councillors approve newlands Park when it goes before the development control committee on Monday, March 11. in response to C&R’s actions, Lutonians took to twitter in protest. @lee_archer wrote: “so you claim to have the interest of #Luton at heart and then block @saveourtownltn and others. interesting move just before the council’s decision. i assume it’s so you don’t have to see all the victorious tweets once the right decision is made.” @Matt_J_harrison said: “Could someone @CapRegPLC come on and explain why they’ve blocked @saveourtownltn. seems like they feel threatened by a volunteer group who are putting the interest of Luton at heart.” @MummyVsWork wrote: “such a shame they can’t engage in

ARSON AWARENESS WEEK – MARCH 18-24

50% of all fires have devastating effects BEdFoRdshiRE Fire and Rescue service are calling on everyone to play their part in tackling fire-crime.  “arson accounts for almost half of all fires attended by the fire and rescue services and can have devastating effects in terms of its cost and consequences,” says andy Martin, Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue service’s arson Reduction officer.  andy added “arson is a significant drain on our resources and can put lives in danger, destroy buildings and be devastating.  if you see anyone setting a fire deliberately, ‘don’t accept it, report it’”. Use 999 for the Fire service if lives or property are at risk. if not call the Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. insurers report that arson costs over £1bn in fire-related claims across the UK each year. damage to property, business interruption and other inconvenience caused by arson is significant.  deliberate fires cost a vast amount of money, but also endanger life, with a significant number of lives lost as a result.  in the year ending september 2018 55 people died in the UK in fires that were started deliberately.   in Bedfordshire arson incidents fell by

nearly 4% between 2016 and 2018. there were 746 cases of arson in 2018, down from 774 in 2016. the majority of arson attacks were against outdoor structures and road vehicles (666 in 2018) with arson against buildings and dwelling only accounted for 80 incidents in 2018.  andy says: “you can reduce the chances of your home, business or other property becoming a target for an arsonist by following some simple guidelines.”  only put rubbish out on the designated collection day and keep bins away from the walls of your property, ideally in a secure environment. Fly tipping is great fuel for arsonists – so always dispose of your rubbish responsibly and make arrangements for combustible materials to be taken to a tip by a trustworthy source and don’t leave any in front of your property. don’t let rubbish build up outside your property or allow bins to become too full and don’t put skips close to your property, arrange for them to be emptied or removed before they become too full. you should contact your local council about disposal of bulky items.  schools are often the target for arson and fires not only damage the buildings but

disturb the education of all those attending and that divert resources to rebuilding the property and not teaching the pupils. if you have information about arson at a school please report it. derelict and unused buildings and buildings under construction or renovation are often subject to arson, criminal damage and theft.  such buildings are seen as an easy target by offenders during the times when they are insecure and unoccupied. But not

only can they be of significant value but also pose a risk to those neighbouring the property. if you see anyone acting suspiciously around a derelict building contact the police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. For more advice on arson prevention and reduction please see the arson reduction pages on our website www.bedsfire.gov.uk and then go into’ Community safety’ and then into ‘arson’ and select the relevant area.

40th Anniversary of the fire at Bedford School – the school that never closed

on sunday 3 March Bedford school commemorated the 40th anniversary of the horrific fire that devastated its Main Building, leaving nothing but a charred, smoking shell in its wake. the heart of the school stood strong, however, and many positives arose from it. saturday 3 March 1979 began like any other saturday. there was a morning of lessons, followed by a play rehearsal. at around 7.00pm, the heavy, velvet curtains of the main hall were drawn as approximately 100 boys gathered to watch a film. after the film ended, the great hall was tidied ready for school on Monday. the head Porter locked the school up at around 10.00pm as usual. at around 11.30pm two boarders returned from a dance at dame alice harpur school – this was to be the last time Bedford school was seen before the dramatic events of the night unfolded. at precisely 11.58pm, the Post office emergency switchboard received the first of 36 calls to report a fire at Bedford school. the caller, calling from a telephone box on Kimbolton Road, told the operator that he thought that Bedford school Chapel was on fire with “whopping great flames coming out of the roof and lots of smoke”. the Fire Brigade received notification of the fire one minute after midnight at their headquarters in Kempston. they contacted the Barker’s Lane Fire station where sub officer Pat Wheeler immediately deployed two fire engines in the direction of Bedford school. sub officer Wheeler told us: “as we drove along the Embankment, we could already see the flames, which must have been 30 to 40 feet higher than the roof, and there was a glow in the sky.” he later recalled that a fire engine coming a while later from Luton could see the fire clearly from the hill above Barton-le-Clay. Meanwhile, the fire grew and spread with exceptional and extraordinary ferocity. Local resident, Jean Brown, who witnessed the fire at this time, said: “We could see all the sparks go up and it was just the most amazing fire, we couldn’t believe our eyes and it was crackling. as the fire got going on the roof timbers, great piles of slates dropped down so you could hear the crashing and banging. then suddenly the bell tower keeled right over and flopped down.” as sub officer Wheeler and his crew approached Bedford school, he saw at once that the situation was desperate and radioed the base to request immediate assistance. he then directed two water jets, but with the height and grip of the flames this was pitifully inadequate, so he confined himself to a single hose in order to get more pressure. it was Fire officer steve spring who had the job of climbing to the top of the fully-extended, 100 ft ladder with that hose. Recalling the moment, officer spring said: “once i got to the top, i was faced with probably one of the most frightening scenes i have ever experienced.” the flames were licking way up into the sky and the wind caused timber and debris to swirl all around him. it was at this point, a mere seven minutes after arrival, that sub officer Wheeler sent a radio request for the police to evacuate the houses in glebe Road (adjacent to the school) – a shrewd assessment of the situation. Fire-fighting reinforcements continued to arrive until all 13 fire stations in the county were contributing with a total of 18 fire engines. the fire at its height was inextinguishable. the 400 gallons of water in the fire vehicles were not enough. their thirsty pumps even sought the

supplies of the school’s open-air swimming pool, but that too was soon exhausted. since the flames were deemed uncontrollable, the fire brigade’s efforts concentrated on containing the fire and preventing it from spreading. Meanwhile the flames continued to develop with horrifying speed and violence, devouring the building and showering sparks into the air like a spectacular, yet macabre, firework display. Eye witness and local resident, Chris Brown, recalls that one of his resounding memories of the night was: “seeing the head Master, ian Jones, going into his study by the side door several times, dragging filing cabinets onto the grass while the fire raged above him”. it was later learnt that his priority was to secure all the documents relating to the boys. a sizeable crowd soon gathered. amongst those present was the arsonist who started the fire. he later admitted that he had cheered at the moment the tower fell. the fire continued to burn through the night with ever decreasing vigour, and as it did so it relinquished some of its spell on the spectators who slowly began to drift away. it was at around 5.00am that the last of the watchers left, leaving just the fire-fighters to continue with their unenviable task. speculation was rife about what might happen in the next few days, weeks and months. With 30 classrooms and over 90% of the school destroyed, how could the school possibly continue? there was no question in the head Master’s mind that the school would even consider closing or that boys would be sent home. the thought simply did not cross his mind, and he immediately set about finding 30 temporary classrooms. the resilience and organisation demonstrated were quite remarkable. the boys did not miss any lessons whatsoever. By Monday morning the 30 temporary classrooms were in situ and off the boys went to their lessons. a notice placed at the various entrances to the school read, “Bedford school – normal school on Monday March 5th at 9.00am”. in the head Master’s address to the school on that day, he said: “We must remember though that life is also about people, and fortunately this school has a very fine staff and a first rate set of boys, and together we must all set about the task of dealing with the problems that have been created for us. our first priorities have been to ensure school continues. “We want people to say of masters and boys and everyone at Bedford that they have big hearts. so aim for the sky in your work, in your games, your music, your drama, and all your other school activities. hold your heads up high both inside and outside the school, during term and in the holidays, so we can look back on this darkest of hours and we can be justifiably proud of our efforts.” amazingly, the school continued to function entirely as normal until the restored main building was unveiled in the autumn of 1981. the stoicism, tenacity and resilient characteristics are deep rooted in the school’s character and ethos. the way the community supported one another in the aftermath of the fire is a proud reminder of this and leaves a legacy which is everpresent today.

World-class art win for Ellie

Over 2,000 Girlguiding Bedfordshire members celebrate World Thinking Day

aCRoss Bedfordshire Rainbows, Brownies and guides have celebrated World thinking day. Celebrated since 1926, World thinking day, is a day of international friendship, speaking out on issues that affect girls and young women, and fundraising for ten million girl guides and girl scouts around the world. over 2,000 girls and leaders from across Bedfordshire attended celebrations across the county which saw the girls taking part in lots of fun activities focussed on taking an adventure through time. there was also time to rededicate their

Few 17-year-olds can boast that their work has been included in an exhibit attached to the victoria and albert Museum, the world’s leading museum of art and design, but ellie Scorer of Clapham can do just that. the former Sharnbrook School student is now taking graphics, Photography, Media and english Literature a Levels at the bedford Sixth Form - and via her art class has won first prize in a competition which will see her design work all over London. via teacher nikki Mansell, ellie and classmates entered the challenge run by tRaiD, a clothes recycling charity, to design a “wrap” for their bins across the capital. “i couldn’t believe when my name was read

out,” said ellie, “i can’t wait to see the finished item which is now going into production.” ellie beat entries from more than 13 schools across London. there are plans for her work to be unveiled at the v & a in the coming months. Said teacher nikki: “ we entered the graphics gathering competition which the v & a hosts every year. we are looking forward to seeing the finished article.” want to know more about upgrading your career opportunities in the world of art and design? visit https://www.bedfordsixthform.ac.uk www.vam.ac.uk www.traid.org.uk

Luton drive-by shooting: three men jailed thREE men from Luton have been jailed for their involvement in a drive-by shooting in august last year. Kevin Raveendrakumar, 19, of Lamorna Close, was sentenced to three years and Fahied ali, 18, of Linden Road, was sentenced to seven years at Luton Crown Court on thursday, February 21, 2019. Reanae Charlery, 21, of st Vincent gardens, was jailed for four years and three months on Wednesday, March 6, 2019. at around 6.30pm on 1 august 2018, our Force Contact Centre received a number of calls reporting disorder in hockwell Ring, including that shots had been fired and a car was chasing someone on a bicycle. it later transpired that a skoda Fabia had pulled up alongside Charlery, who was on a bicycle. he was chased by someone who had got out of the car, reportedly with a knife. having got away, a few minutes later the same skoda Fabia drove past Charlery, now outside a house in hockwell Ring, with the passenger window open. two shots were fired from the vehicle, with plumes of smoke seen coming from it on CCtV. Charlery then produced a gun and pointed it at the passing car, but it wasn’t fired. one of the callers reporting the incident gave a partial registration number of the car involved, which was then put through police systems. the car was found to have been approximately 1.2km from where Charlerey was chased, around 30 minutes before police received reports of disorder. an image of the car was circulated among our officers, where the driver and front seat passenger were clearly visible. an officer was able to identify the driver as Raveendrakumar, and the passenger as ali. officers were despatched to search the area, and when the car was seen at Raveendrakumar’s home address, he was arrested. ali was also arrested. CCtV enquiries were also able to positively identify Charlery. he was captured on CCtV outside the parade of shops in hockwell Ring just prior to the initial reports of disorder and identified by one of our PCsos. taking into account his direction of travel, officers were able to match his clothing to that of the man brandishing the firearm in hockwell Ring shortly afterwards. detective superintendent Liz Mead said: “Charlery, Raveendrakumar and ali appeared to be involved in a dispute, with Charlery being in an opposing gang to Raveendrakumar and ali.

“With this incident taking place in broad daylight, these three individuals clearly had no regard for the safety of the public, which is incredibly concerning. “the force’s Boson team, who investigated this incident, is dedicated to tackling gang and gun criminality, and will continue to tackle those involved in this style of offending. We will work as hard as we can to stop people who use fear and intimidation in our communities. “this incident was seemingly planned, with guns being carried to either be used as intimidation or to cause serious harm. Carrying a gun is not a game – these are dangerous weapons. this incident put lives at risk and there is a very real chance that someone could have been killed. “Unlike a stabbing, you do not need to use force to fire a gun. it’s something you can do from afar without engaging with your victim at all. But you are still very much involved; if someone loses their life because you pulled the trigger, you are wholly responsible and will bear that burden for the rest of your life.” Raveendrakumar was found guilty of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm and violent disorder at a trial in February. he was found not guilty of possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence. he was sentenced to three years imprisonment for conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm, and 18 months for violent disorder, to run concurrently to the three year sentence. ali pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence, conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm and violent disorder. he was sentenced to a total of seven years imprisonment: five years and six months for conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm; three years for possession of a firearm; 18 months for violent disorder, and nine months for possession of a bladed article, to run concurrently. he was also sentenced to 18 months for a separate incident, a robbery where he held a knife to the victim’s neck, which will run consecutively to the sentence he received for conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm. Charlery pleaded guilty to possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, for which he was sentenced to 15 months in prison. he was also found guilty of drug supply offences and sentenced  to three years in prison, which will run consecutively. his total sentence is therefore four years and three months.

Knife-point robbery at Bedford cash point PoLiCE are appealing for witnesses following a knife-point robbery in Bedford on Monday, March 4.   the incident occurred at around 9.20pm, on avon drive, near the parade of shops. the victim had just taken money out of the cashpoint and was holding a £10 note in his hand, when he was approached by a man holding a 12 inch kitchen knife.  the offender pushed the victim to the ground and pointed the knife at his head, before taking the money and running off in the direction of

tyne Crescent.  he is described as black, in his late 20s/early 30s, around 5’10”, of slim/medium build, with short dark hair, wearing a long black jacket with the hood worn up. if you have information that could help police with their enquiries, please contact dC nandre on 101, or visit the our online reporting centre quoting reference 40/12933/19. alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Black Grape + Guests Collapsed Lung Bedford Corn Exchange Saturday 23rd March

Black grape could only have been made in Manchester. the swagger, fun and cryptic humour seem hewn from a city that offers a different way of English urban life to London. Both shaun Ryder and Paul Leveridge, known as Kermit, came from edgy-but-cool parts of the city. in shaun’s case salford, with Kermit originating Moss side. so we have two restlessly creative men, both from the wrong side of the tracks, neither inclined to go to art school or enrol on an MFa programme, yet loaded with street smarts and musical talent, and wanting the world. good old punk had told every scally they could have it, and a generation went for it in their own ways, with varying degrees of success. shaun’s astonishing rise and fall with the happy Mondays is the stuff of legend.

as the friendship developed, so too did a stunning collaboration. it’s great When you’re straight...yeah, the ironically entitled album, gave a nod to their hook up as drugs buddies around the grizzled fag end of happy Mondays and Kermit’s band the Ruthless Rap assassins. it was a storming phoenix rising from the ashes of the other projects that seemed to have run their course. Black grape followed this up with stupid, stupid, stupid. then...nothing… until now. Black grape are back on the road, and with new album Pop Voodoo – a rewind to over twenty years ago and the glory days. shaun’s word play has never been deployed to such devastating effect, and he scores a bullseye whether he hits the obvious targets (trump), and the more obscure ones... special guests for the evening is Collapsed Lung.  tickets £25 from seetickets & the central box office: 01234718044 & www.bedfordcornexchange.co.uk.  Locally with no booking fee from slide Record shop and Mario’s hair design. Free after show party at Esquires!

HARD WON LAST GASP 3 POINTS TRY WINS IT FOOTBALL – LUTON TOWN FC

RUGBY – THE BLUES

by Mark Wood

by Mark Wood

ChaMPionshiP beDFoRD bLueS .............44 (20) yoRKSHiRe CaRnegie ...45 (7) RuMouReD summer target Dan temm showed off his impressive credentials by grabbing a last-gasp try to break bedford hearts under the Friday night Lights.

Luton town .......................2 (0) RoCHDaLe ............................0 (0) HatteRS hotshot and leading League one scorer James Collins helped fire top-of-the-table town to a hard-fought victory in front of onwatching Republic of ireland boss Mick McCarthy. Valiant dale, who finished the game with nine men, belied their lowly league placing to push hatters hard throughout, but Luton struck twice in the second half to win 2-0.

town took the lead approaching the hour through danny hylton’s near-post header and sealed it with Collins’ late blockbuster to seal three more valuable points and keep another clean sheet as they extended their record unbeaten league run to 22 games.

a frustrating first half saw dale battle hard and limit the hatters. super play on five minutes saw hylton,

Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu and the recalled Elliot Lee combine as Collins’ first-time effort was deflected inches wide. at the other end dale had a huge opportunity on 16 minutes when Ethan hamilton’s throughball dissected town’s defence as Matt done rounded James shea, but sonny Bradley was just able to hold him off as Luton cleared. Moments later Luton, who were the better team, should have broken the deadlock when Mpanzu’s tantalising cross found hylton at the far post but he fired high and wide from six yards. the hatters continued to press against a battling and niggly Rochdale side as alan McCormack volleyed just over from outside the area on 27 minutes from a half-cleared free-kick. dale threatened intermittently as shea smothered well with ex-hatter ian henderson lurking, while hylton got in behind on 35 minutes as Collins’ first-time effort streaked wide. Penalty shouts for a foul on hylton were waved away while Collins’ left-foot drive was well parried as town ratcheted up the pressure. Luton ended the half strongly as Mpanzu and andrew shinnie combined, only to see the scotsman’s effort saved, while Lee’s first-time effort from distance went well over as a frustrating half-time ended goalless. dale stifled the town as they prevented their full-backs from getting forward, but town took more control in a nervy second half as they claimed a well-deserved victory. shinnie sent Mpanzu clean through in the opening seconds only for andy Lonergan to save well, before Ethan hamilton fired right at shea. another wonderful shinnie through-ball sent Jack stacey racing away from halfway but he paused too long as Joe Bunney got back brilliantly to deny him with just the keeper to beat. Rochdale continued to carry a threat as henderson chipped wide with shea out of position before town deservedly snatched the lead on 59 minutes.

the Blues led throughout against lowly yorkshire Carnegie at goldington Road as they ran in six tries in an ill-tempered encounter.

James Collins.

stacey did brilliantly down the right and his driven cross to the near-post drew an unbelievable save from Lonergan with Lee’s header from the follow up hitting the bar before hylton was able to head home from pointblank range. Buoyed by the goal hylton centred a wonderful cross as Collins’ downward header was turned past the post before the irishman dragged another great chance wide. sub Zach Clough’s low strike was easy for shea before Lee burst forward and his low deflected longranger was superbly saved by the in-form stopped. sub Kazenga LuaLua was denied by MJ Williams after more great work from stacey before hamilton was dismissed with five minutes to go as an awful foul on shinnie resulted in a second yellow card, having been booked in the opening seconds for a foul on the same man. and Luton made sure of victory in stoppage time when more wonderful dancing feet from LuaLua teed up Collins to rifle left-footed into the top corner, leaving Lonergan with no chance, things got even worse for dale when, having used all their subs, injury forced Callum Camps off at the death as town continued their assault on the title. hattERs: James shea, James Justin, alan McCormack, sonny Bradley (C), Matty Pearson, Jack stacey, danny hylton (Luke Berry 89), Elliot Lee (Kazenga Lua Lua 81), andrew shinnie, Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu (dan Potts 75), James Collins. subs not used: george Moncur, Jason Cummings, harry isted, alan sheehan. daLE: andy Lonergan, Jim Mcnulty, Ryan delaney, stephen dooley, MJ Williams, Callum Camps, Matt done (Calvin andrew 63), Bradden inman, Ethan hamilton, Joe Bunney (Jordan Williams 63), ian henderson (C, Zach Clough 71). subs not used: Rory holden, daniel ashmead, Brad Wade, Luke Matheson. Bookings: hamilton 1, 85; Mpanzu 24; Lonergan 45; shinnie 65; MJ Williams 70. Red Card: hamilton 85. Referee: Lee swabey. assistant Referees: Paul Kelly and ollie Williams. Fourth official: tom Reeves. attendance: 9,905 (dale 199). star hatter: Jack stacey – a real thoroughbred on the right.

however, yorkshire refused to go away and snatched victory with the last play of the game, scoring their sixth try in the sixth minute of stoppage time to triumph 45-44 as temm starred on audition as he gave the Blues faithful a sneak peak of what they could be getting next term.

Playing up the slope, Bedford were quickly in control as Jake sharp’s third-minute drop-goal attempt went wide. handbags at a scrum handed Bedford a penalty and, after kicking to the corner, a catch-and-drive move ended in Jacob Fields touching down with sharp adding the extras. things got worse on 13 minutes when the visitors conceded another penalty as some backchat moved it into kickable range and sharp’s long-ranger made it 10-0. the game was simmering away and yorkshire got themselves back into striking distance midway through the half when repeated infringements at a lineout gifted the visitors a penalty try with sean McCarthy being sent to the bin. Parity in numbers was soon restored as Miles thoroughgood was yellow-carded for taking out Rich Lane in the air, enabling Bedford to grab their second try. Jarad Williams made a brilliant bulldozing break from a lineout and he unselfishly fed dean adamson to score an unconverted try in the corner. Lovely hands from Carnegie opened Bedford up only for the onrushing Chris Elder to fumble at the vital moment, before the Blues scored their third try on the half hour. a huge maul from a lineout eventually ended in huw Worthington being driven over, for another unconverted try. a try-of-the-season contender went begging from Matt Worley as he beat umpteen players after Peter Lucock’s spill, only to be snared just short of the line. Bedford pressed for a bonus point try before the break but Carnegie’s defence stood firm as the Blues led 20-7 at the interval. Visiting prop Joe Buckle was sin-binned early in the second half and Worthington took full advantage on 50 minutes to score his second try after fine work by dom Morris. Carnegie just wouldn’t go away though and scored a great second try four minutes later when Elder burst past two would-be tacklers on the right and Jade te Rure converted. a sloppy turnover eventually resulted inElijah niko bludgeoning his way over in the corner on the hour for a wonderful score with te Rure adding a wonderful touchline conversion. sharp’s penalty once again nudged Bedford further ahead after more good work by Morris, before more lax Bedford defending allowed Lucock to gallop straight through on 67 minute to leave te Rure a simple conver-

sion the closing stages were marred by a series of needless penalties by the visitors, which weren’t all properly punished. Josh Bainbridge was binned for again tackling the catcher in the air only for Bedford to lose an attacking lineout. however, they did get their reward when Rich Lane’s lightning break was chipped over the top by Ryan hutler for James Lennon to seize the loose ball and score with nine minutes to go, with sharp adding the extras. still Carnegie wouldn’t desist and hit back moments later when niko couldn’t hold a crossfield kick but antonio Kiri Kiri was on hand to grasp the loose ball and slide over to score with te Rure again on target. two more terrible penalties by yorkshire failed to be punished by yellow cards – and this proved to be telling despite another Blues score with a minute to go, tadgh McElroy benefitting from a huge catch-and-drive move with sharp converting. immediately from the restart, niko was allowed to score with te Rure converting and then adding a penalty in the fourth minute of stoppage time to narrow the difference to a score. and Carnegie broke Bedford’s hearts with the very last play of the game as a flowing move appeared to be rounded off with a forward pass, temm scoring under the posts and te Rure adding the simplest of conversions to snatch the most unlikely of victories. Worley lamented: “it is frustrating. We built up quite a good lead although it was try, after try, after try. We were quite unlucky not to come away with a win on that, sometimes it just happens like that. it’s just the way it is sometimes.” Bedford believed it was their decision-making that let them down on the night and they are determined to learn from it. the northampton saints back added: “it’s incredibly frustrating, some of our decision-making wasn’t on point as it usually is and they exploited it well at the end of the game and well done to them for coming away with the win. “We just said little errors and maybe some people not on the same page or whatnot (cost us), we are just trying to not get a bit ahead of ourselves and not looking at the scoreline and thinking about the situation and just remaining calm’s probably the best thing to do, rather than panicking a bit almost. We just look forward’s to next weekend’s game and get a win there. “We need to build on what we didn’t do very well, put it into practise in training this week and hopefully it doesn’t happen again next weekend.” BLUEs: Rich Lane, Ryan hutler (toby trinder 25-31), Matt Worley, dom Morris, dean adamson, Jake sharp, Lee dickson (C, James Lennon 62), sean McCarthy (toby trinder 62), Jacob Fields (tadgh McElroy 55), alex Penny (Ben Cooper 55), Will Carrick-smith (Paddy Ryan 65 Ed Coulson 80+3), Mark Flanagan, oli Curry, huw Worthington (Josh Buggea 58), Jarad Williams. t: Fields 7; adamson22; Worthington30, 50; Lennon 71; McElroy 79. C: sharp 8, 50, 72, 80. P: sharp 14, 64.
