Sweden’s eighth funniest comedian – Olaf Falafel, currently domiciled in Luton, has won critical acclaim for his crazy, zany, idiotic performances at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe. The Times voted one of his jokes number two in their top 10. He has performed locally at various events notably at the ‘Specs Required’ stand-up comedy night at Luton Town FC. He also has performed in benefit nights in support of the Luton and Dunstable Hospital’s Neonatal Unit, where his eldest daughter received life saving treatment. When he’s not wowing audiences with his crazyness he is an accomplished children’s author and illustrator. His third book in the series of ‘Old MacDonald heard a parp’ was released last month. There’s still time to catch him at the Edinburgh Fringe – performing until August 26th.

that the voices of all those that are behind us are heard.” Capital & Regional, owners of The Mall shopping centre in Luton are opposing the Newlands Park development next to M1 Junction 10. Newlands Park would fund the

17,500-capacity stadium at Power Court, but C&R says it would be harmful to its business if it is given the green light. C&R also runs The Mall at Maidstone in Kent where the local council last week gave the go-ahead for a Marks & Spencer superstore on a business park next to Junction 7 of

A-Level success stories from all over the county The waiting is finally over as students across Central Bedfordshire received their A-Level results. early indications for provisional results show that all ten schools showed an improvement resulting in an increase in the average points score per entry across Central Bedfordshire of 3.4 points to 32.1 (C+ grade). The average score for academic students (which includes those doing extended A-Levels) is 32.2 (C+ grade), up 3.4 points from 2017. Technical/vocational students’ average score is 36.0 (Distinction grade), up 2.3 points from last year. There have been plenty of individual success stories too. manshead cE Academy in Dunstable is celebrating 40 per cent of students achieving top grades A*B, including 15 per cent of students who topped that with A*-A results. All Saints Academy, also in Dunstable, are celebrating an improvement in A-Level qualifications. Fourteen students have university places, and some are now pursuing apprenticeships in a vocational setting, for example in the Fire Service and midwifery. At Vandyke Upper School in Leighton Buzzard one particularly impressive pupil, Julia Debicka, arrived in england from Poland aged

seven speaking no english. She has achieved four A-Levels graded A*, A*, A and B. Two students from Harlington Upper School will be studying at the University of Oxford, with many others studying prestigious courses such as medicine, engineering and mathematics at top universities. At Stratton Upper School in Biggleswade, William Hyde took four A-Levels and achieved three A* grades and a B. he will now go on to read Physics at Durham university. Among the many successful students at Redborne Upper School in Ampthill were twins Alex and matthew cummins. Alex is to study computing at Imperial College in London and Matthew will read Natural Sciences at Cambridge. Euan Farrell is also going to study Natural Sciences at Cambridge where William Simpson will read Law. Helena milton-Jones is going to study medicine at Imperial. Councillor Steven Dixon, executive Member for Families, education and Children, said: “These results are down to the hard work of the students, teachers and other staff at our schools and the pupils’ families. After all of the waiting, I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the summer and I wish them the very best of luck.”

the M20, despite misgivings about its effect on the nearby town centre. The store will sell clothing, household goods and food and will also have a cafe. It will become the second fashion retailer at the park after Next opened a store in 2014. Following the approval of a new M&S in Kent, despite objections by C&R, #saveourtown asked: “If Maidstone can do it, why can’t Luton?” The campaigners said: “It’s time for people power versus PLC power. Be a part of the #saveourtown campaign and join the thousands of voices coming together to take on this objection from a faceless corporation. This is OUR town.” #saveourtown community ambassadors are continuing to spread the word about the campaign by speaking to residents across Luton. They spent four hours talking to shoppers at the Asda store at Wigmore on Friday and said “99.9 per cent of the people were in favour

of Power Court and Newlands Park.” Tens of thousands of #saveourtown posters and leaflets were printed thanks to a JustGiving crowdfunding appeal and many are appearing in windows of homes, businesses and vehicles in Luton and beyond. People are being urged to take pictures and share them with comments on the campaign’s social media platforms. Among the latest supporters of #saveourtown is Luton-based charity Transitions UK, which supports disadvantaged young people at risk, aged 14 to 25, to ensure they have healthy, happy and fulfilled adult lives.

Luton’s BID get behind redevelopment plans #saveourtown has welcomed the news that Luton BID are supportive of the planning applications for Newlands Park and Power Court in Luton. The response, published on Thursday (August 16) states that the proposed developments have “the potential to raise the standards in the town and help improve the overall perception of the town” if they go ahead and take into account five additional recommendations from Luton BID. Nigel Green, Chairman of #saveourtown said: “We’re delighted

with the publication of this decision, which we know comes after a period of thorough deliberation by the Luton BID Board of directors. “This response shows a united front in supporting our town and only adds to the overwhelming feedback that we’ve already received in favour of these two proposals. “however, we must remember the opposition from Capital & Regional (owners of The Mall) continues, and we mustn’t take our eye off the ball.” For the full text (click)

A Level success for BMS Students STAFF and students are once again celebrating outstanding A Level results at Bedford Modern School today with a third of all students obtaining three A grades or better. Whilst the proportion of students gaining C grades or above has fallen nationally an impressive 51% of grades achieved were A* - A, up 6% from last year. A* grades have increased to a fantastic 17%, against a national average of just 8%, and more than 80% were A* - B. Eryk Sokolowski received the highest grades in the School with four A*s in Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Further Maths securing him a highly sought after place at the University of Cambridge to study engineering. he said: “I joined BMS in Year 10 and it is the best school I have ever been to with teachers who work hard to get you where you need to be and are always there to support you.” Top performing female student Lydia clewlow obtained three A*s in Chemistry, Physics and Maths. She said: “I am so excited to start the Chemical engineering course at the University of Birmingham as it’s what I have always wanted to do. I’ve had a fantastic time in the Sixth Form

at BMS; there are so many extracurricular opportunities here and I loved being involved backstage in the theatre and playing in the orchestra. All the teachers have been really supportive and I am really happy with my results.” Not all students have chosen the university path, for example Amy Leaning has already begun an apprenticeship at award-winning Soaring Falcon Accountancy. Amy has been at BMS since Year 3 and achieved a fantastic A*AA in DT, Business and economics. headmaster Alex Tate said: “It has been an absolute pleasure to watch this year group grow and develop during the past 12 months and they should be very proud indeed of what they have achieved. “It is a tremendous set of results and some of these young men and women have surpassed all expectations on the grades that they have received. however the Class of 2018 has contributed so much more to the life of the school in numerous different ways and for that I would like to extend my thanks. I wish them every success and look forward to hearing from them in the future.”

Seventeen year-old Bedford School pupil and Commonwealth Games cyclist, ethan Vernon, has set a new world record in the U19 Male Junior 3km Individual Pursuit on the first day of the hSBC UK National Youth and Junior Track Championships held in Newport, which began on Sunday 23 July. ethan, who is still just 17 years old, stopped the clock at 3:10.121 in qualification – over six seconds clear of his nearest rival and obliterating the world record by two and a half seconds – at time which is 15 seconds faster than Sir Bradley Wiggins’ personal best! ethan went under the world record mark again in the final, crossing the line at 3:10.371 to win gold and defend his title as National Champion. ethan, who narrowly missed a Commonwealth bronze medal by just a split second in the Team Pursuit, told Bedford School in January. “My main aim this year is to break the world record in the individual pursuit, then on to the World Championships at the end of August. This is all part of my journey to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.”

War-time ‘pill box’ restored WheN the German Army invaded Poland in 1939 it marked the beginning of the Second World War. Soon most of europe fell under German control, and so Great Britain – with its Commonwealth partners – stood totally alone against the might of Germany. As part of the British anti-invasion preparations, 28,000 small fortifications such as pillboxes were constructed in 1940 across the country. The pillbox pictured was just one of many that were built around the Kempston and elstow area to protect the railway and the munition factories in Ampthill Road, Kempston hardwick, which were

operated by the ‘Joe Lyons catering company!’ (the company’s usual work was considered to be suited to the production of munitions, and so a Royal Ordnance Factory was run and managed by J. Lyons and Co.). These pillboxes, so called because of their distinctive shape, would have been manned by members of the home Guard, or as seen on the television programme “Dads Army”. To restore the pillbox, much work had to be done. After removing all the weeds and vegetation the brickwork was cleaned, showing how poor its condition really was. Funds had to be raised so

that my project to protect this building (as it is part of the history of Kempston and elstow) could properly begin. Although neither english heritage nor the harpur Trust could offer funds, I managed to raise the money so that the work could go ahead. The refurbishment of the 76-year-old pillbox was carried out by local builder Pelham Chambers and Malcolm henrickson Flat Roofing Services Ltd. Below is how the pillbox looks now, having been completed recently, ready to receive visitors. For more information contact me on 07709 879245. Jon Miles

Ginger Wildheart Bedford Esquires Wednesday 26th September

Ginger Wildheart is an english rock guitartist, singer and songwriter. he was guitarist in The Quireboys from 1987-89 and a year later formed rock band The Wildhearts. Alongside this he has had a solo career, and is now heading out on the road to support his recent album ‘Ghost in the Tanglewood’ released by Graphite Records in March 2018. “While leaning towards country music, my fairly unavoidable accent means that the songs come off less Willie Nelson and more Bobby Thompson, but every lyric is purely heartfelt and every song is as true a

story as you’ll ever hear. This stuff has always been in my blood since I was a wee nipper and it’s an honour to finally get it out for people to hear” says Ginger. This album began life as a Pledge Campaign with all profits donated to The Samaritans to raise an awareness and support suicide prevention and mental health issues – a theme running through the album and close to Ginger’s heart. Tickets are £15 advance, on sale right now from Seetickets.com, or in person without a booking fee from Slide Record Shop, esquires and Mario’s hair Design, Kempston.
