Bedford High street stabbing
A mAn has been sentenced to five years and four months in prison after stabbing another man in Bedford in June.
Adam Gunning, 21, of Cody Road, Clapham, near Bedford, was sentenced at Luton Crown Court on Tuesday, August 21, 2018, after pleading guilty to wounding with intent, possession of a bladed article and theft. Gunning was involved in an altercation with another man in Bedford High Street on the evening of 25 June, 2018, which resulted in him stabbing the man in the shoulder. The injuries required hospital treatment, but were not lifethreatening. Gunning was then pushed into a nearby branch of Tesco by a member of the public, and staff evacuated the store and locked him inside. While in the store, Gunning stole a bottle of water to drink and attempted to hide the knife in a box of cereal, but it was later recovered by officers. On sentencing, Judge Lynn Tayton, said: “Whatever the provocation, there is no excuse for stabbing someone.”
Detective Constable Jo Barkat, investigating, said: “Knife crime will never be tolerated in Bedfordshire. This case is an example of the consequences of carrying a weapon. not only can you cause serious harm to another person, you will end up behind bars. “There is no excuse for possessing a knife, and I hope that this case serves as a stark warning about the consequences of carrying a weapon.” Gunning, who was given credit for an early guilty plea, was sentenced to five years and four months for wounding with intent. He also received 20 months for possession of a bladed article and one month for theft. He will serve the sentences concurrently.

DEVELOPMENT WILL BRING FURTHER INVESTMENT The #saveourtown group yesterday called for two major developments in Luton to be given the green light “at the very earliest opportunity” following two ‘positive’ retail impact reports. by Geoff Cox The campaign responded to the
reports, published by Luton Borough Council, on Power Court and newlands Park after consultation ended on Tuesday. The Luton Town Football Club planning applications, submitted to the council more than two years ago, are for a 17,500-capacity stadium at Power Court in the town centre and a mixed use scheme to fund it next to m1 Junction 10. #saveourtown is a community-led initiative that is independent, non-political and run by volunteers who aim to promote the plans, which it says are essential for much-needed regeneration of Luton.
nigel Green, who chairs the group, said: “The committee of #saveourtown can legitimately claim to speak for the vast majority of the people of Luton. Over the last few months we have reached out to businesses, communities and residents and their response to the plans, and to our campaign, on conventional and social media and through face-to-face contact, has been overwhelmingly positive and humbling. “When the original plans for Power Court and newlands Park were revealed by 2020 Developments Ltd an unprecedented 11,000 people felt compelled to

Gangland gun suppliers jailed Life imprisonment and 20-year prison term for Bedford men who sold guns to criminal gangs TWO men have been sentenced to life imprisonment and 20 years three months behind bars respectively after the biggest single seizure of illegally held firearms and ammunition in our history. matthew Harwozinski, of Conduit Road, Bedford, and Ricky Garner, of Abbey Fields, Elstow, pleaded guilty for their role in importing and modifying dozens of weapons. These firearms have been linked to gangland shootings in Bedfordshire and elsewhere across the UK.
Between may 2017 and January 2018 Harwozinski, under a false name, bought dozens of blank firing handguns and more than 1,000 rounds of blank ammunition from the Czech Republic. The weapons were then converted by Garner, an engineer at a metal fabricator factory, so they could fire modified live ammunition. These weapons and the ammunition were then supplied to the criminal underworld. Estimates suggest the weapons and ammunition were sold for between £1,500 and £2,000. Their buyers would have had to return to Garner and Harwozinski for their unique ammunition. The duo sold weapons to at least one gang based in Luton, while their guns and ammunition have also been recovered in London and the West midlands. The blank firearms are legal in the Czech
Republic, but their possession is illegal in the UK given the way they work. Harwozinski was given a life sentence at Luton Crown Court on Friday, August 23, 2018,and will serve a minimum term of 11 years eight months, minus the time he has already spent in custody. Garner will serve at least half his sentence of 20 years and three months before he is considered for release on licence. Sentencing the pair, Judge Andrew Bright QC said: “The offences to which each of you have pleaded guilty are of the utmost seriousness and this court has a duty to the public to ensure the sentence placed upon you reflects the incalculable danger your actions have caused to the safety of the public and those in the criminal underworld.” Ballistics testing found the converted weapons were more than capable of firing lethal shots. A number of the weapons were fully automatic and able to fire around eight bullets per second. The converted weapons have been discharged in public on a number of occasions, endangering the life of innocent people, and on at least one occasion their use caused injury in circumstances amounting to attempted murder. The weapons were used in at least three shootings in Luton last year, including two on the same night last December, during which bullets caused substantial damage to the mcDonald’s in marsh Road and a number of vehicles. Since the pair were arrested in January, there have been further incidents in the metropolitan Police area and in Bedfordshire
that have involved pistols and ammunition supplied by Garner and Harwozinski. These have come to light though forensic comparisons. The operation was led by our Serious & Organised Crime Unit (SOCU), assisted by the metropolitan Police (Op Trident), national Crime Agency (nCA) and the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit (ERSOU). Detective Inspector Justin Dipper, from our SOCU, said: “A combination of good intelligence, proactive policing and sheer persistence on behalf of our officers has taken dozens of lethal weapons off the streets and stopped any further supply into Bedfordshire. “The fact these weapons have been repeatedly fired in public shows the huge danger Garner and Harwozinski placed innocent people in, and we are glad the court has responded with such strong sentences for those involved in organised crime. “Through this investigation, SOCU has demonstrated its ability to work with, and lead, other agencies in pursuit of dangerous criminals. The fact Bedfordshire’s SOCU has been able to mount such a proactive and wide ranging operation is testament to the dedication and talent we have in the team.” Garner pleaded guilty to three offences, namely converting the weapons, manufacturing ammunition and possessing ammunition without a firearms certificate. Harwozinski pleaded guilty to four offences, specifically to importing and converting firearms, manufacturing ammunition and possessing firearms with intent to enable others to endanger life.

Bedford man jailed Man sentenced for for knife possession crowbar attack A mAn was jailed for 15 months at Luton Crown Court on monday August 20, 2018, after being found guilty of driving offences and possession of a large knife. Brandon Hamblin, 20, of Vineyard Way, Bedford, was sentenced to eight months imprisonment for dangerous driving, one month for driving while disqualified and six months for possession of a bladed article, all to run consecutively. On 8 July, two officers spotted a car driving in a dangerous manner in High Street South, Dunstable. The driver, Hamblin, failed to stop after being signalled by the officers. A pursuit took place during which Hamblin was driving at excessive speed on a single carriageway. After approximately 10 minutes he stopped. The officers carried out a search of the vehicle, during which a large kitchen knife was found in the door of the car. Detective Constable Jeremy Aitkin said: “Hamblin was driving at excessive speed and in an extremely dangerous manner. “He was also found in possession of a large knife, and we will not tolerate violent crime in our county. We
hope this case will serve as a warning and deter other people from dangerous driving and habitual knife carrying.” ––––––––––––––
Brothel closed
A PROPERTy in Radnor Walk, Bedford has been temporarily closed down after officers received reports that it was being used as a brothel. The Policing team executed a search warrant, following reports of anti-social behaviour. Officers seized a number of items from the property, which will further assist the investigation and all occupants were offered safeguarding.
A mAn has been sentenced to sevenand-a-half years in prison for attacking a man with a crowbar in Luton. Romanian national nicolae Artan, 31, of no fixed address, was sentenced at Luton Crown Court on Tuesday August 21, 2018, after being found guilty of committing grievous bodily harm with intent. At approximately 1am on Thursday, 26 October, Artan had an argument with another Romanian man in manchester Street, and assaulted him with a crowbar. The victim sustained fractures to his skull and spine, along with multiple lacerations, and required specialist hospital treatment. The incident was captured on a mobile phone and the footage was shared widely on social media. A few days after the incident Artan returned to his home country, but his actions did not escape the
attention of the local Romanian community, and even reached a Superintendent of the Romanian Police, based at the country’s Embassy in London. A European Arrest Warrant was issued, and he was apprehended and brought to the UK to face the consequences. Detective Constable Scott Hannam, who investigated the incident, said: “This attack enraged Luton’s Romanian population. With assistance from that community, Artan was identified and apprehended. “The victim sustained serious injuries, and I’m pleased that the court understood the severity of the attack and handed out a lengthy sentence. “This demonstrates violence will not be tolerated in Bedfordshire, and we will come down hard on those who seek to bring harm to others in this way.”

write letters and messages of support to the council. Their voices must not be forgotten and our campaign aims to ensure that they are not silenced.” mr Green said the group’s committee has considered both the Chase & Partners and WyG impact supplemental assessment reports and notes that both are “positive in their conclusions”. He added: “It is obvious that the impacts of the proposals will be negligible to any business operating in the town centre, which effectively means The mall. “WyG conclude that the proposed developments are unlikely to have significant adverse effects on our neighbours in Dunstable, nor will they negatively impact any other proposed investments in Luton. Furthermore, they say that both applications will attract significant future investment in Luton.

Spreading the word A TeAm of volunteers from the Save Our Town campaign will be in Luton town centre from 11am to 1pm today (Thursday, August 30) to engage with shoppers and distribute campaign leaflets. They will be spreading the news about the “fantastic opportunities” presented by the development and regeneration plans at Power Court and Newlands Park. Campaigners will be on hand to answer questions and respond to any concerns that might be raised by members of the public. Nigel Green, who chairs the group, has urged anyone who wants to find out more about this “once-in-a-lifetime chance” to transform the facilities in the town and its image to people in the outside world,
“#saveourtown strongly believe that the dual project will act as a substantial catalyst for more regeneration and investment in Luton in future years.” mr Green said that, critically, it noted that both Chase & Partners and WyG have acknowledged and commented on the existence of a Permitted User List and an Exclusion List. This is to ensure that newlands Park is a substantially differentiated ‘high-end’ retail offering (66% aspirational brands) - when compared to the town centre - and that ‘poaching’ of retailers to newlands Park from The mall is avoided. “Some concerns over the enforceability
to come down and talk with the team. “We’ve been both amazed and humbled by the level of very positive support and the compliments for our campaign that we’ve received from people when we’ve been to other shopping centres around Luton,” said mr Green. “Now we want to give people in the centre of town the chance to talk directly to us and to understand just how much they, and everyone else, stands to benefit from the Power Court and Newlands Park project.” The volunteers will be moving around George Street, St George’s Square and other public thoroughfares around The mall entrances during lunchtime on Thursday. “Please come and have a chat, we look forward to seeing you,” said mr Green.
of such mechanisms has been expressed, but our clear understanding is that 2020 Developments Ltd has volunteered a contract, through a Section 106 conditional notice, that will enable the council, through the planning department and planning process, to control the type of retailer that could operate out of newlands Park in the first instance and in the future,” said mr Green.
“Deviation from these lists (or type of permitted retailer) would enable interested parties to use the planning process and mechanisms to challenge such decisions. There is precedent for such ‘protective conditions’, albeit not on this scale,
and our planning advice has confirmed that such an agreement is legally enforceable as described.
“C&P have noted that there is sufficient interest and demand from luxury and aspirational retailers for the plans for newlands Park to be realised and that there is no discernible crossover between retailers already based in Luton and others that may choose to take up positions in the new developments. There is nO overlap between the aspirational retailers likely to be located at newlands Park and the “must have” and “non-discretionary” retailers of The mall. “Both developments will retain much of the expenditure within the town that currently leaks to surrounding areas.
“Our conclusion is unequivocal. Any possible negative impact on the town centre from newlands Park alone is likely to be a very low single percentage figure perhaps 1.7% - 3%. There can be no doubt whatsoever, that when the positive impact of the Power Court development, together with 10,000 new jobs and £250m annual improvement to the local and regional economy is considered, the net result will be a substantial positive impact on town centre retailers. “The positive impact will be further enhanced by the catalyst created by newlands Park and Power Court for future developments and investment. “We therefore commend the proposals to Luton Borough Council and urge planning approval be passed at the very earliest opportunity.”

Overcoming cancer to School pupils net gain A-Level success £4,000 for charity
BEDFORD School pupil, Kieran Duxbury, refused to let cancer stand in the way of his burning desire to do well in his A-Levels; studying from his hospital bed while undergoing gruelling chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Bedford School pupil, Kieran Duxbury, refused to let cancer stand in the way of his burning desire to do well in his A-Levels; studying from his hospital bed while undergoing gruelling chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Kieran was diagnosed with a cancerous pituitary tumour in December 2017, which meant he spent the majority of the academic year in hospital or recovering from treatment. Despite this, he went on to
pass his A-Levels: gaining a B in Geography, B in Religious Studies and a C in Economics. Kieran underwent four rounds of intensive chemotherapy and five consecutive weeks of exhaustive radiotherapy. Some days his body was so fatigued he would spend a solid 24-hours sleeping. Fitting in study time was, therefore, a huge challenge. Often working from his hospital bed, Kieran took the opportunity to catch up on lessons on the days when he felt well enough to do so. Thanks to the unwavering support of his parents and elder brother, combined with the help and support from the school, he had access to the resources he needed. There were tears of happiness all round when Kieran received his results. Given the huge amount of turmoil he has undergone, to achieve these results was a tremendous achievement and means that he has secured his place at Worcester University to study Sociology. The best news of all is that Kieran has been given the all-clear from doctors. The tumour has completely vanished and he is now officially in remission.
YOuNGSTerS at a Bedford school are celebrating after their fundraising activities netted more than £4,000 for charity. Pupils at Wootton upper School have supported a host of local and national charities throughout the 2017-18 school year including Children In Need, macmillan, make a Wish Foundation, Cancer research and help for heroes. Their fundraising efforts - including cake sales, a summer fayre and a Sport relief mile to name but a few, have raised a total of £4,395.18 which has been distributed to 12 charities. In addition, pupils supported the Bedford Foodbank Appeal donating a minibus full of food and hosted an afternoon tea party including musical entertainment for 40 Wootton senior citizens. michael Gleeson, school principal, said: “I’m very proud of the efforts of our pupils and teaching staff in supporting so many deserving charities this year. “The generosity of parents, grand-

parents and extended family has helped us to raise an impressive sum once again and I would like to thank everybody for their time and support. “Playing our part to help the community and the less fortunate is something we all feel very strongly about at Wootton upper School and we will continue to encourage our pupils to make a difference next year.” Last month, Wootton upper School played host to a biennial joint concert with its partner school, the specialist music school e.T.A hoffmann Gymnasium in Bamberg, Germany, at Kimberley College. During the event, the 6th form choir showcased their dulcet tones to a packed audience while a brass band entertained from the balcony area. Wootton upper is hosting an Open evening on September 20 from 5pm to 7.30pm, for Year 8 pupils to discuss options available from September 2019. Thurleigh’s larger than life ‘Sam’ dies aged 75
SAm GARRATT who died aged 75 just two days after his birthday was a larger than life character known throughout Thurleigh and the surrounding community. He was an old school farmer who worked hard and played hard but also had a gentle side with which he would help anyone he could, taking vegetables to people living on their own or picking fruit for jam makers. “He was a strong, rough man with heart of gold,” said his shooting friend mike Bearman who paid tribute at a packed St Peter’s Church in Thurleigh where the funeral was held at 11am on August 23. The church was so full that even those arriving half an hour early had to stand. many others paid their respects outside. “The huge number of people present showed what a popular person he was. He was a character taken in an untimely way”, said the Rev Clifford Bradley who conducted the service. The presence of friends and villagers, he added, was a great comfort to his widow monica, children Josh and Sheri and the wider family – including two brothers and a sister and two grandchildren. Rev Bradley, the former Vicar of Renhold, had earlier taken another big funeral at Ravensden where some of the Thurleigh congregation had been as well. David John Garratt, always known as ‘Sam’ because his father said he looked like a ‘Sam’, said mr Bearman, was born in Cople on July 27, 1943. He moved to Thurleigh with his family at an early age when his father maurice bought The Bury and he lived there all his life. He loved the farm and he loved the countryside and often went to work early

in the morning before running to school and often being caned for being late. He went to Keysoe and then Thurleigh and, as a regular truant, couldn’t wait to leave to start work. “He enjoyed life to the full,” said mr Bearman who remembered being sent into a thicket full of prickles and coming out cut and grazed after one of Sam’s practical jokes. He was a lover of wine – often rough stuff he would expect you to drink. Among his pet hates were traffic wardens. He got one drunk on something once. His daughter Sheri worked at Fuji and Sam developed an interest in photography. “Some of his landscapes were brilliant,” said mr Bearman. “He was never any good at sorting them out. But he was good.” The congregation sang ‘The Lord’s my Shepherd’, ‘We Plough the Fields and Scatter’ and ended with a rousing ‘Jerusalem’. Just before ‘And did those Feet’ there was a poignant reading by Josh of a poem he wrote when he couldn’t sleep on the night his father died. ON-GOING DEBATE ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE A1
“An inadequate response from our MP” mr Burt’s piece about the A1 in the August edition of the Biggleswade & Sandy Bulletin does not address the concerns that have been raised with him over many years. His response merely confirms that nothing has been achieved beyond holding “meetings” from which no action plan, let alone action, has resulted. mr Burt carefully constructs a statement that he has attended many meetings, while referring to the one in Biggleswade in may. He does not mention that he did not attend this meeting himself. Sandy Town Council has joined us in expressing disappointment that the meeting did not respond to our requests to discuss specifically our stretch of the A1. minutes for the other meetings referred to seem conspicuous by their absence. no progress has been made with implementing any improvements locally. In 2012, some 226 letters were sent to mr Burt asking for some simple improvements to new Road in Sandy, especially in relation to its junction with the A1. In August 2016, a number of shortcomings with the A1 locally were noted by two senior members of Highways England. Top of the list was the junction with new Road which is very poor, largely as a result of an absence of line markings in the central reservation. This results in confusion by users over right of way and
positioning of queuing vehicles. Similar junctions on the A1 at Buckden and Southoe have white-line markings which create a safer and more natural traffic flow. Why can we not have the same? none of these improvements would, in the scheme of things, be expensive or hard to implement. We sent mr Burt details in October last year yet his response ignored them. It seems we now have another Government Department involved, this one saying more housing is the (only?) way to kick start road improvements.
Is it too much to expect that we are represented?
Surely it is quite absurd that the fundamental considerations of road safety, congestion and pollution – to name but three – are set aside in favour of possible future house building? Local planning applications often include Transport Plans which have a common theme, namely ‘this development will not significantly affect the road network’. However, the cumulative effect of them all
Bodywork
over the past five or so years cannot be ignored. We have seen that expensive road widening will take place near Welwyn without any extra house building. In 1994, a fully detailed plan, highlighting a number of reasons why it was vitally needed, was prepared by the then Highways Agency. This was for a proper bypass linking Baldock with Alconbury so completing the A1 (m) as a strategic, motorway standard, road from ‘London to Tyneside’. nothing has been done while we all know that pollution, congestion and safety aspects have deteriorated significantly since 1994. Surely it is not too much to expect from our mP that he should represent the specific interests of Sandy and Beeston rather than trying to please far, far smaller communities that do not suffer from the blight on them that the present A1 inflicts on our community? I repeat the invitation issued to mr Burt in July last year to meet with the SG19 Road Group and to come and see these concerns for himself. now that Parliament is in recess perhaps his diary could be re-visited to find an hour or two. Please e-mail us via our website – www.SG19.org – in support. Stephen Allen Chairman, SG19 Road Safety Group, 27 Cambridge Road Sandy SG19 1JF

Potton man has made five charity trips to Kenya
my name is Luke Newman from Ibbett Lane, Potton, Bedfordshire. I have been on five charity trips to Kenya trips, just returning three weeks ago. It was a humanitarian trip to Nakuru in Kenya, helping children who are living in a deprived environment. This was my fifth trip and it was hugely successful. After visiting St.Trizah School in Nakuru, Kenya for four years, where we helped to construct ten classrooms, two dormitories, an office and a kitchen, we were in a position to help build a new school. This year we went to mama Kerry School, which is in the heart of the rhonda slums of Nakuru. We were able to build a new classroom and a whole new kitchen. Tasks including building walls and roofs from corrugated metal sheets, cementing the floors, making and placing the wooden roof trusses and building kitchen furniture such as tables and a serving hatch. We purchased ten new classroom tables and chairs, which also helped a local business for and painted then bright colours. They will provide much needed
work space for the children to be able to read and write. We also brought a new larger water tank and designed and constructed a new guttering system to help provide more water to the children. The children of Nakuru were extremely happy to see us. We were able to teach basic maths, english and music, as well as taking P.e lessons, including football and cricket. every trip is organised Derby County Community Trust and
African Adventures. This year, over 70 volunteers helped four different schools. They included my son reece, brother Paul, nephew max, cousin Bella and my good friend, another max! I have completely changed as a person. I am more understanding and patient but also very grateful for what life has given me. I have been through personal heartbreaks, but they seem like nothing compared to what the people I have met in Nakuru go through on a daily
basis. I believe it is possible to educate everyone, everywhere, and I am committed to that. each year, I have to raise over £2,600 which covers living accommodations, travel, food and essential building supplies. I have already started planning fundraisers for future trips including ‘Sporting Greats Black Tie Ball’ being held on Saturday 6 October 2018 from 7pm -12am at the Days Inn in Sandy. There will be a drink on arrival, three course meal, tea, coffee & mints, raffle & auction and entertainment in the form of a DJ. It costs £27.50 per ticket. For more information, please visit www.bit.ly/BTBA18 or contact me on 07709 446480 or luke.j.newman@hotmail.co m Auction items include signed harry Kane photo, signed Gordon Banks glove, signed usain Bolt Photo, signed Peter Shilton boot, signed Anthony Joshua photo, signed Chris eubank & Frank Bruno photos with replica shorts, signed Nigel Benn glove, Sir Geoff hurst & martin Peters signed england photo and Neville Southall signed autobiography.

Local community delve into the history & archaeology mORE than 50 members of local community groups and history societies joined woodland archaeology experts at a recent conference and woodland walk at Flitwick manor. Organised by the Greensand Country Landscape Partnership, the conference explored the background and research carried out on local woodlands, reviewed historical maps of wooded areas within the landscape and discovered historical names of the woods, in order to get a better understanding of their heritage. There were a number of high profile speakers at the event; with Stephen Coleman, Historic Environment Information Officer for Central Bedfordshire Council, Derek niemann, a long term
Bedfordshire resident and editor of Winter and Smallwoods magazine and Andrew Luke, Head Gardener at Wrest Park, providing key note speeches. Archaeological survey techniques were also discussed, including the methods for carrying out walk-over surveys and lidar, which is a surveying method that measures the distance to a target by illuminating the target with pulsed laser light and measuring the reflected pulses with a sensor. Commenting on the conference, mary Preen of Bow Brickhill History Society said: “Delving into History was a fascinating insight into the geology, ecology and history of Greensand Country.” Eloise markwick, Conservation and Project
Officer at the Greensand Country Landscape Partnership explains: “We were delighted with the response to the first of three annual ‘Delving into History Days’ and the enthusiasm and passion that the community clearly has for the distinct, beautiful and loved countryside of Greensand Country.” Guests were also informed about opportunities to apply for Community Heritage grand funding and provided with further details on how to achieve funding from the Greensand Country Landscape Partnership, to investigate and promote local heritage. Unfortunately for Thomas, who attempted to cover his face, his mask slipped which meant we were able to identify him quickly. “The court result is a great outcome and we are happy to have secured some sense of justice for the victim. Ginger Wildheart Bedford Esquires Wednesday 26th September
Ginger Wildheart is an English rock guitartist, singer and songwriter. He was guitarist in The Quireboys from 1987-89 and a year later formed rock band The Wildhearts. Alongside this he has had a solo career, and is now heading out on the road to support his recent album ‘Ghost in the Tanglewood’ released by Graphite Records in march 2018. “While leaning towards country music, my fairly unavoidable accent means that the songs come off less Willie nelson and more Bobby Thompson, but every lyric is purely heartfelt and every song is as true a
story as you’ll ever hear. This stuff has always been in my blood since I was a wee nipper and it’s an honour to finally get it out for people to hear” says Ginger. This album began life as a Pledge Campaign with all profits donated to The Samaritans to raise an awareness and support suicide prevention and mental health issues – a theme running through the album and close to Ginger’s heart. Tickets are £15 advance, on sale right now from Seetickets.com, or in person without a booking fee from Slide Record Shop, Esquires and mario’s Hair Design, Kempston.
