The citrus pale ale, called #saveourtown, has been created by Rockhopper Brewing Company and sponsored by Chicken George, which was named Best Takeaway In Britain in 2016. The beer will help promote the fight for Luton Town Football Club’s new stadium at Power Court in the town centre and the enabling mixeduse newlands Park development at m1 Junction 10. Described as “a light and summery brew”, the beer has been created to go down particularly well with fried chicken, a speciality of the legendary takeaway shop in Hitchin Road. A launch event will take place at 8pm on Friday at The Bricklayers Arms in High Town Road, with supporters of the campaign invited along to celebrate the first pint being pulled. The pub, known locally as “the Brickies”, is popular with real ale enthusiasts, including Hatters fans before and after home games. A number of #saveourtown

#saveourtown, said: “We’re over the moon that two creative and innovative local businesses have come together to support the campaign and the newlands Park and Power Court proposals. “We’re grateful for the ongoing support for this campaign, and hope that plenty of Lutonians will join us for the beer launch on Friday and help us raise a glass to our fantastic town, its brilliant people, and its bright future.”

Life sentence for throwing a baby out of a window actual bodily harm and one count of assault by beating. On August 1, 2017, at around 2am, police received numerous reports of a disturbance in Reginald Street, including reports that a baby had been thrown out of a window. The court heard how Ziemelis had attempted to gouge the baby’s eyes out and tried to strangle him, before throwing him from a second storey window. miraculously a member of the public managed to catch the baby by his legs as he fell, saving his life. Detective Constable Louise Continued from page 1
Granger, who investigated the case, said: “This is one of the most shocking incidents that I have seen in the whole of my career, and incredibly traumatic for all those involved. “Ziemelis is clearly a very dangerous individual and I’m glad that he has received such a severe sentence which reflects his horrendous actions from that evening. “It is only thanks to the actions of a member of the public that the baby is still alive today.” Ziemelis will be treated under the mental Health Act at Brockfield House before returning to prison.
An 18-year-old boy from Bedford has been jailed for three years after an off-duty police officer spotted him wearing a balaclava in the street in may this year. On may 25, 2018, the off-duty PC was with his wife in Clapham when he saw mohamed Rakib Ali, of Cavendish Street, Bedford. Ali was wearing a balaclava, a jacket with the hood up and yellow gloves, despite the warm weather. Initially thinking he may have just committed a burglary, the officer asked his wife to call police while he challenged him. His wife called police and a friend, another off-duty PC, who drove to help. After he had identified himself as an off-duty officer, Ali began to run away and discarded a bag he was holding into some nearby bushes. Once the second off-duty officer arrived, he helped search bushes for the discarded bag, which contained three rounds of live ammunition. Just underneath the bag, he found a revolver containing four rounds of ammunition – one was live and would have fired should the trigger have been pulled. An investigation revealed that the ammunition from the gun matched the ammunition in the bag. CCTV later examined as part of the investigation showed Ali spending around six minutes near the same bushes where he had discarded his bag, shortly before the PC spotted him.
Ali claimed to have been transporting the gun for someone else. Ali was sentenced at Luton Crown Court on Friday, August 3, 2018, after pleading guilty at a hearing on July13, 2018, to possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of ammunition. In her closing remarks, Judge Lynn Tayton commended the offduty officer, saying: “He acted with presence of mind and bravery, and kept Ali under observation despite not having any police equipment. He followed Ali, who had loaded firearm, and acted in the best traditions of the police service with no thoughts for his own safety, only thinking of public safety.” Detective Chief Superintendent Sharn Basra said: “I hope the sentence received by Ali will demonstrate to other young people that there are consequences if you carry a weapon. It’s not acceptable to carry a gun, whether you’re carrying it because you are intending to commit a crime or you’re carrying it for someone else. “We’re continuing to work hard to tackle gun and gang criminality and serious youth violence; these are priorities for the force. I’m extremely proud of the off-duty officer who apprehended Ali, as well as the detectives who worked on this case and were able to secure the sentence. Our communities are safer because Ali, and a dangerous firearm, are both off the streets.”
Sex offender jailed after breaching court order A ReGISTeReD sex offender has been jailed for three years and has had a court order extended, after breaching the conditions of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) imposed upon him from a previous conviction. He was sentenced to 16 months in jail. He was also placed on the Sex Offender Register and made the subject of a SHPO, which imposed certain conditions upon his release from prison. In October 2017, Bedfordshire Police received information that Gill had failed to register an address in Suffolk at which he was staying, and had contact with children under the age of 18. He had also obtained an internet enabled mobile phone and contacted a 12-year-old girl via WhatsApp messenger. These actions were in direct breach of the SHPO he received when convicted. ON-GOING DEBATE ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE A1
Alistair Burt responds to SG19’s criticism I KnOW a lot of my constituents on the eastern side of ne Beds, and indeed those who travel on the roads frequently, have great interest in the A1 and its future, and I thought it might be helpful to write a broad update of the upcoming issues. I have spent considerable time looking at the A1 issue in the past 10 years, have attended many meetings, and had senior representatives come from London to discuss the issue. The most recent was in may when I arranged and focused the attention of a cross department team of five Civil Servants from the Department of Transport, and the Department for Housing, Communities and Local Government to come to ne Beds for a two hour meeting and discuss this very issue with local Parish Councils members, Unitary Councillors, members of the SG19 Safety group and other interested parties. We also have a local Biggleswade Town Council member who is the regular liaison for the area with Highways england. The issue of rerouting of the A1, or a ‘bypass’, and the ongoing traffic congestion at the Black Cat are regularly discussed at all levels. We had a Strategic Study in 2014, and a follow up study in 2016. The follow-on study had a revised remit, building on existing work for the section of the A1 through Bedfordshire, but also considering
the impact of the A14 and the potential for the Oxford-Cambridge corridor, of which the Black Cat to Caxton Gibbett planned works will form part. There is also a forward-looking, positive plan between both the Department of Transport and the ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government with regard to infrastructure being in place before housing, something many constituents talk to me about. I do believe the new way of working will be an improvement, with funds coming through local authorities for infrastructure when they have firm housing plans in place. This is also not just about housing; there is an economic and business story for our area, which includes the Oxford-Cambridge route, the possibility of more ‘silicon valley’ type businesses relocating along the route, making for more regional work opportunities, and not just reliant on our area being about radial transport in and out of London. And, understandably, in view of present issues, such considerations for the future must include rail transport. The new A14 should mean improvements to the area – with HGVs being a challenge through such a narrow stretch of the A1 (and through the towns if there is a road accident) traffic will be more likely to go via A428 and the Black Cat, and should take Cambridge traffic
Biggleswade Sports Grass Track event was held on Saturday, July 14, 2018. The event included the Ladies’ National 800 metres race and the inaugural Ladies’ National 5
away from Sandy. At Black Cat the links with the Ox-Camb expressway must work. The consultation has been late, but they are looking to construction starting at the beginning of 2020. We have been guaranteed that if it is delayed, the funding will remain to enable to project to move ahead. A rerouted A1 is still in plan, but we are looking a good number of years ahead yet, and is unlikely to be on the route predicted in 1994. Once the east west expressway is in place, pressure will be reduced on the Black Cat junction, and a rerouted A1 would have a new junction into the A421/A428. Add to this the east-West rail-link plans and there is a lot of work and construction ahead. So what are the key points with regard to our area and the towns and villages on the route through ne Beds? l A14 improvements are underway l A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbett – works were delayed due to a high pressure gas main being found, but looking to the end of the year to start l A1 rerouting – most likely a minimum of seven years before a plan can be finalised that ensures a sustainable route. In the meanwhile Council colleagues and I will continue to work with Highways england, the Department for Transport and the
ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government to ensure a high quality infrastructure and housing programme, that will dovetail in with a future A1 rerouting. I will also continue to work with the local community and Highways england on the far more localised issue regarding our stretch of the A1; I have had meetings and correspondence going back several years over various issues, and that continues. I have asked Highways england to look again at speed on the Biggleswade-Baldock section, as the traffic especially coming north has a tendency to remain at motorway speed, and a possible ‘longabout’ for the Orchard Road section. I have asked Highways england for a timetable to look at these and let me have some responses to share. There are no quick fixes when it comes to roads and ever increasing traffic, but a sustainable infrastructure plan which sees the long term viability of our area, with good housing and more business and industry, has to be the way forward.

Central Bedfordshire Council agrees new approach for future of schools
SChooLS across the Central Bedfordshire area are actively working with the Council on long-term planning for education. With some 40,000 new homes planned for the area over the next 15 to 20 years, it is clear that the increasing population of young families will expect their children to access high-quality education in good local schools. the Council already plans for school places on a five-year basis and the current forecast is for 9,700 extra children to be entering the system over that period. But the Schools for the Future programme is a longer-term, coordinated and strategic plan to deliver the right schools in the right places, to meet future needs. historically, Central Bedfordshire has operated a three-tier model of lower, middle and upper schools. But schools have had, in recent years, more freedom to convert to academies – which are run by trusts and not the Council – or to change their age ranges with more becoming primary and secondary. Central Bedfordshire is no longer a threetier system but a more mixed range of different school types. not only can this be confusing but also uncoordinated change can affect the viability of other schools in the local area. So, the Council has been working collaboratively with all Central Bedfordshire schools and the Department for Education to understand what will be required up until 2035, which is the timeframe of the draft Central Bedfordshire Local Plan.
Schools and Council officers have been working together in eight area-based groups, sharing their own preferences and ambitions in the context of increasing demands. From this work, some shared commitments have been agreed, including a need to continually focus on delivering the best outcomes for children and to work in a more collaborative and joined up way. today it was also agreed that, where schools want to move to a primary and secondary school model, they will be supported to do so. the next step is for the schools to work together to agree a plan for their area and the Council has committed to supporting this change. Central Bedfordshire Council Executive
Member for Families, Education and Children, Cllr Steve Dixon, said: “We are helping schools work together and plan together so that schools’ ambitions to change can fit in with the rest of their community and deliver the right school places for the future. “this engagement has been driven by the need to plan for growth in Central Bedfordshire, but it has also highlighted a mixed and, often confusing, school landscape. however, a clear majority of schools in the area have either already converted to primary and secondary, or are open to exploring a change. So, we’ve made a commitment to support those ambitions and will continue to work with the school community to firm up more specific local plans over the coming months”.

Our advice and information service is mainly delivered by a team of fully trained volunteers and without them we would be unable to provide our service in the way that we do. Our volunteers have different backgrounds and levels of experience all with different motives as to why they decided to join us; for some, they chose to volunteer to add some structure to their week after they had retired, whilst for others, volunteering is a way to develop their skills and something which they can do around family commitments. nevertheless, despite their initial reasons for joining, they all had one aim – to be able to make a positive contribution to other people’s lives and to help reduce similar client
issues from reoccurring. Volunteering offers you the opportunity to gain lots of new transferable skills and for those who are looking for paid work; it’s an excellent opportunity to stand out from the crowd. All of our volunteers undertake a highly respected structured training programme exposing them to a wide range of core workplace activities, including: communication, confidentiality, time management and using your common sense to be able to assist clients in the best possible way. As well as this, they receive dedicated supervision and support from a team of Supervisors and there is always room for personal development. Could you join them? Prince’s Trust at Bedford College
THe Bedford College Group has teamed up with the Prince’s Trust to help young people move onwards and upwards in their lives. Already a proven success in the group via Tresham College in northamptonshire, a 12-week team course has been run at the Bedford College campus in Cauldwell Street, Bedford. Led by experienced Prince’s Trust Team Leader mark Williams, a group of young people worked on a project they titled “Fresh Start”. This involved showing how they and others can move on and take up the opportunities and access to employment offered by further education. As part of the project the Team raised funds for the charities involved with the Hand Up not Hand
Out multi-agency campaign to help the homeless in Bedford. “Some of these young people have witnessed homelessness first hand or among their friends and wanted to do something to help. They worked with official charities especially the Bedford Homeless Partnership, emmaus at Carlton and the Salvation Army, Bedford,” said mark. As part of their activities the Prince’s Trust Team held a fantasy football fund-raiser at the Bedford College campus and later a football tournament at Jubilee Park. They also supported the Bedford Homeless Partnership on a stall at the Bedford River Festival. All of their efforts were showcased at a presen-
tation at the end of the 12 week period at the Trinity Theatre, off Bromham Road part of the The Bedford College Group and team members were presented with certificates. out & about Jools to play at Kimbolton Castle
JOOLS Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra will play at Kimbolton Castle on Saturday 1st September 2018.
Set in the magnificent grounds of Kimbolton Castle, Jools and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra along with some of his long time vocalists: Ruby Turner, mabel Ray and Rosie mae will perform for a guaranteed crowd pleasing show. The irrepressible Jools Holland is best known for his energetic, piano-pounding performer of boogie-woogie, jazz, and R&B and as one of the U.K.’s most popular television presenters. Jools has been touring with his veritable musical army, the Rhythm & Blues Orchestra for more than 20 years. The current 19-piece Jools Holland and His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra consists of pianist, organist, drummer, three female vocals, guitar, bass guitar, two tenor saxophones, two alto saxophones, baritone saxophone, three trumpets, and three trombones. They play to audiences in excess of 300,000 each year, touring all over the world, including Australia, new Zealand, Singapore, France, Holland, and Belgium. As ever Jools’s show always features a special guest in the middle of the show and for Kimbolton we are delighted to have marc Almond. marc was awarded an OBe this year for his services to arts and culture.
Supporting Jools Holland will be Jack Lukeman. Hailing from Co. Kildare, Ireland, Jack is a multi-platinum recording artist, and has not only supported Jools Holland before, but has also performed over the years supporting or alongside: U2, Ronnie Wood, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, John Lee Hooker, elvis Costello, and marianne Faithfull, and has appeared at venues such as Olympia Paris, Royal Albert Hall in London, and The Lincoln Center in nYC. Completing the support line up is up and coming singer songwriter Katie Kittermaster.
Kimbolton Castle is set over 100 acres of mature Parkland and the concert will be hosted on the tree lined mall offering a stunning backdrop of the castle itself. Used now as the centrepiece of Kimbolton School the Castle original dates from around the year 1200 it is most notable for being the family home of Catherine of Aragon from 1534.
The Kimbolton estate hosts many events over the year, most notably the annual fireworks display that attracts 10,000 guests. The venue offers a beautiful panorama, on site parking and a wealth of experience.

Ginger Wildheart Bedford Esquires Wednesday 26th September
Ginger Wildheart is an english rock guitartist, singer and songwriter. He was guitarist in The Quireboys from 1987-89 and a year later formed rock band The Wildhearts. Alongside this he has had a solo career, and is now heading out on the road to support his recent album ‘Ghost in the Tanglewood’ released by Graphite Records in march 2018. “While leaning towards country music, my fairly unavoidable accent means that the songs come off less Willie nelson and more Bobby Thompson, but every lyric is purely heartfelt and every song is as true a
story as you’ll ever hear. This stuff has always been in my blood since I was a wee nipper and it’s an honour to finally get it out for people to hear” says Ginger. This album began life as a Pledge Campaign with all profits donated to The Samaritans to raise an awareness and support suicide prevention and mental health issues – a theme running through the album and close to Ginger’s heart. Tickets are £15 advance, on sale right now from Seetickets.com, or in person without a booking fee from Slide Record Shop, esquires and mario’s Hair Design, Kempston.
