Two olympic Games hopefuls from Luton who both love a fight are putting their full force behind the battle to make their home town a better place.

My upbringing is here and everywhere I go I carry the flag. “My favourite thing about Luton is the heart of everybody and their characteristics. I feel everybody is not scared to be themselves and to speak up and I think Luton is very, very good at doing that. And when times get thick, I feel like we all pull together.” Jordan competes in the Kumite

the moment, and I’m going to speak for the youth, there is not much for us. This coming to the town, I think, is going to open up so many doors for us. And I’m speaking for people who aren’t even interested in football. So, they’re bringing more than just football. They’re bringing Luton together.” Middleweight boxer Jordan Reynolds is a former baggage handler at Luton Airport who has battled and worked tirelessly to achieve his dream of representing Britain, along the way winning two national championships. He also appears as one of the faces on the

Also on the billboard are Erica Byron, Luton Town Ladies FC defender, and Luton Town Development Centre youths Esme Le-Vien and Zane Radford. This was made possible thanks to generous crowdfunding donations, which this week reached £6,000, from Lutonians and supporters.

30 years for shooting
A LUTON has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for attempted murder. Cameron Perry, 24, of Thrales Close, Luton, was sentenced at Luton Crown Court on Thursday, July 13, 2018, after being found guilty of attempted murder at a trial in June this year. On January 2, 2018, Perry shot a man in the communal area of a block of flats in Waley’s Close, Luton, as the victim tried to leave after the two had a dispute over drugs. Perry had initially arrived at the victim’s flat and pushed the barrel of a gun through his letterbox, threatening to shoot his way into the property. After the victim went out to the communal area to meet Perry, the two had an argument. As the victim tried to get away, Perry shot him in the back and he fell down a flight of stairs. Perry then left the scene. A short time later, police were

called by staff at the Luton and Dunstable hospital after the victim arrived. Surgeons operated on him and removed a bullet from his small bowel, which had missed a main artery by 3mm. Perry was later arrested by officers from Bedfordshire Police’s Boson team, and charged with attempted murder. He will now be required to serve a minimum of 15 years in prison before he will be considered for parole.
Jailed for a biking offence
A 27-year-old man who instigated a massive ride out in Bedford was jailed for 15 months at Luton Crown Court on Friday, July 13, 2018, and served with a five year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO). Ben Nelms, of Prior Close, Clapham pleaded guilty to causing public nuisance after being identified as a key organiser of the ‘Stunt Squad’ event in which a number of nuisance bikers caused disruption in July 2017. Over 60 riders took part in the incident which saw off-road bikes and quad bikes being driven across Bedford, causing chaos on the roads during a seven hour period. Police launched an investigation to identify the riders and were supported by the force’s Digital Media Investigation team, who managed to extract files from Nelms’ phone to identify his involvement. He became the second person to be convicted as part of the investigation. Caine Davis, 20, of Stuart Road, Kempston, was jailed
for 30 weeks and given a five-year CBO in March. Nelms was disqualified from driving for 18 months which will start after he is released from prison. Additionally he was served with a five-year CBO with various conditions, banning him from associating with ‘Stunt Squad’ members. North Community team led the investigation and PC Adam Horsman said: “We are pleased that Nelms pleaded guilty, and is now the second person sentenced to prison for the nuisance ride out.”

The winner, was Sara Rodrigues from Braybrook Primary School in Peterborough, who answered an incredible 396 multiplication questions correctly in 3 minutes, said that it all comes down to “practice”. Mrs Jacqui Hepburn, Maths Lead at Wixams Academy, said: “This was an excellent opportunity for us to show-case our school at a regional event, attended by over 20

100,000s of people visited Bedford, many for the first time, for the 20th biennial River Festival
Br
The first festival was held 40 years and every two years since with the scorching weekend of July 14th and 15th being a winner. Christina Rowe, Love Bedford Director, said: “All credit to the events team at Bedford Borough Council, their many partners, sponsors and the public for making this such a fantastic event.
“At BedfordBID our mission was to make sure that this huge marketing opportunity was accessed by town centre businesses and our Little Book of Offers did just that with 5,000 being snapped up by people who will then be encouraged to keep coming back all summer long to take advantage of the discounts. “We also launched our free draw to win a trip to New York thanks to one of our independent businesses Global Travel Experts. This promotion will run all through August like the offers and will draw people into our lovebedford.co.uk and social media platforms.” BedfordBID supported the John Bunyan Boat by giving them goodie bags containing £5 Love Bedford gift vouchers for those taking a river trip. More bags were given out at the Love Bedford stand in Russell Park bringing the total to 1,000. Said Christina: “Redemptions on these vouchers given out at the last River Festival were very high meaning people took the trouble to come back to town which is what we want them to do. They come for the free festival, we want them to keep coming back to the town centre all summer long.” BID zone businesses who made the most of River Festival included: The Harpur Centre who sponsored the main stage and hosted a marquee for their centre shops like Specsavers McDonald’s on the High Street who reported their “busiest day ever” Michael R. Peters who came
down from Tavistock Street to run a charity stall in aid of Bedford Hospital, with the prize being a fantastic fridge/freezer The Flute had no less than three bars selling Pimms and more to thirsty visitors. The Bedford Swan Hotel extended their terrace in to a San Miguel bar and hog roast marquee. Baby and Play secured a prime spot and gave away Love Bedford “lost children” wristbands. Secret Garden from St Cuthbert’s Arcade made it on Sunday to give away balloons to their target audience The new Riverside cinema, bars and restaurants complex did a roaring trade with many of the 100,000s visiting the location for the first time since it opened in September 2017.

Development commences at Bedford Link Logistics Park
LoNDoNMETRIC Property Plc and Graftongate hosted a ceremony on 25 June 2018 at Bedford Link Logistics Park to mark the start of construction of three new logistics warehouses. The event was attended by Bedford Borough Council including its Mayor, Dave Hodgson, and Chief Executive, Phil Simpkins, with other local dignitaries and representatives present. The three warehouses of 106,000sq. ft. 50,000sq. ft. and 32,000sq. ft. will be ready for occupation in early 2019. The buildings will represent the second phase of a wider development at the site to deliver c700,000 sq. ft. of modern logistic space and representing a total investment by LondonMetric of c£70 million. The first phase consisted of the delivery of the infrastructure to the site including a new road junction of the A428, which is now complete. The Bedford Link Logistics Park is expected to create an estimated 1,000 permanent jobs across a range of roles and sectors. Along with a significant number of further jobs provided during the construction and fit out of the warehouses, which become ever more sophisticated. Development Manager, Nick

There was a lot of interest in this site which demonstrates its attractiveness and its very favourable location. I look forward to the completion of the construction work and the many jobs that will be created for local people.”

Family fun for Flitwick Scouts OVER 250 children, parents and carers connected with Flitwick Scout Group have just enjoyed a family camp at Bromham. There was a wide range of activities for everyone to do. These ranged from caving to craft, climbing to crate stacking and tomahawk throwing to zorbing. It was a great opportunity for many of the children and adults to try some new activities.
Toby Druce aged 12 said: “My favourite activities were caving, firing the water rockets and zorbing. I’ve done so many activities with the Group and have gained my astronautics, hikes away, emergency aid and meteorologist badges. I’ve made new friends and learnt new skills such as teamwork and first aid.” Parent, Vanessa Ng-Millar commented: “Thank you so much for a wonderful weekend, the children and I have loved every minute of it.” Adult volunteer, Nigel Taylor said: “The whole weekend demonstrated some of the activities Scouting provides. It was also a great opportunity to engage with the parents and hopefully we may be able to encourage some of them to volunteer to help. Scouting provides opportunities for children and adults to learn new skills that they will remember for years to come.” Beaver Scouts (boys and girls aged 6 to 8) have recently had a picnic in Ampthill Park, have had some evenings around skills, have done some cooking and then rounded off the term with a camp fire at Milton Bryan. Some of the Cubs (boys and girls aged 8 to 10) recently went to Phasels Wood in Hertfordshire where they tried caving, climbing, cresta run, go karts and climbing through a spider’s web. Along with their families all of the Packs joined together to participate in the end of term Treasure Hunt around Flitwick.
Jonathan Smith, Lead volunteer for the Group said: “This is a great opportunity for people to see parts of Flitwick they didn’t know existed and also to talk to parents and carers about what Scouting delivers to the children.” They have also been participating in water sports, visited Shuttleworth as part of their Air Activities badge, some backwoods cooking and had an athlete badge evening. One of the Scout Troops (boys and girls aged 10 to 14) were hosts to a television documentary team who filmed them making and racing chariots. They have also been working towards their World Challenge badge. The other Troop has had evenings on survival skills, had a Japanese experience and worked towards their International Badge. Some of the Explorer Scouts (14 to 18) recently attended Gilwell 24 where the challenge for them was to stay awake from 9.00am on the Saturday to 9.00am on the Sunday. Some of the activities they could do over the 24 hour period included high ropes, climbing, trampolining, bungey runs, disco, films and fairground rides. The Group are gearing up for their third camp this year when approximately 40 Cubs and Scouts will spend a week at Gilwell Park in Chingford. Sponsors, the international company Cordura, has indicated that it is keen to support the college department by facilitating equipment sponsorships and further Press coverage will follow with a visit to the studios at the South Bank Arts Centre. Head of Department Alan Parsons noted: “The success of our students is rooted in the passion and dedication of our lecturers. It underlines the value of our approach to vocational education where skills and craftspersonship are valued equally to the notions of creativity and academic achievement that are often the prime focus for universities. “The success of our fashion students highlights a worrying national issue that we are seeing in the division of learning into either academic or technical pathways. We risk over simplifying our industries into binary interpretations that fail to understand the nuanced relationship between skills, knowledge and creativity. “Here at Bedford College, our curriculum model harks back to the workshops of the Technical Institutes, where students’ creativity and knowledge is underpinned with a self-sufficiency borne through practical skills and the result, as you can see, is a designer who can most effectively meet her client’s brief with a creative solution for future design problems. Holly and Summer were part of a cohort of 16 students studying HND Fashion & Textiles. Those who have completed the two year course now have a chance to upgrade to a full degree with a third year at the Bedford campus, validated by the University of Northamptonshire - thus saving the cost of ‘going away to uni’ but benefiting from a great quality course. Last year students from the Bedford College took 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in the Personal, Protective, Equipment (PPE) category in the national Professional Clothing Awards, beating university students from across the UK. The course also took the prize for overall winning University Said Director of the Arts Toby Clark said: “The success of this course demonstrates how the riverside Bedford College South Bank Arts Centre is a hothouse for talent across the arts. Our students can stay here and gain degrees, win places at the best art schools and universities, or step into great jobs.”

Gail presented a host of achievement awards and gave a motivating speech to the next generation of sporting heroes. Among those winning awards was Georgia Hall for ‘Sporting Excellence’ for Gymnastics, Holly Reader (GCSE PE Student of the Year), Madie Cochrane (Female Sports Personality), Sean Hardwidge (Male Sports Personality) and the Year 9 Athletics Team were crowned ‘Team of theYear’. Many juggle the demands of academic work and studying with long hours training and we’re delighted to be able to honour their efforts in this way. “I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to all those who’ve won medals at this year’s awards evening. I look forward to seeing many more faces at next year’s event and wish them the best of luck for the coming school year.” Wootton Upper School prides itself on offering a wealth of extracurricular sporting, scientific and academic opportunities to nurture the talents and skills of its students – many of which take place abroad. Crackdown on street drinking CoMMuNITY police officers in Dunstable and Houghton Regis have continued their crackdown on street drinking this week. officers have targeted prolific street drinkers in Bedford Square and Ashton Square as well as working with shopkeepers to educate them on their wider responsibilities. To date the local policing teams have issued four Community Protection Notices (CPNs) and arrested one street drinker for a public order offence. Police have worked with Central Bedfordshire Council’s anti-social behaviour team to issue the CPNs, which act as a warning to street drinkers about their behaviour and outline what they can and cannot do.
If they breach this warning they can be fined or face criminal charges, punishable by up to five years in prison. Sergeant Louise Bates said: “The warnings we have issued so far have certainly helped reduce and displace the problem, but we accept there is more we can do to tackle this long standing issue. “we are working with the our licensing team to engage with shops and off licences that are selling alcohol to those causing the problems. “officers will not shy away from issuing CPNs to shopkeepers with conditions guarding against the irresponsible sale of alcohol, and take action if they breach the terms of their licences. “

BIGGLESwADE Ladies Rugby Team have been working hard in pre-season training, as they get ready to make the step up to the league! The new ladies’ rugby union side – made up of a handful of experienced rugby players and numerous rugby newbies - spent last season building a squad and playing friendlies in order to qualify for league status. The hard work of coach Jimmy Caulfield and the team paid off – with the team all set to play in the RFu women’s NC South East East 3 division. “Last season was a very steep learning curve for us, but I was immensely proud of how hard we worked and how far we progressed,” said captain Charlie Field.
“Everyone put in a huge amount of time and effort, and we’ve been rewarded with a league place, which is a great achievement for such a newly-established side.” Biggleswade Ladies begin their first league season with a home match against Harpenden Ladies on Sunday September 9. They will also face Bishop’s Stortford, welwyn, Fullerians, Esher, Deeping Devils, and St Neots Ladies in the NC SE E3 league. Some of the team recently modelled their new team shirts (see photo). “we’d like to thank kit sponsors Cloves Dental Practice, La Vida Hairdressing, HSw Consultancy, Endurefit Personal Training, and Robo570 Information Assurance, for their support,” said Charlie.
“Putting on our team strip and taking to the field for our first league match will be a great moment, and we hope to make the club, our sponsors, friends, and families proud of us.” The ladies’ team trains on Monday and Friday nights from 7.15pm - 9pm at Biggleswade Rugby Club on Langford Road. All standards of rugby players are welcome, from novices upwards. The club also has thriving mens, minis and youth sides and is in the process of setting up girls’ sides for the older girls who are no longer permitted to play in mixed teams. AUGUST IN THE GARDEN – by Milton Ernest Garden Centre
Plants for sunny dry conditions
S I write at the end of June we have already had seven weeks without rain and the weather forecast is saying a lot more hot sunny weather. Although I welcome this like most other people while on holiday it is a nightmare trying to keep my precious plants alive without enormous water charges. I watch that meter spinning around while watering the tubs and veggy patch let alone the rest of the garden. So I am looking to replace any casualties with plants that are more resistant to drought conditions. I also have one area that is a real suntrap with poor soil so I have decided to plant a dry border and get rid of the grass completely which realistically is brown not green from May to October. I intend to plant this border early next spring so I will spend the rest of this year preparing the soil. Apart from selecting plants that will thrive in the sunny dry conditions it is vital to remove any weed, grass or other unwanted plant growth and try to conserve moisture in the soil around the plant roots. I will use rotted garden compost which I make by layering all my garden and kitchen waste, chicken litter and grass cuttings. It is
important to incorporate some soil as well but there is usually enough still attached to the roots of weeds, potato, sweet corn, bean and brassicas plants when the harvest is finished. The occasional sprinkling of sulphate of ammonia helps soil bacteria to speed up decomposition. You can use peat or other fibrous soil conditioners but at a cost. A generous layer of compost should be spread on top of the soil and dug or rotavated to incorporate. After planting I will mulch around the plants to a depth of 10cm with pulverised bark when the soil is really wet to conserve that precious moisture in the soil. The area is backing onto a Yew hedge with pleached Hornbeams so I will leave two meters in front of the hedge and behind the border for a gravel path to allow for hedge trimming and maintaining the larger plants in the back row. The plants that thrive in dry sunny places have either thick leathery green leaves or silver. The silver foliage is due to numerous fine hairs on the leaves which can feel felty to touch. These become whiter as the conditions become drier reducing the water loss from the plant. The dark green foliage of the Yew will be a great foil for the silver leaf plants. Onopordon Acanthium is a gigantic thistle and has huge prickly silver felted leaves and in the second year throws a large branched stem with purple thistle flowers. It is a very dramatic plant which dies after flowering but produces numerous seedlings to replace the original plant. Cynara Cardunculus the Cardoon has great arching silvery white filigree leaves and strong stems bearing large spikey buds that burst into blue thistle flowers. This is another plant drama queen ideal for the back of my border. Between these I shall plant Buddleia Davidii Empire Blue for the purple flowers which attract the bees and butterflies in August.
In the centre of the border Cistus Cobariensis and Cistus Landanifera will be separated by Yucca Gloriosa Variegata another architectural plant with rosettes of brightly variegated leaves. At one end Fatsia Japonica Spiders Web with the large leathery bright green variegated leaves will be surrounded by clumps of Senecio Cinerea White Diamond and at the other end Agapanthus Campanulatus with its gorgeous blue flowers in late summer. There are an amazing number of lower growing plants suitable for the front but I am selecting Euphorbia Polychroma, Acanthus Spinosa, Ballota, Senecio Sunshine, Lavender Munstead, Sedum Spectabilis and Stachys Silver Carpet to give as much colour and interest as possible in a very dry border.
