‘Eleventh hour’ objection from Bedford’s Harpur shopping Centre
Sophie’s simply the Best in Britain
A GROUP campaigning to make Luton a town to be proud of has attacked a shopping centre’s “absurd” decision to object to major new developments.
Bedford’s Harpur Centre this week joined The Mall shopping by Geoff Cox centre in Luton in opposing a mixed used scheme at Newlands existing shopping centres, yet this Park at M1 Junction 10. one is well over 30 minutes away The park would include shops, a hotel, conference centre, offices and leisure facilities with the potential to provide more than 4,000 jobs. It would pay for Luton Town football Club’s proposed new 17,500-capacity stadium at Power Court in the town centre. But in a letter to Luton Council, the Harpur Centre’s manager, Samantha Laycock, expressed her concerns about the two planning applications.
She said she had only recently been made aware of the schemes, despite plans being submitted to the council two years ago, and claimed the plans had not been robustly assessed. She said: “We have concerns with the significant scale of retail and leisure floorspace proposed and the negative impact that we consider this will have to both Luton town centre and other nearby centres, including Bedford.” But Nigel Green, chairman of Save our Town, the action group campaigning to regenerate Luton, said: “It’s absurd that The Harpur Centre’s concern is so deep it has taken them two years to speak up. Yet again, we hear this argument about “the negative impact” on
TWO-YEAR-OLD PLANS
from Luton. “By The Harpur Centre’s logic, The Mall in Luton is surely already having a negative impact on its business by the fact that it is larger and offers a similar shopping experience. “The reality is that the proposals for Newlands Park and Power Court are about much more than retail, so will negatively impact neither. They will offer a smaller concentration of high-end retail which, both The Mall and The Harpur Centre has had years to attract. “Bedford is a wonderful town, but I’m sure their shoppers are tempted away far more by rushden Lakes and Milton Keynes, the latter of which has numerous shopping

Bedford College beat top fashion and textile universities across the UK in a national competition. More than 2,000 students nationwide entered The Bradford Textile Society awards but Sophie Penwright took first prize in the Clothworkers’ Company Award with a printed textile design suitable for both fashion and interior. Her work “reimagined Safari” is now on display at the dye House Gallery in Bradford. Sophie, aged 19 from Kempston, won £300 and is planning to go on to the new BA Hons degree at Bedford College with a view to becoming a fashion buyer.
elisa Bratton, fashion and Textile Programme Leader said: “It is really exciting to see how the HNd course here at Bedford College is providing students with the platform, opportunity and teaching expertise to compete on a national scale alongside the top BA institutions in fashion and textiles.” Said director of the Arts Toby Clark said: “The success of this course demonstrates how the riverside Bedford College South Bank Arts Centre is a hothouse for talent across the arts. our students can stay here and gain degrees, win places at the best art schools and universities, or step into great jobs.”

destinations that seem to sit harmoniously alongside each other.” “Celebrities like Cerys Matthews, politicians, business and community leaders and thousands of people from all over Bedfordshire and beyond can see these plans for Luton will help save our town, with the regeneration that it so desperately needs. It’s about time these shopping centres understood the facts and then supported the will of the people.” Gary Sweet, Luton Town fC’s chief executive, said he was surprised by the Harpur Centre’s recent objection. He told the Luton Today website: “We are surprised initially due to the time it has taken for the Harpur Centre to submit an objection to applications that have been in the public domain for well
over two years and featured heavily across all local media channels frequently during that time. “We are also surprised that they are suggesting Newlands Park would harm their trade. Given the practical distance between Newlands Park and Bedford town centre, the results of Luton Council’s own independent retail trade study showed an impact on Bedford of between just 0.1% and 0.4% after Newlands Park has been built. “furthermore, the figures also show Bedford still taking approximately £50million of retail spending from the Luton catchment each year after Newlands Park has commenced trading.” Mr Sweet added: “We have said from the outset that our applications are focused on achieving the best possible outcome for the whole of Luton and the wider region.”

When searching the car, officers found 11 bags of cocaine in the door pocket of the car, and a further 15 bags within a tin by the gear stick. despite maintaining that he had not seen the drugs in the car in the six hours he had been driving it, and suggesting the bags must have been left by a previous user, Ashraf was found guilty of possession with intent to supply class A drugs. detective Constable Scott Hannam, from Bedfordshire Police’s Serious & Complex Investigation Team, said: “We are obviously very pleased that the jury unanimously agreed that Ashraf is guilty, which means he is off the streets and no longer able to sell drugs. “This was a great effort by the

Police officers attended the property in Challney on Sunday, June 24, 2018, following reports of suspicious behaviour in the area. during a search of the property the team discovered 130 mature cannabis plants and 100 smaller plants in what officers described as a ‘sophisticated and well-run’ operation. 13 years for sexually Pledge to fight child sex abusing young girls exploitation at ‘takeaways’ A MAN has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for sexually abusing two young girls. rhys emmerton, 19, of Kimble drive, Bedford, was sentenced at Luton Crown Court on friday, June 22, 2018, after being found guilty of three counts of sexual activity with a child, and two counts of rape of a child under 13. during the trial, the jury heard how emmerton sexually assaulted the young girls on a number of occasions. detective Constable Kerry Smith, from Bedfordshire Police’s Child and Vulnerable Adult Abuse Investigation Unit, said: “emmerton took advantage and abused his incredibly young victims in the worst way possible. Her Honour Judge Mensah, presiding, said he should have been a responsible adult, but that he manipulated the girls instead. “It is impossible to comprehend the abuse that these children have suffered, but we continue to offer support to the victims and their families. “Child sexual abuse is one of the
most heinous crimes and it will never tolerated in our county. We are committed to tackling these sickening individuals and ensuring that they are made to pay for their actions. “I’m really pleased with the lengthy sentence handed down to emmerton, and hope it sends a stark warning to others who think they can abuse children.” emmerton was sentenced to 10 years for the rapes, and three years for the sexual assaults.
BedfordSHIre Police, together with community safety partners, have pledged to tackle Child Sexual exploitation (CSe) around the county’s large national fast food outlets and local takeaway premises, at a training conference on Wednesday, June 20, 2018. following on from the success of an event that raised awareness for the county’s hoteliers earlier this year, environmental Health, Licensing and Trading Standards officers from Bedfordshire’s three local authorities attended the event, hosted by Bedfordshire Police and You Turn futures, at The rufus Centre in flitwick. The event was tailored specifically towards those visiting premises in the fast food sector, with speakers from Bedfordshire Police, You Turn futures and CYP first. The event aimed to increase the awareness and understanding of CSe when visiting outlets as part of the partners’ course of daily business, and outlined how to report concerns. Pete Gomm, Bedfordshire Police’s CSe Co-ordinator said:
“Takeaways and fast food outlets are popular spots with children and teens, and sadly also with those who wish to meet and groom children. It’s important we work with our partners to target these businesses, ensuring staff are aware of the signs of CSe, and that they know how to report any concerns. “I was delighted our partners attended the conference, and are so supportive.” Lisa robinson, Bedfordshire’s CSe Coordinator, said “Across Bedfordshire, we are tackling CSe together; the support, awareness and response of our community safety partners towards the fast food sector is vital in the fight to prevent Child Sexual exploitation. “Together we will continue to raise awareness and safeguard children across the county.” Andy Thompson from CYP first said: “CYP first, together with Bedfordshire Police, and the local authorities, through operation Makesafe, are spending the day looking at how everyone in the community plays a part in safeguarding children from CSe.”
Crackdown on drugs and phone smuggling in to Bedford prison
A NeW partnership has been launched between Bedfordshire Police and HMP Bedford in order to clamp down on the flow of drugs, phones and other illegal items into the prison. Police officers will be undertaking a series of preventative measures and deterrents to stop the illegal activity and help keep their prison officer colleagues safe. The issue of drugs and mobile phones in prisons has become a growing problem nationally, with new detection measures introduced by the Government last year.
Prisons Minister rory Stewart said: “I am determined to stop drugs and phones being smuggled into our prisons. “They are illegal, they fuel violence, they undermine our programmes of education, and ultimately they threaten public safety. “The launch of this partnership is exactly the kind of relationship we want to encourage between the police and HMPPS, and I am grateful to the police officers and prison staff for taking the initiative. “We will continue to crack down on all
attempts to get contraband into prison - this is a top priority for me as Prisons Minister.”
Police officers are set to conduct patrols around the prison perimeter and during prisoner visit sessions, as well as working closely with the prison’s security team to respond to any intelligence.
In May alone the prison’s security team recovered around 30 mobile phones as well as a significant amount of drugs, all of which had entered the prison illegally.

Homeless’ bikes given new lease of life
BedfordSHIre Police are donating 11 recovered bicycles, for which owners were never found, to Luton Borough Council’s bike recycling project. The project is run by Luton Borough Council (LBC), in partnership with Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire councils, which are working together in order to promote sustainable transport. The 11 recovered bikes, some of which have been in the police garage for nearly two years, will undergo repairs and refurbishment before they will be made available to people across the county. The bikes will be offered to people who are looking for employment across Bedfordshire which they could use one for commuting, as well as to homeless people in shelters in need of transport, or parents who wish to reduce travel cost and time when collecting children from school. PCSo rachel Carne said: “There are many ways we can support people in need. Having a free way of commuting is something which is often underestimated. Hopefully, the bikes will be soon be in the hands of people who need them the most, and provide them with the much needed help to improve their lives.” Councillor Paul Castleman, portfolio holder for Planning and Transport, added: “The bike recycling project gives more people access to cycling who would otherwise miss out. It’s part of a bigger programme following Luton Council (in partnership with Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire Councils) being awarded Sustainable Travel to Access rail Stations funding by the department for Transport up to March 2020. “The programme focuses on the delivery of a range of interventions to promote walking, cycling and bus use to access stations on the Thameslink route between Luton Airport Parkway and Bedford. It builds on infrastructure and station travel and improvement plans already in place to maximise connectivity to employment opportunities and provide access to training and education, whilst reducing parking pressures/congestion and improving air quality issues around the stations themselves and the wider town centres.” Additionally, eight police bicycles will undergo servicing, and will be used by more than 20 officers over the county during proactive community patrols.

Former college sports lecturer ‘tackles’ cancer ProSTATe Cancer is a topic men don’t want to talk about - but one brave local guy Trevor Sinclair is speaking up where others stay quiet. former sports lecturer and schools outreach manager for Bedford College and the University of Bedfordshire, Trevor aged 56, was diagnosed with the disease a year ago. The news prompted him to change his lifestyle for one with less stress and more physical exercise and is now working for royal Mail as a postman. He realised men were not as proactive as women in visiting their doctors for health checks and examinations. With prostate cancer becoming the third biggest killer (overtaking breast cancer) Trevor feels it is important to raise awareness of the disease within the community to ensure people do not have to suffer unnecessarily. “Like many other diseases, prostate cancer can be dealt with effectively with an early diagnosis,” said Trevor. He also went on to say that: “those of Afro-Caribbean heritage are at much higher risk, so it is important to encourage these men to get tested”. Since his diagnosis, Trevor has become a member of the Beds
Prostate Cancer Support Group which meets every month at the Bedford Bowls Club. He feels it is vital to find out as much information as possible relating to treatment options and aftercare etc. The support group falls under an umbrella organisation called Tackle and in keeping with the football theme Trevor and a former work colleague Steve Savva organised a walking football tournament which took place on Saturday June 16th the University campus in Polhill Avenue. The key aim of this fundraising initiative was to raise awareness of the disease and to seek donations to help establish free community based Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing events, especially in areas where men are significantly more susceptible to the disease. future activities will involve outreach work in partnership with local community groups in an effort to continue raising awareness and signposting support for men and their families affected by prostate cancer. https://www.justgiving.com/cro wdfunding/psatesting-bedford is the Just Giving page link for donations. All proceeds will be used to set up PSA testing events in the local area.

Yasin takes a stand HGV drivers urged against cancer to be vigilant after spate of fuel thefts Bedford and Kempston MP, Mohammad Yasin is backing a lifesaving appeal from Cancer research UK for more NHS cancer staff. He attended a special event in Westminster earlier this week to launch the charity’s new campaign ‘Shoulder to Shoulder Against Cancer’. It encourages everyone to stand shoulder to shoulder with the NHS by calling on the UK Government to tackle the chronic shortage of staff who diagnose and treat the disease. for 70 years the NHS has been at the forefront of fighting cancer, but with a growing and ageing population cancer services are struggling to cope with the increased number of diagnoses. In the UK, cancer survival rates are still lagging behind the best in europe and in england nearly half of all cancers are diagnosed at an advanced stage, when they are harder to treat successfully. To help save more lives, Cancer research UK is now urging the UK Government to commit to training and employing more NHS staff to diagnose and treat cancer earlier. Mohammad Yasin MP said: “More people are surviving cancer than ever before, thanks to the fantastic work of the NHS staff who turn breakthroughs in research into vital tests and treatments. “But as the health service reaches its 70th birthday, it’s facing unprecedented challenges. “every year, 2,300 people are diagnosed with cancer in NHS Bedfordshire. With this number set to rise, it’s vital that we have an NHS which is fit to deliver worldclass care for all cancer patients now and in the future.
HGV drivers are being urged to take extra care after a spate of fuel thefts from lorries parked up in lay-bys. There has been an increase in recent incidents along the A507, A421 and other main roads in midBedfordshire of major fuel thefts while drivers are asleep. offenders are cutting fuel lines or breaking into diesel caps and syphoning more than 500 litres of diesel at a time, causing significant cost and disruption for hauliers. Bedfordshire Police will be stepping up late night patrols of lay-bys in response to these incidents, and are also issuing advice on the precautions drivers
“That’s why I’m backing Cancer research UK’s call to stand shoulder to shoulder with the NHS against cancer, so that everyone has the best possible chance of surviving this devastating disease.” To speed up and improve cancer diagnosis and treatment investment is needed in key professions, including radiographers and radiologists who carry out and interpret scans such as MrIs, endoscopists who look inside the body by inserting a tiny camera and pathologists who look for abnormal cells, as well as oncologists (cancer specialists), nurses and surgeons. Shaun Walsh, Head of Public Affairs and Campaigns at Cancer research UK, said: “Today, two in four people survive their cancer. It’s our ambition for this to be three in four by 2034. That’s why we hope MPs, patients and the public get behind this vitally important campaign to help make our cancer services among the best in the world.”
can take to stay safe. Acting Sergeant rachael Welch said: “It’s important lorry drivers are aware of the best ways they can stay safe and prevent thieves stealing from them. “If you’re a HGV driver I would encourage you to park somewhere which is well-lit, near other vehicles and preferably with CCTV. “You could also park in a way that restricts access to the fuel tank, such as close to walls or trees, or with the tank facing the road, which acts as a further deterrent. “drivers would also have better protection if they looked for a ‘Park Mark’ area.”

LUTON TOWN FC UPDATE
Gaffer lands his second top target of the summer in central defensive area HATTerS boss Nathan Jones ended a two-year pursuit of “warrior-like” Matty Pearson when the centre-half joined for an undisclosed fee from Barnsley. The 24-year-old has played in midfield and both full-back positions during a career that has taken in Blackburn rovers, rochdale, fC Halifax and Accrington, where he first caught the gaffer’s eye after taking over as Hatters boss in January 2016. Jones, who has already signed one centre-half with Sonny Bradley arriving from Plymouth, told lutontown.co.uk: “Matty’s versatility is a big plus, but the main thing for us is that he’s a natural defender – an out-and-out defender. “He loves doing the ugly side of the game, he’s a big character, a warrior, a real leader on the pitch – and that’s something that we earmarked. We feel that with the way that we play, we need that and we’ve strengthened very well. “We’ve got some outstanding centre-halves and real variation; all different ages, all different
upbringings and characters and we are delighted with the strength we have in that area now.” After being released by both Blackburn and rochdale, Pearson had no hesitation in dropping into Non-League football as a 19-year-old, signing for fC Halifax. He made over 100 appearances for the Shaymen before joining Accrington in 2015. “Matty is a real man, in terms of when we played against him, he’s one that we knew was a real top player in teams that he’s played in and for someone of his age, he’s played a lot of games, got a lot of experience under his belt – but he’s going to get better,” said Jones.
“He still has so much scope to learn and that’s why we’ve invested in him, because not only is he an excellent player, but he has so much more to learn as well – he’s one that we feel has a really high ceiling. “It’s another big signing for us. We lost two
INVESTMENT
big characters in terms of Johnny Mullins and Scott Cuthbert, but we’ve replaced them with two massive ones who we think will be big players at the level. With the ones we’ve already got here, it adds fantastic competition to a strong squad.” Jones says Pearson and Bradley were his top two targets for the summer – and wanted to explain to supporters why only two new faces, plus Andrew Shinnie, have arrived since promotion to League one was secured. “The trouble is with such a strong squad we have, to improve on it takes real good players who are better than ours,” adds Jones. “We have to identify those, but then getting players out of their clubs is difficult, and we realise that it’s not as easy a process because we are trying to get top-end players for the level. “The stakes are a little bit higher and the quality that we are bringing in has again gone up, so it’s slightly more difficult to get things over the line, but we are well on our way. We set two top targets up and we’ve got them both.”

Lack of support disappoints group by Stephen Allen Chairman SG19 Road Safety Group
IN September last year, we met Alistair Burt to reiterate our requests for him to support SG19 Group’s engagement with Highways england over the long needed bypass for Sandy and Beeston. He agreed that action was both needed and long overdue, promising to write to Chris Grayling on our behalf and to arrange a meeting of all interested parties, including Sandy Town Council. The latter that had for some time, also been trying to get a meeting with the department for Transport on the same subject. In october last year we duly wrote to him and waited to hear further. We waited until february this year when a reminder seemed appropriate. We waited still further until, in a letter dated 16th April, Mr Burt’s office forwarded a letter from Jesse Norman, a Minister at the dept for Transport, which made it clear Mr Burt had only written to him on 16th March. No apology for the delay accompanied the letter from Mr Burt’s office. It seems Mr Burt did not brief Mr Norman properly as in the original letter we highlighted that we had not heard from Steve Thulborn at Highways england since August 2016 by enclosing a copy of the summary we made of Mr Thulborn’s visit to Sandy at that time. Mr Norman suggested we contact Mr Thulborn as if this was a first action for us to take rather than a reminder seeking a response some eighteen months later. It seems pretty clear that Mr Burt has done nothing despite his promises and yet Highways england have made it clear that an MP’s support will greatly assist in our quest to provide a proper bypass for Sandy and Beeston. At the end of last month we received an e-mail from a concerned resident whose son is looked after by his grandparents in Beeston. To take him to the park, they have to walk alongside the A1, with vehicles close by travelling at anything up to 70 mph. This makes clear, on safety grounds alone, the need for a bypass. Mr Burt’s office did also follow up the request for a meeting but, despite six months’ delay in taking any action, the meeting was called giving barely six working days’ notice which meant that not all involved, including myself, could attend as we had long standing, prearranged holidays. To add insult to injury, Mr Burt did not turn up citing ‘other business – presumably ministerial’. Knowing that I could not attend the meeting myself, on 11th May I asked Mrs Burt to provide Minutes of the meeting after it had taken place; I am still waiting to hear from her. It has been said, once or twice in
the local Press, that Mr Burt works ‘behind the scenes’. This may be true but his ‘work’ has clearly been completely ineffectual as it has failed to prevent the Transport Minister from making an incorrect statement recently. When announcing on 17th May, jointly with Highways england, the opening of a £400 million road improvement scheme to the A1 in the north Chris Grayling said: “our record investment to improve our roads is making a real difference to people’s lives – providing quicker and safer journeys for millions of drivers. This scheme will not only save motorists time stuck in traffic, but will also help unlock £1 billion into the economy. It also fills in the missing link to provide motorway-
standard roads between Newcastle and London, helping businesses in the north by opening up new opportunities thanks to better and more reliable connections to the rest of the country.” Such is Mr Burt’s influence that the fact the A1 is not motorway standard between Baldock and Alconbury but is, instead, dangerous and congested has not registered in the corridors of power. If this funding is available, why is he not seeking to get it directed to improving our stretch of the A1? What is needed is positive action by Mr Burt – questions in the House asking when the missing link on the southern stretch of the A1 – between Baldock and Alconbury – will be completed.
It is all very well saying that pressure of work as a junior Minister is a justifiable excuse for the lack of any proper representation for constituents but we regularly see Mrs May reported working in her constituency while, of course, individuals are not elected as Ministers. They are elected by their constituents to represent them and it is to those constituents that their first duty lies. Please write to Alistair Burt, email: alistair.burt.mp@ parliament.uk – or by post: Alistair Burt MP, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA asking him to start providing the support that we, as his constituents, are entitled to be given.

Flitwick Scouts are out and about IT’S been a very busy time for all of the sections involved with flitwick Scout Group. over 40 Cub Scouts (boys and girls aged 8 to 10) enjoyed an action-packed camp at The Quarries camp site in Buckinghamshire. Activities for the weekend included archery, a camp fire, caving, climbing, fire lighting (without using any matches), hiking, orienteering, tent pitching and shelter building. other activities they have been undertaking include, athlete badge, backwoods cooking, foot golf, a safety hike and water sports. Hannah and Lewis reeve, who both celebrated their birthday at camp said: “We had a brilliant time”. Joanna, their mother said: “A huge thank you to all the leaders for running an awesome camp and to everyone for helping to make some special birthday memories for them.” Adult volunteer, Karen fletcher said: “Children involved in the group will learn skills throughout their time in Scouting. As a Beaver they might make a fruit salad or toast marshmallows on an open fire. When they are in Scouts, they will be planning, preparing and cooking their own meal. These skills will help them throughout their life.” The Beaver Scouts (boys and girls aged 6 to 8) have been learning about rugby, making father’s day gifts, and have learnt about health and fitness which included agility activities and making and eating fruit salad faces. They are also working on their skills challenge badge which includes lighting a candle, tying shoelaces and remembering their address and phone number. The Scouts (boys and girls aged 10 to 14) have been making gadgets, lighting fires and
cooking on them, working towards their astronautics badge and playing a wide game. The Monday troop recently had a visit from a television production company who are making a programme about Scouting. The Group attended the flitwick Carnival where they provided young people and adults with the opportunity to climb a wall and also make a paracord person. As part of their Gardening badge, some of the Beavers grew potatoes from seed in conjunction with the flitton Potato race. The end result was Tuesday Beavers won the ‘overall yield’ for a youth organisation and were awarded a cheque for £150. The person who grew the biggest
individual yield was Stanley Behan with Aidan Arnold Mole coming a very close second. Several of the Beavers and Cubs participated in the ‘spud and spoon’ race. The Group have a family Camp at Bromham at the end June with over 250 children, parents, carers and adult volunteers attending. In July over 40 Cubs and Scouts will be camping at Gilwell Park where some of the activities will include grass sledging, high ropes, low ropes, outdoor challenge badge, pioneering, and team building. for further information about flitwick Scout Group, please visit www.flitwickscoutgroup.org.uk

The end of an era: Mid Beds Art Society closure IT IS with regret and great reluctance, that a standing committee of Mid Beds Art Society is organising the closure of this long-established group of art enthusiasts. This very active local society was founded in the 1970s. At its peak around 100 local artists were members. However, after operating with committee vacancies for more than 12 months, when several committee members stepped down this year due to health and other commitments, just two people remained. At the AGM on March 21, there were too few nominations from the 80+ current members for a viable management committee to be formed. An eGM was held later the same evening and the decision to close the society was ratified by a majority of members present. In a statement, the committee said: “We want to thank everyone who has supported the group and our activities over many years
whether by attending our meetings, our workshops or our exhibitions. This situation is especially disappointing for those who have worked so hard for the society over the last five decades. Unfortunately, it is not possible to run our varied programme of activities each year without a full committee. We needed new volunteers for the key officer roles of Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary, as well as more ordinary committee members, and these were not forthcoming. It was a difficult decision to make. We are very appreciative of the many sympathetic messages we have received from our planned presenters and other local groups.” Many of the assets of the society have been sold to members and to other local art groups; there are a few items remaining which may be interest of interest to local voluntary or youth groups. for details of what is available, please contact Val Lawson on 07434 351027.

Theatre of Hate Bedford Esquires following a sell-out show back in 2016 Kirk Brandon brings the original post-punk band Theatre of Hate to Bedford esquires this July. In 1980, Kirk Brandon formed Theatre of Hate from the ashes of heralded punk band The Pack. Joining Kirk on vocals were notable punk musicians Stan Stammers and Luke rendall, along with old school friend, Steve Guthrie and Canadian born John “Boy” Lennard, who revolutionised the band’s sound with his haunting sax lines. Theatre of Hate’s debut double-A-side single, “Legion”/”original Sin”, topped the independent chart in 1980, and “Westworld”, their debut album, produced by Mick Jones from The Clash and released in 1982,held the number one position for 21 weeks. The single taken from the album, “do You Believe In The Westworld?” has become an anthem and is still widely played in clubs and on international radio, as well as featuring on numerous compilation albums. Supporting the likes of The Clash & Ian dury lead to Theatre of Hate headlining major venues across the UK & Northern europe. Theatre of Hate imploded in 1982, with Kirk taking Stan forward to form Spear of destiny, but the band has resurfaced over the years to play some very special shows. Having been asked by John Curd to join The damned for a massive show at London’s infamous roundhouse in december 2014 the band once again joined the

2018’s Bedford river festival will be bigger than ever before, with the festival expanding further down the river to include St Marys’ Gardens. St Mary’s Gardens will host a stage, an arts and crafts marquee as well as a marquee for The Higgins

seeing over a quarter of a million people enjoying this free festival on Bedford’s embankment. As well as this all new area, many of the old favourites are back for this year’s festival with the Carnival Parade, the dragonboat and raft races, the boat parade, music, a wide selection of food and drink, and Saturday night’s fireworks display.
Mayor dave Hodgson said: “This year’s river festival is fast approaching, and it’s exciting to see all the new events, stalls and entertainments that will be on St Mary’s Gardens. This is a lovely and underused stretch of our riverside, and with the new riverside Bedford development across the water I’m sure this will be a popular area during the river festival weekend.”
