ALLEGATIONS OF RACIST CHANTS BY SUPPORTERS – GROUNDLESS!

NatioNal media reporting of alleged racism by football fans at a hatters home game has left luton feeling “unfairly tarnished” yet again, #saveourtown said yesterday.

The campaign group released a strongly worded statement following claims that black Accrington Stanley players were racially abused during last week’s match against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road. A BBC Radio Lancashire commentator claimed he heard alleged racist remarks towards one player, while an assistant BBC Sport producer, who was watching the game from the away end of the stadium, said on Twitter that monkey chants were directed at another member of the Accrington team. Luton Town launched a thorough investigation and chief executive Gary

by Geoff Cox

Sweet said this week that “absolutely no evidence of racial abuse of any kind has been found”. Nigel Green, chairman of #saveourtown, which is promoting the Power Court and Newlands Park regeneration schemes, said: “Racism of any kind must be exposed so it was quite right that police should be made aware and allowed to investigate any allegation, as they continue to do. UNFAIRLY TARNISHED “What is not acceptable is the reporting of such allegations as fact from certain national media outlets. Yet again, Luton has felt unfairly tarnished and we completely understand the strength of feeling among fans and local people, particularly those that were at the game, in reacting to this reporting.”

Mr Green said that while #saveourtown is campaigning for physical transformation that will come from Newlands Park and Power Court, with this also comes the chance to change perceptions of Luton. “We believe our town is strongest when it stands as one, and we are proud of our record of engaging with the culturally diverse communities that make up our town,” he added. “This is a common goal we share with Luton Town Football Club who, with 2020 at the helm over the last ten years, has garnered a track record and reputation for inclusiveness, which has been exceptional. “Their community and charity initiatives and programmes have included regular initiatives with KickItOut – football’s equality and inclusion organisation – and excellent links with Continued on page 4

Policing Minister’s visit to Luton to discuss tackling serious violence

Bedfordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Kathryn holloway, welcomed the Minister for Policing and the fire service, Nick hurd, to discuss the issue of gangs, guns and knife crime in the county at the home office’s first serious Violence event outside the capital.

The PCC and Minister also chaired a roundtable discussion to hear directly from victims who have lost loved ones, as well as from former gang members. Over 125 people attended the conference in Luton on Thursday October 25, arranged by the Home Office with the help of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire. Colleagues from

Community Safety Partnerships including police, health, education, social services and youth offending services were among those who attended along with representatives of communities in violence hotspots around the county, since Bedfordshire is currently ranked fifth in England for the number of knife offences from 2017 to 2018. The delegates were invited to share their experiences and brainstorm ideas on how to tackle the growing national issue of serious violence, “It was important to me that the Minister heard for himself how far we have come in recognising the problem and agreeing to work together to tackle a threat which is taking the lives of our young people. Bedford Mayor’s ‘Recruitment Crisis’ exposed liBeral democrat Mayor dave hodgson has been slammed for overseeing a ‘full blown recruitment crisis’ which is set to cost taxpayers £279k. figures obtained by the Council’s Conservative group show the Council is relying heavily on agency staff to fill vacancies in its environment directorate which includes waste management, planning and highways. as of the end of october, the Council had 94 vacancies in environment with 66 agency staff plugging the gaps, resulting in a projected staffing overspend of £279k by the end of 2018/19. Conservative Budget spokesperson Cllr roger rigby (pictured) said: “Mayor hodgson complains relentlessly about the Council’s funding position but it is time to

look at his own record. “overspending the staff budget by £279k in a single department raises serious questions over the Mayor’s ability to manage the Council’s restructure which it is relying on to meet its financial challenge. “taxpayers are footing the bill for the Mayor’s incompetent management.”

fuNdraisiNg appeal launches to support vulnerable people in Bedfordshire this winter, it shouldn’t be a choice between eating or heating. Bedfordshire and luton Community foundation (BlCf) are an independent registered charity, providing support to local community groups and charities, many of whom are working with some of the county’s most vulnerable and in need. BlCf are launching their surviving Winter appeal to support those who may struggle with food or fuel poverty during the winter months by providing essential items such as blankets, food or even helping people pay their energy bills. francesca Johnstone, head of grantmaking at BlCf says: “We are asking the people and businesses of Bedfordshire to come together to support those in need and help them survive the winter months. for many people it can sometimes be a choice between heating or eating, this isn’t just something that affects old people, but also families and others in need. all donations raised will support those most vulnerable in the community, together we can make a real difference.” statistics suggest that around 700 older or vulnerable people in Bedfordshire die from illnesses related to or exacerbated by the cold each year. older people or those suffering with illnesses such as cancer are at particular risk as they can find it more difficult to keep warm, but for many the rising energy prices means they can’t afford to keep the heating on. on average 1 in 6 children in Bedfordshire are living in poverty, which is estimated to affect around 41,753 households. these families and others like them, with the additional costs associated with the cold weather can mean many parents having to make a choice between heating and eating. BlCf have launched their surviving Winter appeal to raise vital funds within the community which will be used in several ways; including giving small grants to notfor-profit groups working with disadvantaged people, provide winter survival packs to individuals and families living in poverty across Bedfordshire and also help vulnerable people pay their energy bills. BlCf is partnering with key organisations who work at grassroots level to ensure the support is reaching those most in need, the appeal is running between November and March and aims to raise £20,000 to support individuals and families across the county. to donate to this appeal, you can go online at blcf.org.uk/winter or, by texting ‘BlCf10’ £10 together we can make a real difference.

Air Ambulance receives over £5000 from Mayo Association and supporters THE East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) is a local helicopter emergency medical service providing care to the people of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. Since our launch we have attended over 22,000 lifesaving missions saving the lives of many thousands of people. On the 20th of October this year the Mayo Association, Luton held their annual dinner dance. At this event the Association presented a cheque for £2,000.00 to the EAAA’s volunteer Martin. On top of this, nine local men decided last year they wanted to raise money after one of their friends was attended by EAAA. They trained for five months and performed Riverdance at the Association’s event in May. They raised an amazing £3,666.67 for EAAA which was also donated on the night. The East Anglian Air Ambulance has to raise at least £12 million this year to deliver and develop our lifesaving service, and as a charity we rely entirely on the generosity of our wonderful supporters to keep us flying – so donations like those made by the Mayo Association Luton make all the difference. Top: The cheque for £2,000.00 was presented by Patrice Doran, Fiona Hennelly and Anne Barrett. Bottom: The ‘Working Men’s Riverdance’ group who donated £3,666.67 were Charlie Murphy, Jim Kelly, Jim Hannigan, Kieran McGoldrick, Sean Bannatyne, Pat Lydon, Damian Flynn, Kevin Killian and (missing from the photograph) Shaun McElhinney.

and inspirational voluntary sector leaders at the Serious Violence Engagement Event. “The Government is committed to tackling violent crime through our Serious Violence Strategy, which promotes real, long term change combining robust law enforcement and early intervention. “As exemplified in Bedfordshire, the key to success is effective leadership at all levels and multi-agency working. We all have a responsibility to bring about real change and we are committed to supporting communities who are protecting children from being drawn into a life of violent crime.” “I was honoured to meet Minister Nick Hurd at the Serious Violence Strategy event, where we discussed possible ways of tackling serious crime to save the lives of young people. It was refreshing to see how genuinely concerned he is about this issue and the way he approached and interacted with the young people that he met at the centre was simply amazing. The fact that he took time out of his busy schedule to talk with the young people shows his determination to address this very serious matter. Moving forward, I believe that is extremely important for grassroots, statutory and voluntary organisations to continue to work together to support, provide and identify any gaps in services for young people,” said Amanda Foster, Founder of Right Time to Shine. during the conference, attendees heard from the Minister, Nick Hurd, who set out the Government’s approach to tackling serious violence, Bedfordshire’s Chief Constable, Jon Boutcher, gave the local serious violence statistics and Assistant Chief Constable, dr Jackie Sebire, outlined the national picture showing Bedfordshire as one of the most seriously affected areas for knife and gun crime in the country. detective Chief Superintendent Mark Lay

came into this role, just over two years ago, there were local authorities and services working with young offenders who refused to even use the word ‘gang’. I paid for a neutral, third party specialist team from the Home Office, led by an acclaimed detective, to draw together all known information within policing, youth offending, local authorities and others about gang membership and knife carrying to cut across politics. We have three different unitary councils in Bedfordshire, all a different shade of the political spectrum, but nobody can now deny they have a problem as they’ve seen the evidence. “We are working on a strategy around these issues as a result but there’s absolutely no excuse where saving young lives is concerned; this is now not just about joint working but properly joined up working, including with health as other areas like Manchester and Glasgow have rightly seen this as a public health issue and made health the lead, not police. This is one we cannot arrest ourselves out of!” said Commissioner Holloway. during the Minister’s visit, the PCC accompanied him to the Lewsey Farm Learning Trust where Amanda Foster runs ‘Right Time to Shine’, which works with young people at risk of becoming involved in criminality, particularly gun and knife crime. Amanda, a social worker for more than ten years, founded the organisation following the fatal shooting of her husband in Luton in April 2013 and attended the round table event before the visit to share her story with the Minister and the audience. The ‘Right Time to Shine” youth service is funded by the Commissioner. The Minister of State for Police and the Fire Service, Nick Hurd, said: “It was highly encouraging to see so many professionals

explained the issues around drugs and the links to serious youth violence. detective Inspector Mark Pugh, along with Samantha Berry, the operational manager for Luton Youth Services, discussed the continued need for a multi-agency approach to gang issues in the county. detective Chief Superintendent Mark Lay, Head of Intelligence and Serious Organised Crime for Bedfordshire Police and the lead within the NPCC & NCA drug Threat portfolios for the UK drugs retail market, said: “The event was a great opportunity to give an insight into the current work being undertaken by Bedfordshire Police and partners to truly understand drug dependency and consumption in Bedfordshire and the extensive demand drug usage places on all agencies. There is an increase in use of drugs and subsequently, an increase in the profitability of the drugs market. drug dealing is the core activity of gangs and in particular county lines. We need to look to solve the longer term issues and reduce the overall demand. “It is not something we can deal with alone, we need the full support of everybody involved in law enforcement and just as importantly partner agencies to stem, tackle and dismantle serious violence in Bedfordshire.” “What mattered to me is that both professionals working in the field of youth offending and members of the communities which have been most affected came up to me afterwards to say this event was a game changer. There was a huge amount of energy and goodwill to get together to beat this threat and get the message across to our children that carrying a knife and getting involved in gangs is a mug’s game which will either ruin or end their lives. I am hugely grateful to every single person who came and contributed to it,” said PCC Holloway.

WELLNESS ON THE GO

Who will press the plunger to light up Amptrhill after dame Widow Twanky has led the countdown? Following last year’s successful trial the young person to perform that important task will be chosen from entrants who attend one of the town’s schools. Entry forms will be available at schools – including Alameda this year from Monday November 5th and must be returned completed to the entrants school together with a £1 coin taped to the form by Friday November 9th. Multiple entries are allowed but each one will cost £1. the draw – for which Waitrose and partners ampthill have very kindly donated a prize, will take place on Monday November 12th in good time for the switch-on on sunday November 18th.

Bedford Choral society will be performing haydn’s ‘Creation’, composed in the 1790s and a firm favourite of audiences since then. the choir will be singing it in the Corn exchange on saturday 17th November 7.30pm. British audiences should be proud that what stimulated Haydn to compose ‘The Creation’ included experiences during his trips to England in the 1790s. Here in 1791, he was very impressed by what he heard at the Handel Commemoration concerts, particularly Messiah and Israel in Egypt. Back in London in 1794, Haydn visited William Herschel, the astronomer to George III and originally a keen musician; Haydn was able to study the heavens through Herschel’s

great telescopes. The libretto was derived from Milton’s Paradise Lost. Haydn had the idea of publishing the work in English and German and this edition appeared in 1800. ‘This is Haydn’s best choral work’, as far as I am concerned, says Ian Smith, Music director of the choir, ‘and it has some charming and unusual features, including several songs celebrating the creation of animals, and some interesting instruments, a contra-bassoon, for example. It is gloriously joyous and a treat to hear and to sing.’ There are three soloists; Bethany Seymour, Joel Williams and Benjamin Bevan. Tickets are available from the Bedford Box Office, the Harpur Suite, 01234 718044.

HOUGHTON HALL PARK SCOOPS ANOTHER AWARD

Working together, achieving more.

HOUGHTON Hall Park, a historic parkland site in Houghton Regis owned and managed by Central Bedfordshire Council, was recently given a ‘Highly Commended’ award in the ‘Biodiversity and Landscape Improvement’ category at the CPRE Living Countryside Awards. despite its urban environment, the park is a haven for a range of wildlife due to careful habitat management. Councillor Steven Watkins, deputy Executive Member for Community Services - Libraries, Leisure and Countryside at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “Houghton Hall Park has a range of habitats, including grasslands, scrub and woodlands. With so many habitats in a relatively small area, it makes for a rich diversity of wildlife. We are indebted to the Friends of Houghton Hall Park who help us to manage these habitats

through regular working parties. They keep the parkland at its best and ensure a rich biodiversity for all to enjoy. “The park has been transformed to meet the needs of a growing community, whilst retaining its valuable heritage and other unique features. It is now accessible for all via a network of surfaced pathways.” The grasslands at Houghton Hall Park are home to a range of wildflowers, including cowslips and oxeye daisies, which attract insects such as bees and butterflies ranging from meadow browns, marbled whites to large skippers. The scrubby areas and hedgerows are good for birds, especially summer visitors such as blackcaps and whitethroats. The woods make great habitats for muntjac deer and grey squirrels, and for birds such as nuthatches, great spotted woodpeckers

and chiffchaffs. blackbirds, wrens, great tits, robins and song thrushes add their voices during the spring and summer. Conservation activities have included hazel coppicing and using the cut branches to create a fort-building zone where children can use their imagination to play. As well assisting with the natural environment, a group of around 20 local volunteers have helped to create the kitchen gardens whose produce is used by the park café to make homemade meals. To volunteer at Houghton Hall Park, please email hhp@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk. A life of worship and music REACHING the grand age of 101 is no mean feat. Norman Cowley who lives in Bedesman’s House, Bedford, attributes his long life to worship and music. Norman was born in 1917 in Belfast, one of three children two boys and one girl. At the time of his birth young men from across Britain and the world were fighting in the trenches across France with still another year before the end of WWI. Norman was the son of two full time serving officers in the Salvation Army who were stationed in Northern Ireland. The family stayed in Northern Ireland until Norman was sevenyears-old when his family moved around the north of England and Scotland depending on his parents postings with the Salvation Army. He went to many schools, which was disruptive to his education but he had two constancies in his life, firstly the Salvation Army and secondly the trombone. Norman began to play at eight-years-old and reluctantly gave up aged 90. He left school at 14 and worked in a cap factory in Glasgow, the money was good but the work was hard, moving enormous rolls of fabric around the factory. He began work as salesman but in 1940 aged 22 he

joined the RAF and it was during this time that he met his wife Edna, also a member of the Salvation Army. Sadly Edna died in 1973 and Norman moved with work to Norfolk and then Bedford where he lived on Kimbolton Road for 20 years. “It has been a full and happy life,” said Norman. “I have been lucky to have had excellent health and I am still active, getting out and about and have lots of friends. The Salvation Army has been the mainstay of my life and like a family to me. “Music has also been very important to me and my favourite pieces are by a fellow Salvationist Eric Ball which I particularly enjoyed playing and listening to.”

They now employ 20 staff and supply over 100 restaurants, hotels, pubs and tourist attractions in Bedfordshire and surrounding areas and have a turnover of £2.75 million. Tenant farmers win silver in national farming awards A HUSBANd and wife team farming a tenancy farm owned by Central Bedfordshire Council has won a silver awards in the ‘New Entrant Awards: Against the odds’ category at the national 2018 British Farming Awards. dean and Katie Whybrow started out their farming career working on a 1,000-acre estate while building their own herd of Hereford cattle and flock of Kerry Hill sheep. However, the Whybrows always aspired to run their own farm, and in 2013 they started applying for tenancies all over the UK. Eventually they got lucky, and in 2015 they were given a farm business tenancy on Lower Wilbury Farm near Fairfield, an 80-acre farm owned by Central Bedfordshire Council which is close to their friends and family. Manpower has been a problem for the couple, who run the farm with no outside help. Lambing time was especially challenging, as they juggle the sheep whilst caring for their young family, and Katie also has a part-time job in addition to the farm. despite this, the farm has quickly grown to 700 sheep, 40 pedigree Hereford cattle and 50 pigs. They also now farm Norfolk Black turkeys and rear them for Christmas in the farm’s orchard. By advertising locally and by word of mouth, this year they have orders for 150 turkeys. They also sell their home-produced beef and lamb in their farm shop, and hold lambing weekends on the farm that are open to the public. Speaking about the award,

dean and Katie said: “It really means a lot to us to have the community behind us. I don’t think there are many new tenants that have gone into new farms to be welcomed so warmly by the local community. And we are grateful to Central Bedfordshire Council too for giving us this amazing opportunity to pursue our ambition to run our own farm. “We were so pleased just to be shortlisted against some other amazing new famers in the award category, so to win a silver award shows that we are doing something right, and that all the long hours of hard work aren’t going to waste.” Central Bedfordshire Council manages around 4,700 acres of public farmland across the area. Under the Agriculture Act (1970),

local authorities have a duty to meet the aspirations of young people to become farmers. Alongside this, there are wider public benefits to the council owning the land. These include providing greater public access to the countryside; protection and conservation of the natural environment and wildlife; and greater control over the pace and type of development in rural areas. The council’s farms are currently rented to 58 tenants across the Central Bedfordshire area, with a number of farms close to Flitwick, Maulden and Ampthill; to the east and south of Biggleswade and Sandy; and around Arlesey and Stotfold. You can follow the Whybrows at Lower Wilbury Farm on Facebook at @Lowerwilburyfarm

Have you a property related problem? THE PROPERTY DOCTOR CAN HELP Well, the weather is a little topsy turvey at the moment but the only certainty is that we are in autumn and heading into the cold season. Not only is it time to turn on the boiler (as late as possible in my house!) but you need to get your house in order ready for the winter season. Here are a few things to consider: • Clear out your gutters and downpipes during and following the autumn leaf shedding to make sure all is free flowing. • Cut back vegetation near your boiler flue to avoid unnecessary call outs. • Provide some insulation to your outside tap/pipework and switch off inside to avoid bursts. • Provide some insulation to the condensate pipe from your boiler so that it remains functional in very cold weather. • Check your roof verges (edges of roof) to make sure all the tiles are held in place. • Check your ridge and hip tiles to check they are not loose and susceptible to strong winds. • Ensure all your loft pipework is adequately lagged/ insulated to avoid bursts. These are a few basic pointers to avoid easily remedied problems due to cold and windy weather. You are directed to our website (www.cubebuildingconsultancy.com) for a more detailed list of things to review/do before the winter. Get ready so you can enjoy the cold weather!

READER’S QUESTION:

Q

I have recently noticed some damp in my lounge just above the skirting board. Is it a worry? What should I do?

A

Do not call in a damp specialist straight away. Look for some obvious problems such as a) is the ground level outside higher than it should be on the wall; b) is there a lot of water running down the wall from a damaged pipe or gutter; c) are there any leaking pipes in close proximity. Once you have eliminated any obvious issues then call me and I can advise further..

The first three-month closure order was granted for a property in Newbury Road, Houghton Regis. The second order was granted for an address in Bromham Road, Bedford. The closure application was due to partnership working between Bedfordshire Police’s Urban Policing team, BPHA and the Bedford Borough Council Community Safety Team. PC Emily Keech, who secured the closure, said: “We treat all reports of anti-social behaviour seriously and after gathering evidence we applied for closure to the Luton Magistrates’ Court. “As a team we are dedicated to clamping down on anti-social behaviour and we would like to encourage the community to report this kind of activity in the future.”

Laughing all the way to Christmas

Headlining the Jim Marshall Auditorium at The Stables, Wavendon, Milton Keynes, this month is danni Nicholls. The November 10 concert will be her first time headlining the venue’s main stage. danni, a former pupil of Mark Rutherford School Bedford, describes her music as ‘Americana’. So what exactly is Americana? “It’s a melting pot of American roots styles” says danni who goes on to quote Jed Hilly, CEO of the Americana Music Association who says you’ll know Americana “if you can taste the dirt through your ears,”. One of danni’s biggest musical influences is her grandmother, who has always had a love of country and rock n roll “I was brought up on this stuff; Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Elvis. I have mixed some other genres and influences in to create my own sound”. The past year has seen Bedfordborn and based danni Nicholls supporting the legendary Shakin’ Stevens on 28 dates of his major UK tour, opening for Lucinda Williams,

The Secret Sisters and playing prestigious festivals all over the world, the most recent being at The Long Road Festival. danni’s album ‘Mockingbird Lane’ was nominated ‘UK Album of the Year’ and danni herself ‘UK Artist of the Year’ by the Americana Music Association plus ‘Best Country/Folk Artist’ for the Unsigned Music Awards. Bob Harris, Radio 2 “absolutely love(s) the elegance and beauty of her music” with a growing reputation as one of the UK’s leading artists. danni has made several trips to Nashville, Tennessee teaming up with some of the best writers and musicians in the business, to co-write and record her songs. She has released two studio albums so far, ‘A Little Redemption’ (2013) and ‘Mockingbird Lane’ (2015) danni has also made a live album in conjunction with Vintage TV. Her next studio album ‘The Melted Morning’ is set for release Spring 2019. To see danni live with full band and special guests at The Stables on November 10th, book online at www.stables.org or contact The Box Office on 01908 280800

theatre c Avenue Q

Mill Theatre, Mill Road, Sharnbrook MK44 1NP Monday 5 - Saturday 10 November at 7.30pm.

It’s just like your life... only funnier! This outrageous, puppet-filled, comedy musical about a university graduate finding his way in New York City is filled with hilarious songs, innovative dance moves and a rather ‘adult’ scene. When Princeton moves into a shabby area of New York, all the way out on Avenue Q, all he wants

tracks from across their fantastic catalogue. In 2000, Q magazine placed ‘All Mod Cons’ at Number 50 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. The Jam had amazing chart success with 18 singles and 7 albums to make the top 40 in the United Kingdom from their debut in 1977 to their break up in 1982. Their last 5 albums were all top ten hits and their last 8 singles made it into the top 10. Those attending this gig can expect to hear masses of classic Jam hits such as down In The Tube Station At Midnight, Going Underground, Town Called Malice and The Modern World and many more… Tickets are available in person (booking fee free) from Slide Record Shop in the Arcade, Bedford, Mario’s Hair design in Kempston and online from seetickets

to do is find his purpose. But, as everyone knows, life doesn’t always turn out how you planned, but if you have an interesting array of friends in all col-ours, shapes and furs around you… Well, anything can happen! This is a truly gut-bustingly funny and unique show that will defi-nitely make you feel “special”. Sesame Street was never like this! All together now... the Internet is for... Parental guidance is suggested for children under 15 due to its adult content.

The Eskies + Noble Jacks

exhibition

Esquires are very pleased to announce the return of one of their favourites, The Eskies! Having graced the venue twice in the last couple of years, selling out room 2 in 2017, they come to the main stage for the first time! Hailing from dublin, The Eskies bring their unique brand of folk noir/gypsy jazz/sea shanty and swaggering stage spectacle to ballrooms and booze houses far and wide. The release of their second album “And don’t Spare The Horses” on Absolute Record has cemented their position of one of the best emerging artists from Ireland. Last year saw them play over 40 festivals in five countries, tour Ireland, UK, Netherlands and Switzerland as well as being invited to the influential new music festival Eurosonic Festival. Other notable festival performances included Glastonbury Main Stage Avalon, Main Stage Cambridge and Bestival.

A year long exhibition celebrating Polish Independence The Higgins Bedford 11th November 2018 – 11th November 2019: Celebrating 100 Years of Polish Independence – An Exhibition of Polish Heritage in Bedford

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Polish Independence, established after the First World War, The Higgins Bedford presents an exhibition celebrating and exploring the shared stories of Bedford’s Polish community. The exhibition opens on 11th November 2018 in the Great Bedfordians Gallery and is free to visit.

The exhibition includes a film featuring ‘history keepers’ – young people from the Polish community who have been trained to interview parents, grandparents and older people about their experiences of migration, early lives in Poland and journeys to Bedford.

The Higgins Bedford has worked in collaboration with the Polish British Integration Centre (PBIC) and the Heritage Lottery Fund to launch the MYId Project, which has provided training workshops for young people to collect and showcase the stories, artefacts, and photographs presented in this exhibition.

Bedford Borough Cllr Sarah-Jayne Gallagher said ‘This project has uncovered some remarkable stories of survival and adventure that will now be part of the museum archive – a wonderful way for Bedford to celebrate its Polish Heritage.’

Fans of THE FALL & POST-PUNK are in for a treat - The Roar Club & Pad Presents have joined forces again to bring Brix to Esquires. Brix E. Smith was lead guitarist and major song writer for post punk band The Fall and those lucky enough to have seen her support the Jesus & Mary Chain in September last year know this is not to be missed. Brix & The Extricated were formed in 2014 by vocalist/guitarist Brix Smith-Start and the legendary bass player Stephen Hanley. Stephen’s brother Paul joined on drums reigniting the Hanley Brother powerhouse rhythm section. The addition of Steve Trafford on guitar brought together these influential, former members of The Fall. The line-up was completed with the addition of Irish guitarist Jason Brown. The starting point was reclaiming classic songs from the Fall back catalogue, written by members of the Extricated, which had not been played for 30 years. BLUES PUSHED ALL THE WAY BY A GRITTY HARTPURY OPPOSITION by Mark Wood

Bedford Blues ........26 (19) hartPury ...................24 (12)

a last-gasP hartpury penalty curled cruelly wide of the posts to reprieve relieved Bedford who hung on to claim a narrow 26-24 victory at goldington road on saturday.

Gritty Hartpury battled hard and pushed Bedford all the way in a rugged encounter that could have gone either way in a game made increasingly difficult by the filthy, cold weather. It was the third game in a row characterful Bedford had won by two points or less and dual-registered Saracens hooker, Tadgh McElroy, who scored the winning try, believes it speaks volumes about the Blues’ togetherness. He said: “It was really down to the last minute as you can see, but the fight from the lads and the hunger that everyone had in the game you kind of knew they weren’t going to get in. In games like that you’ve got to be tight as a group and as friends. It kind of showed at the end there how tight we are as a group.

“It just shows the kind of character we have in the squad when stuff doesn’t go our way. In the last nine minutes we go behind but we don’t give up, we stuck together and grafted. We just kept grinding and grinding and hard work paid off in the end.” The tightness of recent encounters are bringing all the players closer together, despite the announcement that former Premiership star Jamie Elliott has agreed a move away from the club, with Pro 14 side Zebre, based in Parma, Italy, his rumoured destination. “It just shows the quality of sides in this league,” continued McElroy. “It doesn’t really matter who you play, every week you have to play a good 80-minute performance.

NEVER GAVE UP

“That’s a good thing because it makes us a better team and brings us closer as players and it brings us closer as a pack, as a team and when we get into situations like that and it’s down to the last minute or two we’ve been in those situations before so we’re confident in the group that we can go and do it each week, week in, week out.” And he believes their battle-hardened nature on the field has been forged in training where they’ve learnt to excel in ‘fatigue’ situations. He added: “We work on it in training, when we’re fatigued we’re working hard and working on 80-85 minutes so I think we build the character and the strength of the squad in training – training extremely hard, we always work on different situations when we’re on fatigue and it just goes to show that all our hard work’s paying off week in, week out.”

Hartpury’s maul was in impressive former all afternoon and James Stephenson got the visitors off to an ideal start when he was driven over on three minutes and Luke Cozens was desperately unlucky to see his conversion attempt rebound off a post then the bar. Mark Flanagan and Will Hooley made a good break for Bedford and they took the lead on 10 minutes when dean Adamson’s fine weaving run ended in him reaching out to score, with Hooley’s wonderful touchline conversion making it 7-5. Flanker Huw Worthington was sin-binned for the hosts for repeated infringements and Hartpury took full advantage as a catch-anddrive move saw dan Murphy driven over with Cozens adding a great conversion. Hooley’s penalty midway through the half sailed wide before Bedford levelled the scores on 23 minutes with more great work from Adamson as he fended off a would-be tackle to score, only for Hooley to again miss from the tee. Repeated infringements from the visitors then saw Rupert Harden yellow-carded and, although they defended the subsequent lineout drive well, more Bedford pressure resulted in Josh Buggea forcing his way over

IMPRESSIVE MAUL

from close range on 33 minutes with Hooley converting to make it 19-12 at the break. The second half was somewhat of a turgid affair as the weather worsened and Hartpury got themselves right back into the game seven minutes in when Mike Wilcox’s grubber bounced fortuitously for Ed Sheldon to gather and score for an unconverted try. Hartpury’s impressive set-piece then put them in the driving seat as another catch-anddrive move provided Stephenson with his second score as Sam Leeming converted well. With just four minutes to go Bedford edged back in front as McElroy was driven over and Hooley held his nerve to convert and make it 26-24. As the clock ticked down, Hartpury continued to press for victory and, having sent one penalty to the corner, the next went for the sticks only for Leeming’s penalty to swerve agonisingly wide as Goldington Road erupted in joy, relief and surprise in equal measure. Hartpury forward Stephenson admitted the visitors were disappointed by the ultimate outcome, but felt it had made for an entertaining finish. He said: “I thought our maul had been so dominant that we were actually going to maul them over. But when we go that penalty, we’ve got two good kickers, and it’s one of those things, sometimes you get them, sometimes you don’t. But it’s probably quite good for the spectators because when matches get wet and horrible, most of the time people switch off, but I think that’s quite exciting.” despite the disappointment he refused to be too downhearted as he revealed they had realised their pre-game ambitions. He continued: “I think it’s largely positive because we know we’re not going to be the best club in the league, but we’ve got to try and get as many points as we possibly can especially with Leeds probably going to be resurgent with a bit more money given to them after Christmas. We’ve got to try and look to get every point we possibly can. And from what I hear Leeds have got one point

EVERY POINT IS VITAL

and we’ve got two points so that’s a good thing. “They’ve been in this league for such a long time haven’t they. What we said before the game was we were going to try and score four tries whatever happens, so that will give us one point, because it hasn’t really been working for us with what we’ve been doing recently. “We’ve not been coming away with any bonus points so we’ve been a bit disappointed. Four tries was our aim, we got four tries and a bonus point so happy in that respect, but disappointed what with our set piece we should have got the win there. But it’s closing out games and we’re not very good at closing out games yet because we haven’t been winning and it’s difficult to get into that mentality of closing out games. Although glad to score twice, Stephenson’s focus remains firmly on helping Hartpury to stave off relegation. He added: “It’s nice to get the stats up! It’s nice to get two tries but really they were team tries because I was on the end of a maul but I enjoyed it. I wasn’t blowing too hard today and that was enjoyable too, not being constantly out of breath! It was a good game and I enjoyed it, we came out on the wrong side but we got some points and that’s what’s crucial for us at the bottom of the table.”
