FORMER HATTER FORCED INTO EARLY RETIREMENT MeSSageS of support for Save Our town ambassador and former luton town player leon Barnett have been flooding in from the football family after he announced his retirement due to a heart condition.

The 32-year-old defender said this week that his heart rate reached almost 300 beats per minute during his final game for Northampton Town. Barnett grew up in the Runfold area of Doctors told him the condition would by Geoff Cox Luton and played for Bushmead Wanderers. make it “unsafe” for him to continue training and playing.

Luton Town tweeted on its official Twitter page on Monday: “The Hatters are sorry to hear the news about Leon Barnett a Town academy graduate who has gone on to have a fantastic career in the game! We wish him and his family all the best.” Northampton Town tweeted: “We are very sad to announce that defender Leon Barnett has been advised to retire from football because of a heart condition. As a club, we offer our full support to Leon and his family.” More support on social media came from other clubs that Barnett played for, including West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City and Wigan Athletic. Barnett, one of the Hatters’ biggest football exports of the past 20 years, was featured in Bedfordshire Bulletin earlier this month after he appeared in a Save Our Town video promoting the campaign for Power Court and Newlands Park. He said that Luton Town’s new 17,500seater stadium in the town centre was “long overdue”. Speaking of his heart problems after Monday’s announcement, he said: “It’s a bit of a shock, but it could’ve been worse. They told me if that was a normal person in a regular job they probably would’ve collapsed and fainted.” Barnett played more than 350 games across England’s top four divisions during his 16-year career, the most recent a 0-0 draw against Bury on October 2, and scored 16 goals. He had a device inserted into his chest after reporting tiredness during a Carabao Cup tie in August, and had data analysed by a cardiologist in October after experiencing

similar problems in the Cobblers’ League Two game against Bury. “They downloaded the data and found out that my heart rate was going just under 300 beats per minute, which is unbelievable,” he said. “They said because you play football and you’re quite fit you managed to stay on your feet, so it’s very fortunate that they’ve found it and handled it quite well.” Northampton say they will honour Barnett’s contract - which runs until the end of the season - while also giving him coaching opportunities at the club. “I’m obviously thankful. I wasn’t even thinking about the contract to be fair, obviously it’s a massive thing for them to still give me what I signed up for,” Barnett said. “They’ve been there the whole way through. I’m very thankful for everything they’ve done, so I need to repay them.”

He graduated through the Hatters’ youth ranks to make 70 first team appearances between 2002 and 2007 before he was transferred to West Brom for £2.5million. The player, who runs the Leon Barnett Football Academy, said in the Save Our Town video: “When I was at Luton there was talk of a stadium and people were umm-ing and ah-ing and saying should it be happening? “But you can see the team going in the right direction and Power Court is the perfect place to put a stadium.”

Luton’s #saveourtown has a new website

A gROuP campaigning to see Luton regenerated has launched an improved ‘command centre’ website to spread their message of a bright new future for the town. #saveourtown has been raising awareness of the ‘once-ina-lifetime’ chance for major transformation with the Power Court and Newlands Park plans proposed by 2020 Developments – the property arm of Luton Town Football Club.

The schemes would boost the local economy by more than £250million a year, create 10,000 new jobs and revitalise the town with a host of community, leisure, entertainment and business facilities, including an 1,800-capacity music venue and a new football stadium. A date for a planning decision is still to be set, more than two years since the plans were unveiled, due, in part, to the continued objections of Capital and Regional, the owners of

The Mall shopping centre. But Luton Borough Council’s deputy leader, Sian Timoney, tweeted this week: “Hoping to be able to announce committee dates very soon! Thanks for all your patience in what has been a complex and unprecedented process.” Formed in May, #saveourtown has been focused on giving Lutonians and local people a voice to add to the 11,000 people who wrote to Luton Borough Council in support of the plans back in summer 2016 – a uK planning record. With much of their work publicised on social media, so far, the group has just relaunched its website to act as the command centre of their campaign activities – a move made to reach more people, particularly those that do not use social media. The site – created by local developers Digidoda and available at www.saveourtownluton.co.uk– includes: A latest news section A new, free newsletter subscription for updates straight to your inbox A new YouTube page Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Information on the Power Court and Newlands Park developments A supporters’ page and powerful comments from local people How to get involved (including downloadable campaign material) Nigel green, #saveourtown chairman, said: “When it comes to what’s best for Luton, we are focused on giving a voice to those that matter the most – local people. “The generous donations of supporters have been directly responsible for helping us do this and the creation of our new website is an extension of this passion for change. “Simpler to use and understand, the site is another tool to help us connect with our community and to demand the progress we all want and deserve. “We want everyone to feel part of the movement to transform our town and help put a sense of pride back into Luton, so we’d urge you to have a look for yourselves and share our website with your friends, family, colleagues, or anyone else that loves our town.”

Plus, WIn a year’s supply of coffee by being one of the first 100 customer’s through the brand new set of doors. the Starbucks store will open at 11am – don’t miss out! Samantha Laycock, Harpur Centre’s Centre Manager,

commented: “The team at Harpur Centre are delighted to be opening the first Starbucks store in Bedford! We would like to invite all of the Centre’s visitors to come and join the celebrations whilst enjoying a warm drink and a slice of cake – we certainly will be.”

Samantha continued, “A lot of regeneration and investment is taking place at the centre recently and the opening of the worldwide favourite coffee shop demonstrates the centre’s diversity and attraction to international brands. We can’t wait

for completion of the redevelopment as we are certain it will support the growth of Bedford Town Centre as a whole.”

Dave Hodgson, Mayor of Bedford Borough, added “I congratulate Samantha and everybody at the Harpur Centre for the way they are overseeing their major refurbishment, which is a real vote of confidence in Bedford town centre. This will in turn bring more investment and jobs along with more retail and food and drink options for people, and this is another example of that.”

PCC wins bid for extra funding and gets £4.5m to fight serious crime BedFOrdSHIre’S Police and crime commissioner, Kathryn Holloway, has won her bid for £4.571m in a unique emergency funding application to the Home Office to cover the unprecedented cost of fighting gang, gun and knife crime in the county. The Policing Special grant was raised by the government to £93m in the Policing Settlement of December 2017. The fund has typically covered single events outside ‘business as usual’ for police forces, such as a terror attack, but Commissioner Holloway argued that the cost of fighting a surge in gun, gang and knife crime in Bedfordshire has represented just such a unique pressure on the Force.

“It’s genuinely a first that this type of grant is being paid to us at all: usually only single events which are not part of the usual workload of a force qualify for a Special grant but I’ve fought all year to land the argument that the nature of the gang, gun and knife issues we face represents precisely that extraordinary challenge for Bedfordshire Police. “I raised the argument that the Policing Settlement of December 2017 was inadequate for this Force with the Policing Minister, Nick Hurd, on the same day he announced it almost a year ago. I met him and the Police Funding team from the Home Office in February to lay out our case and ever since then the Chief Finance Officer and I, backed superbly by the Chief Constable, Jon Boutcher, have been battling to land our argument that emergency financial help is an absolute necessity for Bedfordshire Police. “I’m absolutely delighted that the Minister and the Home Office have been listening - as has the police watchdog (Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabularies and Fire and Rescue Services) HMICFRS, who have to recommend that a bid is accepted, and that my bid for £4.571m is to be granted in full.

“This will cover the entire cost of Op Boson, the Force’s specialist response to gang, gun and knife crime, which has placed an unprecedented strain on us over the past two years, together with the spend on this area calculated for this financial year,” said the PCC. Chief Constable Jon Boutcher said: “This is fantastic news for Bedfordshire Police and will pay the Force back some of the additional costs we have had to pay to respond to those serious and complex issues, including guns, gangs and knife-crime, that we are not currently adequately financed to deal with. “The funding issues faced by this Force are no secret and we have worked hard to highlight the issues of being a rurallyfunded force having to deal with complex crime challenges usually seen in large metropolitan areas. “Nationally, policing is facing broader and more complex demand that it has ever seen before. I hope this is an indication of the recognition of the support that national policing desperately requires.” Bedfordshire Police’s Chief Finance Officer, Phil Wells, worked closely with the Home Office throughout 2018 to provide evidence to support the PCC’s argument concerning the unique challenge which fighting gun, gang and knife crime is representing for the Force. The emergency bid will not end Bedfordshire Police’s financial woes as it covers money which has already largely been spent but it does protect the Force from an overspend this financial year. “It gives me breathing space with the budget as we had been heading for a substantial overspend. It does not mean that I will let up on my argument either in public or private - over our core funding position, both before the announcement next month of our 2019/20 budget (together with that for other forces) and beyond,” said Commissioner Holloway. “If the settlement for next year falls short of the £10m per annum I have evidenced fully that Bedfordshire Police needs and I am given the flexibility to

raise the precept without spending approximately £1 million on a referendum, I will not hesitate to do so to make up the difference. “I am determined to do all that I possibly can as Bedfordshire’s PCC to get funding for the 300 officers and 80 detectives that we have provided evidence to the Home Office that we need to bring us to a level which is simply comparable with forces facing the same challenges and to support our officers and staff in everything that they do for the public in Bedfordshire. “But it’s very good to be sharing some positive financial news for once as this could have been a Black Friday announcement for Bedfordshire Police and instead it’s been a very welcome Christmas present!” she said. The Commissioner also praised the work of the county’s MPs in supporting her in making Bedfordshire Police’s case to Ministers on a cross party basis. “The South West Bedfordshire MP Andrew Selous has been outstanding in his ongoing efforts to draw attention to the plight of Bedfordshire Police, whose funding and officer numbers are simply inadequate for the very serious crime challenges it faces including the third highest terror threat in the country, serious organised crime imported from London and overseas via the M1 and A1, national rail services and Luton Airport and very significant gun supply and county line drug dealing activity to and from the capital. Nadine Dorries, in Central Bedfordshire, and Alistair Burt in North Bedfordshire have also kept attention on the issue with the Policing Minister, Home Secretary and now Chancellor. “Bedford Labour MP Mohammad Yasin asked a question in the House about my Special grant bid and Kelvin Hopkins in Luton also wrote on my behalf to the Policing Minister. I’m enormously grateful to every one of them for their support on a cross party basis, which is one thing which I believe helped to make Bedfordshire’s argument

stand out. “We now just need to wait until next month to see whether the Chancellor was also listen-

ing and whether he understands the absolutely genuine case for funding assistance for Bedfordshire Police moving

forward and that this is contained in the new Policing Settlement,” said Commissioner Holloway.”

Men jailed after Luton man gets 14 years Special Constable for sex abuse offences uncovers village cannabis farm TWO men have been sentenced to nine months in prison after pleading guilty to the cultivation of cannabis at an address in South grove, Wymington, following the discovery of more than 200 cannabis plants. Stiliano Zeu, 26, and Dhimiter Cinari, 24, both of no fixed address, pleaded guilty at Luton Crown Court on Tuesday,November 20. 2018, after an investigation revealed the pair had been abstracting electricity to power what officers described to be a sophisticated set up. Special Constable Ash Harris made the discovery after acting on intelligence from the community. While in the process of applying for a warrant for the property he received information that the men were at the location and, together with support from PCSO Max Dalton, detained both men. The address had been kitted out with a large amount of lighting, heating and ventilation equipment. Zeu and Cinari had bypassed the electricity meter to grow 116 mature

cannabis plants, varying in height between four to six feet, and approximately 125 smaller sapling cannabis plants. Special Constable Ash Harris said: “Over 200 plants were discovered and disposed of before they reached the drugs markets after responding to community concerns. We hope this acts as a deterrent to others and shows that crime does not pay.” Detective Constable guy SteelJessop who led the investigation said: “Drugs have a huge adverse effect on our communities and we are committed to tackling those involved in the supply. “These men also endangered their own lives, and those of others, by irresponsibly bypassing the electricity supply in the property. “This was a well-run operation and I am pleased the pair have been brought to justice. We won’t tolerate the possession or supply of drugs in our county and we urge anyone with any concerns about such activity in their area to report it to us.”

Blue Badge conviction for Care Home Manager A LOCAL care home deputy manager has been ordered to pay £800 after pleading guilty to misusing a Blue Badge, which belonged to a resident of the care home. During the hearing at Luton Magistrates Court on the 6th November 2018, the court heard how Lisa Burnapp, of Boxgrove Priory, Bedford parked in a designated disabled bay in Allhallows in Bedford Town Centre after dropping a colleague off in town to run some errands. She had parked displaying a Blue Badge belonging to a resident of the care home where she works, without the badge holder having travelled with them. The Court also heard that this was the second time Lisa Burnapp had been prosecuted for Blue Badge offences, following an earlier

conviction in 2015 for fraudulently amending the expiry date on a Blue Badge belonging to the care home. In passing sentence the Court ordered that Lisa Burnapp pay a fine of £500, with a victim surcharge of £50 and pay £250 in costs. Cllr Michael Headley, Portfolio Holder for Finance at Bedford Borough Council said “It is an offence to misuse a Blue Badge, and takes parking spaces away from those who need them. “The Blue Badge scheme exists to help those with mobility issues, and the Council will continue to enforce against those who commit Blue Badge fraud.” If you know someone committing Blue Badge Fraud you can report them via the Council’s website or by emailing Fraud@bedford.gov.uk

Manton Lane footbridge returns MAYOR Dave Hodgson has announced that as part of comprehensive traffic decongestion plans a new footbridge will be installed over Manton Lane in Bedford. A previous footbridge was replaced over ten years ago with a pedestrian crossing in an infamous move by the former County Council, despite the fact that the location already suffered from severe traffic congestion on a daily basis. Local Councillors and local residents argued strongly at the time that the removal of the bridge would exacerbate the congestion at this notorious traffic hotspot. Sure enough, as local motorists know, the loss of the bridge did indeed prove to worsen congestion in this notori-

ous area for peak-time traffic. Now, as part of a range of measures in the area to tackle the congestion suffered daily by motorists under the Transporting Bedford 2020 Programme, the Council will install a new footbridge, removing a contributory factor in the build-up of traffic. Other works planned across the three key junctions in this area including extra capacity, remodelling of the roundabouts and more. Construction of the footbridge is subject to planning permission and completion of an agreement with the Harpur Trust, which runs Bedford Modern School on either side of the road. The bridge is scheduled to be installed in the early part of 2020.

Silhouette statue presented Leighton Buzzard drug dealers get more than six years jail to St Paul’s Church

the Bedford club has presented St Paul’s church with a silhouette statue commemorating a World War One soldier. Part of the national ‘there but not there’ campaign, sponsored amongst others by general Sir richard dannatt and in association with Help for Heroes and the British legion. this six foot cut out aluminium version of the ‘there but not there’ logo is a poignant image embodying the theme of remembrance. Pictured here by the church’s War Memorial is Steve Spring who organised the fundraising dinner to raise £750 for Bedford club to purchase

the statue for the people of Bedford. He stands to the left of the statue. to his left are the reverend canon Kevin goss, vicar of St Paul’s, and to his left the two churchwardens, James Stevenson and alison Phillipson. cllr david Fletcher stands to the far right next to other members of the club. St Paul’s shares with many other churches and public venues across the UK eg: St Pancras and the tower of london, the privilege of displaying one of these soldiers, part of the installation to support war veterans today.

TWO men caught supplying Class A drugs in Leighton Buzzard have been sentenced to more than six years behind bars. Mohammed Rauf, of Richmond Road, Leighton Buzzard, was sentenced to three-and-a-half-years in prison after pleading guilty to supplying numerous drug deals in the town between May and September 2018. David Nembhard, of Marble Drive, Brent Cross, also received a three-year sentence following the proactive operation by our Serious and Organised Crime unit (SOCu). Rauf and Nembhard, both

Mohammed Rauf

29, were seen conducting various drug deals of crack cocaine and heroin across Leighton Buzzard over the summer. Nembhard made use of quality hire cars to travel from his home to Leighton Buzzard to deal the Class A drugs. Both were arrested as part of a coordinated series of raids targeting the drugs supply network in September. At Nembhard’s address, officers found around £3,500 in cash, some cocaine hidden in shoes, digital scales and numerous pairs of designer trainers. At Rauf’s address, officers found more than £4,000 in cash and around 80 wraps of Class A drugs, which were found in a Skittles sweet tub within a coat. Detective Inspector Justin Dipper, from our SOCu, said: “Our investigation established that Nembhard and Rauf were pivotal players in the supply of Class A drugs around Leighton Buzzard. “Drugs underpin much of the serious and organised crime we see in Bedfordshire and it is vital that we tackle those involved in their supply. We know conflict between drug dealer networks can lead to incidents of violence which impacts

the community, as well as the families involved. “Communities across Bedfordshire should be reassured we will take action whenever possible against all levels of drug supply, and seek the public’s support in gathering information about those who profit from this crime.”

This month major drug dealers in Bedfordshire have been sentenced to around 140 years behind bars, with the force and colleagues from the Eastern Region Special Operations unit (ERSOu) continuing to crackdown on organised crime.

Central Beds schools on their way to Lapland

Benefits of Exercise Exercise can reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer by up to 50% and lower your risk of early death by up to 30%. Research shows that physical activity can also boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stress, depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

PuPILS across Central Bedfordshire will soon be on their way to Lapland to visit Santa, via a virtual journey that promotes walking, scooting and cycling to school. The ‘Santa Challenge’ is an interschool competition that will run from 26 November to Friday 7 December. It is being funded by Central Bedfordshire Council’s ‘STARS project’ and organised by sustainable transport charity Sustrans. Over 8,500 children across Central Bedfordshire have signed up to take part in this year’s 10-day challenge. The challenge gives pupils the opportunity to learn about the towns, cities, people and Christmas traditions of the countries that they’ll visit along the way. It also provides pupils and schools with information about how to be safe and confident during winter journeys. using a special record card, pupils and their parents can accumulate miles each time they cycle, scoot or walk to school, and get double miles if a parent cycles too. The journeys will then be added up to see whether each school has covered the 2,000 miles needed to reach Lapland from Central Bedfordshire. Sustrans officers have already been explaining to pupils how easy it is to keep walking, scooting and cycling throughout the winter. All pupils that take part will be in with a chance of winning a ‘Frog Bike’, lightweight aluminium

It’s medically proven that people who do regular physical activity have: • • • • • • • • •

up to a 35% lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke up to a 50% lower risk of type 2 diabetes up to a 50% lower risk of colon cancer up to a 20% lower risk of breast cancer a 30% lower risk of early death up to an 83% lower risk of osteoarthritis up to a 68% lower risk of hip fracture a 30% lower risk of falls (among older adults) up to a 30% lower risk of depression

up to a 30% lower risk of dementia

To stay healthy, adults should try to be active daily and aim to achieve at least 150 minutes of physical activity over a week through a variety of activities. The easiest way to get moving is to make activity part of everyday life, like walking or cycling instead of using the car to get around. However, the more you do, the better. Taking part in activities such as sports and exercise will make you even healthier.

bikes specially designed for kids. Other prizes will also be distributed to schools for teachers to give out to participating pupils, including assorted bikerelated goody bags. Sustrans Schools and Communities Officer, Alister Barclay said: “Many schools made it to Lapland last year. Combining the miles from all the journeys made across Central Bedfordshire, we also travelled over four times around the world. This year, with a number of new schools joining in, we hope to get even further. “Studies show that active travel to school boosts school test performance, and our surveys show that most children would prefer to get to school this way. We want to show that walking, scooting and cycling to school can be a year-round thing for everyone.” Councillor Ian Dalgarno, Executive Member for Community Services at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “This is the 5th time we’ve funded this Santa Challenge. It’s a humorous initiative that can bring serious benefits. As well as the health impacts of encouraging families to get more exercise by walking, cycling or scooting to school, it can also benefit the whole community by helping to reduce congestion, and therefore improving air quality. Children are advised to have some exercise everyday, and this challenge is a really fun and easy way to achieve this.”

More than 700 young musicians applied for a coveted place in the orchestra, all playing at post-grade 8 standard. the panel were impressed with tarek’s playing and ensemble skills and felt that he had the ability to make a significant contribution to the Orchestra which comprises 164 of the best young players from the UK aged 14-19. tarek secured one of only 18 places in the cello section which is an extraordinary accomplishment. tarek will now take part in residential rehearsal courses followed by concerts playing under some of the world’s finest conductors in some of the most prestigious venues in the UK. the orchestral training and preparation offered by nyO is second to none. all nyO musicians also take a leadership role within the nyO Inspire programme at the heart of which is the power of peer inspiration and learning. they share their musical skills with other teenage musicians and help them to develop orchestral playing. tarek was inspired to audition after seeing nyO perform Bernstein’s Symphonic dances from West Side Story earlier in the year. as well as being a member of the BMS orchestra, choirs and ensembles tarek has also played with the chineke! Junior Orchestra, a youth orchestra formed of black and minority ethnic (BaMe) musicians, aldeburgh young Musicians and Britten Sinfonia academy. director of Music at BMS, John Mower, said: “this will be a life-changing musical experience for tarek requiring a great deal of commitment and a lot of his time, but we are sure it as a challenge he will relish. We are delighted for him and very proud of all he has achieved.”

Bedford MP Mohammad Yasin shortlisted for national charity award

MOHaMMad yasin MP has been shortlisted for a national charity award by blood cancer charity anthony nolan. the MP for Bedford has been nominated in the category of Political Supporter of the year for his support for the charity over the last year and was recognised at the anthony nolan Supporter awards (anSas) on thursday evening. the anSas are held annually to celebrate, recognise and thank the outstanding supporters who keep the pioneering blood cancer charity moving forward. Mr yasin will be joined by campaigners, fundraisers, volunteers, lifesaving stem cell donors and celebrities at the ceremony at the tower of london on thursday 22 november. Over the last year Mr yasin has supported anthony nolan in a number of ways, from promoting their education programme, the Hero Project, in his constituency to leading a debate on black, asian and minority ethnic blood, stem cell and organ donation. His tireless work has helped put the issue of donation from people with a range of backgrounds – particularly the need for better education in schools – on the political agenda. Mr yasin said: “It is a real honour to be shortlisted for this award and a privilege to be able to use my position as an MP to raise awareness of stem cell donation among people from ethnic minority backgrounds because no person should be faced with the prospect of being told that they have no match on the register. “ I was inspired by last year’s fundraiser of the year award winner, Bedford’s Poonam Shah who turned the tragic loss of her husband to blood cancer into a force of hope and inspiration for others. after hearing her story, I was determined to take action to deliver the message that we urgently need more people from Black, asian and minority ethnic

(BaMe) backgrounds to sign up to the register. none of us know when we might need such help. “Since then, schools and other people in Bedford have been brilliant, organising blood stem cell drives and raising awareness around blood cancer and what it means to join the stem cell register especially dKMS Beds who organised a fantastic appeal to help Kaiya, the five year old girl fighting a rare and aggressive form of leukaemia, who has since found her matching blood stem cell donor. “I can’t thank everyone enough for the support they have given to this vital cause.” Henny Braund, chief executive of anthony nolan, says: “congratulations to Mohammad yasin MP on being shortlisted in the 2018 anthony nolan Supporter awards. every day at least five people begin their search for a matching unrelated stem cell donor to treat their blood cancer or blood disorder. We’re incredibly lucky to have so many people supporting anthony nolan’s vital work to find a match for everyone in need of a lifesaving transplant. “We want to say a massive thank you, and congratulations, to Mr yasin for his support this year and we are looking forward to celebrating with him at the tower of london.’ anthony nolan uses its register to match potential stem cell donors to blood cancer patients in desperate need of a stem cell transplant. It also carries out vital research to make stem cell transplants more successful and supports patients through their transplant journey. SEMLEP to overhaul its ‘growing business’ directive to help drive regional growth A NEW single business support brokerage and diagnostic service, merging Velocity and Northamptonshire growth Hubs will improve support on offer for businesses South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP) - the government created, business-led partnership between public and private sector, charged with driving economic growth in the South East Midlands - is to restructure its ‘growing Business’ programme from 1st January 2019 to better serve enterprises as part of its drive to create the best environment to start-up and grow a business. governed by a business-led board, SEMLEP has a central role in determining local economic priorities and securing investment to support business innovation and growth. This is achieved

through its ‘growing Business’, ‘growing People’ and ‘growing Places’ workstreams, which link public and private sectors with academia to drive productivity, job creation and long-term sustainable and inclusive economic growth. Improving and developing its support for businesses in the area, SEMLEP is to restructure its ‘growing Business’ arm, with the creation of a single growth Hub, bringing together the current Velocity and Northamptonshire growth Hubs, which operate across the SEMLEP region. The new service will be the go-to place for business support in the South East Midlands, offering a single entry point for enterprises looking for help and advice around innovation and growth. The single growth Hub will

work proactively with private and public sector organisations to signpost businesses to the organisations with the best skill set to diagnose and solve any challenges they face. This new operating model will ensure businesses have access to the very best support aligned with their needs, while offering a more efficient experience.

£5 MILION FUND It’s hoped that the new growth Hub will also deliver a new £5million European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) project, which has been created to deliver enhanced funding and support for Scale-up businesses who have the potential for significant expansion in the immediate future. Confirmation of this new project is

expected early in the new year. Announcing the changes to the ‘growing Business’ workstream, Hilary Chipping, Chief Executive of SEMLEP, said: “It is vital that we regularly review the needs of businesses and align those with the support available from public and private sector organisations to ensure we continue to offer the very best assistance to enterprises looking to start, grow and innovate. “In line with our Strategic Economic Plan and our emerging Local Industrial Strategy, we have reviewed our ‘growing Business’ workstream and concluded that we better support enterprises through the creation of a single brokerage service that will signpost businesses to the very best support in multiple areas. “I’m excited to be announcing these

changes and look forward to continuing to work with the talented, driven and ambitious enterprises within the South East Midlands to drive economic growth.” Malcolm Johnson, SEMLEP growth Hub manager, added: “We know from speaking with thousands of businesses each year how beneficial they find our business support services and how our growth Hubs play a critical role in unlocking barriers to growth and innovation. “This move enables us to enhance the support we are offering businesses, building on the fantastic work that has been done at Velocity and Northamptonshire growth Hubs and taking this to the next level in partnership with public and private sector organisations.”

of IT experts currently in Year 11; Kian Pallister, Nathanael Holman, Vukasin Vukesevic, Lewis Wilsher and Kames Knox; to produce a payload which could communicate with the team following its launch and take images of the earth as made its journey through space. The huge weather balloon filled with helium was launched and landed safely in between Norwich and great Yarmouth, in a field near Moulton St Mary. On reaching the earth’s stratosphere, the balloon had expanded then burst, the parachute attached to the payload allowed a safe drop back to the earth’s surface. Headteacher Mr Millard said: “Such opportunities are invaluable enrichment programmes that promote the next generation of STEAM Scholars. We thank our business sponsors Lockheed Martin and Stomor Engineering.”

Scandinavian teachers visit Bedford school

PRIMARY pupils had the opportunity to ask about schools in Denmark and Finland when a group of teachers visited Livingstone Primary School recently. The teachers came to the school as part of the Erasmus Project, a collaboration project looking at 3T’s (Time, talent and technology) and how each country develops them. They spent several days in the school watching lessons, teaching, shadowing staff and talking to pupils. They met the school council who asked lots of questions about the differences between their schools and Livingstone and what they liked and if they had any ideas that they would like to take back to Denmark and Finland.

Head Teacher Peter Thornes said: “It’s really exciting for our pupils to get to meet teachers from other countries and have some quality time talking about the cultural differences in our systems. They had some very incisive questions and I know our Danish and Finnish colleagues were impressed with the depth of knowledge our pupils have. We are looking to give the Livingstone pupils more chances to expand and test their pupil voice” Four schools Bedford are part of the project, Castle Newnham, Westfield School, Biddenham School, and Livingstone Primary. Teachers from Bedford have also visited Denmark and Finland to look at the innovative practices in their schools.

ON Friday, November 9, at 10.50 am the Spaceflight team at Mark Rutherford School, ably assisted by engineering expert graham Kirkby from Airbus, launched its first ever space mission. The aim was to send a payload into the Earths stratosphere on the edge of space around 35km up to take video and photos of the Earth below. Funded by generous donations from Lockheed Martin and Stomor Engineering, the project has taken 10 months to complete, driven by the enthusiasm and passion of a small group of intrepid space explorers. The project was the brainchild of Mark Rutherford School’s first ever female Arkwright Scholar, Beatriz Soriano Tortosa in Year 12 who, together with fellow enthusiasts Tania Frant and Tabby Richards, started the Spaceflight club which takes place every Monday after school. A year long exhibition celebrating Polish Independence The Higgins Bedford 11th November 2018 – 11th November 2019: Celebrating 100 Years of Polish Independence – An Exhibition of Polish Heritage in Bedford

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Polish Independence, established after the First World War, The Higgins Bedford presents an exhibition celebrating and exploring the shared stories of Bedford’s Polish community. The exhibition opens on 11th November 2018 in the great Bedfordians gallery and is free to visit. The exhibition includes a film featuring ‘history keepers’ – young people from the Polish community who have been trained to interview parents, grandparents and older people about their experiences of migration, early lives in Poland and journeys to Bedford. The Higgins Bedford has worked in collaboration with the Polish British Integration Centre (PBIC) and the Heritage Lottery Fund to launch the MYID Project, which has provided training workshops for young people to collect and showcase the stories, artefacts, and photographs presented in this exhibition. Bedford Borough Cllr Sarah-Jayne gallagher said ‘This project has uncovered some remarkable stories of survival and adventure that will now be part of the museum archive – a wonderful way for Bedford to celebrate its Polish Heritage.’

The Amorettes + Naked Six Bedford Esquires – Holy Molys Saturday 24th November, doors at 8pm

Whilst today’s popular music world seems to be based around the idea of “style over substance”, Scottish Hard Rock Trio, The Amorettes, have a very simple plan; Taking over the world, one show at a time! No fuss! No gimmicks! Just good, old-fashioned hard work, and great songs. Anyone who’s ever experienced an Amorettes live show can easily testify to the buzz of expectation that kicks in as soon the lights go down, and the intro rolls. Never has the Slade track, We’ll bring the house down been so prophetic in its meaning. The roar from the crowd builds expectation from the very start, and the energy and intensity doesn’t let up until we reach the end together.

Witness the audience sing-a-long during the anthemic set closer, Hot And Heavy, a track always preempted by vocalist/guitarist, gill Montgomery asking the sweat soaked audience, “Is Everybody Hot? Do You Like It HEAVYYY?” It’s not just all down to Montgomery though, Drummer Hannah McKay, who is considered to be one of the best young, drummers on the music scene today, uses her full kit to deliver knock-out blows to each and every member of the audience. Try and hide as much as you like, there is no escape from her drumming fury. Likewise, Bass player Heather McKay is a sight to behold on stage, banging out her rock-solid rhythms whilst prowling the stage like a Tiger, her long hair flailing in the lights as her head does not stop moving even for a second. Having what is arguably the tightest rhythm section on today’s rock scene behind her allows Montgomery to showcase her powerful vocals whilst also tearing off riff after riff, and solo after solo with

ease. Relentless touring across the uK and Europe has turned The Amorettes into a lean, mean, Rock and Roll machine, leading them to be described as “Like Airbourne fronted by Joan Jett”. Reviews for both live shows, and the albums, only reinforce the fact that The Amorettes star

is still very much in ascendance, and, as long as there are stages to play, and records to make, there is no sign of this “Female Motorhead” attempting to take the easy road to the top. Tickets for both shows from seetickets, Mario’s Hair Design, Kempston, Slide Records or Esquires bar, Bedford.

My Baby + Guests Bedford Esquires Wednesday 28th November 2018, doors at 7.30pm

We are very pleased to be able to bring the wonderful MY BABY back to Esquires in November, following on from one of the shows of the year back in April 2017. Being one of the best live bands we’ve ever clasped our eyes and ears on, it was only right we

booked the guys for our main stage River Festival line up, but you can’t beat the MY BABY experience up close and personal. In these times of turmoil and this busy and ongoing society that we live in, humankind is searching for a new way to go back to their primal awareness. MY BABY takes the audience on a “Shamanic” journey you have never seen before. The combination of light, visuals and music does so much more than just bringing their albums to life, it enchants the audience for the rest of their lives. Do not miss this show - This band are absolutely mind blowing. Tickets for both shows from seetickets, Mario’s Hair Design, Kempston, Slide Records or Esquires bar, Bedford.

Share some Christmas spirit with the Danesborough Chorus

Bring family and friends to raise a glass and sing some festive favourites with your popular local choir. The Danesborough Chorus promises you a warm welcome at its Christmas concert in St Mary’s Church, Woburn, on Saturday 15th December, at 7.30 p.m. Our heart-warming evening of seasonal music also features Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, with the rare treat of a solo harpist, Elizabeth Bass, and Holst’s charming Christmas Day - a choral fantasy on old carols. The concert is conducted by Ian Smith and accompanied by John Witchell on the piano and organ, with perhaps a

memorable reading to touch or amuse you, perhaps even bring a nostalgic tear to your eye, capturing that special atmosphere that belongs only to Christmas. Tickets are £12 (centre) and £9 (side) and £5 for under 18s, all unreserved, including a glass of wine or soft drink and a mince pie. For tickets, phone 01525 376760; or send stamped addressed envelope to Danesborough Tickets, 26 Melfort Drive, Leighton Buzzard, Beds, Lu7 2XN, stating number and price(s) of tickets required together with cheque made payable to ‘Danesborough Chorus’. www.danesborough.org.uk

Bedford Town Band 125th Anniversary Celebrations Way back in 1894, Bedford Town Band was formed to play brass music and promote the town. 125 years later the band is thriving, with over sixty players performing all over the county and beyond, learning and sharing music. To celebrate this anniversary, the band is hosting a day of celebrations at the Corn Exchange, and everyone’s welcome! There will be opportunities to have a go on instruments, begin learning to play, master-classes for experienced players and a gala concert in the evening featuring guests soloists and all sixty+ players from the bands joining together to welcome in our next 125 years.

Bedford Town Band continues the long tradition of encouraging brass music in the town. New players are always welcome to join the band and help enjoy banding into the next 125 years. As a large group Bedford Town Band is able to accommodate players of all abilities, from complete beginners through to nationally recognised artists. Visit te, www.bedfordtownband.org.uk, for more details, or speak to one of the players at one of the many events where the band will be performing in the run up to Christmas.
