New sixth form centre for Dunstable school

A speciAl school in Dunstable is to get a new sixth form centre with the help of the connolly Foundation, a local charity. Weatherfield Academy is a special school for children aged 7 to 19 years, who find it difficult to learn in mainstream setting. The Academy offers a curriculum that is tailored to the needs of the pupils. There are currently 135 pupils on roll at the Academy, which has an excellent learning environment, including a sensory garden and small holding, with some livestock. The grounds and farm are almost entirely looked after by the pupils of the Academy.

Due to ever increasing numbers, however, space is at a premium, particularly for the growing sixth form. With the help of the connolly Foundation, a brand new sixth form centre is to be built. Work begins this month, with completion expected to be in February 2019. Headteacher, Joe selmes said: “We are indebted to The connolly Foundation for their amazing support. This project can now become a reality and will allow our post 16 students to thrive and learn in a new state of the art classroom facility. This project will benefit the most vulnerable young people in our community”.

MOMENTOUS WEEK FOR ALL IN THE BATTLE TO SAVE OUR TOWN

Two Luton Town Football Club supporters’ groups have hailed “a momentous week” in the battle against “disgraceful” opposition to the Hatters’ regeneration plans.

A joint statement was released by luton Town supporters’ Trust and loyal luton supporters club on proposals for a 17,500-capacity stadium at power court in the town centre and a mixed use scheme at Newlands park next to M1 Junction 10. “This has been a momentous week for luton and 2020 Developments in the

MOMENTOUS WEEK FOR ALL IN THE BATTLE TO SAVE OUR TOWN Continued from page 1

with the 10,000 new jobs and £250million annual boost to the local economy they’ll bring – along with new facilities and attractions we can all be proud of. “With the new land purchases the whole power court site is now under one ownership for the first time in many a decade. And the funding was from existing 2020 Development shareholders – not from the public purse. “This means that what we’re all waiting for now is the green light of planning approval from lBc – and a significant potential obstacle to that has also disappeared this week, with intu withdrawing its objection to Newlands park.” intu, which operates major shopping malls including those in Milton Keynes and Watford, had “highlighted issues” and objected to Newlands park in 2016 and May 2018. But now they have seen the recent retail reports on the applications, they are “comfortable with the suggested mix of tenants” and “with the distinctive aspirational mix of uses are prepared to withdraw previous submissions made in relation to

these proposals”. The statement continued: “intu’s status and integrity as market leaders makes these statements even more impressive and authoritative. it is pretty much unprecedented in the sector for an objection to be withdrawn like this. intu had genuine concerns for the impact on the communities they serve, they looked into those concerns and found them to be satisfactorily answered. That’s what a decent, responsible organisation does. “What a contrast with capital & Regional’s response to those retail reports. “intu says that the ‘retail impact on the centres within the surrounding region can be sustained’. c&R says it can’t. so who are we to believe? “Anyone familiar with what has been happening over the last two years will know that c&R has been employing all sorts of dirty tricks and misinformation to – in their own words – kick the regeneration plans for luton ‘into the long grass’. “Recently those dirty tricks and delaying tactics have included lots of last minute requests to the council for additional reports and information. it would be interesting to know

how much dealing with that has cost the public purse – that’s us, the luton taxpayers and the communities c&R laughably claim to care about. “speaking of the public purse, Gary sweet’s letter highlights yet another example of c&R misinformation and malpractice. They stated in last week’s luton News that ‘We have previously offered to help support 2020’s power court application and we take this opportunity to re-affirm that offer once again.’ “Not so. Gary’s response starts by saying that ‘we do not need any further assistance in funding our stadium’. it goes on to point out that luton Borough council’s ceO chaired a meeting in April which all parties agreed would remain confidential, but that on a number of occasions c&R has broken that agreement. “That has led to Gary needing to directly respond to the c&R claims – and what a damning response it is. “it seems that c&R are of the opinion that funding for the stadium could come from other sources rather than the Newlands park mixed use development, but that every source of funding they suggested ultimately came from the public purse. Not their

money, but ours, in the shape of additional taxation of local businesses or the general public. so much for them ‘helping’. “2020 are rightly proud that that they have never, and will never, ask for public funding for power court and Newlands park. Gary sweet goes on to say that they have never had any funding offers made to them by c&R – neither do they need them. “unlike the operators of The Mall, 2020 Developments are all about supporting the communities of luton: with a new stadium for the football club, new facilities and a new pride in the town centre and a state-of-the-art ‘gateway’ to the town, all of which will generate thousands of new jobs, boost local finances enormously and make our town an even better place to live in. All at no cost to local taxpayers. “As fans of lTFc and of the town we all love, we can’t wait for it all to happen.” 2020 Developments’ planning applications for power court and Newlands park are waiting to be considered by luton council’s development control committee. Mr sweet said last week that he was hopeful a decision on the proposals will be made in December.

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service support the Road Victims Trust

THe Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) have shown their support for the Road Victims Trust (RVT), a Bedfordshire based charity who support all persons affected by a fatal road collision. each year the Trust supports in excess of 550 people who have been affected by a road death across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. The BFRS are sponsoring the RVT Annual Service of Remembrance that takes place at St Pauls Church, Bedford at 1500hrs on Sunday 18th November 2018. The Deputy Chief Fire officer, Andrew Hopkinson is pictured presenting a cheque for £500 to the Chief executive of the Road Victims Trust, Mark Turner. DCFo Hopkinson said: “we are delighted to support a locally based charity that does so much to support people at their lowest possible ebb. Firefighters at Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service know full well the consequences of serious road traffic collisions and the Remembrance Service is both an opportunity to raise the profile of the consequences of these too frequent serious incidents and to remember and support those who have been involved in them.” Mark Turner said: “ The traumatic effects of a road death on those left behind is absolutely devastating. It is heart-warming to receive the support of the BFRS who attend the scene of so many fatalities and do their jobs with the upmost pride and professionalism. we are very grateful” The Trust are extending an open invite to the Annual Service, that remembers and celebrates the lives of all those killed on the roads of Bedfordshire and beyond, and would love to see as many people there as possible on the day. Parents force Trust to rethink proposed cuts

ouTRAgeD parents of children who attend three schools run by The Heart Academies Trust have forced a major rethink of the Trust’s proposed cuts to senior staff at the schools in question.

parents of children attending shackleton, shortstown and cauldwell primary schools have formed a pressure group (ssc Action steering Group) and have fought the proposed cuts. A petition gathered several thousand signatures was presented to the Trust demanding a rethink of their plans to cut senior staff and the abolition of the three boards of governors. The Trust’s proposal was to bring all three primary schools within Heart under one head teacher. cut backs have already led to losses of Teaching Assistants at shackleton and parents fear the same will happen at the other schools. A spokesperson for the Trust said: “We have reflected on the comments and views of parents and have decided it would be better to pause the proposed restructure and not take any decisions until a mediation process is complete.” One parent, who didn’t want to be named, told us: “We feel we are paying the price for incompe-

tence elsewhere in the Heart Academies Trust and our children will suffer. They are trying to get rid of Governors of the individual schools so they can dominate us from the Trust level.” Heart Academies Trust was formed after Bedford Academy, formerly John Bunyan school, was selected by the labour Government for a new academy status with a £25 million state-ofthe-art new-build. The Harpur Trust was an educational sponsor in keeping with its charitable status. Then without warning in september 2018 a restructure was announced which would result in a number of senior leader positions being lost – including all three primary Head teachers. A member of ssc said: “The cost savings are a myth – the chosen model does not take into account all staffing and therefore actually costs more rather than saves. “consistency across three very different schools will not bring about an improvement in educational outcomes.”

BIGGLESWADE HAIRDRESSER WINS AT HJ’S BRITISH HAIRDRESSING BUSINESS AWARDS 2018 Maxwells Professional Hairdressing, Biggleswade, has been named as one of the country’s brightest hairdressing stars having won at HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards 2018. Maxwells Professional Hairdressing collected the Salon Team of the Year award, during a star-studded ceremony, hosted by TV presenter Vernon Kay. Held at the Park Plaza Hotel in London, the event was attended by over 800 hairdressers,VIPs and household names. This category celebrates teams of three or more employees, where the team is the backbone of the salon business. Maxwells is a home-grown family business, now the largest independent salon in Bedfordshire, with a team of over 40.They impressed the judges thanks to their team strengths, the contributions they all make to the financial success of the business, as well as the work they do to remember former friend and colleague Kirsty Buttigieg.Through the company’s Buttercup Awards (named after Kirsty) which encourage excellence among em-

ployees, and regular cancer charity fundraising events, they ensure Kirsty’s memory lives on. Jayne Lewis-Orr, executive director of the British Hairdressing Business Awards said; “Huge congratulations to Maxwells Professional Hairdressing on being named Salon Team of the Year. They are fantastic ambassadors for the industry with skills and vision that make them the perfect winners.Through these awards, we champion and celebrate the very best within British hairdressing – everyone from the Front of House Team to the Business Director. Hairdressing is often undervalued as a career choice despite the opportunities it affords people including worldwide travel as a session stylist, flexible working as well as a creative and business outlet for driven individuals. “There are over 40,000 hairdressing, barbering and beauty businesses in the UK, with the number growing daily. The industry employs nearly 300,000 individuals with over half being selfemployed and it is a hugely innovative

industry and one we are all incredibly proud to work in.” Launched in 1998, HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards promote professionalism, innovation and excellence – while recognising those individuals and teams who work tirelessly to raise the profile of the hairdressing industry, with previous winners including Toni&Guy, Rush, Electric and Lee Stafford. Commenting on winning the award, Ian Hendry of Maxwells, said, “It feels absolutely amazing to win. This is the award we really wanted, and we got it! The team and the clients, that’s what it’s all about. I’m just sorry that not everyone from the salon could be here tonight, some of them have stayed behind to hold the fort – to them, and everyone, thank you!” The British Hairdressing Business Awards took place on 17th September 2018 at the Park Plaza Hotel,Westminster Bridge, London. HoLLYwooD may have brought the MeToo Movement to light, but this week the fight for gender inequality arrived in Bedfordshire with the launch of the eVoLVe network by the Bedfordshire and Luton Community Foundation. Hosted by the High Sheriff, Julian Polhill at Howbury Hall the launch was lifted by an inspiring speech from the wellknown business woman and philanthropist, Dame Stephanie Shirley. The eVoLVe network was initiated to harness the skills, expertise and resources of local women in order to address gender inequality within the county and to raise funds for the Mark west Fund for women, which funds local charities who support women in vulnerable situations. Fozia Irfan, the Ceo of the Foundation stated “we know that women and women’s services have been disproportionately hit by austerity measures – women face a triple jeopardy of cuts to jobs, benefits and vital services. Many women work in part time, insecure employment which makes them vulnerable but conversely a lot of the services they need to access for themselves and their families, have also been severely underfunded.” So far, the Foundation has raised almost £100’000 for the Mark west Fund for women from individual donations and from organisations such as London Luton Airport Limited and the Amateurs Trust. These donations have been used to fund projects run by local charities such as Azalea to help women, facing poverty and homelessness and Families First who work with victims of domestic abuse. The Foundation is calling on local women who are interested in being part of the movement to advocate for gender equality in the county and to raise funds for women, to come together in this collaborative network. Thanks also have to go to MHA MacIntyre Hudson and the Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce for supporting this event and to the Lord Lieutenant, Helen Nellis for taking on the role of Patron of the network. out & about Avenue Q

Mill Theatre, Mill Road, Sharnbrook MK44 1NP Monday 5 - Saturday 10 November at 7.30pm.

it’s just like your life... only funnier! This outrageous, puppet-filled, comedy musical about a university graduate finding his way in New york city is filled with hilarious songs, innovative dance moves and a rather ‘adult’ scene. When princeton moves into a shabby area of New york, all the way out on Avenue Q, all he wants to do

is find his purpose. But, as everyone knows, life doesn’t always turn out how you planned, but if you have an interesting array of friends in all col-ours, shapes and furs around you… Well, anything can happen! This is a truly gut-bustingly funny and unique show that will defi-nitely make you feel “special”. Sesame Street was never like this! All together now... the Internet is for... parental guidance is suggested for children under 15 due to its adult content.

TWO HOME WINS – TWO GREAT PERFORMANCES

LuToN TowN.............................2 (1) wALSALL.....................................0 (0)

cOMpOseD luton again dominated at home as they eased past Walsall 2-0 in a victory that could have been many more. inspirational skipper Glen Rea gave the Hatters the lead with a scrappy opener as Town dominated throughout and made sure of victory with Jorge Grant’s exquisite free-kick in the second half. The Hatters created numerous other opportunities in another entertaining encounter as they made it five wins and two draws from seven home league games this season. The only sour point for luton was an injury to full-back Dan potts who was forced off just before the break. Town started brightly as Andrew shinnie’s turn and shot was deflected behind while Matty pearson poked wide from a corner Walsall were unable to clear. shinnie’s fantastic through-ball ran just too far for Jack stacey as he was just beaten to it by the keeper on 15 minutes. luton finally took a deserved lead though four minutes later with the scrappiest of goals. A Grant corner was headed down by the returning Danny Hylton and Town skipper Rea somehow bundled the ball through a crowd of players to score. The saddlers won a dangerous free-kick moments later but Zeli ismail’s effort was headed away by the wall. A wonderful turn and shot from Grant after the half hour was too close to liam Roberts as the Hatters continued to dominate possession. Walsall finally found some space out wide but Andy cook could only glance wide of the goal from the cross as the visitors proceeded to enjoy their best spell of the half. luton were forced into a change moments before the break when potts pulled up in agony with a groin injury and was replaced by James Justin. The substitute was in the wars early in the second half when pelly Ruddock-Mpanzu’s fullyblooded clearance caught him full in the face, but after some treatment he was OK to continue. A brilliant surging run from deep by Grant was ended on the edge of the area by Jon Gurthrie’s foul for which he was booked. Grant then saw justice was done when his sublime free-kick sailed over the wall leaving Roberts clutching thin air to make it 2-0 on 55 minutes. Town had claims for a penalty ignore when sonny Bradley seemed to be caught in the face as James collins proceeded to drive over the bar. The woodwork then came to the saddlers’ rescue as Justin’s driving run and shot rebounded off the near post with Hylton unable to capitalise on the rebound. A clever short-corner routine saw shinnie’s clever chip cleared before Hylton was unable to turn home a flowing Hatters attack. substitute connor Ronan fizzed harmlessly over from 35 yards before referee Andy Woolmar’s inadvertent touch allowed luton to counter as collins’ deflected effort went straight into Roberts’ midriff.

The Hatters were happy to build from deep and stacey raced forward before finding Hylton, who turned on a sixpence and teased the defender before dragging agonisingly wide on 72 minutes. At the other end, Josh Ginnelly was superbly halted by Justin and Andy cook proceeded to lash the loose ball well over from range. Replacement Harry cornick almost made an instant impact as he exchanged passes with collins and crossed for the target man whose craning header dipped just over the bar. A firecracker from shinnie from long-range was fumbled to safety by Roberts before Bradley saw his close-range effort well blocked from another dangerous Town free-kick. A brutal Mpanzu challenge drew cheers from the crowd before substitute Kazenga lua lua’s deep cross found cornick and his low drive was turned behind by the keeper’s foot at his near post. cook’s flick was easily saved by James shea in stoppage time as the Hatters continued their incredible home form and moved to within touching distance of the play-offs. HATTeRS: James shea, Dan potts (James Justin 45), sonny Bradley, Matty pearson, Jack stacey, Danny Hylton (Harry cornick 79), Andew shinnie, Glen Rea (c ), pelly Ruddock-Mpanzu, Jorge Grant (Kazenga lua lua 88), James collins. subs not used: Alan Mccormack, elliot lee, Harry isted, Alan sheehan. SADDLeRS: liam Roberts, luke leahy, George Dobson (c ), Jon Guthrie, Nicky Devlin (Kane Wilson 62), Andy cook, Zeli ismail (connor Ronan 62), Josh Ginnelly (Josh Gordon 83), liam Kinsella, Morgan Ferrier, Jack Fitzwater. subs not used: Kieron Morris, chris Dunn, connor Johnson, isaiah Osbourne. Attendance: 8,953 (504 Walsall).

LuToN TowN.............................4 (1) ACCRINgToN STANLeY .........1 (1)

FiT and firing Hatters hitman Danny Hylton was back on song as he hit a hat-trick to help rout Accrington stanley 4-1 at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday night. The reinvigorated and rejuvenated striker was part of a luton team that was far too good for the spoilers of stanley whose attempts to goad players and supporters alike proved fruitless as Andrew shinnie also struck in another fine victory as Town moved into the league One play-off places. With Dan potts ruled out, James Justin came into the starting Xi and he had an immediate impact as he laid on the fifth-minute opener. From defending a free-kick on the edge of their own area luton broke at pace with Jorge Grant’s brilliant through-ball releasing Justin on the left and his first-time left-foot cross perfectly picked out Hylton in the area to side-foot home on the volley past the exposed Jonny Maxted. stanley passed up a great opportunity to level the scores after a quarter of an hour when sam Finley’s cross picked out the unmarked Offrande Zanzala in the area but his free header was too close to James shea who was able to palm the effort away. However, that warning went unheeded and they levelled on 27 minutes in almost carbon copy fashion. Another early cross picked out the unmarked Zanzala and, although his header was straight at shea, the ball somehow went through him as it squirmed over the line. luton looked to respond as a livid Justin was

convinced he should have a penalty when his low cross was blocked behind before his long-range effort was straight at Maxted. An even encounter ensued as shinnie dragged an effort wide from the edge of the box before a pass intended for Hylton ran through to the onrushing James collins on the edge of the area but he stroked too close to Maxted when he should have given luton lead on the stroke of half time. A hard-fought first half was then marred as the Accrington bench surrounded the officials on the way off the field as both teams clashed with luton sub Alan Mccormack eventually booked for his reaction to some pushing and shoving. The second half started in bitty fashion as sonny Bradley volleyed over from a corner before the Hatters retook the lead on 52 minutes. shinnie intercepted well in the final third, drove forward and unleashed a fantastic low effort to beat Maxted. And it was 3-1 moments later when Grant and shinnie combined well with the scotsman’s low driven cross running to Hylton at the far post to gleefully stroke home. shell-shocked stanley looked to respond as they upped the pace and a swift counter created room for sean Mcconville whose curler was well saved by shea’s fingertips with Justin doing brilliantly to block Jordan clark’s follow up. The game became increasingly frenetic and illtempered as Grant was booked for a poor challenge that brought another melee from the stanley bench. More good play on the edge of the box by the visitors allowed Mcconville to wriggle free but his low effort lacked venom and was easily saved. As the bookings started to tot up Town made sure of victory as Hylton completed his hat-trick. Grant floated a free-kick to the back post and Bradley headed back across goal for Hylton to head in off a post from close range as Kenilworth Road erupted. Accrington should have grabbed a lifeline on 74 minutes when Zanzala could only head against the bar from point-blank range as a tetchy game grew increasingly niggly. Mcconville, constantly in the referee’s ear, was also stanley’s biggest threat as he cut inside Jack stacey on 83 minutes before leathering straight at shea. With five minutes added Glen Rea’s looping defensive header beat shea and somehow dipped just over the bar. From the corner luton broke in numbers with a four-on-two but, with just Maxted left to beat, collins’ effort was too close to the keeper when he really should have scored. However, it mattered not as fortress Kenilworth Road claimed another victim as luton went sixth in the table.

HATTeRS: James shea, James Justin, sonny Bradley, Matty pearson, Jack stacey, Danny Hylton (Kazenga lua lua 81), Andrew shinnie (Alan sheehan 85), Glen Rea (c ), pelly Ruddock-Mpanzu, Jorge Grant (Harry cornick 76), James collins. subs not used: Alan Mccormack, elliot lee, Aaron Jarvis, Harry isted.
