SHINING BEACON FOR A BRIGHTER LUTON TOWN LUTON Town Football Club is “shining a beacon for a brighter Luton” with its plans for two major developments, the Hatters’ chief executive said this week.

Gary Sweet said the club is eager to start building its new 17,500-capacity stadium at Power Court as soon as it is given the green light by Luton Council.

Planning work has been continuing for two years since the club submitted its applications for the stadium and its Newlands Park retail, office and leisure scheme at M1 Junction 10. And Mr Sweet told the Luton News: “Other than working hard to respond to all questions and technical queries, we didn’t

want to sit still, so we’ve been working through some of the more technical elements of the stadium design as well as those complexities of the sub-station and the landscaping designs for the river.”

The club this week released several images from its work to show the regeneration potential of the Power Court site should it be approved by Luton Council’s development control committee, probably by the end of October. “We’re very conscious that the stadium

SHINING BEACON FOR A BRIGHTER LUTON TOWN will sit proudly facing St Mary’s Church and very close to the great work Luton Culture are doing with the Cultural Quarter,” Mr Sweet told the Luton News. “Our stadium façade won’t look like a typical, modern stadium many of our supporters will see on their travels. We’ve borrowed some of the core architectural design qualities of the old hat factories along Guildford Street and Bute Street and some of the features of St Mary’s so the stadium will sit as a natural extension of those two areas of our town. “We’ve also worked hard to give St Mary’s a stage along the river frontage which we think works really well – certainly a lot more complementary to our only grade 1 listed building than anything that has appeared before. “As you can see from the designs, we’ve continued to progress matters without building. “We’ve spent a massive sum at risk, without borrowing from banks or forward funding any part of our schemes. Taking initial sketched concepts to 3D CAD modelled designs, as you can see from the graphics shown, doesn’t come cheap and Continued from page 1

steps into the next phase of our development, the detailed application which we will need to submit after the outline approval.” Mr Sweet said: “Make no mistake here, we’re taking this commitment very, very seriously. It’ll be our home, our future so we need to care passionately about the eventual outcome. “Our football club has proudly resided at Kenilworth Road since 1905 and a relocation from our home was first talked about in 1957 – this giant leap is long overdue. “But this isn’t just about football, this will change the town and improve the way all our communities will engage with each other.

“But we want to move faster and we want to make this a reality for the club and town to benefit. We see no reason why Luton should be held back any further. “Both applications will unlock opportunities in the town as soon as they’re approved. There’s a strong argument to suggest, as many are, that we’re already having an impact on the town’s aspirations with so much development going on as we speak. “A developer’s activity will be based upon their confidence in the town’s future ambition and we believe we’re shining a beacon for a brighter Luton with our two developments.”

Crime in Mayor plans for Wixams Station Biggleswade – amid accusations of inaction BIGGLeSWADe and the surrounding area has seen a rise in crime which is becoming an increasing source of concern for residents. Reports of bicycle theft, car break-ins and attempted house entry have risen along with shop lifting and break-ins and mugging, including two recent attacks on elderly people. The reporting of crimes on Facebook pages such as We Love Biggleswade has made people more aware of what is happening in our area, however this is not enough to resolve the current issues. Firstly it is extremely important that all crimes, no matter how seemingly small and insignificant, are reported to the police as this is the only way in which their statistics will be accurate. Secondly, as many people as possible need to contact our MP Alistair Burt and the Police Commissioner Kathryn Holloway so that they are forced to look into our concerns; their email addresses are alistair.burt.mp@parliament.uk and PCC@bedfordshire.pnn.police.uk. If you are worried about crime in the area then please take the time to have your say and hopefully, together, the town can be heard.

BeDFORD Borough Mayor Dave Hodgson has stepped in to rescue the planned station in Wixams after the failure of the toothless planning deal to deliver the long-planned project. The original planning agreement in 2006 did not make the delivery of a station a condition of the development, instead including a contribution from the developers comprising less than half the estimated cost. It was intended that the rest would be funded nationally. Commenting, Mayor Dave said: “This is a crucial facility for Wixams and we cannot let this station just be lost to the community. I know from speaking to local residents just how important this is for so many people. That’s why, while it isn’t the job of councils to build railways stations and that was never intended in this case, I am stepping to make it our business. “We will make sure residents get the station they were promised. “The station should have been made a condition of the development back when planning permission was awarded. There is still more work to be done on getting all the plans and approvals in place. However, Mayor Dave’s commitment means that for

the first time, funds for the full cost of the station have been identified. The station will be served by the Thameslink line, including services to and from London. The full cost of the station is projected to be £27.4 million, and the gap in funding to be filled by the Council is £14 million. Borough Cllr for Wixams, Graeme Coombes commenting on the announcement said: “This is welcome news and not before time. After a prolonged push by residents, the Parish Council, Wixams Neighbourhood Watch and others, continuous pressure has forced the Mayor to act. For those of us who have followed this saga for the last nine years, the lack of urgency and co-ordination from the Mayor and Borough Council has been all too apparent, for too long.

The Mayor has chosen to blame everyone else for the delay and present himself as the white knight riding to the station project’s rescue. But the question must be asked of him: “Why has it taken you so long to get your act together? If you can do this now, why not years ago, before the costs spiralled out of control?” “Also, it was only six months ago that the Mayor was lauding the benefits of a new station in Sharnbrook. Strong opposition from Wixams residents and the lack of planning and proper research by the Mayor meant that the Sharnbrook scheme had to be pulled before it had even got started.” The proposal to include the project in the Council’s Capital Programme will be considered by the Mayor’s Executive at its meeting on Wednesday September 19th.

Volunteers still hard at work spreading the word – ‘save our town’ VOLuNTeeRS from the #saveourtown campaign group took to Luton town centre for a second time in a month on Saturday to engage with local people about the once-in-a-lifetime chance to transform the town.

After a successful first visit at the end of August, campaigners returned to spend time chatting to shoppers outside The Mall and distributing leaflets and posters about the plans for Newlands Park and Power Court.

#saveourtown has been raising awareness across the community about the facilities presented by Luton Town Football Club’s proposals, which will boost the local economy by £250million per year and create 10,000 new jobs. The dual-site plans include a new 17,500seat stadium for the Hatters in the centre of town, plus a 1,800-capacity major music venue, bars, restaurants, leisure, community, hotel and conferencing facilities, the re-emergence of the River Lea, homes and high-end retail. Volunteer Trish Brazier said: “We met some lovely people who were really keen to support us. Many thanked us for our efforts so far and we also got to meet Lorna from Hillborough Junior School, who was one of the people behind the school’s excellent #saveourtown video that really encapsulates what our campaign is about.” https://www.facebook.com/saveourtown luton/videos/185514938979905/ Deborah Clark said: “A few people we met actually made the trip into town just to say hello and to speak to us, while it also gave us the opportunity to alter one or two misconceptions that still linger about the two proposals. For instance, one man believed that retailers could choose to move from The Mall to Newlands Park. That is not the case as the football club have said since they revealed the plans in 2016 and, more recently, by the independent retail assessment suggestion of non-poaching agreements.” Nigel Green, who chairs the campaign, said: “We continue to be both amazed and humbled by the level of very positive support and the compliments for our campaign.

“We won’t stop engaging with the people who live and work in Luton because the more people that know the facts and the more people that support us, the stronger our demand becomes for the progress, jobs, opportunities, investments and facilities that Luton deserves.” Thanks to the generosity of supporters who have donated to the Save Our Town Campaign through its JustGiving page https://www.just giving.com/crowdfunding/ saveourtownluton and through a bucket collection at a Luton Town home game on August 11, work has started on building a new website. A #saveourtown spokesman said: “Our existing site served the campaign very well at

CLICK HERE TO SUPPOR #saveou T rtown

the start-up in May and in the weeks since then, but we are conscious of the need to make it as easy as possible to keep up to date with campaign activity and to browse through previous news stories and endorsements from all our supporting businesses, individuals and celebrities. “Our social media platforms, especially Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, are vibrant, up-to-date and dynamic. They allow us to reach a very large audience and communicate to a wide range of age groups with instant news, especially the younger supporters. “It’s important, however, to remember many people who want to know more about Save Our Town are not social media users and we have a duty to keep them informed as well. A website also acts as a repository of information, contact details and links to other websites and is the ‘face’ of the campaign.” Work is underway to redesign and rebuild the site and to make it more functional and easier to use on different devices such as smart phones and tablets as well as desktop and laptop computers. The www.saveourtownluton.co.uk address will be unchanged and the existing site will continue to operate for the next few weeks until the new one goes live.

Linslade death crash victim named THe man who died in a collision in Linslade on Friday, September 7, 2018, has been named. Kevin Marsh, 72, from Leighton Buzzard, was struck by a car in Leighton Road at around 10.30pm. He was taken to hospital where he sadly died. Sergeant Stephen Andrews, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire Roads Policing unit, said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with Mr Marsh’s family and friends. We’re continuing to appeal for witnesses for the collision and would ask for anyone with information to get in touch.” Mr Marsh’s family said in tribute to their brother; “ Kevin John Marsh was born in Liverpool at the end of the Second World War to edna and John Marsh. He was a quiet but mathematically gifted child who passed his eleven-plus examination when just 10 years old and gained a place at the prestigious Quarry Bank Grammar School in Liverpool. He went on to study Mathematics and Physics at the university of Liverpool and from there had a career in the developing Computer industry. He worked as a Systems Analyst in the defence and finance industries in London, Switzerland,

the Bahamas and elsewhere, even undertaking projects in Nigeria. “He retired from the City having been involved with its computerisation and came to live in Linslade, near to his ageing parents. He visited his widowed mother in Bideford Green every day until she passed away in 2008. He is survived by his younger brother, sister and two nieces and nephew and we are all greatly saddened by his sudden death. “We are comforted by the fact that Kevin was able to contribute to others via organ donation and in doing so changed the lives of at least three people who had anxiously been awaiting transplant surgery. “We hope that families in such tragic circumstances may also be able to consider supporting the organ donation scheme to give people in need a new life, in memory of their loved one.” An 18-year-old man from Leighton Buzzard has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving over the prescribed limit, and has been released under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting Operation Knapp. You can also give information online via the Bedfordshire Police website.

Drug dealer gets 15 months for multiple offences A MAN from Luton was jailed for 15 months on Friday, September 7, 2018, at Luton Crown Court, after being found guilty of actual bodily harm (ABH), dangerous driving and possession of class A drugs. James McDaid, 52, of Ruthin Close, was sentenced to eight months behind bars for ABH, six months for dangerous driving, and one month for the obstruction of a police officer in the course of his duty. He was also disqualified from driving for 19 months, and must take an extended retest, and fined £250 for possession of the drugs. On 28 July, McDaid was seen by two officers driving his car in Napier Road, Luton. On receiving information that he was wanted for recall to prison, they indicated for him to stop the vehicle. As an officer leaned into the car to prevent McDaid driving off, he reversed at speed causing the officer to be dragged for a short distance, and the other officer to be thrown to one side. McDaid then made off, and the officers pursued him. He abandoned his car after it sustained a flat tyre, and continued his escape on foot. He was arrested in Luton town centre on 14 August, and found to be in possession of four wraps of white powder, which proved to be crack

cocaine. He was further arrested on suspicion of possession of class A drugs. Detective Constable Scott Hannam, investigating, said: “McDaid was driving dangerously in order to evade capture. He was lucky that the officers were not badly hurt, or that his driving didn’t cause a collision with other road users. “

Leighton 100mph car chase results in prison sentence A MAN from Milton Keynes has been sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, and disqualified from driving for three years, after he made off from police at speeds of up to 100mph in Leighton Buzzard in February.

Michael Nevin, 19, of Nash Park, abandoned his car and was tracked by officers to a property in Toddington, where he was found in bed, pretending to be asleep. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at Luton Crown Court on Friday, September 7, 2018, and received a further six months for driving whilst disqualified, suspended to run concurrently. If he commits further offences, or fails to comply with conditions, he faces having the prison sentence activated. Nevin must also complete 120 hours of community service, undergo 12 months’ Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and attend 20 days of requirements. He was also fined £800 court costs, and a further £200 for having no insurance. The incident took place on February 20, 2018, when, at around 10am, on-duty Bedfordshire Police officer Charlie Bird saw Nevin’s car, stationary, on the A4146. On checking if the vehicle had been involved in a collision, PC Bird saw Nevin and another driver having a verbal altercation. PC Bird requested Nevin to stay where he was, but Nevin got back in his car and drove off towards Dunstable at speeds of up to 100mph. In an attempt to evade the officer, Nevin drove onto the A505, drove round a roundabout the wrong way, then drove off towards Toddington, where he abandoned his car and hid out in an associate’s property. A member of the public alerted officers to the abandoned vehicle, and

enquiries led the team to the address where Nevin was found in a bedroom, under a duvet. He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failure to stop and driving whilst disqualified. A search of the garden revealed a discarded car key, which fit the vehicle. ––––––––––––––

Gang rob cyclist in Queens Park

POLICe are appealing for information following a robbery in Queens Park, Bedford, on Thursday evening September 6. Between 8.30pm and 9pm, the victim was approached by a group of men while riding his bike near a bridge near the Slipe. After approaching the victim, the group then assaulted him and took cash and bank cards from his backpack. The offenders are described as a group of six or seven black and Asian men, thought to be wearing black hooded jackets with the hoods up at the time. Detective Constable David Gordon, investigating, said: “As part of my investigation, I’m now keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time, and who may have seen anything suspicious, to come forward. We think that there may have been dog walkers in the vicinity at the time, and would urge them to get in touch.

Ten arrests during new initiative in Dunstable and Houghton Regis TeN people have been arrested by our officers as part of an initiative to target drug dealing and anti-social behaviour in Dunstable and Houghton Regis.

Following a public meeting in Dunstable on 22 August, where feedback from residents showed they were most concerned about anti-social behaviour, drugs and burglary, we launched Operation Hilton.

The first two weeks of the operation saw police officers and PCSOs carry out high visibility patrols in hotspot areas, and visit

businesses in the areas that had been affected by the reported issues. The 10 arrests included: A 22-year-old man from Dunstable and a 22-year-old man from Luton were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a Class B drug, and possession of a firearm – both have been released on bail A 28-year-old man from Dunstable was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a Class B drug and was later released on bail A 19-year-old man from Luton was arrested on suspicion of

possession with intent to supply Class A and Class B drugs and was later released on bail A 19-year-old man from Billington has been arrested on suspicion of going equipped and was later released with no further action Two men, aged 26 and 22, from Bristol have been arrested on suspicion of being in possession of counterfeit cash A 20-year old man from Luton was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class B drugs and was later released on bail A 35-year-old man from

Houghton Regis has been arrested and charged with drink driving A 22-year-old man from Barton-le-Clay was arrested on suspicion of theft, possession of a bladed article and possession of cannabis and was later released on bail As well as the arrests, officers stopped and searched 25 people, handed out six cannabis cautions and seized three vehicles, one of which was reported stolen. During the course of Operation Hilton we also led a series of drugs warrants across Bedfordshire and in London, including in Dunstable. Ten people have been charged with drug offences as a result of these warrants. Chief Superintendent David Boyle said: “Operation Hilton was launched to address the issues raised by residents in Dunstable and Houghton Regis, and show how seriously we take their concerns. “Building trust and confidence in our force is really important, and I hope our communities know that we do listen when they raise concerns and we will act on them. “We are committed to taking robust action against perpetrators and will take a strong and firm approach to those blighting communities in central Bedfordshire.” Anyone with any information about crime in their area can report it by calling 101, or by visiting our online reporting centre. Saving history with saplings ROYAL Horticultural Society course students at Shuttleworth College have saved the historical lineage of an ancient pear tree in Warwickshire due to be destroyed by the HS2 train line. The pear tree is believed to have been growing near the village of Cubbington for 250 years and may be the oldest in the uK. It was voted the Tree of the Year in 2015 by the Woodland Trust amid the HS2 controversy. Now horticulture students have propagated 20 saplings from the original which will be planted around the village near Leamington Spa this autumn. Further trees will be created by chip budding and bench grafting at the college at Old Warden in Bedfordshire in the coming academic year. Shuttleworth College’s expert in this field is RHS Tutor Paul Labous who said: “This has been a wonderful opportunity for our students to be involved in rescuing some of the heritage of our our nation’s horticulture. The project combined perfecting highly skilled practical techniques together embracing an understanding of the historical significance of fruit tree farming in the uK.” Paul has been involved in the revival of “Shakespeare’s Pear” the Warden, which has won much acclaim. In 2016 Shuttleworth College celebrated winning a Heritage Lottery Fund grant for its “Bedfordshire Old Warden Pear: Identification by DNA testing, Propagation and Bedding Out” Project. Shuttleworth College which is located in the village of Old Warden, Bedfordshire has received a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant. This exciting

project, “The Bedfordshire Old Warden Pear: Identification by DNA testing, Propagation and Bedding Out”, at the Old Warden site, and led by Paul Labous, RHS Tutor, has been given £8,400 towards identifying the original Old Warden Pear from different varieties, using DNA testing, and

exploring the heritage of the pear and its associations with the village of Old Warden. The aim of this project is to research the origin of the local culinary Warden Pear, believed to have first been grown at the Cistercian abbey near to the village of Old Warden in Bedfordshire, circa 1388.

motoring LAST Sunday, 9th September, over 250 pre-tax vehicles arrived at Bicester Heritage to take part in the inaugural Hagerty Renaissance Meeting – An Alternative Revival, an opportunity for those unable to attend the Goodwood Revival to enjoy all the track activities from the historic race circuit in West Sussex on a large screen. Classic vehicle insurance specialists Hagerty International created the event with the full backing of the Goodwood Revival team. Hosting the event at Bicester Heritage provided a truly exceptional backdrop to the screening. The event was complete with vintage hairdressers, the Home Guard in action, a few local air displays and everyone was dressed for the occasion. The event also supported Goodwood’s chosen charity, the RAF Benevolent Fund and raised £255 for this excellent cause by giving away Renaissance pin badges in exchange for a donation to the charity. “We had a really terrific day, and everyone made such an effort to get into the spirit of the event with their vehicles, picnics and clothes. It was just like being at the event itself” said Angus Forsyth, Managing Director of Hagerty International. “The Goodwood Revival still sets the benchmark for the classic car world and we were delighted that Bicester Heritage could play a part

in sharing its magic” said Dan Geoghegan Managing Director of Bicester Heritage. Stylish duo Gary and Linda Davis won a pair of tickets to the Revival 2019 after being judged ‘Best Dressed Couple’, their outfits complete with lots of ‘50s accessories such as a Roberts radio,

Alongside this he has had a solo career, and is now heading out on the road to support his recent album ‘Ghost in the Tanglewood’ released by Graphite Records in March 2018. “While leaning towards country music, my fairly unavoidable accent means that the songs come off less Willie Nelson and more Bobby Thompson, but every lyric is purely heartfelt and every song is as true a

This album began life as a Pledge Campaign with all profits donated to The Samaritans to raise an awareness and support suicide prevention and mental health issues – a theme running through the album and close to Ginger’s heart. LATE PENALTY SEALS VICTORY OVER JERSEY by Mark Wood

BEDFORD BLUES .................26 (12) JERSEY .....................................22 (8)

AN injury-time try propelled Bedford Blues to a bonus point 26-22 victory over dogged Jersey at Goldington Road on Saturday.

Bedford dominated for long periods, with their pack particularly impressive, but needed a late penalty try to ensure victory over the Reds who finished the game with 13.

Hooker Charlie Clare was in fine form, touching down twice (14 and 47), winger Dean Adamson (38) also touched down, while stand-in flyhalf ed Coulson impressed as he also added two conversions to seal victory. Jersey were not without their chances as Roy Godfrey was ruled short for what seemed like a good try in the first half, while James Newey also passed up a gilt-edged opportunity for the visitors who had only a losing bonus point to show for their efforts. The Reds started well as they countered from deep on five minutes as Auguy Slowik raced away and found Leroy Van Dam in support, but his pass was spilt as a great chance went begging. Bedford should have taken the lead on nine minutes when they won a central scrum penalty, but Coulson’s kick went wide. With a penalty coming Bedford’s way, ex-england star Lee Dickson’s pass to Ryan Hutler proved too fierce on 12 minutes, but from the resulting lineout Clare was driven over, only for Coulson’s kick to sneak wide. Great combination play between Nick Selway and Godfrey earned the Reds a penalty they sent to the corner. Jersey proceeded to pound away at the line and Godfrey thought he had scored when he reached out midway through the half, but was adjudged just short, before Bedford won a scrum penalty to clear their lines. Mark Best did fantastically to pick a pass off his laces and a penalty soon followed as Brett Herron’s kick reduced the deficit to two points. A quick-thinking penalty from Dickson moved Bedford in striking range, but a double-movement on Jersey’s line earnt the visitors a much-needed penalty. They then snatched the lead on 35 minutes when Herron’s wonderful lifted pass put Slowik in

at the corner, although Herron was off target with the difficult conversion. However, Bedford hit straight back with their second try three minutes later when Dickson’s fabulous floated pass found Adamson in support to score in the corner with Coulson adding the extras with his hardest kick of the game. The hosts looked to break again in stoppage time and only a fine mark from Will Homer stopped them from extending their lead as Jersey trailed 12-8 at the interval. Herron should have narrowed the gap to one point with an early second half penalty, but it strangely drifted wide. They paid a heavy price as Bedford scored their third try on 47 minutes, Clare being driven over and Coulson adding a superb conversion. Reds should have had their second on 54 minutes when Slowick’s mercurial break left them three on one, but Newey somehow failed to gather the pass with the line begging. However, another lung-bursting break by Godfrey earned Jersey field position and moments later Herron stepped through with a brilliant jinking run on the hour to score, before, converting himself. And with 12 minutes to go the Reds took the lead when Godfrey again broke and found Conor Joyce in support to score, with Herron adding the simple conversion to make it 2219. A charged down kick by Dickson put Jersey in trouble and Sam Rodman was sin-binned on 76 minutes for bringing down a maul headed for the line. A second was felled in similar fashion before Jersey pinched a lineout to survive as the clocked ticked down. However, Bedford turned the screw in stoppage time and a maul heading for the line was again illegally brought down for a penalty try – Graham Geldenhuys being sin-binned this time – as Bedford deservedly claimed victory with a try-scoring bonus point to boot.
