SIX ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH BEDFORD BOY’S MURDER

THE family of a 16-year-old boy killed in Bedford have paid tribute to their ‘lovely and popular boy’. Cemeren Yilmaz, of Roman Paddock, Harrold, who was known as Cem, was the victim of a fatal attack in Ashmead Road on Sunday night.

In a statement, his family said: “Cem was a much loved son, grandson and brother. It is a very sad loss for us as a family and we are heartbroken at his death. “He was a lovely and popular boy and had his whole life ahead of him. We would ask that our privacy is respected at this difficult time.” Detectives are now appealing to Cem’s friends to help them with the investigation into his death. Yesterday (Wednesday September 20) police made two further arrests, of a 40-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy, both from Bedford, on suspicion of murder, taking the total number of arrests in the investigation to six. Four people – two 19-year-old men and two 15-year-old boys, all from Bedford – had already been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody. The incident happened at around 10.20pm on Sunday, September 16, 2018, in Ashmead Road, Bedford. Cem was attacked by a group of males and suffered stab wounds as well as other injuries. He was taken to hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead on Monday morning. Detective Chief Inspector Michael Branston, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, investigating, said: “Our hearts go out to Cem’s family at this incredibly difficult time. We are absolutely determined to bring those responsible for this shocking attack to justice. “While we are piecing together the information about what happened, we are really keen to hear from Cem’s friends about the background to this appalling incident.”

LTFC CHAIRMAN SENDS CRITICS A CLEAR MESSAGE THE chairman of Luton Town Football Club this week gave a clear message to anyone who tries to question the Hatters directors’ motives over plans for two major developments.

Referring to the Power Court and Newlands Park proposals, David Wilkinson said: “There are those in connection with our planning applications who try to cast doubt on our motives. They don’t know us. We are a steadfast bunch.” Writing in the matchday programme for Luton’s home game against Bristol Rovers on Saturday, Mr Wilkinson pointed out that the club’s directors and investors have a combined total of 370 years as fans of the club. “It’s all about credentials and custodianship,” he said. “I doubt there is a club in the country where the current board of directors and investors have some 370 years of supporting their club. “If you include vice presidents, who are former chairmen, investors and directors, the numbers go off the chart. “The majority were born in or have a major connection to the town and have proved their resilience by continuing to support throughout adversity. We know the highs and lows. We have reached the top and touched the bottom.” Mr Wilkinson added that when 2020 Developments, which runs the club, was put together it backed a plan and ten years

by Geoff Cox on that plan is “still good”. The chairman said the directors and investors are more determined than ever to make the 17,500-capacity Power Court stadium in the town centre and the Newlands Park retail, office and leisure development at M1 Junction 10 “happen for the town and the club”. Former Hatters chairman, TV presenter Nick Owen, who is now a vice president, recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of watching his first Luton Town game. Mike Herrick saw his first match in 1957, Bob Curson, David Wilkinson and Mick Pattinson all in 1958, chief executive Gary Sweet in 1971, Paul Ballantyne the following year and Stephen Browne in 1983. “If there are any youngsters watching for the first time, can you imagine in 2078 looking back to today, as we are looking back to our first games?” asked Mr Wilkinson. “That’s why we are only custodians of this unique club and why our plans are so important.” The Power Court and Newlands Park applications, submitted in August 2016, are to be considered by Luton Council’s development control committee, probably at the end of October.

Boxer looks forward to world fight in Luton LUTON’S undefeated boxing prospect Linus Udofia is on the road to success and hopes it will lead to a world title fight at Luton Town Football Club’s proposed new stadium at Power Court. The Lewsey Farm middleweight will battle for the Southern Area belt in December, but has first joined campaign group #saveourtown’s fight for the regeneration of the town through Newlands Park and Power Court, where a 17,500-seat stadium is planned. Udofia, 25, extended his professional record to ten straight victories - six by way of knockout with a second round stoppage of Konstantin Alexandrov at famous boxing venue York Hall, Bethnal Green, on Saturday. The former Hockwell Ring ABC pugilist’s latest triumph came days after he starred in a #saveourtown video to pledge his support for the action group where he announced: “If I don’t get a title by the end of the year, I’ll be very disappointed. “That’s what I’m boxing for, to make a name here, to be known in my town and to be at the top of my game.” A Steve Goodwin-managed rising star, who also signed to former world heavyweight champion David Haye’s Hayemaker Promotions in July, Udofia is a Hatters fan, having taken Luton to his heart since moving to the UK from Nigeria as an eight-year-old. “Luton means everything to me, Luton is

win a title at Power Court, that’s where the after party is going to be.” Lutonians and #saveourtown supporters are still awaiting a new date from Luton Borough Council for a planning decision to be made on the Newlands Park and Power Court proposals after the applications were submitted more than two years ago. The plans, which will regenerate the town centre, providing £250million a year for the local economy and 10,000 new jobs, are being objected to by Capital and Regional, the owners of The Mall shopping centre. But with bars, restaurants, offices, homes, leisure and community facilities, public spaces and high-end retail included in the proposals, Udofia said: “I can see nothing wrong in supporting the town or all the all the establishments around here. I can’t see anything bad about this place. This is where I call home.”

home,” said the boxer, nickmaked Lightning. “I always wear the (Hatters) shirt. I wear it out to fights. “For Luton to move to a ground with that much capacity, if everything goes perfect in my career, like I’m imagining and dreaming it will, then my manager and I have spoken about it, about a year ago, of having a homecoming fight in Luton. “It would be a dream. Can you imagine headlining in your own town, in your own town’s football club stadium? In Power Court? Linus Udofia headline for a world title? I couldn’t think of anything better.” Udofia also has his eye on a proposed 1,800-capacity music venue, which is also planned for Power Court, and he said: “After I

The #saveourtown campaign group took part in a third consecutive successful weekend engagement event in Luton town centre on Saturday.

Calling for regeneration not stagnation, volunteers were this time around Silver Street and Bute Street, spreading the campaign message to Lutonians, shoppers, businesses and Luton Town Football Club supporters on their way to the 1-0 League One victory over Bristol Rovers. Continuing their quest to gather more support and raise awareness of the transformational possibilities presented by the Newlands Park and Power Court proposals, #saveourtown volunteer Trish Brazier said: “We were pleased to talk to more local businesses in the town, who pledged their support for the cause and proudly displayed our posters in their windows. “We also had people chanting ‘Save Our Town’ when they saw us, while others were telling us to ‘keep up the good work’. And we were also able to speak to some people who had not heard about the plans and the campaign before. The reaction was really positive.” Messages of support for #saveourtown are also coming in from all over the world. This week alone they arrived from France, Thailand and Melbourne, Australia.

Council prosecutes flytipper £300k to YMCA for repeatedly offending A RePeAT waste offender was sentenced at Luton Magistrates Court on Tuesday, after a member of the public found waste with his name on it dumped in Millfield Lane, Caddington. This was the second prosecution by Central Bedfordshire Council against Mr Corey Ashleigh-John (also known as Korey Ashleigh), of Tinsley Close, Luton, who was found guilty in March 2018 of three waste offences relating to two littering offences, for which he received a total of £2,846 in fines and costs. Then just weeks after he received the fine, a local resident was walking

along Millfield Lane in Caddington when they saw several items of waste dumped on the ground with his name on it. The resident examined and photographed the waste and then reported it to the council. When Mr Ashleigh-John attended court on Tuesday, August 28, he pleaded guilty to failing to respond to information requested by the council (Section 110 environment Act 1995). The court ordered him to pay a fine of £120, pay a contribution towards costs of £120, and a victim surcharge of £30. Councillor Budge Wells, our Deputy executive Member for

Community Services, said: “We would like to thank to the member of the public that took the photo evidence, as this assisted us in securing a successful prosecution. “We have a zero-tolerance attitude toward fly-tipping and waste offences in Central Bedfordshire and we will not hesitate to prosecute and fine those who harm our borough. “Members of the public can help us to reduce crime, nuisance and antisocial behaviour by reporting any incidents to our customer services team on 0300 300 8302 or by emailing customers@centralbedfordshire. gov.uk.”

A CHARITY with premises in Bedfordshire has been awarded nearly £300,000 towards activities which combat the causes of homelessness in local young people. The YMCA already helps 100s of people of all ages off the county streets each year and into safe accommodation. But its Fun 4 Young People (F4YP) is designed to stop people ending up on the streets in the first place. So impressed has the Big Lottery organisation been with the charities work in Bedfordshire that is has awarded the project £299,117 over three years. “Heading towards living on the streets often begins in unhappy homes. By mitigating several of the risk factors associated with family breakdown and increasing protective factors in the lives of children and young people, we are reducing the potential for them to become displaced from their families and eventually homeless, said Paul Hunt YMCA Bedfordshire CeO, “Approx 85% of our residents aged 16-25 state that a family breakdown was a catalyst for their homelessness and of the six main risk factors associated with family breakdown the first two focus on disengagement with school. Our F4YP programme looks to tackle these risk factors head on by helping support marginalised, disadvantaged 5-16-year-old children , young people and their peers through after school and holiday clubs. “This funding could save millions of pounds in the costs of social and health care which arise when people become homeless and their lives spiral downwards.” F4YP seek to make their session very affordable with 75% of placements going to disadvantaged and marginalised pupils. Fees to attend all their sessions are purposefully kept low with some after school activities only charging £2.30. Of course it means that these activities are immensely popular with parents who cannot afford private clubs, or feel excluded from other more expensive activities. “We work with schools serving the most challenging areas and encourage pupils to join our clubs. We aim for our courses to be accessible, great fun and enhance the learning appetites for those that attend. Subject tutors get the opportunity to showcase elements of the subjects that may not always be taught in the classroom until a later age, for example science experiments, music and drama. The 12-1 reading sessions we provide have been fantastically successful and help children to look forward to school lessons they previously disengaged from” said Sophie Stock, F4YP Youth Services Lead.

NOW A NEW CHALLENGE TO LOCAL DEMOCRACY! THE Government and Local Authorities have acted together to create yet another QUANGO – ‘The Central Growth Board’.

“It will enable them to push through massive developments along the Oxford – Milton Keynes – Bedford – Cambridge Corridor without the consent of local people, crushing local democracy,” says the Campaign for the Protection of Rural england (CPRe).

The Mayor of Bedford, Dave Hodgson and the Leader of Central Bedfordshire Council, James Jamieson, both committed to the NIC plans, have joined the Central Growth Board.

The Central Growth Board has been formed to ensure that controversial Oxford – Cambridge developments across the local authority areas covered by the South east Midlands Local enterprise Partnership (SeMLeP) – Bedfordshire, Milton Keynes, Luton, Aylesbury Vale and Northamptonshire plus the rest of Buckinghamshire, are pushed through without debate. Similar ‘Growth Boards’ are being created in

Oxfordshire and Cambridgeshire. A spokesperson for CPRe Bedfordshire said: “CPRe Bedfordshire believe that the work of the new “Central Growth Board” is already underway with controversial planning applications and projects being pushed through with minimal consultation with the people of Bedfordshire. examples are: The Expansion of Cranfield Airport to become a major airport for private jets – some very large. To be called London Cranfield. New runway and ground facilities include a 300 bed hotel – doubling the number of aircraft movements from 20,000 to 40,000 per year increasing passenger numbers to 70,000 per year.

This planning application was quietly approved by Central Bedfordshire Council (CBC) in June 2018 without consulting the many Town & Parish Councils in Bedford Borough which will be directly under the flight path or otherwise impacted e.g. by air pollution, increased traffic etc. Villages like Wootton (Bedford Borough) to the north and west of Bedford town which will be heavily impacted by the very large increase in car and HGV traffic due to the airport expansion. Several north Bedfordshire villages are directly under the flight path. Strangely, for a strategic application of this

SLIPPED UNDER THE RADAR

type, it appears that Bedford Borough Council itself was also not consulted even though Cranfield Airport is on the border between the two LA’s. This despite the fact that The Mayor of Bedford, Dave Hodgson knew all about plans to expand Cranfield airport. We have written to The Mayor of Bedford and the Leader of CBC, James Jamieson asking for the reason behind their undermining of the local democratic process and what they will do to put it right. Proposed new A6 – M1 Link Road which will slice through the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and impact historic woodlands. Details of the controversial route of the A6-M1 link road was mysteriously absent from CBC’s Local Plan 2035 which was presented to Government for approval a few months ago. Then “out of the blue” on July 10th, Central Bedfordshire Council (CBC) put the route of the new road forward for “pre-application consultation” with local people at a number of drop-in sessions across the area. These sessions were held during the summer holidays (the first starting on the 17July and the last on the 30th July) when many residents were away on holiday. Those residents who were available were given just seven days’ notice of the first drop-in event!

Flitwick Church offers a wide open welcome

ST PeTeR AND PAUL’S CHURCH had a special double celebration on Sunday 16th September, attended by over 100 people including the Bishop of St Albans, the Right Reverend Alan Smith.

The first reason for celebration was that the congregation has taken the step of opening the Church building on a daily basis from 9 am to 3 pm, so that visitors or people from the town can enjoy the peace and quiet there. St Peter and St Paul’s is the only grade one listed building in Flitwick, and has occupied the site on Church Road for over 800 years. Vicar, Rev Lucy Davis told us, “For many of us, life is very pressured, hours are scarce and it’s difficult to find time out. There is something very special about coming into this ancient building, something very special about the atmosphere of calm that all sorts of people find helpful. They might want to pray or light a candle, or just sit and reflect away from it all. In his sermon, Bishop Alan reminded us that our God is a God of open arms not locked door. We want people to be able to enjoy the Church all week long, not just on Sundays, because God is with us all week long, not just on Sundays.” There has been careful planning behind the scenes to make it possible to open the building, from putting up emergency exit notices to locking away all the items of value. Rev Lucy commented, “I am delighted that the Church community has taken this brave and imaginative step, which is counter cultural in many ways. “We hope that people in Flitwick will really enjoy the freedom of access to Church, helping us to build on the very positive relationships that exist here between the Church and the local community.”

The local community has already shown its huge support for the Church in a recent appeal, raising over £25,000 to repair the historic Lych Gate which stands at the Church’s entrance. “This was a double celebration,” Rev Lucy told us, “and one way of saying thank you to all our donors.” The Lych Gate was built over 100 years by the wife of a former vicar, Rev Francis Ashpitel, and among the congregation at the celebration service was his great, great granddaughter.

Other guests included the mayor of Flitwick, Cllr Gareth Mackey, and many individuals who had given towards the repair work because of an association with the Church through Christenings, Weddings and Funerals. The specialist repairs to the Lych Gate will ensure the future of the iconic gate for generations of people in Flitwick yet to come, welcoming them into the Church which has opened its doors to them. Best ever GCSE Results at Harlington (again!) and Best Upper School in Bedfordshire (again!)

eVeRYONe is absolutely delighted with another wonderful set of exam results this year. GCSe results at Harlington were again superb and represent “Best ever” performance for the second year running, particularly as GCSes and A levels are based on new, tougher specifications.

It was a pleasure to see so many high grades. By any measure the results are impressive. Harlington is at least 20% above the national average and, when the comparable results are made public in the autumn, we are likely to be 10% above other Central

Mid Beds Labour endorses ‘Six Tests of Brexit’

MID BeDFORDSHIRe Labour Party has recently expressed its support for the Shadow Cabinet’s six tests of any eU withdrawal agreement and new relationship with the eU proposed by the government, and has sent an urgent message to Jeremy Corbyn, urging Labour MPs to vote against any proposal which does not meet these tests.

Find out about plans for a new crematorium in Steppingley CeNTRAL Bedfordshire Council is looking at building a new and contemporary crematorium behind the Steppingley Hospital in Steppingley near Flitwick. Ahead of any planning application, the council is sharing its early plans to seek public feedback. There is currently no crematorium in Central Bedfordshire, so residents are having to travel to other areas which are close to full capacity. The proposal is for a crematorium on agricultural land at the rear of Steppingley Hospital, with access from Fordfield Road. The proposed location is well tucked away from sight and there would be additional landscaping, so that the building would not impact on the landscape. You can find out more about the proposal online at: www.centralbed-

fordshire.gov.uk/crematorium The council is also holding a public drop-in event on Monday 24 September from 4:30 –6:30pm at The Rufus Centre, Steppingley Rd, Flitwick, MK45 1AH. Councillor eugene Ghent, executive Member for Assets and Housing Delivery, said: “Nationally we have an aging population; people are living longer and that’s no different in Central Bedfordshire. We also know that Central Bedfordshire is an area that is set to grow. Over the next 20 years we are expecting around 40,000 new homes to be built. “Unfortunately, more people also means an increasing demand for crematorium and mortuary services. We want to make sure our residents have a local service to use at what can be an important and often distressing time.”

Jail after high-speed car chase A MAN from Shefford was jailed for eight months and disqualified from driving for two years after driving dangerously during a police pursuit in July. Harry Webb, of New Road, was also convicted of possession of class B drugs after officers found cannabis in his car.

Webb was spotted doing around 60mph in a 30mph zone at 11.55pm on the High Street, Arlesey on 15 July. Webb failed to stop and was pursued to Stotfold, Henlow, Meppershall and Shillington. PC Chris Thompson, said: “Webb had no regard for any other motorists or pedestrians.”

Drug dealer gets jailed A LUTON man has been sentenced to nine-and-a-half years in prison after officers found a firearm, live ammunition and nearly £30,000 worth of cocaine and heroin in his flat. Zoan Youngsam, of Midland Road, pleaded guilty at Luton Crown Court on Thursday, September 13, 2018, to possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply, following the raid by police in February. The 34-year-old also pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm, ammunition and criminal property. Officers executed a search

warrant under Section 8 of the Police and Criminal evidence Act at Youngsam’s address in the early hours of 20 February. They found a handgun, 420 rounds of ammunition, drugs and £2,000 in cash. The cocaine and heroin seized in the warrant had a potential street value of £27,000. When police searched the property, they found a rucksack hidden under the kitchen units, behind the kickboard, which contained the live ammunition, the handgun and its internal working parts.

Mixed fortunes for athletes

BeDFORDSHIRe and Luton’s Schools’ athletes, enjoyed mixed fortunes at the english School’s Athletics Combined events Championships held in Bedford last weekend. In the Inter Boys (U17) Octathlon, Cranfield’s Stephen Simmons (Bedford School) improved his personal best score to 4395 points with personal bests coming in three of his eight events (Discus 35.67M; hurdles 13.75 sec; and Shot 11.53M) , but lost ground in high jump and on the track. His 15th place out of 40 starters represented a good return for

someone in the first year of the age group. Following a stellar season, during which she won the silver medal in the english Schools high jump and an international vest to go with it, Biggleswade’s Leonie Brunning (St Thomas More) struggled to find her outstanding form of earlier in the year. Her score of 3790 points saw her place 26th in a field of 43 athletes in the Inter Girls (U17) heptathlon. Leonie is also in the lower half of the age group and will be looking to move up places next year when the event will be held in exeter.

We talk with Danni Nicholls ahead of her appearance at the Stables

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 20 2018 — 25

Headlining on Jim Marshall Stage at The Stables, Wavendon, next month is Danni Nicholls. Her November 10 concert will be her first time headlining on the venue’s main stage and she is super excited to be there. Danni is a former pupil of Mark Rutherford School, Bedford, she describes her music a mixture of Americana and country. Danni says her biggest musical influence was her grandmother, who had a love of Rock’n’roll and American country music. Not that her parents weren’t musically inclined, it’s just they were more into dancing. Country music has become hugely popular in the UK, championed by ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris, whose Radio 2 show commands a huge following. Bob says: “I absolutely love the elegance and beauty of her music.” Danni was asked who she would like to perform with: “ Johnny Cash, if he were alive, he’s not, so it has to be Brandi Carlile.” Danni has made several trips to Nashville, where she teamed up with some of the best writers and musicians in the business, to co-write and record her songs. She has released two studio albums, ‘A Little Redemption’ in 2013 and ‘Mocking Bird Lane’ in 2015, there’s also a ‘Vintage TV’ live album. The next studio album is set for release in the Spring of 2019. Her favoured Americana songs are the grittier, dirtier numbers. She frequently quotes Jed Hilly, CeO of the Americana Music Association: “If you can taste the dirt through your ears,” as her mantra. Here’s your chance to win both of Danni’s studio albums, on CD. Just answer the following questions, email them before October 24, to: competition@rosetta publishing.com with ‘Danni’ in subject line. 1) What secondary school did Danni attend? 2) What UK music festival has Danni recently performed at?

Ginger Wildheart Bedford Esquires Wednesday 26th September

Ginger Wildheart is an english rock guitartist, singer and songwriter. He was guitarist in The Quireboys from 1987-89 and a year later formed rock band The Wildhearts. Alongside this he has had a solo career, and is now heading out on the road to support his recent album ‘Ghost in the Tanglewood’ released by Graphite Records in March 2018. “While leaning towards country music, my fairly unavoidable accent means that the songs come off less Willie Nelson and more Bobby Thompson, but every lyric is purely heartfelt and every song is as true a

TOTAL DOMINATION BUT ONLY ONE GOAL by Mark Wood

LUTON TOWN BRISTOL ROVERS

1 (0) 0 (0)

ON THE SCORE SHEET

IMPRESSIVE Luton dominated throughout against Bristol Rovers at Kenilworth Road on Saturday and somehow only ran out 1-0 victors thanks to Andrew Shinnie’s second half winner.

The Hatters created chance-afterchance and would have run out much larger winners but for keeper Jack Bonham’s heroics which kept the Pirates in the game.

When not misplacing simple passes, Town were playing well and went close again on 14 minutes when Grant rose highest to head Shinnie’s tantalising cross goalwards only for Bonham to palm his effort away. James Clarke was then rightly booked for a clear piece of simulation in the build-up. Midway through the half the Hatters thought they had taken the lead when, following brilliant build-up play, Dan Potts whipped in a dangerous cross which ran through to the far post and Jack Stacey did superbly to turn it home, only to see the goal ruled out for a push by James Collins seconds before. Midfielders Shinnie and Grant seemed to be linking up telepathically and, after more great interchange play, Shinnie teased the ball into the box, but Collins’ header was right at the keeper. A quickfire break saw the Hatters in again with 11 minutes of the half left as elliot Lee

BOOKED

eleven minutes of injury-time was added and Luton should have wrapped it up when Collins slipped Shinnie through but Bonham again saved with his legs. More fantastic defending from Pearson saw him turn a dangerous centre over his own bar, while in the 102ndminute a super mazy run by substitute James Justin saw him tee up Collins whose shot was somehow kept out, but it mattered not as the referee’s whistle followed immediately to seal victory. Hatters: James Shea, Dan Potts, Sonny Bradley, Matty Pearson, Jack Stacey, elliot Lee, Andrew Shinnie (Alan Sheehan 90+7), Glen Rea (C), Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu, Jorge Grant (eunan O’Kane 75, James Justin 88), James Grant. Subs not used: Alan McCormack, Harry Cornick, Aaron Jarvis, Harry Isted. Pirates: Jack Bonham, Tom Lockyer (C), Tony Craig, ed Upson, Ollie Clarke, Stefan Payne (Gavin Reilly 54), Chris Lines, James Clarke, Kyle Bennett (Alex Jakubiak 72), Sam Matthews (Tom Nichols 27), Joe Martin. Subs not used: Daniel Leadbitter, Tom Broadbent, Adam Smith, Stuart Sinclair. Referee: Robert Lewis. Assistant Referees: Bhupinder Gill and Christopher Wade. Fourth Official: Nigel Lugg. Booked: James Clarke 14; Shinnie 50; Jones 90+10. Attendance: 8,912 (519 Rovers). Hatters MOM: Andrew Shinnie – controlled, classy performance with the winner to boot.

SAVED

The only sour note for the Hatters came late in the second half when substi- was released on the overlap and his curler tute eunan O’Kane was stretchered off was beaten away with Grant firing the rebound wastefully over from the edge of the with an horrific suspected leg break.

Victory kept the Hatters in 11thspot and just four points off the League One play-offs. Town had a great chance to take the lead on five minutes when Matty Pearson had a free-header from Jorge Grant’s corner, but sent it over the bar when he should have at least hit the target.

and saw another good effort beaten away. Fine centre forward play from Collins saw his header put Lee through but again Bonham came to Rovers’ rescue to turn his effort past the post. On the very rare occasions Rovers did attack Luton were quick to close them down, Pearson doing well to take the sting out of Ollie Clarke’s long-range effort. Brilliant work by Shinnie saw Luton break at pace with 10 minutes to go but, with Luton four-on-one, substitute eunan O’Kane overran the ball and he and Ollie Clarke went in for a full-blooded challenge. The tackle left O’Kane in agony and play was quickly stopped with the Leeds loanee eventually stretchered off to warm applause with a serious-looking injury.

Andrew Shinnie

box. It was all Luton as Lee again beat his man and sent the ball to the far post which PellyRuddock Mpanzu volleyed goalwards only for it to hit Bonham to keep the scores level. With Luton completely dominant they somehow finished the half goalless despite twice almost taking the lead in the last minute. Shinnie threaded a wonderful ball through to Mpanzu to leave him one-on-one with the keeper but could only fire straight into his legs, before Rea sent a superb longrange curler whistling just wide.

A clever free-kick routine at the start of the second half saw a Bristol defender just beat Potts to Mpanzu’s far-post cross before Shinnie was booked for a foul as he snuffed out a threatening Bristol break.

An Mpanzu blast was bravely blocked by two defenders as Town continued to threaten, while a rare chance for Rovers saw Tom Nichols head over the bar on the hour. Town finally got their reward two minutes later though when Grant’s free-kick was only partially cleared and Shinnie controlled before drilling decisively into the bottom corner. Lee then skipped to the edge of the box
