TOWN SUPPORTERS’ TRUST Chartered FE status LUTON & LOYAL LUTON STATEMENT for Bedford College Double standards BeDForD College has been granted membership of the Chartered institution for Further education, under its royal Charter. Principal and Chief executive of Bedford College, ian Pryce CBe says: “we are delighted and proud to to take our place among so many exceptional organisations. we want to work with others to raise the profile of the further education sector, promote its professionalism and raise standards further to give everyone in our community a better future and help individuals and employers achieve their ambition. the royal Charter and the creation of the institution is the most visible signal of the national importance of further education since incorporation in 1993. we look forward to helping increase the awareness of the force for good that is further education.” Bedford College can trace its history back to 1892 with the creation of Bedford training College for teachers. Since then there have been several additions and changes to the provision, including the acquisition of Shuttleworth College and Bedford training Group, and a 2017 merger with tresham College. all of these changes have served to strengthen and widen the educational provision of what is now the Bedford College Group, which serves almost twenty thousand students and apprentices each year. in 2008 Bedford College became

the first general Fe college to be awarded the 5 Star european Quality Mark (eFQM), as well as winning the National award for leadership. in 2011 the College won the teS leadership award, and in 2017 the Bedfordshire business community voted Bedford College the best large organisation in the county of Bedfordshire. the process of applying for Membership of the Chartered institution for Further education actually helped Bedford College to bring people together and the success of the application is seen as a success for the whole organisation and has had a hugely positive impact on staff. ian Pryce added: “as a Chartered provider we feel part of a very special set of institutions, committed not to being boastful but to promoting the whole sector and the work it does. the Charter gives the sector a profile and independence it has not had before and creates a space for us to be independent-minded.” Dan wright, Ceo and Secretary of the Chartered institution for Further education said: “Bedford College is a shining example of excellence in further education and we are delighted to welcome the College as a new Member of the Chartered institution for Further education. we look forward to working together to promote and elevate the sector as a whole.” http://www.bedford.ac.uk

and dirty tricks by Kevin Harper

Yet more double standards and dirty tricks by Capital & regional – determined to block and delay the regeneration of our town of luton. we are appalled yet again by the latest hypocrisy shown by Mall owners Capital & regional, and their advisers, in their attempt to block and delay plans for the regeneration of luton with Power Court and Newlands Park – plans which they have stated they will try and ‘kick into the long grass’ for their own benefit. in the latest news we discover that one of C&r’s key advisers- turley associates – have concluded that there would be a “a significant adverse impact” on luton town centre if the Newlands Park development went ahead. this statement is included in a package of documents delivered at the last minute (another of their delaying tactics) to luton Borough Council. this should be the future for the town of luton Yet turley reached completely different conclusions about the impact of edge-of-town retail on luton town centre when hired by a client with a different agenda. acting for the company wanting to build new retail units in North Houghton regis, turley concluded that even in the worst case scenario the retail would not have “a serious adverse impact.” in fact turley went further and urged luton Borough Council to reach a decision on the developments “that is an overall balancing of positive and negative impacts.” So why the complete change of view? Could it be that money talks? Can we believe anything that is being said by C&r and it advisers, or is it just a case that corporates with deep pockets, like C&r, can buy the answers they want? this is just the latest in a long line of ‘dirty tricks’ let’s take a quick look at some of what C&r have said and done of late… l C&r think it’s okay to have two cinemas in Hemel Hempstead but there should only be one in luton (funnily enough, it’s them who are looking to develop the Hemel cinema). l C&r say it’s okay for its own ilford Mall to trade alongside the westfield shopping centre, but not for luton Mall to trade in the same town as Newlands Park. l C&r employ an adviser who accused people who object to new developments of being NiMBYs yet who now opposes developments which will regenerate luton. l C&r use a Pr company with a principal whose previous company was exposed as producing false letters and other ‘dirty tricks’ by the evening Standard and Channel 4 ‘Dispatches’. l C&r said there should be an Urban Park at Power Court then completely changed their minds. l C&r produced no new plans for regeneration of luton town centre then came up with a sketchy ‘back of fag packet’ idea at the last minute for comments on Power Court and Newlands Park. l C&r claim that they are about to commit £millions to enhancing luton town centre but we see no signs of this investment. l C&r claim that Newlands Park is a retail development which will damage the town centre when in fact it is a mixed use development which will complement the town centre offering. l and now we see C&r advisers turley advisers claiming that a new retail development at Houghton regis wouldn’t impact luton town centre but Newlands Park would. amazing. So who should we believe? we prefer to trust the conclusions of an independent study commissioned by luton Borough Council which is much more upbeat about the proposed plans for Newlands Park and Power Court, and a bright new future for our town. we prefer to support plans which will bring 10,000+ jobs to the town and an annual boost of £250million to the local economy. we prefer decisions about the town to be made by democratically elected representatives of luton’s communities rather than a faceless corporation which only cares about its own profits. we prefer regeneration to stagnation. we’re not fooled by you, C&r. and neither are the good people of luton. Shortstown boy receives Bedford property closed three-year football ban following drugs warrant a 17-year-old boy from Shortstown, near Bedford, has been handed a court order banning him from attending football matches, as we continue to clamp down on football-related disorder and violence. the boy was made the subject of a three-year Football Banning order following a hearing at luton Magistrates’ Court on tuesday, September 18, 2018. the order bans him from attending matches anywhere in the country for three years, and he is also prevented from travelling abroad during international matches and tournaments. PC richard Howlett, football banning officer, said: “He received

the banning order for a number of incidents of anti-social behaviour whilst following luton town. “we will not tolerate those who use attendance at football matches as an excuse for disorder. Banning people who behave this way makes it safer for everyone to enjoy the game; football is a family sport, and everyone should be able to support their team without fear of violence or intimidation. “this should serve as a clear message to anyone who feels it’s acceptable to inflict their anti-social behaviour on other football fans, the vast majority of who are well behaved.”

Four charged with Bedford murder FoUr people have been charged with murder after the death of a 16year-old boy in Bedford. Cemeren Yilmaz, of roman Paddock, Harrold, died after being attacked in ashmead road on Sunday, September 16, 2018. aaron Miller, 19, of tavistock Street, Bedford, and three 15-year-old boys from Bedford, who cannot be

named for legal reasons, have been charged with murder in connection to the incident. a 40-year-old man from Bedford has been released by police and will face no further action. a 19-year-old man from Bedford will face no further action in terms of the murder enquiry, but remains under investigation for drug offences.

A PROPERTY closure order has been issued, after a successful drugs warrant at a property in Paddlers Court, Bedford on Sunday, September 16, 2018. Officers carried out the warrant following a number of reports of drug dealing and antisocial behaviour in the area. No drugs were found during the search, however, items involved in the preparation and use of drugs were discovered. In addition, numerous deal bags containing the remnants of Class A and Class B drugs were located, along with an adapted pole stick knife and an imitation firearm.

A hearing at Luton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, September 18, saw a three-month property closure order granted. PC Emily Keech said: “We remain committed to working with residents to tackle the most serious issues impacting our communities, such as drug use, as these type of crimes have longstanding detrimental effects. “This successful warrant and subsequent property closure would not have been possible without the support of our partners agencies, and we will continue the multiagency approach to keep our communities safe.”

Brothel and a drugs den closed tHe police have successfully closed two addresses linked to drugs and prostitution in luton last week. on Monday, September 17, officers visited a property in russell Street, luton, after a report was received from a neighbouring force regarding the welfare of a woman thought to be at the address. at the address, officers discovered evidence indicating the house was being used as a brothel. after an investigation, a 24-hour

closure notice was granted, which was extended to three months by luton Magistrates’ Court on tuesday, September 18. in addition, also on tuesday, two people were arrested in connection with drugs offences and a closure order was issued, following a raid at a property in warton Green. a substantial quantity of drugs and cash was seized from the premises, which is also now subject to a three-month closure order.

tHe Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire (BCH) Dog Unit has taken part in a professional photoshoot by katrina wilson Dog Photography Bedfordshire in order to produce a calendar and help raise money for two charities. the calendar will feature some of the team’s incredible crime-fighting canines and is sure to prove popular with any dog lovers out there. None of the featured photos will have been seen before, so this is a unique opportunity to not only support the unit but also two charities that look after rescue animals. the funds raised will be split between German Shepherd rescue elite and luna animal rescue. German Shepherd rescue elite looks to rescue and rehome German Shepherds across the country, whilst educating people about the breed. Bedfordshire-based luna animal rescue has been working for around five years to help rehome dogs, cats and small animals predominantly in the South east of the Uk. PC lindsey Cox, from the BCH Dog Unit and who handles PD Harley, said: “we’re hoping this is going to be a fun way of raising

money for two deserving animal charities. “the support we receive from the public has always been overwhelming and we’d be incredibly grateful if this could extend to our aim of raising funds for the rescue centres. “as there is a limited number of calendars, we are asking for a minimum donation of £8 per calendar, and any larger donations will obviously be received with our sincere thanks.” if you wish to support the unit’s fundraising by pre-ordering a calendar please make your donation via PayPal

tHe Higgins Bedford will celebrate this year’s Black History Month by hosting a variety of events and an exhibition commemorating the 70th anniversary of the empire windrush arriving with people from the Caribbean to Britain. the museum presents ‘Paved with Gold’: Bedford’s windrush Generation, a fascinating exhibition exploring the stories of people settling in Bedford from 1948, which will open on 6th october 2018 and is free to visit. this exhibition will highlight the windrush Generation’s journey to Bedford, where they settled, and their employment opportunities. it will also explore their legacy of endurance and determination through the challenges they faced and the contributions they made to the community. as part of the exhibition, the Higgins Bedford has been interviewing members of the windrush Generation who settled in Bedford to recognise the impact they have made in rebuilding the town after the Second world war. the Higgins Bedford has been working in partnership with the Higgins Black History Panel, the University of Hertfordshire, retired Caribbean Nurses association of Bedford, Nubian teachings and members of the public to collect and showcase the stories, artefacts, and photographs presented in this exhibition. She settled in Bedford in 1974 and enjoyed a career at Bedford’s North wing and South wing Hospital. ‘i’ve had a good career in Bedford. i’ve worked as a staff nurse and a midwife, serving the community well by delivering babies and caring for the elderly. i’ve enjoyed both aspects of the profession tremendously’. rudolph rockhead came to Britain and resided in Bedford in 1960 to continue his career as a bricklayer and builder. He helped to build houses, schools, churches, shops, and Bedford Police Station. ‘i arrived in Britain in 1960 as a builder, and that’s what i have done in all my years here. to see families living in, and enjoying the houses that i’ve built makes me more satisfied than anything else’

Trust gives helping hand to University students

oN wednesday September12, local grantmaking charity the Harpur trust welcomed this year’s university bursary students, their parents and some of their teachers, for an event to celebrate the start of their university journey. also in attendance were three graduates from a previous cohort who returned to meet and talk to the recipients about their own student experiences. 37 local sixth formers applied for the coveted bursary places which are awarded annually to 16 Bedford Borough based students from low income families. the selected students attended Biddenham Upper School, Bedford academy, kimberley College, St thomas More School and Sharnbrook academy, and they are preparing to embark on a wide range of courses including Criminology, architecture, law, Sociology and Finance. each student receives a total of £3600 spread in instalments over the duration of their course, and this money can be used to help with living expenses and general costs such as books, trips, transport or any other expenses they might encounter. this year, the trust is also piloting its first postgraduate award which was allocated to Demi leNette-Dawson who is going to study Veterinary Science at the royal Veterinary College at the University of london. Demi was previously a recipient of the University Bursary scheme and recently graduated from Surrey University with a 1st Class degree in Veterinary BioSciences. She receives an award of £4000 to help with the cost of her course. Grants Committee members Jenifer Sauboorah, and Debborah inskip were present to announce and

give out the awards. Jennifer, a trustee and Chair of the Grants Committee for the Harpur trust, spoke to the students about her own experience as a recipient of a grant by the trust 20 years ago. Guest speaker ryan Gray Programme Manager and National Social Media Co-ordinator for Uprising congratulated the students before introducing the work of his own charity. Uprising is a national youth leadership development organisation recognised at Government-level as a pioneering charity championing the critical issues surrounding diversity, social mobility and equality. their work provides routes to leadership and

employment for 16-25 year olds who have talent, but lack opportunity. the trust brought Uprising to Bedford in 2011 and has funded it ever since. emma Cook, Grants Programmes officer for the Harpur trust, who co-ordinates the project, welcomed the students said “today marks the start of a relationship with the Harpur trust which we hope will be a long and positive one. we know from experience that many of the students who have been awarded our bursaries in the past have gone on to great things, and we look forward to hearing updates from them as they progress on their education journey”.

amanda whittington's play the thrill of love dramatises the true story of ruth ellis, the last woman to be hanged in Britain, and takes a fresh look at the woman behind the headlines. Directors notes: on the morning of wednesday 18th July 1955 a crowd of over a thousand people gathered outside Holloway prison. inside the prison preparations were being made for ruth ellis to be hanged. Many called for her reprieve, others prayed for her soul. as the clock struck 9.00am, the appointed time for the execution, they fell silent. Brilliantly written, set to a sound track of superb songs originally by Billie Holiday. the ending you know: but as in real life there’s comedy as well as tragedy here.

Danni, a former pupil of Mark rutherford School Bedford, describes her music as ‘americana’. So what exactly is americana? “it’s a melting pot of american roots styles” says Danni who goes on to quote Jed Hilly, Ceo of the americana Music association who says you’ll know americana “if you can taste the dirt through your ears,”. one of Danni’s biggest musical influences is her grandmother, who has always had a love of country and rock n roll “i was brought up on this stuff; Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, elvis. i have mixed some other genres and influences in to create my own sound”. the past year has seen Bedford born and based Danni Nicholls supporting the legendary Shakin’ Stevens on 28 dates of his major Uk tour, opening for lucinda williams, the Secret Sisters and playing prestigious festivals all over the world, the most recent being at the long road Festival. Danni’s album ‘Mockingbird lane’ was nominated ‘Uk album of the Year’ and Danni herself ‘Uk artist of the Year’ by the americana Music association plus ‘Best Country/Folk artist’ for the Unsigned Music awards. Bob Harris, radio 2 “absolutely love(s) the elegance and beauty of her music” with a growing reputation as one of the Uk’s leading artists. Danni was asked who she would like to perform with: “ideally Johnny Cash, but alas, that’s not going to happen, so it has to be Brandi Carlile.” Danni has made several trips to Nashville, tennessee teaming up with some of the best writers and musicians in the business, to co-write and record her songs. She has released two studio albums so far, ‘a little redemption’ (2013) and ‘Mockingbird lane’ (2015) Danni has also made a live album in conjunction with Vintage tV. Winger – LuaLua signs for Luton tHe Hatters have made a new signing on wednesday, September 26, with winger kazenga lualua putting pen to paper on a contract until the end of the season. the 27-year-old former Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove albion player is a free agent after leaving Sunderland at the end of last season, so is able to sign outside of the transfer window. kazenga lualua puts pen to paper on a contract until the end of the season in the trophy room at kenilworth road lualua has been training with Nathan Jones’ squad for over a week and featured in the development side’s Central league game with aFC wimbledon last tuesday. the manager has previously worked with lualua at Brighton, where he spent seven years and made the bulk of his 228 appearances in a career that has also included loan spells at Doncaster rovers and Championship side Queens Park rangers. Jones told lutontown.co.uk: “i’ve known kazenga for a long time having worked with him at Brighton, and he’s a fantastic talent. He has something that not many have, totally different from what we have here. kazenga lualua in action for the Hatters in the development squad's goalless draw with aFC wimbledon last week “we knew he was available and i’ve tried to get this done for a little while now, so it’s not just been recently. i spoke to kazenga and his agent before the season started, but the fact that we’ve been able to get him in and persuade him to come

here is a good coup for us. “He’s a real attacking footballer and we know which role he’s going to play for us because we don’t generally play with wingers, although we do at times. He’s a quick, powerful, potent attacking player which is something that is in rare supply – and is something we felt we needed.” kazenga lualua comes on as a substitute for Brighton, watched by then-Seagulls assistantmanager Nathan Jones lualua, brother of former Newcastle and Blackpool striker lomana, said: “it’s good to sign

until the end of the season, to get some game time and enjoy my football. “From the first day i came the boys were really nice to me, and it’s been really good. “i know Nathan from Brighton, and he’s a very good coach. He’s good at what he does, so it made it so easy for me to come in and train with the boys here. i know Joaquin Gomez and Glen rea as well from our time together at Brighton, so i’ve settled in very well.” kazenga will wear squad number 25 at kenilworth road!

SUCCESS FOR SANDY’S BEN TUCK IN HIS DEBUT GT SEASON

aFter a nail biting end to the 2018 British Gt Championship, Ben tuck narrowly missed out on taking the British Gt4 title in his rookie season by a single point. in a race that featured yet another appearance by the safety car and a penalty pit stop each for both tuck and the championship leader, the provisional title swapped several times between them as they battled through the field. Donington Park is a regular season finale across British motorsport and as such it often serves up thrilling title deciders where anything and everything happens and has spectators and commentators alike reaching for the calculators to work out who needs to finish where for the title honours. the 2018 British Gt Championship did not disappoint, especially for the two Century Motorsport run BMw M4 Gt4s. Coming into the final round Ben tuck and his partner, Ben Green, were lying second in the championship after tuck made an heroic comeback drive in the #42 machine from 8th to 2nd in the second half of the previous race at Brands Hatch. that result brought them to within 10 points of the championship leader, Jack Mitchell in the sister #43 BMw, but also earned them a 15 second success penalty in the pits for the final round. with 10.5 point advantage on offer for a win over second place, a victory would guarantee the title for tuck and Green. anything less would rely on Mitchell having to finish much lower down the order. tuck and Mitchell had already engaged in several thrilling qualifying battles earlier in the season, so Saturday was poised perfectly to kick off the weekend’s excitement in the fight for the all important pole position.

in the first qualifying session tuck and Mitchell’s partners Green and McDonald went head to head, Green bettering McDonald by 1.5 seconds. in the second session tuck pulled out an astonishing lap as the session ended to come out on top making their combined times good enough for pole position. Mitchell and McDonald qualified 7th putting tuck and Green in prime position to claw back the 15 seconds extra delay they faced at the pit stop. in cool but dry conditions, Green started the race and gradually built up a lead of around 10 seconds over the #43 BMw until a safety car was called, this time due to oil on the track. However there was limited scope for their title rival’s car to close up due to several other Gt3 cars caught up in the following pack. after the safety car released the field four laps later, Green set about re-establishing the lead, finding the magic 15 seconds over their title rivals just before the pit stops. after a clean but agonisingly long stop, tuck rejoined the track in 6th and immediately put in laps a full 2 seconds faster than the #43 car in an effort to pull out enough of a gap to lead them after their pit stop. the strategy worked and the #43 emerged behind tuck, setting up a title chase to overtake as many cars as possible before the end of the race, to make up the 10 point deficit to the title leaders. However, 3 laps later the team were informed of an on track infringement committed before the pit stop which meant that tuck would have to

ASTONISHING LAP

return to the pits to serve a 10 second stop/go penalty sinking their title hopes. emerging from the pits for a second time, tuck found himself down in 11th position. refusing to give up, he set about making another epic comeback drive recovering a second every lap on the field. Fifteen laps later Mitchell in the #43 BMw was called into the pits for a 10 second stop/go penalty handing back a tenuous chance of the title to tuck and Green. Now the tables were turned and after the penalty stop with tuck now in 5th, Mitchell emerged in 9th, seemingly outside of the running, meaning that tuck was on course to take the championship by half a point from the #55 Ginetta crew ahead of him. But Mitchell could still take the title by making up one place if tuck failed to improve on 5th. with less than 15 minutes to go, Mitchell claimed the all important 8th position leaving tuck with a place to make to take the title back.

But with his next target several seconds away, tuck needed the car in front to fall back quickly or for Mitchell to have a problem. as the seconds ticked away neither seemed likely and the chequered flag signalled the end of the race with tuck crossing the line in 5th and Mitchell in 8th taking the title by 1 point. the title chance was always tight given their 15 second penalty to overcome but to come within 1 point of victory was an impressive comeback. the result also handed Century Motorsport and BMw Motorsport the team Championship title and a Drivers Championship 1-2 in their first season together. "Firstly massive congratulations to Jack, he's had a great season and we pushed him as hard as

LOSING BY ONE POINT

we could," said Ben after the race. "it's also a brilliant result for Century and for BMw in their debut year in British Gt with the M4. today they gave me probably the best car i've had all season, it was perfect for my entire stint. we've had no reliability issues at all, the car and the way Century and BMw prepare it have been brilliant". "i fought for everything within my control today, but in motor racing there are things you can't control and you've just got to deal with them” Ben continued. “i didn't really know what the points situation was, i was just pushing as hard as i could just in case something was to happen in front of us or with Jack. it was only after the chequered flag that they told me there was 1 point in it". “i came into this year as my first full season of Gt racing, with a new car, a new team and with no other testing or racing during the year, so to get 2nd in the championship against so many experienced professional drivers is something to be really happy about, especially because we were so close to taking the title. i think this year i’ve showed that i can turn up to a race and compete with the best.” "i’ve got to say a massive thanks to everyone who has helped to make this happen - sponsors, partners, family and friends. they have all been so supportive and i’m pleased that our partners have really seen the benefits of all the successes we’ve had this year”. Ben tuck racing is always looking for partners to join them on the next stage of Ben’s career.
