#SAVE OUR TOWN SAYS:

C&R’S PLAN “NOT WORTH THE PAPER IT’S WRITTEN ON”

A PLAN by The Mall’s owners to enhance the area surrounding its Luton shopping centre is “not worth the paper it’s written on”, says the #saveourtown campaign.

Capital & Regional, the retail property investment company which runs The Mall, has produced a document entitled ‘Reshaping Luton Town Centre’. C&R is opposing plans by Luton Town Football Club for a retail, leisure and office development at Newlands Park at M1 Junction 10, which would fund a new stadium for the Hatters at Power Court. The Mall’s vision document, submitted to Luton Council last week, contains various designs for beautifying the area near Power Court and the shopping centre, including more trees and greenery and improving the landscaping around St Mary’s Church. But Nigel Green, chairman of #saveourtown, the group fighting for the regeneration of Luton, said yesterday that C&R’s vision is “nothing to get excited or concerned about”. “It’s a glossy brochure full of proposed, uncosted ideas, pretty pictures and frequent use of the word ‘community’ despite scant evidence of any engagement with people on the matter,” said Mr Green. “It’s not worth the paper it’s written on. They have hastily cobbled this together only because Luton Town Football Club, which has been at the

heart of our town for more than a century and will continue to be so long after C&R have left, has developed truly transformational plans for our home and they cannot stand not being the only show in town, despite the obvious benefits.” Mr Green invited C&R to consult face-to-face with the people of Luton on their vision as extensively and openly as the 133-year-old football club did with theirs in 2016. “Maybe then C&R will understand just how disliked and discredited they are among Lutonians,” added Mr Green. “They could, however, alter that perception by understanding that every-

Get behind these proposals, C&R, and let’s make Luton an even greater place to live.” Luton Town’s 2020 Developments submitted its plans for Power Court and Newlands Park to the council more than two years ago, but no date has yet been set for the planning committee to make its decision, despite calls from #’saveourtown to do so. 2020 Developments says its two applications together “deliver a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the image of our town and deliver much-needed economic investment to the tune of £250million a year to the local economy and over 10,000 jobs”. More backing for #saveourtown from business BUSINeSS leaders in the Bury Park area of Luton have added their voices to the growing support for the #saveourtown campaign. Members of the group backing the Power Court and Newlands Park plans have been visiting Bury Park to engage with the community on the regeneration proposals. And the Bury Park Business Forum this week wrote to #saveourtown chairman Nigel Green to say it is “100 per cent behind your campaign and fully supports the twin planning applications”. Riaz Zaman, who chairs the forum, wrote: “we have met and worked with your community ambassadors on several occasions while they have been carrying out engagement activity in the Bury Park area. “The work of the Save Our Town campaign in building bridges across communities has impressed us. “Like you, we believe in the exciting opportunity to regenerate Luton that is offered by these applications. “we sincerely hope that a supportive planning decision is made soon to enable all communities to start to build a brighter future for our town.” #saveourtown said in response: “Twice in the last four months we’ve been to Bury Park and received a fabulous reception on both occasions,

while working in partnership with volunteers from the community and engaging with residents, businesses and shoppers. “we have seen first hand that there’s a lot of positivity about the campaign and the need for regeneration in Luton. “The Bury Park community stands to benefit significantly from the Power Court and Newlands Park developments because Luton Town Football Club moving to the former will free up the land at Kenilworth Road for much-needed community use.” #saveourtown members also spent two hours chatting with local people and handing out leaflets about the campaign outside the St George’s Square entrance to The Mall shopping centre last week. A #saveourtown spokesman said: “It was an overwhelming success, full of constructive and positive conversation with the residents, shoppers and workers of Luton. we’d like to thank everyone we spoke to and also to say that we plan to return to continue the big conversation.” Further support for the campaign has come from former Luton Town FC manager David Pleat, who appears in a short video on the #saveourtown social media platforms. Long-time Luton resident Pleat,

who is now a football commentator and pundit, had two spells in charge of the Hatters and also managed Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City and Sheffield wednesday. He became a Hatters legend after millions of TV viewers saw him skip and dance across the Maine Road pitch in 1983 after a late goal by Raddy Antic kept Luton in the old First Division and sent Manchester City down. The Match Of The Day clip, with John Motson providing the commentary, has been replayed many times. The Save Our Town campaign has launched a new initiative to help raise funds to improve the effectiveness and scope of the work carried out by its team of volunteers. A spokesman said: “The campaign is supporting the exciting new plans to regenerate Luton and to offer a host of exciting new facilities in and around the centre of the town. Much promotion is carried out

through free social media. “However, work including website build and maintenance, printing, sourcing promotional/administration materials and advertising costs money. “The 200 Club is a simple lottery, drawn monthly, that enables supporters to make a small regular subscription to the campaign, through the lottery, and at the same time have the chance of winning a cash prize each month. “Full details are on the campaign website https://www.saveourtown luton.co.uk/join-the-200-club “Have a bit of fun and support Save Our Town at the same time. “Supporters should know that any residual campaign funds remaining when the battle is won and the campaign disbanded will be distributed to local charities by the committee. every penny donated to the campaign will be fully accounted for.”

Giant poppies to be put on Sandy’s lampposts AS PART of Sandy Town Council’s commemoration of 100 years since the end of ww1, in the run up to Remembrance Day giant poppies are to be put on lampposts along the route of Sandy’s Remembrance Parade, starting at the war Memorial. Mayor Councillor Michael Scott and Councillor Susan Sutton, President of the Sandy Branch of the Royal British Legion, were joined by Tracey Crossland of Mama’s Coffee Shop, who has sponsored one of the lamppost poppies, to launch the initiative. Tracey commented that she is “proud to sponsor a lamppost poppy to remember those who gave their lives to keep this country free. I would encourage my fellow traders to show their support and also sponsor a lamppost poppy.” The lamppost poppies will help ‘bring life’ to the route of the annual Remembrance Day procession and provide an opportunity for the town to remember and thank all those involved in the war effort. Members of the public, local organisations and businesses are invited to sponsor poppies to help the town commemorate 100 years since the end of ww1. Sponsors will be

invited to leave a message of remembrance which will be recorded on the Town Council’s website. The Council have already received a great response from the community, with many people coming forward with sponsorship and personal messages. If you would like to sponsor a poppy, please visit the Town Council’s website (www.sandytowncouncil.gov.uk) or its offices at 10 Cambridge Road, Sandy to find out more. As part of its commemoration activities the Town Council will also be taking part in a Nation’s Tribute on 11th November 2018, which will see a beacon lit in a national act of remembrance. In addition, the Council has hosted a series of historical talks on ww1 at the Council offices at Cambridge Road. The final two talks in the programme are to be held in October and November at 7:30 pm in the Council Chamber; 3rd October – Talk on Lieutenant Walter Graves of Sandye Place. 6th November – “We will remember them”- The Sandy War Memorial

Is the High Street dead? Not at No 14 Sandy High Street

THE national headlines are sadly full of stories about the failure of so many high street chains, with Homebase the latest one under threat as we write. But there is a remarkable retail story of longterm success close to home on Sandy High Street.

Look behind the current modern shop frontage of ladies fashion shop All Seasons Boutique and there is at least 135 years of ‘fashion’ retail history. Current owner Babs Morse is about to celebrate five years ownership of the ladies fashion shop All Season Boutique and has been researching the history of the shop as part of her plans for a special “birthday” celebration at the shop on 29 September 2018.

Could the good people of Sandy be stopped from drinking alcohol? The shop was originally a failed ‘temperance tavern’, opened in July 1880, when there was a drive to get the population to stop drinking alcohol. That attempt obviously wasn’t successful. The shop then reopened as a draper and outfitter a couple of years later having

moved from nearby Cambridge Road. The owners, George and Grace Gregg came originally from Belfast and Scotland and sold linen, woollen drapery, Scotch tweeds and family mourning wear. Longevity is the name of the game for the business in recent years, illustrated by another special anniversary – seamstress Valerie Bickerdike has been with the business for an amazing 40 years and has worked for several different owners. The shop has been passed down through numerous owners, and it’s been a ladies fashion boutique now for over 60 years. (It doesn’t sell mourning wear any more). As used to happen in retail, the last few changes of owner are where the shop has been handed on to a long-term team member. That’s how the current owner arrived. Babs started in the shop working one day a week in 2010, spending the rest of her time as a qualified image consultant. Over the years she ended up working fulltime there and when the last owner, Sue Pelletier retired in 2013 she took the shop over. But retail is tough and Babs has to work hard to make the business thrive. The national online retail share of the clothing market has just hit 20% and it’s

still growing, and with the burden of rent and business rates, shops have to be smart and very customer focused to survive. Babs has ensured the shop can grow by very carefully stocking a wide range of popular, higher end but affordable ladies fashion collections and has a very loyal customer base that continues to grow.

CELEBRATING THE NEXT ANNIVERSARY

The special fifth anniversary birthday celebrations at the shop on Saturday 29 September are a great example of how All Seasons Boutique continues to thrive. Some super special offers, surprisingly high value prizes in a raffle, plus lots of fun, drinks and nibbles are all there to attract new and existing customers. Every buying customer on the day gets a very classy, attractive ladies tote bag. Shops on the local high street can’t afford expensive marketing so Babs has begged, borrowed and cajoled her suppliers to support All Seasons Boutique as they celebrate. They would love to see some new customers and make a fuss of them so there can be a high street in Sandy in another 135 years. Maybe not with a temperance tavern, perhaps with just as many pubs.

out & about The Doors Alive Bedford Esquires Saturday 8th September 2018 “To call The Doors Alive merely a tribute act would be a huge disservice to what is the closest thing possible to experiencing a Doors concert without the aid of a flux capacitor and 1.21 gigawatts. They are high priests who allow us to worship at the altar of The

Doors by continuing the word and gospels of Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robbie Krieger and John Densmore.” – Pure Magazine, Ireland. The band re-create the sound, look, presence and magic of a real 1960’s Doors concert,

perfectly and effortlessly transporting the audience back in time with classic hits such as ‘Light My Fire’, ‘when The Music’s Over, Riders On The Storm, The end and many more. The Doors Alive have over 1,000 shows under their belt to date.

This show celebrates the 50th anniversary of 1967 album “The Doors” so enjoy the band widely regarded as the closest and most enthralling representation of the 60s rock gods revisit this classic album.

Tickets are on sale now priced £12 in advance in person booking fee free from esquires Bar, Slide Record Store in the Arcade and Mario’s Hair Design in Kempston and can be picked up online from Seetickets.

Ginger Wildheart Bedford Esquires Wednesday 26th September

Ginger wildheart is an english rock guitartist, singer and songwriter. He was guitarist in The Quireboys from 1987-89 and a year later formed rock band The wildhearts. Alongside this he has had a solo career, and is now heading out on the road to support his recent album ‘Ghost in the Tanglewood’ released by Graphite Records in March 2018. “while leaning towards country music, my fairly unavoidable accent means that the songs come off less willie Nelson and more Bobby Thompson, but every lyric is purely heartfelt and every song is as true a

story as you’ll ever hear. This stuff has always been in my blood since I was a wee nipper and it’s an honour to finally get it out for people to hear” says Ginger. This album began life as a Pledge Campaign with all profits donated to The Samaritans to raise an awareness and support suicide prevention and mental health issues – a theme running through the album and close to Ginger’s heart. Tickets are £15 advance, on sale right now from Seetickets.com, or in person without a booking fee from Slide Record Shop, esquires and Mario’s Hair Design, Kempston.
