HOME Instead East Northants is aiming to touch the lives of older people in our community who may be lonely or might not receive a present this Christmas. The ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ scheme started in America by Home Instead Senior Care in 2006. This started with only a few gifts being distributed to a local nursing home. Now 11 years later it has grown and provides more than a million gifts to thousands of people across America. Consequently, it has now been brought over to the UK offices of Home Instead where we want to bring a smile to older lonely adults who may be on their own this Christmas. Home Instead East Northants cares for people in their own home providing one hour to 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Do you struggle with your morning routine? Do you wonder how to get to your next appointment, doctors, hairdressers? Home Instead is there to help. Enjoy your weekly shopping trip with a CAREGiver who will take the stress out of the trip, driving you to the shops in comfort, pushing the trolley and carrying the shopping. Our services include companionship, personal care, home help and young disabled adults and also specialist care for those with dementia and Alzheimer’s. We care a lot about our community and want to give back to those this Christmas who may not have someone. We may provide the only gift and visit that the recipient may have this Christmas. So we are asking…. ...would you like to help make someone’s day this Christmas why not join our ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ appeal all you have to do, is take one of our leaflets which has a tag to tear off and write what you are giving and who it is from and then the fun part, choose a gift that you would like to give to an elderly person who maybe lonely this Christmas. The leaflet will have a list of drop off points, or pop into our office in Wellingborough. If you would like to know more get in touch with Lucy Darnell 01933 678775 and see BeASantaToASeniorEastNorthan ts on Facebook.

Dig pit at Stanwick Lakes has new artefacts THE archaeological dig pit at Stanwick Lakes has new artefacts thanks to a donation of £500 from the Francis and Maisie Pryor Charitable Trust. The dig pit is an important part of the educational activities at Stanwick Lakes as it gives people the chance to get ‘hands-on’ with history. Visitors, including school children, use the dig pit to learn the basic skills of archaeology and unearth artefacts, just like the archaeologists who
excavated the Nene Valley in the 1980s. The funding has allowed the rockingham Forest Trust, which manages Stanwick Lakes, to buy items such as Iron Age silver bracelets, Saxon glass beads and medieval cast iron keys. There is also a great selection of pottery, including a Bronze Age Beaker, roman mortarium and a Nene Valley Hunting cup, made by Graham Taylor of Potted History, Stonehenge visitor centre.

Church boosted by funds TEL: 07745 818071 or 07724 905406 A CHURCH in Raunds has secured more than £200,000 to undertake repair work, with funding advice and support from East Northamptonshire Council and major support made possible by National Lottery players. Raunds St Peter’s Church has been awarded a major grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, (HLF), of £181,800, £20,000 from the National Churches Trust, £7,000 from the Wolfson Foundation and £10,000 from Northamptonshire Historic Churches Trust. The money will be used to stabilise and preserve the building, saving the treasures housed within it, and provide a foundation for future work, opening up the church to much wider use within the community. The church is already a popular community venue, used by local residents and visitors alike, and enjoyed by people of different ages including local schools and uniformed and toddler groups. Without these funds the church’s valuable and unique heritage is at risk as the building is suffering from severe subsidence. The work to be done include underpinning, drainage and gutter repairs, repairing masonry features, and restoring and replacing the stained glass and plain windows. The council’s external funding manager, Su Davies, helped with the grant submissions and is very pleased with the result: She said: “This is one of the biggest community projects I’ve been involved in during my time at ENC. “I was delighted to hear that, with a little bit of extra help, all of the Church’s bids for funding were successful. “It’s wonderful that we’ve
been able to preserve such an important part of our heritage for future generations to enjoy.” The Church group worked extremely hard fundraising, reaching an impressive £120,000 themselves, bringing the total raised to nearly £340,000. The total cost of the project is approximately £415,000. Maureen Windust, churchwarden and Project Leader, was thrilled. She said: “All of us at St Peter’s Church are delighted that we are now able to commence these vital repairs to the church building. “This project has taken many years to come to fruition, but will lead the way to ensuring that the building is preserved for future generations and will be fit for the use of a much wider community. “Without the major award from the Heritage Lottery Fund, these repairs would not have been possible. “I would strongly recommend anyone who is embarking on a fundraising project to contact Su Davies at the council. “Her help, skills and knowledge have been invaluable to our project.’’ If you belong to a community group and would like some advice about funding opportunities, please contact Su on 01832 742191 or at sdavies@eastnorthamptonshire.gov.uk The HLF invests money to help people across the UK explore, enjoy and protect the heritage they care about – from archaeology to historic parks and buildings, from precious memories and collections to rare wildlife, thanks to National Lottery players. EAST Northamptonshire Council has welcomed the decision that the potential judicial review of the decision to grant planning permission for the expansion of the Howdens facility at Warth Park, Raunds, has not been given permission to proceed. Applying for a judicial review of the council’s decision, the claimant argued that the members of the planning committee had been misled as to the weight which could be applied to an emerging Neighbourhood Plan Policy but the application was refused.
Refusing the application at an oral renewal hearing, the High Court judge stated she did not accept the claimant’s submission that members were misled and that the Claimant’s case was unarguable. Leader of the council Steven North, welcomed the decision and noted that it: “Vindicates the conduct and approach of the members of the council’s planning management committee and officers, in reaching the decision on the Warth Park planning application.” The council will continue to seek to recover any costs.

DIAMONDS
Focus on Diamonds’ big return home IT was an emotional day for so many when AFC Rushden & Diamonds stepped out onto the Hayden Road pitch as a home team playing in Rushden for the first time back in August. The new club created, run and owned by its fans had been forced to play the first five years of its life away from its spiritual Rushden home in Wellingborough. When a new ground became needed and our friends at Rushden & Higham United were keen an amazing amount of work was done by some incredible volunteers to make the Hayden Road ground ready for the level of football Diamonds now play at. The ground always had a homely feel about it overlooked as it is by the Rushden Cricket Club but the addition of a new seated stand (The Mick George Stand) and the transfer of some amenities already owned by Diamonds such as a standing enclosure behind the goal (The Peter de Banke Terrace), a modern turnstile block, the Dale’s Bar unit, plus some solid pitch perimeter fencing, relaying of concrete terraces and general tidying up have helped the ground really look the part. Plus the recently extra cover for
the standing area behind the town end goal. The characters have certainly come along with the club with the famous Burger Monster expanding his fabulous match-day menu, the girls running Dale’s Bar serving local ale from the Hart Brewery, and the media team including the colourful American Bruce Greenberg keeping up match-day commentary on Radio Diamonds and post-match interviews on AFCRDTV. Throw in the welcoming Rushden & Higham United social club and excellent hospitality area and you have a great place to enjoy a day at the football. The team have had some special days already at Hayden Road. A pre-season victory against Northampton Town saw more than 800 in the ground. The opening day win in glorious sunshine against Hanwell Town was a massive day, it was followed by a 7-1 thumping of Fleet Town and an exciting FA Cup Replay played under lights in front of an excited 600 plus crowd. The team are looking on track for yet another winning season and a potential top six play-off position. They have never finished
lower than fifth in any season and have been promoted, champions or reached end of season play-offs in all but one of their five seasons, and they finished third that year!! A defeat and a couple of goalless draws dented the home form a little in September, but some good wins at Dunstable and Marlow have kept Diamonds well in the promotion hunt up to the end of October. They are a team capable of scoring goals with exciting wingers such as Luke Fairlamb, Joel Gyasi and Claudiu Hoban and penetrating forward players such as top scorer Nabil Shariff and alltime leading scorer Tom Lorraine. They have a solid defence marshalled by inspirational captain Liam Dolman and have Sam Brown alongside him who played in AFC Rushden’s very first match back in 2012 and now has more than 200 games for the club.
BRAND OF FOOTBALL
Manager Andy Peaks likes his sides to attack, to use the ball intelligently in midfield and out wide and to defend aggressively. It’s a good brand of football loved by the members/fans who own the club of course and all played in an
excellent friendly community football club. Diamonds have more than 25 teams playing under their name from youth football, to women and girls’ teams, and even walking football so you can see it is a club based very much in its community. U-16 members gain free entry to every league game to encourage the next generation of Diamonds fans and players. The club website is a good source of information about what’s going on at the club including fixtures, match reports and highlights, plus social events and details of how you can join as a member/owner of the club. You can even join up as a member on the day and view many club shop products. The club are very proud to be back in Rushden at Hayden Road and would love to welcome more folk from the Rushden area to enjoy a social afternoon at the football and to join our community club. For more visit www.afcdiamonds.com. follow @afcrd and Paul Judd on Radio Diamonds. Team photograph by kind permission of Malcolm Swinden photography.
Battling netball girls reach finals after thrilling wins
OUNDLE netball team has won the county rounds and are through to the regionals to take place in Nottingham in January. Captain, Lily Craven, 17, said: “After weekly sessions we went into the tournament feeling confident in our abilities to perform. “The team was pleased with its performance and for such an early game we played incredibly well and it is an excellent start to the coming season. “I would like to congratulate everyone for their performances as a new team retaining our title and I look forward to the regionals next term.” Head of netball Bev Burnham said: “Although we had a slow start the girls united as a team and produced some exciting passages of play, creating many turn overs and converting these to goals. There was a great team spirit.”
