Wishing you all a Happy Christmas

TRIBUTE PAID TO TOWN STALWART TRIBUTE has been paid to a real Rushden stalwart. Harry Graham, MBE, has passed away at the grand age of 92.

He had such an interesting and remarkable life, where he initially served in London as an under 18-years-of-age Home Guard Commando with the Guards during World War 2. His role was as a watcher and he once spoke of being on the roof of Selfridges when the UK was under threat of invasion. He joined the Royal Navy in 1944 and was trained as a radar plotter eventually ending up on HMS Vega, a destroyer with Crown Prince Olav on board when it invaded Norway in 1945. A statement from the Rushden branch of the

Royal British Legion said: “This great WW2 veteran left the Royal Navy in 1947 and married Megan in 1952. “Harry was passionate about serving in his community and improving the lot of people’s lives and as a result, he has served both district and county as a councillor and particularly worked hard to improve road links throughout Northamptonshire. “He was secretary to the UK Older Peoples’ Advisory Group and founded the National Bus Pass for older people, which, among other great achievements won him his MBE in 2004. “Harry held various roles within the RBL Rushden Branch and was the incumbent vicepresident. “His wise counsel and knowledge were always

sought, and he was readily available to offer and advise, as he had done on many occasions. “He was an absolute charmer with people, had a great and mischievous sense of humour and was just so popular with an immense amount of respect. “We will dearly miss him as will his wife Megan of 66 years and their son Ian and daughter Yvonne, and the wider family. “Harry was a great family man who will always be remembered.” His funeral took place on November 20. Donations in Harry’s memory can be made towards the Rushden Branch Royal British Legion and St. Peter’s Church Rushden. They may be forwarded to Funeral Directors A. Abbott & Sons, Bedford Road, Rushden.

Fund boost for play facilities in district RESIDENTS in Irthlingborough and Barnwell can now enjoy more opportunities to take part in physical activity and recreational play following the opening of new public facilities, after receiving support from East Northamptonshire Council’s Community Facilities Fund project. Families will be able to enjoy hours of fun at the brand new children’s playground in Barnwell, within the garden of the Montagu Arms. The play area was officially opened by the council chairman Wendy Brackenbury and leader Steven North with representatives from Barnwell Parish Council. Barnwell Parish Council successfully secured funding from the Community Facilities Fund to deliver the brand new play area for local residents and visitors to enjoy.

A new outdoor gym has also opened at Irthlingborough Central Recreation Ground, following Irthlingborough Town Council receiving funding from the Community Facilities Fund. Designed with inclusivity at the heart, the new equipment is accessible for all ages and abilities and provides residents with the opportunity to get active, no matter the weather. East Northamptonshire Council’s partners, Freedom Leisure, will be delivering free gym buddy sessions every Monday between 10am and 11am. Councillor North said: “The Community Facilities Fund provides local communities with the opportunity to benefit from improved public facilities and I was honoured to join Wendy,

fellow councillors and other community leaders to open and see these projects first-hand. “I hope that residents of Barnwell and Irthlingborough will enjoy their new facilities for years to come.” The Community Facilities Fund provides constituted community groups and organisations, town and parish councils in East Northamptonshire with funding up to £50,000. There must be a minimum of 25 per cent match funding to be eligible to apply. Applications are now closed. People can visit ENC’s website and social media pages to keep up to date on future application rounds. For more information visit www.east-northamptonshire.gov.uk/cff.

Have your say on how you think the council is doing in new survey

HOUSEHOLDERS can now give their views on how they think the council is performing via the annual council survey. It is an opportunity for residents to give their feedback on public services in East Northampton-

shire and where improvements could be made. Council leader Steven North said:“With further reductions in external funding predicted for the next few years, views from across the district will help to shape services and how

money is spent so we urge residents to take part in the survey so all views can be considered.” The survey is available until Sunday, December 16, at www.east-northamptonshire. gov.uk/residentssurvey.

Prison given the go-ahead H

BOROUGH councillors have unanimously approved a reserved matters application for the redevelopment of the former Wellingborough Prison. Wellingborough Council members approved reserved matters of detail relating to the building, appearance, landscaping and layout of the outline planning application for the replacement prison at Wellingborough, which is anticipated to open in 2021. Demolition of the old prison has started on site to make way for the new buildings. Outline planning permission was approved in April last year for the demolition of the existing buildings and the construction of a new prison on the same site within a secure perimeter fence. Once built, the new prison will have the capacity to hold 1,680 category ‘C’ prisoners.

Council leader Martin Griffiths, said: “This is an exciting time for Wellingborough, with a number of developments coming together to shape the future of our borough. “The development of the replacement prison will benefit the local economy by creating job opportunities for residents, apprentices and contracts for businesses across the borough - delivering an anticipated £80m boost to Wellingborough's economy.” The Government’s Prison Estate Transformation Programme, (PETP), aims to deliver a reformed and modernised prison estate by building prisons delivering up to 10,000 modern places which will improve rehabilitation and create decent, safe and secure environments for both staff and offenders and by reconfiguring the existing   to simplify the role of estate individual prisons.

Dancing their way to funds

A BRAND new dance event for Serve has been a real triumph. Six couples danced for a packed house at The Ferrers School, Higham Ferrers, last month and their efforts raised more than £6,800 for Wellbeing services through sponsorship and smaller events before the big night. All the competitors had little or no dance experience and in a few short months learned three ballroom dances, including a fantastic and unique showdance. Serve sent a big thankyou to Liz Rogers at Footloose for all her hard work in helping to train them. Thanks also went to The Ferrers School for hosting the event, sponsors Headlands Carpets and RG Donno Services, as well as the fantastic team of volunteers. Jo Gouldson won 'Best Show Dance' for her Argentine tango with Matt in a glamourous red and gold sparkly dress. The award was presented to her by judge John Houghton, friend of the legendary Len Goodman. Pete Sutherland won 'The Spirit of Serve Award' and was presented with it by judge Michelle Gibbs, who is the Serve exercise tutor and dance teacher at a local dance school. Pete had a lot less rehearsal time than the other

dancers. He had absolutely no dance experience and got completely stuck in with gusto. He had been doing late night rehearsals with his partner Jane, often making for a 10-hour day. Pete has also did well to pull sponsorship in, in a limited time. Keith Curryer won ‘Best Overall Dancer’ – the glitterball trophy for the best performance across all three dances, the waltz, samba and show dance. He was presented with his award by judge Shelley Booth Davies from the Mash dance school. He and his partner were

dressed as the 'trolls' for their fun and funky showdance, Keith in blue with a blue wig and Jo in pink with fabulous flowers, a great fun couple to watch. A spokesman for Serve said: “We are very grateful and appreciate all the efforts that went in to this fun evening. “We are overwhelmed by the support we had in fundraising for these essential services in the community. “The money will support older people and people with disabilities to remain independent in their homes while supporting their social interaction and health and well-being.”

Having a say

EAST Northamptonshire Council is asking residents for their views on the draft Local Plan Part Two. The six-week consultation is now live and residents will be able to submit their feedback to the council by Monday, December 17. The district-wide site specific development plan will enable the council to guide the determination of planning applications and will support the strategic policies of the Local Plan Part One. The Local Plan Part Two sets out the vision for the future of East Northamptonshire, building on the proposals as set out in the North Northamptonshire Joint Core Strategy 2011-31. Council leader Steven North said: “The Local Plan Part Two seeks to ensure that our towns are able to provide services that meet local demand while also supporting our rural communities. It aims to help them to develop by improving local connections and local employment opportunities. “We value our residents’ feedback and I would encourage the community to have their say on the future of our district.” To view the consultation documents visit: east-northamptonshire.gov.uk/localplan2

TALENTED musicians from Tresham College performed in front of an audience of thousands at the recent Wicksteed Park fireworks display. The students, who are all studying music, performance and production, competed in a ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition to win a coveted place in the final line-up. The band is called Hello Velveteurs and it performed a selection of pop and rock covers. Tresham music lecturer Dr Cathy Grice said: “For some of our students it was their first gig, so it

was a great opportunity to perform live in front of such a large audience. “They rehearsed really hard and made us proud on the night.” This year the Hello Velveteurs were supported by another band from Bedford College, The Know. Working together under The Bedford College Group umbrella, both colleges provide an extensive range of Level 2, Level 3, HND and HNC courses for young musicians. Lest we forget – brave heroes are honoured

PEOPLE from all ages came together to honour our war heroes during remembrance events. A wonderful service of Remembrance was held in Higham Ferrers, with almost 1,000 people congregated on the Market Square, (see picture, top left from reader Julie Carlton). The town’s Bedesmen and the Bedeswoman were on parade. Students at Huxlow Science College in Irthlingborough commemorated the centenary of the First World War, (pictured bottom left). In Oundle, a commemoration of the centenary of the end of the war was held at Oundle School. It gave a glimpse into the lives of those living through those times,

through memorials, photographs and diaries, (see top, centre). Archivist at Oundle School, Elspeth Langsdale said: “Through the diaries and letters of Oundle staff and pupils, we had a real feeling of how it felt to be part of the war and it brings the Oundle story, during this time, to life.” Thousands also turned out to pay their respects at other services across East Northamptonshire, including at the annual parade and events in Rushden. Bottom left and pictured on the right are a selection of photographs taken by The Reporter and our readers Michael Oughton, Julie Carlton, Emma Gibbs and staff from Jan’s Florist shop in High Street, Rushden.

Forterra’s Kelly Friel and Clare A NEW cross has been unveiled at Oundle School. The cross was officially revealed at the recent Service of Remembrance to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armistice. Oundle School chaplain, The Rev Brian Cunningham, dedicated the specially commissioned cross for the chapel. The cross was commissioned by Harry Williamson, (StA 55), as a gift to the chapel. It was designed by Anthony Elson, a liveryman of

the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, and a wellknown silversmith and designer. Made of brass to match the existing candlesticks, the design quietly reflects the architecture of the 1920s chapel. It also illustrates the styling of John Piper’s stained glass from the 1950’s era. At the centre is a poppy of enamelled silver. This acknowledges the dedication as a memorial to the Oundle pupils who fell in the First World War.

Home Instead east Northants is a local homecare company that provides care to people over the age of 18 in their own home from a minimum of 1 hour to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The services include companionship, home help, personal care and specialist care such as dementia, Parkinson’s disease and autism. marketing manager marie is proud with how the community events have grown this last year with the Companionship/Friendship Cafes at m&S, Rushden Lakes, Castello Lounge and Sainsbury’s in Wellingborough all attracting interest. once again, this Christmas we have been appealing for gifts for the “Be a Santa to a Senior” Campaign. The aim is to touch the lives of older people in the community who may be lonely or have no family especially at a time like Christmas. The thought of someone having nothing to open on Christmas Day is saddening. But we put a smile on their faces and give them a present donated by you. We are delighted to work with the British Legion and Salvation Army who will be distributing the presents to the elderly. We have pop up stands in garden centres and other venues around the county. Please watch out for Lucy and marie. ––––––––––––––

DECEMBER 2018 EAST NORTHANTS REPORTER — 9

Take on cycle challenge Spooky fun as youngsters enjoy Halloween fun and frolics ARE you a keen cyclist? Looking for a challenge? If you have answers are ‘yes’, then Cynthia Spencer has the challenge for you in 2019. The London to Paris cycle is an awesome cycling challenge. You will spend four days in the saddle, cycling 308 miles from capital to capital. Your journey begins in London with a route through glorious English countryside, cycling through Kent to Dover, before crossing the Channel to Calais. Once across the water, you will cycle ‘French style,’ remembering to keep to the right. Cycling along quiet country lanes, through traditional market towns with views of the rolling green hills of Northern France, passing the war memorials and cemeteries of the Somme. A spectacular finish awaits you on the home stretch up the Champs Elysées to the Arc de Triomphe, before reaching the piece de resistance, the Eiffel Tower, which marks the finish. The days in the saddle may be long but the sense of achievement you will feel crossing the finish line, will be worth it. Dr Reema Pal, (pictured, right), completed the challenge in July.

She said: “As well as raising money for all our patients, my ride was in memory of my good friend Fiona who was ward sister here at the hospice for about 20 years. “The saddle soreness will soon wear off as you realise you’ve achieved something amazing, and supported Cynthia Spencer Hospice along the way.” You can coincide this epic adventure with the world’s greatest cycle races. London to Paris Tour de France Edition takes place from July 24 to July 28 next year. The registration fee is £125 and minimum sponsorship is £1,600. If you are interested contact Sarah 01604 973346.

Manor School’s Open Evening mANoR School Sports College extends a warm invitation to Year 11 students from across east Northamptonshire to its Sixth Form open evening on Tuesday 8 January. This summer saw the school celebrate some of the strongest A Level and BTeC results in its history, with impressive changes in some of the traditionally more challenging subjects such as the sciences. This has resulted in the majority of this year’s leavers securing their first-choice place at some of the most prestigious universities in the country, including Cambridge and the University of Nottingham. manor School offers an extensive curriculum with a wide range of courses to suit the learning needs of students of all abilities. Smaller class sizes enable teachers to get to know each student as an individual, working with them to enhance their strengths and improve their weaknesses. Subject lessons may take place in the auditorium, professional

kitchen or 3G pitch, with students also having access to several computer suites, the on-site fitness centre and Learning Resource Centre. Its subject provision is underpinned by extensive information, advice and guidance coupled with a wide range of enrichment and community opportunities for all students. When students reach the end of their studies they leave the school as passionate, confident and resilient adults, fully prepared to face the next stage of their academic or professional journey. The Sixth Form open evening will enable prospective students to find out more about the courses on offer, speak with subject teachers and current students, and discover how manor School Sports College can provide the educational and personal development opportunities they need for a successful future. For more information please visit the school’s website or contact the school on 01933 623921.

MORE than 100 toddlers and school children gathered at Saxon Hall in Raunds for a spook-tacular Halloween party which included games, dancing and a fancy dress competition. The event, organised by Raunds Town Council, has been running for three years now and the children have a great time dressing up - some of the parents joined in too. There was a Halloween ‘best dressed’ competition and Mayor Richard Level presented the prizes to Jude Beevor and Ettie York for their fabulous costumes. Chairman of events for the council Helen Howell, said: “We are delighted the event continues to be a success, our events committee and staff work very hard to put on events like this and others for the town. “It is really important to bring the community together.” Parent Amie Cox said: “A massive thank you to Raunds Town Council. “The party was fantastic.”

IN MY OPINION

New restaurant is on menu

More family homes need to be built By Andy Mercer

IT started in Italy and Spain. Slowly and quietly, like a secret epidemic, it spread across the West, until it came to the notice of powerful people. meanwhile, government statisticians spotted some curious trends. Firstly in the Latin countries, but later appearing in Northern europe and the US. The birth rate was falling. Demographers have long claimed the birth rate would eventually stabilise, as countries became more affluent. Few predicted that it would FALL. In each country, there is anecdotal evidence about the cause, (for example, in Italy, stories emerged of young men living with their parents into their 30s, which doesn’t leave much time to produce traditional large Italian families). For a while, high levels of immigration masked the impact, because new people were arriving. In Germany, Chancellor merkel reacted by

EDITORIAL: nick@rosettapublishing.com

bringing in more than a million migrants from the middle east and beyond. (That in turn caused a different problem which has forced her to announce her retirement.) In the UK, we seemed to buck the trend for a while, but the latest figures put us in the same range as the continental countries. our birth rate has dropped to 1.7 children per couple. This is NoT sustainable. You cannot have more grandparents than grandchildren. To deal with the issue, some countries have taken drastic action, such as paying couples to have children.

Subsidies for every child help parents afford larger families, but in england, that doesn’t seem to be the answer. A consensus is emerging that our housing market is the problem. For decades, fewer homes have been built

SUBSIDIES

than are needed. We are now several million short. Shortage of housing has forced house prices up to unreasonable levels. Historically, homes have cost around three times average earnings. If they reach six times, it has generally led to social unrest. Today, we have house prices about eight times average earnings. The answer for us, therefore, is to build more houses, vast numbers of them – and quickly. The Government has, belatedly, realised this, but some departments are still in the learning phase. The rules for new housing are pushing councils to accept the vast numbers, but the rules aren’t yet fit for purpose. We need new homes for new families, but the rules don’t seem to realise this. As a result, one new development in Rushden will consist entirely of one-bed flats. How is that going to help young couples start families?

AN exciting recent addition to Oundle’s neighbourhood dining scene – ‘pop-up’ restaurant Ora Cultro – has now launched a regular Saturday fine dining evening in the town. The concept was launched in March by Oundle chef Chris Huggett, (left), in a bid to bring an exciting new fine dining experience to the town. Initially a pop up restaurant providing sixcourse taster menus at different venues once a month, Ora Cultro is now open every Saturday evening with an exciting new menu – and a new home, at Fletton House, off Glapthorn Road. Chris said: “The initial concept behind Ora Cultro was to provide a different dining experience for people in Oundle and the surrounding area.” For more visit www.oracultro.restaurant.

You’ve heard of us –but did you know? WE HAVE: a café (breakfast, lunch, afternoon

tea), pet shop, dog grooming parlour, art shop, gift shop, greetings card shop, grocery shop, garden tools and supplies, outdoor clothing, sectional buildings, fencing panels, gravels, turf, composts and of course a huge range of plants.

gardening Plants are good for you – so what better Christmas gift by Maureen Catlin Milton Ernest Garden Centre

T LAST people are realising something Gardeners have always known that plants really are good for you. Visually they are very appealing with lovely bright colours and wonderful shapes. many are fragrant and make the home happy by elevating people’s moods. Now they are thought to contribute to good health and wellbeing. So Plants make superb Christmas Gifts for all our friends and family. But remember plants are not just for Christmas so to make sure they give the months of pleasure they should here are some tips to care for them. Poinsettias probably most define Christmas with their red bracts, bright green leaves and golden flowers. Yes the golden bobbles in the middle of the bracts are the flowers. They are tropical plants so are happy between 15c to 20c in a bright draft free place, so avoid a windowsill. only water when the surface of the compost is dry. Poinsettias are now available in an array of colours white, pale and deep pink, mahogany and many bi colours. Christmas Cacti with the red or shocking pink flowers, scarlet Gerberas and African Violets like the same care. Christmas Cacti will drop the flower buds if over watered but require some humidity in the air so stand on a tray of pebbles and keep

these moist. Gerberas require slightly brighter light so put on a sunny windowsill in the day but bring into the room before drawing the curtains at night. African Violets are always delightful in jewel box colours. Again stand on sand or gravel and keep moist and away from direct sunlight. Winter flowering plants that are more suited to cooler houses are Azaleas, Cyclamen, Solanums and Kalanchoe. Azaleas need to be kept moist so again stand on a tray of pebbles and water from below. occasionally plunge the pot into a bowl of water so that the level is above the rim. Allow to soak for 30 minutes, remove and drain before replacing onto the tray of pebbles. Cyclamen should always be watered from below and the spent flowers and

stems removed at the base to avoid corm rot. Again plunge the pot occasionally. It is one of the best houseplants for cool places. Solanums, the Winter Cherry is a very easy plant for temperatures between 10c to 15c. only water when the soil feels dry on top. It is also good in autumn tubs on the patio but will not withstand hard frosts. easiest of all is Kalanchoe, Flaming Katy. It likes a cool but sunny position and tolerates fairly dry conditions with the occasional plunge. An Amaryllis bulb makes an interesting present. Amaryllis is easy to grow and should be planted with one third of the bulb above the soil level. Place in a bright light and water sparingly at first increasing as the foliage develops and await that gorgeous flower. Hyacinths with

their heavenly fragrance also like cooler places and will perfume the whole house for weeks. It is fun to grow Citrus Fruits especially if there is a heated conservatory. The hardier varieties like Lemon Trees and Kaffir Limes will tolerate lower temperatures down to 0c and can be grown outdoors. It is advisable to wrap the pot with hessian in late october and move against a protected wall or inside if severe weather is forecast. Calamondin, orange, Kumquats, mandarins and Grapefruits need warmer conditions above 5c. All Citrus Plants need plenty of sunshine and careful watering too much and too little water can result in leaf drop. We recommend plunging the plant in water so the level is above the pot and leave for one hour. Remove and allow to drain and do not water again until the soil is completely dry. For that very special present there are Phalaenopsis, The moth orchid. They are easy to grow tolerating the drier heat of central heating as well as being almost perpetually flowering. Water sparingly from the top but allow to drain well avoid over watering. ––––––––––––– MIlTON ErNEST GarDEN CENTrE WOUlD lIKE TO WISH all OUr rEaDErS a VErY HaPPY CHrISTMaS aND a PrOSPErOUS NEW YEar

Javier from GNG was not letting them get away, with some awesome hits from the wings front and backcourt. Raiders defence was found to be in the wrong place or just not quick enough to pick them up. Neverthe-

less they took the opening set 25-18. GNG then brought on Ion to set and he was more successful in putting up the ball for Javier. Kierran Bates making his Raiders debut was getting his hands on the ball but unable to complete the block – set two went 25-16 to GNG. In set three, Raiders changed Jay for Kierran and Rick for Loz in an attempt to find a way back into the game. It did not work straight off as confusion set in. Tighter rallies eventually came through though Javier was still

doing his utmost to take the game away. But as Sandis and Pav finally started to get hands on the ball a couple of well directed dump shots from Darren O'Neal sealed the set 25-23. GNG were now 2-1 up. Set four saw GNG in full swing, Ion teasing the Raiders varying the pace of his serve and at 23-15 it looked like it was time for the showers. Yet a string of blocks from Sandis, Pav and Rick saw them get back to 24-21. Good pressure on the serve from Neil Bates resulted in hitting errors

from GNG and Raiders took the set 26-24. In set five, sideouts with hits and block were traded until Javier stepped up to the serving line. Extra pressure on the Raiders reception resulted in four-point gap for GNG. Raiders were siding out but not on the first attempt and with serve errors creeping in as well GNG went on to take the set 15-8. This was a good tight game and worthy of a clash between last years top two teams. MVP's were Sandis for the Raiders and Javier for GNG. Raiders Ladies v Northampton B IT was the Raiders that got off to a flying start in the first set. Hard serving from Dorka, Evee, Robyn and Katie was too hot to handle for the Northampton ladies and a commanding lead was taken. Northampton steadied the ship but struggled to find a response to Stanley's height on front court, and the first set went 25-11.

With a couple of changes at the start of set two, Evee again got the Raiders off to a good start. That was to be the last of the long serving runs for either team as errors crept in. Hania Mazur was the pick of the Northampton spikers and worked hard back-court. Corrine though was having to chase the ball down and put the ball up as best she could. Questions were asked about her counting at one point. Raiders took the set 25-17. More changes in the third set for the home side appeared not to be working as they went 13-9 behind. But improved movement on backcourt from Becky Stabler opened up the hitting options for Stanley and Kuba and they finished the set off 25-20. The game allowed both sides to experiment with line ups and was played in friendly atmosphere. MVP's were Hania Mazur for Northampton and Evee Bozsoki for the Raiders.

Tough start for the Rebels

rebels v Northampton THe Rebels season started hosting last years division two runners-up and to be fair they got off to a good start. Northampton got off to a slow start, poor digging and errant hitting was punished by the solid serving from Andy Turner saw it go to 14-2 to the Rebels. But when the seasoned heads of Taro Gibbs and Andy Davis came to the serving for Northampton the momentum swung back in their favour and they took the set 25-22. Both teams made changes at the start of set two. Rebels brought on new boy Shaun and moved Rob from the middle to set. The upshot of this was a bigger Rebels block which Northampton found on a number of occasions. Northampton’s cause was not helped by a string of service errors and Rebels took the set 25-18. Set three’s rallies were closer, good hitting from Arturas and Rebels confusion on serve receive saw Northampton ahead 24-18. Rebels took a time out and regrouped. Two poor hits, a bad dig, two blocks and a good hit and wow Rebels took the set 26-24, with good serving by Rob. Rebels looked to maintain the momentum in set four by putting the same line up out. Taro Gibbs again showing the benefit of accurate serving taking nine points on his visits to the service line - 25-19 to the visitors. So into the decider. Northampton won the toss and Joe Gore got them into a six-point lead as the Rebels serve receive disintegrated. The change in ends did not help and Northampton sailed over

the line 15-4 on the back of matt Almonds serve. This was a well contested game and both sides went through patches of form. mVP’s were Taro Gibbs and Kuba Plotek.

Kingsthorpe v rebels HIT by availability issues and injuries the Rebels travelled to Lings. Getting used to where they were on court, confusion reigned. Radu Corbianu and Justina Brezinska capitalised on this with a mixture of hard and soft serves pulling out to a 15-3 lead. Then the Rebels dug in solid serving from Darren Bates, Greg and Kuba they managed to pull it to within a point – 19-18. Kingsthorpe then resorted to the short dump ball and with the Rebels back-court coverage too deep profited by taking the set 25-21. Set two and the rallies were tighter. But the generosity of the Rebels saw them squander the serve on many occasions throwing away the chance to score multiple points. They were however siding out with some good hits from Konrad and Greg. But Ausra’s serving saw the Kings through to the second set. 25-19. So set three was even tighter than the previous two. on this occasion the Rebels managed to take the lead. Kua and Rab making the best of balls put out to the wing. The result of this was Rebels first ball off the net and sets going up mid-court so harder to kill. Kings took the set 25-20 and the match three nil.mVP’s were Radu Corbianu and Katie Bates.
