It all could have ended so differently! A CUSTOMER’S car was rolled into the workshop. An ominous boom and smoke from under a blistering, locked bonnet was the prelude to a catastrophic workshop fire. Oundle-based Qprep have finally recovered from that dreadful day last October. With help of loyal customers and friends, directors Quentin Nicholls and Steve Baker have come out the other side of a fraught six months. With the workshop out of action while insurers decided on the best way
forward – Steve and Quentin pressed their race day mobile workshop into action and started visiting their customers to carry out work. Steve the engineer of the two directors had access to his customers’ machine tools and was able to complete orders for them. Quentin prevailed on
his cycling mates to help with the clear up. Last month the workshop was fully back in action and the task of catching-up with a full order book was underway. Qprep are specialist classic and race car mechanics and engineers. Looking at the huge file of photographs of their previous work – they have worked on everything from a Royal Enfield Meteor crankcase that needed new cam bearings to a fullblown drift car with roll cages and suspension mods – you name it they wave their healing hands over it! Numerous race, rally cars and highly modified fast road cars are just part

A FLY-tpper is paying the price after being found guilty of fly tipping a freezer full of rotting food in East Northamptonshire. During a house clearance in Warmington, near Oundle, in March 2015, Nicholas Smith removed a freezer full of putrid food from the property but instead of disposing of it legally, he chose to dump it on the verge of the road between Warmington and Fotheringhay. Following a tip-off from an eagle-eyed witness, the vehicle was traced by council offices from East Northamptonshire’s waste team through the DVLA and Nicholas Smith was contacted as the registered owner. At an interview under caution, Smith admitted fly-tipping the freezer which he described as “radioactive” and so nauseating that he had to condemn the van that it was carried in.

Residents warned to make homes as secure as possible after spate of burglaries
PEOPLE being reminded to make sure their home is as secure as possible following a number of burglaries in the county in the last week. Officers are providing some crime prevention tips to people in a bid to make the lives of offenders as difficult as possible. Detective Inspector Wayne Preece, from CID, said: “We have seen offenders break into properties across the county in the last week, and so felt it would be worthwhile offering some useful crime prevention tips. “We want offenders to think twice before breaking into a property and doing some simple things like locking doors and windows and tidying valuable items away from view can be enough to prevent your home being targeted. “Being aware of where you live, who your neighbours are and noticing if people are acting suspiciously can also help to prevent incidents from taking place. “If you see a crime taking place call us immediately on 999, or if you see anyone acting suspiciously call us with as much information as possible on 101.”

A STRATEGY which protects a Northamptonshire nature site of European importance while allowing for future housing growth has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award. Drawn up by the North Northamptonshire Joint Planning Unit, (NNJPU), the approach will mitigate the impact of development on the Upper Valley Gravel Pits SPA, (Special Protection Area), which stretches along the River Nene between Northampton and Thrapston. This part of the county is key in delivering housing development in the North Northamptonshire Joint Core Strategy. And while housing will not actually be built on the site of natural significance, the proximity of development could potentially be a threat to wildlife through increased recreational use, such as dog walking. The unique approach of the strategy, which meant the area could be protected whilst allowing

its continued use, helped it to reach the finals in the category for Excellence in Planning for the Natural Environment at the Royal Town Planning Institute’s, (RTPI), Awards for Planning Excellence 2017. The strategy was prepared by a group including East Northamptonshire Council, which has adopted the strategy as policy, the North Northamptonshire Joint Planning Unit, Natural England, Northamptonshire County Council and the Borough Council of Wellingborough. Andrew Longley, head of NNJPU, said: “This really was a team effort and we are very proud our excellent work has been recognised through being shortlisted as finalists for these awards. “The NNJPU regularly delivers complex projects in partnership with private and public stakeholders with the aim of making North Northamptonshire a great place to live, work and invest in.”.

Tresham College merger gets the green light
BEDFORD College and Tresham College of Further and Higher Education have begun the process to officially merge. Students and staff at the colleges will continue as usual, and current courses will not be affected, however, with the combined efforts of both management teams and governing bodies, rapid improvements in quality and financial management will be seen at Tresham to bring significant benefits to the area. Bedford College Principal & Chief Executive for the past two decades, Ian Pryce CBE, said: “It is a pleasure to report that the Board of Tresham College has today unanimously chosen Bedford College as its preferred merger partner. “The merger creates one of the most exciting colleges in the UK, serving Bedfordshire and North Northamptonshire, with an income of nearly £60m and 15,000 students, including 1,900 apprentices and 1,000 students studying at University level. “It will generate exciting new opportunities for the communities, students, apprentices, employers and staff we serve. The combined college will have the size and scale to ensure strong support services and financial security.” “It is our joint intention the colleges should merge on August 1,
subject to due diligence and consultation and recognise this is an ambitious timescale.” “Tresham is currently led by an expert and highly experienced former FE Principal, Ioan Morgan CBE. “I am particularly pleased that Ioan is to stay at Tresham along with other key senior interim staff to ensure the merger is implemented smoothly.”

Council links up with National Grid after gas cuts

EDITORIAL: nick@rosettapublishing.com
EAST Northamptonshire Council officers joined forces with National Grid to provide help and support to Oundle residents who were without gas during the recent cold snap. More than 3,000 properties experienced a loss of gas supply due to a fault on a piece of equipment which regulates the gas pressures to the town. National Grid, the organisation responsible for the gas distribution network in this area, were joined on site by colleagues from Western Power and East Northamptonshire Council to ensure that residents were kept up to date on latest developments as well as provided with heaters and hotplates where necessary. Leader of East Northamp tonshire Council, Steven North said: “This was very much a team effort response with our officers working alongside National Grid and Western Power to ensure that our residents were made as comfortable as possible during this difficult time. “We re-assigned some of the Kier waste collection staff to help
deliver heaters and hotplates to the most vulnerable in the town and council staff provided support at the customer centre located at Fletton House and at the operations centre set up at the rugby club. “And the community stepped up too as managers at Abbott House care home welcomed vulnerable residents affected by the situation and were happy to provide heat and company to those who needed it.” Chairman of East Northamptonshire Council, Rupert Reichhold, from Oundle, said: “I would like to thank all those involved who worked so hard to restore the town’s gas supply and those who worked equally hard in caring for our residents and businesses throughout this difficult period. “This was an unusual situation for the town and it was heartening to see residents, business owners, the town council, East Northamptonshire Council and the energy companies working tirelessly together to resolve the problem and get the people of Oundle warm again.”

AFC Rushden & Diamonds have a new ground
THIS group of footballers proudly show off their certificates after winning a recent football tournmanet. And the win was part of a double for Raunds Park Infants as a team also came first in the Pacesetter Games Gymnastics Event. The team of seven Year One and Two children were tested on
flexibility, balance, co-ordination and strength. They learnt their own floor routines and performed on the vault and balance beam. The pupils won by more than 10 points. This success was followed by the football team winning the Key Stage One Manor Cluster Football tournament.
CLUB members have been voting to decide upon the Club’s new home for the 2017/18 season and beyond. From the three available options, Hayden Road, the home of Rushden & Higham United, was selected by the Membership, receiving over 94 per cent of votes cast. A Diamonds spokesman said: “AFC Rushden & Diamonds would like to place on record our special thanks to the other Clubs involved in the vote, Kempston Rovers and Northampton Sileby Rangers, for the time and effort which they have spent in working with us over the previous weeks and months.” Chairman Ralph Burditt said “I am really pleased that the members have been so united in their decision. “It is a very exciting time for the club and we can’t wait to start working closely with Rushden & Higham United. “To have the opportunity to play within one of the towns which the club represents is fantastic,
although there is obviously a lot of work to do in order to prepare Hayden Road for the new season. “In order to complete the work within a reasonable time frame, we will need to rely once again on volunteer effort from our supporters and I know that they won’t let us down.” In order to comply with ground grading regulations, the club is required to have a ground share agreement at a ground graded D or above in place by March 31 for the 2017/18 season. The spokesman said: “Hayden Road does not currently hold this grade and, therefore, discussions have already commenced with some of the clubs who have expressed an interest in hosting AFC R&D for a short time while we work on Hayden Road and the outcome will be announced in due course.” AFC Rushden & Diamonds will also soon launch a fundraising campaign to assist with covering the cost of the upcoming move to Rushden.
