THE district’s finest young business brains put their skills to the test at the final of the 10th Business Dragons event, hosted by East Northamptonshire Council. The competition, organised by The East Northamptonshire College, saw teams of entrepreneurs from four local schools (Rushden Academy, The Ferrers School, Huxlow Science College and Manor School) pitch their ideas and business plans to a panel of local Business Dragons. The ‘Dragons’ included Peter Waddup (Director of Scotts of Thrapston), Lorna Wiltshire (Personal Stylist and Committee Member of Rushden Town Partnership), Emily Carrington (Solicitor of Borneo Martell Turner Coulston) and Nikki Roberts (Manager of The Pavilion Youth Club). A GROUP of Northamp tonshire students are one step closer to securing sought-after apprenticeships after swapping their summer holidays for a community-focused work experience programme. The five-week Kick-start course, saw eight 16-18 yearolds taking part in work shadowing and training, finally putting their new skills into practice on a community project, where they converted a community centre in Higham Ferrers. Delivered by Spire Homes, a member of Longhurst Group, the programme worked in partnership with three national contractors who the association work with – Aaron Services, Burleys and Keepmoat. The partners and students came together to celebrate at a presentation in front of friends and family last month. Each student is now preparing to apply for one of the four apprenticeships available, with the successful candidates taking up their roles in September. Sharon Boot, Resident and Community Involvement
Officer at Spire Homes, said: “Working in partnership we’ve been able to offer eight young people an opportunity to really get their careers off the ground. I’m incredibly proud of how well all of the students have performed. “Competition for the four apprenticeships will be tough but we’re committed to supporting each of the students who completed the course to find the next step – whether that’s through further work experience or advice on how to make the most of what they’ve learnt over the last five weeks.” Keepmoat Community Liaison Manager Julie Baker, said: “We are thrilled with how hard the eight candidates on this programme have worked. “I am sure they will all have bright futures in the construction industry ahead of them. At Keepmoat, we believe that construction is not just about bricks and mortar, we aim to leave a lasting legacy wherever we work and the Kick-start programme is just one example of how we work with our partners to do this.”

East Northamptonshire Council is sending a letter, known as a Household Enquiry Form (HEF), to every home in the district. The letter will be addressed to the occupier and will contain the details of all those in the household who are registered to vote. Residents are being asked to confirm that these details are correct. If the details are correct, please confirm this online or by text, telephone or post. If the details on the form are wrong, for example, someone has moved away or moved in, you need to let ENC know by either going online or completing the form and returning it by post. The quickest and cheapest way to reply is online. Like last year, pre-paid envelopes will not be included with the forms. The HEF is vital for local authorities to keep their electoral registers up-to-date. Not being registered can affect your applications for loans, mortgages and even mobile phone contracts. You will also lose the right to have your say at the ballot box. Steven North, leader of East Northamptonshire Council, said: “The annual canvass is an essential part of local democracy and we urge residents not to ignore the letter when it comes through their door. “Anyone in the household can respond and it’s easier than ever to do so.” The requested information is required by law. Not responding or providing false information on the form can result in a £1000 fine. Residents who do not reply will be sent a reminder in September. If a reply has not been received by October, a canvasser will visit you to collect the information on your doorstep. A NEW play area has been opened in Raunds. The Mayor of Raunds, Councillor Helen Howell opened the new play area in the town in Webb Road. It has been completely refurbished with a number of new pieces of equipment added and the whole area resurfaced and improved. At the opening Cllr Helen Howell said “It’s just fantastic to see the children having such a wonderful time playing on the equipment. “We’ve added some really exciting new pieces as well as incorporating the existing climbing frame and tyres as they are so well loved locally, we are really pleased with the area now, it has been given a new lease of life. “We have also decided to add a picnic bench to enhance the area and that will be coming soon. “We know that adults who used to play here now bring their children to play in this park and maybe they will in turn bring their children along too.” A spokesman for the Town Council explained that the total cost of the project was £25,000 but the council had been able to secure a grant of £10,000 from the Big
Lottery Fund to part fund the project. The spokesman said the funding had ensured that the project offered the townspeople excellent value for money. Cllr Lee Wilkes, Chairman of the Environment, Leisure and Recreation committee said “It was highlighted in the Vision for Raunds that residents wanted to see improvements to the play areas in the town. “Having already completed improvements to The Saxon Hall play area we are delighted to have now completed Webb Road. “We’ve already had some great feedback from local people; it’s good to know this play area will be enjoyed for years to come”. The Big Lottery Fund supports the aspirations of people who want to make life better for their communities across the UK. It is responsible for giving out 40 per cent of the money raised by the National Lottery and invest more than £650m a year in projects big and small in health, education, environment and charitable purposes. Since June 2004 it has awarded more than £8b to projects that change the lives of millions of people.

New garden blooms after help from Rotary charity
new addiTion To SaXon Hall
Whilst visiting the Saxon Hall, I noticed that an enclosed Patio to the rear of the building and thought this to be an interesting addition. I have since learnt that this is to be used mainly for wedding receptions and special parties at the Saxon Hall. Furthermore, I understand that the use of this enclosed patio will be at an extra cost to the hirer and that they are to be vetted – surprisingly at the discretion of the Mayor! This I find most puzzling, as the Mayor has no authority, unless granted by the Council and wonder what criteria will be used to vet the possible hirers? As this patio has been paid for by the Council Tax payers, I would think that these tax payers would want to get value for their money and should be available for use when this Hall is being hired. I am still waiting to see plans for the ‘Upgrade of the Saxon Hall and Gardens’ that were envisaged by the previous Council (Pre 2014). This upgrade was to be paid out of monies from Section106 Agreements of 3 Developments of approximately £215,000. Neil Harvey, Raunds ––––––––––––––––––– Please send your letters to nick@rosettapublishing.com or contact us on Twitter @RushdenReporter.
THE Rotary Club of Thrapston and Raunds has funded an addition to the Centenary Gardens at Raunds Manor School Sports College. The main garden was created in 2014/15 but there were insufficient funds available to complete the project. The Rotary Club offered to help and by July this year an additional garden was created on raised beds around a silver birch tree near to, and in the same style as the main garden. Both are within a paved area where pupils congregate during breaks and at lunch time. The work was carried out free of charge by school maintenance staff.
The cost of materials and plants was £700 and was found from within the Club’s charity account and by a matching grant from the Rotary District. The District covers the counties of Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Rutland and parts of Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire. The matching grant came from Rotary’s International’s charity – The Rotary Foundation – to which all Club’s worldwide contribute. Grants applications are carefully scrutinised before approval is given, and the success in this case is, in many ways, the result of the close association between the Thrapston and Raunds Rotary Club and the school.

There’s no ‘stopp’-ing Jim as school pays special tribute AFTER working at the school for 30 years and eight months Mr Stopps, the much loved and well respected deputy head at Bozeat Primary School and Nursery, has now decided to take retirement. Jim Stopps originally started at the school in 1980 as a classroom teacher during which time he took the lead on PE development at the school. He also ran a successful chess club leading a team to victory in the 1984 British Chess Championships. After a six year gap at Irthlingborough Junior School, Jim returned to Bozeat Primary School where he has remained until his retirement. Jim has played an integral role in the local community having taught a number of parents whose children now attend the school. The local community was given the chance to say their farewells to Jim at the local village fete in June with a ‘Stopps in the Stocks’ event. A proms in the playground

Memories from pupils in the school included “Everyone knows that Mr Stopps has a great sense of humour, he always used to sing The Wheels on the Bus really loud.” “Mr Stopps told lots of funny stories. I loved it when he took science – if was such fun.” “Mr Stopps lit up my world,” and “I’ll miss Mr Stopps so much. My mum and dad remember him from when they were at school. My mum said Mr Stopps was cool, awesome and smart.” In his leaving speech, Jim Stopps thanked the parents and children of the village for being such a great team and supporting him throughout his time at the school. He will be missed by all but we welcome him back as a governor where he will continue to have a strategic input to the school.

Percy and Master Roger Lee made their way to the secret priest hole which had been constructed by the carpenter Nicholas Owen, otherwise known as Little John. The intruders loudly declared that the whole house would be searched so thoroughly that no-one hiding there could escape. “They then,” as Fr. But the carpenter being well-skilled in constructing hiding holes in catholic houses where priests could be concealed had done his work well. The authorities searched the house thoroughly the whole day but found nothing. At last they retired disappointed, and wrote to the Council what they had done. By the twentieth century just one wing of the manor house in Spinney Road remained and in the early 1960s, then known as The Elms, it was totally demolished.
23rd Kettering Scout’s success story 18 — REPORTER #2 SEPTEMBER 2016
ON 1 September 2015, the 23rd Kettering Scout Group did not exist. Five months later, on 31 January 2016, there were 59 boys and girls aged 6 to 14 in the Group and 12 adult volunteers. The Brambleside Community Association decided they would like a Scout Group to provide fun and adventure for young people and within a matter of days, some adult volunteers decided to take on the challenge. After advertising the opening of the Group using flyers to schools and social media, the take up of places was almost immediate. Hannah Hammond, lead volunteer for the Group said, “We thought we might get 12 children turn up on the first night, but we had about 50 children attend. We were overwhelmed by the response but the great thing was that some of the parents volunteered to help with the sections.” The Group meets at Park School, Park Road, Kettering. Aubrey aged 6 joined Beavers in September and when asked what he had done said, “We’ve been to Pets at Home, a Sikh

these with the Group. I have gained in confidence and this has helped me at school. The leaders treat me as a grown up and listen to what I have to say.” Scout leader, Matt Newell said, “I was asked to help set up the Group and I jumped at the opportunity. We have had excellent support from parents and it’s great to see so many young people involved. Scouting has given me skills that I have used in all aspects of my life. It makes you think dif-
ferently and gives you opportunities you would not get elsewhere. We do activities that include abseiling, camping, craft, first aid, helping the community, local knowledge, sports and zorbing to name but a few.” Chief Scout Bear Grylls commented, “I am excited to see Scout numbers continue to rise across the UK and the big reason for this are the adventures made possible by the amazing volunteers from 23rd Kettering Scout Group. Whether it’s the opportunity to be involved with some incredible adventures, learn practical life, outdoor and teamwork skills, or helping to improve their local communities Scouts and volunteers have a brilliant time!” Some of the Cubs recently attended the County Cub Camp at Overstone Park where more than 1000 Cub Scouts from all parts of the County were celebrating 100 years of Cubs. The Group will soon be getting involved in the “A Million Hands” project where the children will decide how they can support people in their local community.

Miss Edna Smith, J.P., B.Sc., M.A. Northamptonshire County Council purchased Knuston Hall in 1949 and two ideas were put forward for its use.
Knuston Hall – Published by J. Hordon, Wellingborough P.U. 1923. The home of C. K. Greeen who bought the Hall in 1920 for £7,000. He also bought two cottages and woodlands at the same time for just under £1,000. Knuston is in the Parish of Irchester but lies close to Rushden. Mr Green was a prominent member of the Rushden Baptist Church and often entertained church members at this spacious house. During the 1939-45 war, the Hall was never commandeered but the Park was. The many trees providind good camouflage for army vehicles. First came the King’s Royal Rifles, then the Canandians and finally the Americans. The Commanding Officer;s Headquarters were in the Groom’s Room over the stables.
Robert Wigram Arkwright 1880 approx. Arkwright owned Knuston Hall from 1865 and was responsible for a great deal of alteration from what was formerly a farm house come shooting lodge He was Master of the Oakley Hounds from 1851-1885. This print of Arkwright in the Knuston Park is near one of the fine beech trees on the estate – a few still exist today. He is with his favourite horse ‘Sportsman’ which hunted with him for 13 seasons, with three of his hounds, ‘Bridesmaid’, ‘Graceful’ and ‘Racy’. The family owned the estate and hall until 1920 when C. A. K. Green became the owner. He was the last private owner. Northamptonshire County Council purchased the estate and Hall in 1949. The Arkwright family presented in 1974 a fine painting by Stephen Pearce 1887 of which this print is a copy.

SEPTEMBER IN THE GARDEN – by Milton Ernest Garden Centre
This month is lawn time
HE lawn is usually the largest area in our garden. It sets off the patio and the plants in the borders enhancing our outdoor space. It is often the domain and pride and joy of the “Man of the House” who will regularly spend time each week “Mowing the Lawn”. This together with spending more time outdoors, the children playing football and pets scampering around all takes its toll on the finely bladed plants we call Grass. September is exactly the right time to repair and restore the Lawn or to plant a new Sward.
T
As the days shorten the rate at which the grass grows slows down considerably so the first thing to do is to reduce the mowing frequency to once a fortnight until late October and then stop altogether until next spring. Also raise the cutting height of your mower blades to avoid any scalping at this late stage in the growing season. If the lawn is weedy water with Verdone a selective weed killer which will kill broad leaf weeds but
not monocotyledons like grass. If there are bad infestations of buttercup, clover or other close creeping weeds it may be necessary to do two
VOLUNTEER SHOPPING HELP
Would you be willing to help others with their shopping? As a charity we support older people to live independently in their own homes. One of the vital services we provide is an affordable shopping service to support those people who struggle to get to the supermarket and shops themselves. We are looking to recruit shopping volunteers who are willing to commit a few hours of their time each week to help those in need of this service. In return you will receive your fuel expenses, the necessary training and the good feeling you have helped others. For more information please contact Diane Eaton on 01933 315555 or email info@serve.org.uk
VOLUNTEER DRIVERS WANTED
Due to our success and huge public demand we are recruiting volunteer drivers. Our team of trained, friendly drivers take clients to all types of medical appointments. (Hospitals, Doctors Surgeries, Dentist, Opticians etc.) We are also looking for volunteer mini-bus drivers. Our minibuses take clients on shopping trips, to garden centres, to pub lunches and other trips such as the sea-side. You can volunteer as much or as little as you want. (1 or 2 days a week or every day, half days or full days…it’s up to you) Full training given and expenses paid. Being a volunteer driver is one of the most useful and rewarding ways you can offer your time to the local community. For more information please call 01933 315555 and ask to speak to James or Diane
treatments. If moss is the problem this can be successfully treated when feeding the turf. Use Westland’s Autumn All in One Aftercut which contains Ferrous Sulphate and turns the moss black making it easy to rake out of the turf seven to ten days later. The autumn lawn feed contains low levels of Nitrogen but high levels of Phosphorus for strong root growth and Potassium for thickening and strengthening the grass to withstand low winter temperatures and protect against disease. Do not mow the grass for three days before and three days after applying Aftercut and then water the lawn thoroughly. Lawn sand can also be used to kill moss in the lawn. Raking or scarifying a lawn removes the thatch at the base of the grass which tends to promote moss and other fungus disease to grow in the grass. There are three other common lawn problems Redthread, Fusarium Wilt and Fairy Rings. The first two can easily be treated by watering the lawn with Bayer Lawn Disease Fungicide but Fairy Rings are proving a challenge since the EU decided to ban another useful garden chemical. So now we have tidied things we are probably left with bare patches to over seed. Westlands Patch Pack makes this job very easy. It is a mixture of grass seed and fine seeding soil. The seeds are coated to give rapid germination and establishment. Problem dog spots can also be treated by using Miracle Dog Spot Repair again a mixture of Seed, Gypsum and Coir which help to neutralise the effects of animal urine.
The lawn should now be in much better condition when its starts to grow next spring. There are two options when planting a new lawn either to sow seed or lay turf which to choose is probably down to cost. The ground preparation is exactly the same for both. Spend time, maybe the entire summer continually removing any weeds to get the area as clean as possible. Then dig over or rotovate the soil and leave for any weed regrowth. Spraying the area with a non residual, translocate weedkiller like glyphosate is the most effective way of removing the weeds. When ready to seed or turf rake the area to a fine tilth. Apply a general fertilizer like blood, fish and bone or autumn lawn feed as a base dressing. If using seed the ideal time to sow is early September when the early morning dew will help the seed to germinate. Scatter the seed evenly and lightly rake to cover with soil. Germination takes approximately sevento 14 days so water two or three times if there is no rain. There are many good grass seed mixes now available for shady places, hard wearing play areas fine decorative lawns or for rapid establishment so ask for advice when at the garden centre. Turf should also be laid early in September on ground prepared in the same way as for seeding. Always buy professionally grown weed free turf, more expensive but by far the better investment. Lay the turf alternately like brickwork with opposite joints. Butt the turves tightly together to avoid shrinkage and separation. Water the turf every couple of days for two weeks until the roots have started to grow. Do not cut the new grass until it has grown to at least 8cms.

The Search for Water on the Moon NENE VALLEY ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY Dr Mahesh Anand
Planetary Science and Exploration, Department of Physical Sciences, The Open University
Monday, 19 September, 2016 at 8pm Chelveston Village Hall Caldecott Road Chelveston NN9 6AT
One of the moon’s greatest mysteries has long been whether it has any water. Now new research led by The Open University, reveals that most of the water inside the moon was delivered by water-rich asteroids rather than comets. Over the last decade, analyses of lunar samples have revealed that there is a considerable amount of water inside the moon which was delivered very early on in the moon’s lifetime. This research is timely, especially in light of the plans to send robotic, as well as human, prospecting missions to previously unexplored regions of the moon. Dr Mahesh Anand is one of the key research staff into this important area of discovery and his talk will focus on the work so far and its implications for space research. Visitors and Members welcome. £3 per person including tea/coffee and biscuits. Further information from Steve Williams on 01933 650331 or e-mail:chilternastro@yahoo.co.uk or Mrs Peta Jellis on 01933 356914 or email: pej@petaj26.me.uk
