A good time had by all ! Kempston Mayor James Valentine was among the guests invited to "Eid in Bedford" on 2nd July. Families, groups of friends and picnickers packed Addison Park on a warm Sunday afternoon to celebrate the Eid festival held at the end of Ramadan. Funfair rides were provided for children and there were numerous food, drink and gift stalls. The Mayor said, "I’m really pleased that the Eid in Bedford committee again chose Addison Park as a venue. It shows that Kempston is a location of choice for large outdoor events and it’s a good example of how the community can come together." The Mayor also attended "Chill in the Park" the previous Sunday. This excellent event, oriented to families and young people featured live music from several pop bands. Held every year in Addison Park, it’s sponsored by Grace Community Church and Project 229. The Mayor’s If you would like the Kempston Town Mayor to attend one of your events please contact

summer schedule will also include the annual Kempston Fun Day on Bank Holiday Saturday, 26th August. It is always a popular event that will include a variety of free entertainments with many stalls organised by local groups and businesses. This year there will be a special "Romans are Coming" enactment. So have a fun day in the Park and help raise money for local organisations and charities!

Look after the Park

The Addison Howard Park is greatly valued by the people of Kempston. So if you are attending an organised event or maybe just enjoying it with friends and family then please look after it. Litter is unsightly and unnecessary. It costs for the authorities to clean up. It is your money being used - so take it home!

Surprise celebration party for Mr and Mrs Greycourt Pat and Keith Lilley were on the receiving end of a very large surprise 40th party on Friday July 7, 2017. Over 80 invited guests gathered at Tre Fratelli’s restaurant in Kempston Wood End to celebrate 40 years of Greycourts Florists. The couple were expecting a small party of 12 to enjoy a relaxed meal at the restaurant. Pat and Keith started their floristry business in Kempston 40 years ago. They had initially began in a small way working from Pat’s family’s garage/nursery business in Willington. The couple soon realised their ambition to run their own show in 1977. Over the ensuing years the business flourished, with Keith being well-known on the flower club speaking circuit and Pat passing on her floristry skills to numerous trainees. When the time came for Pat and Keith to retire – up popped former Greycourt trainee florist, Kelly Jefferies to carry on the name of business. Keith is still known just to ‘pop in’ to check up on the latest developments at the Bedford Road shop. He shouldn’t worry the business is in safe hands.

Delivery of vital services will continue Parties, praise and prayer

TRanSFiG Kids was launched at the Church of the Transfiguration over 25 years ago and was relaunched in 2016 after a gap of some years. The current group now caters for 3-10-year-olds who meet on the second and fourth Sundays of each month at 3pm in the church hall. The children enjoy spending time together, playing games, learning songs, getting involved in craft work, listening to and taking part in interactive Bible stories and – most popular of all - sharing a snack together. Comments from the children when asked what they liked about Transfig Kids included playing games and spending time with friends, learning actions for songs and marching to them, making things, hearing the stories and in the words of one ten-year old: “i like everything about Transfig Kids.”

FUN AND EXCITEMENT Parents were also asked what they liked about Trasnfig Kids and why they encourage their children to attend and in the words of one mum: “it’s a fantastic way to use up their energy on a Sunday afternoon!” Most of the parents bring their children because it gives them a fun and exciting foundation for their faith. The children seem to enjoy all aspects of the afternoon and are eager to attend each session. Transfig Kids welcomes newcomers. Under 5s must be accompanied by an adult but parents/carers of older children are also welcome to join the fun. next term starts 3pm Sunday 10 September – for further information Tel: 01234 300816.

Playing a key role in ground-breaking cancer study

a naTiOnal scientific study led by two Bedford Hospital and Cambridge University Hospital Oncologists has profoundly reduced the painful nail damage caused by one of the most commonly used chemotherapy drugs. Dr Robert Thomas and Dr Sarah Smith led this study with the help of The national Cancer Research Clinical Trials Development Committee, advisors from the Department of Biological Science at Coventry University and independent statisticians, ensuring it had the highest possible scientific design.

FaMiliES First Bedfordshire (FfB) and Project 229 (P229) have been awarded a grant from The Harpur Trust to continue developing its youth programme, SPaCE, for children and young people affected by domestic abuse in Bedford Borough for the next three years. SPaCE was founded and established in the summer of 2016 by a unique partnership between FfB, P229 and the Early Help team at Bedford Borough Council. FfB’s specialism in supporting victims and young people affected by domestic abuse tied with P229’s expertise in community development created a strong platform to get SPaCE up and running. Thanks to start-up funding from Bedfordshire Public Health, SPaCE has been running a group for the last year. The Trust has donated £143,138 for the next three years to enable the programme to continue whilst providing the opportunity to develop a ‘healthy relationships’ project into all schools and academies across the Borough. The core SPaCE offer is a fortnightly group, ran in

the evenings for children and young people affected by domestic abuse. Participants can attend, meet other children impacted by domestic abuse, have opportunities to talk about their experiences and have fun in a safe environment. in addition, this funding will enable us to recruit a SPaCE Youth Worker who will deliver a range of services including a Borough wide assembly programme on healthy relationships and a number of small group/one to one sessions which will reach nearly 800 children per year. Michael Howe, Chief Executive at FfB said: “Without this vital donation from The Trust, SPaCE was at significant risk of being stopped.” Beccy Campbell-Grieve from P229 said: “This is a very exciting partnership and we are very thankful for the support we have received. it is a privilege to see young people growing in confidence and building healthy relationships. SPaCE is a unique and much needed resource… long may it continue!”

Home Instead Senior Care – supportive and inclusive A SENSE of inclusion and community can have such an amazing effect on wellbeing. Feelings of joy and happiness are created when we feel included within the world around us. A sense of empowerment rises when we are supported to carry out activities which we personally enjoy. We have pleasure supporting our clients to continue to access the local community and to participate with activities that are meaningful to them. If venturing outside is no longer viable, we just get very creative! Here are just a few examples of how we support clients with meaningful activities in their home environment. We have created a song book for a client who had difficulty with speech but loves old songs, played musical instruments, took photos of where a client grew up and shared them with her, researched and printed off resources, and surprised a client with a birthday tea party. Enjoying the community Bedford’s Lions club has been an active club since 1967, their volunteers have raised in the region of £20,000 each year. Back in June, for the third consecutive year, Home Instead’s clients were invited along to the Bedford Lions Club tea party. The clients who chose to attend, where supported by their Caregiver and were treated to a wonderful tea time treat. Bedford Modern School Choir and Sharnbrook Professional Choir regaled all with wonderful renditions of a variety of old style musicals and a wonderful performance of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow.’ Alzheimer’s Society Cupcake Day Also in June, people up and down the country were raising money for The Alzheimer’s Society, in the form of Cupcakes. We joined in the fun and

held an event in Wootton Village where we are based. Our office staff and Caregivers mixed up a wonderful and glorious batch of various cupcakes, that Mary Berry would have been proud of! We were joined by the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, Vinod Tailor, who enjoyed chatting to our clients and caregivers. We raised £250. Meet caregiver Chris Turner Since joining Home Instead just over 18 months ago I have had the privilege to work with some amazing caregivers and interesting clients. I would hand on heart say that it has been the best and most fulfilling role I have had in my working life and no two days are the same. The reward that you get from helping people and making a difference to their lives is unmeasurable. Perhaps one of the most rewarding times I can recall was at the funeral of a client who sadly passed away, where a packed congregation where told during the eulogy what a difference Home Instead and myself had made to the deceased life

and to have this then reinforced by his daughter and niece later when I ran into them when shopping in the town words cannot truly describe. The support that we all receive from the office team in helping us do our role to the best of abilities should not be under estimated by anyone who comes into contact with Home Instead as they are always on the end of the phone to discuss any issues I have come across and provide me with guidance and direction. On a final point, I would just like to thank everyone who has given me this opportunity to be an angel and make a difference and I hope that when my time comes that I will need care as it probably will having a mother who is diabetic and a father who has Alzheimer that people like you all will still be around to make my life fulfilled and comfortable Working with Home Instead is rewarding and meaningful. We provide full training and you become part of a trusted, local team. Call Jackie on 01234 868820.

We can be heroes…

Primrose Car Service

On THE 7th July, a team of ‘heroes’ undertook the 3 Peaks Challenge… aiming to climb the three highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales in 24 hours. The team of women from ‘Transition Coaching’ led by personal trainer larissa Clark and local fundraiser Den Tailor, are raising money to support three local, national and international charities; Project 229 (a pro-active community centre that provides activities and services for people of all ages from 0-99 and beyond!), CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and Friends of CME Trust (seeking to relieve sickness and poverty in north-east Democratic Republic of Congo in the centre of africa). The ‘We can be Heroes’ team climbed a staggering 42k in distance and 3,408 meters up to conquer Ben nevis (Scotland), Scafell Pike (England) and Snowdon (Wales) to complete the challenge. They had some challenging

In 2016, £750,000 from the Bedford Hospitals Charity financed the addition of new treatment chairs and the expansion of the Primrose Oncology Unit in Bedford Hospital, and the provision of very advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment in some associated departments. These needs were brought about by the increasing numbers of patients needing treatment in this excellent and highly regarded cancer care unit. The increase resulted in more patients being taken to and from Addenbrooke’s Hospital, by the volunteer drivers of the Primrose Car Service, the free service provided by the Bedford Hospitals Charity. Volunteers drive Vauxhall cars, three of which are bought by the charity and a fourth car which is loaned and frequently renewed by Vauxhall Motors.

They finished triumphantly in just over 36 hours (36 hours 10 mins in progress, 23 hours 35 mins walking). no mean feat for this group of intrepid climbers, some of whom had only climbed their first ever mountain during their lengthy pre-challenge training walks. local fundraiser Dennis Tailor said: “Having organised and led more than a dozen 3 Peaks Challenges’ over recent years i can honestly say that the ‘We Can Be Heroes’ team was up there with the best of them! Well done ladies…you were brilliant. i’m very proud of you all!” if you would like to help sponsor the ‘We can be Heroes’ team and find out more about the charities being supported, please visit: www.give.net/WeCouldBeHeroes 3Peaks2017

Kempston Rotary closes with a bang, not a

iT COUlD have been a bitter sweet occasion, but in fact there was a lot of jollity and good humour and high spirits on the night. On Wednesday evening July 28th, at Corner 5 Restaurant Box End, the Rotary Club of Kempston met for its last meeting. Present were the remaining Rotarians, their wives, several widows of past Kempston Rotarians, Rotarian friends from neighbouring clubs to which the Kempston Rotarians are distributing themselves and representatives from the District including the District Governor John Dehnel who received back the club’s charter that had originally been presented to it in January 1974. Tributes were paid to the long history of fellowship, good times,

and contributions to local and international community projects over the period of 43 years. The club is particularly proud of its association with and support for The Rotary Foundation (TRF), Rotary international’s only charity which supports humanitarian programmes worldwide and which has supplied, over the years, supporting grants for some of the club’s activities both in our community here and internationally. TRF is also supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which matches funding, 2:1, for the eradication worldwide of poliomyelitis. as previously reported Rotarians from the Kempston and De Parys Clubs planted 5000 purple crocus bubs on a roundabout on the newly opened bypass. ity Fun for Young People (F4YP), as a charity trustee and as secretary to the Betjeman Society. Kempston Rotary Club has been continuing with its active programme even in the past months, with the Know Your Blood Pressure Day in June when 147 people had their blood pressure measured, several times in some cases, and when two individuals were discovered needing urgent referral and a further 17 routine follow-up. The club is also involved in a project, Fresh Start, with F4YP to produce a supply of reading mentors to encourage the love of our wonderful language and literary heritage in reluctant readers, and this has been generously support by TRF. The results of this particular project will be assessed after detailed analysis later in the year, although Rotarians will continue to be involved in mentoring this activity during the summer holiday. in similar vein, the club has worked with English departments in some local schools, holding a Young Writer Competition where the entries received weighed 1.25 Kg and gave some literate but non-educational Rotarians considerable pleasure in the judging process. a lot of good material had been submitted and the budget went overboard, but then that’s what budgets are for. in the belief that to feed one’s fellow man is a noble activity the Rotary Club sponsored a Young Chef Competition in the local upper school which was judged by local chef of considerable repute. We were very impressed with the splendid meals served up by the competitors, and at least one young chef is entering training at Bedford College this autumn. We also think we have found a very good candidate for the Rotary Youth leadership award (RYla), where the club is sponsoring a young man for the week’s course in

leadership skills and personal development at the Outdoor Centre at West Perry. The club has done this for many years now and the course can indeed be a life changing experience. Once again TRF has supported the club in sponsoring a week’s holiday for a young woman with a number of disabilities at the Calvert Trust Centre in the lake District. We were able to give a fabulous young woman the chance to be put outside her comfort zone in complete safety where she responded by accomplishing rather more than had been anticipated, increasing her self confidence which should be of use to her in the future at her work. We are most grateful to The Rotary Foundation for its most generous help in this matter and we consider that the money has been well spent with a most encouraging outcome.

FLOURISHNG ARRANGEMENT Kempston Rotary club is not just concerned with local initiatives, we are very much hoping that with the Bedford Rotary Club we shall be able to revive our twinning relationship, which was established in 1981, with the French club Bohain-le Cateau-Guise in Picardy, as this had been a flourishing arrangement and which has had an educational effect on a number of attitudes over the years. The Kempston Rotarians are not disappearing from the face of the earth, they will continue to try and support community projects in Kempston but under the auspices of the Bedford based clubs which i am sure will welcome the opportunity to take on our Kempston contacts.

AUUGST IN THE GARDEN – by Milton Ernest Garden Centre

T’S august ostensibly the hottest month of the year so many plants flowering now reflect the brilliant fiery colours of heat ranging from yellow, orange, red and pink. They use bright colours to attract insects to visit the flowers. as the bees, butterflies, ants, beetles and moths perch on the petals foraging for nectar pollen becomes stuck to their bodies and is transferred to other flowers allowing fertilization to occur and seeds to start developing. The more vibrantly intense the flower colour or scent the more insects are attracted. Single flowers generally have more nectar and pollen than hybridised double flowers and are at their best in august giving lots of colour in the mixed borders and nectar and pollen to the bees, butterflies and other insects. Simple open flowers with daisy, tubular and trumpet shape flowers are often the most visited. Single Dahlias have simple open eight petal flowers and vibrant colours. Some new varieties to consider planting are Dahlia Fifteen love, a rich orange flower tinted pink with really dark bronzy black foliage, Mystic Enchantment, with bright red flowers which contrast beautifully with the leaves. Dahlia

Some like it hot

Eye Candy has stunning orange red and cream flowers again with dark foliage while Waterlily is brilliant pink. Crocosmia formally called Monbretia is an upright perennial plant with spikes of small tubular flowers in great hot colours and is very easy to grow. Crocosmia Peach Sunrise has flaming orange flowers and forms clumps which will increase in size every year. Crocosmia Buttercup is golden yellow and grows well in sun or shade. Rudbeckias have brilliant daisy flowers in yellow and gold with chocolate brown centres. They are hardy perennial plants which grow easily in full sun and will tolerate dry conditions. They form neat clumps towards the front of the border and associate very well when planted with grasses like Ursinia Rubra and Carex Buccannii. Salvias have upright spikes of tubular flowers in shades of bright scarlet and pink. Two particularly attractive varieties are Salvia Hot lips and little Kiss. They have pinky red and white bicolour

flowers on compact growing disease resistant plants. Salvia Salmon Dance is an unusual shade of soft pink and Salvia Radio Red is glowing red with the flowers lasting a long time. Echinacea is another hardy perennial with daisy shaped flowers ranging in colour from white, cream, bright yellow, red, orange, pink and purple. The variety Chunky Purple is compact in habit, attracts many insects and has large intensely pink flowers. Tomato Soup is tomato red flowering from august through September, now Cheesier and Cleopatra have large golden yellow flowers while Orange Skipper is deep burnt orange with a dark brown velvety centre. Japanese anemones again with simple open petal flowers keep the pink colour going through august into October. anemone Robustissima, Seranade, Pamina and Montrose are all good new hardy varieties which grow well in sun or partial shade. Sedum, the ice Plant, is a great addition for any mixed planting. it

has a neat sculptural habit which gives shape and form to any border. The foliage can be green, blue, purple or variegated depending on variety. it thrives in a sunny place and dry soil and looks great in any cottage garden. Sedum Carl and Pizazz both have pink flowers in late summer, hold their flowers all through winter and look great covered in early morning frost in December and January. Penstemons provide lots of flower colour and food for insects. Their spikes of Foxglove like flowers vary from pale pink and white, pink, red, ruby, lilac and purple. They are easy to grow in any well drained soil in sun or partial shade. Particularly colourful varieties are Taffy Blueberry, purple pink with a white centre, Taffy Grape, very deep pink and white centre, Taffy Strawberry, red pink with a white centre and King George and Firebird which are red. From this selection i hope you will find some sizzling plants to enhance your garden in the hot hazy days of summer.

Garden notes

quantity now and the basil is knee high. ( basil is not really worth growing from seed.

by Richard Callaghan

DESPiTE a prolonged period of dry weather which is untypical of this area at this time of the year, most of the crops seem to be doing well. Even the potatoes which are notoriously thirsty are cropping well. after the frost which reduced everything to pulp seems not to have had too much of an effect. When the first earlies had flowers i tried a root and was surprised at how many and how big some of them were. My only disappointment is my runner beans but that is my fault for not watering them enough. But there is only so much time. Oh yes, we’ve arrived at why do you grow so many?, time. nobody says you have to eat everything but you can’t eat what you haven’t got and we have got friends (i hope). i planted two ‘Marketmore’ and two ‘Burpless’ cucumbers at the end of the of the tomato tunnel to grow up a trellis. They have outgrown their allocated space and are starting to escape into the surrounding plots. They are also producing fruit at a rate that makes the courgettes look like amateurs. Soon i hope to be bottling tomatoes and tomato paste as the tomatoes are beginning to ripen in

i go to our favourite local supermarket with the orange logo and for half the price of a packet of seed i buy a largish pot and prick out the little plants into the greenhouse border alongside the tomatoes and away they go. apparently they do not like the same conditions as tomatoes but they seem happy enough to me.

now that bits of ground are being cleared as things come to an end i am planning what and where things are going next year. Using Exel i have made a map of my plot and each line i take to be one foot so i can plan fairly accurately where everything is going to be. Of course as the saying goes ‘The best laid plans of mice and men’. But i can always change the plan. The important thing is to note the changes. and to date the plan. as people of a certain age can look at the wrong sheet if there isn’t a clue to the date. By doing this it is also possible to note what went wrong if necessary and why, to help with the following years planning. it is also one piece of paper less when it comes to buying or ordering seeds and so on for the following year.

TIME FOR RETREAT

Recently i spent the week on retreat; taking time out to catch up with myself and with God. This year i travelled to the Franciscan House in alnmouth, on the coast of northumberland. i joined John, Thomas, Michael, Jason, Joseph and Reg, the brothers who make up the community there. it was a time to slow down, to rest, to pray, to read and above all else to be still. i especially valued the silence that was kept for part of the day. it was also an opportunity to walk along the beach, enjoy the rugged northumberland coastline and to ponder the landscape. it was just a shame about the rain! all of us can benefit from ‘time out’. and although a religious retreat house may not be right for everyone, it is by no means only those with faith who value what they offer. For some years, i chaired the management committee of launde abbey, a retreat house on the site of a former augustinian abbey, which is set within stunning leicestershire countryside. i espe-

peace which the world cannot give: your precious gift to us in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Retreats take many forms. Some are totally silent; others filled with a cycle of prayer and worship; yet others are centred on art or music. at their heart, they are about ‘stepping out’; taking the opportunity to have a break from the pressures of daily life and the demands upon us. it is using the stillness and the silence to rest and to be renewed. Retreats are also a time for ‘stepping into’. Using the space in every sense as a gateway to going deeper into both oneself and into God. That is why for me the four-fold pattern of prayer each day with the Franciscans was so important. it drew me into God’s presence and held me there. So why not consider a retreat? look on-line http://www.retreats.org.uk/index.php; ask a vicar or drop me a line and i will point you in the right direction.
