ROBERT BRUCE MIDDLE SCHOOL E are, Hayley, Lovemore, Jack and Chloe and we are the Head Boys and Head Girls at Robert Bruce Middle School. We want to tell you about the fun we have at Robert Bruce Middle School. On Friday 10th October 2014 we had a pyjama day and raised £250 for ‘Magic Moments’ a charity supported by Haart Estate Agents. We also had a MacMillan Coffee morning recently and raised over £200. Our staff baked some lovely cakes to sell. As Head Boys and Girls we are role models for Robert Bruce and are asked to help in many ways. Last month our Head Teacher Mrs Parker was invited to look around the new Kempston Rural School and we were very proud to accompany Mrs Parker and be representing our school. We also help out at events such as the Open Evenings. And we love helping show new and prospective pupils around. We all love our duties because we are able to communicate with others in a really positive way. We want everyone to know how much our school has changed and how much better it is. We are really excited about our future at Robert Bruce Middle School. If you are joining a Middle School next September and you want to speak to us about Robert Bruce we would love to show you around and tell you about our school.

W

‘‘ I am so proud of my pupils here at Robert Bruce, they love our charity events and work very hard to make sure they happen. We hope those of you who came enjoyed our Open Evening. If you were unable to attend, please feel free to call us so we can arrange a visit Mrs Karen Parker HEAD TEACHER

Kempston’s Kenyan connection

(l-r): Stan Gonese, Martin Ivy, Andrew Stadnyk, Tim Clarke, Bill Morris, Lynne Morris, Gary Ingerson (Chairman), Raj Mandal (Director of Football) and John Guniey (1st Team Manager).

WHERE would we be without social media? The internet is a wonderful tool, and social media helps in bringing people together. Whether it is long lost friends and family or new contacts. People who share common ideals. Facebook was instrumental in connecting Gary Ingerson, who is Chairman of AFC Kempston Town & Bedford College to Bill Morris and his wife Lynn.

Bill and Lynn run a charity called the ‘Kenyan Schools Project’. Over the last ten years the couple have travelled regularly to Kenya. Lynn lived in South Africa as a child and always had a place in her heart for Kenya. So it was a natural choice for her to become involved in charitable work supporting the children of that country. In 2007 they formed a recognised charity and have been rais-

ing money for educational and sportswear supplies for schools and orphanages particularly in Nairobi and Mombassa. Last year they raised enough money to build an additional double classroom at the Gopha Primary School in Mombasa. D u r i n g G a r y a n d B i l l ’s Facebook exchanges it became clear that AFC Kempston Town & Bedford College could help out

the project in the sportswear department. The team were in the enviable position of having new kit supplied by their sponsors (AL & G Abbott and MJ Meats) every season. The kit room was full! So what better way to recycle the kit, than to donate it to this tremendous charity. Eight football kits were sorted out for the Kenyan Schools Project, along with these, various pieces of training apparatus were also donated. On Saturday October 4th, Bill and Lynn visited the Hillgrounds Road club to meet Gary and some of the first team players in person and to receive the very welcome donations. There was some debate as to whether the huge amount of kit would fit in Bill’s car, but everything was wedged in, even if Lynn had to have some on her lap! The charity sends out regular containers to Kenya, they may contain desks, school uniforms and equipment. The next one will have a little bit of Kempston in it! But that’s not the end of the story, in club’s bar there are boxes for players to donate out-grown or out of fashion boots to the project. The boot donation scheme will run to at least the end of December. The club is also trying to encourage other local teams to follow their example and give to the Kenyan Schools Project.

St John’s Special School and College truly is outstanding!

ST JOHN’S are delighted to celebrate the news that a recent Ofsted inspection led to the school being awarded its fourth consecutive judgement of ‘outstanding’. This is an especially remarkable achievement for the school community as it is their first inspection under the new, more rigorous, inspection framework. Ofsted’s report recognises the pupils’ excellent attitudes towards learning, their outstanding behaviour and the exceptional progress that they make, commenting that “pupils are happy and relaxed” and “valued as individuals...the school does much to raise their self-esteem.” The staff at St John’s are committed to their school specialism of Communication and Interaction, which Ofsted note is shown through “highly developed methods for promoting pupils’ communication skills”. Ofsted also acknowledge the school’s outstanding teaching: “both teachers and assistants provide pupils with a great deal of encouragement and support. This instils in them a love of learning and a belief that they can succeed.” Amanda Rizzo, Interim Head Teacher said: “We are so proud of all our staff, parents, carers, governors and – most importantly – pupils. Together, they embody our motto ‘Achieving Together.’” Ron Babbage, Executive Principal, added: “The governors and leadership team are committed to using this report to continue improving our provision; we are incredibly excited about the future development of St John’s.”

£2.5 Million boost for Bedford town centre

BEDFORD town centre is going to benefit from an injection of £2.5 Million over five years now the Business Improvement District has been voted in for a third term. The money from businesses is managed by businesses and is used to promote the town centre to prospective visitors. It operates under the marketing brand of Love Bedford. Director Christina Rowe said: “Times are getting tougher and the local council admits it doesn’t have the funds to push the town centre. A BID means businesses can work together to help the town centre thrive. The bigger businesses effectively subsidise the smaller independent outlets via a BID to increase footfall in town for the benefit of all. Without a BID there would no way of raising such a sum.” Bedford was the first county town in the UK to vote in a BID in 2005, under the late Mayor Frank Branston. The local MP at that time, Patrick Hall, was part of the

Sales and Marketing Manager Natasha Trudgill and a BID Bluecap.

Labour Government which agreed the legislation governing BIDs. Since then the coalition Government has given its backing to BIDs as a way to save town cen-

tres. In Bedford only those businesses with a rateable value of £8,100 or more pay the levy which equates to 2% of their rateable value. This

is in addition to Business Rates, but the levy goes straight into a pot managed by a Board of levy-paying businesses. The BID is not run by the council, but as a town centre property owner, the council pays a levy and has a seat on the Board. Projects and campaigns run under the Love Bedford banner are outlined on the BID website www.lovebedford.co.uk An AGM will be held of the BID at which new Board members will be elected. The voting figures showed 115 businesses, with a rateable value of £8.7 Million voted YES to the BID v 106, with a rateable value of £2 Million voted No. *One of the success stories of the BID has been the Love Bedford vouchers of which more than £700,000 have been sold and which in turn put money back into the tills of local businesses. They are now on sale at the Bedford Swan Hotel, which is putting Bedford in the spotlight this winter with its own riverside ice rink.

NHS Ambulance Service first aid courses THE EAST of England Commercial Services Team has been running first aid training courses for over 13 years initially working from within Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. The training now operates throughout the six counties (Bedfordshire, Hertford shire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk). This commercial work has supported the funding of front-line ambulances by giving valuable training to the wider public who can help in an emergency before the arrival of the NHS

Ambulance personnel. Our profits are reinvested into frontline services. Our clients come from a broad background including business personnel (shop keepers, administrators, health and safety officers etc.) university students and staff, school teachers and school students, fire fighters, police firearms staff, zoo keepers, research staff, electrical component manufacturers, prison staff, physiotherapists and other health care staff including Dentists,

GPs and nursing staff. We have taught 3,000 children in 25 schools during this past year. These students have learnt valuable life-savings skills. Each student has also been provided with our support materials. Some of our commercial profit is used to fund school work. Initiatives in the education of basic life-saving skills demonstrate the absolute value to the community created by work in the school student setting. Analysis of data gained through similar projects in Europe

and America send a clear message: the necessity to equip youngsters with the skills and knowledge in basic life- saving skills raises out of hospital survival chances.

Public Access Defibrillators PADs

We work in collaboration with our Community Partnership Team, AED manufacturers, the national charity SADs UK, and other interested parties. We are passionate about the provision of Public Access Defibrillators in schools, other areas of high footfall, and rural locations etc. Work in this field includes the training to those who may need to use the machines. We have worked closely with Bedford Rotary Groups who have shown a keen interest in the need for AEDs and they have funded local AED initiatives. Be trained by the professionals. Befriending service

FRIENDS for Life is a Bedfordbased charitable project, providing friendship and company to residents of Bedfordshire care homes. A significant number of residents in Bedfordshire care homes are socially isolated, receiving few or no external visitors. The Campaign to End Loneliness states that ‘loneliness is a bigger problem than simply an emotional experience. Research shows that loneliness and social isolation are harmful to our health: lacking social connections is a comparable risk factor for early death as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and is worse for us than well-known risk factors such as obesity and physical inactivity’ (www.campaigntoendloneliness.org). Friends for Life recognises how effective friendship is in reducing loneliness and recruit volunteers to become personal befrienders, offering time, friendship and company to those who most need it. Most, but not all, of those benefiting from Friends for Life befrienders are older people. Friends for Life currently has 45 active volunteers, visiting 55 residents across 21 different homes in Bedford Borough and have recently begun to expand their work into Central Bedfordshire. Work to begin on final phase of Western Bypass

THE CONSTRUCTION of the crucial final phase of the Bedford Western Bypass is due to begin within weeks after a Mayoral Decision authorised the appointment of the contractor to carry out the works. Breheny Civil Engineering won the tender process after scoring highest for both quality and price. A completed Western Bypass has featured in national and local plans and strategies for more than 50 years. The project to construct the long-awaited crucial final section was propelled forward following the Council decision to issue Compulsory Purchase Orders to acquire the land needed for the road, alongside work to seek the land and rights required by agreement. The Council was successful in reaching agreement with all the principal landowners and interested parties, and the orders were confirmed. The success of this work enabled a tender process for the contract to construct the road to go ahead, culminating in the Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, signing the decision to authorise

Mayor Dave Hodgson was among several VIPs who took part in a sod cutting ceremony on Friday October 24, to mark the start of work on the Bedford Northern Bypass.

the appointment of Breheny Civil Engineering to carry out the works. The Mayor said: “We are delighted to have overcome the series of obstacles which had blocked this vital project for

Bedford. Work will now begin within weeks on a project which will bring new investment and jobs to Bedford Borough, while making it easier for all road users to get around.

“This is excellent news for our road network, for the local economy and for local quality of life, and when work starts on site it will not be a moment too soon. The completed bypass will reduce congestion in and around Bedford and cut journey times, while making this location even more attractive to investors.” The final phase of the Western Bypass will link the A4280 at Bromham Road with the A6 at Clapham. The first phase of the bypass, the Branston Way, links the A421 to the south west of Bedford and Kempston with the A4280 at Bromham Road. Overcoming the obstacles blocking the building of the road has been a top Council priority. The Council has procured the £18.6million scheme thanks to the successful gathering of external funding as part of a mix of resources, combined with the use of its available powers to secure the use of the land. Construction is expected to take approximately 18 months, with the new road due to be open in spring 2016.

Owl Time visit Camestone Lower School by Paula Kirkup

CHILDREN in Years 1 and 2 at Camestone Lower School had an exciting morning when Owl Time came to visit us last week. Five owls – a Barn Owl, a Tawny Owl, a Big-Eared Owl, a Little-Eared Owl and a Snowy Owl – gave us a fantastic display of their flying skills. We learned that owls have very sharp talons

for catching their prey, so the children had to wear gauntlets to hold them. We also found out that owls fly silently; some of the children lay down with their eyes closed while the owl flew over them, and discovered that they couldn’t hear them, but they could feel the wind from their wings as they went by. The two handlers gave us lots of fascinating facts about the owls.

They told us that owls can’t move their eyes, and that’s why they have to turn their heads so far around. We also learned that you can find out what an owl has been eating if you look at the owl pellets that it regurgitates.

After the display, all the children had the chance to have their photo taken with one of the owls. We had a very interesting and exciting morning, and we would like to thank Owl Time for coming to see us.

34 New police recruits inducted

LAST month 34 new recruits joined Bedfordshire Police, adding to the 73 who joined the Force earlier in the year. Eight of this number are experienced transferees from other constabularies and several have waited through the period of the four year recruitment freeze to be able to join Bedfordshire Police. The new recruits competed against nearly 1500 other applicants for the opportunity to join the Force as police officers.

ALL MAKES SERVICING AND MOT CENTRE

Commenting, Police and Crime Commissioner Olly Martins said: “The recruitment of 107 police officers reflects the Chief Constable’s and my determination to protect visible front-line policing in the county because we know that’s what the public values most. Delivering this at a time of austerity and shrinking budgets has entailed careful financial management. It has also meant hard choices in relation to issues like police stations and

Dan’s doing a great job

IN AUGUST’S issue of Kempston Calling we featured Daniel Guerin, who is raising money for his Brain Tumour Charity. We are delighted to report that following a highly successful BBQ at the King William and an evening at Salon 7, he then organised events at the Cock Inn and a charity golf day. These have resulted in the charity benefiting by over £3000. Daniel has some more events coming up towards Christmas.

Coffee morning success

THE residents of Edward Arnold Court, Hillgrounds Road, held a fund raising event on September 26, as part of the MacMillan Big Coffee Morning. This year they raised £674 up on the £620 they raised last year.

PARKING IN RESPONSE

N response to Laura Charnock’s letter in October’s Kempston Calling, we agree that parking is a problem in many areas of Kempston especially at the top of roads such as Silverdale Street which join Bedford Road. There are additional pressures here from lorries making deliveries to businesses and drivers who stop to purchase items from the shops. At the moment, very large lorries frequently park on Silverdale Street; this inconveniences residents and stops them parking their own vehicles. We aim to prevent this by having a new loading bay marked on the main road. There will be new double yellow lines on the Cottage Bakery side of Silverdale Street with a loading ban to stop the dangerous practice of vehicles unloading on the corner. The single yellow line outside of Gill’s Supermarket will be shortened to allow for some additional residents’ parking. These improvements are subject to consultation but have been approved in principle; since the Council’s funds for this type of work are spent for this financial year we are paying for them out of our Ward Funds. Ward funding has also paid for recent double yellow lines at the junction of Springfield Avenue and Stuart Road, at the turning area in Dunkirk Close and on the corner with Walcourt Road, at the eastern end of Ashdale Avenue

and on the corners of Savannah Close, Malakand Road, Coniston Close and Lunedale Close. These are in response to residents’ complaints about dangerous or antisocial parking. Speeding traffic is equally a problem and we hope that a 20 mph zone will be in place early next year within most of the central area bounded by Spring Road, Elstow Road, Bunyan Road and Bedford Road. Variable speed cameras - the first to be installed in Kempston - will help to enforce the national limit on Spring Road. The 20 mph zone follows a residents’ consultation earlier this year which showed that the great majority support the idea. As part of the same consultation the majority of residents voted against having a controlled parking zone. James Valentine & Mohammed Nawaz Borough Councillors for Kempston Central & East Ward

£20,000 fine for benefit fraudster

MANzOOR Begum, 64, of Hurst Grove, Bedford, has been ordered by Luton Crown Court to pay a total of £39,521 following her conviction for a £13,800 Benefit Fraud. A joint investigation between officers of the Department for Work and Pension (DWP) and Bedford Borough Council commenced following information that Manzoor Begum was due to benefit from the estate of her late husband. Following an Investigation it was identified that Manzoor Begum had savings of £40,000 and an interest in a number of properties at the time she made her claim for Pension Credit and Council Tax Benefit which she had dishonestly failed to declare to the DWP and the Council. Manzoor Begum was interviewed under caution and denied the offence. At the first hearing at Luton Magistrates Court Manzoor Begum pleaded not guilty and elected for trial by jury at Luton Crown Court. The total overpayment of Pension Credit and Council Tax Benefit was calculated at £13,847.97, which must be repaid. Following a trial at Luton Crown Court, Manzoor Begum was found guilty of both charges of dishonestly making false representations to claim benefit. Manzoor Begum was fined £20,000, to be paid within six months and ordered to pay legal costs of £3,500. Action was also taken against Manzoor Begum under the Proceeds of Crime Act and the court ordered her to repay £16,021 within three months or risk being sent to prison. Cllr Shan Hunt, Executive Member for Revenue and Benefits, said: “This crime is repulsive. Benefits are there to help those in need and in this case have been abused by a greedy person.” In his summing up, the Judge commented that although she had partly inherited the situation she was in, she had continued with it out of greed.

Kempston Concert Band needs you!

Kempston Concert Band currently consists of two ensembles, the unimaginatively named junior and senior bands. If you are a wind or percussion player, of any standard, looking to join a community band and play a diverse mix of music, then this could be the organisation for you! We meet during term time on Monday evenings at Kempston West Methodist Church Hall, which is situated next door to Tema Music on Kempston High Street. The junior band rehearses from 7pm until 7.55 and then the seniors take over until 9.15pm. The junior band is appropriate for beginners, players of Grade 1-

4 standard or musicians who may just be a little ‘rusty’. The term junior is quite misleading as the current age range consists of people between the ages of nine and sixty eight! The senior band is for players of a more advanced standard. Many of our members choose to play in both groups. We perform three main formal concerts each year, one at the end of each term. We are also available for bookings throughout the year. For our main concerts, we like to support local charities and, in 2014 alone, have raised pleasing sums of money for Headway and Bedford and

District Cerebral Palsy Society. Our next concert takes place at 7.30 on Monday 15th December at Kempston East Methodist Church, where we will be supporting the Motor Neuron Disease Association. Our most recent concert in July saw an exciting idea and partnership come to fruition. To commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the passing of the composer, Barry Gray, we commissioned one of the finest up and coming arrangers in the U.K. today, Alfie Pugh, to produce six wind band arrangements of some of Gray’s much loved television themes from all of those iconic Gerry

Anderson productions. The original scores were used for these fantastic arrangements and after a lot of hard work, the band gave debut performances of such classics as Stingray, Captain Scarlet and of course, Thunderbirds. Despite having quite an influx of players over the last year, we are always looking for new members to join each band. There is no audition process and we can accommodate pretty much anyone. Why not give it a try? For further information or to contact us, please visit our website at www.kempstonconcertband.com. Gareth King – Musical Director

Get a taste for the classical!

WHAT CAN you get for £10.00 these days? A ‘dine-in’ meal for two from M&S, an off-peak rail ticket for a single journey, a ticket to the cinema, a music CD... not a lot. However, for the same sum of £10.00, you can enjoy a ‘Tempting Taster’ with local choir Danesborough Chorus. “If you have ever wanted to join a choir and sing wonderful classical music, we are offering the opportunity, particularly for sopranos, to join the Danesborough Chorus rehearsals as we prepare for this season’s concerts,” explained choir chairman Amanda Nott. “At the moment, we are learning Bach’s B minor Mass for our November concert in Milton Keynes Theatre, and at the same time, we will be preparing music for our atmospheric Christmas Carol Concert in Woburn Church. So why not come along, aim for those wonderful top notes, and enjoy the camaraderie of choral singing?” Danesborough Chorus is one the region’s most established and renowned choirs, and rehearsals are held every Wednesday at Aspley Guise Village Hall. The Tempting Taster is just that - there’s no pressure to come to every rehearsal and no need to sing the Bach B minor Mass in November. “But hopefully, our ‘tasters’ will feel confident about learning Christmas music and joining in our final performance of the year,” said Amanda. “There’s nothing quite as rewarding as singing songs and carols, traditional and new, in our Christmas Concert in the festive atmosphere of Woburn Church.” This is a great opportunity for anyone who hasn’t sung for a while or is new to choral singing and not yet confident about joining this type of choir. Call Carol Yirrell 01296 680328 for information and encouragement. It could be the best £10 you ever spend with nothing to lose.

Fund raising success for cancer charities

FOUR local people, Carmine Cientanni, Gary Ingerson, Michaela Martindale and Becky Lapworth have been raising money for Cancer Charities this summer. For the fourth year running they have organised a football fun day and an auction, in aid of Cancer Research and Children with Cancer. This year the football took place on 20th July and included the Teresa Lambiase five-a-side tournament and the Pink DD Cup. The Teresa Lambiase tournament was started by Carmine six years ago in honour of a young family friend who

sadly passed away. This was the seventh tournament, and again was very well attended and fiercely contested. The winners were Key Parker, a team that had made the journey from Lutterworth to attend the event. The Pink DD Cup is the fun part of the day, and see’s women in bra’s battling it out against a team of men in pants and wellies. Whilst this is fun, there is still an edge to the game, and the women certainly take no prisoners. This is proven in the fact that the ladies were once again winners for the second consecutive year.

The AFC Kempston Town and Bedford College auction took place on Saturday 2nd August, and once again the generosity of local and national businesses was overwhelming. Some of the main prizes were a Formula One Red Bull Nose cone fetching over £300 and a Spa Day at Whittlebury Hall (Kindly donated by Hollands Smith) that raised £200. There was also a weeks holiday to Spain and closer to home, a nights stay in Bedford’s very own Swan Hotel. The auctioneer, Gary Ingerson, bringing the hammer down with an incredible £2,150 raised just from the auction lots themselves. A fantastic night was finished off with a disco, a raffle and copious amounts of generosity. A massive thank you goes to AFC Kempston and staff, for once again providing the perfect venue for both events. A special thank you goes to local company MJ Meats, for once again providing all the BBQ food, and to SSG and Mini Strikers for providing the inflatables for the fun day. Also a big thank you to all the following companies for their support: AL & G Abbotts, Asendia, Mark Tebbutt, DWM Technical Solutions, Kempston Scaffolding, Bengal Brasserie, Sportsform, Elite Therapy, Kempston Windows, Landhurst Roofing, Beauty by Roxanne, Coromel Cakes, Mario Hair Design, Meadwell Paving, Mitre Prostar, Greycourt Florist, Commando Group Fitness, Stone Willy’s, Reactiv 8, PHT Print, VJD Designs, Wells & Young, Warwickshire Country Club, The

Embankment Hotel, Force India, Pro Photo Booths, DJ Home Interiors, Santaniellos, Kelly Smith, Kay’s Day’s Out and Local magician Dean Maudsley. The final total raised was an incredible £7,039.29, which brings the total over the last four years to just over £22,000. Thanks to our sponsors!

As we enter our 25th season, AFC Kempston Town and Bedford College are pleased to announce the continued support of AL & G Abbotts as the clubs main sponsor. Also continuing their sponsorship, are MJ Meats, who are the kit suppliers for both of our Sunday teams. We are very grateful to both local companies for their ongoing support and generosity. Without the support from local companies, grass roots football would diminish at a far greater rate than we are currently experiencing.

School’s new building now open

A BEDFORD Borough village has celebrated the opening of a brand new lower school, as the Council’s major investment programme in school buildings and facilities continues. Kempston Rural Lower School was officially opened to schedule last Friday by the Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson. The new school has been built by Willmott Dixon. Kempston Rural was originally located at another site within the village, however its new site allows for an impressive expansion – and now staff and pupils have settled in. With a national crisis in primary school places on the horizon, the new Kempston Rural Lower School is another illustration of how the crisis has been averted in Bedford Borough. This has involved careful planning to identify and meet demand via an ongoing programme of major, targeted investment in expanded or new schools, of which Kempston Rural is another example. Bedford Borough Council will invest over £48 million in schools from 2014 – 2017. The Council has already invested heavily to ensure the creation of excellent teaching and learning space. This has included the construction and opening of three brand new 420 place Primary Schools and the expansion and upgrading of many more. Head teacher at Kempston Rural Lower School, Angela

Stanbridge, said: “Kempston Rural is a very special place for children to learn and grow. Our new school building has wonderful facilities. It will ensure that we can continue to create a stimulating and exciting learning environment for children in the first years of their educational journey.” The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “Ofsted have judged Kempston Rural Lower School to be outstanding, which is a testament to the efforts of the pupils, the staff and the whole school community. They need and deserve outstanding facilities for teaching and learning, and that is exactly what this project has provided.” Chris Tredget, managing director for Willmott Dixon in the northern Homes Counties said: “As a locally based company with a strong presence in Bedfordshire, we’re delighted to have completed our latest project for Bedford Borough Council. It’s another example of the Council’s excellent investment programme to improve schools in the county and we are proud to be a key partner in that process.” A crowd gathered to witness the launch. Two Bedford Borough Council staff, Tom Bennett and Kevin Yerrill, who are on the Board of Governors were also present on the day, accompanied by The Chairman of the Governors Mr. Arnold Küpper, Parish Council members and rep-

resentatives from Willmott Dixon and David Wilson Homes. The launch also gave the school an opportunity to host a coffee morning for Macmillan Cancer Research, raising a total of

£659.41 for the charity organisation. For further information on Kempston Rural Lower School go to www.kempstonrural.beds. sch.uk

promising project, the Oxford to Cambridge Rail Line would link up the major towns and cities of Reading, Oxford, Aylesbury, Milton Keynes, Bedford and Cambridge. It is currently in its planning stage but is expected to be delivered by March 2019 when trains will begin to use the route. This new rail line is set to bring much growth and expansion in the Borough of Bedford. It would help forge important links across Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire and the rest of the UK. The route is planned to follow the current Marston Vale line as far as Bletchley, where a new railway would be built to carry the line to Claydon

East West Junction through the new station being built at Winslow. At Claydon Junction the existing freight only line that runs to Bicester will be updated to accommodate frequent passenger services. From there the route will join the existing line that runs to Oxford and Reading which will give connections to the West of England and South Wales. The funding for the delivery of this project is secured by the government with £500m allocated for it. Bedford Borough Council has stated that: “£2.6 million has been committed as a contribution to the project.” This would mean that local businesses and developers would help contribute to the project. With this new rail line across the country, Bedford is set to benefit

hugely. Potentially the project could create many jobs in the Borough. Furthermore, with the increased connections around the country it is projected that it would attract many more people to the county. With Heathrow, Birmingham and Oxford a little over than an hour away it would draw in much tourism to the area. However, there are fears that Milton Keynes will take the lion’s share of the benefits away from Bedford. Bedford Mayor Dave Hodgson states: “There is no particular reason why Bedford should gain any less from this project than Milton Keynes.” Richard Fuller. MP for Bedford and Kempston, believes that: “Milton Keynes will do everything it can to take as much advantage as it can

rail link but for once Bedford could be getting some of the action, and it will probably do better than it perhaps it has done over the years when competing against Milton Keynes.” With the arrival of the new railway there will need to be a number of infrastructure works carried out in and around Bedford. There could be congestion problems around Bedford with the large number of additional passengers being transported. Another issue is the location of Bedford station. It is proposed that the station would be relocated back to its previous position, 200 yards south of where it is at the moment. This would allow trains to come from the west of England and travel to the both the North and Midlands (once electrification has been

completed), with Bedford becoming a large travel hub. Mayor Hodgson said that: “Network Rail will be working on plans to upgrade Bedford station, and it is my intention that this upgrade will be accompanied by a wider regeneration project to upgrade the area and bring new jobs and improved facilities.” The Bedford to Cambridge extension of the line would require a new track to be built a much of the orginal track bed has been lost to development. In talks with Richard Fuller, he said: “There are three main proposals for this part of the scheme. The first is to take a similar route to that of the Varsity line through the area of Newnham and along by Willington and Blunham. A second option would be to go south and follow the route of the Bedford

bypass and the A421 to Cambridge. The final option would exit Bedford by the north and travel around Bedford to connect to Cambridge. Fuller believes that: “The central route following the former Varsity line would be too expensive to recreate. The Southern route would be more direct and cause less disruption, whereas the Northern route would bring much easier interchange with the lines to the Midlands.” Bedford Borough Council and local constituency MP will be in close contact with Network Rail and the East West Rail consortium to help deliver this project. In the interview with Richard Fuller, he is of the opinion that there is: “Widespread support from all the MPs along the route to make it happen.” Furthermore, he reassured that he is pressuring the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin, to give the prominence of the extension of the route as far as Felixstowe and Bristol. This infrastructure development promises great positive change for Bedford and the surrounding areas.

Christians also believe that human beings are made in the image and likeness of God and consequently, human life is sacred partly because it is ultimately a gift from God and partly because of that image of God within us, which is represented by our conscience, by our desire to do the right thing and by our wish to help others. The Boston element will take place over five days from October 27 and will involve presentations and teaching input from both Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Commissioner Martins said: “I feel very privileged to have been given this opportunity by the Local Government Leadership Centre and to learn from such highly-respected academics.

REMOVE BARRIERS

“This course is aimed at equipping leaders with the knowledge and practical expertise they need to deliver better public services for less money, including the important role technology can play in increasing efficiency. It will also help us to remove the barriers between different sectors and demonstrate how we can work together in the future to achieve better outcomes for the public. “The first phase of the course was highly relevant in terms of our financial position here in Bedfordshire. The insight I will gain through the remainder of the programme will be invaluable for future decision-making and I hope to return with a fresh understanding of what’s needed to enhance the way agencies and communities work jointly to reduce harm in Bedfordshire.” Bedfordshire Police is being transformed by how it is responding to the challenge of reducing finances. But it is clear that the cuts are going to continue into the next Parliament. So the next phase of this journey for the public sector will be about how much more efficient and effective different agencies can be by working together, pooling resources and how their duties are used to better serve the public. Countryside Champions recognised by CPRE

THE BEDFORDSHIRE branch of Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE Bedfordshire) has announced the winners of its sixth Living Countryside Awards. The Awards were presented by HM LordLieutenant of Bedfordshire, Helen Nellis at the distinctive Moggerhanger Park – a previous CPRE awards winner - on Tuesday 7th October. The Awards presentation showcased the great contributions made by people and projects to improve the county’s countryside and develop urban green spaces - and revealed some exciting new initiatives taking place across Bedfordshire. Bringing to wider recognition the individuals, community groups, businesses and landowners, that make special efforts to enhance Bedfordshire’s rich and diverse landscape. The awards reflect the enjoyment and environmental benefits brought to local communities through these inspiring projects that often go unnoticed. Commenting on the awards, CPRE Bedfordshire Chair, Gerry Sansom, said: “The entries into this year’s Living Countryside Awards demonstrate the number of inspiring projects underway which positively impact the evolving character of Bedfordshire’s countryside and urban areas. This is why we take such pride in running the award ceremony; to recognise and celebrate those who are making a difference today and for future generations”. Awards were given in three categories Building Design & Restoration, Biodiversity & Landscape Improvement and Sustainable Enterprise. A full list and description of CPRE Bedfordshire’s Living Countryside Awards Winners 2014 can be viewed on www.cprebeds.org.uk A total of 22 projects were recognised, with the top CPRE Mark awarded to seven projects. Now in its sixth year, this is the highest number of CPRE Marks given in one year to projects by the branch. This is excellent news for Bedfordshire, showing that there is great work being done. The top CPRE Mark winners are: Sustainable Enterprise – CPRE Mark to Golden Gardens in Goldington, Bedford - For the creation of two community gardens created

from disused garages owned by Pilgrim’s Housing Association, which have transformed a concrete wasteland into a valued asset for the local community. Sustainable Enterprise - CPRE Mark to Mrs Middleton Ltd, Lilley - for the development of a new quality food product of cold-pressed rapeseed oil, grown at wildlife-friendly Barton Hills Farm, featuring on each bottle a Made in Bedfordshire label and the field name and grid reference where the rapeseed was grown. Sustainable Enterprise – CPRE Mark to Chris Dodson, Master Thatcher for work on properties in north Bedfordshire - This fourth generation thatcher impressed the judges by his dedication to his craft, with a commitment to a high quality thatching service, including the use of authentic and traditional methods of straw harvesting and roof installation. Big rise in victims of hate crime reporting incidents

A SURGE in the number of hate crime victims who report incidents to the police was welcomed by Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner Olly Martins. Latest figures show a big increase in reports since May when the county-wide Hate Crime Strategy and Awareness campaign was launched. “It’s great news that many more victims are now getting the message and refusing to suffer in silence,” the Commissioner said. “It’s so important that people who find themselves abused in this way report incidents to the police. Nobody should put up with this

odious type of crime, and I am delighted that victims are becoming increasingly confident in reporting it. The police can - and do - prosecute those responsible, but first they need to know what’s happening.” Reporting in the five months ending in September has increased by around a third compared with the same period last year, and is already higher than for the whole year preceding Mr Martins’ election as Commissioner. Speaking during National Hate Crime Awareness Week, he went on: “No-one should think they have to put up with hate crime of any

description. Reporting it is not only about putting a stop to it, it’s about seeking and accepting support so that they can get on with their lives.” Hate crime and hate incidents include physical attacks to someone or their property, threats such as offensive letters or phone calls, verbal abuse such as in offensive posters and gestures, or bullying at school or work. Hate crimes are those motivated by prejudice, bigotry or intolerance on the grounds of disability, gender identity, race and ethnicity, religion or belief and sexual orientation.

Garden notes

IF YOU have not yet got round to doing it, this month is almost the perfect time to sow your winter onions, peas, garlic and broad beans. Shallots too if you have them. One proviso though, some varieties are recommended to be better set after Christmas than before. In a mild winter like last winter, it probably wouldn’t matter too much, but after the weather has turned nasty it is too late to change your mind. By now, most of us will have leaves to clear up even if we don’t have trees. It is a bit of a chore but if you have somewhere to store them in plastic bags they will make a useful mulch for the garden in a years time. The grass should not need cutting much more until spring, but will benefit from aerating with a fork stuck well in and wriggled about. If it is dry enough, give it a dressing of half and half sharp sand and old compost (or new if you are that keen), brushed in with a stiff broom. Add some autumn and winter feed to promote root growth and by next year you should have a healthy lawn to cut. It is a good time now to tidy up shrubs and herbaceous plants, thinning where needed and dividing or moving while the ground is still

warm. Botanically speaking. Roses and other woody shrubs can be pruned now. Once you have weeded, if you have got a supply of well rotted compost, a mulch of it on beds or dug ground will help to suppress germinating weeds, and with the help of the worms, feed your soil. Having just come back from warm and floriferous Madeira, I visited a cold and decidedly damp allotment to discover what was happening there. The runner beans had come to an end as had the courgettes. The raspberries and blackberries had also stopped fruiting so head of catering can at last put away the maslin pan and wooden spoons for another season. The freezer is well stocked with crumbles and fruit pies so Sunday lunches will be complete for the next few months. At the ripe old age of quite a bit, I have to admit to having become a bit of a fair weather gardener, so over the next few weeks I anticipate having plenty of time to peruse the catalogues and magazines to decide what I am going to try to grow next year. Other than older that is. Richard Callaghan

Shuttleworth Veteran Aeroplane Society receives Queen’s Award

THE prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2014 was presented by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Helen Nellis to the Working Volunteer members of the Shuttleworth Veteran Aeroplane Society (SVAS the friends of the Collection) at the Old Warden aerodrome on Thursday 25 September.

The Shuttleworth Veteran Aeroplane Society were among five groups selected for the award from over 300 nominated by members of the public. The award is given to those who made a difference to the lives of others, or whose work has benefited their community. The SVAS’ objectives are to educate the public in the science, practice and history of aviation and motoring by supporting the charitable work of the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden. Collection Trust Chairman Edmund Wood said: “The Collection is an independent unsubsidised trust and operates a world leading collection of vintage and veteran aeroplanes, auto-

mobiles motorcycles and bicycles which are maintained in working condition and regularly displayed to the public. Without the support of the working volunteers, who contribute in excess of 25000 hours a year, it would probably be impossible to maintain our status as a living working collection and community educational establishment.” This unique UK national honour, the highest for groups of volunteers, was created over a decade ago by Her Majesty The Queen to recognise the outstanding contributions that volunteers make to their local communities. It has an equivalent status for voluntary groups as the MBE has for individuals.

Meet Toto!

ON Saturday 4th October, dogs from all over Bedfordshire came to try their paw at winning the part of Toto for BATS’ Wizard of Oz musical. There was a great turn out for the doggy auditions and fun categories and despite the very ‘British’ weather much fun was had by all. After demonstrating some fantastic skills of obedience and tricks amongst stiff competition, the part of Toto was awarded to the wonderful Robbie, seen here with Hattie Farnsworth who will be playing Dorothy in the show. Robbie’s owner, Megan Molloy of Flitwick, Beds said: “I am over the moon for Robbie to have won the part of Toto. He is such a loving dog and when we rescued him 20 months ago I never imagined how amazing he was going to be.” Co-directors Adela Kerr and Katy Gardiner commented: “Robbie will be a fantastic addition to the show, the audiences will adore him. Local retailer wins two top awards

THE Michael R Peters Group won two major awards last week from ERT Magazine which represents the Electrical Retailing Industry. The presentation lunch which is sponsored by all the major manufacturers in Electrical Retailing was held at the Connaught Rooms in Covent Garden, London. The first award was presented to Michael R. Peters Group after the

company was voted “Euronics Retailer of the Year 2014.” Euronics is the largest buying group in Europe for the Electrical Retailing Industry and has some 650 members in the UK. To come out on top is a great achievement and a credit to all the staff of the Michael R. Peters Group in Bedford. The second award was made specifically to Managing Director, Paul Mead and he received the ERT Magazine “Special Achievement Award” for services to the Electrical Retailing Industry. Paul has worked in the industry for thirty-one years after joining the Michael R. Peters Group from school in 1983. He carried out a variety of roles within the company and in 2007, after the death of Mike Peters, Paul took up the reins as Managing Director. Mike Peters was very well known in the industry and was a great supporter of the independent electrical retailer so Paul had big act to follow. He has been very successful in keeping the company at the forefront of Electrical Retailing in Bedford and has also become involved with other organisations which promote and give support to independent retailers in much the same way as Mike Peters.

Paul’s stated in reaction to the awards, “I am immensely proud to have been given these awards and will strive to ensure that the Michael R. Peters Group stays in the forefront

Business Head for hair business!

PREPARING people for careers in the multi-billion pound hair and beauty business is the mission of new Bedford College Assistant Director Kerry Attfield. “We should not underestimate the contribution that hair and beauty makes to the local economy and national wealth creation. Fashions and products developed here in the UK are followed world-wide. Any one of our students could be next Paul Mitchell, or Estee Lauder,” says Kerry. Kerry trained in hair and beauty, bought her own freehold salon property, employed apprentices and remained passionate about professional standards. She became a lecturer rising to Head of Hair & Media Make-up at Cambridge Regional College before making the move to Bedford. Bedford College has invested in its own High Street training salon

Public servants ride for charity LOCAL public servants (heath & education), Dr Andrew Gray, Holly Barnard, Nic Ocean and Ben and Alix Waine have recently handed in the final monies raised by their circa 100km cycle ride from Bedford to Cambridge (and back!) for the Beds & Herts Historic Churches Trust on Saturday 13 September 2014. Combining cash and internet sponsorship, the team raised over £770 pounds to support the work of local churches (which in turn support much other charitable activity). Fifty per

cent of the monies will be spent on churches in Bedford and surrounding villages and the other half will support churches in need of care elsewhere in Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire. Dr Gray was unable to join the cyclists on the day (due to unanticipated illness) but had been instrumental in planning the event. The participants would like to thank their sponsors for all their support. The next Beds & Herts Historic Churches Trust cycle ride will be in September 2015.

We need employers to take on apprentices and in turn we at Bedford College need to listen to what those salon owners want from these young people,” added Kerry.

Bunyan Boat carries 5,000th passenger

MRS. Cheryl Morris of Bromham was the lucky winner of a bottle of ‘bubbly’ for becoming the 5,000th passenger to board John Bunyan, Bedford’s Community Boat this year. Graham Mabbutt, Chairman of the B&MK Waterway Trust said: “We are delighted to have carried so many passengers this cruising season. Many of our cruises have been fully booked, but we still have some seats available for our Thursday and weekend cruises in October. We are now taking group bookings for the spring of 2015.” The passenger boat, which is owned by the Bedford & Milton Keynes Waterway Trust and run by volunteers carries passengers on public cruises on Thursdays and weekends between April and the end of October. On other days and evenings the boat is available for charter hire for local groups, organisations and businesses at: www.b-mkwaterway.org.uk

New community transport will provide help

BEDFORDSHIRE Rural Communities Charity (BRCC) is providing new transport facilities in Bedford Borough to help over 65s and those with a disability to travel and meet social, recreational or other engagements. ‘Wheels in Motion’ was launched at Riseley Village Hall on 2nd October 2014 and will complement the existing Door to Door provision within the borough. Stressing the importance of rural transport to Bedford Borough, Councillor Charles Royden congratulated all those that have been working to bring the Wheels in Motion project into fruition following a Big Lottery funding award of £400,000 over a five year period. Jon Boswell, BRCC Chief Executive, speaking to the audience of potential customers, transport service providers, parish and borough councillors and village agents explained how the provision will address issues those in rural communities face in not being able to use existing transport services, with this often leading to isolation. Jon thanked those members of the public that have already signed up to volunteer with Wheels in Motion, “the role of

LOCKSMITH volunteers for the future of rural transport solutions will be key” he explained. In addition to welcoming volunteer drivers, and administrative help, a user group is to be set up to continue to establish local needs for the future. Two services will make up the Wheels in Motion provision - a community car service which will use volunteers driving their own cars to provide lifts to people, and a service using paid drivers and adapted accessible vehicles. Together these will introduce a more viable option to rural areas than the continuing Door to Door service which is also run by BRCC and funded by Bedford Borough.

The key factor for Wheels in Motion passengers, is that they will not be required to forfeit their bus passes to use the service. Adapted vehicles, available for viewing at the launch, attracted interest and approval from those present. Mrs S Hargreaves, a local resident who struggles with organising transport suitable for her husband said that hearing about the service had “made her day”. She is only too aware that “it is the ease of use, not just the cost that is critical”. For further information and to join the Wheels to Work scheme please call Amy Baker on 01234 345558

Karaoke – my part in its popularity by Ken Broughton KARAOKE is now a worldwide form of entertainment, originating from Japan around 1980. Karaoke is a word formed from joining together two Japanese words namely Kara which comes from Karapoo and means empty, and oke shortened from Okesutura meaning orchestra and so Karaoke means empty orchestra. Karaoke. How I just love that word. The Japanese Prime Minister has apologised for his country’s part in World War 2. He hasn’t however mentioned Karaoke! I first sang at Karaoke in the Royal Oak, Kempston one Saturday evening in 1997 when our eldest daughter Tracey got me up to sing under the false pretence that we sing a duet together. The chosen song was Elvis Presley’s ‘Stuck on You’ and just as we were about to sing she walked away leaving me on my own to sing in front of a crowded pub, many of whom were friends including my wife Val and our son Neil, who was there with some of his mates. I got a good response and that was it, I was hooked and there was no stopping me. Tracey’s ex partner John (Barney) Hutchins has often since told me that Tracey has a lot to answer for, a sentiment that my very good friend Mr John Breen would no doubt enthusiastically endorse.

■ ■ ■

There are three kinds of Karaoke singers. Those who think they can sing but can’t, those who know they can’t sing but get up and have a go anyway and then there is me! Karaoke is meant to be fun and not to be taken seriously and for most of us it is but one guy I know used to get really annoyed when people talked whilst he was singing and on one occasion he had a right go at me and my mates, Tony Robinson and Frank Odell accusing us as he put it: “Talking loudly on purpose to drown out my singing voice, because you all know I’m a better singer than Ken.” He also used to complain about his mate, who ran his own Karaoke for several years, of standing behind him when he was singing at his own Karaoke and joining in but never could sing in the proper key, thereby putting him off and also giving him an inferior mic to sing into. He found this very annoying and although they are still very good friends, he said he was an utter pest who ruined many a Karaoke night for him, as did Ken Broughton and his mates when talking loudly “Just to put me off.” Here are just a few light hearted quips, oneliners and insults: You have never been a very good singer John Breen to Ken Broughton You have never been a good footballer ken Broughton to John Breen I do not like Karaoke - Barry Gascoigne

Neither do I – John Breen I do – Ken Broughton “The secret of my success as a Karaoke singer is to ensure that I always open my mouth before I begin to sing,” quote from Jeff Harris… yes Jeff it does help! Someone once told me that I have a modest reputation as a Karaoke singer to which I replied that my modesty knows no bounds. When told this John Breen said: “He has everything to be modest about especially his singing, which is very modest indeed.” A Karaoke singer from Bedford who shall remain nameless once told my mate, Dave Lewis and me many years ago, and I quote: “I like to cuddle the mic, that I’m holding when I’m singing at a Karaoke. I like to pretend it’s a woman I’m making love to and so it becomes a part of me. In that way I can get more passion and feeling into my voice with a song I am singing because I am a very very passionate singer.”

■ ■ ■

Dave Lewis said to me afterwards: “This just goes to show what a prat he is!” Dave, who has since retired from singing at Karaoke, used to like to project the image of a singer of sad songs and when he sang everyone in the pub used to feel real sad. He used to say: “I’m at my happiest when singing sad songs.” “When she sings she sounds like a cat being strangled. Thinking about it, a cat being strangled sounds better.” Dave Lewis talking about a female Karaoke singer. “People who have heard Ken Broughton sing, say that he doesn’t.” John Breen talking to his mate. Barry Gascoigne reckons that Karaoke is alright in it’s place, as long as its in a place he isn’t. “When Ken Broughton finally packs up singing at Karaoke, I’m going out to get drunk.” John Breen. “I’m not so think as you drunk I am.” Quote fro John Breen after celebrating Ken’s retirement from Karaoke singing. “Karoke? What’s that? Ken Broughton. The following is an appreciation of some of my Karaoke friends. Jeff Harris – Jeff comes from Marston Morteyne but has lived in Kempston for many years. I first met Jeff at Karaoke in The Royal Oak and he was a real inspiration for me and in June of this year one of his daughters took him with her to Memphis Tennessee, a 50th birthday treat. They visited Graceland and The Sun Studios where Elvis made all his very early recordings. X marks the spot in the studio where Elvis stood with the actual mic that he used. Jeff had his photo taken actually holding it. On the Tuesday evening June 10th he went with his daughter to a Karaoke bar on Beale Street in downtown Memphis, the so called home of the Blues. Jeff sang, ‘If I Can Dream’ ‘American Trilogy’ ‘Suspicious Minds and ‘I Just Can’t Help Believing’ in a tribute to Memphis’

favourite son… and left the building to great applause. The following night at a different venue he sang the hit Stereophonics record ‘Dakota’. No one had ever heard that song before and afterwards a guy told him: “I ain’t never heard that song before Buddy but you sure sang it real good. Man it was something else.” We have often heard him sing it and so knew just what the guy meant. Jeff’s version is better than the original. Mac McKeaveney – Mac for many years ran his own Karaoke along with his wife Shirley at The Royal Oak and he is an excellent singer. Equally at home singing hard rock such as Ozzy Osbournes ‘Paranoid’ AC/DCs ‘Whole Lotta Rosie’ as he is performing ‘What a Wonderful World’ in the Louis Armstrong style and unbelievably songs such as ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’ and ‘My Boy Lollipop’ a big hit for a young West Indian girl singer, Millie in the mid 1960s. Vic Aldous – He is one of the very best, if not the best on the local Karaoke circuit with a terrific vocal range whether singing rock ‘n’ roll or ballads. Philbert Patterson – Phil comes from Jamaica and is a brilliant soul singer who also does a great version of The Rolling Stones ‘Sympathy for the Devil.’ I once told Phil that he was by far too good to be singing at Karaoke and so he has now branched out into singing on the club scene, at venues as far afield as Newmarket in Cambridgeshire. Korrine Van Royen and Joe Montez Korrine and her partner Joe both have a wide range of songs from which to choose and perform with equal success. Korrine is an exceptionally good singer. Clark Young – Just what can I say about Clarky as he is popularly known? He sings a song like nobody I know. He is so out of tune and key that it’s almost as if he is challenging you to name that tune, because if you never saw the words on the screen you would quite simply have no idea of the song he was singing, if that is what you could call it. I would just love to see him on TV performing in front of Simon Cowell, but for all that Clarky is a great guy and well liked by all who know him. I’ll say no more.

■ ■ ■

As a lot of people who live locally know by now, on Tuesday September 16th I unfortunately had to have an amputation on my left leg just above the knee, but I am in good spirits at home with my loving wife Val and my family, along with my many friends offering their support. So I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all the lovely cards I have received along with messages of comfort. I am determined to become active once again and continue to enjoy my life to the full. I just know I can do it and I will! Thank you everybody Until the next time…

Success at world championships

KIDS from Bedfordshire based street dance school, Dancevybz, achieved world class status recently at the 2014 World Hip Hop Championships. Three crews and five individuals aged between nine and 21 from across the county represented England in team and individual disciplines at the event in Bochum, Germany. Execute, a team of 20 dancers, beat off 30 other teams to take third place on the podium in the Adult Formation category, reinforcing their status as England’s number one Hip Hop dance team. The win tops a phenomenal year for Dancevybz, and particularly for Execute choreographer and coach Ed Jones, who also reached the live semi-finals Britain’s Got Talent earlier this year as part of dance crew Cartel. DVK, a crew of five boys and girls all under the age of 12, were attending their first ever world championships and became the highest ranking English performers in the Children’s Formation category, coming tenth out of 23. Jack Skoines of DVK said: “Competing in the World Championships is the best experience of my life. We danced the hardest we’ve ever danced and I’m really proud of our performance. It was so exciting and I will be working really hard to make sure we qualify again next year.”

Vortex, a crew of young male and female performers under 16, achieved 17th place out of 43 in the Junior Formation category. Individual performances included Sarah Meo Massey and Joe Tebbutt in Adult Hip Hop Duos, Dan Tebbut in Junior Electric Boogie Solos, and Kelise Bruney and Tristan Knott in Children’s Electric Boogie Duos. Stephanie Massey, founder of Dancevybz, said of the school’s success: “Wow, what a weekend! I’m so proud of all my dancers, everyone gave their all and it shows in the results. Dancevybz

has truly put Bedfordshire on the world street dance map. Perhaps more importantly though the competition has given some of our youngest dancers a phenomenal opportunity to perform on a world stage, meet other dancers from across the globe and increase their confidence”. Dancevybz teams have performed all over the world, previously ranking sixth in the Hip Hop world championships in Las Vegas, while squad Kazzum this year won the UK Hip Hop Championships and reached the live finals of Sky One’s ‘Got to Dance’ in 2012.

The Imitation Game Benedict Cumberbatch • Keira Knightley • Matthew Goode IN CINEMAS: 14 November Benedict Cumberbatch portrays Alan Turing in this bittersweet World War II code breaking drama. The historical biopic follows Turing’s efforts – as leader of a group of young mathematicians – to crack the Enigma code, used by the German war machine to issue orders to its forces, but it’s the heart-breaking personal cost endured by the troubled mathematical genius that forms an unpleasant subtext. Despite his work at Bletchley Park having been credited with shortening the war by at least a couple of years, Turing was later sentenced to chemical castration for engaging in a homosexual relationship, leading to his eventual suicide in 1954. So while it’s great that the film celebrates Turing’s invaluable work during WWII, it’s also shocking that anyone – not least a war hero – could be subjected to such bigotry in the post-war years. Sadly, Turing could never talk about his work at Bletchley, as it was subject to the Official Secrets Act, and his codebreaking efforts only came to light many years after his death. Cumberbatch is already being tipped for an Oscar for his performance as the code-breaking genius, while he’s ably supported by an ensemble cast that includes Mark Strong, Keira Knightley and Matthew Goode. ★★★★★

What We Do In The Shadows Jemaine Clement • Taika Waititi • Jonathan Brugh IN CINEMAS: 21 November This hilarious mockumentary follows the adventures of a group of idiotic vampires who live in a suburban flatshare, and bicker among themselves about whose turn it is to do the dishes. The reality TV-style format invites us into their home to witness their pathetically mundane lives, as they get ready for a night out, but can’t check out how they look in the mirror as they lack a reflection. Co-starring Jemaine Clement of Flight Of The Conchords fame, it would have been easy for the film to fall into a cheesy Addams Familystyle tribute, but that’s carefully avoided here, and there are plenty of laughs to be had from the cultural differences between the amiable bloodsuckers and the outside world. ★★★★✩

Timothy Spall is on top form as eccentric British painter J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) in Mike Leigh’s film about the inspirational artist. Picking up the award for Best Actor at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Spall portrays Turner as an inarticulate and bumbling figure with an appalling lack of social graces, but also someone who went to great lengths for his art – even going so far as strapping himself to the mast of a ship to experience a storm at sea. One of Marvel Comics’ best kept secrets, the Guardians Of The Galaxy might not have the immediate cinematic appeal of Spider-Man or Iron Man, but thanks to some savvy marketing, a cracking script and a brilliant ensemble cast, the movie turned out to be the surprise hit of the summer. It’s about as slender a plot device as you’d find in a comic book – which we guess is the point – and it’s all just an excuse for our gang of thieving ne’er-do-wells to go on a series of wild adventures. Some of the overly ambitious action sequences do fall a little flat, though, but such missteps are rare in a film that plays out like a drunken Saturday morning cartoon show from the 1980s.★★★★✩

A viral apocalypse has killed off most of the human race, with survivors banding together in destroyed cities, while a growing ape community goes from strength to strength. The spark for conflict is provided by none other than Gary Oldman, taking on the role of Drefus, a human leader who blames the apes for the death of his family. New director Matt Reeves certainly delivers an action-packed sequel to the 2011 reboot, but it’s difficult to tell which side you’ll be cheering for by the end of the film. ★★★★✩

has pulled no punches with his latest game, as players take control of a detective investigating multiple homicides at a mental hospital just as the world goes to hell. Your unfit copper – who can’t run very far without gasping for breath – confronts all sorts of genre staples, including a chainsaw wielding madman, demonic dogs and a chap with a safe for a head, who we can only assume is a doff of a hat to Pyramid Head from the Silent Hill series. The mix of third-person gunplay and stealth mechanics is well done, although the game relies a bit too heavily on well-worn horror tropes for its scares. ★★★✩✩

BOOKS The Churchill Factor: How One Man Made History Bayonetta 2 No One Is Lost by Stars ON SALE: Now Canadian indie pop stalwarts Stars are back with their seventh studio album, combining a more dance-oriented sound with lyrics that dwell on the harsher realities of life. It might be the end of the world as we know it, but the five-piece band from Montreal won’t go down without a fight, or a smile on their faces, while the see-saw vocals of Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan are as lush, crisp and ethereal as they’ve ever been. Standouts include the choral melody that weaves its way through ‘Trap Door’, while disco-tinged opener ‘From The Night’ and the anthemic title track will have you on your feet and heading for the dance floor. ★★★★★

Let’s Get Metaphysical by Carnivores ON SALE: Now Having built up a loyal following through lots of hard gigging and sporadic single releases, alt rockers Carnivores have finally gotten around to releasing their debut album. Let’s Get Metaphysical is a thrilling, tumultuous wall of sound that starts with a bang and builds steadily to a thunderous roar, underpinned by some surprising melodies, good old-fashioned chants, fragile harmonies and even playful brass sections. The Paisley ‘newcomers’ even find time for a spot of hard-hitting social commentary with the politically charged ‘John Maynard Keynes’, but it’s the ear-splitting sound of ‘Insecuricor’ that really sets the album alight. ★★★★✩

Once again, the titular Umbra Witch becomes embroiled in an apocalyptic punch-up between the forces of Heaven and Hell, obliterating all-comers with a riotous array of kicks, punches, dodges, twirls, jumps, slashes and poses. Whether battling angels on top of a fighter-jet, slaying a dragon while perched precariously on the side of a skyscraper, or fighting your way through the bowels of a gigantic demon, the game unfolds at a frantic pace. There’s also an allnew two-player online co-op mode where you and a friend can team up and play through various scenes from the main campaign, placing bets on who will bag the most points. ★★★★✩

Disney Magical World Format: 3DS ON SALE: Now Whether you’re dancing at a ball thrown by Cinderella, helping Winnie the Pooh find honey, or learning to fish with Donald Duck, you certainly won’t be stuck for things to do in this charming Magic Kingdom-inspired life simulator. Once Mickey Mouse has invited you to visit the fanciful world of Castleton, a wide range of activities opens up, including designing your own clothes and furniture, indulging in some light dungeon crawling, crafting magical items, and collecting trading cards. Most of these are unlocked by collecting Happy Stickers as you play, and you’ll soon gain access to other Disneythemed worlds based on Cinderella, 100 Acre Wood, Alice In Wonderland and Aladdin. ★★★✩✩

The Evil Within Format: Xbox One (also on PS4, PC, PS3, Xbox 360) ON SALE: Now The creator of Resident Evil, Shinji Mikami,

by Boris Johnson ON SALE: Now When he’s not bossing London as the city’s elected mayor, or making a fool of himself in another carefully orchestrated publicity stunt, Boris Johnson fancies himself as a bit of a writer. As a former editor of The Spectator and a regular columnist for The Daily Telegraph, it seems like he’s rather good at it too, so now he’s written an illuminating portrait of Winston Churchill. Marking the 50th anniversary of Churchill’s death, Johnson explores the singular brilliance of Britain’s greatest wartime leader, and a man of pivotal importance to the history of the 20th century. The Churchill Factor is an engrossing read, too, not least for busting some myths about the hard-drinking aristocrat who had to be ordered by the King to stay out of action on D-Day. It’s probably the best thing Johnson has ever written and is a page-turner from start to finish. ★★★★★

Banish those winter blues – laugh! THE CLOCKS have gone back , the nights are drawing in and the temperature will be distinctly chilly. Fear not, Castle Comedy is ready to banish the winter blues and warm you up with a night of feel good comedy! The date for your diary is Thursday the 13th November; the venue is as always the Gordon Arms Ent Shed! Headlining the show is comedy veteran, Silky. Liverpudlian-in-exile Silky has been a full time comedian for half his life. In that time he has performed all over the world; appeared on numerous TV shows including Paramount’s ‘The World Stands Up’ and has his own successful comedy club chain. Another claim to fame is that he has been the warm up man for BBC1’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’… that’s ‘Brucie’ bonus if ever there was! In his own words he does ‘Jokes and Songs’… what everyone one else says is he is just about the best in the business! Below is just some of the long list of praise he has “One of the best Set Lists I saw the whole of last year. Absolutely brilliant. Great improviser, wonderful stand-up, beautiful singer” Fred MacAulay, BBC Radio Scotland “far better guitar playing than is required for a comedy show” – Stewart Lee “Skilful and entertaining … Silky’s audience banter is sans pareil” - Time Out “a very, very funny fella … just brilliant” – John Bishop Also on the bill are Simon Fielder (below)

and Sy Thomas who are the stars of the cult internet show ‘Life of Si’. They are performing individually this show as they are both hugely talented stand ups. Simon is a former weather presenter for the Big Breakfast who has reached the final of numerous comedy competitions, in his own words “always the bridesmaid”. He is charm personified and an incredibly likeable comic. “Compelling to watch... Unashamedly feelgood.” – Chortle Sy Thomas started off as a children’s television presenter for Nickelodeon before presenting two series of CITV’s much loved gadgets and games show ‘The Cool Stuff Collective’. As a comic he has supported the majestic Marcel Lucont on his UK tour as well as taking his own show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year, where he gained a five star review from Three Weeks. Your Mc for the evening is Castle Comedy regular and the Bath Comedy Festival New Act of the Year, Paul Revill. The shows sell out quickly so be sure to book early to avoid disappointment! Doors open 7.30pm, Show starts at 8.15pm and tickets are £8 (£5 NUS) or £15 which includes a pre show meal and glass of wine at the Gordon Arms. To book call 07736 060541, Email castlecomedy@ hotmail.co.uk or online at www.castlecomedy.co.uk Castle Comedy – Bringing Comedy Royalty to Bedford.
