CROSS-PARTY TEAM TO BOOST FRONTLINE POLICING IN COUNTY

Bedfordshire’s new PCC Kathryn holloway signed her oath of impartiality on Monday May 16 as she brought in a start-up team to help her boost frontline police from across politics in the county.

At the Force’s Kempston HQ, accompanied by Assistant Chief Constable Mike Colbourne, Kathryn pledged to “serve all the people of Bedfordshire in the office of Police and Crime Commissioner,” and to “act with integrity and diligence in my role.”

Afterwards she said: “Being a Commissioner for all and demonstrating impartiality from the very outset is hugely important to me. All that matters is getting the best people, with the necessary skills, to help me support the Chief Constable to provide the best possible policing in Bedfordshire. I hope it reassures the public that I am bringing in a team which promises to deliver precisely this irrespective of their past political allegiances.” Kathryn’s first project as Commissioner, as promised in her election manifesto, is Project Boost the Frontline. The project aims to release as many of Bedfordshire’s existing police as possible from desk duties and provide support back into full

service for those on restricted duties, together with provision to help boost the morale of frontline officers. Delivering the project, will be two short-term interim specialists on 100-day maximum contracts – John Guthrie, a highly experienced HR and Recruitment advisor who once stood as Mayor of Bedford for the Conservatives, and Simon Bullock, a former Deputy Chief of Staff within the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner under the former Labour PCC, who has spent the interim assessing Police and Crime Commissioners and best practice among the 43 police forces of England and Wales for the organisation CoPacc which compares PCCs.

FIELD TO FORK

VOTE LEAVE AND TAKE BACK CONTROL

I WILL be voting to leave the EU in the forthcoming referendum. There have been many arguments and counter arguments flying around and I could not blame anyone for being confused with regard to which way to vote. My decision is rooted in accountability and democracy and in my fundamental belief that outside of the EU, Britain can once again become one of the most prosperous nations in the world. When thinking about the money, be aware we give £350 million EACH WEEK to the EU. Yes, we get a rebate back of £110 million. This is the rebate Maggie fought for. Then Blair gave most of it away. It's much smaller now but we do still have one. However, it's about to get even smaller. The EU federalists are desperate to for Turkey to become a member state. That’s another 75 million people instantly eligible to live and work in the UK. Not only that, accession of Turkey to the EU will require immense spending on their infrastructure and institutions. Where do we think that money would come from? In large part it will be taken from our rebate. We would have to pay more in than the £350 million PER WEEK in and get less than the £110 million back. EU development funds would struggle to cope with the challenge posed by Turkey so soon after they have had to pay for upgrading Bulgaria and Romania. We will be called on to foot the bill. And of course, the children of Turkish men or women who come to work in the UK will be entitled to claim child benefit payments for children who will never have left Turkey. Next month we all get a vote. I hope as many of my constituents and their family and friends across the country will Vote Leave to take back control of our country and our money, so that we can re direct it some of it straight back into our NHS.

RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES

FROM my home I look out onto Howard House, the former residence of John Howard the eighteenth century High Sheriff of Bedfordshire and prison reformer; a man, who through insights from his extensive visits to prisons, brought reform to the penal system. It is a vision of a more humane prison system that has inspired people down the ages, not least the work of the eponymous Howard League for Penal Reform. Yet despite this campaigning work, and the conscientious efforts of many, prisons continue to struggle to address the problems with which many arrive in prison, including addiction to drugs and alcohol, low educational attainment, and limited skills. In recent years the reoffending rate has stayed pretty constant. It is disturbing to read in the 2015 Bromley Briefing (which marshalls prison statistics) that ‘levels of purposeful activity were judged unacceptable in three-quarters of prisons inspected’. In contrast where there is quality training and links with employers, such as Timpsons or the National Grid, the impact is noticeable and re-offending drops sharply. Today, as I write this, the Queen’s Speech announced a Prison and Reform Bill which promises new ‘Reform’ prisons with an emphasis on ‘training, rehabilitation and education’, as well as greater transparency on statistics of reoffending and post-release employment. This is a welcome vision, but there will need to be the resources to enable its delivery. In the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 4, Jesus reads in his local synagogue from the prophet Isaiah: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour. Sometimes called the ‘Jesus manifesto, they are words of liberation. Among those listed are ‘captives’ and whilst this is not a call to mass escape from our prisons, it is a summons to ensure that our justice system is not just about punishment, but also rehabilitation and restoration. It is that ‘release’ that enables the offender to resume their place in society with hope and possibility. The very vision that my historic neighbour championed all those years ago!

ONE of London’s most acclaimed new chefs has been cooking for a select few in a Bedfordshire village. Bruno Loubet, from the Grain Store restaurant in London, held a ‘pop-up restaurant’ at a farm shop in Broom near Biggleswade on Saturday 14th May. This intimate event gave a ‘field to fork’ experience, highlighting the home produced rare breed pork and Dexter beef, of local livestock farmer and Farm Shop owner Philip Jellis. Bruno lives in Bedfordshire and is an admirer of the farming methods of Philip, who not only rears his own livestock but butchers them himself and sells the meat directly at his farm shop. One of the guests included Pierre Koffmann from the Berkeley hotel in London who met some of the animals on the farm before enjoying a four course seasonal feast cooked by Bruno.

The aim of the event was to highlight the importance of food provenance, sustainability and shopping locally. Philip Jellis, owner of Parkside farm and farm shop, said: “Meat is all about taste, which means how they are cared for and how the meat is butchered, which I do myself. It is also all about provenance. We own and rear our own cattle, of which we have 15, and pigs and sheep. They are all either on this site or in fields in the area and nothing is taken away or added. It is first class meat, reared and butchered locally. This means our meat tastes as it should.” Bruno, who is known for innovative ways of cooking vegetables at the Grain Store, said: “It is important that food is properly sourced and I am looking forward to cooking this meal for Philip’s guests!”

Thanks to Poplars!

Take life or work in a new direction

“I JUST want to thank you guys, you may well have saved my life!” These were the words of a visitor to Poplars Garden Centre last month who had discovered that he had dangerously high blood pressure, though he had previously knew nothing about it. He was speaking to members of The Rotary Club of Flitwick Vale who each year, offer free blood pressure checks in conjunction with Stroke Awareness. Twelve months ago, this fit young man was told to urgently visit his doctor as his blood pressure put him at a high risk of a stroke.m He is now on routine medication, his blood pressure is in a safe range and his young fam-

ily can look forward to having dad with them for many years to come. It is for reasons like this that Rotarians give up their day to host this annual event and encourage visitors to Poplars to have a check. Two fully qualified nurses also volunteer to carry out these free checks and assess peoples’ degree of risk and in most years, two or three people end up with a recommendation for an urgent visit to their doctor. At the other end of the scale of course, there are the happy smiles of those who have had confirmation that all is well and their risk of a stroke is low. Everybody comes out a winner!

Flitwick Scouts take to the water

SCOUTS, Young Leaders and adult volunteers from Flitwick Scout Group took to the water when they canoed from Kempston to Great Barford along the River Ouse. This was a first for many of the Scouts, and they are said to have had a fantastic experience. Before setting out on the water everyone was given a safety briefing by the Kempston Outdoor Activity Centre instructors. They also demonstrated the best and easiest way to paddle and steer the canoe and what to do if the canoe ‘turned over.’ Within a few minutes of being in their canoe, everyone gained confidence in how to paddle. Some of the participants were surprised that at various parts of the river they had to take their canoe out of the water to avoid a lock or weir. After a six and a half hour ‘paddle’ they arrived at their destination of Great Barford and set about putting up tents and preparing their evening meal. The evening was spent sharing experiences of the day and what they had gained from being involved in Scouts. All of the Scouts (boys and girls aged 10½ to 14) will have completed some of their Time on the Water, Adventure Challenge, Nights Away and Outdoor Challenge badges. The Young leaders (boys and girls aged 14 to 18) gained some great knowledge and developed their skills around helping other people and giving them some tips about how to steer their canoe. Young people joining the Group, which caters for boys and girls aged 6 to 14, will get the opportunity to earn badges and take part in activities, some for the first time. These activities range

from learning about healthy eating and creating their own sandwich, dessert and drink, local knowledge, science experiments, hiking, cooking and learning new skills. George Cole who went on the ‘Ouse Cruise’ said: “It was great getting into the canoe again. I have several opportunities to take part in paddle sports and other water activities. It’s always great fun and I can’t wait to do it again.” Adult volunteer Ben Peet said: “It’s amazing what Scouting does for young people. At the start of the ‘Ouse Cruise’ some of the Scouts were a little anxious about how they would steer their canoe but by the time they got to Great Barford they were full of confidence. The Young Leaders also gained invaluable skills by demonstrating to some of the Scouts the best way to paddle.” Lead volunteer for the Group, Jonathan Smith said: “In the

With the popularity of crafting on the increase, a visit to Fibre-East is guaranteed to leave you inspired! Many of the stallholders not only demonstrate throughout the weekend, but also are also more than happy to answer any questions. It’s a fun and friendly event that the whole family can enjoy. Local spinning and weaving guilds will be in attendance at Fibre-East again this year. Experienced crafters will be more than happy to demonstrate their

skills and let you try out a new craft. The Bedfordshire Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers and the Guild of Long Draw Spinners will be demonstrating how many spinners it takes to ‘feed’ a weaver. You may be invited to help them prepare fibre ready for spinning. Alongside our popular and informative sheep shearing demonstrations, this year we are very lucky to have demonstrations of medieval crafts from the Society of Creative Anachronism – Insulae Draconis and their volunteers will also be in period costume. Not only will they be demonstrating various crafts, they would welcome the opportunity to let visitors try a whole variety of traditional crafts. You will find their website here www.insulaedraconis.org. There is wheelchair friendly access and plenty of free parking. Professional caterers in a large marquee will be delivering onsite catering and the Devon Cream Tea is fabulous! Hot and cold food will be served throughout the weekend. Flitwick man convicted of theft Camping out for nature

A FLITWICK man who has admitted stealing £19,000 from a pension company has been given time to pay the money back. Jason Adkins, 44, of Mendip Close, appeared at Luton Crown Court last month to be sentenced for theft and false accounting. His lawyer James McCrindle asked for the sentence to be deferred so that Adkins can pay

the money back. He said: “He is due to be the beneficiary of his late father’s estate. There are delays with probate involving the sale of property in this country and Spain.” Mr McCrindle said: “If he pays back the £19,000 that was stolen, then the loser would be properly compensated. It is something he wants to do.”

Prosecutor Daniel Siong said the losers, Mercers Limited, were also seeking their legal fees of £9,102. Judge Philip Bartle QC agreed to the defence request and deferred sentencing until Friday 7 October. He told Adkins: “If you pay the money back, that will be taken into account at sentencing. It lies in your hands.”

Families affected by cancer could face financial hardship

AROUND 3,000 people in Bedfordshire are diagnosed with cancer every year, which according to new analysis released today by Macmillan Cancer Support, could force them and their families to find hundreds of pounds a month to cover the costs of the disease. Macmillan calculates that the average family in England is left with around £375 each month after paying for necessities such as bills, food and everyday travel. But previous research by the charity shows that cancer has an average monthly cost of £570 for the vast majority (83%) of English cancer patients. Working parents with young children are hit hardest by the financial cost of cancer. The charity warns that an adult being diagnosed with cancer could therefore leave the average English family with a potential shortfall of around £200 a month even if they were to cut out all leisure activities and reduce their spending to bare essentials. Macmillan warns that thousands of parents could already be struggling with the cost of cancer and the issue will only worsen as almost half the population is predicted to get the disease at some point in their lives by 2020. Extra costs include travel to

and from hospital appointments; an increase in household bills due to being at home more and feeling the cold after treatment; and paying for extra support with help at home such cleaning. And many people have to cut down their working hours or stop working altogether because they are too unwell resulting in a significant loss of income. Macmillan, which offers grants, benefits advice and financial guidance for people affected by cancer, is urging people to seek financial help as soon as possible to stop money worries spiralling out of control. This is particularly important as previous research by the charity shows that more than a third (36%) of people with cancer had no idea that cancer would affect them financially, and a further one in ten (9%) underestimated the extent that they’d be affected. It warns that otherwise the average family could be forced to turn to their savings, credit cards, take out a loan or even sell their home to cover the potential shortfall. Macmillan says that there is help available, but people need to know that they can get support and ask for it before financial problems mount up. Lynda Thomas, Chief

Executive at Macmillan Cancer Support, says: “At a time when thousands of families are struggling to make ends meet, a cancer diagnosis can be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, sending them into financial freefall. We’re talking about families whose world has already been turned upside down and now they’re having to stop going out or spending money on small treats such as toys for their children or magazines. And even then they’re still at risk of getting into debt. It’s got to be a very worrying, isolating place to be. “When you’re diagnosed with cancer, the last thing you need to be worrying about is how to pay the bills and keep a roof over your head. But the one thing I would say is that you don’t have to do this alone – there is help out there. At Macmillan we offer financial information and support to help people get back on their feet. Last year we helped 90,000 people affected by cancer unlock £267million in benefits alone.” No-one should face financial worries alone. For financial support and to find a nearby face-toface benefits advisor visit www.macmillan.org.uk/moneyworries or call free on 0808 808 00 00.

RSPB’s Big Wild Sleepout: 29 – 31 July 2016

GROWN-UPS and children alike are in for a treat over the upcoming summer holidays as the RSPB will once again be urging nature lovers to spend a night under the stars for its annual Big Wild Sleepout. The charity is challenging children and their families across the UK to go on a mini-adventure, get wild and discover what goes bump in the night with the amazing nocturnal wildlife on their doorstep. For the fourth year running, happy campers across the country will be encouraged to sleep out in their own gardens or outdoor spaces to get close to nature and discover which creatures they share their homes with. The event takes place over the last weekend in July, and with the late sunsets and early sunrises in store, there will be plenty of funfilled hours for people of all ages to set up camp and spend a memorable night in nature. Whether it be glamping in tents or caravans, getting back to basics in dens and shelters or even roughing it under open skies and a blanket of stars, there will be Sleepout styles to cater for all levels and ages. Thousands will be having Sleepouts in their gardens and back yards in addition to organ-

ised events taking place at RSPB nature reserves across the country, and partner sites for those that would prefer a guided experience teeming with wildlife. Evening activities will vary for each event, but a few will include stargazing, bushcraft, fireside cooking and fun with stories round the campfire. Some of the more extraordinary Sleepouts in the pipeline include stepping back in time and camping out in a museum, sleeping out under a wind turbine and seeing shooting stars, globular clusters and the international space station with a variety of telescopes, an indoor planetarium and a meteor roadshow! In addition to spending a night in nature’s home and getting to know the night time wildlife around them, those taking part can choose to donate money to help the RSPB give nature a home. The Big Wild Sleepout is part of the RSPB’s ‘Giving Nature a Home’ campaign, which is aimed at inspiring everyone to do their bit for nature, wherever they live and however big their outside space. James Harding-Morris, Big Wild Sleepout organiser said: “Thousands of people across the UK will be going on a mini adventure and getting closer to wildlife in our fourth Big Wild Sleepout event. Our main aim is to get children and grown-ups connected to nature to help pre-

serve it for future generations and what better way to do this than spending a night under the stars and getting to know the amazing animals around us that thrive in the dark. Nature is in trouble and by taking part in Sleepout and sharing your experiences with the RSPB, we’re getting a deeper understanding of the wildlife around us, as well as helping to give nature a home.” Rohan, designer and supplier of outdoor clothing and footwear, has leant its support to Big Wild Sleepout for the second year running. Roger Cann, Managing Director for Rohan, said: “We’re delighted to be involved in this year’s Big Wild Sleepout again as getting people outdoors, discovering local wildlife and having fun whilst doing so is something Rohan supports. Whether it’s wrapping up warm with base layers or waterproofs to keep the rain out, the RSPB’s novice or experienced naturalists can kit themselves out for a night in the wild, whatever the weather.” Sign up for a Big Wild Sleepout pack and register to take part from 15 June at www.rspb.org.uk/sleepout. the swiss Garden, full of charming yet quirky little buildings set in Lord ongley’s lovely undulating landscape and designed to look like the rolling green foothills of the swiss Alps, is the perfect setting for fun and fantasy. the very first Mad hatter’s May day festival took place on sunday 1st May, and was a resounding success, assisted by some very good weather ordered in especially by the team! visitors enjoyed watching and taking part in activities such as Maypole dancing, watching the hemlock Morris dancers, were mesmerised by a card-shuffling magician and entertained by

characters from Alice in Wonderland at the Mad hatter’s tea party under the shade of our magnificent Cedar tree. over 800 people attended the event, and shrunk to Alice size to sit on the giant chair under our floral Arch or pose with flamingos and a large ‘drink Me’ bottle elsewhere in the garden. the Queen of hearts reigned supreme in the Craft Marquee, and the garden was full of laughter, music and jingling bells – a magical day indeed, and one we hope to repeat next year… look out for our 2017 events programme later in the year – www.shuttleworth.org/events.

Do you need a divorce lawyer? Solicitor or barrister? You choose OFTEN, if you see a solicitor, they will find and appoint a suitable barrister for you if needed. Barristers provide specialist advice and representation in legal disputes, including representing their clients in court cases. Traditionally the only way to instruct a barrister was through a solicitor with the attendant potential duplication of effort and increased costs. But a recent rule change means that anyone can now go directly to a barrister without having first to instruct a solicitor. Some barristers additionally have special permission from the Bar Council, their professional governing body, to conduct litigation which means they are permitted to carry out all the tasks traditionally performed by a solicitor as well as provide you with expert representation in court should your case reach that stage. ‘Cutting out the middle man’ by going direct to a barrister, and also doing some of the work yourself if you wish, may mean a big saving in legal costs at the end of the day. Because you can instruct the barrister on a task-by-task basis, agreeing the fees in advance, often for a fixed amount, it is easier to keep control of the legal costs and you retain control of your case. You can have the barrister do as much or as little as you like and instruct them throughout the case or just intermittently on an ad hoc basis as and when you need expert advice. By having the right to conduct litigation Lisa Smith is authorised not only to advise and draft documents on direct instructions from her clients, but also to perform all of the administrative and procedural functions previously undertaken only by solicitors. This all encompassing qualification allows your case to be managed throughout by someone who understands family law from both the advocate’s and the solicitor’s perspective and who has more than 20 years of experience in all aspects of family law cases. Lisa has set up her own Barrister’s Chambers in Ampthill to provide this service in the local area. Lisa was called to the bar in 1994 and has practised in specialist London Chambers as well as several national and local solicitors’ firms. As a member of both Resolution and the Family Law Bar Association, Lisa is obliged to adhere to the Family Law Protocol which places a professional obligation on family lawyers to retain professional objectivity and respect for everyone involved in the dispute, minimise costs, and strive to assist the parties to reach agreement through all available means. Court proceedings are absolutely a last resort and Resolution lawyers are obliged to refrain from using inflammatory language both written and spoken and to conduct matters in a constructive and non-confrontational manner at all times. In family cases there are no ‘winners’ it is a difficult and

stressful time for all parties involved. By far the best resolution is a negotiated agreement that ensures the needs of any children are met appropriately and provides the best outcome for you and your family that is possible in the circumstances. Expert advice at the outset, so that you are aware of the ‘best and worst case scenarios’ and know how the court would approach your case allows you to explore all possible resolutions at the earliest possibly opportunity and makes finding a compromise with your partner much more likely. Direct Access to a family law barrister can therefore be a ‘fast track’ to resolution. You can get expert advice at the outset, as much or as little continuing involvement as you wish and the continuity of support from just one lawyer with you retaining control throughout. Using a barrister who also has the Right to conduct litigation means that at any stage; if dealing with the paperwork becomes too much of a task or disruption to your everyday life, if you feel the need to remove yourself from dealing directly with your spouse or their lawyer for a time, or for the rest of the case, or the issues become more complex than anticipated for example, you can simply hand over the entire workload to your lawyer. Direct Access is becoming increasingly popular as members of the public acknowledge the huge advantages dealing with their case in this way this can have over using the traditional route of instructing a local law firm to handle matters for them. Because the majority of barristers are based in London or major cities however Direct Access, or Public Access as it is also known, may not in reality be an attractive option if you want a barrister you can easily meet with as and when you need to. For members of the public in Bedfordshire who have divorce and other family issues to be resolved there is now a local and convenient alternative option, with established Heritage Park Chambers set up by Lisa Smith in Ampthill. Lisa offers a free initial consultation, with no obligation, via email, by telephone or face to face meeting so that you can consider your case together in general terms, discuss your options and the costs implications and decide whether direct access to a barrister is right for you.

Local Party Wall expert reports spike in enquiries CHARTERED surveyor Alex Manuel, of Flitwick based Cube Building Consultancy, has reported a large up turn in enquiries from local homeowners, developers and landlords seeking a range of party wall services. Alex is recognised as one of the UK’s leading experts in the party wall discipline and recently addressed the learned society of Pyramus and Thisbe at a conference in Cambridge. Alex told the Bulletin: “Whilst many may consider the Party Wall Act 1996 an esoteric and somewhat dry subject matter, it has become ever more relevant in later years. Before deciding whether or not to move house many people weigh up the options of extending their existing property, whether by loft conversion or perhaps a rear kitchen extension. This has resulted in a sharp increase in the act being invoked and Cube are currently experiencing unprecedented levels of such enquiries.” If you require party wall advice or would like to instruct Alex as your party wall surveyor please contact him directly on 01525 722213.

AUTISM Bedfordshire are calling on local businesses, schools, friends and family to get on board, don their silliest socks and help to raise vital funds for the charity’s Summer Activity Scheme. Whether you’re at your place of work, at a fitness class or on a training course, why not join in the fun for a fantastic local cause? The activities are tailored to the ages,

interests and abilities of the children, with specialist autism trained staff on hand to offer support in providing a positive, enjoyable experience. A parent of a child with autism commented: ‘’This scheme means the world to us as a family and to Aaron as an individual. It provides the consistency and structure Aaron so desperately seeks during the school holidays. It gives us time out from each other and enables Aaron to socialise in a non-judgemental group.” A child who attended the scheme last year said: “It’s help-

ing me with my autism, because I am learning new things and learning to communicate properly.” Funds raised from holding a Silly Sock Day will go towards the cost of running the scheme which last year helped a staggering 139 children with autism in the local community. So what are you waiting for? As well as wearing your silly socks why not put on a silly sock gig, coffee morning, flash mob or talent contest? The possibilities are endless! music a

Summer concert Woburn Parish Church Sunday 26 June

It will be ‘hats off to Haydn’ at the Danesborough Chorus Summer Concert on Sunday 26 June, in Woburn Parish Church at 7.30 pm, with Haydn’s St Cecilia Mass, and his Symphony No. 47. Danesborough Chorus will be conducted by Ian Smith, accompanied by the Milton Keynes City Orchestra, and joined by soloists Bethany Seymour (soprano), Joel Williams (tenor) and Callum Thorpe (bass). “St Cecilia is the patron saint of music, and Haydn’s St Cecilia Mass is one of his grandest Mass settings, as well as one of his most beautiful,” says Ian Smith. “With the sunny exuberance that was Haydn’s hallmark, it is wonderfully tuneful with jubilant choruses complemented by expressive solo arias. It demonstrates his unique gift for taking a small musical motif and expanding it into a flood of fresh ideas.” Born in humble circumstances in Austria in 1732, Franz Joseph Haydn spent much of his working life at the Court of the wealthy Esterhazy family. A devout Catholic, his St Cecilia Mass was written in 1766 and dedicated to the

Blessed Virgin Mary. He became one of the most prolific and versatile of the Classical composers, and is often known as the ‘father of the symphony’. His Symphony No 47 is musical invention at its finest, and has the nickname ‘Palindrome’ because in both the Minuet and the Trio sections, the second half of each is the same as the first, but in reverse. That the music is equally beautiful whether played forwards or backwards is testament to Haydn’s genius. In all, he wrote 14 masses and 104 symphonies, as well as a myriad of string quartets and instrumental pieces. Ian Smith says: “We look forward to welcoming you, your friends and your family to our 41st summer concert, our first on a Sunday, and remember to bring your own strawberries and champagne for the traditional extended interval on the lawns around Woburn Church!” Tickets for the concert are now available: £22 and £17 (reserved); £10 (unreserved) including a free programme. Concession tickets of £5 in all three price bands are available for under-18s. For tickets and more information, contact Danesborough Chorus Box Office tel: 01908 583460, or visit website: www.danesborough.org.uk.

the quarry e Creative Arts Festival

The Quarry Theatre is set for a very busy June as they play host to performances and workshops as part of The Bedford School Creative Arts Festival. The festival opens with Bluebeard the Musical (15-16 June, 7.30pm), performed by Bedford Prep School pupils and featuring original music. Join us as we journey with Bluebeard, the fearsome pirate on the search for a new wife, and find answers to some crucial questions – most importantly, just why is his beard so blue? Taking advantage of the beautiful Quarry Theatre surroundings, both the odyssey and treasure island will be performed on a bespoke set in the Quarry Theatre Gardens. Performed by Bedford School pupils, David Farr’s the odyssey (20-21 June, 7.30pm) delivers a fresh look at Homer’s epic. Taking place during UK Refugee Week, this production shines a light on the displacement of people by war, the current refugee crisis and the universal drive to provide a better future for ourselves and our families. Having collaborated with the likes of Calvin Harris, Arctic Monkeys and Florence & the Machine, Dizzee has evolved from his grime and garage roots into the mainstream scene, which has found him featured on the bill for festivals like Glastonbury and Radio 1 Big Weekend numerous times. His huge hits include ‘I Luv U’ and Fix Up Look Sharp, which went straight into the UK top 20 single charts. As well as his number 1 hit ‘Dance Wiv Me’ featuring Calvin Harris. himself deeper into the mainstream dance scene with this collaboration. Other hits include further number one hits ‘Holiday’ and ‘Dirtee Disco’ and ‘Bonkers’, which he sang at the opening ceremony for the 2012 Olympics to an estimated worldwide audience of nine hundred million! Supporting Dizzee will be West London’s finest pirate radio station Kurupt FM. Starting out on Youtube with their own DIY webisodes, which got the attention of Roughcut, the producers of The Office. Shortly after a pilot was picked by BBC3, this received a massive response and Kurupt FM had instantly gained a cult following. Having sold out Village Underground in London with their “Champagne Steam Rooms” night in May and playing the likes of Bestival, Creamfields, Outlook, NASS, Boomtown, Kendal Calling and MADE festival over the summer. With their second series of People Just Do Nothing just launching on BBC3 and promotion on BBC1 and BBC2, the Kurupt FM takeover continues and no one is safe! To add to this exciting line up will be English grime MC and rapper Wiley,

who is often referred to as the ‘Godfather of Grime’. Wiley is considered a pioneer in the English underground music scene with a prolific work rate and a versatile music artist with many crossover hits. Wiley has continued to make grime music while also releasing mainstream singles, such as the top 10 hits ‘Wearing My Rolex’, ‘Never’ Be Your Woman and his UK number one ‘Heatwave’. Next on the bill is Jaguar Skills. The rise of Jaguar Skills has been well documented. Honing his craft and love of music for the last 20 years Jag has remained true to his school and kept a mysterious edge to his character; with details of his real name, age and home town etc left largely unconfirmed… Completing the line up is rapper, songwriter, recording artist, producer Ms Dynamite, who is the recipient of the Mercury prize, winner of two Brit awards and three Mobos. tickets at £35 can be purchased from www. bedfordparkconcerts. co.uk

Live & Encore Screenings

Live & Encore Screenings not only bring you productions from the West End without you having to travel to London, but you can also be a part of the build-up to the show. Be introduced to the detail of the stories behind some of your favourite tales, including hamlet, the railway Children and romeo & Juliet, as well as behind the scenes footage of the production with live screenings. Feel involved in the buzz surrounding the performance, all from the comfort of your local Grove Theatre, Dunstable. hamlet, broadcast live from the Royal Shakespeare Company on Wednesday 8 June at 7pm, tells the story of a prince with the world at his feet. Young, wealthy and living a hedonistic life studying abroad, Hamlet does not expect to hear the news that his father has died. Returning home he finds his world is utterly changed, his certainties smashed and his home a foreign land. Struggling to understand his place in a new world order, he faces a stark choice; submit, or rage against the injustice of his new reality. As relevant today as when it was written, Hamlet confronts each of us with the mirror

of our own mortality in an imperfect world. A family favourite; the railway Children will be an encore screening (pre-recorded repeat of the live performance) on friday 24 June at 7pm. Featuring the train from the original muchloved film and a set created across railway tracks at the National Railway Museum in Yorkshire, this production is not to be missed. The Railway Children follows three sheltered siblings who suffer a huge upheaval when their father is falsely imprisoned. Moving from London to rural Yorkshire penniless, their tale follows life living next to a railway line and travels through themes of justice, the importance of family and the kindness of strangers. A timeless tale like you’ve never seen it before, with another chance to join the amazement of this revolutionary version of the production. And romeo & Juliet – surely it would be a crime not to see the classic Romeo & Juliet at least once in life? Or for others, the chance to see it again, but this time treating yourself to the latest modern version. The Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company presents a new, highly passionate vision of Shakespeare’s heart-breaking tale of forbidden love, broadcast live on thursday 7 July at 7.15pm.

AMPTHILL AND DISTRICT PROBUS CLUB

‘Probus’ is a meeting point for retired PROfessional and BUSiness men which was founded fifty year ago, our own club being in existence for 42 of those years and covering the area from Toddington to Houghton Conquest.

We meet on the first tuesday of every month at ‘the Cross Keys’ in Pulloxhill to socialise, lunch at 12.30 and regularly have a guest speaker. We tend to finish around 2.30pm. in addition we have two weekend breaks a year, occasional visits to places of interest and ladies invitation lunches.

for further info call 01767 642412 email: stjohnsfundraising@sueryder.org

Our members are a friendly crowd and love to welcome new members. If you are interested, please e-mail Paul on pscriv@hotmail.co.uk who will be pleased to bring you along and introduce you.
