The scheme being administered by Central Bedfordshire Council aims to improve the county’s market towns. The money is available to replace or renovate shop fronts and to help improve the look of vacant retail units.

Improved A-level results across Central Beds
Early indications for provisional results for state-funded schools across the whole of Central Bedfordshire show that 86.9 per cent of students achieved three of more a-levels (or equivalent) at a*-E, up 4.2 per cent from last year. The average points score per student has also risen dramatically from 2015, up almost 94 points from 724.1 to 818. There have been plenty of individual success stories with three Redborne Upper School students – Alex Glynn-Davies, James Williams-Crowther (two a*s and two as) and Rebecca Allen – off to Oxford and Cambridge, while Ellie Yip (four a*s) and Lucy Turner (3 as) secured places to study medicine at Edinburgh and Birmingham respectively. a quarter of all grades at Harlington Upper School were a*/a with 18 students awarded grades a or a* in three or more subjects: Victoria Benner,
Gianni Bianco, Peter Brown, Francesca Collier, Daniel Corvesor, Francesca Denton, Natasha Doyle, Scott Dickenson, Alice Double, Charley Goodwin, Henny Horsler, Evie Jackson, Helen Morley, Joel Riddaway, Samuel Sun, Rebecca Thompson, Katherine Wildey and Ellie Wright.
“In 2014/15 we provided care and support to residents from 92 villages and towns across Bedfordshire. On behalf of our patients and their families, I would like to personally thank Tesco’s shoppers for their generous support and Tesco’s Flitwick for allowing us to hold a collection day at their store. “We are a community-based hospice, and we can only provide care to those with life limiting illness thanks to the generosity of our local community. “I would also like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the 300 plus volunteers who give their time and talents freely and help make St John’s a very special place for those who are near death.” It costs over £2.8m p.a. to run St John’s, the vast majority of which, is donated by local residents and businesses.

TODay, as I write this, is my mother’s birthday. She will be 84 and at the weekend there will be a small family party to celebrate. There will be memories of all that has filled her life to date, not least a long marriage, three children and nine grandchildren. Sadly, what is less clear is whether my mother will remember much or any of that; it is unlikely that she will recognise many of those celebrating with her; and she may not even remember that it is her birthday that is the focus of the day. my mother, like so many others, has dementia. Over the last few years we have watched helpless as, like her mother before her, her memory has faded to the point, where at times, it is hard to discern whether there is any recall or recognition at all. It is desperate for her, and so hard for us and all who know her. as I have said so often in the funerals of those who have died after a period of dementia or alzheimer’s the experience is, to a greater or lesser degree, that of an early bereavement – losing your loved one prematurely before the end of their physical life. a report in the last few days highlighted the needs of the 675,000 people with dementia in England. The report also indicated the varying standards of care across the country which was described as a ‘post-code lottery’. This will not do and we must endorse the comment of Caroline abrahams of aGE uK who said: ‘We must continue efforts to improve access and quality of care for the growing number of us living with dementia’. Thankfully there are some good services in Bedfordshire but there is more to do. Visiting my mother this week was not easy – it is deeply painful not to be able to interact with someone you love and who loves you. But she is my mother; she still embodies all that nurture that brought me into being and enabled me to flourish. my mother is still precious in the sight of God – a unique and special human being – and however distressing things are now, I must never lose sight of that truth.

Monthly update from the Police and Crime Commissioner by Kathryn Holloway
100 DAY REFLECTION
IN aNy new high profile public role the achievements of the first 100 days merit reflection. I am happy to comment on mine, given the particular importance to me of keeping my pre-election promises. The first priority in my Police and Crime Plan for Bedfordshire is the return of more visible community policing. The Deputy Chief Constable mark Collins and I embarked on a series of monthly public meetings to announce the brand new recruits and other officers who are being tasked with delivering this through seven Community Policing Hubs which we are deploying throughout the county by the end of the year. The first was held in leighton Buzzard where part of my new collaboration plan with the Fire Service – which is among the most extensive in the country – was also highlighted, since I have secured agreement with Bedfordshire Fire and rescue Service for police to share its fire station there in future and building work is imminent to achieve this. The second was in luton where we were joined by Insp. mo aziz who is heading up the Force’s bid to recruit officers from Black minority Ethnic (BmE) backgrounds so that our police both look and sound like all the communities they serve. I have succeeded in arranging for all the Force’s recruitment panels to have a BmE member, for an independent recruitment expert to advise on questions and for the panel members to scrutinise these for any sub-conscious bias. In Bedford, a new enquiries office will open right on the High Street and before December we will hold meetings in Biggleswade, Dunstable and Houghton regis to bring news of extra police and address the key crime and policing concerns in these areas. I am particularly proud of the grants I have been able to distribute investing £147,000 in refuge places for those fleeing domestic violence and to help rebuild lives. I am providing funds for a video-link to the courts so that victims of rape and sex abuse need not attend trials in person with all the trauma involved in seeing their attacker and their associates at close range. I hope you will see this progress as a positive change in policing.

Beavers enjoy Bromham’s outdoor experience FlITWICK Beavers (boys and girls aged 6 to 8) spent an evening at Bromham activity centre on the bouldering wall and going underground in the caving system. Oliver Clark said, “It was great going underground. It was very dark and there were lots of twists and turns and slopes to get up before we found the way out. adult volunteer Hannah Turton said: “For many of the children this was the first time they had been underground and although some were a bit unsure at first, all of them grew in confidence and they all thoroughly enjoyed it.” The Cub Scouts (boys and girls aged 8 to 10 ½) brought along their parents, carers and siblings for the end of term treasure hunt. This resulted in over 200 people walking around Flitwick trying to answer questions or find out where particular photos were taken. Jonathan Smith, lead volunteer for the Group said: “Seeing so many people walking around the town in Scout uniform demonstrated our involvement in the community and people probably found parts of the town they
didn’t know existed!” The Scouts (boys and girls aged 10½ to 14) have recently been working towards their outdoor challenge, team working and skills badges. The Cubs and Scouts (boys and girls aged 8 to 14) are off to summer camp at youlbury in Oxfordshire this month where the activities will include bivouac building, climbing, cooking, hiking and wide games. adult volunteer michelle lewis said: “Scouting provides great opportunities for young people to try different activities and for adults to use their knowledge and skills to develop and help the young people. The children going to camp will get the opportunity to try activities for the first time. They will go home with great stories of the activities they have been involved in.” With Beaver Scouts celebrating their 30th birthday and Cub Scouts celebrating their 100th birthday, the Group has lots of plans in place from September to December to celebrate these occasions. The man that made Georgian Ampthill
maNy ampthill residents and visitors to the town may only know ‘The Ossory’ as the ‘pub’, but it was also the name of lord Ossory (1745-1818), who built the market Square, The Town Pump and thatched cottages along Woburn Street. He also employed Capability Brown from 1772-75, to do the landscaping the Park and commissioned Katherine’s Cross in 1773. lord Ossory was a colourful character who married the divorced Duchess of Grantham, anne liddell, after a scandal which resulted in them being ostracised from london Society and confined to ampthill for most of their time. Their home was ‘The Park House’, set under the north lea of the Greensand ridge and now divided up into four apartments. In the late 18th century, the Ossorys set about renovating the
house and park. Come and see the impact Brown made on the ampthill Great Park by taking a Guided Tour on Sunday 18th September. The Friends of ampthill Park will take groups around the Park from 10am to 4pm, and show and explain the Brown features The walks will start from the west car park, mK45 2HX and are of varying lengths depending on peoples’ walking ability. To complement this you may also like to come to a one man theatrical show about Capability Brown, ‘The Eye Catcher’, at Parkside Hall ampthill on the 16th September at 7.30pm. The show by John Cobb, dramatised Brown’s life as probable one of England’s greatest gardeners. Warden Abbey Vineyard celebrates with open day THE replanting of an original medieval vineyard is coming up for its 30th birthday. and to celebrate an open day has been planned for the occasion to give visitors an opportunity to see an English community vineyard at work and taste its wares. Warden abbey Vineyard was, from 1135 aD, part of a large Cistercian monastery between Cardington and Old Warden. Wine and ale was produced by the monks, as well as food for the whole community, including the grazing of several thousand sheep. It was one of the largest and most significant abbeys in the whole of southern England but went the way of many monasteries in 1537, when Henry VIII destroyed it to help facilitate his divorce and remarriage. The land was handed to the Gostwick family and the stone from the abbey was used to build the original Bedford Jail. The Whitbread family bought the site in 1784, including a small building that was part of a Tudor mansion built after the abbey was demolished, that still remains, and the site of the vineyard, which was replanted in 1986, by lady Jane Whitbread. In 2010 the Whitbread family leased the vineyard to the Bedfordshire rural Communities Charity, and it is continuing to develop and thrive. It is run by volunteers and Jane markham, an expert on the production of wines and vineyard production manager, helps and advises on the vineyard. Jane said: “We produce some excellent award winning white wines, made from German grape
varieties, and for the first time this year we have made a sparkling wine. “We produce between 3,000 and 4,000 bottles a year, off approximately 4,000 vines.” New vines are being added all the time, to ensure the health and longevity of the vineyard. The grapes are usually harvested in early October when around 60 volunteers pick the grapes that are then sent to Denbies, a big wine producer in Dorking, Surrey, to be pressed and bottled. Derek Smedley, one of only a few hundred masters of Wine in the world, advises the vineyard at no cost and decides on the best blend of the vineyard’s four grapes that have been harvested. Several different wines are made depending on the the annual yield, each with their own distinctive taste” The wines, which I can attest are delicious, sell for around £10 to £15 per bottle and is available at the vineyard or in local wine shops and stores. The Open Day is on Sunday September 11, from 11am – 4pm, when there will be vineyard tours, a barbecue, animal encounters with ‘Teaching Talons’, and of course refreshments. There will also be local food stalls and wine tasting teach-ins at the event. Everyone is welcome and admission is £2 for adults and free for children. This is a local success story that should not be missed, which you can toast with Bedfordshire’s very own wines. Opportunity to enjoy Bedfordshire’s countryside
THE month of September is an exciting time for those who like to get out into the countryside and enjoy a good walk. The Bedfordshire Walking Festival 2016, now in its eighth year, starts on Saturday 10th with walks everyday for nine days. For those wanting a explore different ways of walking try the Nordic Walking Taster sessions and a session with the new craze of Fitness walking in Bedford. Fitness walking is much easier on the knees and joints than running or jogging and burns off the same amount of energy. Encouraging adults and children to be able to read and use a map is no different to encouraging people to read books and newspapers and to this end on Sunday 11th September at the marston Vale Forest Centre there are two half day sessions entitled "maps Can Be Fun". The morning session is a family session for parents or grandparents to bring their children and grandchildren. The practical session starts with an introduction to the basics of how to read a map, after that there is an opportunity to put these new found skills into practice with a fun walk around the park. The cost is £10 for up to two adults and two children. The afternoon session is similar but adults only. The cost is £5 per person. Booking is essential. living around Bedford offers walks everyday with some excellent choices commencing with a delightful North Beds circular starting from the entrance to Twinwoods arena on Saturday afternoon, followed on Sunday afternoon with a lovely circular from Bromham mill. a monday

Don’t wait until winter for flu jab LOCAL doctors are urging people in Bedfordshire to have the flu jab well before winter, and say it is especially important for those at risk of more serious health complications and even death from flu. The flu vaccine is available from the NHS free of charge to pregnant women, young children, carers, people in long term care facilities, anyone with a long term health condition, such as heart disease, diabetes or neurological conditions, and people over 65. The vaccine is safe and effective, and can reduce the chances of getting flu and its complications by 70 per cent and of death from flu by 80 per cent. Last winter in Bedfordshire over 1,000 people were admitted to hospital because of flu. Public Health teams are especially concerned that the number of pregnant women who had the flu jab last winter fell by 6.7 per cent
compared with the previous year, and less than half of two year olds, and adults under 65 who have health conditions had the flu vaccine. Dr Dayo Kuku, Respiratory Clinical Lead for Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group, and a GP, said: “You can’t get flu from the jab. The vaccine stimulates your body's immune system to make antibodies which attack the flu virus. The flu vaccine changes every year to fight the latest strains of flu – so even if you had a jab last winter, you need another one this year to stay safe.” If you are eligible for the free flu jab, you can get it from your GP or local pharmacy. If you aren’t eligible for a free flu jab, you can still receive the vaccination from your local pharmacy for a small fee. Find out more by visiting www.nhs.uk and search for ‘flu vaccine’.

Have a look at this business opportunity!
my name is rosie Bignall and I am based in Sandy, Bedfordshire. I started The Confetti Workshop about 12 years ago after a nasty experience when I was trying to arrange my own wedding. It has gone from strength to strength over this time offering wedding planning – alterations and our fabulous mother of the Bride and Groom complete ensembles to buy or hire. I also offer outfits for wedding guests/cruise or racing clients. I always have some special designer names in stock, at the moment my favourites are the John Charles lime green beaded embellished dress and jacket… gorgeous… and keep a look out for aideen Bodkin, the fabulous Irish designer, I have a very pretty retro inspired dusty pink two piece dress and jacket from her range at the moment, (but I doubt it will be here for long). There are shoes, bags, hats, fascinators and accessories to complement all the outfits. most of these are from the comprehensive Jacque Vert collection. It would be so lovely to find someone with the passion and energy to be able to take this over. I have

some medical issues now and can’t give the business the attention it deserves. I would be willing to offer any help and advice and to share my contact and supplier lists. I have managed this from home and as long as you are fairly flexible you can choose the hours you work, (maybe around the school run). It has been a rewarding and worthwhile venture, I have loved every minute and have even stayed in touch with some of ‘my girls’. But I think the best testament that we are doing a good job is having The Confetti Workshop name passed on as recommendation and our testimonials just speak for themselves! If you are interested in having a chat about the business, please call me on 01767 682481 and leave a short message if I am not about.
Keep safe in the kitchen
l Avoid leaving children in the kitchen alone when cooking. Keep saucepan handles and matches out of their reach to keep them safe. l Don’t be distracted while cooking, don’t use your mobile phone while cooking or leave the kitchen. l If you must leave the kitchen take pans off the heat or turn them down to avoid the risk of fire. l Double check the hob is off when you’ve finished cooking. l Keep tea towels and cloths away from the cooker and hob. l Take care if you’re wearing loose clothing – this can easily catch fire.
EDITORIAL: pat@rosettapublishing.com
l Ensure electrical leads and appliances are kept away from water, curtains and kitchen rolls. l Keep your equipment clean and in good working order. l Keep your grill clean, a build-up of fat and grease can ignite a fire. l Don’t cook after drinking alcohol or taking drugs. l Hot oil can catch fire easily – if its smoking it’s too hot. l NEVER throw water on a chip pan fire. l If a pan catches fire, don’t take any risks – Get Out, Stay Out, and Call 999. l Don’t forget to get a smoke alarm and test it weekly. DONNa lopez is a woman in business who knows how to stay chilled when life doesn’t go according to plan. Since starting her own sport and remedial massage business 11 years ago, it has survived a fire and Donna has beaten cancer and then overcome more health problems caused by the treatment of the disease. “If these things come in threes, I am hoping our new business premises will bring me better luck,” said Donna, 50, who has re-opened her service in a new ground floor room at Enterprise Centre in Wrest Park, Silsoe. She started her business at a building on a mini-business park in maulden. a fire destroyed neighbouring premises and left Donna’s room unusable because of the lingering stench of smoke and it was during this time that Donna had to take time off work due the diagnosis of cancer. She later moved to premises in a lovely rural setting of Silsoe but again had to give it up work as it was then discovered the treatment caused a blockage in her digestive tract and she was unable to eat until undergoing an operation. “It wasn’t a weight loss programme I would recommend,”
said Donna, who lives in marston moretaine. “However, having been through all that I can assure clients who themselves have suffered from cancer or other illnesses, that massage is not just for treating injuries, but can help people in recovery through relaxation by releasing tense muscles.” Donna’s treatments use a variety of advanced soft tissue techniques to tackle problems such as head aches, frozen shoulder, sciatica, lower back pain, and includes post-operative work on scar tissue including caesarians and hysterectomy. as well as this, her specialised massages include Hot Stone Fusion, pregnancy and post-natal treatments. To tie in with her new premises Donna is launching a new look website giving information www.theraflexmassage.co.uk. While she did not lose her hair during her own treatment, Donna has been specifically growing her locks into a pony tail for the last three years only to have it cut off again to support the charity www.littleprincesses.org.uk in providing wigs for young children Please help her to support the charity through making a donation to www.just giving.com/Donnalopez1.
Winner of home business of the year THE winners of the 2016 Guardian Small Business Showcase awards were announced at a ceremony in london recently. Over 1,000 promising businesses were nominated for these prestigious awards to celebrate innovation and excellence across the uK. Those shortlisted gathered at a contemporary location in london’s Kings Cross. The finalists, nibbling on canapés and sipping Prosecco, gathered on the roof terrace and took the opportunity to network with other like minded businesses. Overlooking a sunlit public square, the crowd posed for photographs listening to the evening’s special guest, Pip Black, co-founder of Frame, a london-based pay-as-you-go fitness brand. Nigel Spencer from the British library’s Business and IP Centre and Ian Gibbs, head of commercial insight at the Guardian were delighted to present longcroft luxury Cat Hotel the winning title of ‘Home Innovation Business 2016’ the judges agreed they stood out for their ground-breaking approach to improving the service offered to pet owners and becoming mar-
ket leaders within the luxury cat hotel industry. longcroft, founded by abi Purser in 2010, went on to franchise the business just two years later and has now successfully opened 11 boutique luxury cat hotels up and down the country. amongst the heavyweight judging team was Dragon’s Den’s James Caan who together with the rest of the panel felt the rapid growth and consistent approach in all of its 11 locations was very impressive. “Clearly, there is a case to build an enterprise. I know how much money goes on people’s pets. It’s a massive market. It’s a nice little business.” longcroft provides state of the art, immaculate, safe, homely environments for feline guests to enjoy whilst their owners are on holiday. aly rochester, owner of longcroft luton says: “We are delighted to have won such a prestigious award. With just six suites I love that we are able to offer such a beautiful environment and a bespoke and personalised stay for each and every guest.”

MID BEDS BULLETIN SEPTEMBER 2016 — 11
Central Bedfordshire Council Local Plan update CENTral Bedfordshire Council has held a number of consultation workshops and meetings with stakeholders recently on its new local Plan for the area and the next stage ahead. The ‘Call for Sites’ consultation in april 2016 resulted in the Council receiving a total of 830 sites for potential development. Work is now underway to update and prepare all the technical documents in order to produce an overall strategy for planning in Central Bedfordshire up to 2035. The Council will produce a shortlist of suitable sites for further consultation. as always, housing need and land supply is the key issue. The Council have identified that between 28,000-32,000 new homes will be needed in the Central Bedfordshire area in 2015-2035. This would mean an increased population of around 45,000 people over 20 years. as a result it is likely that the Council will need to look for one or more new settlements in the area. The Council is also conducting a Green Belt review which may well lead to deallocating parts of the Green Belt in the south in order to meet the housing need. There is a ‘duty to cooperate’ with adjoining Councils in the delivery of housing. Central Bedfordshire is also affected by four housing market areas, namely luton, Stevenage, milton Keynes and Bedford. managing the demand arising from adjacent local authorities' housing needs will be the most challenging issue for the Council. also the Council are going out to town and parish councils as ‘community groups’
which will formulate ‘Com munity Plans’. Not to be confused with Neighbourhood Plans, Community Plans are designed to draw up key aims and objectives for smaller settlements that will feed into the local Plan. One of the key issues for the Council is the increasingly ageing population. It is estimated that there will be a 30% increase in over 75s and a 40% increase in over 85s over the course of the emerging local Plan period. Central Bedfordshire is keen to include provision for this growing sector in new residential supply and it is anticipated that future schemes will need to provide open market extra care housing. Part of the technical work relates to transport infrastructure for rail, road and cycling. The new local Transport Plan will be prepared alongside the new local Plan. The Council’s view is that growth and transport are inexplicably linked. East West rail is high up the agenda for Central Bedfordshire, and a proposed route has been identified for the milton Keynes to Cambridge connection. Other transport projects include the new m1 Junction 11a and the link to the a5 which is currently underway and the potential for a link from Junction 11a to the a6; the link to Woodside in Houghton regis; and addressing the problems of the a1 corridor. It is anticipated that a draft Plan with broad locations and potential levels of growth across the Council area will be published in December 2016. The ambitious timetable also expects the final version of the Plan to be submitted in December 2017.

So check out some of the funnies taking to the Grove Theatre stage, who are bound to have you in stitches at their sarcastically humorous and experienced views on life! rich Hall, the award-winning montana native, renowned for his expertly crafted tirades, quick fire banter with audiences and delightful musical sequences, saddles up and hitches his wagon to tour the British Isles once again. The star of BBC 4 documentaries rich Hall’s California Stars, rich Hall’s you Can Go To Hell, I’m Going To Texas and rich Hall’s Inventing the Indian, is bringing you his critically acclaimed grouchy, deadpan style (interestingly, the inspiration for the marvellously cantankerous barman, moe Szyslak in The Simpsons), which has established him as a master of absurdist irony and the king of rapid-fire wit. rich Hall and his virtuoso musical mates will give you a mash-up of music and comedy which he is proud to be ‘custom-made every night’. This is a comedian who’s plain spoken growling indignation hits his targets with precision every time and will leave you hanging on every word on Thursday 22 September at 8pm. Barnstormers Stand up Comedy nights are back at the Grove Theatre, starting on Thursday 15 September at 8pm! make Thursdays a game-changer and chuckle along to original comedy from three top comedians of the london circuit, including regulars from The Comedy Store and Jongleurs. Jim Davidson, Britain’s most controversial comedian celebrates an explosive forty years in show business, with not only one but two nights at the Grove Theatre, Dunstable! Written and developed by Jim, 40 years On is a heartfelt and hilarious autobiographical reflection on his legendary career. Funny, poignant and at times searingly honest, 40 years On looks back at the triumphs and tragedies of Jim Davidson, from his
breakthrough on New Faces in 1976, to winning Celebrity Big Brother in 2014. Jim will take you on a trip down memory lane, with never-before-heard stories, as he reminisces on the highs, lows and controversies of a unique life spent in the public eye. Picasso and the Masters of Print The Higgins Bedford 15th October
Picasso & the masters of Print opens at The Higgins Bedford on 15th October 2016; offering a unique opportunity to view some of the most important prints by one of the most highly regarded artists of the 20th century. renowned for his paintings and sculptures, Picasso was also the twentieth century’s greatest printmaker and the seven prints by Picasso held at The Higgins Bedford spectacularly showcase the varied printmaking techniques that he mastered. The print Still life under the lamp, 1962 is a highlight of the exhibition and one of Picasso’s best known linocuts. By then in his 80s Picasso continued to innovate, using a complex new technique to create this colourful night-time scene. The Frugal meal, 1904, is the earliest work in the exhibition and one of the last works of Picasso’s Blue Period. a haunting depiction
of an emaciated couple in a café in montmarte, The Frugal meal is considered to be one of the masterpieces of twentieth century graphic art. These stunning works will be accompanied by a wider exhibition of major artists’ original prints drawn from the Cecil Higgins Collection and further afield. Five centuries of printmaking will be on show, ranging from masterpieces by key figures in the history of European printmaking, such as rembrandt, Picasso and matisse. Portfolio Holder for leisure and Culture, Councillor Sarah-Jayne Holland said:”The fact that you are able to see the work of one of the twentieth centuries’ most revered artists in Bedford Borough is truly fantastic and I would like to encourage everyone to visit the new exhibition when it opens this autumn.” The prestigious collection of more than 400 prints housed at The Higgins Bedford spans all periods, styles and techniques of printmaking and includes the work of leading international artists, including rembrandt, Warhol, lichtenstein and Hockney.

Girlguiding Bedfordshire are winners
THE 7th leighton Buzzard rainbows and 1st leighton Buzzard Brownies were this year's joint winners of the Friends of leighton-linslade in Bloom Hanging Basket Competition for young People.
The competition, in which local lower schools and youth groups take part to create hanging baskets, is part of leighton-linslade in Bloom a charitable campaign that aims to create lasting improvements to the local environment for the benefit of all. On 18th July members of leighton Buzzard Girlguiding units were awarded the top prize by Councillor alan Brandham who presented the girls with the cup, sponsored by Kids Out, for their achievement. The baskets are on display at Parsons Close recreation Ground. Girlguiding is a super way for girls to have their own space; it gives girls a voice and has changed girl’s lives. Girlguiding is a charity and is looking for volunteers, so if you feel you could Get Involved they would love to hear from you. Please call 0800 169 5901 or visit www.bedsguiding.org.uk
