Having worked with local schools, charities and voluntary groups, John has been a pillar of the community for many years

and is highly respected for his dedication to the local area. Rupert steps into chairman role in council shake-up… EAST NORTHANTS COUNCIL NEWS

EASTNorthamptonshire Council has welcomed a new chairman for the next Civic Year. Councillor Rupert Reichhold, a district councillor for Oundle, took over from outgoing chairman, Cllr Marika Hillson, at the Annual Meeting of the Council for 2016/17. Cllr Reichhold has lived in Oundle since 1998 and has been a

district councillor for 17 years. For 12 years he also served as a Northamptonshire County Councillor. He is looking forward to representing the district and the work of the council at many events over the next 12 months. His consort is Nicolette Reichhold, his wife. District councillor for Rushden Pemberton Ward, Cllr Colin

Wright, was named as ViceChairman for this year. Cllr Reichhold said: “I would like to thank my colleagues for electing me as chairman for the forthcoming year, “I promise to do my best for our district. “I pay tribute to Cllr Hillson for her outstanding work as our chairman and I am looking forward to

working with our new Vice Chairman, Cllr Wright.” Events already planned for the year include a civic church service in Oundle, a fish and chip supper and a civic dinner to raise money for the Chairman’s charities – The National Autistic Society, The Royal Anglian Regiment Benevolent Charity and The Gurkha Welfare Trust.

STEVEN North has been re-elected un-opposed as Leader of East Northamptonshire Council. He is also leader of the ruling Conservative group and a member for Rushden Sartoris ward. Councillor Glenn Harwood MBE was re-elected as deputy leader and pledged his support to Councillor North, to the council and to the district. At the meeting, Councillor North said: “It is a real privilege to serve and lead this council. “At ENC we have always been

an efficient council, being innovative in what we do, and this will continue. “Local government is in a period of transformation. The way it is financed is changing, and we have to adapt to that change. Following the financial settlement in the autumn and more recently the spending review, we have seen our grants reduced and opportunities to raise income limited. “Despite this, we are in a reasonably sound position, and have still managed to use part of the

New Homes Bonus as intended, that is rewarding areas that have received growth. By the end of this financial year, we will have put nearly a million pounds back into the community with the Community Facilities Fund and the Member Empowerment Fund. Supporting our communities in this way is very important. “These are exciting times for East Northamptonshire with the building of Rushden Lakes, the development of Rushden East, supporting the new Garden

Village at Deenethorpe, putting in place a new district plan, championing Neighbourhood plans and overseeing a new leisure contract for the district that will see the development of more outreach work enabling people to participate in healthier and more active lifestyles.” Acknowledging the support and confidence of those around him, he said: “None of this can be achieved without the hard work and dedication from staff and members, so thank you all.”

Scores are on the doors

JUNE 2016 REPORTER #2 — 5

A MOVE to raise food hygiene standards and protect public health is being strongly supported by East Northamptonshire Council. Under the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, council environmental health teams regularly inspect and score food outlets from zero to five based on factors such as kitchen cleanliness, cooking methods and food safety management. However, in England, businesses do not have to display the ‘Scores on the Doors’ rating they have been awarded. Council leader Steven North, said: “450 of our food businesses have achieved the top 5 star rating and just over 100 have a rating of 4 stars.” “We know that by displaying their scores on their doors, these businesses enjoy an increase in trade as customers are confident they are receiving a service of the highest possible standard. “Compulsory display will mean that all businesses have to display this information.” For more information visit visit www.food.gov.

Taking a step back into Victorian times

RESIDENTS will have the chance to step back over more than 100 years to discover what it was like to live in Rushden in the Victorian era, the traders, the shops, the people and even the smells! Rushden Transport Museum and Railway, Rushden Museum and the Trading Places heritage project have teamed up to celebrate the hidden past of Rushden High Street with crime walks, a photographic exhibition and exciting hands-on children’s activities. On Saturday, June 25, between 11am and 4pm, drop by the station and watch the blacksmith working on his forge creating metal works of art and have a free ride on the Blue Circle locomotive steam train. Enjoy tasty Victorian refreshments in the authentic railway station and experience just what it was like to catch a train in the 1900s. Meanwhile, down the High Street at Rushden Museum, children can make a traditional peg doll and dress up to take a Victorian selfie! They can even have a go at the children’s chores of that era, such as polishing the brass and emptying the chamber pot. There will also be a ‘Looking into The Past’ photographic exhibition celebrating the past and present of the town’s High Street. You can liven up your walk between the Museum and the Station by becoming a detective with the Rushden High Street Quiz. Identify the shop, find the clue in the window and find out what the shop was in 1901. From June 18, people can pick up a free copy of the quiz from the Museum, the Station, Mrs B’s, Osbornes’ or the library. They should take their completed quiz to Rushden Museum or the Station on June 25. And for the slightly darker side of Victorian Rushden, join Jack the Ripper expert and Lecturer in the History of Crime at Northampton University, Dr Drew Gray. Drew will be leading two evening walks exploring Rusden’s past through its criminal activity, the first taking place on Thursday, June 23, then repeated on June 30, at 7pm. Places are limited, so book in advance on 01933 625527.

MANOR School Sports College was delighted to have been chosen as one of the schools to take part in the national Rocket Science project. The project involves sowing rocket seeds which have spent six months on board the International Space Station. Two kilograms of rocket (Eruca sativa) seeds were launched on Soyuz 44S on 2 September 2015 with European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Andreas Mogensen and his crew, arriving on the International Space Station (ISS) two days later. British ESA astronaut Tim Peake looked after the seeds while on the ISS for his Principia mission and after being held for about six months in microgravity, the seeds were returned to Earth with astronaut Scott Kelly in March. Manor School received 100 seeds which have been on the ISS and 100 seeds that have remained on Earth. The class will take nine measurements over 35 days collecting data as instructed on germination, growth, leaf count and plant height at frequent intervals. Once all the national data has been collected, the results will be analysed by professional statisticians.

THE annual year 6 inter schools quiz recently took place at Park Road Baptist Church. This was the eighth year for this event which is now established as a firm favourite in the Youth Services programme for the Club. Schools taking part this year were the five junior/primary schools in Rushden - Alfred Street Junior Denfield Park Primary Risdene Academy,South End Junior and Whitefriars Junior A good number of parents and teachers were in attendance to support the competing teams, Which were made up of four students from Year 6 from each school. They reported that the senior section produced some brilliant musicians ‘worthy of professional quality!’ The three Rushden entries did very well and were congratulated for reaching the final stage. Whitefriars Junior Samba Band performed very well looking good in their school uniforms but were beaten by Somersham School Band. Dana Millington again gave a top performance on the Clarinet but was beaten by a trombone player and a saxophone performance who as the other finalists put in absolutely fantastic performances according to Mike. However Ellie McAspurn, in the 11 to 13 years vocal section, was a splendid winner beating two very competent fellow finalists.

THESE students were studying hard on a recent trip to Warwick University. The group of four Year 8 students from Huxlow Science College travelled to the university to take part in the Salters Festival of Chemistry. After a mini tour of the campus (because Mrs Channell got lost! they had an introduction to the day from Professor Wills. They arrived at the newly refurbished chemistry department where they had their own set of equipment laid out and two Salters Challenges to carry out. They were judged on team work, safe working and obviously the correct answer. In addition the ‘judges’ wandered around observing and asking the team questions. After lunch they competed in the University Challenge where they had to mix chemicals in order to make the temperature drop to 10.5°C in one minute in front of the University judges. After an exhausting day in the lab they were rewarded with a stimulating and exciting ‘Chemical Magic’ demonstration given by one of the University’s Professors followed by a prizegiving for the winning schools. Much to their surprise they were awarded third prize for the Salters Challenge so well done to J Michniowska, M Lawrence, W Hall and I Mokogwa.

The Salters’ Festivals of Chemistry are run by The Salters’ Institute, a charity which works to promote the appreciation of Chemistry and related sciences among the young, and to encourage careers in the UK chemical and allied industries and in the teaching of Chemistry. The Festivals are one-day events held at universities throughout the UK and Ireland. They provide an opportunity for enthusiastic young students to spend a day in a university laboratory and to take part in fun practical chemistry activities. Meanwhile, the Huxlow College has launched a scheme to help students suffering from stress. Year 11, 12 and 13 students were privileged to be involved in an ‘Exam Stress’ workshop led by Caroline Prout, a clinical hypnotherapist. The purpose of the workshop was to help students understand how the brain works and is affected by stress, in order that they can use this knowledge to take back control when they begin to feel stressed. As well as giving a detailed but accessible account of the workings of the human brain. Caroline talked to students about strategies and techniques they can use themselves at any time during the exam period and beyond.

Here’s hoping for something better

I REALLY enjoyed Graham Chilton’s article in last month’s Reporter. It’s not just your brain that is being messed up. The common market was probably a good idea in the beginning, but now it has turned into a huge group of separate countries being ruled by just two. My thoughts are that we fought two world wars, won both, but now we are being told by Germany (beaten twice), France (saved twice) what we can and can’t do, eat, think and feel. Mrs Merkel has done what Hitler failed to do, without firing a shot. Here’s hoping something will sorted out for the better. Thank you for your words. Eileen Maddison, Rushden

I AM writing in response to the letter by a 'concerned Rushden resident' with regard to litter on our highways. I know exactly you feel! Over the winter I have watched the litter problem get worse on the A45 from Rushden to Northampton. It made me so angry I decided to write to the Secretary of State for the Environment. Eventually I received a letter stating all the Departments responsible for clearing litter from our roadsides. Main stretches of the U.K, are covered by the Highways Agency, The A45 and A14 are the responsibility of local District Councils. Are our local authorities not aware how dreadful the roadsides are?

EDITORIAL: nick@rosettapublishing.com

Why is it not tackled in the winter when you can see it? Thank goodness the grass is growing covering up some of the mess but it is STILL THERE! THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED. This is not a new problem it has been going on for years. It is quite apparent they are not up to the task. Perhaps if they were fined it would make a difference. What will happen when 'Lakeside' is finally completed. Hopefully the litter will be cleared and visitors will say 'Northamptonshire is a lovely County. It used to be a lovely county but I am afraid I am no longer proud to say I live there. Susan Allen, Higham Ferrers

IN MY OPINION by Ander Mercer

EVER since the Rushden Lakes scheme was first suggested, local residents have been asking for a cinema on the site. The first plans that the developer (LxB) produced were for a mixture of retail, leisure and wildlife reserve, but with no cinema. Those plans were opposed by the neighbouring boroughs (not Wellingborough) and the companies running their town centres. After a very long battle and a public enquiry (which cost about £1million), the plans were finally approved. Work started upon those plans late last year, and today the diggers are hard at work on-site. However, LxB hadn’t forgotten the original requests for a cinema and last Autumn, they went back to East Northamptonshire Council with a new scheme. It proposed not one cinema, but LITTLE Lacey Gallagher was all 12! The scheme also included a smiles when she won a school award – bowling alley and eight lakeside make sure you send us your snaps too! restaurants, bringing the total at

In April, the plans came before ENC’s Planning Management Committee. The councillors carefully considered each objection and dismissed it. For example, Bedford objected on the grounds that it

would compete with a new Cineworld being built there. However, Cineworld will also operate the cinemas at Rushden Lakes. If Cineworld are happy to run both multiplexes, there cannot be much overlap can there? At the end of the debate, the committee voted unanimously to approve the Rushden Lakes cinema complex.

THE sun was shining as people flocked to the Mayor’s extravanganza in Raunds. This year Raunds Mayor, Cllr Helen Howell, hosted the annual Mayor's Show in aid of the Fire Fighters Charity at Bassfords Recreation Ground, last month. The aim of the event was to bring a country show to Raunds, with rides, attractions, a cake baking and flower arranging competition, a variety of stalls, a stage and arena with demonstrations and live entertainment throughout the day, as well as fun and games for children to enter. The next event from the council is a celebration for the Queens 90th birthday. The event takes place at Bassfords Recreation Ground on Saturday, (June 11), from 3pm to 6pm. The townspeople of Raunds have already shown their eagerness to celebrate the Queens 90th birthday with a great turnout for the lighting of the beacon. This event builds on that success and gives local people the opportunity to show their appreciation for our Queen in an informal setting. The Mayor of Raunds, Cllr Helen Howell said “As well as celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday it’s another great opportunity for the community in Raunds to come together. We have such fantastic community spirit here in Raunds we just know the event is bound to be a success”. Everyone is welcome to come along to Bassfords Recreation with their picnic to enjoy the fun, there will be plenty of live acts performing throughout the afternoon, including local bands.

Young scouts so inspired by charity visit they launched fundraising push to help raise money for disaster areas

AFTER a visit from disaster relief charity ‘Shelterbox’ during a weekly meet of the 1st Higham Ferrers Scout group, the Scouts and Explorers were inspired to raise funds for the cause. One aspect of aid that Shelterbox provides are aid boxes containing items required by those who have suffered disaster, such as relief tents, cooking items, mosquito nets and water purification tablets. Each box costs £500 and the Scouts aim was to raise enough funds to purchase two of these.

Free

So, last month, a group of Scouts and Explorers from 1st Higham Ferrers Scout group raised sponsorship to sleep without shelter in the grounds of Chichele Gardens based in Higham Ferrers. Several local businesses also pledged their support through sponsorship or food donations. After a BBQ at Stanwick Lakes the group hiked to the gardens and found their patch for the night. It was a long night but a great success with the final fundraising total still to follow.

International film hit was not all plain sailing

18 — REPORTER #2 JUNE 2016

by Roy York Irthlingborough Historical Society HAVING been launched with unprecedented publicity The Battle of Waterloo filmed in Irthlingborough in June, 1913 was certainly a success, both nationally and internationally. However, soon after the film had been released, a certain Fred Evans was walking past a cinema screening what was advertised as the British & Colonial super production ‘The Battle of Waterloo’ made in Irthlingborough. Brothers Fred and Joe Evans were already veterans of film comedy and they wasted no time in exploiting all this attention, and managed to release their parody of the film, Pimples’ Battle of Waterloo, later that same month. Their film poked fun at the high production costs of the Battle of Waterloo by being very obviously made as cheap as possible and using classic music-hall and pantomime stagecraft and gags. Fred Evans, aka Pimple, played Napoleon in the famous scenes from his life – including crossing the (cardboard!) Alps on a pantomime horse. There is an attempt on his life by suffragettes on the way to Paris (via Waterloo Station!) and the noble General’s taking the watch from the sleeping sentry (who of course thinks he is trying to nick his

rifle). At the battle, Napoleon (Fred Evans) and Wellington (Joe Evans) toss a coin for the first shot. The French, realising they have forgotten the ammunition go off to the shops to buy some cannon balls, on sale at 3 for a penny! A troop of Boy Scouts looking for a way to be of assistance, as Boy Scouts traditionally have, charge at Napoleon, who, after a chaotic battle, surrenders. He is taken prisoner and sent off in a boat, saying goodbye to France for ever, represented by a cardboard sign saying France on one side of the Thames. The Battle of Waterloo was the forerunner of several pictures for which scenes were shot in and around Irthlingborough. There was The Poacher’s Sweetheart, written by Cliff Warren of Irthlingborough, a stirring tale of villainy at the Manor, lost marriage lines, bolting horses, secret love affairs and a foul plot to hang the hero for a murder of which he was innocent. An old mill at Ringstead featured in the film – the villain imprisoned the heroine there, but she escaped and swam the Nene, rushed to the courthouse on a new fangled motor bike with sidecar, saved the hero from the black cap and arranged the downfall of the villain. Other films included The Life of Queen Victoria, Through the Clouds, The Seventh Day and Called to the Front – not well edited

apparently as a dead man was seen to wake up and light a fag! In spite of this aberration Called to the Front was shown in Canada, Britain and on the Continent. Despite its rather lavish scenes it was described as a rather boring film. After the resounding success of the Battle of Waterloo the Regent Film Company arrived in Irthlingborough in 1914 to produce a military epic and engaged over 100 local men as extras – presumably at the aforementioned fee. However, considerable indignation was aroused because many residents objected to the ‘sham’ fighting of pretend soldiers when real soldiers, some of them mere boys from this village, were in France fighting a real war. The producers compromised. Although the filming would go ahead, they ordered that there was to be no firing of guns during any filming on Sundays – all would be quiet that day. That, strangely enough, was enough to placate the locals. No further films were made in Irthlingborough after 1914 – with the problems of war in Europe, objections from local people and potential extras enlisting for the Services, the film makers looked for an alternative location – and they decided set up shop across the Atlantic – and the rest, as they say, is history..

Thrilling win tinged with sadness after death of stalwart

RAIDERS celebrated the club’s 30th season by winning the Northants Volleyball Association Mens league. It was a great achievement. They secured the title with a thrilling 3-1 win over last year’s winners Falcons. However the club’s celebrations were smashed by devastating news that former player Geoff Miles collapsed and died. Geoff played for the club for nearly 10 years and was a corner-

stone of the team during the purple patch of the late 2000’s when the club won back to back league and cup titles. He came to the club originally looking for a place where his children Christian and Hanna could learn to play. He enjoyed the club so much he stayed. Tom Murts draw against Mick Buswell followed by a win for Richard Ellis against Nigel Turner put Rushden back in the match. James was looking in all sorts of problems with the endgame going against him when he managed by some miracle to turn the game for a magnificent victory thus ensuring a draw for Rushden.

Rushden B were looking for a result against Chess Mates A after a difficult season in the top division. They had a poor start with losses on boards four and five. Phil Campbell on board 3 built a strong opening position against Northampton’s Dave Curran. He was finally rewarded going a Bishop ahead and with his Queen and Bishop working as a team Curran threw in the towel. Bob Ellam’s and Jefta Jawi’s game ended in a draw. A win on board one was needed to avoid defeat and this was duly delivered when Richard Ellis managed to get a pawn advantage making promotion inevitable. out & about Castaway on Soul! by Jem Brittin

Friday 24th June is the date for the annual ‘Castaways Reunion Soul Night’ which is held at The Soul Junction, Stanwick Hotel.

People from both sides of the Bedfordshire/Northants border will remember the legendary Soul Nights held at the original Castaways Club, on the A6 (Souldrop turn) South of Rushden back in the 70s & 80s. Here’s your chance to relive those memories and meet up with some faces from the past. Louise Austin from Groove on Promotions the co promoters of the reunion night explained that this will be the third running of the event. Originally it was meant to be just a one off night; however the first one proved so popular it quickly sold out, leaving some people disappointed. A second one was held and that sold out as well! So we took the decision to make this a yearly fixture on the calendar now. Some of the original DJ’s that performed at The Castaways will be behind the ‘Wheels of Steel’ on the night,

including ‘Brother’ Louie Martin & Rob James along with supporting DJ’s playing Soul, Funk & Weekender Anthems from the period. As mentioned they are great nights, many past attendees have commented that they met up with people they hadn’t seen in years! The ‘Soul Junction’ Stanwick Hotel’ is the perfect venue for the event, it’s even the same colour as the original Castaways building (white) It’s held in the fantastic ‘Reflections’ function room, which has a superb wooden dance floor and French doors that lead directly onto a large patio area with seating and tables. So if the summer behaves itself and you have worked up a sweat on the dance floor, you can chill out and cool down outside. Tickets are on sale and as we go to press are still available at £8 each but don’t leave it too late folks! You

can purchase tickets direct online visit: www.grooveonpromotions. co.uk or call/text hotline numbers 07905 028 003 or 07976 324 378. One of the founding fathers of the Kettering and wider UK Soul Scene Glenn Bellamy will be joining me in the evening to spin a few tunes. These nights are held twice a year and are always very busy with people really entering into the spirit of the decade by donning their 80s attire, so always plenty of Madonna and Adam Ant lookalikes on view and having fun! You can see where this is going folks I suppose, well Maddie has a very busy tour schedule in and around the London area this year, so it was no surprise that she was booked out on the night planned. However a late cancellation meant the promoters at The Stanwick Hotel got the call from her agent and hey presto the event came

together. They say good things come to those who wait! This promises to be a fantastic night folks, certainly not one to be missed if you love your 80s music. Tickets are on sale at £8 each and already selling fast you can reserve them by calling 07905 028 003. If you’re quick you can also reserve tables as well at no extra cost!
