GETTING FIREARMS OFF THE STREETS

GUNS including a US Carbine .30, a Browning Mod 8mm, a Cobra starting pistol and Mauser pistol, as well as ammunition, have already been handed in during the first few days of a firearms surrender. The surrender aims to encourage people to hand in any firearms which may be in their possession. During one pre-arranged collection of firearms, five guns, (pictured), were handed in by a woman whose father had passed away several years ago and had owned the guns. They had only been discovered in the loft recently after a house clear-out. During the campaign, the public are being asked to call police on 101 to arrange an appointment at their convenience and at a location of their choice, to have officers come and collect the firearm. Many firearms are held in innocence and ignorance of their illegality or are overlooked and forgotten in people’s homes. Others are acquired and distributed by criminal networks to threaten or harm their local communities. The surrender gives the opportunity to dispose of a firearm or ammunition by simply arranging for an officer to collect it. During the campaign period, those handing over firearms will not face prosecution for illegal possession - at the point of surrender and can remain anonymous if they choose to.

The firearms may, however, be forensically examined to see if they have any links to other crimes. Illegal possession of a firearm can mean five years behind bars and if you are found guilty of possession with intent to supply that can lead to a life sentence. Head of operations at Northamptonshire Police, Supt Sarah Johnson, said: “I’m pleased people are getting the message and have already started handing in items so that they can be disposed of appropriately. “I would continue to remind people of the surrender and encourage anyone, who has weapons which they no longer need or have discovered, to call 101 and arrange for their collection. “I would also appeal to those people who may be friends, family members, or partners of criminals, who may have been asked to conceal firearms. “These people may believe they won’t be arrested or prosecuted because it’s not their gun. “This is not the case”. She said if anyone is caught in possession of a firearm, they could be jailed for a minimum of five years.”

Thousands of children living in poverty MORE than 46,000 children are living in poverty in Northamptonshire. The shock figures, published by the End Child Poverty coalition, highlights how worrying levels of child poverty vary across Britain and shows poverty is on the rise - and rising fastest in places where it is already highest. Chairman of the End Child Poverty coalition, Anna Feuchtwang said: “We know what causes child poverty and we know how to end it. “We know that the income of less well-off fam-

ilies has been hit by severe real-terms cuts in benefits and by higher housing costs. “And we know work alone does not guarantee a route out of poverty, with two thirds of child poverty occurring in working families.” Rachel McGrath, of Northamptonshire Food Poverty Network, said: “Northamptonshire Food Poverty Network is campaigning on issues related to child poverty locally most recently supporting activities through our network addressing holiday hunger and provision of activities during school

holidays. “However it is clear there is a lack of a credible child poverty-reduction strategy and this must urgently be addressed. “It is not the responsibility of local charities to keep on plugging the gaps where the system is failing.” End Child Poverty is calling for Government to set out an ambitious and credible child povertyreduction strategy, including: Restoring the link between benefits, (including

A spokesman for Canine Partners said: “I would like to thank Raunds garage sale for the opportunity to raise funds for Canine Partners, a wonderful charity which trains dogs to help people in wheelchairs, transforming their lives. “This year we had already made £290 in pre-sales and on the day took a further £375 from all those generous people who visited us in Mallows Drive and gave us their support, making a running total of £665. “I just want to say a big thankyou to everyone involved. “We still have monies to come from promised sales and we are confident that our total will grow to £700 - see you next year.”

Students look to their future STUDENTS from all the The East Northamptonshire College schools, (TENC), in Rushden, Higham Ferrers, and Irthlingborough spent a week thinking about their futures. To start the week and give students a real insight into the world of work, all were given the opportunity of up to three days’ work placement in a relevant and meaningful context. They also visited the Universities Conference at Bedford University, which provided a unique opportunity for them– and anyone supporting them – to explore the wide range of options available after school, all in one setting. Whether they were interested in applying to university or looking at alternative pathways, they all found something which interested them. The week culminated in the TENC Futures’ Conference where students were treated to an amazing range of speakers from a whole range of different career pathways. Keynote speaker was Kevin

Rogers from Wilson Browne Solicitors. He gave an insightful look at his experience in studying law and becoming a solicitor, not that it was an easy journey. Students also heard from people who have forged paths into teaching, medicine, sport’s journalism, the Army, business ownership, marketing, and the civil service. In a separate event, Sixth Form Induction Week saw year 11 students from across the three schools finding out more about (TENC) and the courses they have opted for next year. The aim of the week was to give students a genuine experience of life in the sixth form with lessons at all the partner schools in TENC. The week included an Induction Residential, staying in fabulous student rooms at Kent University in Canterbury where students had a real taste of life on campus. Students were treated as undergraduates and experienced all aspects of the university facilities.

From the plains of Africa to the council chamber

MEET your new council chairman - Dudley Hughes. Councillor Hughes, (pictured), was sworn in as the new chairman for East Northamptonshire Council for the civic year 2019/20, but who is the man behind the chain? We sat down with Cllr Hughes to find out about his fascinating life and what he hopes to achieve during his year in office. We hear that you have lead quite a varied life, can you tell us a little about your time before you were a councillor? “I was lucky enough to go to a school which encouraged selfreliance and confidence. “Even so when I flew to Rhodesia aged 19 it was with some trepidation. “Having been met at the airport we drove 90 miles on strip roads and then 50 miles on a dirt road out to the mission which was to be my home for nearly two years. “Apart from teaching students all of whom were older than me, I built a house, learnt about quick drying cement to build a drift across a river, assisted a young O her child in the woman to have back of an estate car on the way to the hospital, learnt enough motor mechanics to get a tractor going, and camped with the students in the Wh bush. “After three years of teacher training in the UK, I set off to Ethiopia with my new wife to work in another fantastic place, Addis Ababa. “We had horses and rode out in the bush with donkeys carrying our gear and went where few had ventured before. “In our VW Beetle, we visited the fabulous rock churches, the castles of Gondar, went to the hottest place in Africa and camped surrounded by game. “After three years, I returned to the UK on leave and bought an exarmy Land Rover which we drove with our one year old son in the back through Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Saudi. “We slept out under the stars in the Saudi desert, sat outside the mosque in Damascus, ate lunch with friendly Jordanians in their homes and drove along mountain roads in Ethiopia. “We were fortunate to meet Ethiopia’s last emperor, Haile Selassie, and attended his daughter’s wedding. “Back in the UK, I taught and studied for my Masters degree. “Then my family and I had a fantastic year teaching and travelling through America. “We’ve also travelled through Europe with our three children in the back of a VW pop top, visiting the Hungarians plains, seeing the wonders of Italy and stood in WWI trenches. “I continue to travel. “We’ve climbed Machu Picchu, marvelled at the Taj Mahal, been chased by elephants in Namibia and driven through Cuba.” Back in Northamptonshire

£

and away from your chairman duties, how do you spend your time? “Now apart from travel, we are involved in the church, I am chairman of the Nene Education Trust which oversees seven local schools, a trustee of Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust and Service Six. “I am also on the management committee for Stanwick Lakes, as well as being a county councillor and on Raunds Town Council.” As a former teacher, what were you like as a pupil at school? “At school, I enjoyed rugby and hockey, won prizes for rifle shooting, got into trouble for advertising my house master’s Armstrong Siddeley car for £250 outside the school for April Fools Day, enjoyed the cadets and played the drums on the front row of the marching band. You are in quite a unique position in that you were previously council chairman from 2008 to 2009. Do you think the role has changed? “The role has changed over the last decade which means there are fewer opportunities to get out and about attending civic events. “These events always provide a great opportunity to see first hand the fantastic work being carried out across the district and further afield. “But across the next year, I hope I can still get out as much as possible.” What do you hope to achieve in your year in office? “In my year as chairman I would like to meet and visit as many people and places in East Northamptonshire, alongside representing all the good things the council is doing.” Finally, what stories from your life do you tell your grandchildren about? “I tell them about Africa, America, camping with the scouts, great times on holiday together in the VW, sunsets over the African bush, building a house in Cyprus and meeting interesting people. “I would also tell them that you often make your own luck by persistence and effort.” To find out what Cllr Hughes is up to, visit www.east-northamptonshire.gov.uk/chairmansdiary and follow him on Twitter @ENCChairman

Mural inspired by town’s history

A NEW mural commemorating the history of Rushden and the surrounding area has been officially opened by schoolchildren during a ceremony hosted by East Northamptonshire Council. Based on children’s artwork, and adorning the Washbrook Road tunnel, the new mural has been designed to reflect the history and natural environment of the local

area and has transformed the tunnel. The completion of the tunnel artwork is the latest phase in the Out to Water, Into History project and the event also celebrated the hard working volunteers who continuously give up their time, alongside everything which has been achieved so far along the Greenway.

Boost to mental health facilities

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE NHS Foundation Trust, (NHFT), has invested in the Rushden Resource Centre, refurbishing part of the building to enable local residents to have access to community mental health services. The centre is located at the heart of the community in Rushden and benefits from having East Northamptonshire Council services, including customer services and a library, alongside NHS services. Together with existing facilities provided by the Council, the mental health resource centre will allow for an increased presence in Rushden and reduce barriers to mental health services for patients and carers in the local area. Operational mManager for NHFT Katie Bates said: “The project has been in the pipeline for some time and throughout we have worked with our staff, service users and carers in the careful design of the environment. “This has ensured that the centre is dementia friendly and a calm, pleasant environment in which

to receive care and treatment, as well as futureproofed for further growth.” “Currently, the services we are operating from the centre include the Older Adults Community Mental Health team, the Memory Assessment Service and the Younger Person with Dementia team. “Following a successful launch, we are now looking at which other services we can also provide in Rushden and hope to continue to grow the centre.” The centre was officially opened by The Rev Richard Coles and during the opening ceremony NHFT chairman Chrishni Waring said: “This is a great opportunity for us to maximise the use of the public estate to deliver on our commitment to outstanding locally-based healthcare. “The new resource centre will bring a range of services under one roof in a dedicated facility, improving our ability to join up the care we provide to our patients and service users.” The new facilities are located at the Rushden Resource Centre, Newton Road, Rushden, and are open to 5pm, Mondays to Fridays.

Taking on the dragons ENTER the dragon’s den! East Northamptonshire’s finest young business brains put their skills to the test at the final of the 13th Business Dragons event, hosted by East Northamptonshire Council. The competition held last month and organised by The East Northamptonshire College saw teams of young entrepreneurs from local schools - The Ferrers School, Higham Ferrers, Huxlow Science College, Irthlingborough, Manor School Sports College, Raunds, and Rushden Academy pitch their ideas and excellent business plans to a panel of local business dragons. The ‘dragons’ included Peter Waddup, (director of The Leprosy Mission), Nikki Roberts, (manager of The Pavillion Youth Club), Helen Featherstone, (careers consultant and business owner) and Emily Carrington, (head of family law at Franklins Solicitors). The final, which was held at the council offices, gave the students the opportunity to present their original business ideas to the panel, having considered the design of the product, finance, staffing, manufacture, competition and profitability. Each team was then quizzed by the dragons on the benefit and effectiveness of their ideas, before a winner was announced. The winning team trophy, supplied by East Northamptonshire Council, and presented by the chairman of the council, Dudley Hughes, went to

Huxlow Science Academy. The team designed an app, called ‘Huver’, which lists all the available cleaning services in an area. The aim is to have all the best options for cleaning in one space and those using the app can then compare the best deals, allowing for increased efficiency. Rushden Academy was the runner-up - its team produced a new adult and children’s version of the classic Tic Tac Toe game which featured prizes for winners and challenges for those who lost. Third place was awarded to another team from Huxlow Science Academy, which created a radio frequency identification for clothing and items. If lost, they can be identified through scanning of the tag using a smart-phone app and returned to the rightful owner. During the event, Councillor Hughes praised the work and ideas of all the teams involved in this year’s event. He said: It is important young minds are encouraged to develop their ideas and acquire the business skills and knowledge that lead to being a successful entrepreneur. "East Northamptonshire Council is pleased to host this year’s Business Dragons competition and, as previously, the standard of entries was brilliant and it is always great to see such young minds thinking of ideas that could change all of our lives. “Well done to everyone who took part and we look forward to seeing these young people further develop their ideas.”

New man at the helm Region gets multi-mullion pound health boost

JULY was the start of the new Thrapston and Raunds Rotary year and having been thanked for his excellent year as President, Robert Howe has handed over to Bob Davey who is the new President for 2019-20. Mr Davey has in mind an ambitious range of activities including a number of community projects. continue to support Sailability, (sailing for people with disabilities), at Grafham Water, and he plans a number of fun fund raising events. He also expects Rotary will continue to have enjoyable social events and an interesting range of speakers at our meetings. Lastly, he has made clear he is very keen to increase Rotary membership at individual, associate and corporate level. Anyone interested in finding out more about Rotary can contact 01933 625642.

AN organisation committed to improving the health and well-being of the Northamptonshire by speeding up the adoption of research and innovation into frontline health and care practice will continue for another five years after being awarded £9m. The funding from the Government’s Department of Health and Social Care will enable more vital work to take place to tackle the region’s health and care priorities, putting in place more evidenced-based frameworks to drive up standards of care and save time and money. The Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care, East Midlands, was formed in 2014 and thanks to the new funding it will continue until at least 2024. It is a partnership of health and social care universities, industry, the voluntary sector and patients which sets out to improve patient outcomes by turning research into cost-saving and high-quality care through cutting-edge innovation. With bases at the University of Nottingham and University of Leicester, it will continue under the new name of NIHR Applied Research Collaborations, (ARC) East Midlands, from October 1 and will also have a remit to lead

nationally on research into black and minority ethnic communities and multimorbidity thanks to its expertise in these areas. ARC East Midlands will be hosted by Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and work in collaboration with the East Midlands Academic Health Science Network. There will also be a significant match funding from partners, including the University of Leicester and University of Nottingham, from across the region to support the organisation. Professor Kamlesh Khunti, who is the director of the NIHR CLAHRC East Midlands and is also a Professor of Primary Care, Diabetes and Vascular Medicine at the University of Leicester, said: “Receiving this funding means we can continue to lead world class, applied health research across the East Midlands and build on the successes we have already achieved in speeding up the adoption of research and innovation into frontline health and care. “We are also proud to be leading nationally on multimorbidity and equality, diversity and inclusion of underrepresented groups, areas where we have dedicated expertise and a track record in delivering cutting-edge research. “We have a strong pedigree in research on

multimorbidity in particular cardiometabolic disease and have established the Centre for BME Health, where our work has been helping to reduce health inequalities. “We will share our knowledge nationally and collaborate with colleagues as we all collectively work towards improving the lives of people through research.” Work carried out by NIHR CLAHRC East Midlands includes helping to prevent type 2 diabetes by embedding an education programme designed to help people avoid the condition. The project has provided learning which has been used in the bidding process, refinement and implementation of the National Diabetes Prevention Programme in the East Midlands. In April last year, the organisation also continued to support the rollout of a risk score for type 2 diabetes in South Asian languages with the release of a Punjabi version following Gujarati and Bangladeshi versions. Other successes include implementing and assessing an online tool that assists diagnosing children with ADHD, which initial evaluation shows that it can lower NHS costs by 22 per cent and also reduces delays to diagnosis of the condition by average of 145 days.

Longhurst Group, which has one of its main offices in Rushden, has been ranked 42nd in this year’s list, which is compiled by 24housing magazine to recognise the best social housing landlords across the sector. Hundreds of entries had been submitted for the list this year. Judges recognised the group’s position as a leading developer and provider of a range of care and support services across more than 23,000 homes in the Midlands and East of England. In the last year alone, the Group’s in-house academy has generated over £200,000 worth of social value and delivered more than 100 life-changing qualifications to customers. More than 4,000 people receive a range of quality care and support services, while during the last year, its Money Advice Service supported more than 750 customers to boost their finances by almost £1m. Chief executive of Longhurst Group Julie Doyle said: “We are delighted to have been included in this list by both our peers and the judging panel. “To be ranked in the top 50 social housing landlords highlights our significant progression as an organisation. “Following the group’s consolidation and the launch of our 2025 Improving Lives strategy, we are confident we will continue to improve the services we provide to customers and carry on improving as a landlord. “Everything we do as an

organisation is about improving people’s lives and this ranking, coupled with our ambitious building programme for 2019/20, shows we are focused on continuing to enhance the well-being of our customers, in particular their physical, mental and financial health. “I would also like to pay tribute to all colleagues who work for the group and thank them for their continued hard work which has helped us achieve this positive ranking.” In January, the group was announced as a strategic partner with Homes England, which saw it receive an additional £71.7m to support its ambition to deliver at least 1,000 homes a year. Meanwhile, during 2017/18, the group invested £17m in the maintenance and improvement of its existing homes. Longhurst Group has recently consolidated the four member companies that used to make up the group, citing benefits such as simplifying its structure, improving efficiency and enhancing the service the group provides customers. One of the UK's leading developers, Longhurst Group was also rated in the top 25 of Inside Housing's Biggest Builders survey 2019. It owns and manages properties in almost 50 local authorities, including the following areas, Birmingham, Boston, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Peterborough, Rutland, Staffordshire, Walsall, Warwickshire. School receives cash boost MANOR School Sports College in Raunds has been awarded a grant for £250 towards a new STEM research project. The STEM Exploration Grants have been created by the STEM Clubs Programme to assist schools and colleges to cultivate a sustainable STEM, (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), project in collaboration with a STEM partner. The grant can be used for purchasing equipment, supporting idea development and the provision of training related to the demands of the project. The school applied for the grant earlier this year to help set up a STEM club looking at how robotics can be used to improve crop yields in farming, with a particular focus on what farming will look like in 50 years’ time. The school intends to partner with a local farm to see how different technologies are currently being utilised.

They also plan to visit some of the companies which design and supply automation solutions to businesses. Students will plan a project around the topic of smart farming and then create a product based on their findings. Eliza Wilford, the ICT teacher who applied for the grant, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for students to work on a project within the community and develop their skills across a range of STEM subjects. We are looking forward to seeing what ideas the students come up with.”

Town takes a step back in time HIGHAM Ferrers went back to its medieval roots to celebrate the restoration and return of its Charters thanks to Heritage Lottery funding. Beginning in the Town Hall for a Mayor’s civic breakfast and on to the Bede House to view an exhibition of the Charters, to include framed copies of the town’s, rarely seen, five Charters and accompanying interpretations, beginning with Philip and Mary, (1556), James 1, (1604), Charles 11, (1664 and 1684), and finally Queen Victoria, (1886). Being premiered was the film by the pupils of Higham Ferrers Junior School showing a history of the Charters and promoting the heritage of the town. Also, the life of Henry Chichele was displayed in fabric and thread by the Material Girls for all to see. The procession then moved to the Castle Field to officially open the event within the arena which later featured skirmishes and battles. Surrounding the field, a medieval encampment encouraged visitors to watch and have a go at archery, leather and chainmail working, spinning and weaving and children’s games. Within the grounds of Chichele College, a Chapel Tent reflected its holy origins when secular canons were resident. As well as finding out about life as a medieval knight, there were demonstrations of cooking, knights and combat and a barber surgeon. On the hottest day of the year to date, medieval cocktails namely Monk’s Ruin and Chichele Gin Fizz were well received. In the cool of the building Higham Ferrers Archaeology and Research Society displayed more treasures of the town accompanied by model castles made by local school children.

Also, within Chichele College visitors could treat themselves to the wonderful new book, Higham Ferrers 1251-1914: A portrait of the Town and its people through its historic charters. There was plenty to see and do throughout the day across the town with tempting offerings at the Farmers Market and Little Castle Fields. The Mayor and his Sergeant returned to the market at midday where tythes were collected for the royal purse as befitted the tradition. Regular tours of the church were conducted and many made their way back to St. Mary’s Church for a concert of madrigals sung beautifully by the Bedford Chamber Choir. Medieval minstrels played music throughout the day and the Scriptorium showed the fascinating and complex process of crafting charters and manuscripts. Many returned much better informed to dip into the exhibition once again and enjoy the refreshments and the friendly social buzz. At 4pm, the highlight at Castle Fields was the Medieval Battle attracting a rousing crowd. Finally, at an enchanting Medieval Evensong, often called vespers, the congregation prayed for rest and peace for the night. This beautiful and reflective service, when candles were lit and thanksgiving was made for the day served as the perfect end to a very special event. Mayor Chris O’Rourke, said: “It was wonderful to be part of the activities and ceremony of the day and to join with the people of the town as they celebrated their charters and their heritage. “ Another precious memory to be treasured in the archives of Higham Ferrers.”

Charity receives funding pledge

A CHARITY which supports young people in the area will receive additional funding over the next year as East Northamptonshire Council’s new chairman, Cllr Dudley Hughes, chose Service Six as his charity of the year for 2019/2020. The local charity, founded in 1979, is based in Northamptonshire and works with hundreds of hard to reach disadvantaged children, young people, adults and families each year. It is hoped this additional funding will allow the charity to further grow, develop its presence across the district and offer much needed support for vulnerable individuals. Service Six’s chief executive Claudia Slabon said: “We are delighted East Northamptonshire Council’s new Chairman Dudley Hughes has chosen us as his charity for the year. “We are very excited to have this opportunity to unite our teams behind a worthwhile cause that everyone can identify with, feel passionate about and to continue working with the council to make a difference in our communities.” “We look forward to embedding our partnership with the council within our organisational culture to deliv-

er beneficial results with a lasting legacy, to change lives and create futures for the young people of Northamptonshire.” Councillor Hughes said: “I have worked with the wonderful team at Service Six for many years, as nominated observer on the board of trustees, and have seen first hand the great work they do in the local community. “As a former teacher, the work the charity does is very close to my heart and I hope over the next year we can raise lots of money, so that the good work Service Six does can continue.” Over the next 12 months, Cllr Hughes has lots of fundraising events planned. They start with a dinner dance on Friday, September 27, with all funds raised on the night going straight to Service Six.

Looking forward to the opportunity to proudly exhibit their latest work, this artistic duo have put together an exciting and eclectic portfolio of art, ranging from Marlene’s colourful watercolours, experimental mixed media work and delicate Chinese brush paintings ,through to Tamsin’s quirky illustrations, atmospheric scenes and imaginative fantasy pictures. Retired professional art tutor Marlene is greatly enjoying having the time to pursue her passion of experimenting with new mediums and styles, drawing on her past experiences and many

skills to create rich and exciting artworks. An Illustrator already of several books, Tamsin is currently working on creating a series of humorous images to illustrate a French language book, which is hoped to be published in the coming year. She also finds great satisfaction indulging in her passion of depicting quirky, rather unique and imaginative works. The historic ‘English Heritage’ college and medieval garden will be open FREE of charge between 9am-5pm on Saturday 31st August and 10am-4pm on Sunday 1st September 2019. Disabled access is limited to the ground floor and gardens, and alas there is no onsite parking. There are however nearby FREE car parks and on-street spaces to the rear of the college in Saffron Road. As an added attraction to the town, Higham Ferrers will be enjoying a large ‘Farmers Market’ in the morning, complimenting the many interesting independent shops. All visitors are most welcome.

RUSHDEN strongman Tony Clegg is taking part in a charity to train pull and has appealed for sponsors. He has set up a JustGiving page in an attempt to raise funds for the The Lucy Rayner Foundation. Last year, the ‘Big Pull’ saw trucks ranging from 12.5 tons up to 45 tons tackled by 23 Participants, with more than 200 watching the event and helping to raise nearly £7,000. The aim this year is to raise money for the charity, which helps to raise awareness for mental health issues and depression in young adults. The charity aims to promote and raise awareness of the physical and mental health of persons suffering from depression, in particular, but not exclusively young adults,

It also aims to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of depression in young adults and to work alongside other charitable organisations which have the same objectives as foundation. It will take place at Finmere Station, MK18 4AU. Other activities on the day will include childrens’ games, face painting, hot and cold food, a bouncy castle and a raffle. It all takes place on Saturday, August 31, and entry is £2 for adults, with free admission for children. Details of Mr Clegg’s fundraising page is at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/antony-clegg You can find out more about the foundation itself by visiting thelucyraynerfoundation.com website.
