Hate shopping but love clothes? There’s a new boutique just for you

TEL: 07894 935952 or 07724 905406

EDITORIAL: nick@rosettapublishing.com

A love of beautiful clothes and a three-stone weight loss saw Helen Dawson begin a local business in the fashion industry. And if you hate shopping but love clothes, let The AmbaScarlett Boutique bring designer fashion to you. Helen said: “After reaching my target weight, I realised that none of the clothes in my wardrobe fitted. I know the stereotype is that women love shopping, but I hate it!” The AmbaScarlett Boutique was aimed at women who love nice clothes but hate shopping. The aim of the ‘shop’ is to take clothes into women’s homes, for them to try on and feel the quality. Helen has a rail of samples in various sizes (six-22) plus catalogues, so women can relax in the comfort of their own home while deciding what to buy, with no pressure from pushy sales assistants.

Helen, who is based in Thrapston but operates across East Northamptonshire, including Rushden and Higham Ferrers, said: “I find most women now actually dislike wandering round the shops, we all have busy lives and no one has hours to waste, plus trying on in your home and not in a horrid communal changing room is really nice too.” The clothes are from a French designer, and not available on the High Street or online, they are only ever presented via ‘in your own home’ shopping. Sizes start at size 6 and go up to size 22 with many colours and styles available. The AmbaScarlett spring/summer 2017 collection is imminent and bookings are being taken for February and March appointments to see the clothes, Helen can be contacted on 07799 627789 or on helen@aspengirl.co.uk to book a date for the clothes to come to you.

AN all-girl dance group represented the county at the Winterguard United Kingdom national championships last month at Stoke-on- Trent. Excelsior Performing Arts, a not for profit youth and community group based in Rushden, uses flags and other equipment to interpret contemporary music in what is known as the ‘art of movement’. Guard director Liz Warner said: “This was the group’s first contest and the girls have been working hard perfecting the show. “We have more contests in February and

March, leading to the finals to be held in Worcester in April.” She said Colour Guard is a unique art form using flags, the body, drama and dance to visually interpret music and that she had been involved since she was 10 years old. Senior director Eileen Mander said: “This is a wonderful art form and I have been involved since I was young, as has Liz, my daughter. “Although competing in this year’s circuit, even now we are planning the 2018 show so

Bob’s been a Ford dealer since the early 1970s

You can still rely on Winslow Ford We all love to reminisce thinking back to the good old days. Can you recall what you were doing in 1972… perhaps listening to Ziggy Stardust whilst sporting a funky patterned mini skirt or flares and wearing one of the first digital watches. Or maybe you remember a time when you could by a pint of beer for 14 pence, a loaf of bread for 11 pence or putting four gallons of fuel in your new Ford Cortina (which would have set you back £963) and still had change out of a £1. Some things have changed but there is still one thing you can rely on 45 years on and that’s Winslow Ford. Bob Shoemark who was Managing Director at the time, formed Winslow Ford in February 1972 with former chairman Mr Winslow. Bob who is now the company’s Dealer Principal recollects much about business in the 1970s. “There was no internet or social media back then, business was built on good reputation and word of mouth which is still as important today. We still have many customers we supply and service vehicles for today that purchased cars from us when we opened our doors in 1972”. Bob is still very hands on with the business and looks forward to the launch of new vehicles as much as ever. “1972 saw the launch of the Ford Granada and our best-selling vehicles were the Ford Escort, Mk111 Cortina, that year

we won a competition for being one of the top selling retail dealers of the Ford Capri. I myself drove a Vista Orange Ford Capri 2.0S”. Please join us to help celebrate our 45th Anniversary between 9th-12th February at our

site on Northampton Road, Rushden. We will have some familiar retro vehicles to view along with the latest Ford range, activities for all the family and refreshments. We look forward to welcoming you.

What a stink as we were forced onto buses

IN MY OPINION

By Andy Mercer

IMAGES from China show cities smothered in acrid, choking smog. A journalist said that it was so thick that he couldn’t see across his hotel lobby. Aircraft don’t reach clean air until they get to 10,000 feet. We were there once. The smog in London in December 1952 lasted just four days. officially, it killed around 4,000, but recent research suggests 12,000. London’s smog was mostly from coalfires in homes and power stations. It was far less dangerous than the diesel-fuelled cloud that covers Shanghai, Beijing, etc. The Clean Air Acts of the 1950’s solved our smog problem, but the risk of traffic fumes doing to us, what it is doing to China, drove UK transport policy for decades.

It led us all up multiple blind alleys: More vehicles means more pollution, so we must cut the number of vehicles, so we force travellers to share vehicles. So far, it seemed sensible, but there was a massive hole in the argument. It assumed that all vehicles were equal polluters. Unfortunately, policy-makers got this horribly wrong. When catalytic converters were installed in all petrol-driven cars, their pollutants essentially vanished (except for Co2, but that’s another story). By contrast, diesel vehicles continued to issue large quantities of toxic chemicals, but the policymakers either were blind or dogmatic. The worst polluters left on the roads were HGVs (including buses). Yet, we were forcing commuters out of their environmentally friendly cars and into polluting buses. It made no sense at all.

It was done for the noblest of reasons, but the results were bonkers. Rushden’s town centre is evidence of this madness. When Rushden’s ASDA was built, the approved plans included a bus lay-by in Higham Road, in front of the store. A highway officer (long since retired) was unhappy about this. He reasoned that a lay-by would let traffic get past a bus when it stops for passengers to get on/off, a lay-by would therefore mean shorter journey times through Rushden faster journeys would encourage more motorists onto the road more motorists would mean more pollution. And so, the highway officer vetoed the lay-by, and we have to live with the consequences: unnecessary traffic jams, increased journey times and EXTRA pollution. I suppose we should be grateful that he didn’t put speed bumps on the M1.

A very big thank you to kind-hearted company

The artists seen on the now famous ‘booted’ stage have ranged from Jackie oates’ soaring voice to the driving energy of the Blockheads. The programme includes the striking voices of the Askew Sisters, winners of the Spiral Earth Award for Best Traditional Album in 2015 and a Saturday Night Special with the Swing Commanders, who perform an exciting mix of boogie-woogie, western swing and 50’s jump jazz. The festival will close on the Sunday evening with folk veterans Jez Lowe and Steve Tilston who are still winning awards for their thoughtful songwriting. Comedy is represented by Les Barker (catch him while you can) and there will also be a one man performance by Robin Hillman about ‘our own’ John Clare. A CoUNTY drive to lower heart disease numbers could “radically improve” the health of people in the future.

Cardiovascular disease, (CVD), causes more than a quarter of all deaths in the UK, totalling around 160,000 each year. The 3R Programme (Ready to Reduce Risk) has been launched in the county to establish what motivates people into making lifestyle changes by using group education sessions, focused on improving health. The initiative is being carried out by NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care, (CLAHRC), East Midlands, an organisation which turns research into cost-saving and high-quality care through cutting-edge innovation. Dr Stephen Rogers, who has been a public health doctor in Northamptonshire for ten years and is the Principal Investigator of the study said: “The study investigates the likely impact of an innovative group based approach to supporting and enabling people who have a high cardiovascular risk to understand what this means and what they can do to change things.” Professor Kamlesh Khunti, who is the Chief Investigator and Director of CLAHRC East Midlands and Professor of Primary Care Diabetes and Vascular Medicine at the University of Leicester based at the Leicester Diabetes Centre, said: “The total cost of premature death, lost productivity, hospital treatment and prescriptions relating to cardiovascular disease is estimated at around £19 billion each year. “Not only that but we believe 80 per cent of premature CVD deaths are potentially avoidable, which is why we’ve been carrying out this research to see what works best. “We launched this drive to find out how we can motivate people into improving their quality of life and so far the results we’ve been collecting have been hugely positive. “We believe this study could help us to find the best course of

action for cutting down the huge impact of heart disease and could radically improve the health of people in the future.”

SEVEN MILLION AFFECTED

An estimated seven million people live with cardiovascular disease in the UK. Two trained educators have been delivering group education sessions at people who are deemed at high risk of CVD. The classes have covered the risks of heart disease and how to make lifestyle and medication changes to prevent its development. The study findings could be rolled out on a national basis in the future. The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) is funded by the Department of Health to improve the health and wealth of the nation through research. The NIHR is the research arm of the NHS. Since its establishment in April 2006, the NIHR has transformed research in the NHS. It has increased the volume of applied health research for the benefit of patients and the public, driven faster translation of basic science discoveries into tangible benefits for patients and the economy, and developed and supported the people who conduct and contribute to applied health research. The NIHR plays a key role in the Government’s strategy for economic growth, attracting investment by the life-sciences industries through its world-class infrastructure for health research. Together, the NIHR people, programmes, centres of excellence and systems represent the most integrated health research system in the world. For further information, visit http://www.nihr.ac.uk. THE Government has announced it will support work on a proposed ‘Garden Village’ at Deenethorpe Airfield. The new village, including up to 1500 homes, community facilities, shops, business premises and generous green spaces, would occupy part of the 600-acre airfield site located between the villages of Deenethorpe and Benefield to the east of Corby. The Deenethorpe Airfield project is one of 14 schemes across the country that will share £6m funding plus ongoing support from the Government’s Homes and Communities Agency. This is to help East Northamptonshire Council work with the landowner (the historic Deene Estate) in preparing a detailed masterplan and delivery strategy. It will pay for extra staff capacity, specialist advice (such as design

CoMMITTED to improving services, East Northamptonshire Council’s opening times changed from February 1. ENC will pilot opening one hour later, at 9.45am on Wednesday mornings, at the Thrapston and Rushden offices, to enable staff to undertake essential training. Head of Customer and Community Services Julia Smith said: “This council has undergone changes in recent years to ensure we provide services as efficiently and effectively as possible. “The time made available in this additional hour will help us to enhance, improve and progress our services, through making time for training, development and coaching of our employees. “This small change in opening hours will enable us to not only support staff, but develop and improve service to our customers too.” ENC consulted customers over a two-week period via a survey, and 99.5 per cent of responses stated that the late opening would not cause problems for them in terms of accessing council services, particularly as many services are available online at www.eastnorthamptonshire.gov.uk/doitonline The office opening times will be reviewed after six months to evaluate the impact on both council staff and customers.

HIGHEST STANDARDS

“We have supported the principle of a new village for a number of years and, with this Government funding, we can now work with the Deene Estate to ensure that the proposal is of the highest possible standard of design and sustainability and addresses concerns and opportunities identified by local communities.” Development Manager Aldred Drummond, speaking for the Deene Estate, said: “The Estate has owned this land for

more than 500 years and is determined to use its landholdings and long term stewardship to create a model for sustainable rural living, with exemplary standards of design and community facilities. “The uniqueness of the site is its scale at over 650 acres, with around a quarter to be built on, which gives unrivalled potential for a true garden village with masses of green space. “We are working closely with the Joint Planning Unit and East Northamptonshire Council in refining our masterplan and this funding, and the national recognition that comes with it, is a major boost.” The council has set up a Garden Village Project Board, including representatives of the district, county and parish councils to oversee the project as it moves forward.

SPOTLIGHT ON…

Young referee is holding all the right cards

“My name is Luke Addis and I am 16-yearsold. I am a fully qualified referee. I qualified when I was 14-years-old. I referee every Sunday in the Weetabix Youth League and after a couple of years refereeing I was asked to join the Northants referees development group where I work with the Northamptonshire FA and have to attend monthly meetings to help me develop and improve. I used to play football for Rushden & Higham Football Club. I played for them for about eight years.

I stopped playing football when I was 15 so I could concentrate on refereeing. When I was 15, I was asked to run the line for Rushden & Higham Reserves and I really enjoyed the experience. A year later at 16 , I was asked to help out at Rushden & Higham as the league was short of UCL officials. After I received good feedback from the referee I decided to join the list of United Counties League officials. I am lucky I get a game every Saturday, It means I have to travel up to about 40 miles each way but I don’t mind that.

I have been fortunate to have worked with some really good referees and they all offer good advice on how to improve. The only downside to running the line is sometimes managers shout abuse because of some of the decisions you make. But I won’t let this put me off and I will continue to learn and improve.”

VOLLEYBALL

Rebels cruise to victory

IN the Men’s Division Two, Rebels entered into this game knowing that if they had any aspirations of topping the table a result was needed. They were bolstered by Oliver Bunting and temporary return of the travelling Karsten. Rebels got off to a good start taking a 7-2 lead through good serving Dorka backed up by hitting and blocking from Konrad. But the Rebels were complicit in the MK comeback due to the hitting errors and at 21-20 down, the Rebels brought on Karsten to add some height to

the the front line. It worked and Rebels took the set. Both squads shuffled the line-ups at the start of set two and MK got the Jump. M Kurera served down the line and with a mix of poor digs, and missed hits from the Rebels they were 5-0 down. The rotations saw the Rebels take the set 25-17. Rebels took the third set and the match. This was a tight game played in the right spirit, it could have easily gone the distance but some substitutions made at the right time saw the Rebels through to a 3-0 win.

Swimming club sponsor boost NoRTHAMPToN Swimming Club, home to 2016 Paralympian gold medallist Ellie Robinson, has received a sponsorship deal from five star housebuilder Barratt Homes for its Winter Festival this year. The Northampton Swimming Club and Barratt Homes Winter Festival is one of three swimming competitions which Northampton Swimming Club hosts each year at the Corby International Pool. With the backing of the local housebuilder Barratt Homes, the event was hosted from Friday 16th December to Sunday 18th December. The competition, which saw individuals of all ages from 24 various clubs across the region compete, took place over five sessions, which commenced on the Friday. Para-swimmer Ellie Robinson BBC Young Sports Personality of the year 2016, who won a gold medal in the women’s S6 50m Butterfly event and a bronze medal in the women’s S6 100m Freestyle at the Rio olympics earlier this year, also competed in the event.

Each swimmer who competed had to satisfy certain qualifying times. The swimmers were placed in heats based on their entry times and competed against each other to improve their own personal swimming times, achieve regional and national times or just to increase their competition experience. Medals were awarded to the fastest three swimmers in the various age groups for each event. The events covered each of the different strokes freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke.

SWIMMERS OF ALL AGES

Northampton Swimming Club is not just for children but caters for swimmers of all ages. Andrew Swindell, Managing Director at Barratt Homes Northampton, said: “We are delighted to have been able to sponsor such a hugely successful event like the Winter Festival at Northampton Swimming Club. “As a local housebuilder we feel it is

extremely important to support the community in and around the area as well as providing quality homes. “As this is a non-profit organisation, the coaches look for volunteers to help organise and officiate this event and are reliant on donations and sponsors to help with the costs of running such events. “We were more than happy to do our bit and sponsor this event so we could help the club to continue to coach individuals who enjoy swimming.” Jacquie Marshall, Director of Swimming at the club, said: “We would like to thank Barratt Homes for kindly sponsoring our Winter Festival event. “Without the support of local businesses we would not be able to run such events which provide invaluable competition experience to those participating. “This has proved to be a popular event for local children in the past and we are looking forward to seeing how the competitions turn out in 2017.”
