IN MY OPINION
FIXING THE JOBS DEFICIT
R
by Andy Mercer
uSHDEN, Higham, Irthling borough and Raunds make up the ‘Four Towns’ area. All were badly hit by the decline of the Boot and Shoe Industry. Today, in the Four Towns, we have just 0.62 local jobs per worker, (and that’s ignoring the unemployed!) By contrast, Corby has 0.97 per worker. The jobs deficit in the Four Towns is simply unsustainable. Having more than a third of workers commuting out of the area puts huge pressure on the roads. (e.g. At peak periods, Chowns Mill is already at MORE than 100% capacity.) Worse still, it forces 100s of workers to make long journeys to get to work, costing them extra petrol and wear-and-tear on their cars. It’s expensive and damages their quality of life. The solution is to get more jobs locally. Rushden Lakes, with its 2000+ jobs, is a marvellous start, but it’s not
enough – we need more. East Northamptonshire Council (ENC) and Rushden Town Council (RTC) have fought hard to get Rushden labelled as a ‘Growth Town’. They are now using that status to promote a scheme across and beyond the A6. Called ‘Rushden East’, it will be roughly between John Clark Way and Newton Road. It will bring a new industrial estate, a new cemetery, new housing estates, new
parks, etc. The plans are at a very early stage, with no hard decisions made, but the target is at least 2000 well-paid jobs. Nothing is certain in politics, and we may yet hit a showstopper. However, with luck and good will, a few years after Skew Bridge opens, work will start on Rushden East. Regenerating Rushden is going to take years, but the sooner we start, the sooner we finish.
Council successfully defends appeal against development
East Northamptonshire Council has successfully defended an appeal against the council’s refusal of a housing development in Oundle.
The development proposed was for up to 95 dwellings on land between St Christopher’s Drive and the A605 Oundle Bypass. It was refused by East Northamptonshire Council in October 2013 on the grounds that it went against the Rural North, Oundle and Thrapston Plan (RNOTP). Persimmon Homes appealed this decision in November 2013, as it argued that the council could not demonstrate five years deliverable supply of housing land, which is a requirement of national planning policy. An absence of this would normally lead to the granting of planning permission on appeal, regardless of whether or not a proposed scheme fits the Local Plan. At the Public Inquiry held in June 2014, a number of issues were discussed, evidence heard
and plans scrutinised. The inspector eventually concluded that East Northamptonshire Council currently has housing land supply for 3,865 dwellings which equates to nine years worth. Given that the council is easily able to demonstrate a robust five years housing land supply, the Inspector concluded that the scheme’s obvious conflict with the adopted Local Plan (RNOTP policies 1 and 2) was strong enough grounds to dismiss Persimmon Homes’ appeal. Steven North, Leader of East Northamptonshire Council, said: “We’re pleased with the decision and are confident that this should reduce future risks of further speculative applications for development schemes on unallocated ‘greenfield’ sites throughout the district.”

Swivel Club raises £3,000 for Macmillan nurses
THE Swivel Club (registered charity no 1138750) raised a whopping £3,000 on Saturday night to help support the good work of the Macmillan nurses locally. The rock ‘n’ roll event was a sell out and saw the Rushden Bowling Club rocking along with Johnny Red and the Jets who were performing their Legends act. Filling the dance floor for the evening, both popular acts went down a storm. Swivel Club Chairman Colin Wright said: “We are thrilled with how well this event went, and very pleased to be able to present the money raised to such a worthy cause. The work the Macmillan nurses do is invaluable and it is a big part of cancer care in the county.”

Service before self – that’s the Rotary motto
MANy people see the word ROTARy and think they know what it means. The fact is that the general public have little idea about what Rotary is and what it does in our local communities, nationally and across the world. People see Rotarians directing traffic at the Dragon Boats event at Wicksteed Park and they see Rotarians on the streets collecting for Marie Curie or another worthy cause. They know that some Rotarians will be doing good works at Christmas - but what about the other things Rotarians do? If you read this column regularly you will have noticed that Rotary has been very active in our community supporting young musicians, chefs and public speakers, looking after disabled men and women through Sailability and MIND for example, raising awareness of the plight of disadvantaged and disabled people all over the world and playing a leading part in the eradication of that killer disease POLIO. While Googling a topic the other day, I came across a project in America that Rotarians had set up. “The Rotary Club of Tehachapi will hold its 11th Annual Seniors Smoke Alarm Battery Replacement Program from 9am to noon on Saturday, November 8, 2014”. What a wonderfully down to earth project this will be and very worthwhile for the Senior Citizens. The photograph above left shows these Rotarians dressed ready to tackle their selfless work in their community – no Dinner Suits that day! Across the world over a million Rotarians live up to their motto of SERVICE BEFORE SELF by giving their time and skills to enjoy the opportunity to give something back to communities at home and abroad, learn new skills, expand their social network and enjoy themselves doing it. Habitat improvements continue at internationally important site With the help of funding from the SITA Trust and Heritage Lottery Fund, the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire has been busy making important improvements for wildlife and visitors at Irthlingborough Lakes and Meadows nature reserve. Over the summer shallow scrapes and pools have been created for wetland birds and new ditches have been dug to make better conditions for invertebrates, waders and waterfowl. By removing willow from around some of the lake edges the Wildlife Trust is gradually returning the landscape to its former open state and making the reserve more attractive to birds such as lapwing and wigeon. Newly-created islands will also provide ideal breeding habitat for wetland birds such as terns and snipe. And there is still more to come over the next few months. Fencing along the East Northamptonshire Greenway has already begun and once fully completed cattle will be introduced to graze parts of the site to complete the picture. Footpath re-surfacing along the old railway line may involve some temporary
disruption but will make the site even more accessible to visitors once complete, particularly for those with pushchairs and wheelchairs. Dog owners will also welcome improvements made to the designated ‘doggy dip’ area off the Greenway which will make it easier for dogs to get in and out of the water for a well-deserved swim during their walk. Heather Procter, Nene Valley Project Manager at the Wildlife
Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire, said “The work we are doing will help to create ideal conditions for existing and new species of breeding waders and wintering waterfowl at this internationally important site, as well making it an even more enjoyable place for people to visit all year round.” Get a preview of what Irthlingborough Lakes and Meadows nature reserve will eventually look like once all the habitat
improvement works are complete by taking a look at the Wildlife Trust’s fantastic new online panoramic visualisation by visiting wt360s.wildlifetrusts.org/ slruser/nenevalley/ If you are interested in getting involved with on-going management of the nature reserve there are plenty of ways that you can help. THIS November will see the 23rd Annual Exhibition by Rushden based aviation and railway artist Keith Hill at Rushden Hall. The Exhibition will be opened by Rushden Town Mayor Cllr. Richard Lewis on November 15th at 11-30. Throughout the year Keith has been working on a series of eight WW1 aircraft paintings which will be unveiled at the Exhibition. Keith said: “It seemed right to mark the centenary of WW1 with these paintings especially as both my Grandfathers served in the conflict and one of my Grandmothers worked in the CWS shoe factory during the war.” Keith also said that he hoped to have an ‘appropriate person’ from each of the countries represented to unveil each painting. As well as aviation art there will be railway subjects depicted, many of which are local scenes. The Exhibition runs from Saturday Nov 15th until Sunday Nov 23rd from 11-00am till 4-00pm daily. Care company creates 150 jobs… there’s more to come!
A HIGHAM FERRERS based athome care company has created 150 local jobs since its establishment in 2010. Set up by husband and wife team, Mark and Rosie Darnell, the company specialises in at-home care for the elderly. The team currently employs 140 caregivers plus an office team of 14 and, despite these impressive numbers, they have 20 vacancies at present for caregivers. Speaking about the business’s growth, Mark said: “Our care is quite unique in a number of respects and this makes us an appealing employer. It also means that we have a high ratio of caregivers to clients, so we are always in need of caring, compassionate people to work with us. “We don’t take the typical taskbased approach which sees carers delivering care in 15 minute slots and having to rush between care visits. Instead, our approach is companionship-based with clients and caregivers matched based on shared interests or life experience. “Our care visits are also of a minimum one hour in duration so our caregivers have time to make a real difference to their clients’ lives.”
With a rapidly ageing population, Mark and his team have seen demand for their service grow over the last four years. Mark also believes that they are creating a new homecare market which is based on client needs rather than a list of tasks. Picking up the story, Mark said: “We approach clients and their families and ask them what they would like their care
to look like. It’s very different to the typical approach where people are told what they are eligible for.” Of course, this level of customer service requires the back up of an extensive office team, hence the 14 staff employed in Higham Ferrers. Prior to setting up Home Instead Mark was the Managing Director of Rushden & Diamonds
Mark Darnell with Rosie to his right and the office team.
FC and a Main Board Director of Dr Martens Footwear He concludes: “Rosie and I set up this business as we wanted to have a positive impact on the community in which we lived and worked. Home Instead allows us to do just that. “What’s more, we are creating local jobs and that has to be a good thing. It’s a win, win situation.”

Successful launch of 2014 Poppy Appeal
THE Rushden Branch of the Royal British Legion have successfully launched this year’s Poppy Appeal. It took place alongside the annual 1940’s weekend held at The Rushden Historical Transport Society’s Rushden Station which was built by the Midland Railway in 1894; it was only an intermediate station on the Higham Ferrers branch line and was closed in 1959. The line was finally closed to all rail traffic in 1969 and in 1984 the RHTS obtained a lease on the building eventually purchasing it in 1996 after many years of campaigning to save the building from demolition. Today, the building has been beautifully restored acting as a Museum and Club House for the Society, thus yet again enabling a bigger and better 1940s weekend with more displays and with the use of the Goods Shed yard for the first time. After a quiet start due to the weather on Saturday, the rest of the weekend was full on, with people fully participating in their 1940’s dress. On Sunday a number of large WW2 American trucks also joined in. The crowds were
entertained by the ‘Blitz Sisters’ and on Sunday afternoon by the Mainline Band. Sunday saw a Memorial Service held on the platform for the ‘Fallen’ of the World Wars and recent conflicts. RHTS, who hosted the event, also provided train rides and refreshments in their newly restored Buffet Car. The “CAMRA” awarding winning Bar was also available . Monies raised at the event will be d i v i d e d between the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, the Merchant Navy Association and RHTS. The RBL Poppy Stall was a huge success with scores of people in attendance. A grand sum of £965.39p was raised, which is in excess of £200 from last year’s appeal. This is exclusive of monies raised by RHTS clearly posting a great success all round and thanks to the generosity of the public and patrons of the RHTS - a
huge thank you to the organisers and supporting public.” Finally, I believe it would seem appropriate at this point to print something special covering the centenary of the First World War. “A century on from the outbreak of the Great War, it remains impossible to overstate the global impact of the conflict or the sacrifice made by so many people right around the world. The First World War left an indelible mark on our communities. The heroism of Rushden born Lieutenant Colonel Bernard Vann VC and many others from Rushden who may not have been recognised by high military decoration or award, but their sacrifices were no less significant, and their loss felt just as deeply by the families and communities they fought to protect. They made the ultimate sacrifice, will never be forgotten; we will remember them. During the month of Remembrance, the following events are to take place:
5th November at 10.50am remembrance Garden service at the rushden War Memorial
15th November at 7.30pm remembrance Band Concert at st Mary’s Church. tickets £5 at the door.
This year’s Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service takes place at Rushden’s War Memorial on Sunday 9th November 2014 commencing at 1050am. Please come along and take part in the Royal British Legion sponsored event which is always supported by many current and former service personnel, their families, blue light services, charities, societies, youth organisations, dignitaries, etc. Those wishing to take part in the parade should be forming up on Robinson Road by 1015am marching off at 1030am. Rushden’s Party gets tremendous feedback
rUsHdEN’s Party in the Park has now become an established feature of the local calendar. We all know how well it is supported and attended, but now we have some figures of how well the local charities benefit from it. rushden town Council organise Party in the Park. they have done a survey of charities who had a stall there this year asking how much money they raised or how it helped their organisation. their feedback was tremendous. although only half of the organisations have answered the survey, from those that have, nearly £4000 was raised, so the real amount could be double that. However, the feedback was even better than the money raised. Many organisations use the event primarily to raise
awareness of what they do. all the charities and local organisations found that they were able to get their message out to many people and lots got extra volunteers. lots of the comments were that they thought the event was very well organised and would like to come again next year. Party in the Park takes a whole year to plan and is run by the Events committee of rushden town Council. It is run very economically by volunteers, so last year’s event cost the town around £6300 which is around 21p per person. Party in the Park 2015 is being planned for saturday 11th July 2015, so make sure you do not miss it. so far the rollin Clones have been booked for the wonderful free evening finale, so this should prove very popular.

Pick up or pay up
a dOG owner from rushden has paid a hefty price for not picking up after his pooch and giving false information when questioned about it. Michael davey was spotted not clearing up his dog’s mess in Hall Park, rushden by the East Northamptonshire Council dog warden. He was issued with a £75 fine but gave a false name and address. this setback was soon overcome though as a few days later, the dog warden spotted Mr davey getting in his car near the park and noted his registration number so his real name and address could be traced. Mr davey was then sent details of his fine and how to pay it but chose to ignore the repeated requests to pay which led to a court summons. the case came to Northampton Magistrates Court in september where the defendant did not attend and a fine of £1,200 was issued for dog fouling and giving false information. He was also ordered to pay £460 costs. steven North, East Northamptonshire Council leader, said: “We know that keeping our streets and green spaces free of litter and dog mess is extremely important to our residents and visitors. this is another case that should remind all dog walkers that failing to clean up after your dog is an offence, and one that we take very seriously.” sarah Peacock, leader of rushden town Council who employ the dog warden for two days a week to patrol parts of the town, added: “Most dog owners are responsible and clear up after their dog but there is a small minority who leave this offensive type of litter on our streets and in parks. It is to these we will issue fines, on the spot or if necessary, as was the case here, via the courts. the message is simple - pick up or pay up.”

VOLLEYBALL Raiders v MK Enigma
WELL this was the opening game of the season for the Raiders and one would have to say that it showed. Service reception and coverage were a bit rusty and the amount of kill hits was not great. MK have changed their team structures this season looking to blend the beginners with their more established players. The Raiders were slightly quicker out of the blocks and took a solid lead in the first set on the back of some solid serving from Jay Whittaker. The lead was extended with a couple of stuff blocks . G James was the stand out hitter for MK and regularly sided out. Paul Ashton had a good run of serves for MK but it was not enough to close the gap. Loz Denton showed the value of putting serves deep into court scooping seven points to take out the set. Zaki’s entrance onto court in set two gave MK more movement and coverage back court. It was far more closely contested and with harder hits and bigger blocks. However it was the overpasses from both sides that saw some interesting net play. Both sides had runs of six points on serve yet it was another three point run from last year’s player of year Andy Turner that took the set for the Raiders. This was his last contribu-

tion of the game as he had to leave. So he was blissfully unaware of the swings in fortune that were to occur in the third set. Raiders set off into a 7-1 lead only to suffer a meltdown on service reception dropping ten points on the Paul Aston serve. Confusion reigned in the Raiders backcourt but they were spared more blushes with a big stuff block from Darren and Rik. The frailties of the defence were exposed time and again by G. James but Christian Miles popped up several times with power hits for the Raiders and they edged to the set 2523. This was a good opening game for the Raiders giving them, a winning start and plenty of things to work on. MVP’s were G James for MK and Keith Barnett for the Raiders. Thanks to Piotr for his assistance.
tHIs season the club will be entering two teams in the men’s league for the first time in about 18 years. they are still looking for ladies to join the squad and also the junior section. the skill level of the juniors is improving week on week. Fixtures are likely to start mid October.

CHESS
RuSHDEN’S teams were caught napping and woken with a start as the 2014-15 Silver King League kicked off with tough openers for both teams. Player absences (holidays, not ebola) deprived the A-Team of any realistic hope of a surprise result as they were bravely but gravely out-rated & out-gunned by Championship hopefuls Chess Mates B, though Sajan Ganger and James Gardner played well for a share and James could perhaps have played on for the win against the Mates’ Chris Gibson (game below). The B-Team’s opener against Oundle School’s juniors turned into a disaster area in what is usually a very close fixture. Oundle’s ‘A-Division strength’ top two coasted into victory mode with Sam Herring sneaking in a subtle Bishop + Knight mate against the unsuspecting Jeff Owen (game below), which heralded a bottom 3 board collapse and a clean sweep for the (mostly) young visitors. FINANCIAL FOCUS
Real-time information (RTI) HMRC will phase in quarterly penalties for late RTI returns by business size, starting with those who employ 50 or more staff, on 6 October 2014. They will apply to all employers after 5 March 2015. The penalties are raised if your full payment submission (FPS) was late, you did not send in the expected number of FPS’s or you didn’t send an employer payment summary (EPS) when you didn’t pay any employees in the tax month. You haven’t misread the last line. You get a penalty for not telling HMRC that you didn’t pay anyone! Not only that, you have to give them this information in the correct manner using the correct form, otherwise – yes – a penalty. Many small companies consist of one or two director/shareholders (traditionally wife and husband). They need to open a payroll scheme to make sure that any payments to them are recorded, to protect their entitlement to benefits such as state second pension and statutory maternity pay, and, should the business fail, the right to claim Jobseekers Allowance. These payments as salary are kept to the secondary threshold for NIC purposes (the level at which you do not pay NIC but are deemed to have done
so). There may be months when directors cannot pay themselves because of lack of cash. They must ensure that they let HMRC know that they have not made a payment to avoid a penalty. There is a “get out clause” for those businesses which are unlikely to pay anyone in a given period (perhaps because of a temporary cessation of trade). You can apply to HMRC by ticking a box on the EPS giving this information. It is also the case that many small employers take on casual staff. The rules for RTI are that if you have a payroll scheme and you pay anyone, even a casual, even only a couple of times a year, that person must be included on your RTI submission. If you don’t submit your FPS on time, or if you don’t send an EPS showing that you haven’t paid anyone, HMRC may raise something called a “specified charge” – an estimate of how much HMRC thinks you should pay, based on any history of payments that they hold. If they have no history to go on (for example with a new scheme) they will still make an estimate. This estimate does not replace the correct figures but will be the amount used to
chase the employer and calculate penalties and interest until the correct figures come in. So, what are these penalties? If you employ up to nine people, the penalty is £100 per month for the infringements shown above. For 10 to 49 employees the amount is £200, for 50 to 249, £300 and for 250 or more, £400. In addition you can be charged 5% of the tax and NIC that should have been reported if you have still not done so after 3 months. It is clear that these penalties are intended to catch those employers who do not pay legitimate tax and NIC on time. Unfortunately, they will almost certainly catch the innocent – those who do not owe anything and believe that they do not need to do anything. They are, in my opinion, fairly draconian in themselves, but the real cost is, as always for employers, the cost of compliance – whether you do this yourself, employ someone to do it or pass it to your accountant. PROPERTY FOCUS
How to be a hot buyer AS the property market continues to surge, demand for properties is rapidly outstripping supply, meaning that there are often several potential purchasers for one property which results in many sales being agreed before the property has even been advertised. Sadly, we can only sell one property to one purchaser and all too often people miss out on something that would have been ideal for them. So what should a buyer do to ensure that they don’t? Firstly, something of a revolutionary concept, be very nice to the estate agents. Spend some time building a rapport – they aren’t all as evil as you may think. They are providing a free service to you, the purchaser, by endeavouring to find you a suitable property. Remember, there are more buyers than sellers, so not returning calls or emails or – our favourite – getting stroppy because we’ve had the nerve to contact you about a house and interrupted your day… This behaviour will not endear you to any agent and will result in you plummeting to the bottom of their applicant list. Secondly, ensure you have
your deposit in place and an Agreement in Principle from a mortgage lender before you start house hunting. This proves to both agent and vendor that you are serious and good for the money. There is nothing more frustrating for an agent to encounter evasive, vague applicants who want to view properties with no guarantee that they can be able to afford them as they could be a waste of everybody’s time. Thirdly, keep an open mind to what the agent suggests and do make the effort to view, even if you feel it may not be 100% what you are after. They have seen the property, you haven’t, and any estate agent will tell that the majority of purchasers eventually end up buying something which doesn’t meet all of their criteria or in many cases is totally different from what they said they wanted. Follow these simple guidelines and you should find yourself classed as a ‘hot buyer’ and top of their list to call when a suitable property hits the market. Barker and Bass

Photographs from the Eric Fowell collection Over the past few months we have been showing you photographs from years gone by. These pictures are kindly supplied to us by Eric Fowell. Eric has published a number of books full of these evocative photographs of Rushden and Higham Ferrers. These books make a great Christmas gift and they are available from:
Poddington Garden Centre, Poddington; Seasons Garden Centre, Burton Latimer; Rushden and Higham Ferrers’ libraries and Sidey Design, 10 Market Square, Higham Ferrers.
Rushden Swimming Baths c. 1936. Photo by C. F. Chapman One of the summer’s exciting events in Rushden was a swimming gala – every seat taken and many standing. Rushden Swimming Club had an enthusiastic polo team; this photograph shows the Club doing one their ‘comic’ life-saving acts. On the left: Arthur Sanders with Harry Steel.
Rushden Swimming Baths 1937-38 Here we find Mrs. Dorris Wheeler with her family, Jean, Reg and Geoff, enjoying a break from swimming. Jean was an outstanding swimmer who represented her school many times, and helped Alfred Street Juniors win many trophies. Also, on the diving board, are Jack Cotton and Reg Wheeler, wearing the Club’s standard swimming costume. This swimming pool, off Station Road, was opened in 1929 by the then Chairman of RUDC, Dr. Dudley George Greenfield, MD. Today we have a splash pool on the old site, giving us all-year-round amenity. The Chairperson of East Northamptonshire District Council Mrs. Gwen Murdin, opened the pool on November 3rd, 1990. (recently refurbished, 2014).

What’s happening at Soul In The Bowl? by Steve Brown IF YOU love your Soul and Motown come along to Rushden Bowls Club on Saturday 15th November for the last Soul In The Bowl Motown night of the year. Steve Brown and Chris Price will be spinning all the top tunes from the iconic venues of yesteryear. Go back in time to ‘Shades’ ‘The George’ and ‘Big Bob’s, and hear all the original vinyl that was played at these events. The previous Soul In The Bowl Motown nights have been a massive success, with a packed dance floor, and friendly party atmosphere. In fact demand has been so high that we have been asked to put on this extra night. It will on this occasion however, be on the Terrace Bar wooden dance floor, so numbers will be limited to 180. Admission is just £5 and will be guaranteed with a reservation, otherwise best to get there early and pay just £6 on the door, subject to availability! To reserve your place either phone or text 07714 336373 / 07860 673606 or email soultime365@yahoo.com Tickets can also be picked up
from the Bowls Club during opening hours.
The Northern Soul revival gathers strength! With the release this month of the much acclaimed film Northern Soul – The Movie, with cameo roles for the likes of Steve Coogan and Ricky Tomlinson, it is certain that even more interest will be generated in the strange and quirky world of Northern Soul. Due for a limited release the film world have been amazed at the demand for screenings with cinemas up and down the Country having to hastily arrange extra showings. Director Elaine Constantine, who, herself, is a lifelong soul fan mortgaged everything (including her home) to make the film, which captures the essence of the 1970s underground scene perfectly.
2015.. This will be in the original Soul In The Bowl format of two rooms of Northern Soul. We now have Mr Karl Boddington running Karl’s Kavern, formally known as the Den. This room is dark and moody and will feature some of the top DJs playing their rare soul treasures. Special guest in the main room is top UK DJ Tony Dellar, so that is a night not to miss. Resident DJ Steve Brown will be celebrating a significant birthday that night so admission will be just £5 of which £2.50 will be donated to the local branch of the Cats Protection charity. The next ‘Big Floor Motown Night’ is scheduled for April 18th 2015. This makes a great night for a get together, dancing to all the popular tunes with friends. There
are special discounts for parties of ten or more so make sure you put this date in the diary. Hot news for July is that we have booked one of the best up and coming soul bands in the UK, The Soft Tone Needles! This fabulous 10 piece band has several clips on You Tube so well worth a look. The brass section is awesome and the vocals superb, as they perform their way through all the popular Motown and Soul hits of the 60s. This is a charity night run by the Rushden based Swivel Club, in aid of good specific local causes. Local Soul DJ Steve Brown will be supporting them so definitely one not to miss. We hope to see you all again soon. If you got Soul get along to ‘The Bowl’!
Future Soul In The Bowl Events Now is a good time to update everyone on next year’s happenings at ‘The Bowl’. We have several big events lined up, starting with the next Northern Soul Night which is on Saturday, February 7th

Northern Soul the film reviewed by Jem Brittin WE START this month off with a review of the eagerly awaited film ‘Northern Soul’ for the maker Elaine Constantdine it’s been the end of a journey that started out almost 20 years ago as a project. Full credit must go to her for sticking with it and finally getting it to the big screen this year. I am sure there must have been times she thought it would never happen! The last hurdle being, once it was completed, the prospect of it getting a very limited showing and talk of it going straight to DVD. However the national outcry from Soul fans was so audible it reached the ears of the media, culminating in amongst other reports a feature a few weeks back on BBC Breakfast, with one of the films cast Lisa Stansfield bringing attention to this. Never underestimate the UKs Soul fans! Is the lesson and Northants Is no exception? Local Soul man and promoter of The Wellingborough Soul Weekender at The Castle Theatre
Wellingborough Kev Bourne, stepped up and convinced the Theatre to show the film, initially it was planned as a one off! Showing on Thursday 23rd of October that immediately sold out! So they extended it to Friday and Saturday showing. I was lucky enough to grab a handful of tickets for the first night and went along with the wife and a few friends. So was it worth waiting for? Before I give my verdict let’s just get a few things in perspective, to attempt to make a fictional film with a story line, that pays true homage to the Northern Soul Scene warts and all! Is no mean feat, you could argue it might have been easier to do a documentary. Although Elaine is a very successful celebrity photographer, she had never made a film before, sure she has connections within the industry but such was her resolve to make the film herself she studied and achieved a diploma in script writing along the way. So to the film! Well the story begins during
TEL: 07724 905406 or 07894 935952 1974 in a grim town somewhere ‘up north’ great I thought as this was the year coincidently I heard Northern Soul myself, it charts the story of an awkward teenage lad who stumbles across the Northern Soul scene, set against a backdrop of the bleak industrialised mid seventies England. He is in the final years of a comprehensive school with out much prospect of gaining many qualifications thus written off basically to forever be working in a local factory or the like, which I remember being the case back then if you weren’t in the top sets of the year you were pretty much forgotten! an experience I shared. This sets the sometimes dark tone for the film and without giving too much away it goes on to deal with everything the scene offered good and bad with sometimes shocking consequences but at the same time there are some genuinely funny moments. Steve Coogan crops up as a teacher and Lisa Stansfield plays a convincing role as the lead characters Mum with Ricky Tomlinson making an appearance as the lad’s Granddad, however the real stars of the film are the young actors who play the principle parts, they really make the film, not only with their acting but getting the dancing moves the look and attitude right. As someone who was around at the time I can attest this. A lot of the detail, clothes cars records etc. are spot on and really took me back. Whether you were/are a Northern Soul fan or someone that enjoys a good ‘coming of age film’ I strongly recommend you get along to see it or at least buy the DVD when it comes out. Finally would just like to thank Len Dopson for supplying some background insight into Elaine and the making of the film. Len and wife Nina are good friends of Elaine meeting up with her many years back at the 100 Club Northern Soul Allnighters London. Len alluded to the amount of effort required and self sacrifice both personally and financially Elaine made to make the film. He was also privileged to appear in a smaller promotional film made to promote the films general release showing off his dance moves! Kindly he allowed us to use a personal photo of him, demonstrating some more moves in his front room to Elaine. Thanks Len and we wish Elaine all the success she deserves with the film! While Northern Soul is in the air there are two events coming up where you can go and relive your memories on the dance floor for real! Firstly Friday November 7th sees another ‘Nowt but Northern’ Northants newest Northern Soul Night at The Courtyard Stanwick NN9 6QY join myself and guest Djs

for 100% quality classic Northern Soul 8pm to very late (12.45ish) £6 on the door or £5 reserve in advance call 07905 028003. Secondly The Cotton Club Northampton is the venue for ‘Spinners’ Northern Soul Night on Saturday 22, November, my self and friends have attended these nights and they really are good. I have been asked to return on the 22nd to do a stint behind the decks along with other guest DJs so be good to see you there! Things kick off at 7pm, the event address is Main Road, Northampton NN4 8EN call Geoff on 07889 151009. See you somewhere Soulful soon Jem.

THEATRE – Sharnbrook Mill Theatre Miss Saigon School Edition By the Sharnbrook Mill Theatre Trust. Friday 14th to Saturday 22nd November at 7.30pm. Matinee at 2.30pm on Saturday 15th and 22nd. No performance on Monday 17th. Sharnbrook Mill Theatre, Mill Road, Sharnbrook, MK44 1NP TO MARK 25 years of this glorious musical Sharnbrook Mill Theatre Trust is presenting the school edition of Miss Saigon from the 14th to 22nd November. Featuring a cast of performers under the age of 19 the show by Alan Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg (the creators of ‘Les Misérables), is one of the most stunning theatrical spectacles of all time. Based on Puccini’s immortal grand opera, ‘Madame Butterfly,’ ‘Miss Saigon’ tells the story of an American soldier and a Vietnamese girl who fall in love amidst the turmoil of the Vietnam war. Separated when Saigon falls to the enemy they spend the following years struggling to find each other again only for their
endeavours to end in tragedy for her but some hope for the child that he knows nothing about. A great story told with great music, ‘Miss Saigon’ offers a moving testament to the human spirit and a scathing indictment of the evils of war. Starring Jasmine Bayes as Kim from Higham Ferrers and Connor Tagulu as Chris it features all the songs from the current West End hit including “The Movie In My Mind”, “Sun and Moon” and “The American Dream”. Director Paul Wildman says “I couldn’t ask for a more committed and talented cast and crew to make this stunning show a possibility. The acting, singing and movement is to such a high standard, you don’t need to go to the West End!” • Tickets from £10 are available from: www.sharnbrook milletheatre.co.uk, the Central Box Office, Old Town Hall, St Paul’s Square, Bedford. The Imitation Game Benedict Cumberbatch • Keira Knightley • Matthew Goode IN CINEMAS: 14 November Benedict Cumberbatch portrays Alan Turing in this bittersweet World War II code breaking drama. The historical biopic follows Turing’s efforts – as leader of a group of young mathematicians – to crack the Enigma code, used by the German war machine to issue orders to its forces, but it’s the heart-breaking personal cost endured by the troubled mathematical genius that forms an unpleasant subtext. Despite his work at Bletchley Park having been credited with shortening the war by at least a couple of years, Turing was later sentenced to chemical castration for engaging in a homosexual relationship, leading to his eventual suicide in 1954. So while it’s great that the film celebrates Turing’s invaluable work during WWII, it’s also shocking that anyone – not least a war hero – could be subjected to such bigotry in the post-war years. Sadly, Turing could never talk about his work at Bletchley, as it was subject to the Official Secrets Act, and his codebreaking efforts only came to light many years after his death. Cumberbatch is already being tipped for an Oscar for his performance as the code-breaking genius, while he’s ably supported by an ensemble cast that includes Mark Strong, Keira Knightley and Matthew Goode. ★★★★★

What We Do In The Shadows Jemaine Clement • Taika Waititi • Jonathan Brugh IN CINEMAS: 21 November This hilarious mockumentary follows the adventures of a group of idiotic vampires who live in a suburban flatshare, and bicker among themselves about whose turn it is to do the dishes. The reality TV-style format invites us into their home to witness their pathetically mundane lives, as they get ready for a night out, but can’t check out how they look in the mirror as they lack a reflection. Co-starring Jemaine Clement of Flight Of The Conchords fame, it would have been easy for the film to fall into a cheesy Addams Familystyle tribute, but that’s carefully avoided here, and there are plenty of laughs to be had from the cultural differences between the amiable bloodsuckers and the outside world. ★★★★✩

Timothy Spall is on top form as eccentric British painter J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) in Mike Leigh’s film about the inspirational artist. Picking up the award for Best Actor at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Spall portrays Turner as an inarticulate and bumbling figure with an appalling lack of social graces, but also someone who went to great lengths for his art – even going so far as strapping himself to the mast of a ship to experience a storm at sea. One of Marvel Comics’ best kept secrets, the Guardians Of The Galaxy might not have the immediate cinematic appeal of Spider-Man or Iron Man, but thanks to some savvy marketing, a cracking script and a brilliant ensemble cast, the movie turned out to be the surprise hit of the summer. It’s about as slender a plot device as you’d find in a comic book – which we guess is the point – and it’s all just an excuse for our gang of thieving ne’er-do-wells to go on a series of wild adventures. Some of the overly ambitious action sequences do fall a little flat, though, but such missteps are rare in a film that plays out like a drunken Saturday morning cartoon show from the 1980s.★★★★✩
Dawn Of Planet Of The Apes Andy Serkis • Gary Oldman • Keri Russell ON SALE: 24 November Set more than a decade after the events of the last film, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes sees Andy Serkis reprise his role as genetically-altered super chimp, Caesar, as war erupts between humans and apes. A viral apocalypse has killed off most of the human race, with survivors banding together in destroyed cities, while a growing ape community goes from strength to strength. The spark for conflict is provided by none other than Gary Oldman, taking on the role of Drefus, a human leader who blames the apes for the death of his family. New director Matt Reeves certainly delivers an action-packed sequel to the 2011 reboot, but it’s difficult to tell which side you’ll be cheering for by the end of the film. ★★★★✩

GAMES
REPORTER NOVEMBER 2014 — 31 has pulled no punches with his latest game, as players take control of a detective investigating multiple homicides at a mental hospital just as the world goes to hell. Your unfit copper – who can’t run very far without gasping for breath – confronts all sorts of genre staples, including a chainsaw wielding madman, demonic dogs and a chap with a safe for a head, who we can only assume is a doff of a hat to Pyramid Head from the Silent Hill series. The mix of third-person gunplay and stealth mechanics is well done, although the game relies a bit too heavily on well-worn horror tropes for its scares. ★★★✩✩
BOOKS The Churchill Factor: How One Man Made History Bayonetta 2 No One Is Lost by Stars ON SALE: Now Canadian indie pop stalwarts Stars are back with their seventh studio album, combining a more dance-oriented sound with lyrics that dwell on the harsher realities of life. It might be the end of the world as we know it, but the five-piece band from Montreal won’t go down without a fight, or a smile on their faces, while the see-saw vocals of Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan are as lush, crisp and ethereal as they’ve ever been. Standouts include the choral melody that weaves its way through ‘Trap Door’, while disco-tinged opener ‘From The Night’ and the anthemic title track will have you on your feet and heading for the dance floor. ★★★★★
Let’s Get Metaphysical by Carnivores ON SALE: Now Having built up a loyal following through lots of hard gigging and sporadic single releases, alt rockers Carnivores have finally gotten around to releasing their debut album. Let’s Get Metaphysical is a thrilling, tumultuous wall of sound that starts with a bang and builds steadily to a thunderous roar, underpinned by some surprising melodies, good old-fashioned chants, fragile harmonies and even playful brass sections. The Paisley ‘newcomers’ even find time for a spot of hard-hitting social commentary with the politically charged ‘John Maynard Keynes’, but it’s the ear-splitting sound of ‘Insecuricor’ that really sets the album alight. ★★★★✩
Inspiral Carpets by Inspiral Carpets ON SALE: Now Although they were never as hip as the Stone Roses or Happy Mondays, the Inspiral Carpets were still an integral part of the socalled Madchester scene of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Format: Wii U ON SALE: Now Bayonetta is widely regarded as one of the greatest third-person action games ever made, so it’s testament to the team behind this utterly bonkers sequel that it trumps its predecessor in almost every area. Once again, the titular Umbra Witch becomes embroiled in an apocalyptic punch-up between the forces of Heaven and Hell, obliterating all-comers with a riotous array of kicks, punches, dodges, twirls, jumps, slashes and poses. Whether battling angels on top of a fighter-jet, slaying a dragon while perched precariously on the side of a skyscraper, or fighting your way through the bowels of a gigantic demon, the game unfolds at a frantic pace. There’s also an allnew two-player online co-op mode where you and a friend can team up and play through various scenes from the main campaign, placing bets on who will bag the most points. ★★★★✩
Disney Magical World Format: 3DS ON SALE: Now Whether you’re dancing at a ball thrown by Cinderella, helping Winnie the Pooh find honey, or learning to fish with Donald Duck, you certainly won’t be stuck for things to do in this charming Magic Kingdom-inspired life simulator. Once Mickey Mouse has invited you to visit the fanciful world of Castleton, a wide range of activities opens up, including designing your own clothes and furniture, indulging in some light dungeon crawling, crafting magical items, and collecting trading cards. Most of these are unlocked by collecting Happy Stickers as you play, and you’ll soon gain access to other Disneythemed worlds based on Cinderella, 100 Acre Wood, Alice In Wonderland and Aladdin. ★★★✩✩

by Boris Johnson ON SALE: Now When he’s not bossing London as the city’s elected mayor, or making a fool of himself in another carefully orchestrated publicity stunt, Boris Johnson fancies himself as a bit of a writer. As a former editor of The Spectator and a regular columnist for The Daily Telegraph, it seems like he’s rather good at it too, so now he’s written an illuminating portrait of Winston Churchill. Marking the 50th anniversary of Churchill’s death, Johnson explores the singular brilliance of Britain’s greatest wartime leader, and a man of pivotal importance to the history of the 20th century. The Churchill Factor is an engrossing read, too, not least for busting some myths about the hard-drinking aristocrat who had to be ordered by the King to stay out of action on D-Day. It’s probably the best thing Johnson has ever written and is a page-turner from start to finish. ★★★★★
