Proposal to create 500 new jobs
PLANS have been revealed which could create 500 new jobs. Development specialist Ashfield Land has submitted a planning application for a major new commercial scheme known as Rushden Gateway, on the A45 at Rushden, Northamptonshire. The project - estimated to create approximately 500 new jobs - is for the development of about 28 acres to include retail and business space, as well as a care home, in a comprehensive landscaped setting. Rushden Gateway fronts the A45, next to Crown Park where
Waitrose, Wicks and Vets4pets along with numerous other businesses - are already established and opposite the newly opened Rushden Lakes retail and leisure development. The detailed application includes a new 18,600 sq ft foodstore, 24,800 sq ft of non-food retail floor space, a 2,000 sq ft ‘drivethru’, a 60-bed unit care home as well as 200,000 sq ft of business floor space. Director of Ashfield Land Nick Jones said: “This is a substantial investment to deliver jobs and new
business space for Rushden.” In addition to the new buildings, the plans include areas of public space and car parking. As well as the estimated 500 new jobs, 120 further jobs will be either directly or indirectly created through construction, due to commence in 2019, subject to planning. The total economic output for Rushden Gateway is estimated at nearly £17m per annum. Simon Toseland, a director of the retained regional agent PropSearch, said: “The Rushden
Gateway scheme will be anchored by a pre-let, subject to planning, of the expanding and highly-successful operator Aldi. “As well as the retail element of the scheme, business units ranging from circa 5,000 sq ft to 80,000 sq ft will be available and squarely aimed at addressing the chronic shortage of business space within the local market.” In addition to the new buildings, the plans include areas of public space and car parking, all within a carefully designed and landscaped setting.

Council celebrates a double award winning technical gold accolade AT the recent Exemplar Awards 2018, East Northamptonshire Council was presented with a ‘Gold Performance Award’ in recognition of the management of its address information database. It was also awarded the best in the whole of the East Midlands too at the awards ceremony at Edgbaston Cricket Club in Birmingham. Improving public services and overcoming the challenges of data sharing is a key focus for councils. The awards highlighted best practice in local authorities using land and property and street information to tie different services from across the council together to give a ‘property level view of services’. Good data is critical in all of this. Without accurate, current and well-maintained data many of these challenges simply would not be solved. Local councils have a statutory requirement for street naming and numbering and are the source for the millions of address records of
every residence and business in the UK. Addresses are invaluable to our economy and to the public services we use. The Gold Performance Award for Address Data is given to authorities which have reached and maintained the very highest standard in national tests. These tests focus on data excellence and supply of regular updates to the national hub. This manages receipt of address data from all authorities throughout England and Wales. Leader of East Northamptonshire Council, councillor Steven North was delighted at the recent accolade. He said: “This is a great achievement for everyone involved with the project at East Northamptonshire Council. “It reinforces our commitment to providing services of which we can be proud.” You can find out more about the award on the council’s Twitter feed by following its news and views at twitter.com/ENCouncil
Have your say on changes to councils in Northamptonshire
CONSULTATION on a restructure of local government in Northamptonshire has started, with opportunities for all residents, businesses and other stakeholders in the county to have their say. All eight authorities in Northamptonshire are working on a proposal for the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government which “must command a good deal of local support,” so stakeholders across the county have an opportunity to comment before a final proposal is submitted. Formal consultation started on June 18 and runs until until Sunday, July 22. People are being encouraged to have their say by going online to complete a questionnaire at www.futurenorthants.co.uk There they will also find a detailed consultation document which fully explains the proposal. The Government’s invitation to submit a proposal follows a Best Vale Inspection of Northamptonshire County Council, which concluded that its financial, cultural and governance problems could not be solved in isolation and recommended plans be developed for two unitary authorities. The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local
Government has asked the eight authorities in Northamptonshire submit a proposal which meets the following criteria: A single county-wide unitary is explicitly excluded as an option Each new proposed authority must have a population substantially in excess of 300,000 The proposal must be based on existing council boundaries. Alongside the consultation website, copies of the consultation document and the questionnaire will also be available in libraries and local council offices. People should check their council website for details of venues where they can pick up a copy. A representative telephone survey will be carried out and a series of focus groups with representative groups of invited residents will also take place across the county, as well as engagement with other stakeholders. Other consultations by the local media and by individual councils may take place at the same time, so it is really important people respond to the official Local Government Reform Northamptonshire consultation being run by all eight Northamptonshire councils for their comments on the proposal to be considered.

Booklet to help help prevent hospital stays for the elderly HOME Instead East Northants is very aware of the need to prevent hospitalisation of the elderly and have brought out a new booklet, ‘5 Ways to Prevent Hospitalisation’. Hospitals save lives, but no one wants to spend any more time than necessary in one. When older people are admitted to hospitals there is a much higher risk of acquiring infections, muscle wasting through time spent in a hospital bed and an unfamiliar environment. For people over the age of 80 years, 10 days spent in a hospital bed equates to 10 years of muscle wasting. More than ever older people are being admitted to hospital and are then slow to be discharged because they do not have the right support in place at home. Home Instead can make sure all the practical arrangements are in place from transport home, ranging from having fresh linen on your bed, stocking the fridge and liaising with the doctor’s surgery for appointments and prescriptions. CAREGivers will make sure you have eaten, had a nice cuppa, and you are comfortable before they leave. How can we avoid a family member ending up in hospital? Firstly, it’s important for older

people to follow their GPs direction. CAREGivers are trained to spot ‘red flag’ changes such as unused medication and worsening chronic conditions. To encourage walking where possible even five to 10 minutes will make a huge difference. Activities to keep the brain active such as puzzles or drawing will stimulate the synapses. A balanced varied diet containing plenty of fresh fruit vegetables, oily fish and starchy foods. Calcium in dairy products is extremely important to combat
osteoporosis. Your family member needs to keep hydrated and should drink on average one and a half litres a day. But if this is quite a tall order, a jelly as a dessert can be counted as one of your five glasses a day. Companionship is so important. Research shows that loneliness and social isolation are harmful to our health, so it is very important to encourage social activities. Home Instead East Northants now run ‘Companionship Cafes’ which are open to anyone in the community over the age of 65. These are held at Rushden Lakes
DO you have some free time on your hands? Would you like to give back something to the elderly and feel that you are doing something worthwhile? Nene Valley Community Action, (NVCA), has been running a successful befriending project for a couple of years now. The project ‘Home@lone’ provides volunteers to visit elderly and frail adults, who may be isolated from the community, in their own homes giving them something to look forward to, a purpose to get up and dressed and most importantly someone to talk to and interact with. Befrienders say they find it a very rewarding and worthwhile opportunity too and make some friendships out of their visit. Support is provided by NVCA and travel expenses reimbursed. Boost for business with safety advice
THE recent Food Safety Week highlighted the importance of getting in contact with your local authority before you start to build your food business. Flava Jacks, in Raunds, is a great example of a business which contacted East Northamptonshire Council and was given the right information and advice to make sure they got it right at the very beginning. Inspired by Caribbean food, Flava Jacks contacted the council to ask what food regulations it needed to consider. Just one meeting later the owners knew all about: Registering the business Complying with food hygiene legislation Type of equipment needed and the layout of their food business Safe preparation of food Other people they would need to contact prior to trading, such as planners. The council works with businesses, through inspections, coaching, sampling and advisory visits to help them comply with food safety legislation. It also provides training for those that work in the food sector. East Northamptonshire Council leader, councillor Steven North said: “Flava Jacks is a perfect example of a business working with the council to make sure it starts off with the information it needs to succeed. “ENC is committed to helping businesses thrive in the district and I urge anyone thinking of starting one to contact us for advice.” The advice given to Flava Jack’s also helped maximise its budget, ensuring it only spent on the essentials, saving it money to invest elsewhere. This all led to a food safety inspection in May 2018, which resulted in a top Food Hygiene Rating score of five. Lisa and Jermaine Jackson, owners of Flava Jacks, said: “Starting up any business is daunting, but laying the foundations before you begin is essential. “Speaking to East Northamptonshire Council really helped start Flava Jacks, as its Health Protection team gave us the right advice to make sure we were prepared. “Knowing what food safety regulations we had to adhere to, made sure we got it right from the start, saving us time, money and stress. “If you’re thinking of starting a food business, speak to your council first.” Find out how the council can help at www.east-northamptonshire. gov.uk/foodsafety.

Housing Group joins national campaign to tackle domestic abuse ONE of the Midlands’ largest housing providers, Longhurst Group, has become one of more than 50 housing associations to have signed up to a new national campaign to help tackle domestic abuse in its communities across the Midlands and East of England. Longhurst Group manages more than 4,000 properties across Northamptonshire, through its member company Spire Homes. The Make a Stand campaign centres around a pledge which has been developed by the Chartered Institute of Housing in partnership with Women’s Aid and the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance, (DAHA). It consists of four commitments which housing organisations can make to support people that live and work in housing who are experiencing domestic abuse. Executive director of housing services at Longhurst Group Sharon Guest, said: “This is a fantastic campaign and we are very proud to make a stand to help address such a serious issue. “We wholeheartedly support what the CIH, Women’s Aid and the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance have proposed. “Tackling domestic abuse is absolutely crucial and housing associations are uniquely placed to
understand and help provide both support and potential solutions. We know that, often, new customers who may be homeless or at risk of becoming homeless are survivors of domestic abuse, as are as many of our existing customers “We understand how difficult it can be to break the cycle, with survivors experiencing, on average, 35 incidents before reporting abuse. “We will do everything we can to help them, and often their children, to start again in a new home and a new community.”
She added: “It’s vital housing associations and local authorities work together to not only provide solutions for survivors, but also help improve our response and raise awareness of the issue.” CIH president Alison Inman said: “I’m thrilled Longhurst Group has signed the Make a Stand pledge as this could make a very real difference in local communities. “Domestic abuse is one of the biggest problems we face today. Millions of people are affected and two women a week are being killed by their partner or ex-partner. “Housing organisations house and employ millions of people and it is our duty to do more to tackle this issue. These are our homes, our

people and this is our problem. “By signing the Make a Stand pledge Longhurst Group has committed to supporting people in its communities and it is no exaggeration to say that this could save a life.” Co-founder of DAHA Kelly Henderson, said: “We are very proud to be part of this pledge and commend Longhurst Group for signing up. “We know the housing sector plays a crucial role in recognising and responding to domestic abuse and this pledge is a really easy way to not only demonstrate commitment but also take the first practical steps to improving the response for both staff and residents.”
Chief executive of Women’s Aid Katie Ghose said: “For thousands of women and children across the country, their home is the most dangerous place they can be. “By signing up to the Chartered Institute of Housing’s Make a Stand pledge, Longurst Group has sent out a powerful message to survivors of domestic abuse that they are not alone and that there is help and support available to them.” Make a Stand was launched as part of CIH president Alison Inman’s presidential appeal and Jim

Strang has already agreed to continue to support the same cause when he takes the helm in September. Organisations can sign the Make a Stand pledge on CIH’s website and receive a support pack and other information to help them put the commitments in the pledge in place. The four commitments set out are: • To put in place and embed a policy to support residents who are experiencing domestic abuse. • To make information about national and local domestic abuse support services available on your website and in other places which are easily accessible to residents and staff. • To put in place a HR policy and procedure on domestic abuse, or to incorporate this into an existing policy, to support members of staff who are experiencing domestic abuse. • Appoint a champion in your organisation to own the activity you are doing to support people experiencing domestic abuse. Look after trees
RESIDENTS in East Northamptonshire are being asked to help cultivate a strategy on how East Northamptonshire Council looks after trees in the district. The guidance and principles of the strategy will cover common issues with trees, as well as supplementary information on how the council intends to manage its trees. Private tree owners will also be able to use the strategy. Leader of East Northamptonshire Council, councillor Steven North, said: “The flora and fauna of East Northamptonshire is something very close to my heart and having this strategy to help focus how the council tends for its trees is very important. “Looking to the future, we hope to have this document adopted by all local town and parish councils to create a sense of continuity, across the district, for our residents.”

Service gets grant
EAST Northants Community Service, (ENCS), a hub of vital services for vulnerable people in Northamptonshire run by East Northants Faith Group, will receive ÂŁ65,908 from Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales to support its substance addiction rehabilitation service. Residents of Recovery House follow a six-month, 12-step programme, after which they move to a ‘dry’ aftercare house and return to normal life, free from the burden of life-controlling addictions. The programme’s success is clear - 80 per cent of ex-residents did not use drugs or alcohol within a year of leaving the dry house. The grant from Lloyds Bank Foundation will fund Recovery House’s project manager, who makes sure participants receive all the support they need, from reconnecting with family and reducing debts to finding meaningful ways for former addicts to re-integrate back into the community without falling back into damaging habits. Drug addiction in Northamptonshire verges on double the national average and alcohol addiction is more prevalent too, meaning Recovery House and the other services provided by ENCS are vital to the community. Project manager of Recovery House Matt Baker said: “ENCS provides this rehabilitation service free to the client with the support of 30 volunteers. “Housing benefit only covers part of the cost of putting each client through the programme and we are dependent on funders such as the Lloyds Bank Foundation to continue the service. Recovery House has been open for three years and there is a clear demand to expand the service for women as well as men. This grant secures the service for the next three years and allows us to start looking towards future expansion.â€? Paul Streets OBE, chief executive of Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales said: “Charities like ENCS are the lifeblood of so many communities and so vital in tackling disadvantage in towns and cities up and down the country. “ We’re proud that, with the support of Lloyds Bank, we’re able to support ENCS and their substance addiction rehabilitation service, and I look forward to seeing the great things they achieve in the coming years.â€? East Northants Community Service is one of five charities in the East Midlands supported in Lloyds Bank Foundation’s latest funding round.

IN MY OPINION
Remember, auditing is paid by consumers and tax payers by Andy Mercer
MONOPOLIES are bad for the public. Almost as bad are markets dominated by just a few suppliers. A market with just, say, four major suppliers, collectively having 97 per cent market share is clearly a problem. That exactly describes the market for auditing large organisations, (such as the FT350 companies). Auditors are people paid large amounts of money to check the accounts of companies, councils, charities, and the like. The companies do not get to choose whether to be audited – the law makes them. You can think of it as a form of taxation. The only reason such a draconian system can be justified is if it brings some huge gain to society. In the case of auditing, this is the prevention of fraud and company bankruptcies. And yet, Carillion has gone bust. When a company like Carillion goes under,
the trouble is shared far and wide. About 50,000 jobs are at risk, along with many public sector projects. How then did Carillion happen? At this point, we don’t know the answer to that question. However, we do know: KMPG audited Carillion’s accounts Deloitte advised Carillion’s board on risk management Ernst & Young were consulted on recovery plans. That left just one of the ‘Big Four’ auditors uninvolved, Price-Waterhouse-Cooper. So when Carillion went bust, guess who were appointed as advisers to the Official Receiver – PriceWaterhouse-Cooper! One does not have to be an expert on competition law to see something fishy here. You might think this is just an issue for ‘Big Business’, but it isn’t. Councils also have to be audited and their auditors are also usually from the ‘Big Four’. Moreover, whenever councils have to hire
consultants, it is usually one of the Big Four as well. Overall, that’s a lot of public money going into just four companies. These issues have been noticed upon high. Two House of Commons select committees have criticised both Carillion and its auditors. However, they don’t stop there. They have called for the break up of the ‘Big Four’ auditing firms. (And for their consultancy arms to be hived off.) In Northamptonshire, we had our Carillion epiphany several years ago, when a NCC contract went bad. We steered clear of them after that, and so were spared the worst impact of their collapse. Auditing imposes costs upon companies and councils. Ultimately, those costs are paid for by consumers and council-tax payers. In return for that money, auditors must help prevent disasters like Carillion. That worked really well, didn’t it?
LETTERS
We need all types of transport to boost the economy, not just cars TO THE EDITOR: Further to the letter in last month’s Reporter on traffic snarl-ups. They are results of two main political parties, Conservative and Labour, as well as other parties, not
putting enough effort into opening up the railways when there is a lot bigger population in the country. When I was taught by an expert geography master with top quality qualifications, he always said, that
you need all forms of transport, not just roads, for a good economy and the efficient running of England, Scotland and Wales. There are a lot of places in Northamptonshire and throughout
the UK, with poor or no connections, so people cannot run businesses efficiently. Opening up the railways would also cut a lot of of pollution. Jack Rickard

Waste not, want not NEVER before has our waste and recycling been in the news so much. From single use plastic bottles and straws to ear buds, baby wipes and coffee cups, we are now all united in our desire to do better by the environment and our oceans. So it is timely that East Northamptonshire Council has signed a new deal to better manage waste and recycling throughout the area and to help residents recycle more and waste and litter less. The new seven year contract to provide rubbish, recycling and street cleaning services in the district has been signed by Steven North, leader of East Northamptonshire Council and Paul Taylor, Group Chief Executive of FCC Environment (UK) Limited. The new £20m contract, which will save council tax payers more than £3m over the seven years, has a strong focus on high standards of customer service, and includes opportunities for the council and its new contractor FCC Environment to develop services in line with innovations emerging within the waste sector such as the potential use of alternative fuel vehicles during the life of the contract and potentially into an extension. Residents will continue to receive the same fortnightly recycling and refuse collections as they currently do. If changes to collection days are necessary to improve efficiency, they will be communicated well in advance to avoid any confusion or inconvenience. Trade waste will also continue to be collected in the same way and the Garden Waste Club remains open for residents to join to recycle their green waste. The new contract will begin
when the existing one expires at the end of this month. Councillor North said: “We’re committed to providing a reliable and convenient waste collection service which promotes recycling and represents value for money. “This new contract will ensure we continue to deliver first-class waste collection and street cleaning services to our residents - who work hard to recycle as much as possible. “Together, we will continue protecting our environment by sending more and more of our household waste for recycling.” Waste services manager Charlotte Tompkins said: “We will be collecting the same refuse and recycling in the same bins. “Collections days may change to accommodate all the new houses built in the district and to allow us to ensure we are still using the most fuel efficient routes. Otherwise, it’s collection business as usual.” Group Chief Executive of FCC Environment Paul Taylor said: “FCC Environment is one of the UK’s leading waste and recycling businesses serving the needs of some 60 local authorities. “We process 1.6 million tons of recycling each year and generate 102 MW of green energy from the waste that cannot be recycled. “We are delighted to be bringing our experience to residents of East Northamptonshire and look forward to working closely with the council to exceed the communities expectations.” The council said staff employed by the current contractor, Kier will transfer to FCC and there are no expected redundancies. The council has used its own finances to purchase the fleet up front at the beginning of the contract.

Crowds have a knock-out time at rugby club’s extravanganza AN ‘It’s a Knockout’ fun day was held at Rushden and Higham Rugby club to raise fuinds for Cynthia Spencer Hospice and MIND. The event was well supported by local businesses and families. Nearly £7,000 was raised this year and over the period the event has been running some £50,000 has been raised for Cynthia Spencer Hospice and other local charities. Rushden Chichele Rotary Club, Rushden Round Table and the Cynthia Spencer Hospice got together to organise the family fun day. Judy Webb, from Rushden Chichele Rotary Club, has masterminded the Day for the past seven years. This year, 16 teams from local businesses and organisations took part in the event arranged through We’re A Knockout, a leading U.K. event planner. Although safety is a priority the teams took all the spills and thrills in their stride and often ended up as a heap of Telly-Tubbies or fourperson sack racers. Winners of the Team event was Wykes Engineering, (pictured). Visitors made full use of the children’s entertainment area and all the food and fun outlets surrounding the main arena.
Tree house unveiled
THANKS to some excellent fund raising by the Friends of Bozeat School and donations from the local community, a new tree house adventure trail has been created at the school. This is the latest in a series of improvements to the outdoor areas that has enabled our pupils to spend more time outside exploring the environment As part of our outdoor explorations, last term pupils from Year 2 visited a primary school in London to experience life in a multi-cultural city school. This term, the London school visited us to experience the great out doors in Northamptonshire where we had tractor rides, petted lambs and watched cows being milked at a local farm. Outdoor adventures have also taken pupils to Hunstanton beach. While there, the older children looked at the negative impact plastic pollution can have on the environment. They also studied the actions we can take to prevent this through recycling, improved packaging and very simply taking care with our rubbish. To find out more about the school and its events, go to bozeat.northants.sch.uk or mail admin@bozeat.northants.sch.uk

TABLE TENNIS
FOOTBALL
New players needed to boost competition
Appeal for players
TABLE tennis players are needed to help boost the sport. The Wellingborough and District Table Tennis League had its heyday in the 1970s, with membership exceeding 100 clubs but by the late 1990s the league membership had been halved. Currently, Rushden is represented by Higham Harriers Table Tennis Club, playing out ofthe Church Hall in Park Road, Rushden, and membership of 29 teams an all-time low. During the past, teams competing from Rushden alone have been St Peter’s Church, Highfield Baptist Church, Rushden Athletic Club, Rushden Working Men’s Club, Rushden Sports Centre, Rushden Conservatives, Rushden Cricket Club, Rushden Golf Club, Rushden Youth Centre, Rushden Co-operative Shoe Factory and the Co-Operative Shops, Park Road
Baptist, Rushden YMCA and Youth Centre, Taylor Woodrow, Rushden Park, Wagon & Horses, Cox & Wright and RAF Association. With a strong financial base, the league is in no danger of folding and the league’s divisions cover all abilities and need new players, male or female, of all ages – the range at the moment is between 11 and 80 years. Recent changes mean matches are now played up to 11 points, best of five ends. Why not give it a go as table tennis has recently shown to improve your mental function as well as to help keep you fit? For further information on how to join in and get involved, contact Chas Allen by email at derekcharlesallen@gmail.com, or telephone him on 01933 412378 for further details.
NEW young players are needed for one of the area’s leading football clubs.

He has also coached in New York in exclusive training camps. He has full FA coaching badges and is CRB checked. Wellingborough Town Football Club is a Charter Standard Development club.
Its purpose is for youngsters to have fun playing football, develop their football skills and progress into senior football within the Wellingborough Town under-18, reserve and first teams. If you and your child is interested contact Jonathan on 07540 769740. Alternatively, ring Jem Perkins on 07407 685548.
At the double
RUSHDEN Welcome United is celebrating the double.
The team beat FC Phoenix to the league by one point and beat them again 4-2 on penalties at Sixfields Stadium in the Roger Gamble Cup after a 3-3 draw in normal time, (below). Player/manager Nick Payne said after its achievement this year the team was looking forward to the coming season hoping to improve even more.

JULY IN THE GARDEN – by Milton Ernest Garden Centre
A
Tropical colour in your garden
LTHOUGH summer in England can be hot we are not likely to reach the temperature and rainfall of tropical regions where most flowers are brilliantly coloured. However we can create similar spectacles by selecting plants that together give a tropical feel to our gardens but will happily grow in our climate. Alstromerias are a great group of low growing summer flowering perennials that require little maintenance and are now available in a vast range of bright hot colours. They are excellent when planted at the front of the borders or in pots where they produce nonstop flowers from June to October. The stems can be used for flower arranging and should be pulled not cut from the plant. The more you pull the stems the more new shoots the plant produces. Alstromerias should be grown in well drained soil in a sunny place and covered with mulch in winter until really established. If you are growing these plants in pots use John Innes No. 2 compost and give protection during severe winters. A gorgeous new variety to look out for is Indian Summer with pale and vivid orange outer petals and
yellow inner petals and striking dark markings. Dahlias are another group that have enjoyed a lot of Growers attention over the last few years. There are now some lovely perennial varieties which although subject to frost damage if planted six inches deep in the ground and covered with thick mulch in winter will survive and thrive. Dahlias grown in tubs they should be protected in a conservatory, covered porch or greenhouse. Plant the tubers or plants in a rich organic soil or compost and protect the young plants from frost. Remove the growing tip from young plants to encourage branching and so more flower buds. The plants are very easy to grow but can be subject to aphids or earwig damage so spray with Provado when any are seen. By continually cutting the flowers for vases indoors encourages a lot more flowers. Strawberry Bon Bon and Amazon are two stunning small decorative varieties while Bishop of Lancaster is bright red. Crocosmias are a vibrant range of hardy perennials that grow well in sun or shady places. There is an ever increasing range of varieties with more being added every year. They flower from July until a really hard frost often into December. The dazzling range of colours becomes more and more tropical.
They are always a successful plant to grow in normal well drained soil and are pest and disease free. Columbus and Buttercup are both good shining golden yellow varieties with Emily Mckenzie a dramatic orange with red centres. Rudbeckias are very hardy daisy like flowers which are also very easy to grow in normal well drained soil in full sun. There are annual and perennial types and if the annual seeds are sown in March they will be flowering by July until October. The vibrant yellow and orange flowers are now accompanied by new red varieties. Butterscotch is the honey and orange colour that the name suggests. Canna Lilies are perhaps the most tropical plants we can grow. They are traditionally grown as centre pieces or accent plants in large bedding plant displays. They will flower from July onwards but when the foliage turns yellow and droops down stop watering and allow the plant to dry completely to over winter successfully. Protect with a thick layer of mulch and start watering and feeding again the following March. If growing in pots stop watering completely and put somewhere frost free for winter. Tropicana Black is a must variety to grow with the electrifying contrast of the orange flowers and very dark leaves.

In 1980, Kirk Brandon formed Theatre Of Hate from the ashes of heralded punk band The Pack. Joining Kirk on vocals were notable punk musicians Stan Stammers and Luke Rendall, along with old school friend, Steve Guthrie and Canadian born John “Boy” Lennard, who revolutionised the band’s sound with his haunting sax lines. Theatre Of Hate’s debut double-A-side single, “Legion”/”Original Sin”, topped the independent chart in 1980, and “Westworld”, their debut album, produced by Mick Jones from The Clash and released in 1982,held the number one position for 21 weeks. The single taken from the album, “Do You Believe In The Westworld?” has become an anthem and is still widely played in clubs and on international radio, as well as featuring on numerous compilation albums. Supporting the likes of The Clash & Ian Dury lead to Theatre Of Hate headlining major venues across the UK & Northern Europe. Theatre Of Hate imploded in 1982, with Kirk taking Stan forward to form Spear Of Destiny, but the band has resurfaced over the years to play some very special shows.
