EDUCATIONAL CAMPUS

PUNE, INDIA

ontemporary school design rarely reflects a desire to create an environment where learning could be encouraged by the building itself. The school system is an outcome of industrialistic colonial rule. The schools were rather similar to warehouses where students are moulded to learn in a particular way ,creating identical products irrespective of their aptitudes and passions. What if we look into 'GURUKULAM'

Inculcating a healthy lifestyle Administration block and parking slots are zoned with proximity to the main entry.Thereby restricting the movement of vehicles inside the campus and encouraging pedestrian circulation.. Emphasis of micro climate The classrooms are arranged considering the potential of site, that is the lake. Oriented in such a way that the longer side face north and south. Amalgam of unifunctional spaces Functional spaces such as canteen and open air theatre are treated as a single entity, used subsequently during school hours and after school hours. The skill based learning The difference at this school is academics wrapped in rich layers of experiential environmental learning along with the art of theatre. These frames occupy an extended time slot each day according to students interest. The site is taken as a whole in terms of learning environment. Residential quarters skill based education is efficiently incorporated in the residential quarters. taking into consideration the ancient gurukulam system of teaching, trees circumambulated by a raised platform helps create a similar guru-student interactive ambience akin to ancient times.

his project, to house the construction workers, proposes a modular system of sustainable dwelling units with quality living environment. The dwelling is designed in such a way that it can easily adapt to the changing needs of the inhabitants and can either grow, reduce or can be moved to other sites. Made of scaffolding and shuttering panels, the design proposal is easy to begin with as these materials already exist with the builder. Since scaffolding structures are familiar to workers the structure can be easily assembled, dismantled and transported. The dwelling unit gives the choice of material to the dweller. They can be from a wide range of selection such as waste cement bags to salvaged plywood panel. Above all they can be reused by the builder for housing projects

A RECREATIONAL CORRIDOR

THE GREEN SPINE

TRIVANDRUM, INDIA

A public gathering space is an essential thread of the urban fabric. It is critical in determining the socio-economic development of a region. A congregation space equally identifiable by all the classes of the social strata. Such a space also helps in de-stressing the people from the frenzified race for progress. Trivandrum is a city now home to a vivid social community that ranges from the ‘orthodox pre-gen’ govt officials to the ‘tech-savvy new gen‘ youth The city though very diverse in character is limited in its share of public congregation spaces. In the present scenario, the entire city population depends entirely on two major recreational hubs- the Museum and the Shangumugham Beach. There has been no developmental interventions in these hubs to cater to the change in the city’s social fabric. The need for a well designed and planned public congregation space accessible for the entire city population is inevitable. This design thus is a decentralised recreational ribbon along the banks of the Parvathy Puthanar, meandering alongside the NH47 Bypass- A Recreation Corridor, The Green Spine.

The proposed Green Spine is highly feasible as it is easily accessible by the entire urban society and helps in decentralising the overdependency of the Museum and Shangumugham social hubs for public recreation and congregation. The linearity of the spine thus help in extending the outreach of the various user-groups rather than limiting it to a very regional community space. 28

Noise pollution from bus terminal in the east and industrial estate in the west. Tree belt designed to act as acoustical and pollution barrier. Built form in the north of site prevents noise ingress from vehicular traffic ion the NH Bypass.

Three main nodes act as access points to site from the NH Bypass, Bus terminal and the National Waterway 3. The origial grid of the site is tilted by 45 deg to contain the circulation paths.

Each node is so positioned as to present wider views of the waterbody compared to its predecessor. This adds to experiential quality of the site, opening up its view prospect as one moves forward.

These nodes when further developed, form strong visual focii, defining circulation paths between them that connects the By pass to the Green Spine. Each axis is defined by its focal nodes as well as the zones existing between the paths.

The initial focus upon entry is the Amphitheatre , guided by a kiosks and cafes on one side and an avenue of trees on the other, constricting vistas to the subsequent zones.Amphitheatre provides an informal platform for showcasing events- unifying the diverse community.

The meandering walkway then directs the users to the sculpture yard. A flexible multifunctional space aimed at boosting the cultural and heritage of the city. This node is symbolic of the associated theme of that particular park.

The walkway leads to a viewing pavilion followed by a childrens’ park, terminating at the Green Spine; the pedestrian and cycling recreational corridor with intermittent Boat jetty’s for access to the water transport service along the Parvathy Puthanar. 30

Trivandrum ,a rainbow city; home to a diverse and vivid social community. Through various studies and surveys, it is observed that community gathering spaces that glorify the rich cultural heritage of the region are effective in shortening the generation gap within a community. A feature like an amphitheatre stages a platform to potray and exhibit the fore-mentioned culture and heritage and also subsequently act as a community binder bringing together people from different walks of life. Cafes and kiosks are provided adjacent to the amphitheatre thereby further accentuating the spatial hierarchy. 01. sculpture 02. amphitheatre 03. green room

The meandering wall seperating the exhibition space and the children’s park is bifunctional- it acts as a display screen for artwork on one side and a personalised graffitti wall on the other The position of the graffitti wall next to the children’s park helps in creating a very playful yet unique artwork that adds to the lively character of the space. It also helps in inculcating a personal attachment with the space at an individual level.

06 CENTRE FOR PERFORMING ARTS PRAGATI MAIDAN NEW DELHI, INDIA

“If all theatres were closed down one day, a large percentage of the people would know nothing about it until weeks later, but if one were to eliminate cinemas and television, the very next day the whole population would be in an uproar. (Bim Mason, Street Theatre and Other Outdoor Performance (London New York: Routledge, 1992)

A multi-use performance space that is intended for use by various types of the performing arts, including

dance, music and theatre. Performance venues and training spaces in India tend to be exclusive, with little engagement or interaction with the general public on a daily basis. Their private functions are typically hidden away behind closed doors and can only be experienced by attending a show. This thesis will therefore attempt to uncover ways that the public can better engage with the functions of a performing arts venue.

Located in the capital city, the site is visited by both national and international tourists and the local public. Proximity to Mandhi House a cultural hub in New Delhi, also adds to its importance. Pragati Maidan has been playing the role of a convention centre since its inception in 1972. It is one of the most active recreational and commercial spaces and has been dynamically adapting itself to the various activities throughout the year.

The client required a house which is much private contrary to the open houses which we see today. So the design ivolved taking into these consideration. The level difference of the site from the road made it easier to design an inward looking house. The design consist of two courtyards which seemlesly blend with the verandah and the living. They helped to bring in more light and also to extend the sight lines thus creating a spacious feel in the interiors.
