TEST INFORMATION Sweden has the lowest mortality rate in the world in terms of children 0-6 years. Axkid is a Swedish car seat companies, and therefore follows the latest standard tests in the industry.

PLUSTEST Plus Test is an optional supplementary test, carried out by car seat manufacturer who wishes to demonstrate qualities beyond those included mandatory for approval of a child restraint. At the Plus Test measures also the forces that the child’s neck is exposed to in a frontal collision. Plus test is an additional test which is done on chairs intended for rearwardfacing carseats since no forwardfacing carseats would ever pass this test. A Plus tested car seat gives the child a little extra security and an approved plus test demonstrates that the seat is of the highest quality.
REACH REACH is a chemical legislation replacing large parts of the chemical rules in force before 1 June 2007 in the EU and in Sweden. The rules contained in the EC Regulation and should therefore be applied directly by the companies and not be translated into Swedish regulations. REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals. In Swedish: Registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemicals. The Regulation entered into force across the EU on 1 June 2007 but the provisions of REACH into effect in stages.

The idea of rearward-facing car seats for children came from Sweden in the 1960s, the brainchild of Professor Bertil Aldman of Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. Professor Aldman took his inspiration from the special seats used by Gemini mission astronauts during take-off and landing, which were moulded to distribute G forces across the whole back. The principle behind rearward-facingchild car seats is exactly the same. In the event of a frontal impact collision, the whole of the child’s back takes the strain of the impact, not just its much weaker neck. The safest way of travelling in a car is rearwards. It would actually be better for all of us to sit facing the rear of the car, but given the existing designs of our cars, this is not feasible for adults. Young children, however, can and should travel facing the rear of the car for as long as possible. In a frontal impact collision, the head of a forward-facing car occupant is thrown forward with considerable force. If a child weighing 15kg travelling in a forward-facing car seat is involved in a crash in 50km/h the neck will be exposed to forces equal to 200kg if instead the child is sitting in a rearward-facing seat forces will only be 50kg. This is crucial due to that the child’s neck hasn´t gained full stability until the age of 6 years old. Its momentum propels it downwards onto the breastbone and then back up again. An adult neck can withstand this strain relatively well, but a small child’s neck cannot. Given that frontal impact collisions are the commonest type of crash and often the most serious type too, it is particularly important for very young children to sit in rearward-facing seats.

SWEDEN FIRST Thanks to Professor Aldman, rearward-facing child seats came into widespread use in Sweden much earlier than elsewhere. The benefits are reflected in crash statistics. Research on data from the Swedish insurance company Folksam,for instance, shows that the risk of a young child being killed or seriously injured is five times greater in a forward-facing seat than in a rearward-facing one. Volvo cars have also conducted test and measured the neck forces to be 6,6 times bigger for a forward-facing seat compared to a rearward facing. If you compare Swedish crash statistics with those of countries where most children travel facing forwards, the differences are striking.
As Axkid is a Swedish brand designed in close cooperation with the Swedish car industry we have all the input and facts from many years of travelling rearward facing for children.
