History of Warley Woods 1. Warley Hall Estate, created by Henry VIII in the 16th century. 2. Landscape architect Humphty Repton designed a picturesque landscape for the site in 1794-95. The site was surrounded by fields and woodland at this time. 3. The Galton family commissioned Robert Lugar to design a gothic mansion, comleted in 1819, known as Warley Abbey. 4. At the beggining of the 20th century new houses started to be built on the land. 5. Residents dissaproved of the loss of green space and Warley Woods became a public park in 1909. It featured an ornamental garden and ornate shelters. 6. A golf course was established in 1921. 7. The abbey was demolished in 1957.
