WELCOME With this season we complete our milestone 40th anniversary programme. I’m delighted that we follow a star-studded Autumn with an equally eminent Spring. There are some mouth-watering events and series to look forward to, many of them created exclusively by or for Turner Sims.

Our Associate Artists the Elias Quartet and London Sinfonietta reach the end of their formal three-year partnerships with two fascinating takes on music history. Schumann’s three quartets are comparative rarities in chamber music programmes and the Elias’ three-concert series plus associated talks, specially created for Turner Sims, will be an opportunity to re-evaluate these important works in the composer’s canon. Meanwhile, the London Sinfonietta and composer Fraser Trainer guide us through the music of the last 100 years. In our jazz line-up it’s a particular pleasure to present a special weekend focus on saxophonist John Surman. John’s music has been a regular part of the Turner Sims programme over the past two decades and in his 70th birthday year it is fitting to celebrate the work of this master instrumentalist and composer. Reaching 70 in a different
way is the Borodin Quartet who stop off on a worldwide tour to perform works from two composers with whom they are synonymous: Beethoven and Shostakovich. And with Pascal Rogé, joined by his wife Ami, presenting French repertoire; Chopin competition winner Yundi performing an all-Chopin programme; and Emma Kirkby exploring the golden age of Early Music there are opportunities galore to see artists in repertoire for which their interpretations are justifiably celebrated. Our Ruby Campaign continues apace as we seek to deliver the second phase of our revamp to the building following the Summer 2014 refurbishment of the auditorium seating - I’m hugely grateful to everyone who has supported the appeal thus far. Do consider helping us achieve our plans as we reach the end of the 40th anniversary. PIANO SERIES
The music of Chopin and some of the defining works written for the piano feature in the second half of the series performed by some of the instrument’s greatest exponents, many of them competition winners.
Two prize winners from the Chopin Competition – Ingolf Wunder from 2010 and Yundi, outright winner in 2000 – make their debuts with Chopin and, in Wunder’s case Liszt too. Another winner – of the 2012 Leeds Competition – is Federico Colli and his debut showcases his approach to a range of repertoire, from Mozart’s glorious variations to Scriabin’s technically challenging last sonata.
A different challenge is faced by Christian Blackshaw who closes the series with Schubert’s monumental last three sonatas. Lastly Pascal Rogé, known for his solo and chamber recitals here, visits with wife Ami Rogé for a magical evening of music for four hands on one piano. French repertoire, of course, is to the fore.

All three present new projects at Turner Sims this season: a celebratory weekend for John Surman, the world premiere of a new project for Courtney
Pine and Zoe Rahman and Andy Sheppard showcasing music from his new quartet album. New material also comes from Norwegian Marius Neset whilst American Ravi Coltrane completes an extraordinary quintet of saxophonists. Legendary Brazilian group Azymuth revisit their 1975 debut album Azimuth, and we journey from Brazil to Manchester
to welcome GoGo Penguin, whose debut comes hot on the heels of earning a 2014 Mercury nomination for their acclaimed album v2.0. Finally no celebration past and present would be complete without a vocal element. Ian Shaw and swinging New York band Hot Sardines both guarantee celebratory occasions whatever repertoire they are presenting.

Master performer Amjad Ali Khan appears with his two virtuoso sons, whilst two aspects of British folk are represented by The Unthanks featuring Tyneside sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank, and the rising star family members of the Sussex-based
Young Coppers. European rising stars come in the shape of Finnish band Frigg who showcase their energetic Nordic fiddle sounds for the first time, and Portuguese singer Gisela João whose exciting new take on fado is making waves in her Portuguese homeland. At a global level Iain Stewart and Callum Roberts offer views on oil and the

Following his year-long immersion in song in 1840 and orchestral music in 1841 Robert Schumann spent 1842 focussing almost exclusively on chamber music, producing three string quartets, a piano quartet and a piano quintet. For the last of their three years as Associate Artists the Elias Quartet
present an exclusive series centred around the three quartets. Across three concerts the Elias place Schumann’s works in context with the composers who influenced him, as well as British music from the past 40 years and today. Each event is preceded by an introduction to Schumann the composer and the music for the evening.

Haydn’s work with its bird-like grace notes begins the first concert in the series which also includes the first of Schumann’s works. Britten’s quartet by contrast is one of his last works, described by The Observer at its premiere in 1976 as one of his most enduring creations.

For this special occasion they are joined by one of the world’s great Schumann interpreters, pianist Jonathan Biss, for the composer’s Piano Quintet. The first pairing of piano with string quartet by a Romantic composer, the work is dedicated to Schumann’s wife Clara, herself a renowned pianist. Emily Howard’s work receives its second performance following its premiere in May by the Elias.

In the 80s he was one of the first black British jazz artists to make a serious mark on the jazz scene and some 20 plus years on, Courtney Pine continues to break new ground with a string of highly acclaimed recordings and prestigious Industry awards. With his latest project, which receives its world premiere this evening, he brings the most intimate show of his long and celebrated career to the stage, playing bass clarinet accompanied only by fellow Mercury nominee and MOBO Award winning pianist, Zoe Rahman. A vibrant and highly individual pianist/composer, her style is deeply rooted in jazz yet it reflects her classical background, British/Bengali heritage and very broad musical taste.

Combining funk, soul and jazz with Samba, Azymuth are the legendary Brazilian three piece orchestra who were responsible for creating a new sound and genre of their own – ‘Samba Doido (Crazy Samba)’. Tonight they revisit their legendary debut album, released in the summer of 1975, Azimuth. It is the band’s definitive work, a raw stew of psychedelic guitar fuzz, tripped out space-funk and lush jazz soundscapes. 2015 sees them reissue this seminal album to mark its 40th anniversary.

Ingolf Wunder grabbed the attention of a wide public when he won second prize at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 2010, the year of Chopin’s bicentenary. For his Turner Sims debut he performs Chopin and Liszt including the Hexaméron Variations. The composers were friends for a period when both were in Paris, and in 1837,
Princess Belgiojoso invited six composers, including Liszt and Chopin to write variations on a theme fromBellini’sopera Ipuritani. Liszt organised the effort, and composed the introduction, interludes and finale, but the most notable contribution came from Chopin, who ironically transforms the rousing martial sung chorus into a beautifully cantabile larghetto for solo piano.

Grammy-nominated saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, son of the legendary John Coltrane, has matured into an artist at the height of a career built on his talent, not his name. He has been praised for his music’s elusive beauty (Downbeat) and for his style informed by tradition but not encumbered by it (Philadelphia City Paper). Natalie Clein is in demand as a recitalist and soloist with major symphony orchestras across the world. In 2009 Turner Sims hosted Haydathon, performances of all 104 of Haydn’s symphonies in a single weekend. Now, as part of our 40th anniversary year, it’s Beethoven’s turn. With a hand-picked orchestra and choir on stage, experience all nine of Beethoven’s symphonies in one day in the order in which they were composed. In 2011 Marius Neset released his debut album Golden Xplosion and became one of the most talked-about newcomers on the European jazz scene. Yundi is a sensation in his native China – a pianist with the fanbase of a rock star. But that’s just the packaging: around the world, he’s quickly building a reputation as one of his generation’s most poetic and assured interpreters of Chopin, having become the youngest pianist to win the International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition in 2000, at the age of 18. This lovely programme – including Chopin’s complete cycle of Twenty-four Preludes – will disclose the artistry behind the glamour.

There are spaces for wheelchair users in the auditorium. Registered disabled customers may bring a companion free of charge. Parking spaces for blue badge holders are available close to the building and there is good access to Box Office, bar and toilet facilities. Though it is not essential, we recommend you book in advance so that we can readily provide assistance.
There is an induction loop for those with impaired hearing. If you require a headset, please reserve one from the Box Office in advance. Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas of the building. Please advise the Box Office when booking so that appropriate space is provided.

Turner Sims is located in the gardens of the University of Southampton’s Highfield Campus, set back from University Road between the Nuffield Theatre and the John Hansard Gallery.
By car Free parking is available in all University car parks after 5pm on weekdays and all day at weekends.
