Spring brings a plethora of extraordinary virtuosos, anniversaries, and unlikely instrumental combinations to Turner Sims. 20 years ago, in 1996, a ground-breaking moment in jazz occurred with the release of New Conception of Jazz, an album by Norwegian keyboard player Bugge Wesseltoft which mixed improvised music with electronics and dance beats. This Spring, as part of a special focus on Norway, we welcome Bugge to Turner Sims for the first time to revisit the music he has produced in the past two decades. 1996 was a notable year for other reasons too. Legendary Greek singer Savina Yannatou and her virtuoso group Primavera en Salonico gave their first concerts in that year and have entertained audiences around the world ever since. In May we bring their latest programme to the UK for the first time: a celebration of the extraordinarily diverse cultures and evocative sounds of their home town Thessaloniki.

Like Bugge Wesseltoft, Norwegian tuba player Daniel Herskedal is an artist who has taken his instrument of choice in many new directions. In a project devised specially for us, Daniel and his trio will perform music from his sublime album Slow Eastbound Train, backed by a string orchestra from the University. Opportunities for young people to see, hear, meet and work alongside professionals are at the heart of our learning programme and you can find plenty of examples in the season. Inspiring and intriguing musical partnerships are much in evidence this season. Enjoy the celebrated kora and cello combination of Ballake Sissoko and Vincent Segal showcasing material from their new album, double basses times two in the shape of Christian McBride and Edgar Meyer, Britten Sinfonia’s fascinating trio combination of flute, viola and harp performing Debussy, Takemitsu and Bjarnason, and pianist Matthew Bourne and video artist Michael England taking as their starting point the unique analogue sound of the Memorymoog.

Our piano series continues to present the finest artists, with the line-up including an all-Chopin recital from Chopin Competition winner Yundi and culminating with a final night recital from Joanna MacGregor. Our chamber music programme meanwhile sees the Vienna Piano Trio continue their survey of Brahms’ Piano Trios as part of their role as Turner Sims Associate Artists. Vieux Farka Touré is known for his legendary status as probably the finest Desert Blues guitarist on the planet. The son of the late Malian guitar legend Ali Farka Touré, his previous collaborators include Dave Matthews, Derek Trucks, John Scofield and others on his album The Secret, and his recent work with pianist Idan Raichel on The Toure-Raichel Collective. Tonight prepare to be wowed by the ‘Hendrix of the Sahara’ and his band, a live show that has been likened to a contemporary Desert Blues equivalent of power trio Cream.

Paul Lewis performs music from two great Viennese composers and one from neighbouring Hungary. From Brahms we hear the emotionally powerful early Ballades and the Three Intermezzi, which the composer once described as ‘lullabies to my sorrows’. In between comes Schubert’s enchanting, intimate Sonata in B major. The Liszt Dante Sonata provides a vivid contrast with its high drama, heady atmospheres and magnificent virtuoso challenges.

The renowned EUCO’s programme opens with Grieg’s ever-popular suite and includes the fourth of Mozart’s five concertos for violin, written when the composer was 19. Esteemed violinist Tasmin Little joins the orchestra as soloist whilst Jane Wells’ new work incorporates solo roles for young virtuosos alongside the orchestra’s members. The programme ends with Haydn’s playful symphony.

Tim Jarvis AM is an environmental scientist, author, adventurer and public speaker, committed to finding pragmatic solutions to major environmental issues related to climate change and biodiversity loss. In this visually stunning lecture , Tim recounts the 2013 Shackleton Epic expedition where he successfully and authentically led a team to retrace the legendary polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton’s 1916 southern voyage of survival. Using the same rudimentary equipment, period clothing, and technology as Shackleton, the team sailed a replica James Caird life boat from Elephant Island to South Georgia, before climbing over its mountainous interior. This is the first time that anybody has been able to authentically recreate the Endurance expedition, regarded by many as the greatest survival journey of all time.
Norway’s Bugge Wesseltoft is one of the most notable trendsetters in contemporary European jazz. Since the 1990s he has made an impressive, truly post-modern transition from his ECM nordic jazz traditions, from playing and recording together with the likes of Jan Garbarek, Sidsel Endresen, Terje Rypdal, Nils Petter Molvaer, and Jon Eberson, to forming his renowned ‘Jazzland’ record label. In the past decade Bugge has focussed on solo work, bringing new energy and perspective to melodic piano parts that integrate new versions of great jazz standards. Twenty years on from his seminal New Conception Of Jazz release, Bugge takes a fresh look at the music that made him the musician he is today.

The Vienna Piano Trio’s Brahms series continues with the composer’s second work for the medium, completed some 28 years after his first. Brahms himself wrote to his publisher Simrock ‘You have not so far had such a beautiful trio from me and very probably have not published one to match it in the last ten years.’ The programme is completed by the last of Mozart’s six Piano Trios and Shostakovich’s work, composed in 1944 and described by one writer as ‘perhaps the greatest Piano Trio since Brahms’.

The Tannahill Weavers are one of Scotland’s premier traditional bands, performing a diverse repertoire that spans the centuries. With fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, and original ballads and lullabies, their music demonstrates to old and young alike the rich and varied musical heritage of the Celtic people, summoning rock-and-roll intensity or haunting introspection. With the release of the Tannahill’s 17th recording, Live and In Session, they are firmly established as one of the leading groups on the concert stage. From reflective ballads to footstomping reels and jigs, the variety and range of the material they perform is matched only by their enthusiasm and lively Celtic spirits. The evening opens with music from local folk musicians courtesy of the Fo’c’sle Folk Club.
Daniel Herskedal is a Norwegian instrumentalist and composer who has defied the conventions of the tuba, pushing the boundaries both technically and sonically to create a spellbinding and mesmerising sound. Based in Copenhagen, he has performed with many different artists throughout Europe, including Django Bates, City Stories, Magic Pocket and Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, but it wasn’t until 2011 when he released Neck of the Woods with saxophonist Marius Neset that the world really took notice and pushed his name to the forefront as a world class soloist. Tonight, in a project specially created for Turner Sims, his brilliant trio join forces with a string ensemble from the University of Southampton to delight with music from his highly applauded new album Slow Eastbound Train. Daniel Herskedal has established a reputation for radiant eloquence and flawless virtuosity on an instrument not easily associated with either. The Guardian

When Ballaké Sissoko and Vincent Segal released their first collaborative album, Chamber Music, they caught the music world by surprise. Everything about this duo was unexpected: Sissoko is one of Mali’s greatest exponents of the kora; joining forces in an unlikely pairing with a French cellist renowned for his work in trip-hop; and the resultant elegant, soulful music they made together. Like Toumani Diabaté, Sissoko is a griot, whose music is steeped in ancient West African traditions. He’s also a staunch innovator, as demonstrated through this collaboration with Segal – best known for his work with dub/trip hop outfit Bumcello. Their complicity is such that the kora and the cello seem to express themselves with a single voice; two sensibilities in unison. Together, they perform music from their new album, Musique de Nuit, in what promises to be a thrilling duet.

An evening of fine chamber music from Turner Sims’ Associate Artists. Flute, viola and harp may not be the most familiar trio combination, but it certainly lends itself to the rich exploration of colour and harmonies typical of Debussy’s output. A deeply expressive curiosity in soundscapes and association with visual art is also infused in the music of Icelandic composer Daníel Bjarnason, whose new work features alongside Debussy and others in this programme.
The lines between cascading kora and stately cello are wonderfully blurred, as the pair take turns to supply rhythm and melody, ranging across Malian mbalax, Brazilian flavours on Samba Tomora and deep tradition. Entrancing stuff. The Guardian

Jazz icon Christian McBride and double bass star Edgar Meyer take five minutes to answer five quick fire questions... You’re both known for being highly renowned double bass players, why did you choose that instrument to learn and master?
CM: I don’t know if I’ve mastered it, but it’s a family tradition. Both my father and great-uncle are bass players as well. EM: My father loved music and played the bass. I was asking to play as soon as I could talk. How did you first discover jazz?
CM: My bass-playing great-uncle, Howard Cooper, turned me on to jazz as a kid. EM: My father had a Count Basie record on when they brought me home from the hospital!

What inspired your new duo project?
CM: I ’ve always been one of Edgar’s biggest fans and in 2007 we played a duo concert in Aspen, Colorado. It went so well, we knew we had to do it again. EM: This is the only way I could get lessons with Christian. What can we expect from your live gig here at Turner Sims?
CM: I don’t like telling people what to expect. The unexpected is what should make you come to a concert. EM: No drums! Tell us your top five jazz tunes of all time...

Internationally acclaimed Norwegian jazz pianist Tord Gustavsen joins forces with Afghan-German vocalist Simin Tander - a rising star on the European jazz and world music scenes - for his latest project Hymns and Visions. A work that saw its beginnings with the inclusion of the hauntingly powerful Eg veit i himmerik ei borg (A Castle in Heaven) on his latest quartet release Extended Circle, Tord lends his superior skills to interpretations and elaborations of ancient Norwegian hymns and new compositions of Sufi poetry. For the first time on stage, Tord uses subtle live electronics to add depth and new layers to the sensual minimalism of his work alongside Simin’s warm and vibrant vocal art.

Winner of the 2012 Leeds International Piano Competition the Italian Federico Colli returns to Turner Sims with a recital which opens with one of Bach’s best loved keyboard works. Brahms’ arrangement of the second movement of his String Sextet was written as a birthday gift to Clara Schumann, whilst two works by Clara’s husband complete the programme. Schumann was just twenty when he completed the set of miniature dance pieces which he called Papillons, whilst the Carnival of Vienna he described as a ‘romantic spectacle’ and one critic described its ‘Flashes of humour appear at every turn; skyrockets of wit and unbridled merriment soar upwards into the skies from all sides.’

Recorders of all shapes and sizes take over Central Hall as children from schools across Southampton perform alongside renowned early music group Joglaresa. The term ‘double bass’ takes on new meaning as two of the greatest living practitioners of the instrument - jazz master Christian McBride and classical/folk/ bluegrass Renaissance man Edgar Meyer - join forces for a thrilling exploration of the deep space beyond genre and expectation. This setting provides a chance to hear each of them with a level of intimacy and detail that is rare in larger settings. Playing a stylistically diverse programme including new original music for the two of them, they will explore previously unimagined possibilities for the double bass.

Schubert’s great final string quartet concludes the programme for the Dorics on their first Turner Sims visit. The evening opens with one of Haydn’s works dedicated to Johann Tost, the former leader of his second violins at the Esterházy court. Erich Wolfgang Korngold, best known for his lushly romantic film scores, wrote a quantity of music for the concert hall and the stage, including three highly individual and melodically appealing string quartets between the years 1920 and 1945.
Matthew Bourne is a distinctive composer and player on the British new music and jazz scene. Since winning the Perrier Jazz Award in 2001, followed the next year by BBC Radio Jazz Award for Innovation, he has received commissions from Bath International Music Festival, FuseLeeds and London Sinfonietta. Tonight Matthew presents his most recent project - a programme of eerily atmospheric tracks created using the unique analogue sound of the Memorymoog (more precisely a Lintronics Advanced Memorymoog (LAMM), as modified by Rudi Linhard). The project sees Bourne collaborate for the first time with the incredible video artist Michael England - who produces beautiful videos for the likes of Elbow, Autechre and Bola. England creates evocative moving images inspired by Bourne’s cosmic sound world.

The exuberant Hot Club of Cowtown make a very welcome return to Turner Sims with their infectious blend of hot jazz and Western swing. Hot Club weave a combination of seemingly disparate styles together to magical effect - a joyful blend of danceable, swinging vivaciousness, full of raw joy and authentic energy. It takes considerable bravery to name your band after one of the greatest jazz ensembles of the last century. Hot Club get away with it because they have spirit, originality and skill that would surely have impressed Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt back in 1930s. The Guardian

With a profile and fanbase in his native China more usually associated with pop stars Yundi first shot to public attention upon winning the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw aged only 18. His all-Chopin Turner Sims recital opens with the 24 Preludes, Op 28, superbly crafted miniatures, each concise and expressive, conveying moods of joy, sorrow, or fury. The four ballades are brilliantly original works where pure music weaves mesmerising tales.

Boundless energy and country with a hot jazz swing all the way from Austin, Texas...
We’re looking forward to welcoming you back to Southampton. it’s a long way from texas though, what’s it like touring around the world?
This is the first time in a long while that we will be touring the UK in the springtime and we are excited to see all the blossoms and blue sky. Our audiences in the UK have been especially enthusiastic and loyal and that’s why we come back. Of course, playing villages in Azerbaijan and the Sultanate of Oman is also cool, but the UK is exotic and exciting in its own way, and has always deeply appreciated what we do. Your music is described as Western swing, what exactly does that mean?
Western swing is a style of dance music that came up in the American southwest in the 1920s through the 1940s. It’s a combination of traditional folk songs, jazz, blues, standards, and a general mashup of uniquely American musical styles, all blended into a swing rhythm. It features fiddle and guitar and is rustic and elegant, even the sad songs are irrepressibly optimistic.
You’ve been playing together for 15 plus years, how has the band evolved during that time?
We three love to play together and when we do, it’s as if something greater than the sum of us takes hold. We have continued to develop our own sound but never strayed too far from the core of what the band is about-a gritty, swinging, elegant hot trio sound. The satisfaction we collectively get from that is really powerful and it continues to enthrall us (and, hopefully, you too). You seem to have so much fun on stage, we bet rehearsals are a hoot - any good stories for us?
A band is like a sausage. It may be delicious but don’t ask how it’s made! Any successful band is like a musical marriage in some ways and adding new songs can be a political process. At the same time, every show is different and the audience is often the wild card that can make or break a show or a song. We once played for one person (in Lexington, Kentucky many years ago) and for many thousands at the O2 Arena with Roxy Music, and all kinds of everything in between.
When the audience is enjoying the show, that is the most satisfying aspect, and it can liberate and inspire our own playing. Tell us who your top five swing heroes are...
This year we lost one of our greatest inspirations, Johnny Gimble, who was one of the most influential and inspirational fiddle players of the past century. He continues to inspire us, though, and always will. Whit loves Frank Sinatra and Nat Cole. For fiddling Elana loves Stuff Smith and Joe Venuti and Stephane Grappelli, and all kinds of vocalists like Mildred Bailey, Kay Starr, Bing Crosby...the list is endless. They were all great innovators, each uniquely expressing themselves in effortless, swinging classiness.

Polish-born Marcin Dylla is a rare phenomenon in the recent history of classical guitar, hailed by the Washington Post as among the most gifted guitarists on the planet. He has won nineteen prestigious first prizes in guitar competitions all over the world and his live DVD featuring music by the likes of Giuliani, Rodrigo and Ponce was nominated for the equivalent of the Grammy Award in his native Poland. Tonight he makes his debut at Turner Sims.
Pascal Schumacher is considered one of the world’s leading vibraphone players, an artist with a unique aptitude and sensitivity who injects panache and flamboyance into every performance. Incorporating influences from Japanese culture into his work, Pascal has put his own spin on Orientalism, pursuing a style of minimalism from the Japanese concept of ‘wabi-sabi’, combining harmony and disorder. Tonight he presents music from his first jazz solo album Left Tokyo Right, with his excellent band.

The Vienna Piano Trio conclude their Brahms series with the composer’s last work for the medium. Composed in 1886 whilst on holiday in the Swiss resort of Hofstetten, much of the work’s material is informed by a three-note thematic starting point. Bridge’s competition-winning work established his chamber music credentials among the younger generation of British composers and was described by the music writer W W Cobbett as a work of ‘remarkable beauty and brilliance’. Ravel’s only Piano Trio references dance rhythms of his Basque country homeland, poetic forms originating in Malaya, and a passacaglia in the manner of Bach.
For years now, Tim Garland’s playing and composition have less reflected ‘influences’ than styles he has mastered – everything from Celtic music to Yellowjackets fusion, from free improvisation to classical performance, from ECM ‘third stream’ to left-field electro-acoustics. As a composer, he uses his native eclecticism and phenomenal technique to make telling and often surprising connections; as a bandleader, he creates spaces in which other musicians will surprise themselves. His electrifying quartet unites these two strands of his career in one remarkable project, melding his musical experiences together in a dynamic and virtuosic set full of interplay, sensitivity and vision. Renowned Greek vocalist and ECM recording artist Savina Yannatou brings her project Songs of Thessaloniki to the UK for the first time. Once known colloquially as the Jerusalem of the Balkans, Thessaloniki has been home to a host of cultures, religions and ethnic communities. Plunging deep into her hometown’s rich and complex history, Savina shines as a unique interpreter and spokeswoman for the city’s ghosts. Based on traditional material, and using acoustic instruments, many of which have their origins in the East, Savina and her group Primavera en Salonico create a dazzling and evocative sound.
Mendelssohn’s last major work was completed just two months before he died, and composed as an homage to his sister Fanny, bearing the title Requiem for Fanny. In contrast Jonathan Dove describes his 2001 work as ‘a serenade for someone I never met’ the commissioner asking him to commemorate her husband in a string quartet. Mozart’s work was described by its publisher in an advertisement as written ‘with that fire of the imagination and that correctness which long since won for Herr Mozart the reputation of one of the best composers in Germany’.

Emily Portman is a singer, writer and concertina player hailed as one of the new British folk scene’s most beguiling presences (Uncut). Her ability to conjure darkly surreal netherworlds where folklore and myth collide with urban landscapes has earned her high praise from critics, with her third album Coracle receiving a wave of glowing reviews since its release in June 2015. Tonight Emily performs with The Coracle Band, a stellar cast of musicians including Folk Musician of the Year 2015, Bellowhead’s Sam Sweeney and MG Boulter of the Lucky Strikes.

With 10 Oscars, 25 BAFTAs, the Palme d’Or at Cannes and a BAFTA Fellowship (amongst other awards), David Puttnam is certainly a film-producing legend. This unique, multi-media live music event features special classical arrangements of music from films including Chariots of Fire, The Mission, Midnight Express, Local Hero, Memphis Belle and The Killing Fields. Emotive music by composers as diverse as Vangelis, Ennio Morricone, Mark Knopfler, Giorgio Moroder, Howard Blake, Puccini and Fauré is performed by Sacha Puttnam to a beautiful collage of movie stills, and presented by their producer David Puttnam along with his insights into the relationship of film and music drawn from his more than 40 years making movies.

Roby Lakatos is not only a scorching virtuoso, but a musician of extraordinary stylistic versatility. Equally comfortable performing classical music as he is playing jazz and his own Hungarian folk idiom, Lakatos is the rare musician who defies definition. He is referred to as a gypsy violinist or ‘devil’s fiddler’, a classical virtuoso, a jazz improviser, a composer and arranger, and a 19th-century throwback, and he is actually all of these things at once.

World renowned pianist on life on and off stage...
tell us about the programme for your recital at Turner Sims
It’s a combination of late, heroic Beethoven and the inimitably witty Stravinsky. Stravinsky didn’t write a great deal for the piano (although he was a very handy pianist himself), but his 1924 Sonata is an overlooked masterpiece. In the space of nine minutes he manages to reference Bach, Beethoven, silent film music and jazz.
You work a lot with young people, how important do you think it is for them to experience live music?
I work with students a lot - at the Royal Academy of Music, or in festivals and summer schools like Dartington. Culture is every child’s birth right, which we have to protect. It’s really as important as reading and writing, maths and history; every child should experience music, both as a creator, a player, and a listener.
How do you prepare for solo piano recitals?
I’m preparing all the time; musicians are constantly playing, practising, studying and teaching music. So it’s really a very organic, rolling process. This particular programme contains a brand new piece for me, and works I first learnt as a student. It’s always a process of consolidation and exploration.

How about the Royal Albert Hall; the Bimhaus in Amersterdam; Salzburg’s Mozarteum; and Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. I once played in a small concert hall on Arctic Svalbard, and went sledging across the snow with twenty huskies afterwards - it was fantastic.

US pianist Darius Brubeck returns to Turner Sims with another selection of the music of his late father, Dave Brubeck, and other modern masters, with his quartet. After touring the world with Two Generations of Brubecks, Darius set up the first university jazz degree in South Africa. Expect Take Five, Unsquare Dance and more, together with Darius’ own compositions.
Joanna MacGregor brings the season to a close with a programme featuring two of Beethoven’s greatest sonatas, the mammoth Appassionata and Op 111, his final sonata and one of his brilliant sets of variations. Stravinsky acknowledged Beethoven as ‘one of the world’s greatest musical geniuses’ and his Sonata reflects the composer’s declaration in 1924 ‘to examine more closely the sonatas of the Classical masters in order to trace the direction and development of their thought in solving problems of form.’
