what

Dear Friends,

defines

us

It is with deep appreciation that we share this Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2022, detailing all that your support enabled us to do for thousands of poor and homeless women from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022.

As our guests continued to feel the ripple effects of a worldwide pandemic, facing increased food insecurity, soaring utility rates and the threat of eviction—we continued to do all that we could to help.

Our expanded Food Pantry and increased budget for rent and utility assistance provided critical financial support that often meant the difference between homelessness and housing, a guest finding herself in freefall or finding stability. And combined with the expert long-term support given through our legal, mental health, housing, employment, education and stabilization services, we offered comprehensive assistance to our community’s most vulnerable all year-through.

At Rosie’s Place, we know that change isn’t made overnight or in a straight line, but each day can get you closer. We strive to be a place where change doesn’t just start for our guests, but where it continues.

For some women, it’s a warm meal that brings a moment of comfort and peace. For others, a shower and a fresh set of clothes washes away a night spent on the street and allows for a clear head to think about next steps. Change can be tactile like sleeping in your own bed, in your own new apartment. It can inspire hope in so many ways, like that feeling of relief when a rental payment prevents eviction or that sense of accomplishment when a new job is found.

At Rosie’s Place, change sparks possibilities. Possibilities that lead to a collective call for kindness and action that defines Rosie’s Place.

Since our founding, we have demonstrated that when people come together with a shared commitment to compassion, social justice and second chances—lives are transformed. Thank you for joining us in seizing every opportunity to make a difference for every woman who needs us.

With gratitude,

sanc·tu·ary

a place of refuge and protection

For poor and homeless women who are on the streets or with nowhere safe to go, extremely hot summers and cold winters are dangerous. Our Day Shelter is open and available year-round and not only provides comfort but can save lives on extreme-weather days. The Day Shelter also provides access to lifelines like showers, toiletries, laundry, lockers, phones, computers and a way to receive mail. These essentials help women maintain their dignity, secure work or housing and connect with family and support systems.

Our 20-bed Overnight Shelter provides more than beds to women in need. With a well-equipped kitchen, dining area, laundry facilities and community space, we strive to give our guests comfort and compassion during their 21-day stays, as we support them in starting a path toward stability.

This year, we provided safe and welcoming temporary shelter to 129 women in total, including some in extended stays due to the pandemic.

A total of 454 guests participated in our drop-in housing search support.

Further, we helped place 27 guests in stable, permanent housing, an increase of 107% over the prior year.

Disabled and living on a fixed income, Mona finds sanctuary at Rosie’s Place. From budgeting advice to blood sugar checks, her visits are very productive. She enjoys seeing friends when she’s here and on Fridays, she always checks out what movie is playing in the Sitting Room.

Irene is an elderly woman who came to Rosie’s Place after suddenly becoming homeless. We offered her sanctuary in an extended 65-day stay in our Overnight Shelter until helping her move into her own apartment.

In response to the dramatic upswing in statewide food insecurity, our Food Pantry has now tripled its prepandemic capacity. Up to 350 women per day are able to visit us, Monday through Friday, and receive groceries, including fresh food, household goods and toiletries. By year’s end, the Pantry accommodated 63,965 visits. The Pantry continues to be a critical vehicle for distributing masks, at-home COVID-19 tests and vaccine information in a community that is high-risk for serious illness from the virus.

We serve thousands of women healthy meals and celebrate events to build community in our Dining Room, 365 days each year. The increased demand on our Food Programs has climbed along with growing food insecurity across Greater Boston.

The Wellness Center at Rosie’s Place brings critical medical assistance and information to poor and homeless women who would very likely otherwise not seek such help. We partner with Boston Heath Care for the Homeless Program, Health Care Without Walls and Regis College School of Nursing to provide free access to providers, who help guests with vaccines, skin care, blood pressure, navigating our complex health care system and offer weekly wellness strategies like meditation, reiki and acupuncture. The Center promotes a holistic approach to wellness and accommodated almost 1,500 visits in the past year.

*The Boston Globe and the Greater Boston Food Bank, June 2022 **Bureau of Labor Statistics, March 2022

In addition to offering sanctuary, all of these emergency programs provide something much more intangible, but as important—a sense of community. It is through this bond of connectivity that trust develops and steps toward stability can be identified.

In the last year, our Dining Room served almost 62,000 meals, a 23% increase from the previous year.

At Rosie’s Place, sanctuary looks like:
Today in Massachusetts, one in three adults are experiencing food insecurity.* And grocery prices are up 10% from last year.**

sup·port

\ sə-ˈpȯrt \ noun

something that holds up or serves as a foundation or prop for

Finding stability is a struggle for poor women who are just one sick day away from job loss, one missed paycheck away from eviction. The tumult of housing loss can quickly lead to unemployment, homelessness and illness. We know that when a woman becomes homeless, it is extremely challenging and expensive for her to get back on her feet into stable housing. This is why we do whatever we can to prevent a guest’s eviction in the first place.

Eviction prevention is one of the goals for all of our supportive stabilization services—the Advocacy, Stabilization and Legal Programs. Our staff provide a range of supports: from navigating paperwork to contacting landlords or helping with utilities or rental assistance. Each year, Rosie’s Place helps over a thousand women stabilize their situations to avoid evictions and homelessness.

In our lobby, women can access same-day help from one of our skilled, multi-lingual Advocates. Guests can sign up for walk-in services, speak to an Advocate about urgent concerns, financial problems, transportation needs or to build a plan to work toward a stable housing or living situation. Guests can also reach an Advocate through the new Advocacy Helpline open on weekdays. In this way, women are able to access help with whatever they need from wherever they are and in their native language, because all of the Advocacy services offered on-site at Rosie’s Place have been made available remotely.

Untreated mental health issues and substance use affect more than half of the women we serve at Rosie’s Place. Advocates play a key role in identifying guests who could benefit from mental health and substance use recovery support. They refer guests to our on-site Clinical Social Worker and our Recovery Support Navigator, who meet with our most vulnerable guests in need of mental health support, crisis intervention, resources for ongoing therapy and support groups.

For women who are newly housed or who are at risk of eviction, Advocates in the Stabilization Program provide in-home services and act as liaisons with management/landlords to help women retain their housing. Many of our guests struggle with mental illness, physical disabilities, language and other barriers that can jeopardize their living situations. Stabilization Advocates help women develop individualized service plans, and check in regularly with landlords to identify anything that might threaten a woman’s housing.

Collectively, the Advocates at Rosie’s Place held a total of 14,156 visits with guests this past year. And our Stabilization team helped over 65 guests remain housed and healthy.

At Rosie’s Place, support looks like:

Because of one missed utility payment, Saundra lost her home. Even worse, she and her teenage son, Jourdan, had to be separated. With our support, Saundra found an apartment and reunited with her son. She also secured a job with a nonprofit that helps women reenter the workforce.

After two years of sobriety, Diana relapsed and is now willing to seek the support and guidance of our Recovery Support Navigator. She is hopeful that with our help, she will regain her stability.

Inflation has become a significant barrier for many of our guests whose overall expenses, especially the cost of food, have increased, which has meant that catching up on back rent has become out of reach.

Our Legal Program helps guests overcome obstacles that could prevent them from fair and equitable access to the justice that our legal system can provide. Some of those barriers include access to technology, receiving services in their preferred language and requirements that create feelings of intimidation, fear and confusion. In partnership with Greater Boston Legal Services and Rian Immigrant Center, we offer in-person and remote legal services in the areas of family law, immigration, employment and housing, among others.

The Advocacy, Legal and Housing Stabilization Programs helped to prevent eviction for 1,172 guests this year. This work, helping women avoid homelessness, took place in more than 3,000 visits with our guests—a 72% increase since the start of the pandemic.

Last year, the Legal Program helped 759 guests through in-person visits and the Legal Helpline for a range of issues related to family law, immigration, housing, employment and CORI sealing.

op·por·tu·ni·ty

Offering free on-site and virtual classes, our Women’s Education Center provides hundreds of guests with ESOL, literacy and computer classes to support their education and employment goals. Most of our students are immigrants from around the world.

This year, the Women’s Education Center fully embraced hybrid programming with both on-site and remote options for students.

The Employment Specialist meets with guests to assist in writing resumes and cover letters, undertake online job searches and help with applications, review employment benefits and many other work-related issues. The Specialist helped 168 women in 507 job-related visits over the year and placed 24 women in jobs with 5 additional women in job training programs.

Over the year, 61 students came to a drop-in Computer Lab, 60 took Zoom classes, 49 attended on-site classes, 46 participated in instructional phone calls and 171 joined the Cell-Ed phone program to support their English learning.

6
\ ˌä-pər-ˈtü-nə-tē , -ˈtyü- \ noun
a good position, chance or prospect, as for advancement or success

At Rosie’s Place, opportunity looks like:

Marie, a Haitian immigrant, entered a classroom for the first time to learn a new language in our Women’s Education Center. She practices her English so that she can seek new opportunities and achieve her goal of becoming a CNA. She knows this is a crucial step on her journey.

Chelsea,

Our Public Policy team works to advance legislation that supports our values, that does not discriminate against the poor and that benefits our guest population. The team works through legislative advocacy, coalition building and by empowering guests to be actively involved in civic life. In addition to working on legislative campaigns to improve conditions for our guests, we frequently host candidates and elected officials at Rosie’s Place, giving them and their Rosie’s Place constituents a chance to interact and ask one another questions.

Our program staff lead a monthly Public Policy Council meeting with at least 10 guests to discuss topics related to our policy priorities and strategize how together we can amplify their voices and needs.

7
a single mother of two, worked with our Employment Specialist to secure a new job opportunity after being laid off from her job at a call center. In the interim, she depended on our Food Pantry—every week—for groceries, masks and COVID-19 tests.
At Rosie’s Place, we recognize that the causes of homelessness and poverty are systemic.

Founded by Kip Tiernan in 1974, Rosie’s Place is the first emergency shelter for women in the United States. Our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment to help poor and homeless women to maintain their dignity, seek opportunity and find security in their lives.

and

“Never forget that charity is scraps from the table and justice is a seat at the table. Charity is giving to others what belongs to you. Justice is giving others what belongs to them.”

-Kip Tiernan, Rosie’s Place Founder

At Rosie’s Place, we believe diversity, equity and inclusion are core components of justice. We commit to acting on a daily basis to dismantle injustice to ensure that opportunities and equitable outcomes are available to all members of our community regardless of individual characteristics including race, color, religion, national origin, gender, gender identity, age, sexual orientation or perceived ability.
