Festival is about the music, the experiences, the friendships – and about you.

D THINLSGE O E N

But even though you’d need wings to see it all, there are still those moments during those eight days where we all come together in almost perfect unity. Nights in front of Orange Stage where we all sing along to the same song, hearing a new act and knowing they’ve changed your life, or that feeling in your stomach when you see someone walking by you who you’d do everything to see again, or the common memories we leave with, even though we spent the festival eating at different food stalls, saw different bands and partied in different agoras. That’s what ties us all together: the feeling that Roskilde Festival is something we all share, help create and take part in. Roskilde

As you might know, for eight days the festival becomes the fourth biggest city in Denmark, not to mention the biggest temporary city in the world. Like any other densely populated urban area, Roskilde Festival lives and breathes 24 hours a day, never really sleeping, always moving in new directions, lead on by its citizens. Even though many things at Roskilde Festival will be like last year – the stages, the agoras, the lines to the toilets – a lot will have changed as well. Apollo has its own designated zone, Dream City has moved and improved – and some of the music you’ll hear won’t sound like anything you’ve ever heard before. But change at Roskilde Festival is not just whether your camp or favorite food stand has moved to another location. CHANGE is also the name of our focus on democracy, empowerment, citizenship and how your ideas and will to co-create can help make the world a better place. Come down to Dream City and help change not only you, but the festival and the world surrounding you as well. On the following pages, you can read everything you need to know about this year’s festival. This is where you’ll find information on all the artists to to see and hear, our non-profit work, the art events, Cities and Zones to check out, all the food to eat and how you help yourself and your friends stay safe at the festival. We are happy to welcome you to the city of Roskilde Festival. It never sleeps, and neither can you if you want to see it all.

THIS GUIDE IS SUSTAINABLE

The guide you are holding in your hands is produced with the environment in mind. We use ink and glue that will not pose problems during the recycling process. The printing house also complies with demands on minimising waste and pollutants.

WELCOME

One thing that always surprises us when going home from another Roskilde Festival is how little of it we actually got to experience, despite our best efforts to make this the one festival where we wouldn’t miss out on anything. But even though most of us are here for eight days, there’s absolutely no chance you’ll ever see, hear, taste, try or experience everything the festival has to offer. With 195 music acts, more than150 different food stalls, countless events and happenings, not to mention the countless camps, Roskilde Festival is like a huge all-you-can-eat buffet. Only one thing to do – start at the beginning and just eat your way through it.

I K S O R T A GOODBYE WARM UP — HELLO EIGHT DAYS OF FESTIVAL

This year, when we begin, we begin, and that means no more Warm Up. From day one there’ll be music at Apollo Countdown and Pavilion Junior, art happenings, events and loads of other things for you to do from Saturday to Wednesday. As always, when Thursday comes, all the stages will be open.

APOLLO ZONE — GOODBYE GRAVEL PIT, HELLO MUSIC

Good news for fans of electronic music! This year, the Apollo stage gets its very own area. It’s just south of gate 10 where the gravel pit used to be. The area features electronic music all week, first

DREAM CITY — WHERE EVERYBODY PARTICIPATES

Our focus on dining experiences is stronger than ever. In Hal B you’ll find a unique space dedicated to eating - and eating like you’ve never eaten before. In Hal B, you’ll find brand new food stalls and food concepts, so don’t miss out. Food events and pop-up restaurants can be found by the judges’ box in Gloria Zone and the stables by 7th street. Don’t forget to download APPetizer – our very own Roskilde Festival food app. Bon appetit.

TRASHPOINTS and CLEAN — BUT NOT WITHOUT PARTYING

Just because you prefer to stay in a clean camp, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to party. That’s why we are turning the areas B, E, F, K and M into ‘clean’ areas – without the ‘silent’. Clean and Silent can still be found in area J. As a new feature we are introducing trashpoints, which are spots for depositing trash. Read more about the fight on trash on page 18.

If you know your way around the festival, you’ll notice that Green City, Poor City, Radio City and the ART ZONE — former Dream City have morphed into the all-new COME WITH US TO ANOTHER WORLD Dream City. If you’re in need of medical assistance at Ros kilde Festival, please use the festival’s own firstaid stations. The emergency room at Roskilde Hospital requires you to contact them in advance on (+45) 7015 0708. SAFETY AT ROSKILDE FESTIVAL

The combination of nylon tents and open fire is extremely dangerous, which is why it is important that you do not light a bonfire in your camp – neither during the festival or when you’re leaving. The ban on open fire also includes torches, candles, hurricane lanterns, cooking devices and grills – including disposable grills. At every agora you’ll find a fire ring, a cooking island and a communal grill you can use if you want to grill sausages, make soup or simply heat a meal. Please remember that it is absolutely life threatening to light a gas burner in your tent, likewise it is not allowed to burn your tent, containers or other objects when you leave the festival.

The safety at Roskilde Festival is continually evaluated to remove and reduce risks. We closely follow the national and international development in the safety field, but we still need you to help ensure that you and everybody around you get the best and most safe concert experience possible.

please help us with the following —— Pay attention to – and follow – the safety information presented on the big screens at the stages and the guidelines from the crowd safety staff in the orange vests. —— Pay attention to friends and people around you. —— If you need help, or see others who do, please address the crowd safety staff. —— Make sure to sleep, eat, and drink so that your body is supplied with rest and energy. If you feel unwell, or see someone else who seems to need help, address the festival staff.

HOW TO ENTER THE PIT

move back and to the side if you feel insecure during a concert.

At Orange Stage, there are two entrances to the four sections in front. If you want to go to sections B or D, you have to use the entrance east of the stage. The entrance to sections A and C is west of the stage.

B

C

D

PIT SYSTEMS

The pit systems in front of Orange stage and Arena are safety constructions that make the concert experience safe for those of you who would like to be right in front of the stage. Show up early at the concerts since there is limited amount of space in the pit systems and many who would like to get in there. The pit system entrances are located at both sides of the Orange stage and in the east side of Arena. The green and red lights at the entrance tell you if there is free space available or if it’s full. You can’t stay in the pit between concerts since they have to be cleared and cleaned.

PROTECT YOUR EARS

You won’t get much out of Roskilde Festival if you can’t hear anything. If you experience a ringing or a buzzing in your ears, you have to be careful – it’s a serious danger signal. Therefore – buy a set of earplugs. They can be found in all kiosks, drink stalls, and merchandise stalls and cost 10 kr.

remember! Staying in the pit systems during concerts can be a very intense and physical experience. We ask that you only stay in there if you feel completely safe at all times.

DO NOT

—— Crowd surf. Crowd surfing is very dangerous. Nobody likes your shoe in their face, and you might fall down or be trampled at worst. Crowd surfing is strictly forbidden at all stages and can cause immediate expulsion from the festival. —— Form human chains. You put others in risk by creating unrest in the crowd. —— Run or push to get in front. You create waves in the audience and increase the risk of someone falling or getting crushed. —— Sit on the shoulders of somebody. You risk getting hurt, and it ruins the concert experience for others.

sations working with the same goals – community spirit and open innovation. They all encourage young people to take part in creating a more sustainable and responsible society. They do this with things such as creative laboratories and urban development events where citizens are invited to take matters into their own hands when it comes to developing their city. The organizations are, among others, 100påendag, FabLab, Labitat and INSP!, and you can meet them all at Dream City Makerspace, where you yourself also can contribute to creating a better festival city.

AFRICAN YOUTH PANEL

African Youth Panel is a pan-african youth panel working across the African continent to give the youth of Africa a voice, both in African and international democratic processes. African Youth Panel has members from all African countries and participates in everything from climate and poverty summit meetings to national political events in order to push towards the goal to get more transparent political processes that involve young citizens. This is not a matter of course in many African countries. Eight young members of the steering committee of African Youth Panel will visit the festival this year.

Roskilde Festival is an approved fundraising organisation, which means we are able to raise funds for charity. This year we are collecting money for projects in third world countries using open source technology, thereby transferring power to the user – or citizen. HALF OF THE WORLD’S POOR HAS DISAPPEARED Since 1990, 700 million people have been lifted out of poverty. This is an important progress that shows that the fight against poverty is working. In 2000, the world’s countries promised each other that they would halve the proportion of extremely poor people. Today, that goal has been reached, mainly thanks to improved access to education, health care, new technology, and increased trade. But no one should live in poverty, so the fight goes on.

We can end poverty

Roskilde Festival has always had opinions and views and in ‘73 they were more left wing than most. In 1993, Roskilde Festival wasn’t just about grunge rock. The new world music stage showcased artists from Mexico, Japan and Bosnia, among others, while Velvet Underground gave a rather forgettable reunion concert on Orange Stage – at least according to several reviews. Meanwhile especially the girls went crazy for the newly minted winners of the Danish rock music championship, Dizzy Mizz Lizzy, who played on Blue Stage.

Soon you’ll have 195 very different acts at your very fingertips. Some are at the peak of their career, others are well on their way up there. However, that’s not all. With Apollo Countdown and Pavilion Junior, our main focus lies on giving you the most exciting and fresh new Nordic sounds. But whether you prefer well-established idols, or those still on their path to fame (and perhaps even fortune), Roskilde Festival has something for you. We just hope you’ll take the time to fall in love with all those acts, you didn’t think you’d fall in love with. All artists featured in the following pages have one thing in common: We believe that we have caught them at the crucial – and in some cases, even the finest – time in their career. In other words, 2013 is exactly the right year for them to play Roskilde Festival. From the silver-lined headliners to the amazingly large batch of extremely young artists: Roskilde Festival is about presenting the right acts at the very right time – no matter what kind of music they play or how long they’ve been doing it. Take your time to read about the bands you have already planned to see at this year’s festival, all while hopefully coming across acts that will tempt your musical curiosity. Anyone with just the tiniest shred of interest in music should be able to seek out some new and old favourites in our line up, regardless of whether this is your first year at Roskilde Festival, or your right arm has old Roskilde Festival wristbands up to your elbow. Enjoy. The Roskilde Festival Booking Committee

CAPTAIN FUFANU / IS

LO L O AP P

BINÄRPILOT/ NO

It’s Game Over to uninspired dance music. Binärpilot has moved to the next level already. Web designer Alexander Støvers dedicates his jams to “robots, geeks, hackers, and nerds of this world,” and the Norwegian’s home-produced tunes sound like a steroid-pumped soundtrack to old, flashing computer games featuring pixelated plumbers saving the world.

Two DJs have made quite an impact on the nightlife of Reykjavik. Captain Fufanu is two young lads playing minimal, deep techno. The duo is working on their debut album right now. If their first tracks are anything to go by, they know about beats for the clubbers as well as colder, more atmospheric electronica.

CARLI / SE

He has crafted beats for Robyn who considers him a worthy exponent for tomorrow’s electronic music scene. Carli Løf is an overwhelmingly talented DJ and producer. The eclectic Swede has built up a CV bulging with transatlantic impact and VIP collaborators. With a multicoloured clash of bass, rave and hip hop, Carli has been hailed as one of the major shooting stars of 2013.

COMPADRE / SE

The nightclubs go Middle Eastern when Compadre set fire to the beat and start a musical and absolutely un-bloody Jihad against the charts. With more than enough attitude to go around, the trio’s grooves have spread across their native Sweden. Their early songs are a bass-heavy, neon yellow mixture of hip hop, Persian folk music and gritty pop that would make M.I.A. blush with pride. BWOY DE BHAJAN

BWOY DE BHAJAN / DK

A summery feeling pervades Bwoy De Bhajan’s warm flows of challenging tunes. The promising producer has a penchant for India, and throughout his music the longing for the burning of sun and curry can be felt alongside experimental western electronica influences. Despite the predominantly lazy groove there is also plenty of doodlings, angular beats, broken bass lines and eastern mysticism to lose yourself in.

FELIX DE LUCA / DK

MC Felix De Luca already made some noise with his ep The Rebirth Of An Artist, an opus one about “weed, women, sneakers and Danish design.” He has previously demonstrated his talent and decidedly non-Danish-sounding flow under the moniker Verb Ink. Felix De Luca thrives in the slipstream of sharp, Danish hip hop making noise in the underground right now.

GHOST VENUE — PHOTO: TOM SPR AY

GHOST VENUE / DK

Electro sounds of today and tomorrow join soul and funk sounds of the past in Ghost Venue’s musical crystal ball. Theodor Storm Kristensen specialises in hazy nostalgia smacking slightly of jazz and lazy hip hop – at other times the bass grooves go full-on futuristic and hard-hitting. In the live setting a drummer adds extra energy to the haunting sounds. ELLIPHANT — PHOTO: FREDRIK ETOALL

FRIENDLY BEASTLY COYOTE / DK

The wolves have returned to the Danish peninsula of Jutland (true story). Friendly Beastly Coyote joins loudly in the yowling of the Jutland wolves from his home in faraway Nykøbing Mors, and the urban audience in Copenhagen better take notice. At Roskilde Festival 2013 Friendly Beastly Coyote is sure to inspire a rave that will have the wolves howling further in unison.

KADIE ELDER / DK

Anders Rask, frontman and singer of Kadie Elder, has a background in folk music, but Kadie Elder finds the young Dane bursting with electricity and power. This becomes clear on the band’s first single “Widen Rift” which introduces electronic pop brimming with lush production and ingenious detail. This is your chance to join Kadie Elder from their very beginning.

BAND PRESENTATIONS | APOLLO COUNTDOWN

Norwegian act Eik specialises in 80s-tinted nostalgia and colour-saturated soundscapes full of disco and synth pop. With impressive ease the duo, which turns into a quartet on stage, creates dreamy electronica full of gentle synths and wonderful minor tones. Eik is a must-see for both electronica geeks and pop lovers who have worn out their copy of Best of the 80s.

His drowsy electronica is surrounded by distorted voices with edgy rhythms underneath. Rewolmer is music for both daydreaming and introspective dancing and is crackling, synthetic beauty the way it can only be produced in the laboratory of electronic music.

37

ROBEAT BOYS / DK

How trashy and whacked-out can you play electronic rock? Using German favourites like Kraftwerk and Neu! as starting points, K-X-P take the formula even further. The band has given the punk intensity a nudge upwards, but still the German-sounding mechanics rummages persistently underneath the bulldozer beats of the Finns. Their live shows are journeys into a black maelstrom where the music’s malignant and industrial gravity emerges clearly from the whirlpool.

LEMÂITRE / NO

Maybe Oslo is actually the Paris of the North? Ulrik Denizou Lund and Ketil Jansen founded Lemâitre in 2010. Judging from their electro-acoustic instrumentation and warm disco feeling, they aim to become the Norwegian equivalent to French acts such as Justice, Phoenix and Daft Punk.

NONSENS / DK

DJ and producer trio Nonsens has put the sunny Danish island of Bornholm on the neon-blinking map. The guys get the party and your adrenalin going with a poisonous green mix of rave, electro, hip hop and trap. With bad-ass beats, freaky remixes, and pitched brash synths, Nonsens have true sound anarchy and pure party vibes on the agenda.

REWOLMER / DK

Jeppe Lauritzen places his sound somewhere between atmospheric ambient and clubbier genres.

SEKUOIA / DK

Sekuoia’s cracking and lingering electronica has already seen him signed with acclaimed Berlin label Project: Mooncircle. Sekuoia combines organic with electronic in a dreamy meltdown. Dry beats, washes of synth and copy/pasted vocals conjure up echoes of both dubstep and atmospheric ambient.

SUMMER HEART / SE

The beach, the sun, the waves. The music of David Alexander has a thing for summer. Most of his songs are full of that sunlight people in Scandinavia only get to enjoy a few months each year. This gives the music its own shimmering, mournful beauty as synths, guitars and effectdrowned vocals weave a tapestry of drowsy summer memories, imaginary or real.

TORKELSEN / NO

Röyksopp meets Boards of Canada in the soundworld of Norwegian producer Torkelsen. With elements of glitch, instrumental hip hop and frostbitten soundscapes, the young beatsmith has developed a Scandinavian electronica sound more shimmering than the ice caps. On other releases, like Torsnes Beats vol. 2, the beats have more energy, “dirt and lo-fi elements”, according to Torkelsen himself.

With an arsenal of synths, vocoders and bulging bass lines, Robeat Boys have made the night clubs of Copenhagen drip with sweat, and now it’s Roskilde’s turn. Standing still is out of the question while this droid duo serves up its sexy beats and infectious vocal melodies.

AJUNA / DK

For years Ajuna have been hatching and brooding in the cellar depths. In 2013 exciting things are happening for the quintet. The Copenhagen band plays crushingly chaotic metal with a Nordic touch, finding room for both depressive beauty and marrow-shattering aggression. Black metal and technical hardcore are just some of the genres Ajuna use in their attempt to set your ears and nervous system on fire.

songs manage to be a charming mix of rattling and reckless, yet tuneful, harmonies delivered with a 2 finger salute-attitude.

BENDIK/ NO

“Blåsar Vekk” (blowing away), Bendik calls one of their tunes. And the title actually fits this band’s alternative pop. Bendik are keen on combining the grandiose with icy harmonies, inducing the sensation of a chilly Northern wind. At the same time, Bendik differ from their Scandinavian contemporaries, applying a more electronic touch. Silje Hastensen’s powerful vocals are mostly surrounded by windswept, frostbitten synths.

BABY IN VAIN/ DK

They aren’t old enough to remember the 90s, yet they still manage to take you back to a point in time and space that feels a lot like smoky backstreet bars in Seattle way back then. Baby in Vain have found their inspiration in dragging stoner-rock and grunge, and Benedicte, Lola and Andrea’s

BROKE/ DK

Mads Bergland and Simon Littauer picked the name Broke as they were at rock bottom financially and education-wise. As a picture, even, of their whole crisis-torn generation. Determined to challenge mainstream Denmark, the duo has replaced school books with apocalyptic, battered dance music. The electronic beats are brewed

from krautrock, disco and post punk in a steaming acid bath full of unhealthy fumes.

ICE CREAM CATHEDRAL/ DK

39

With a great ear for golden melodies, Ice Cream Cathedral move self-assuredly in the air-thin part of the atmosphere. On their first album The Drowsy Kingdom the Copenhagen trio has found their own niche between synthesizers, nostalgic retro pop and warm streams of new age, drawing an independent line like the vapour trail from an aeroplane on a clear blue sky.

40

With a heart laden with melancholy memories of summer Postiljonen aim at yours. The Swe dish/Norwegian trio deal with azure dream pop – the air thick with evaporated water from the Mediterranean and dreams of love as fragile as soap bubbles. Postiljonen skilfully tickle the eternally nostalgic summer-centre of our hearts using soothing synthesizers, 80s-like productions and vocals wrapped in effects and fog.

MØ/ DK

The international music world is picking up on how to write Danish letter Ø. This is largely due to MØ, Denmark’s most sparkling meteor of 2013. Despite the virginal artist name (‘mø’ is an Old Norse word for a woman unwed), Karen Marie Ørsted is no fragile violet. Her glamorous pop songs have an urban, gritty attitude, and MØ is able to use her lush voice for rapping as well as singing.

NAVNELØS/ DK

Playing ambitious chamber rock, Navneløs (Da nish for nameless) visit classical music, post rock and jazz without ever quite settling down. At one point the music is minimalistic. Suddenly pom pous. Soon, often breathtakingly beautiful. With cello, piano, steel brass, noisy guitars and the strong vocals of Lin Rosenbeck, Navneløs beautifully evade the tyranny of categories.

OVERTHROW/ NO

Attention has grown around Overthrow, especially after the debut album Adjust to Darkness saw the light of day. Their sonic punch-in-the-stomach has triggered positive comparisons to Converge, Cancer Bats and, of course, the other darkened fellow Norwegian townsmen in Kvelertak. With an aggressive mix of metal, hardcore punk and genuine rock’n’roll, Overthrow makes your blood boil.

PÄ Ä KII — PHOTO: SANTTU SÄRKÄS

PÄÄ KII/ FI

They sing in their strange mother tongue. Still, Pää Kii are living the punk philosophy better than many of their English peers. Pää Kii – Finnish for “shut up” – is straightforward punk in the vein of the genre’s 70s heyday. Devoid of detours of any kind. The rocking and rolling punk songs make you want to wear a Ramones leather jacket and take Finnish 101.

KRISTINA RENÉE/ DK

Using piano, acoustic guitar and some electronics as stepping-stones, Kristina Renée has taken the first steps towards creating a name for herself among lovers of pop music with an element of Nordic soul. She is a singer/songwriter of the melancholy kind. The songs from her first release are melodious, thoughtful and celestial. Still, she points out in an interview that her coming full-length debut may point in another direction entirely.

SCHULTZ & FOREVER/ DK

Jonathan Schultz and his acoustic guitar create a vibrant presence in his home recordings using sparkling finger play and gritty, existential nerve. The 18-year-old kid steps on stage with a complete band making his folk-inspired song rise towards the canvas dome above. His music is reminiscent of a young Bob Dylan despite Jonathan Schultz’ claims of being inspired by R. Kelly.

With ever-moving foothold in both alternative rock and global sounds, Travelling Tribes have made their way into a Copenhagen psychedelica scene unafraid to make the musical paint box merge together. Tribal percussion, foreign melodies on the cello, synthesizers and impressionistic guitars are along for the ride when this bold collective cross the continents and head for remote villages.

With long, atmospheric numbers, Solbrud create a world of fabled, mythological darkness you don’t ever want to leave again. Lead singer Ole Luk’s guttural screaming vocals leave no doubt that this is primitive black metal attacking with the characteristic, choking density. At the same time, there is also a core of melodic beauty in the middle of the mud storm of guitar, bass and drums.

THEN COMES SILENCE/ SE

Based in a dogma of total anonymity this Swe dish band play their gothic noise rock cloaked in shadows. The self-titled debut album was fittingly released in the autumn, on which the black silhouettes display their control of grinding guitars, booming bass and world-weariness. It is loud; it is noisy, like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in Halloween-masks. It is evidence of the amount of psychedelic nuances found in the colour black.

With inspiration from 80s no wave, post punk and dark industrial, Vanligt Folk have already won several Swedish black hearts. DAF, Nitzer Ebb and Einstürzende Neubauten are just a few of the benchmarks that have clearly been set on the trio’s self-titled EP. Icy synths and ominous cold war atmosphere played and sung with insisting endurance.

THE WOKEN TREES/ DK

The Woken Trees’ post punk update sounds like Joy Division heading for some occult mass at midnight: the bleakness of Manchester replaced with the claustrophobia of the deep forest. Moodily, they dwell on their evil bass lines, insisting rhythms and jarring guitars. Take a trip into The Woken Trees’ black labyrinth. Even on the brightest of Roskilde summer days, the sun will have a hard time finding its way.

Age Coin is a duo of members from Copenhagen’s punk underground, and according to themselves their music describes what it’s like “when you’re feeling really low in a corner of the club.” With foggy, industrial soundscapes, they create bleak scenarios where the dim techno rhythm is hovering like an abstract threat of annihilation. A massive darkness built from steel and shabby electronics.

The Aussie-rockers Airbourne hold the balls of rock music in as firm a grip as their countrymen AC/DC. As always the stage is the only place to experience these guys sing about Jack D, wicked blondes and amber ales. Airbourne plays rock with riffs like bolts of lightning and grinding guitar solos. Look forward to meeting these guys with hops and motor oil in their blood.

MEHER & SHER ALI/ PK

The 700-year-old music genre Qawwali is best described as Islamic gospel. Meher & Sher Ali belong at the top end of the genre. Departing from the Sufi-tradition, in which music is a tool to approach the divine, the two Pakistanis sing and play their way towards the diverse heart of Allah. The Tabla drum and the harmonium along with the chanting vocals make up some of the characteristics of the music.

ANAAL NATHRAKH/ UK

With elements of black metal, melodious death metal and grindcore, Anaal Nathrakh blur the edges for where punishment ends and relief begins. When Mick Kenney and David Hunt perform, they are usually backed by guest performers on stage to match the attack of guitar and guttural growling on their albums. Anaal Nathrakh will devour your nerve endings like a drugged up fighting dog.

The 60s and 70s was a very special period in Ethiopian music. In the new millennium music collectors have discovered this musical treasure of golden funk, jazz, afrobeat and soul. Clearly Badume’s Band is in love with these glory days. Led by the Ethiopian singer Selamnesh Zemene, Badume’s Band recreates the Addis Ababa of 1970. Together they embody not just a past but also a future of Ethiopian urban music.

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE/ US

The residents of Animal Collective have pushed pop music into a whole new dimension on a number of deeply curious albums, latest on Centipede Hz from 2012. The Americans’ music – inspired by avantgarde and minimalist art music – sounds like a pack of children high on sugar let loose behind synthesizers, microphones and drums. A Hindu and a Muslim, Chirag Patel and Magdi Ytreeide, two very untraditional Norwegians have really seized the day. The two guys play festive pop and straight-forward hip hop with Nordic phrases and sympathetic views combined with large amounts of humour. The duo has produced a long line of hit singles. Even on stage these two guys are already a kind of veterans despite the fact that they are only around 30 years old.

With Kenton Slash Demon, Jonas Kenton and Silas Moldenhawer live out their penchant for especially house, techno and pitch-black disco. This DJ set will bring you club music meant for dancing but the sounds are often also as inscrutable and deep as a night sky full of stars. Kenton Slash Demon have been well on their way for a long time, and the duo is finding an audience both on the wormholes of the internet as well as the dance floor.

MARIE KEY/ DK

With her tongue in her cheek and a dose of genuine poetry, Marie Key has established herself as one of the most original songwriters and lyricists in Denmark. Her first albums had a predominantly acoustic expression. On the last two albums however, she has developed a more electronic sound that has catapulted the curly head towards the pink universe of pop and radio.

KID KOALA/ CA

He is a jester wearing several caps: Away from his turntables Kid Koala moonlights as a graphic novelist and designer. Ask any music nerd, though, and his trademark will forever be his virtuoso skills on the record players. On his latest record 12 Bit Blues Kid Koala puts blues music under the needle and he will take the sounds from this album to his extravagant Vinyl Vaudeville 2.0 show with costumes, dancers and robots.

KILLER MIKE/ US

R.A.P. Music, the title of Killer Mike’s most recent and best album is, tellingly enough, short for ’Rebellious African People’s Music’. Working with Brooklyn magus El-P, Killer Mike has sharpened his attack and made a meteor-like hip hop record. His politically charged hip hop universe is shivering with tongue-sharp rap, sparkling attitude and futuristic beats. It’s dirty southern hip hop with a touch of alternative New York. Killer Mike’s status as inspired protest hip hopper in the tradition of Public Enemy has never been as strong as right now.

Straightforward rock’n’roll is Kyle Thomas’ true calling and love despite duties in a series of very different bands. This productive slacker writes laidback garage rock tunes that shine like a Cadillac; these songs will make you forget about ever feeling older than 17. All the tunes are written, sung and served with an attitude that incarnates the 60s and 70s melodic golden age of rock.

KRAFTWERK/ DE

It is practically impossible to imagine electronic music without Kraftwerk. The seminal band has been the source of inspiration for a wide range of musical genres such as electro, synthpop and techno. Kraftwerk return to Roskilde Festival with their extraordinary 3D show. Roskilde Festival will hand out glasses to the audience, thus ensuring a visual space age feeling worthy of the futureminded computer sounds.

Thrash metal acts as a source of eternal youth for several of the genre’s classic bands. Just look at Kreator, German metal kings who after more than 30 years into their career still bring the stage to boiling point. Since the early 80s, the Germans have been churning out albums that have incorporated their sound into the genre’s DNA. The last one is the Phantom Antichrist from 2012, showing a self-assured band in great shape.

KRIS KRISTOFFERSON/ US

This silver-haired multi-artist has an impressive back catalogue that includes some of country music’s best known songs, and an influence on other musicians that places him among the titans of American music. Armed with nothing but a guitar, harmonica and plenty of personal grit, Kris Kristofferson plays authentic country with a taste of bourbon, Nashville and stories about his own life’s ups and downs.

The undisputed metal giants have not played Roskilde Festival since 2003. This year Metallica take over the Orange Stage with some of rock’s most durable riffs and songs. James, Lars, Kirk and Robert take a break from the recording of their next album to play Roskilde Festival – their only European concert this summer! At the same time, a series of hits have made them idols to an extent unheard of among most of their riff-loving peers.

He may be the hottest new Icelandic act right now, but Ásgeir Trausti’s songs are also well on their way to reach the world outside the volcanic island. The classically trained talent’s music is based on naked, beautiful songs, written and played on his acoustic guitar and spiced up with electronic features. The band version of the concerts includes musicians who normally play in his older brother’s reggae band Hjálmar.

They call themselves the heaviest duo on Earth. Using only bass, drums and some keyboards Talbot breaks down the gates to the underworld allowing a maelstrom of black matter to engulf you, the innocent and curious music lover. There are no guitars to be found anywhere. The two Estonians set new standards for the genre of doom metal making it more remorseless and steaming cold than even the Baltic Sea.

TREMORO TARANTURA/ NO

Tremoro Tarantura play their music “on location” and never enter a studio. As a consequence they are led on their journey into the storm of noise and avant-garde rock music by any impressions or ideas that may come to them. We can expect a cacophony of sound. According to one source the Norwegians find their inspiration from acts such as AC/DC, the harsh composer Penderecki and the velvety Frenchman Serge Gainsbourg.

TRULS/ NO

Truls Heggero has changed lanes and decided to give urban, glittery pop music a try. The celebrated songwriter, vocalist and composer won the appraisal of the audience working with Lukestar. Back then, the Norwegian falsetto towered above guitar-laden power pop with a Nordic feel. As of now the guitar strings are less prominent and replaced by booty shaking electronic pop and soul.

TYRANNY/ FI

Funeral doom is an extreme metal subgenre, in which everything sounds like it is played in slow motion. The music marches like a funeral procession towards annihilation. The Finnish duo Tyranny is one of the strongest line-ups in the genre. Their extremely prolonged mini-symphonies depict the human race from the icy cold perspective of eternity. Tyranny’s vocals are dragged from the blackest reaches of cosmos, the guitar riffs and minor keyed keyboards drags the music to the limit of imagination without stalling the dark march completely.

will send it back where it belongs: into the arms of the Devil himself.

The denim demons of Turbonegro are back at Ros kilde for the first time since 2005. A new lead singer has joined the band and the barks of Tony Sylvester have given the Norwegians a fresh shot of punk in the jugular. Rarely has garage rock with devil’s horns and a permanent hard-on been played better than by this pack of crazed dogs. With whiplash guitar solos and flavours of booze and kinky sex Turbonegro are set to save rock music and they

With a mixture of darkly psychedelic hard rock and heavy metal, Uncle Acid & the deadbeats have gathered what is practically a small cult around their name. There is a hefty groove behind the zip of the leather trousers and the boys from Cambridge seem inspired by gory horror flicks, Charles Manson and their old Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath vinyls. Uncle Acid & the deadbeats will be a revelation for everybody with a penchant for memorable melodies and nostalgic fuzz guitars.

UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA/ NZ/US

The poppy acid rock songs of Ruban Nielson made the world want a piece of him, before his

sugar cubes were even ready for consumption. This year’s follow-up album II has just arrived. Despite darker lyrics, it carries on with musical sunshine, laid-back nonchalance and heart-warming melodies. Unknown Mortal Orchestra gazes reverently at late The Beatles and early Pink Floyd, and the acid trip also has a vibe reminiscent of a young Beck.

VATICAN SHADOW/ US

Dominick Fernow (aka Prurient) focuses on the war on terror with his Vatican Shadow project. With electronic loops he takes us into a world of Islamic uprising, military build-up and blooddripping partisan warfare. The American’s disturbing electro is dark, dystopian and industrial – yet, the whole universe is recognisable from the news channels’ relentless broadcast.

Like Batman or Banksy, Z lives in the shadows and makes the imagination work overtime. The mysterious individual paved the way for perhaps the first musical genre born exclusively on the Internet: Trap is a wild mix of digital bass, dubstep and house. The cartoon-like music has been raised in the schizophrenic greenhouses of YouTube and Soundcloud.

MARCOS VALLE feat. LUCAS SANTTANA/ BR

Since 1963, Marcos Valle has been a pioneer of Brazilian music. He combines Western pop music, soul and jazz with bossa nova and other genres bursting with vitamin D. With his gentle, conversing voice he makes the snug music glow with wellbeing and ease. Underneath, however, there is also a political bite. The cosy music with its breezy flutes, groovy guitars, Hammond organ and jazzy electric piano reveals its claws through the lyrics.

VINNIE WHO

VINNIE WHO/ DK

You have to be made of stone to not want a pair of golden shoes, a suit and plenty of hair gel when Vinnie Who takes the stage with copious amounts of synth and soprano vocals. Niels Bagge keeps drawing fresh souls towards the twinkling light of the mirror ball, where good melodies and delicate movements of the hip just keep going. An uncompromising will to make intelligent disco has earned Vinnie Who the title of funky pop prince of Denmark.

BLOOD LUST AMONG VINYL HUNTERS

THE ABCs OF DEATH

Here are 26 short horror movies, one for each of the letters in the alphabet, directed by 26 of the most talented, experimental and boundary-pushing genre directors at the moment. They were all instructed to stick to just two dogmas: stay on budget and stay within the law. Other than that everything is possible. The result is everything from beautiful experimental film to horrific gore, and all conceivable combinations of taste and total lack thereof. PHO

THE ACT OF KILLING

THE ACT OF KILLING

When the military seized power in Indonesia in the 1960s the mass murderers won and a million people were killed. Forty years later the killers stage their own deeds in technicolor film fantasies.

A documentary tour de force on a three-masted schooner full of artists, scientists and ambitions that reach to the sky, which sets sail for the end of the world on an epic and very entertaining journey full of surprises. The encounter with far-off parts of our world confronts us with great existential mysteries.

Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle Brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty.

THE IMPOSTER

This is the deeply shocking but true story about the doppelganger Frédéric Bourdin, which is unfolded with masterly skill in this sensational docu-thriller. A Texan family of a missing boy took in a man in 1994 that they wished to believe was their son. But who was he really? And how much did the family know?

MUSIC + VIDEO

KIDD LIFE

The small village of Denmark is awash with great music videos. Aspiring directors from across the count ry have submitted their contributions and from them we have compiled a programme of this year’s most interesting Danish music videos. The result is lots of new music and acute visual narratives that dare to stir things up.

LEVIATHAN

This story about the notorious Nordvest neighbourhood of Copenhagen is a hard-boiled gangster drama. The 18-year-old delinquent Casper, played brilliantly by Gustav Dyekjær Giese, bumps into the biker and pimp Bjørn and through him sees an opportunity to rise through the ranks. But no one can run from their past in Nordvest.

Kidd went from total anonymity to rapper of nationwide fame overnight. Kidd Life follows this journey from day 1, where “Kysset med Jamel” only had 9 hits on YouTube, through several ups and downs, and until today where a hardened Kidd is struggling with the hangover that has come with a year and a half of drinking and partying.

The midnight movie from hell. Leviathan nothing less than raises the bar for what film as a medium can do. It was filmed during a night-time sail on an American fishing boat, and is brutal as a heavy metal concert, grotesque as all the biblical plagues rolled into one, and almost comical in its physical intensity. You have been warned!

In the wake of her father’s death, the young heiress India follows the trail of her charming uncle and his murderous tendencies. During the early days of the festival, vinyl-digging DJ collective Radio Martiko from Ghent and Amsterdam will be let loose on the site to pop up. The guys blend a brew of soul, jazz, rhythm ‘n’ blues, rock ‘n’ roll, 60s beat, oriental and tropical music.

The single greatest source of CO2-emission in the world is the way we produce, transport and cook food. Roskilde Festival takes a stand regarding this. In 2013 you can encounter the following initiatives and more regarding food and sustainability at Roskilde Festival.

105

LOTS OF ORGANIC FOOD AT THE STALLS

The food stalls at Roskilde Festival are obliged to be mindful of the environment. This means that impose upon our stalls that many of their ingredients must be organic. This means all dairy products, coffee, tea, juice, wine, iceberg lettuce, cucumbers, onions, tinned tomatoes, herbs and spices, pasta and rice. Also, all stalls must offer at least one vegetarian dish.

WE REDUCE FOOD WASTE

After the festival food stalls can deliver surplus food and ingredients to a catering kitchen in Roskilde. These are then transformed to ready-made meals, which are frozen and delivered to shelters and drop-in centres in the months following the festival. In 2012 we transformed 1.3 tons of surplus food into 3,308 ready-made meals

ORGANIC FOOD BACKSTAGE

We also wish to give our artists a great food experience to remember us by. Therefore we serve them a menu based on seasonal Nordic ingredients of which 70% are organic.

SUSTAINABLE FOOD

GRE GRE AT AND ENE G R

Roskilde Festival is the first Danish festival to use the brand new national symbol for organic food. A gold, silver or bronze organic symbol at a stall means that the stall uses more than 90%, 60-90% or 30-60% organic ingredients, respectively. More than 60% of the ingredients are organic in the new Roskilde Food Court in Hal B in Gloria Zone. For many stalls the figure is even higher and you will find many local and seasonal dishes.
